OPINION Âť Unconventional wisdom

Your quest for perfection makes you a lousy boss Micromanagement and failure to delegate often comes from a desire to prove you’re the best. But in actual fact, you should do less in order to achieve more.

Anything is possible when preparing for the future LIZ DOWLING Global talent director POSSIBLE

What goes into building an organisational culture which is a perfect breeding ground for tomorrow’s leaders?

Moving forward: Developing the right talent and putting your people first will ensure your company has a great future.

Our people make us POSSIBLE, so we hire

the best, invest in learning programmes, provide a great culture and create careers – it’s not just a job. Building a great culture isn’t something you can create overnight. It’s an evolution that comes from the top down. Our CEO is passionate about our culture and, as a result, we’ve created “POSSIBLE Days” which happen once every three months. Every employee is taken through the same schooling, which ranges from focusing on our vision and values, learning about new products or simply celebrating great work and recognising our people. This year one of our highest priorities is to develop a worldclass training function. Every employee will have a development plan that focuses on their long-term career aspirations whether they want to become the next CEO or an expert in their craft. We have a continuous global employee satisfaction programme to ensure we are evolving and listening to our employees. We survey our employees once every four months and follow up with focus groups so we can truly understand what keeps people motivated and engaged. Our total rewards strategy is focused on more than just compensation. Offering career development, work-life balance, flexible working, competitive benefits and plenty of perks such as socials and gym memberships helps to retain and reward our people in competitive markets. So what makes a great culture? Our definition of a great and happy culture is – no hierarchy and collaborating and learning from each other to produce great work with smart people that love what they do. A culture is dependant on recruiting like-minded people.

However, when we say “like-minded”, it doesn’t mean we recruit carbon-copies, but rather look for people who share our philosophies and demonstrate our values. We make sure we recruit smart individuals who are upbeat, passionate about what they do, and who are committed to delivering the best to our clients. Communication is key – people need to understand what the business goals are and how they make a difference. Employees need to believe in the vision and embody the values. Of course, not every company can have the luxury of an open, creative environment where culture is led from the top. My advice is to focus on developing line managers that provide recognition, feedback, set direction and are approachable. Crystal-balling talent Because we work in such a fast-paced and growth industry there are always opportunities. Developing people with a diversity of skills and experience across our locations allows us to react faster and address skill needs as and when they arise. Ideally we will always want to promote from within, not only is it great for morale, but it also makes great commercial sense. Succession planning at all levels is wise because of the scarcity of experienced talent. We have plans to develop a grad and entry level programme so we can develop and tailor talent to the needs of our business. Emerging talent also keeps us on our toes – they are tech-savvy, learn quickly and question the status quo. Invest today in your talent programmes and adapt your culture and environment so you appeal to Generation Y. By 2025 they will make up 75% of the workforce so they will be the leaders of tomorrow and will determine the future success of your business.
