Letter from the CEO With the holiday season upon us and 2023 coming to an end, I’ve been reflecting on all the animals we’ve helped this year. Animals like our cover dog, Harry, who had nowhere else to turn when he was discarded because he was too old. As you’ll see in the following pages, animals come to us for a variety of reasons; disaster, injury or illness, neglect and abuse, or being lost and alone. It has been our privilege for more than 100 years to save these lives because every one of them counts. I’ve also thought about the financial hardship so many in our community have experienced over the last 11 months. It is heartbreaking when someone comes to us to surrender their beloved pet because they can’t afford to feed them or pay for their medical needs. That is why programs like our Pet Pantry and affordable Animal Hospital are so vital to the community. Along with saving the lives of animals in need, it is our goal to keep pets in their homes with the people who love them. Finally, I remember all the ways this generous community has come together to help homeless animals. We simply could not have done all this great work without your support and, because of you, this year has brought much hope for animals and families in need. We hope that you will continue to support HSTB so that together, we can help even more homeless pets in 2024. YOU are the reason for HSTB’s success and resilience, YOU are the reason we are able to save so many lives. On behalf of the staff and animals at HSTB, we wish you a happy, safe, and joyous holiday season! For the Animals,
... because of you, this year has brought much hope for animals and families in need. Chief Executive Officer SherryS@HumaneSocietyTampa.org

Feature Story GIVING SENIORS THEIR GOLDEN YEARS
Older dogs and cats are among the most overlooked animals in shelters across the nation. The Humane Society of Tampa Bay (HSTB) believes that every life counts and that includes senior pets. It is always heartbreaking when an older pet ends up at the shelter. Not only can their health be more fragile than younger

animals, but they have a much harder time adjusting to the shelter environment after living with a family for their whole life; many of them become deeply depressed and withdrawn. HSTB has protocols in place to nurture these animals during their stay through extra play yard time and walks, enrichment activities and time out of their kennels in de-stress rooms or staff offices. Whenever one of these sweet seniors is adopted, it is especially gratifying to watch them walk out the door with heads held high and bright eyes trained on the future.
Harry, happy after a soothing bath at HSTB.
HARRY Abandoned for being too old, too dirty, too much, 12-year-old Yorkshire terrier, Harry, was brought to the shelter by a Good Samaritan after being found alone on the streets. He was dirty, painfully matted, confused, and anxious. Luckily, he didn’t have any serious injuries or medical conditions and began to perk up after a warm bath and healing brush. He began to enjoy attention from staff and volunteers, and even visited CEO Sherry Silk in her office (see photo page 2). It didn’t take long for him to find the family who believes he is “just right” and will make his golden years the very best ones of all.

More Senior Success Stories CRYSTAL Crystal, a 10-year-old terrier mix, came to the shelter when her owners entered assisted living and could not take her with them. She was a sweet, shy pup who grieved for her family and struggled to adapt to the kennel noise. But, even in her sadness, her spunky spirit shone through in the play yards and on walks. She was adopted by a family who was excited to cherish that spirit and bring back her joy!

SEBASTIAN Sebastian was brought to the shelter as a stray just before closing one afternoon. He was scared, hungry and very old (10+). As we do with every stray pet, we scanned Sebastian for a microchip, hoping he had a family looking for him so he would not have to stay long in the shelter at his age. Sebastian’s scan came back negative for a chip. Discouraged, the staff began to settle him in for the night, but something made them decide to try the scan again and a chip was found in his front leg (sometimes chips will travel within the body). When we called his owner she was ecstatic; he’d gone missing, and she was afraid he’d died somewhere all alone. In fact, just that day, she had updated her contact information on his chip “just in case” he was still out there. She was so grateful we had taken the extra time at the end of a busy day to help an old, lost cat that she gave us a generous donation. But, the relief in Sebastian’s eyes when he saw her walk through the door was gift enough for us.
MAX 10-year-old Max was surrendered to HSTB by his family. The sweet boy was so sad and, after a month at the shelter, seemed to be giving up. Thankfully, fate stepped in when Tyler and Alexandra saw him on our website and fell in love. They drove from Sarasota to adopt him and couldn’t wait to get him home and on the couch for a lifelong snuggle fest. Max went home with a happy heart and big smile.

Food & More.
Times are hard in this economic climate, and many Tampa Bay families are struggling to care for their pets. In addition to “Food”, the pantry also offers “More” freebies including collars, leashes, beds, toys, etc. Food & More assistance is given on a first-come, first-served basis.* You can directly impact families and pets in need by donating pet food and/or supplies to our shelter. BERNIE & DELTA These adorable kittens were brought to the HSTB Animal Hospital just hours apart on the same day. Bernie, a 5-week-old Siamese mix was suffering from a severe abscess and fever. Delta, just four weeks old, was rescued from oncoming traffic by a Good Samaritan. She was dehydrated, had minor abrasions, and was badly traumatized. When Bernie’s family decided it was best to surrender him to HSTB’s care, the staff decided to house the kittens together as part of their recovery. Kittens are very social animals and thrive with the companionship of other cats. As soon as Bernie and Delta were united, Delta’s spirits lifted, and both snuggled in to heal together. Once fully recovered, both babies were adopted into loving homes.
PRESSA Pressa, a four-month-old pit bull, was suffering from Demodex (mange). Her family tried to care for the symptoms at home, but the painful, itchy patches were spreading and getting worse. Although they were struggling financially, the family brought Pressa to the Animal Hospital because they didn’t want her to suffer. The hospital staff worked with the family so they could afford the medications she needed to heal. Pressa and her family were able to head home together, with hope. *American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) is the gold standard in veterinary care.

CALM WITHIN THE STORM HSTB RESCUE & RESP HOT CRISIS
HSTB saves seven puppies from dying of heat stroke. On an intensely hot summer day, seven husky mix puppies and their mom were brought to HSTB, all crammed together in one crate. The family’s body heat, coupled with the outdoor temperature, had turned the crate into an oven. It was immediately clear that, while Mom was uncomfortably hot but not in danger, the puppies had become overheated to the point of crisis. They were extremely lethargic with tiny lungs pumping desperately for air and swollen, bright red tongues protruding from their mouths (photo 1). Their temperatures hovered around 103o and if they continued to climb, it would be fatal. The medical staff immediately placed the puppies on ice packs and fed them sugar water while mom, Blue, received lots of love from staff and kept careful watch (Photos 2, 3 and 4). Thankfully, after 10 tense minutes of non-stop treatment, the puppies began to stir as their temperatures returned to safe levels. The family was then taken to the puppy nursery to rest and recuperate from the traumatic ordeal (photo 5). Once recovered and weaned, all seven puppies, and sweet Blue, were adopted by loving families.

ONSE ANSWERING THE CALL
When disaster strikes, HSTB responds. When Hurricane Idalia hit Florida, the Humane Society of Tampa Bay played an important role in response efforts. Working closely with FL SARC (Florida State Animal Rescue Coalition), HSTB joined an ad-hoc coalition of organizations to assist affected shelters with disaster response, animal transport, distribution of donations and supplies, and any other unmet needs. In addition to response coordination, HSTB took in 32 dogs and two cats from multiple counties in Florida and Georgia (a few of these animals are pictured below and at left). HSTB received praise from statewide and local disaster response organizations for the assistance given during this difficult time for shelters and animals in the storm’s path:
“[Humane Society of Tampa Bay] is an integral resource for disaster response in Florida.” ~Florida Association of Animal Welfare Organizations
HSTB is honored to help neighbors in need and grateful to our supporters for giving us the means to help animals in distress beyond Tampa Bay.
