Your unwavering commitment to the welfare of animals in our community helped us achieve incredible accomplishments in 2023, which I am thrilled to share with you in the following pages.

In 2023, the Humane Society of Tampa Bay saved 11,122 animals, demonstrating relentless efforts to provide a second chance for those in need. This remarkable feat is underscored by an outstanding 91% save rate, a testament to the organization’s commitment to finding loving homes for animals under our care.

Moreover, the Animal Hospital played a crucial role in the wellbeing of countless animals, performing an astonishing 20,554 surgeries and 30,441 wellness visits. Surgical interventions and hospital care not only contribute to the health and happiness of individual animals but also contribute to the overall reduction of pet overpopulation in our community.

As we reflect on these remarkable achievements, it is clear that the Humane Society of Tampa Bay is making a significant difference in the lives of both animals and people in our community. However, the journey doesn’t end here. With your continued support, we can propel this positive momentum forward into 2024 and beyond.

... Humane Society of Tampa Bay is making a significant difference in the lives of both animals and people in our community.

I invite each of you to join us on this journey of compassion and advocacy for our furry friends. Whether through volunteering, donations, or spreading awareness, your support will be instrumental in achieving the Humane Society of Tampa Bay’s vision for a more compassionate and humane community.

A TALE OF RESILIENCE

Cha Cha’s journey from hoarding squalor to the haven of home.

Meet Cha Cha, a sweet and gentle dog whose journey from a hoarding situation to a loving home is nothing short of inspiring. Resilient and full of grace, Cha Cha’s story serves as a testament to the transformative power of patience, care, and the unwavering commitment that are at the heart of HSTB’s lifesaving mission.

Cha Cha was one of more than 20 animals living in unsanitary, hoarding conditions. Amidst the chaos of neglect and confinement, Cha Cha gave birth to two puppies, adding another layer of complexity to her challenging circumstances.

Fortunately, Cha Cha and her puppies found their way to HSTB where they received medical care, baths and plenty of attention before being placed into a trusted foster home.

The trauma she had endured left Cha Cha timid, reserved and reluctant to trust, but her foster family refused to give up on her. Armed with patience and understanding, they made it their mission to bring the frightened girl out of her shell. Slowly but surely, Cha Cha began to respond as she gained trust and confidence. The nurturing environment allowed her to begin healing. By the time her puppies were weaned, Cha Cha was a completely new dog and ready to find a loving home.

When her adopters first met her at the shelter they immediately recognized her resilient spirit and knew that she was meant to be a part of their family. The once-fearful dog and her

puppies each found forever homes and left the shelter full of love, warmth, and the promise of a brighter future.

Cha Cha’s story is a poignant reminder of the power of kindness to mend hearts and save lives. With the continued generosity of our supporters, HSTB can remain a safe haven for thousands of animals like Cha Cha who are facing homelessness and adversity. This level of active compassion will transform the community into a place where no animal is left behind.

The Humane Society of Tampa Bay sees animals like Cha Cha every day; desperate, hungry, afraid and with nowhere else to turn. Your support allows HSTB to give them food and shelter, heal their wounds, and find them forever homes. Support HSTB’s life-saving work and make a difference in the lives of animals and make a positive impact on the community.

ANIMEALS

HSTB’s compassionate initiative nourishes pets and strengthens the community.

The Humane Society of Tampa Bay (HSTB) works tirelessly to improve the lives of not only animals but also the Tampa Bay community as a whole. One community program that embodies this commitment is “Animeals;” an innovative initiative that goes beyond traditional animal welfare efforts by addressing the intersection of pet care and social responsibility.

ANIMEALS OVERVIEW

Animeals is a pet food assistance program for homebound pet owners facing mobility and/or financial hardship. Recognizing the vital role pets play in their owners’ lives, the program seeks to ensure that families don’t have to choose between feeding themselves and providing nourishment for their furry companions.

KEY OBJECTIVES

1. C om bating Hunger in the Community Animeals addresses the issues of hunger and nutrition for both pets and people. When unable to provide pets with proper food, many owners sacrifice their personal well-being by sharing their own meals with their beloved animals. Animeals ensures that no family member goes hungry and that all receive adequate nourishment.

2.

Promoting Responsible Pet Ownership

By offering support to struggling pet owners, the Humane Society of Tampa Bay aims to promote responsible pet ownership. Animeals helps people prioritize their pets’ well-being in order to sustain the important human-animal bond that strengthens physical and mental health for both.

3. Keeping Pets OUT of Shelters

Pet owners struggling to care for their animals often face the heart-wrenching decision to surrender them to shelters. Animeals acts as a preventative measure, aiming to keep families together by ensuring pets continue to be fed during challenging times.

HOW ANIMEALS WORKS

The Animeals program is supported by the generosity of local citizens and businesses through donations of pet food, financial contributions, and corporate partnerships. Humane Society of Tampa Bay volunteers also play a crucial role in delivering the food and supplies to eligible families every month.

COMMUNITY IMPACT

Proactive programs like Animeals have been proven to decrease the number of pets surrendered to shelters by families facing hardship. Not only does this ease the burden on local shelters, but also maintains the healthy connection between people and pets. Keeping treasured pets fed and in their homes enhances the mental and emotional health of their owners, creating a positive ripple effect throughout the community.

HAPPY TAILS

Persian cats thrive in loving homes after their tragic loss.

When tragedy struck and their owner passed away, seven Persian cats found themselves at the shelter. As part of her estate plan, their owner had ensured that they would be lovingly cared for by HSTB which helped soothe the void and help them feel secure after the loss of their human companion.

Thanks to the compassion and dedication of the HSTB team, each Persian cat was carefully matched with adoptive families who were not only prepared to provide for their physical needs, but also committed to offering a loving and nurturing environment. The adoption process ensured that the new homes were vetted and set the stage for a bright future for the forlorn felines.

Months later, HSTB continues to receive heartening updates about each cat, and the monthly reports paint a picture of contentment, happiness, and good health. From playful antics to cozy moments of relaxation, these cats have seamlessly integrated into their new families, forming warm, forever bonds. The cats’ days are now spent basking in sunlit spots, exploring new nooks and crannies, and simply enjoying the company of their human companions.

The successful rehoming of these cats is a testament to the power of community support and HSTB’s unwavering commitment to animals in need. As they continue to thrive in their new homes, their journey stands as a beacon of hope, illustrating the future impact that planning for your pets can have on the lives of animals and the people who love them.

BEHIND THE SCENES YOUR SHELTER AT WORK

ENRICHING LIVES

Seven ways HSTB enhances shelter life in order to support successful adoptions

SHELTER LIFE

Dogs, known for their loyalty and companionship, bring immense joy to our lives. However, not all dogs are cherished family members and many end up in shelters looking for a second chance. Shelter life can be lonely and disorienting for these highly social creatures, taking a toll on their mental wellbeing. By incorporating enrichment activities into a shelter dog’s routine, HSTB improves the mental health of its residents, helps them become more adaptable, and increases their chance of finding compatible homes.

ENRICHMENT

HSTB provides activities and experiences that stimulate a dog’s mind, body, and spirit. These “enrichment” sessions are designed by staff animal behaviorists who facilitate them with the help of trained volunteers. Not only does enrichment enhance the dogs’ wellbeing, but it gives HSTB staff crucial insight into their behavior. This knowledge helps staff match dogs with families whose lifestyles align with their personalities, habits, and preferences. HSTB’s enrichment activities focus on the seven areas listed on the right and are tailored to each individual dog.

Physical Exercise

Regular walks, playtime, and interactive games support a dog’s physical health and helps them burn off energy.

Mental Stimulation

Puzzle toys, treat dispensers, and training sessions engage a dog’s cognitive abilities and energy levels.

Sensory Play

Offers a variety of scents, textures, and sounds to enhance a dog’s sensory experiences.

Social Interaction

Supervised group play sessions help dogs develop important social skills.

Temperament Assessment

Identifies whether a dog is outgoing, shy, friendly, curious, or reserved.

Social Compatibility

Assesses a dog's behavior tolerance for unfamiliar dogs, children, and adults.

Response to Stimuli

A dog’s resilience is measured through observing their reaction to loud noises, sudden movements, etc.

During Step 3 , the adoption coordinator will ensure that you and your new furry friend fit like a glass slipper on Cinderella. They'll guide you through any questions you have, offer insights and advice, and share tips for a seamless transition for both of you as journey from the shelter to home.

KINDRED SPIRITS

The symbiotic bond between children and pets brings countless benefits to families and the community.

Pets play a crucial role in the emotional, social, and cognitive development of children. The special relationship between kids and their furry friends has far-reaching benefits that go beyond the surface of simple pet ownership. Having a pet positively impacts children by:

• PROVIDING comfort and companionship

• TEACHING empathy and responsibility

• ENHANCING social skills

• SUPPORTING emotional development

• ENCOURAGING physical activity

Far from being a one-sided relationship, being loved by a child profoundly effects the well-being and happiness of any pet, especially one that has known the despair, fear, and loneliness of being homeless. Loving human “siblings” offer adopted pets:

• SECURITY and a sense of structure

• STRESS RELEASE through activity and affection

• COMPANIONSHIP and relief from loneliness

• BELONGING from children’s innate ability to connect emotionally with animals

• MENTAL SIMULATION through imaginative play

One of the greatest joys for HSTB staff and volunteers is to receive messages from adoptive families describing how the interplay between their children and adoptive pets contributes to the creation of a harmonious and loving family environment. The following pages offer a few of our most recent, heartwarming family adoptions.

CLEO

Thrown away like trash with her littermates, Cleo is now a treasured family member who sleeps safe and sound in the laps of her very own human siblings.

GHOST

Ghost spent most of her life living outside, isolated and alone. Because of her hearing loss she was often passed over at the shelter, until the day fate brought her two knights in shining armor. She is the apple of their eyes, and will never be alone again.

Family Focus – Supporting Children & Pets

MIA

Mia, just one of thousands of abandoned kittens that find themselves at HSTB each year, had just one wish – to find a best friend to share sunbeams with. One day a family brought their seven-year-old son to the shelter to adopt companion. Mia took one look at the young boy and knew. As he looked back into Mia’s beautiful eyes, their fates were sealed and the rest, as they say, is history.

BRODY

Brody was brought to HSTB after being found wandering on his own. He was never reclaimed and found solace in the constant presence of his only friend – a tennis ball. The Johns family came to the shelter with another dog in mind but when they saw Brody sitting quietly in his kennel, treasured ball in his mouth, they knew he was meant to be a “John.” The feeling was mutual as Brody proudly offered his beloved ball to his new friends throughout the entire adoption process. Now surrounded by love and attention from his human siblings, Brody’s days of loneliness are but a distant memory.

EMBY

Emby was abandoned in one of HSTB’s “last chance crates” during the night and was found scared and lonely by staff in the morning. It is difficult for albino rabbits, like Emby, to find homes because many people dislike the look of their reddish/pink eyes. After being at the shelter for more than a month, the Hodge-Hamilton family brought their son to the shelter for a very special Christmas gift – his very own pet to cherish. It was love at first sight for the boy. To him, Emby was perfect, pink eyes and all.

A WONDERFUL LIFE

The Christmas miracle that restored hope to a family in crisis.

Just days just before Christmas, Selena the Chow Chow became extremely lethargic and depressed, with no appetite or energy. Her mom, Ms. Hanely, was deeply concerned that something was seriously wrong but faced financial constraints that made going to a private veterinarian unaffordable. She rushed Selena to HSTB’s Animal Hospital hoping desperately that her beloved pet could be saved. When Selena arrived at the hospital it was immediately clear to HSTB veterinary staff that she was suffering from Pyometra, a serious and life-threatening infection of the uterus requiring immediate treatment. HSTB’s dedicated medical team wasted no time, whisking Selena right into surgery.

The prospect of losing Selena, along with the financial barrier Ms. Hanley faced, loomed as she waited

anxiously in the hospital lobby. Little did she know the Christmas gift she was about to receive. Not only was the surgery a resounding success, but HSTB’s SaveA-Pet Fund, designed to support pet owners in need, was able to cover all of Selena’s medical costs.

With Selena now on the road to recovery, hospital staff took the opportunity to educate Ms. Hanely on the importance of spaying as a measure that could have prevented Selena’s health crisis. This knowledge was empowering for Ms. Hanely in caring for her pets in the future. She was deeply grateful for HSTB’s commitment to not only treating but also preventing pet health issues in the community.

Thanks to the HSTB’s timely intervention and the compassionate support provided through the Save-APet Fund, Selena and Ms. Hanley rang in the new year together. Ms. Hanely's gratitude echoes the sentiment shared by countless pet owners who have witnessed the transformative impact of accessible veterinary care and community support that is provided by the HSTB Animal Hospital.

FOR THE UNDERDOG

Dynamic partnership expansion supports marginalized breeds.

The Humane Society of Tampa Bay has long championed programs that promote animal welfare and responsible pet ownership. Since 2017 HSTB has partnered with Dolly’s Dream, a national non-profit organization committed to enhancing the lives of pit bulls, to provide extra support, training and supplies to families who adopt them from the shelter. Recently this initiative was expanded to include grant funding from Dolly’s Dream that will provide free spay/neuter surgeries for 60 pit bulls at HSTB’s Animal Hospital

Dolly’s Dream was inspired by a lovable pit bull named Dolly who faced challenges due to breed prejudice, and is dedicated to changing perceptions about pit bulls and promoting responsible ownership. HSTB shares Dolly’s Dream’s commitment to responsible pet ownership and recognizes the importance of addressing the specific challenges faced by pit bulls.

The new collaborative effort, which is yet another proactive step towards a better life for pit bulls in Tampa Bay, will advance the following goals:

• Overpopulation Control

• Affordable Veterinary Care

• Educational Outreach

• Positive Community Impact

• Reduction of Strain on Shelters

• Empowerment of Pet Owners

• Positive Breed Perception

• Corporate Giving Campaigns: Companies organize fundraising campaigns or donation drives for pet essentials.

• Skill-Based Volunteering: Corporate teams leverage their diverse skill sets to enhance HSTB programs with everything from marketing and design services to IT support and more.

Outreach Partnership Program

HSTB's Outreach Partnership Program is designed to forge lasting connections between HSTB and local businesses, schools, and community organizations.

• Education and Awareness Initiatives: Raise awareness about responsible pet ownership, animal welfare, and the positive impact of community involvement through workshops, seminars, and informational sessions.

• Sponsorship Opportunities: A fun and unique way to associate your organization’s brand with HSTB’s reputable, community-centric events and development campaigns.

• Customized Collaborations: Partnerships tailored to align with the goals and values of each organization such as joint events, cobranded campaigns, or specialized projects.

The combined impact of these team building and outreach partnership programs extends far beyond the walls of the Humane Society of Tampa Bay. The programs’ holistic approach to community engagement fosters lasting connections, improves the well-being of animals in the area, and helps create lasting legacies of compassion, responsibility, and positive change in Tampa Bay.
