EDITOR’S NOTE It’s been a positive, with tentatively encouraging signs of growth both in the job market, and the economy in general. However, I’m still keeping my digits crossed as we are certainly not out of the woods yet. The job market is still a very challenging arena and the most important thing for job seekers today is to stand out from the crowd. Competition for jobs is fiercer than ever, so going the extra mile just isn’t enough these days. Fortune favours the bold and only those who seek it. The reality is that if you want to succeed you need to go an extra 20 miles: there is no alternative. When you find a job you want, you need to focus 110% on getting it. The key things are research; preparation; ambition; enthusiasm; dedication. This first issue of Human Capital should give you a head start, it’s packed with career options, inspirational advice, and recruiters looking for people like you. I’m delighted to once again be a part of this positive magazine. Now, it’s over to you… Warm Regards, Editorial Team

CAREER ADVISORY 8 Human Capital Jan & Feb

DISCOVER YOUR PASSION Have you ever heard of the saying, “Choose a job you love and you’ll never have to work a day in your life”? The idea of doing something that you are passionate about as a job sounds awesome, doesn’t it? But what if you have no idea where your passion lies in the first place?

Here are a few questions to ask yourself to help you discover your passion. What were the things you enjoyed doing as a kid?

Have you lost track of time while doing something?

When you were a kid, before you were restricted by what society thinks you should and should not do, what were the things you did that made you feel awesome? Whether it was drawing, writing stories, or creating your own city using building blocks, what did you love to do as a child?

Try to recall those times when you were completely “in the zone” that you didn’t even notice hours had passed by. Whether you were finding a solution to a math problem, sewing clothes or even teaching a child how to spell, whatever you were doing then i s mo st pro babl y so meth i n g yo u a re passi o n ate about.

What gets you excited?

What are the things you are willing to do for free?

Sometimes, there are certain things that you can’t help but feel excited about – be it the prospect of making a short film, planning a party or solving a mystery – and these are the things that you should take note of when deciding on your career path. Your job will never be dull.

If you find that you are more than willing to help a friend bake a cake, design his living room or set up a website for him for free, then you most probably love it… or him.

What are your unique strengths? Throughout the course of your life, what are the things that people say you are good at? What are the things you have done that people thank you for or compliment you about?

What is something that you just can’t not do? What is something that you feel you must do before you die? Or something that you feel you must do something about or you will never be at peace with yourself.

If you still can’t figure out your passion by the end of these questions, don’t fret. Life is about experiencing things. You will learn more about the things that you like and dislike as you go along. So, don’t be afraid to try different things before you discover your passion. In the words of Coldplay, “If you never try, you’ll never know.”

COVERAGE / CAREER FAIR 10 Human Capital Jan & Feb

COME ONE, COME ALL,

COME PREPARED “

Prepare, prepare and prepare,” said UEM Sunrise Berhad Human Resource and Administration Senior Manager Tengku Hazrizal Tuan Mohd Ghazali when asked for advice for people coming to career fairs looking for a job. When met at the Penang Career and Postgraduate Expo 2014 in November, Hazrizal said one of the things that job seekers should do to prepare themselves before attending a career fair or even an interview is to research about the job that they are looking to apply for. Employers want to hire people who can hit the ground running – when they join, they can immediately contribute,” Hazrizal added. IJM Corporation Berhad Recruitment Executive Carolynn Kok, who was also present at the event, said another thing that job seekers should do before attending a career fair is to research which companies will be there.

Carolynn said, “They must know what the companies do. Before the career fair, you can glance through the list of exhibitors and target which [booths] you would like to come over to.” Carolynn explained that even a quick Google search to see what a company is about and what vacancies they have can help job seekers make a better impression on the recruiters. “If I [as a recruiter] find you really impressive and am interested [in hiring] you, then I can directly give you my name card,” Carolyn added. When asked whether she had managed to recruit people through the event, she said yes and mentioned that last year the company had hired about ten people via the career fair.

Meanwhile, Hazrizal said on the first day of the event he had hired five job seekers after interviewing each of them at the interview room that was provided at the exhibition hall. Penang Career and Postgraduate Expo 2014, organised by PenExpo, was held on the 22nd and 23rd of November 2014 at Penang International Sports Arena in Bayan Lepas, Penang.

Exhibitors at the event included top tier companies looking for future employees like RHB Banking Group, IJM Corporation, Continental Automative Components and UEM Sunrise. The event provided a great platform for job seekers to meet face to face with potential employers and for employers to recruit people, build their brand and increase awareness for their companies. There were also universities and colleges offering postgraduate courses for students to explore educational and training opportunities.

9 Tips for success

COVERAGE / CAREER FAIR 12 Human Capital Jan & Feb

Set Goals

SET GOALS of what you want to achieve when you attend the career fair. Which jobs and companies are you targeting? Tip: Contact the event organizer to find out which companies will be there. They will gladly help you out.

OUTFIT Plan PLAN Research about the dress Outfit code for the companies

that you are targeting. The safest choice of outfit would be business casual, but some companies allow smart casual as well. Tip: Wear comfortable shoes as you will be doing a lot of walking and waiting in line.

UPDATE CV Prepare appropriate CVs based on the

Research

RESEARCH

What does the company that you are targeting do? What does the job that you are applying for entail? What are the requirements needed to apply for the job? A quick look at the company’s website will help you answer these questions. Tip: Avoid asking the recruiters what their company is about. The answer is just a quick Google search away.

different positions that you are applying for. Highlight skills and experience that would be relevant to specific jobs. Tip: Have at least three copies of each version of your CV. Print out extra copies of your CV just in case you come across other companies that you did not target but find interesting.

PREPARE DOCUMENTS Make sure you have enough

copies of every version of your CV. Prepare other relevant documents such as your portfolio. Arrange everything neatly in one folder so you can easily access them. Tip: Do not put everything in a backpack as this will make you look unprofessional when you have to fumble around inside your backpack looking for the documents.

at a career fair Arrive Early

ARRIVE EARLY You know what they say, “the early bird

catches the worm.” Would you want to meet potential employers at the end of the day, when the exhibition hall is packed with people and everybody is tired, or would you prefer to see them when they are fresh and all geared up to meet potential employees? Tip: Start with employers that you are least interested in. This will help you gain confidence when you approach your top-choice employer.

BE ENTHUSIASTIC

Offer a firm handshake and a smile when meeting the recruiters. Listen to what they say and give feedback. Ask for information that you could not find online regarding the company and the position that you are applying for. Tip: Maintain eye contact when talking to the recruiters. Nothing says you are paying attention and that you are interested in what the other is saying more than a maintained eye contact.

Be Enthusiastic

COLLECT CARDS Ask for the recruiter’s name card

before you end your conversation with them. You might want to contact them later via email to say thank you and reaffirm your interest in working for the company. Tip: Be proactive. Do not just wait for the employers to contact you. Instead, stand out from the crowd and contact them first. Most job seekers neglect to do this.

PRACTISE A PITCH

Be prepared to answer the mandatory “Tell me about yourself” question. Construct a simple response which includes your general background information and relevant experience to the job you are applying for. Tip: Make sure your pitch is under two minutes since there will be other people waiting to talk to the recruiters there too.

KEY POINTS FOR A GREAT CV

Writing a Curriculum Vitae or CV as it is commonly known, is your chance to tell your story. You need to tell it in a way that will make a potential employer call you up. So it is important to write an exceptionally good quality CV. Try to put something extra other than your academic qualif ications or experiences. These ‘extra’ can set your CV apart from the rest. KEEP THE FOLLOWING THINGS IN MIND WHEN YOU NEED TO WRITE A CV :

MAKE IT LOOK GOOD A clean layout can enhance your CV. It also shows that you are careful and have thought about what you are doing.

USE A COMMON FONT Always use a familiar font for your CV. Calibri is one of the best as it shows up well on a computer screen. Other choices are Arial and Verdana because these fonts are easy to read. Unless you are applying for a very creative position and want to impress, use an easy-to-read font. Keep the font size above 11.

SPELLING AND GRAMMAR

No one wants to employ someone who is not interested enough to check (and recheck) his bio data. You should never make any errors on your CV.

LENGTH Most CVs are sent via email. Pay attention to how long your CV is. There is no need to fill the CV with unnecessary info. Remember that someone at the other end has to read it. So keep your CV to two pages the most.

SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS Most employers want their applicants to have some extra qualifications. Communication skills, team work etc. so remember to include these skills in your CV

USE DIFFERENT CVS FOR DIFFERENT JOBS Organize your CV to match the post you are applying for. Remember to include the relevant info and mention the skills you have to show that you are the right candidate for the job.

USE THE CORRECT REFERENCE Provide accurate and current information (name, designation, contact info) about your reference. Inform the person first and get permission before putting his/her name as your reference.

THINK OF AND FIND OUT THE CAPABILITIES THAT YOU HAVE WHICH THE EMPLOYERS ARE SEARCHING FOR.

Interview Essentials

You only get 30 seconds to make a good first impression. It also takes that much time for your interviewer to decide whether they really want to interview you or just ask you general questions. So from the time you walk through that door, plan to create an impression - to project a good professional image.

But if you want to stand out from the crowd and be the chosen one, here are some tips to follow.

Your interviewer is sizing you up even before you open your mouth. Your resume wouldn’t speak for itself. For a good resume to be effective, you have to look the part and act the part. Remember, you are just one of the many candidates for the job.

Maintain Eye Contact

Research On The Company Before Hand

5

Find out what they do, what their goals are and what you would be doing. Outline a few questions that you will ask if you have the chance during the interview.

Exhibit Positive Body Language

1

Arrive Early

2

Allocate time for traffic and unforeseen events. However, being too early (one hour early) clearly shows that you’re desperate for the job. A good 15 to 20 minutes before your schedule is best.

Dress To Impress

3

Choose an outfit that suits with the position you have applied for. Dress on the conservative side. Skirts and heels are preferred for the ladies. Suits and leather are a must for males. You don’t want to be overdressed or under. Aim to strike a balance.

Portray Confidence

4

Walk straight, chin up and tummy in. Offer a firm handshake and introduce yourself confidently. B e e n e rg e t i c a n d e n t h u s i a s t i c . However don’t be over confident.

When you meet the interviewer, look him or her in the eye. It can be very challenging but never lower your gaze. Smile but maintain eye contact and don’t be the first one to break it. It will show that you’re not intimidated by them.

6

While you will definitely be nervous during the interview, you must do your best to hide it. Try not to repeat yourself too much or fidget. Don’t cross your arms over your chest or close your palms on your lap. Keep them open on top of the table or just by your side. That shows you’re open to suggestions or you’re willing to accept them. Smile and nod. It shows your openness to learn and accept criticisms and challenges.

Don’t Be Caught Off Guard

7

Go prepared with everything you need for the interview. Make sure that you have researched the position. For instance, if it is a sales position make sure you understand their products and services. Prepare several questions about the job description and the company in order to look attentive and interested. Visit the company’s website, and read up its mission statement and core values.

Being invited for a job interview is a great opportunity. And it is not a drama – it is real people talking to real people. So remember to present yourself as

your true self!

TIPS

TO ANSWER INTERVIEW QUESTIONS

Many questions will give you the chance to connect your qualifications to the job and to show that you are interested and excited about the job. Use these opportunities to show that you are the best fit! Other questions, however, may be negative –

What is your biggest weakness? Tell me about your worst boss? Why didn’t you like your internship? Review these questions and practice how you will answer. Chances are you will be asked at least one of them! However, don’t memorize the answers as it will sound fake.

TELL ME ABOUT YOURSELF

WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF FIVE OR TEN YEARS FROM NOW?

This is a standard question designed to break the ice. Don’t tell the interviewer your life story. Keep your answer connected to the job. Be specific, and take about two minutes.

Focus on your career advancement goals. Tell the interviewer that you hope to be in a role that allows you to make a greater contribution to the company.

WHY SHOULD THE COMPANY HIRE YOU?

WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST STRENGTH OR WEAKNESS?

This question is where you sell yourself. Tell them something about what makes you unique or different and what you can contribute to the company. Talk about the plus points you have to match what the employer is looking for.

WHY DO YOU WANT TO WORK HERE? Be enthusiastic but be sincere. Don’t say it’s your dream job unless it really is. Show your future employer that you have done your homework, and you know about the organization. Let them know what you can bring to the company. Don’t mention money or benefits. Your answer should be about the organization and not you. Interview questions can be very tricky and you should be careful in answering them. Your future career depends on how well you deliver your answers. Respond correctly, just relax, and be yourself. And you should land the job!

Relate your strength to your job. Be sure to emphasis your strengths by giving examples in real life situations – it will allow the interviewer to see your skills in practical terms. When answering about your weakness, the worst thing you can say is you can’t think of one or you don’t have one! Be honest but pick a weak weakness. Another approach is to talk about a weakness you have improved upon, and explain how you have become more focused or organized after working on your weakness.

TELL ME ABOUT A TIME WHEN YOU HAD TO HANDLE A DIFFICULT PERSON/ SITUATION Remember that you need to give a positive answer. Don’t bash your professor, teammates, co-workers or your boss. Show that you can solve problems, not add to it.

Questions to ask your interviewer

When you are given the opportunity to ask questions during the interview, make sure you ask some questions. It shows that you have an interest in the company. Think of some questions first, and be prepared to ask at least three questions. Ask questions that are related to the company’s management style or specific questions about the job you are applying for. Remember to ask your questions in a logical sequence.

HERE ARE SOME QUESTIONS YOU CAN ASK:

1

Why

did you choose to work for this company?

You can ask this of an interviewer of hiring manager. It gives the person a chance to ‘sell’ the organization and gives you an idea why someone would want to work there.

3

How would you describe

your company culture?

You can pose this to either to the interviewer or hiring manager. Again, it’s a chance to look at what it might be like to work in the company and decide if you are a good fit.

5

What are the key challenges

facing the person in this position? What are your expectations for the role?

2

WHY WHAT HOW

What

do you do in a typical work day/week?

This is a good question to ask a hiring manager. It shows that you are interested in life on the job, and gives you a hint of what to expect.

4 What 6

With whom would I be working?

Who would be my supervisor?

is the next step in the hiring process? When will you make your decision? May I call you? When is a good time?

Too Cool For School ? No matter how much we dislike school, it might just prove to be vital to us when we are looking for a job

W

e all experience that moment in school where we would get frustrated with the never-ending classes and wish that we could just go out into the real world and start working already. The idea of dropping out of school and getting a job suddenly appears to be enticing. Why waste time learning things in school when we can jump straight into the working world and learn everything we need to learn from there, right? Well, the thing is, in order to even be considered for a job, we need to have a formal education first. At least that is what the latest Labour Force Survey Report by Malaysia’s Department of Statistics suggests. Based on the report, the number of people with at least secondary education was more than three quarters of overall employed people in the country in both 2012 and 2013. In fact, there was a slight increase in the percentage of employed people with secondary and tertiary education between those two years; from 80 per cent in 2012 to 80.5 per cent in 2013.

(Source: Labour Force Survey Report, Malaysia, 2013)

Employed people based on level of education in 2013

No formal education Primary Secondary Tertiary

And that’s not all. There was also a whopping 3.5 per cent rise in the number of people with tertiary education who were employed in high-skilled jobs category in 2013 compared to 2012. Jobs categorised as high-skilled include managers, professionals, technicians, associate professionals, professionals and also jobs in the services sector which made up more than half of the employment in 2013. It is then not a surprise that the report points out how most of the population in the labour market were educated.

“Education – we can call it as a ticket for entry” Tengku Hazrizal Tuan Mohd Ghazali

According to the report, the percentage of people with secondary education in the labour force (which included all people who were able to work – employed or otherwise) had increased from 65.8 per cent in 2012 to 67.5 per cent in 2013. The same goes for the percentage of people with tertiary education in the labour force – which had increased from 65.1 per cent in 2012 to 66.3 per cent in 2013. The report also indicates a decline of 0.4 per cent from 56.1 per cent in 2012 to 55.7 per cent in 2013 of those in the labour force without a formal education.

EMPLOYMENT MARKETING INFO

According to Tengku Hazrizal Tuan Mohd Ghazali, Senior Manager of Human Resource and Administration at UEM Sunrise Berhad, a property development company, education is an important criteria that they consider when hiring people. “Education – we can call it as a ticket for entry,” he says. So, for those who are thinking of dropping out of school or college, hold on! All those years of learning and staying up late to finish up on assignments might just prove to be useful later on.

This shows how people in the country have recognised the need for education (at least at SPM level) in order to find a job. Therefore, in this day and age where unemployment rate in the country is still on the rise (it was 3.0 per cent in 2012 and rose to 3.1 per cent in 2013), it is important to know the requirements that are needed in order to secure a job.

CONNECTING AND

EMPOWERING PEOPLE

A

s people were losing jobs and f inding it hard to make ends meet when the world was hit by a global economic recession in 2008, more and more employers and employees started to look toward part-time jobs to save or earn extra money.

It was around that time that an economics student, Michael Tan, with his two friends from a local university, Universiti Putra Malaysia, came up with the idea to build a recruitment company specialising in connecting part-timers to employers. Their idea was presented at a business plan competition called Entrepreneurship and Youth: A Learning Network (ELYN) 2008. The competition was organised by AIESEC, an international youth organisation that aims to provide young people with leadership development experiences. Though Michael and his friends did not win the competition, they managed to capture the attention of one of the judges, Gerard Lim, who, together with another investor, proceeded to invest in their business plan.

Michael took time off from his studies to start up the company and recruited his sister, Janet Tan, to join them, and voila! YourPartTime.com Sdn Bhd was officially launched on the 8th of August 2008. The company has since managed to place the best part-timers in the hands of the best employers through their online job portal, YourPartTime.com. To date, the website has catered to about 40,000 job seekers. Among the types of job placements offered on YourPartTime.com are part-time, freelance, temporary and full-time placements. The company has also taken part in various employment programs such as Project Revitalise where they collaborated with MCA ICT Resource Centre (MIRC), xTrain and MCA National Youth to revitalise the job market through the offering of retraining and part-time jobs placement in Malaysia.

Besides that, the company has been a constant presence at career fairs across the country, including job fairs held at campuses. In April 2009, YourPartTime.com was awarded with the ‘Most Promising Start-up’ by MIRC during the MIRC Annual Dinner and Recognition Award Night 2009 at Sunway Resort Hotel in Petaling Jaya.

A couple of years down the road, the company realised that there was a need for them to cater to the full-time job market too as they started receiving a lot of demands for full-time jobs and workers from their clients. Michael and his team eventually decided to take the leap and expand their company’s scope to include full-time job recruitment services as well. Then the company’s name was aptly changed from YourPartTime.com Sdn Bhd to Human Capital Connection Sdn Bhd (HCC).

HCC has had the opportunity to conduct training programs under the Microsourcing to Generate Income for B40 project

One of HCC’s most notable products is the KL Job Dating event which is held monthly, on the third Saturday of the month at KL Sentral. The event allows job interviews to be conducted in a casual setting like a restaurant so that potential employees and employers can get to know each other better. The first KL Job Dating event was held in April 2011 at Kenny Roger’s Roasters at KL Sentral. As of late, the event is held at Starbucks Sooka Sentral, at KL Sentral.

In October 2012, HCC became one of the partners for the Microsourcing to Generate Income for B40 project as part of Digital Malaysia’s initiative. Microsourcing to Generate Income for B40 project, with the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development provides training for the Bottom 40 per cent members of the Malaysian community, to enable them to work remotely from their homes to generate additional income for themselves and their family. It includes basic computer literacy skills training that will enable them to perform simple tasks such as data collection and data entry for corporations and organisations. Under the project, HCC conducts training programs at places such as Sekolah Bandar Baru Sungai Buloh. These training programs include activities like motivational seminars and basic computer skills training. One of HCC’s latest projects is publishing a monthly jobs and careers magazine to help youth prepare themselves in the working world. Looking ahead, the company plans to focus on campus job fairs and help students start to get ready for working lives so they would have a better chance at employment and excelling in the working world once they graduate. INTERVIEW 28 Human Capital Jan & Feb

MICHAEL TAN

[

CEO of Human Capital Connection

At the age of 28, while most of his peers are only at the beginning stage of their careers, Michael Tan Kim Seng runs his own award-winning company, Human Capital Connection Sdn Bhd formerly known as YourPartTime.com. Human Capital talks to Michael about how it all started, what motivates him and his company’s current and future events.

[

You took time off from your Bachelor of Economics studies in Universiti Putra Malaysia to start up your company. Why did you decide to do that? YourPartTime.com or now Human Capital Connection was started with my two friends and my sister. During my second year of Bachelor of Economics [in 2008], we presented a paper in a business plan competition organised by AIESEC. We had the chance to work on it full-time during the semester break.

I

n Chinese numerology, the number 888 means triple fortune. Did you have this in mind when you set up your company on the 8th of August 2008?

Actually, it’s not so much about the belief in Chinese numerology, but when we launched it, it just coincided with the Olympics in China – when they had their opening ceremony on the 8th of August 2008. We already had our web development done and our company registered in March. Then, there were a few rounds of conversation and meeting up with investors and the website development was completed in about July, August. So, we decided to have the launch coincide with the Beijing Olympics.

So, when the semester reopened, someone had to continue the plan of running the company. I volunteered to defer my study for two years to at least stabilise the business and my two partners went back to complete their studies. After two years, they graduated and they continued to run it while I continued my studies. Around that time, there was a recession and we found that what we were doing was very relevant because we were offering parttime and freelance job opportunities to people who were retrenched and could not find jobs. So, there was an opportunity to get our brand out there – because the timing was right. I mean things could have been different if I had continued my studies and graduated as we would have missed that window of opportunity.

INTERVIEW

There are a few reasons actually, on top of income generation, because, a lot of people seek part-time jobs to add to what they are earning right now. But, besides that, part-time jobs can equip students with the right exposure prior to their graduation – especially students who are on their semester break. When students graduate and they have some part-time experience, they can actually put that on their resume. On top of that, they will be able to do a better job when they start working. They will be able to have the exposure which can be utilised in their employment.

What did you gain from your part-time experience? I would say that the soft skills I acquired helped shape who I am today. Regardless of whether you are pursuing a career in employment or whether you want to start your own business, all these skills that you acquire through part-time jobs actually help – especially soft skills like selling skills, communication skills, interpersonal skills, relationship skills, and also, leadership skills as you learn to work in a team. You might not get to learn and practise things like these in colleges and universities – unless you are very active in co-curricular activities.

A lot of times, people work for money, but part-time jobs enable them to work for their passion. For example, there’s an investment banker who works part-time as a clown – not because he needs extra money, but because he loves kids. So, through part-time jobs, people are able to tap into their skills and, of course, monetise what they love to do. Of course, his bread and butter is still his full-time profession. So, the money that he earns from working part-time is just a bonus. Also, in a way, working part-time is a means for you to release stress and practise what you love to do.

Have you worked part-time before? Yes, I started working part-time when I was in Form Three, in F&B, at a hotel. Actually, the reason we came up with this business idea was because, when I was working part-time, people had always come to me asking, “Is the company that you’re working for, the event management company, looking for part-time workers?” And, at the same time, the hiring employers at the hotel that I was working with were also asking me, “Do you know any part-timers? We need people urgently.” So, there was a gap between people who wanted parttime jobs and employers who wanted part-time workers.

Returning back to your company, what are some of its most significant achievements so far? I wouldn’t say significant achievement, but I think what really makes my employees feel satisfied is the ability or the opportunity to give people jobs. For example, we might think that RM1,000 – RM1,200 salary is not much, but for some people, even RM900 can sustain a family of five. And when we went to visit a few of the waiters and waitresses that we had placed, they looked so happy and they thanked us for all the efforts we made to help them get the job. So, I would say our motivation or the thing that we are proud of is the number of successful placements we have made. Another thing that we are proud of is our contribution to college graduates in terms of things like their resume because sooner or later, when they do well in an interview and land the right job, we, in a way, have contributed to their success.

Human Capital Jan & Feb

29

Why do you think part-time jobs are important?

INTERVIEW 30 Human Capital Jan & Feb

Besides the satisfaction of placing the right people to the right company, what other things motivate you? Besides placement and also giving out income or growth opportunity to people, I think what motivates us is the ability to nurture people. And for people that do not have a particular skill, through HCC Academy, we equip them with the right skills and development opportunities so that they can improve themselves for the placement. Without that particular skill, we can’t help them get the placement. So, what motivates us is seeing the growth of the person and the process of their growth. For example, a person who does not have a particular skill, over a period of six or twelve months [of learning under HCC Academy], can be so employable that every company wants them.

“My mother told me before she passed away – and it’s in her diary as well – that the best gift that a person can give to another is to grow and mould them.” You mentioned something about how you wanted to empower people in one of your previous interviews. What are your methods in empowering people around you? On a personal level, I do a lot of mentoring. So, there are a lot of start-up companies, friends and peers that I have given advice to and of course that I have learned from as well.

One of HCC’s events is KL Job Dating, a monthly event held at Starbucks Sooka Sentral, where job candidates would be interviewed in a casual setting – much like dating. How did you come around to this idea? This idea is actually not our idea, but an idea from one of our interns from France, named Gordon. Basically, regardless of where your office is, there are always challenges and issues for people to come over. Location plays a very important role among job seekers. So, to resolve the transportation issue, we hold KL Job Dating at KL Sentral. Plus, there’s also a need for us to complement what we do online to on-ground. People want to see you. They want to speak to you, they want to hear you. This is the platform whereby it’s like a community meet-up where if people need help, they can come and see us.

What are other future projects and events by HCC? Next year will be a good year for us to focus on campus job fairs because we think that that’s a good niche for us to service. And rather than doing a lot of head-hunting and networking, we think that campus event is a good place for us to start acquiring students’ profiles in their first year of university. We don’t just focus on students who are graduating and pursuing internship, but we actually welcome first year students to join our campus job fairs and seminars. This will prepare them for their second and third year. We are targeting to organise about seven campus job fairs next year at private and public universities.

Lastly, what do you believe in most in life and what are some words you live by?

I think empowering is something that everyone should contribute to because it is always good to be a part of people’s success stories and to be able to contribute to their improvements.

I believe in talent development and in empowerment. My mother told me before she passed away – and it’s in her diary as well – that the best gift that a person can give to another is to grow and mould them. I still live by that.

If your five-cent advice today could help a person grow to be a better person tomorrow, then you have made an impact on yourself, on the other person, and maybe even on the economy.

Also, in the things that I do, like HCC Academy, campus job fair, and among our employees, we keep to that principle – meaning, seeing changes or improvements in other people’s lives. They can be your job-seekers, your employees, your friends or even someone that is more mature than you.

SPECIAL FEATURE 32 Human Capital Jan & Feb

It’s a Date!

T

hey say that a job interview is similar to a date. First, a person would ask you out based on what they have heard about you or what they have seen of your credentials which you may have put up online (think online dating or even social media sites).

Then, on the day of the date, you would have to come early, make a good first impression, tell your date more about yourself and at the same time get to know your date more in order to see if you two are compatible. Now, if only job interviews are done in a casual setting like a café or a restaurant, wouldn’t that be lovely? It will surely create a more relaxed atmosphere for potential employees and employers to get to know each other better.

It’s like dating. You meet at a restaurant and sooner or later, you might want to visit the person’s house and take a look at their lifestyle.”

Less Stress In A Casual Environment Michael says that one of the event’s objectives is to provide a casual environment for both the employers and job seekers to understand each other. “Most of the time you do interviews in a corporate office and it’s very formal. Usually they only ask questions [prepared in advance] and candidates will wear like a tie and coat and they are very nervous,” he says.

It was with this notion in mind that Human Capital Connection Sdn Bhd (HCC) created KL Job Dating back in 2011.

What Is KL Job Dating? KL Job Dating is an event organised by HCC, held every third Saturday of the month at Starbucks, Sooka Sentral (opposite KL Sentral). Candidates who have registered online with HCC will come to the coffeehouse at a specific time and they will be interviewed. Basically, interviews at the café are done in a manner similar to how a date goes – over cups of coffee and in a relaxed atmosphere – hence, the name of the event. HCC Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Michael Tan says, “Some companies will have a second and third interview. Sometimes, it is an immediate hiring or it can be a followup hiring where the person gets to visit their [company].

One of KL Job Dating participants, Mohd Shukri Ismail, 39, who attended the event back in November, says that the casual setting really helps make an interview a less stressful experience. Shukri recalls going to a company for a walk-in interview and having to sit in a classroom with over 20 other people to answer several exam papers beforehand. He says the setting reminded him of school and made him feel stressed. “If you compare that to this, even though you are also applying for a job, you feel more relaxed. It’s done freely. It’s just like nowadays when companies hold a meeting; it’s no longer in a room. It’s open. They have coffee and chit-chat like normal,” Shukri says.

LIFESTYLE I GADGETS

So, you have just landed yourself a job and do not have the money to buy fancy office gadgets… Well, no worries. We, at Human Capital, have tested several famous workplace hacks that you can try to make some nifty office gadgets – all by using binder clips!

1. PHONE STAND Making this phone stand is as easy as 123. Just clip medium-sized binder clips at opposite ends of a business card and, voila! Now you have a phone stand. This will be useful when watching a video on your phone or recording one. Just remember not to type anything on the phone while it is on the stand, though. It will definitely fall off.

2. EARPHONE HOLDER Truth be told, you can use just about anything to wrap your earphone wires around so that they would not get tangled. Nonetheless, using a binder clip does ensure that we can clip the earphone on anything we want (even our bag) so we can easily access it later.

3. CORD ORGANISER The trick is to insert a cord through the holes of the pressing levers of the binder clips and then clip it to your desk so that it would not get entangled with other cords. We found that this would work for those with relatively thin desktops – our desktops were too thick and we could not clip any of the binder clips onto them – and small to medium diameter cords (depending on the binder clip size).

Y

ou’ve spent weeks trying to land that big interview with your dream company and you finally got it. But before you step into that interview consult the guide below to make the best first impression possible.

SUIT

Choose a two-piece matching suit. Stick with conservative colors-navy or dark grey. Wool, wool blends, and other quality fibers are generally best for suits. Your suit does not have to be the most expensive to be the best. Make sure it is tailored to you.

SHIRT

Wear long-sleeve shirts in white, light blue, or a conservative pattern-even in the summertime.

TIES

For an interview, you can never go wrong with a two-piece suit and a matching pair of shoes.

Ties are a difficult piece to pick for a suit. Choose ties that are made of high quality silk with a slight pop of color, Look at what other men in your industry are wearing.

BELT & JEWELRY

MENSWEAR

Match your belt to your shoes. Keep any jewelry to a minimum. A classic wristwatch is usually the best choice.

SHOES & SOCKS

Human Capital Jan & Feb

WHAT TO WEAR & WHAT NOT TO WEAR TO AN INTERVIEW ?

Socks should be mid-calf length in a dark color. The shoes can be leather with laces or slip-on business shoes. It is always important to invest in a good pair of dress shoes

WHAT YOU SHOULD NEVER WEAR ? CHARACTER TIES

“FORMAL” SHORTS

TRENDY DRESS SHIRTS

POWDER BLUE SUITS

LIFESTYLE I FASHION

SHIRT

Wear a tailored blouse, good quality knit sweater, or shell under your jacket. Do not show too much cleavage or wear a shirt that is see-through. Hosiery should be plain or sheer in most instances. Wear a neutral color to complement your suit. For shoes, choose a leather pump in a color that macthes your suit, with a medium-height heel. Don’t wear jewelry or take a bag that is too ostentatious or costumey.

Looking presentable requires a bit more than putting on a new suit. You should be clean shaven before your interview. If you wear facial hair, make sure it is well-groomed. If you are unsure what facial hair is appropriate look at the other men in your industry. Makeup should be minimal and natural. Do not wear the smoky-eye look for your interview or red lipstick. Neutral shades and a single coat of mascara is appropriate. Every detail counts. For both men and women, clean nails are a must. Women should choose a natural shade if you do decide to put on a nail color - no neon.

The skirt should match your blazer in color. It should also completely cover your thighs when you sit down.

SHOES, BAG & JEWELRY HOSIERY

Two-piece suits for women should be fitted but not snug. Grey, dark grey, navy, or balck are all appropraite colors. If you choose to wear pants they should be hemmed so the cuff does not drag on the floor.
