Easy Ways to

Update Your Kitchen

The kitchen is most often the heart of the home, but it can also be one of the most expensive updates to a new abode. Large tasks such as relocating plumbing lines, knocking out cabinets, and purchasing a new set of appliances usually contribute to the high cost of updating the kitchen. However, there are simpler ways to refresh the kitchen without putting a dent in your wallet.

1. PAINT THE CABINETS Replacing cabinets with new oak or walnut ones can easily drive up the price of your upgrade, and are often unnecessary. Instead, try painting your original cabinets. Painting the cabinets with a fresh coat of white has the power of opening up a small kitchen, and can make it seem a lot more spacious. To create a kitchen with a little more personality, try painting your upper cabinets a light color, such as white, cream or light blue; and paint your lower cabinets a darker color, like slate, navy, or black. Chalkboard paint is another great option, and allows your cabinets to have a more practical use, such as keeping track of needed grocery items, important dates, or cabinet contents. Meanwhile, the kids can get creative with the lower cabinets, and hopefully leave your walls alone!

2. ADD UNIQUE TILES Tile is a great way to add color, pattern and personality to your kitchen without spending a lot of money. For a classic look, try a simple white subway tile backsplash. This can brighten up the kitchen without making it look too busy. If you crave a splash of color, try using varied bright colored or patterned tiles on the kitchen floor. Picking up a navy floral print tile can bring color and diversity to an all-white kitchen.

3. UPDATE & ALTERNATE FIXTURES & APPLIANCES Fixtures and appliances are most frequently used and often incur wear and tear very quickly. The good news is that changing out your handles and knobs is as easy as using a screwdriver. Hardware stores often have a wide variety of unique and colorful knobs that can add an instant dash of color. If you are cramped for room in the kitchen, try removing the doors from your cabinets. This will give your kitchen an airy feeling and allow you to display some of your nicer decorative pieces and those fancy or funky serving platters and china pieces.

4. SWAP OUT LIGHTING Adding more light to your kitchen will instantly make it more spacious and inviting. Installing a window can be expensive so, instead, try using light colors and new brighter light bulbs to brighten your space. If the existing recessed lighting is not cutting it, try adding pendant lighting above your kitchen island or stove top area. This will add extra light to your space and create a warm ambiance when desired.

5. ACCESSORIZE Accessorizing your home is a fun and easy way to give any space an instant facelift. It’s also a great way to express your personality throughout your home. Since space is often limited in the kitchen, it is important to remember that when accessorizing this space, items should be practical and functional, and counter space should be clutter free. Try colorful bookends to keep cookbooks in order, funky salt and pepper shakers, or a flea market woven rug to add instant and vibrant energy to the kitchen. Source: HGTV.com

DIY PLANTERS YOU CAN MAKE THIS WEEKEND Classic planters will never go out of style, but there are so many ways to get creative and give your plant and flower pots a unique twist. DIY doesn’t have to be difficult, even for those of us who are less than crafty. Transforming the way you showcase your flowers and plants is much easier than you may think, and it’s a great way to bring some personality to your living space.

HERE ARE 7 FUN DIY PLANTERS YOU CAN MAKE OVER THE WEEKEND

1. MINI SHELL POTS If your decor has a beachy feel, these adorable mini shell pots are a perfect addition to your home. Use hermit crab or snail shells so there’s enough space inside to add and secure the soil. Small-growing succulents will give an interesting look to these little shells and your home.

2. RECYCLED CANS When you’re finished with your canned goods, you can reuse the cans to create fun planters. Drill a few holes in the bottoms of the cans for drainage and then spray paint them any color you choose. If you’re more artistic, you can create fun and funky patterns. These little tin can planters add a great touch to window sills or table tops.

3. RUSTIC PLANTER BOX If you’re style of decor can be described as shabby chic, you will adore this rustic wooden planter box. If you have some old wood lying around that looks weathered, you’re in luck. If not, you can buy new wood and distress it using sandpaper. Measure and cut the wood to your desired size, then add pilot holes and screws.

4. FABRIC COVERED POTS Fabric covered pots help you achieve a detailed look without the hard work. Pick out your favorite fabrics from the craft store and grab some Mod Podge glue. Once you apply the glue to your terra cotta pot, smooth the fabric over and leave it to dry overnight. The next day, you’ll come back to a beautiful decorative garden pot.

5. MASON JARS Mason jars can be used in a variety of ways throughout the home, and planters are no exception. You can spray paint the jars in just about any color for a fun look, or leave them as is for a simpler feel. Just make sure to use small to medium sized plants to ensure they have plenty of room to grow.

6. CHALKBOARD PAINTED POTS Chalkboard painted decor has become very popular over the last few years. If you have plain ceramic planters lying around, you can give them a little edge by adding chalkboard paint to the entire pot, or just a small section using a template. Make sure you have some chalk handy to write the plant or herb names.

7. PAINT DRIP PLANTERS The paint drip technique is fun and super easy. Simply drip paint over the top or bottom of your planter, and voila, you have a piece of art. You can also use this technique on metal cans. Just drip paint over the edges of the cans to create unique flower and plant pots that add some stylish flair to your garden.

RENOVATE YOUR PLACE WITHOUT

BREAKING THE BANK

We all know that every home needs a facelift every now and then. Whether you’re trying to sell your home or turn it into a more elegant place to live, updates and renovations make a world of difference. These projects can sometimes be costly, so we’ve put together some ideas to add the most class for the least cash.

SOMEWHERE OVER THE RAINBOW

There’s nothing like a spectacular view to change your perspective. If you want to spruce up your digs, then your first step is to dust off that paint brush. Painting doesn’t have to be expensive or labor intensive - keep it simple and affordable by choosing an interior door or a single wall to liven up. Study how the lighting in your home affects this surface, and paint it with a fresh, bright color or a rich, deep hue. Remember that the success of a painting project lies in thorough preparation. For under $50 and a Saturday afternoon, you can change the whole feel of a room.

HARDWARE FOR HOME FLAIR

When selling your home, the kitchen should dazzle potential buyers more than any other room. But what if you don’t have the budget to replace your outdated kitchen cabinets? Replacing cabinet hardware is the next best thing. You may be surprised at how much of an impact a modern update from those old wooden knobs will make to the overall look of your kitchen, and for very little money. Plus, replacing hinges and drawer guides provides the perfect opportunity to clean out your drawers.

ROYAL ROOM RENOVATION

Every monarch needs a crown, so if you think your home is fit for a king and queen, show it with crown molding. There is crown molding for every budget, and it’s simple to install on your own. Like the perfect frame for a work of art, crown molding adds a nice finishing touch to any room. But why stop at crown molding around the ceilings? A chair rail around the dining room attracts the eye and protects the wall.

LIGHT UP YOUR LIFE

Ask a photographer, set designer, or painter what the single most powerful element of any landscape is, and they’ll likely give you the same answer: “Light.” If your renovation budget is too tight to knock down walls, build a patio, or install skylights, consider new light fixtures instead. A bold, modern fixture breathes new life into your space. Pay close attention to scale and light temperature for maximum impact. If your home has a vintage vibe, a ceiling medallion can add architectural interest.

ANOTHER MAN’S TREASURE…

So you took all this article’s advice, your home looks fresh and new, and you still have money left over? Great. Take that remaining cash down to your local architectural salvage or repurposing center. Salvage materials have been around as long as buildings have been built (and demolished), but the DIY spirit has never been stronger than it is today. At the salvage center, let your mind wander. Talk to the proprietors. More than likely, they’ll know about every tile, panel, and every kitchen sink. If you have an idea in mind, they will help make it a reality. And if you don’t have an idea in mind, you are still bound to find inspiration for your next home project. Source: HouseLogic

House Cleaning Tips to Make Your Walk-Through a Breeze Source: MerryMaids.com, AngiesList.com

Preparing your home for a walkthrough can be tough, especially when you’re still living in the house. Sellers often find themselves needing these everyday items, but don’t particularly want them to be seen by potential buyers. It’s likely that your house will be visited multiple times a week, so use these simple tricks the next time you decide to clean your house in a hurry. You’ll be ready for a walkthrough at a moment’s notice!

Bedrooms • LINENS Swap out your old linens and replace them with new ones that are crisp and colorful. Remember to tuck in the sheets at the corners so that the room doesn’t look as messy. Using pastels or bright colors can make the room look more vibrant and inviting. • CLUTTER Keep clutter out of sight. There is nothing that can kill a potential buyer’s interest quicker than a cluttered space! Clutter makes the space look small and dirty, so make sure that your bed, flooring, and counters are clean and clutter-free. Put everything out of sight — in drawers, baskets or in the closet. Keep some large bins in your closet that you can use to quickly dump items into and access them later when needed. • FURNITURE Clean furniture. Dust only takes a few days to accumulate, so be sure to regularly wipe down furniture with a damp cloth, or use the vacuum cleaner hose to get rid of dust and debris. Dust can lead potential buyers to the assumption that the house is dirty or has not been maintained, so make sure you don’t leave any dust behind. Try using long-armed dusters for those high or hard to reach spaces.

Bathrooms • MIRRORS Keep a clean bathroom mirror. It may sound minor, but guests tend to visualize themselves getting ready in this bathroom in the future, so you want to provide them a crystal clear view into what could be theirs! Use a glass mirror cleaner to wipe off marks, starting from the top corner and continuing in a circular motion. • TOILETS This goes without saying, but make sure the toilets are clean! Bathrooms are the one space that are almost always going to be frequented by your potential buyers, so again, you don’t want them to get the impression that the house is dirty. • FLOORS Mop the floor. This will make the bathroom look cleaner and more vibrant. It will also help prevent creepy crawlers from invading your space. Use a mop to quickly clean the floor of your bathroom, starting in the far corner and ending at the door of your room.

Kitchen • APPLIANCES The kitchen is often where a family spends the majority of their time together, and your potential buyer may be picturing themselves preparing their favorite meal in your kitchen during a walk through. For that reason, it is important to keep appliances looking new and refreshed. Be sure to wipe appliances down with a damp cloth, especially the fridge, dishwasher, ovens, and cooktop area. • SINK Be sure the sink is empty by clearing out your dishwasher and loading your dirty dishes. Nothing makes a kitchen less appealing than a dirty and cluttered sink. Clean your stove top burners before putting them back on the stove top for a neater look. • FLOORS Mop the floor and remove any sticky or stained spots. If you have hardwood floors, use a wood cleaner that you can spray on the surface to keep it looking new and sparkling.

Living and Dining Rooms • BLINDS Don’t forget to dust off or touch up the paint on your wooden blinds. Blinds are often forgotten, but can significantly impact the appearance of a room. Also, keeping the blinds open can draw in natural light, which will make the rooms seem more inviting and open. • CARPET Since carpet usually takes the hardest beating during the selling process, it is especially important to try to maintain its appearance and keep it looking refreshed and bright. If your budget allows, invest in a small carpet steamer or carpet cleaner so you can run it through the house at a moment’s notice before a walk-through. • PETS If you have pets, be sure to use the vacuum cleaner to suck up any pet hair that may be laying on the carpet, rugs, or furniture.

Six deck styles Which One is Right for Your Home? There

are many reasons to build a deck in your yard.

Besides

the added

value to your home, a deck gives you plenty of extra living space.

Nothing

is better than stepping outside onto a beautiful deck to enjoy a good meal, relax or entertain friends and family.

When choosing the appropriate deck style for your home, assess your living and entertaining needs. Do you enjoy eating outdoors? Do you throw parties often? Do you prefer to relax in the sun or under the shade? How many people live in your home? Will you have a grill or hot tub on the deck? Along with your personal needs, the size of your home and lot may also dictate the kind of deck you can install. A yard with an unusual shape or slope may call for a different style deck than a yard with a flat terrain. Start with these six options to find the deck that works best for your home.

I. Attached An attached deck is connected to the house. This is the most common deck style, usually built at the back of the house, and can be raised or level with the yard. This deck gives you easy in-and-out access and becomes an extension of your interior living space.

II. Island An island deck is a free-standing deck installed away from the house and out in the yard. You might have an especially lovely cluster of trees and want to take advantage of the shade, or maybe there is a pond or flower garden next to which it makes sense to build a relaxing seating area. Maybe you simply want to create a “secret garden deck away from your home. This deck is more an extension of your yard than of your house.

III. Floating A floating deck is built on a platform and seems to “float” above the ground. The foundation and structure pieces are hidden underneath. A floating deck is low to the ground and can work on uneven or rocky terrain, as you don’t have to worry about leveling the area like you would with a concrete or stone patio.

IV. Wraparound A wraparound deck is built on two or more sides of the house. It allows you to take advantage of multiple views, and when one side of the house gets too sunny, you can move to the shade while remaining outdoors.

V. Multi-level Multi-level or tiered decks are perfect for yards with steep slopes or uneven terrain, or for homes with two or more stories. Connected with a series of stairs or pathways, they take advantage of the great views a taller home has to offer and create several spots for entertaining and relaxing. Multi-level decks can also consist of wide stairs that lead down to the yard. Each stair is extended to become a mini-deck of its own, creating additional space for seating or entertaining.

Vi. Around a Tree If you have a grand old tree, consider building a deck around it. This style is similar to an island deck in that it’s not attached to the house. For a more natural look, add wood furniture and chairs for seating.

Get creative and have fun designing your new outdoor living space. Try built-in seating around the edge instead of traditional railings, add custom planters for an intimate flower or herb garden, or install an outdoor kitchen or fire pit on your deck. The ideas are endless! Source: Home Depot

HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST BATHROOM COLOR Choosing a new bathroom color doesn’t have to be an intimidating task. In fact, simple changes in wall or accent colors can make a drastic difference with minimum impact on your wallet. Here are some quick tips and ideas on how to select the color that’s perfect for your palette! Start by brainstorming. Do you want light or dark colors? Is there a specific theme you’re going for such as a summer retreat, a relaxing adult spa theme, or a family friendly bathroom? Once that’s decided, figure out which color you think would look best. Keep in mind that small spaces tend to look better when painted a neutral or a light color. Review all your options. Does your bathroom have good lighting? A sky light or window can make a huge difference. If you aren’t able to decide on one color, it’s pretty safe to choose a neutral color, base color, and accent color of your choice. Don’t be afraid to paint a small space on the wall to test colors once you’ve narrowed down your final options. Most hardware stores offer low cost or even free paint samples, which saves you money until you’re ready to buy the final color. Consider wallpaper. Remember that paint is not permanent, and a wall color can be changed at any point, but if you are looking for an easier option than paint, then wallpaper is for you. Wallpaper has made a quick comeback in the design world, and there are so many patterns and colors to choose from. Test it first. To test out a wall color in your bathroom, try buying a single strip of self-sticking or peel and paste wallpaper. You can also find inspiration from a house in a design magazine, or try to recreate a bathroom you’ve seen on television or even in person! Creating a unique rendition of another bathroom allows you to personalize more of the details, and even save money on paint and other decorations. Paint to fit your mood. If a serene and calming bathroom is what you want, try shades and hues that you find relaxing. A relaxing bathroom wall color is the perfect way to unwind at the end of the day. If you’re feeling daring, let your wild side out in the bathroom by using a color that complements the rest of your home, but adds a unique flair like no other. Then use fun prints and accent colors to tie it all together! This can be done with hand towels, floor mats, small wall decorations, and even a small shrub or potted plant. Do what you feel comfortable with. If you’re apprehensive about painting your bathroom walls, swap out the hardware on the vanity and drawers for new and unique knobs. A new toothbrush holder, decorative shower curtains, or a piece of wall art could also be the color change your bathroom needs!
