EDITOR’S NOTE
BALANCING YOUR EMPLOYEE BENEFITS When it comes to rewarding staff and implementing compensation and benefits programmes, many organisations throughout the region still seem to face a number of dilemmas. And it’s a difficult balance to keep employees happy. On one hand, you’ve got staff saying they want A, B and C from you to feel appreciated and rewarded – and you want to give it to them. You really do. Because you know that listening to their needs and trying to accommodate them is one of the best ways to retain good people in a tight, under-skilled market. Yet on the other hand, you’re reluctant. The cost can be huge, and you’re not even sure that what you’re able to offer will really make a difference and give you the ROI you can be proud to show your CEO. In fact, one recent study found that despite 40% of organisations in Asia Pacific spending a fifth of their payroll on benefits, just half of HR leaders believe their employees actually value what has been made available.
These in-depth discussions with a range of incredibly knowledgeable table hosts will rotate and take place throughout the day, meaning that by the end of the conference you will have had the chance to pick the brains of each and every one of them. A huge thank you to all the speakers, panellists, table hosts and sponsors for joining us at this all-important conference, and to all the delegates for making the time to be here. I hope you leave today with some refreshingly new knowledge about how to better manage your compensation and benefits strategies to get the balance right.
The same research also discovered a quarter of employers in both Singapore and Malaysia don’t even have a documented benefits strategy. If that’s the case, then it’s no surprise the ad hoc offerings aren’t having their intended effect. Thankfully, Benefits Asia Interactive is back for the third year running to help HR leaders and C&B specialists truly understand the promise – and pitfalls – of leveraging benefits to improve the attraction and retention of staff. As with every Benefits conference Human Resources has produced, we have an excellent line-up of experienced professionals to debate, discuss and share best-practices and case studies. But this year, as an added benefit (no pun intended), we’ve also decided to introduce our hugely popular interactive format to this growing conference to ensure you are given every opportunity to get the most out of this experience.

INTERACTIVE ROUNDTABLE SESSIONS 1. FLEXIBLE BENEFITS Allowing employees to choose the benefits that best fit them seems to make a lot of sense; it enables you to please more of your workforce, more of the time. It can also enable you to better attract and reward a diverse workforce. However, implementation can be cumbersome and getting the mix right is never easy – you need to understand what’s attractive to who and what’s good for you as an employer. This discussion will allow you to explore what others have done, and what the outcomes were. Discussion hosts: A) Khor Ling Ling, deputy director, performance & rewards, Changi General Hospital B) Rosaline Koo, founder & CEO, ConneXionsAsia
2. HEALTHCARE AND WELLBEING A healthy workforce is a productive and happy workforce, so surely a robust healthcare and wellbeing benefits package is in the interest of the employer and employee? How do you measure this, though, and how do you know where to set the bar? This discussion will help you better understand the true costs and benefits to your business. Discussion hosts: A) Eudora Choo, VP, benefits governance, APAC, Deutsche Bank AG B) Aditi Mahadevan, senior HR generalist, Citibank NA
3. MOBILITY One of the biggest challenges in maintaining a globally mobile workforce — from a strategic and logistical perspective — is determining which type of compensation approach to take with your assignees. Traditional expatriate packages based on a promise to “keep whole” are no longer necessary in many instances, yet making packages too “local” may fail to attract the right talent to cross borders for your company. In this roundtable session, explore how to negotiate between the maze of options available when developing a relevant and effective compensation and benefits strategy for relocated employees. Discussion hosts: A) Tom Farmer, Asia rewards director, NXP Semiconductors B) Hans Han, head, C&B, APAC, Huntsman
4. NON-CASH REWARDS Cash isn’t always king – learning and development sessions, flexible working times and career development opportunities are just a few examples of non-cash rewards that are an imperative part of any market-leading compensation and benefits programme. These rewards can drive productivity, engagement and retention, while also relieving pressure on your salary budget and recruitment challenges. This session will help you work out what works and what fits. Discussion hosts: A) Athia Tahzeeb, program manager, global rewards, benchmarking & pay structures, APJ, HP B) Mark Robinson, executive general manager, EMEA & APAC, Power2Motivate
5. COMMUNICATION The Achilles heel of many a brilliant compensation and benefits strategy is how well it’s communicated to those who it encompasses. If your employees don’t fully understand what’s available to them, how they benefit and what their options are, it could mean thousands of dollars down the drain and failing to hit your human capital objectives. Communicating the strategy up the chain is equally important, ensuring you align with the overall business strategy and get the buy-in you need. Talk through the dos and don’ts and build your own communication strategy. Discussion hosts: A) Ivy Liew, director, career & rewards HR, SMRT B) Neha Pareek, talent leader, APAC, Greater China & Africa, IBM
