JOINING THE FIGHT AGAINST CANCER

The Real Estate Book of Asheville/Hendersonville & NC Blue Ridge is partnering with Clean Streak Inc. throughout the month of October to raise awareness for and to donate to the non-profit organization Cleaning For a Reason in an effort to support local women battling cancer. Cleaning for a Reason is a nonprofit organization providing the gift of free house cleanings to women undergoing treatment for any type of cancer throughout the United States and Canada. Comprised of over 1,200 maid services who have volunteered to donate free house cleanings to women undergoing treatment for cancer, Cleaning for a Reasons' partners have served over 30,200 women since 2006. In response to receiving a large volume of cleaning requests from Western North Carolina, Cleaning for a Reason reached out to Clean Streak Inc. about six months ago inviting them to become the first provider of these free cleaning services in the region. The request came at the perfect time. Though Clean Streak Inc. typically does not offer private home cleanings as a part of their services, Clean Streak Inc.'s Regional Operations Manager of the Mountain Region Brittany Maziarz was searching for the right opportunity to reemphasize the value of community outreach that her father had built their family business on for over 20 years. Centered on offering cleaning services and aimed at helping local women in need, a partnership with Cleaning for a Reason was a perfect fit. Currently Clean Streak Inc. remains the only janitorial company in the region in partnership with Cleaning for a Reason. "Little things like cleaning up the house as a cancer patient can feel like a monument," said Maziarz. "It's something that really will change people's lives as they are going through treatment."

SPREADING THE WORD The first step to relieving women of the worry and work of cleaning their homes is getting the word out that these services are even available in Western North Carolina. To raise awareness, Clean Streak Inc. is hosting the first annual Pink on the Green Golf Tournament at Broadmoor Golf Links in Fletcher on October 13, 2018. All proceeds from this tournament will go toward providing women in Western North Carolina with up to two free home cleanings, allowing them to focus on their health and treatment. Maziarz hopes that this year's golf tournament will lay the groundwork for the event to repeat annually, and to raise the funds needed to sustain Clean Streak Inc.'s partnership with Cleaning for a Reason. "Coming out of this event, we hope that people know that Clean Streak Inc. is not going anywhere, that we are dedicated to Western North Carolina and that the money people spend with us is going back into the community," said Maziarz." SUPPORTING OUR COMMUNITY On a national level, The Real Estate Book donated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation this year, and similarly The Real Estate Book of Asheville/Hendersonville & NC Blue Ridge has chosen to join the fight against cancer locally through its partnership with Clean Streak Inc. and Cleaning for a Reason. Overall, Maziarz has been impressed by the response she has seen in people’s willingness to support the cause. “Everyone has someone in their family who has been affected by cancer,” she said. “It is a really relatable issue.”

A LOOK AT COMMON & UNCOMMON TYPES OF BREAST CANCER

As you may or may not know, breast cancer isn’t a “one type” kind of cancer; there are many types that vary in how common they are. Breast cancer can begin in different areas of the breast — the ducts, the lobules, or in some cases, the tissue in between, and each area can have a different kind that is more prevalent. There are many types of breast cancer, including non-invasive, invasive, and metastatic breast cancers, as well as the intrinsic or molecular subtypes of breast cancer. The most common types are ductal carcinoma in situ, invasive ductal carcinoma, and invasive lobular carcinoma. Most breast cancers are carcinomas. Carcinomas are tumors that start in the epithelial cells that line organs and tissues throughout the body. However, in some very rare types of breast cancer, the cancer cells may not form a lump or tumor at all. A biopsy is performed to determine the specific type of breast cancer. At that time, a pathologist will also see if the cancer has spread into surrounding tissue. Depending on whether it spread, there are two types: in situ breast cancers, which have not spread to surrounding tissue, and invasive or infiltrating breast cancers which have spread into the surrounding breast tissue.

COMMON TYPES OF BREAST CANCER Ductal Carcinoma In Situ (DCIS): DCIS is a non-invasive breast cancer. About 1 in 5 new breast cancers will be DCIS, and almost all women with this early stage of breast cancer can be cured. Ductal means that the cancer starts inside the milk ducts, carcinoma refers to the cancer beginning in the tissue, and in situ means “in its original place.” DCIS is considered non-invasive because it hasn’t spread beyond the milk duct into any surrounding tissue. DCIS isn’t life-threatening, but it does increase the risk of an invasive breast cancer coming later, or DCIS returning. Invasive Ductal Carcinoma (IDC): IDC is the most common type of breast cancer. About 8 out of 10 breast cancers are invasive ductal carcinomas. Invasive means that it has spread to surrounding breast tissues. IDC starts in the cells that line a milk duct in the breast, breaks through the wall of the duct, and grows into the nearby breast tissues. After that, it may spread to other parts of the body through the lymph system and the blood stream. IDC is most common in older women; two-thirds of women are 55 or older when diagnosed with IDC. UNCOMMON TYPES OF BREAST CANCER Inflammatory Breast Cancer (IBC): Inflammatory breast cancer is an uncommon type of invasive breast cancer that accounts for only 1% to 5% of all breast cancers. However, while rare, it is aggressive. IBC starts with the reddening and swelling of the breast, instead of a more common lump. It tends to grow and spread quickly, with symptoms worsening within days or even hours, which makes it very important to recognize symptoms and seek immediate treatment. Phyllodes Tumor: Phyllodes tumors are rare breast tumors that develop in the connective tissue (stroma) of the breast as opposed to the ducts or lobules. Most are benign, but there are others that are cancerous. Paget disease of the nipple: This cancer starts in the breast ducts but spreads to the skin of the nipple. It is rare, accounting for only about 1-3% of all cases of breast cancer. Angiosarcoma: Sarcomas of the breast are rare, making up less than 1% of all breast cancers. They start in cells that line blood vessels or lymph vessels, and can involve the breast tissue or the skin of the breast. Some of these may be the result of radiation in the breast area.
