EDITOR’S NOTE
Realising the true potential of branding What does it really mean to be an employer of choice? In the current labour market, skilled professionals are not short of choices and options, and many companies are falling over themselves to make sure they provide and offer the best – whether it’s the best salary, on-boarding experience, office environment or other perks – to attract and retain the brightest talent. But when it comes down to the wire, being seen as a top employer is about two things: 1. Offering attractive positions which show you have the capacity to continue to develop people filling those roles. 2. Ensuring your workforce knows this, understands this, and talks about it in a positive manner with external and internal networks. The importance of this cannot be overlooked. Your core values – whatever they may be – need to be strongly embedded in your workforce and promoted through a high performance culture where these values are understood and adhered to. But we know that saying these things and actually being able to effectively change culture and put this into practice are two very different things. Frankly, if it were easy, more companies would be seen as an employer of choice. That’s why we’ve joined forces with Universum to bring you Employer Branding APAC 2014 to help your people and your business survive and thrive in this increasingly competitive landscape. Because at the end of the day, investing heavily in attracting and retaining the right people will never be fruitless. I hope you enjoy this conference and walk away with a number of new innovative ideas and practices which will help you truly call yourselves “the best”.

UNIVERSUM’S WELCOME NOTE The war for survival starts with the fight for brainpower What do Nokia and Kodak have in common? They once were top of their industry, but lately have been outsmarted by smaller companies with more innovative people and ideas. Why? Many companies are simply not yet taking seriously their appeal as an ideal employer and are failing to attract, recruit and retain the right skilled people. Companies need to be aware that if they don’t take this topic seriously, they will lose out to other international or domestic companies who are better prepared in this arena. Finding the right people is in fact a really hard task. We all know that. • Current demographic trends are a threat to the availability of skilled people. Despite a growing global population, the availability of skilled workers is actually shrinking, and no longer just in advanced, ageing countries such as Japan and Italy. Now, some emerging markets, such as China and Russia, are also feeling a demographic pinch. • There’s a gap of skills in between what universities offer and the needs of companies. Although educational access is growing worldwide, not enough students graduate with the skills desired by global employers. • Those with the right skills are more and more starting to avoid existing paths or companies and taking an entrepreneurial avenue. • The competition for talent is no longer only played at the local level or among players in the same industry. Take the example of the automotive industry: they are crying out for good-quality engineers, but many of these engineers are keener to get into finance instead. • Communicating towards talent is becoming increasingly complex as more channels are being added and people’s attention is harder and harder to obtain as media consumption increases. There’s no way around the fight for brainpower. Companies need people to survive and thrive; after all, it’s not the companies who work, it’s the people. In conclusion, there’s one key factor in all successful companies we’ve seen so far – top management is always involved. For long-term survival and growth, investing in attracting, engaging and retaining the right people must be at the top of the agenda. More companies need to take talent attraction and retention seriously, otherwise the likes of Kodak or Nokia will continue to happen. I hope you enjoy the Employer Branding APAC 2014, and always keep in mind that you need to keep innovating yourself and your employees to stay on top.
