HOST’S WELCOME The importance of employee development If you look at the business world as a whole and had to pinpoint an important aspect of management which is most often neglected, it would be fair to say learning and development would be right up there. The development of employees – that is, giving them the tools, knowledge and know-how to reach their full potential, thus allowing them to contribute the maximum amount to your business goals – is the absolute backbone of any management strategy. Not only is it about the bottom line, but we in human resources all know employees cannot contribute their best if they don’t feel like they’re being invested in. It’s this engagement and motivation to do more and be better which is the thrust of L&D.

With topics over the next two days covering issues such as current learning trends, constructing globally relevant learning programmes, outsourcing versus in-house training, eLearning and blended learning, data interpretation and social media as learning tools, onboarding, succession planning, measuring and analysing learning outcomes and training in a multi-cultural and generational workforce, we hope you will walk away from this conference with a few ideas, case studies and answers to take back and implement within your own L&D strategies. Your people need to have the room and support to grow, and we hope to be of assistance to you in helping you overcome these development challenges. Thanks for joining us!

We all know what happens when companies neglect L&D: You lose top talent. Doing a quick search online – or probably even just looking inwards into your own experiences – shows multiple examples of the fact that a lack of support in career development leads to a lot of early exits and forcing talent into a perpetual job hunt. Whether it’s on-the-job development or formal development, such as training, mentoring and coaching, career development, we can all agree, it is important. The question is, how do you know what works for you? What type of learning programmes will your varying employees respond to? What’s the most relevant to the business? What key competencies are your staff or management lacking? And where should you be spending your budget to overcome these gaps in skills or knowledge? It’s these burning questions which drove the production of Employee Effectiveness 2014. Rebecca Lewis Editor Human Resources

Teamie Teamie creates private social learning networks that transform training and collaboration within an organisation. Teamie connects trainers, learners, and mentors on a common platform, which is a unique blend of different features that helps organisations do away with multiple systems: • Whiteboard for posts and sharing of information through multimedia elements such as video, audio, links and images (collaboration). • Learning Management System that allows trainers to create feature-rich learning resources and different forms of assessments (LMS). • Reports that give administrators real-time insights on the use of the platform, the level of engagement and group performance (reporting). Teamie can be accessed through web browsers and mobile apps (iOS and Android), and thus extends learning and development beyond physical boundaries, enables easier management of the learning process with transparent communication, and creates an engaged learning community.
