Welcome to HUU Student Conference 2013! Welcome to Hull University Union’s Annual Student Conference. This year’s theme is Educated, Empowered, Employed; What Next for the Hull Graduate? With high graduate unemployment currently in the UK, how is a Hull graduate different? This conference will debate the attributes of a Hull Graduate. The conference will help you understand the opportunities that are available to you and the valuable skills of those who are successful. With speakers from various disciplines, the conference will help you see the value of your degree, your skills and your experiences. Our panel have experience in a variety of sectors of the working world and are fantastic people to learn from and glean an insight into what awaits you after leaving the University of Hull.
Conference Chair This year’s Student Conference is chaired by Victoria Winterton. Victoria is in her first term as Vice-President Education for Hull University Union and is a graduate of the University of Hull. Victoria’s role as Vice President Education is to represent the collective voice of students on all issues relating to Learning and Teaching. As a University of Hull student, Victoria was the Chair of the Sports Zone and the Chair of the Education Zone. She had voting membership on Union Council, with the specific role as a Councillor of Scrutiny. She was also part of the Societies Executive Committee in the role of Secretary. @HUUEducation

Biographies of the Guest Speakers Professor Calie Pistorius, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Hull Professor Calie Pistorius is the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Hull, a post he has held since September 2009. He is also a director of Yorkshire Universities, The Deep, a Yorkshire Patron, an ex-officio member of the Local Enterprise Partnership for the Humber and serves on the CBI Regional Council for Yorkshire and the Humber. Formerly he was the Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of Pretoria in South Africa (August 2001 - August 2009), where he also served as Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment and Information Technology, Head of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Director of the Institute of Technological Innovation and Director of Information Technology. He was a member of the National Advisory Council on Innovation (NACI) in South Africa (1998 – 2009) and served as its Chair from 2004 until 2008. He holds Bachelors and Honours Degrees in Electronic Engineering from the University of Pretoria (1979, 1981) (both cum laude), Masters and PhD degrees in Electrical Engineering from The Ohio State University (1984, 1986) and a Masters Degree in the Management of Technology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1994). He is also an alumnus of the Harvard Business School, having completed the Advanced Management Program in 2003. His research interests include the management of innovation, management of technology and national innovation policy. He has published widely in these areas as well as in the field of electromagnetic scattering. @UniOfHull
Rachel Wenstone - NUS Vice-President Higher Education Rachel is the NUS Vice-President Higher Education, having previously been the Communications and Internal Affairs Officer at Leeds University Union. She is keen for the movement to recognise the importance of student experiences and not simply the ‘student experience’. While at Leeds University Union, she worked closely with Leeds Metropolitan University, to ensure that 750 students and staff, including those in FE colleges, were able to travel to the London November 10th Demo. Rachel has been on the NUS National Executive Committee and the NUS Women’s Campaign Committee. @Rachel_Wenstone

Pippa Eveleigh, Vice-President Community Hull University Union Pippa Eveleigh is the Vice President Community of Hull University Union. She is a University of Hull graduate with an honours degree in Drama and Theatre Practice. In her role she works closely with the Societies Executive, International Students Association and Hull University Social Services Organisation, Media Committees and Raising And Giving Committee, as well as community volunteering and engagement strategy. A previous committee member, a part of the University Women’s Lacrosse Team and previously the Chair of RAG, Pippa has contributed to the volunteering culture of the University of Hull in a significant way. Whilst studying at the University of Hull, Pippa was also manager of ‘Z-Theatre Company’ where she took 70 first year Hull Drama students to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival where five shows were performed. Pippa has been an active member of HUU as she was the Chair of Community Zone, a Councillor of Scrutiny and a Course Representative. @HUUCommunity
Professor Glenn Burgess, Pro - Vice - Chancellor for Learning and Teaching at the University of Hull Professor Burgess was born in New Zealand and educated there (Victoria University of Wellington), as well as at the University of Cambridge, where he completed a PhD in 1988. He returned to New Zealand to teach at the University of Canterbury, Christchurch from 1988 to 1994, when he joined the History Department at Hull. Glenn was awarded a Personal Chair in 1998. He served as Head of Department of History from 2003 to 2009 and has also served as Deputy Dean for Research in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. He has been a member of Senate since 2001. His research interests lie in the history of Tudor and Stuart England, the history of political thought, and philosophy and theory of history. Professor Burgess is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. @UniOfHull

Judith Donovan, CBE, Hull University Union Trustee Judith Donovan CBE founded her own marketing agency in 1982 after nine years as a graduate employee in marketing in both London and Yorkshire. Judith is a highly experienced non executive director with over 20 years’ experience in both the public and private sector. Sectoral experience includes: training, regeneration, small firms, lottery, agriculture, post, tourism, the Olympics and the Arts. Her skills include: marketing, change management, IT, finance, start-up, merger, downsizing and closure. She has worked across the UK and is one of Yorkshire’s early female entrepreneurs. Current public appointments include: The British Wool Marketing Board, Network Rail, Royal Mail Strategic Mailing Partnership, Legacy Trust UK, Ripon Cathedral, Greater Ripon Improvement Partnership and Hull University Alumni Advisory Board. Judith’s career began as marketing trainee at the Ford Motor Company, followed by an account handling role at JWT and Interpublic. She was then recruited by Grattan as Advertising Manager. In 1982 she started her own direct marketing consultancy, which she subsequently sold in 2000 with a £12.5 million turnover. Her many awards and recognitions include: Female Executive of the Year, Yorkshire Business Woman of the Year (twice), DMA Lifetime Achievement Award (Direct Marketing), UK Direct Lifetime Achiever Award (Direct Marketing), IOSH Lifetime Achievement Award (Health & Safety) and Freeman City of London.
Lord Christopher Haskins, Chair of the Humber Local Enterprise Partnership and Member of University Court Raised to the peerage as Baron Haskins, of Skidby in the County of the East Riding of Yorkshire 1998, Lord Haskins is a former chairman of Northern Foods and Express Dairies and Chairman of the Humber Local Enterprise Partnership. He is currently a member of the Lords’ Cabinet Office Equality and Reform Group Board; Pro-Chancellor of the Open University and a non-executive Director of JSR Farms Ltd. As a former Board member of Yorkshire Forward Regional Development Agency (1998-2008), he brings a wealth of experience in regional development and regeneration. As well as chairing the LEP’s board meetings and representing the LEP in public, Lord Haskins also leads meetings with Ministers and he is the LEP’s voice in Whitehall and Parliament. Lord Haskins is currently a member of the University Court at the University of Hull.
