2014 is the year to review your talent acquisition strategies. Examining how to attract both active and passive talent in Asia. The war for talent continues to be high on the agenda across Asia, not only are organisations competing to find the best recruits, they are actively working on attraction strategies, investing in developing their employer brand and articulating what their organisation has to offer. Simon Bradberry, Resource Solutions Managing Director for APAC, predicts that there will be a big shift in talent acquisition strategies in Asia over the next 12 months as organisations try to better target their offering as an employer to the needs of both active and passive candidates. The findings of the latest Resource Solutions Asia Talent Insight survey revealed that:
• Just 17% of participants were passive candidates when looking for their current role, yet 82% will look for a new job within the next 12 months
• 99.5% of respondents use the internet to research a potential employer, but only 43% have ever used social media to actually look for a role
• 99% say they would consider a new job opportunity if recommended to them by a friend or colleague, and
• Over 80% say if they were to have a negative recruitment experience it would influence future buying decisions with that organisation’s product or service
The Resource Solutions Asia Talent Insight survey looks at the behaviours, motivations and needs around recruitment from a candidate perspective. Combine these results with the Resource Solutions 20 Questions survey, completed by HR and procurement professionals in Asia in 2013 and the findings become very interesting. Across Asia, the No.1 ranked recruitment priority for employers is to improve the quality of candidates hired, and yet there are a number of missed opportunities to make tangible improvements in applicant quality. For example, if 17% of hires are from passive candidates, but 82% of survey respondents expect to consider a new role in the next year, we believe that employers should be planning on how to leverage this population. This could include what information they have readily available online for candidates such as information on career sites, social groups, career zones or YouTube videos. Candidates will continue to seek out information online about organisations as an employer, presenting and promoting this information to both active and passive groups will become a fundamental pillar in organisations’ attraction strategies this year. Our survey shows that candidates utilise social media and online sources to research potential employers, but rely on more established methods when actually applying for jobs. Employers would therefore be wise to evaluate how they can increase and engage with their pool of passive and active candidates via online talent communities for example, whilst retaining more established sourcing methods which continue to be remarkably resilient in terms of successfully attracting talent.
Resource Solutions works in partnership with organisations to recruit the best talent. We understand the recruitment market place in Asia and utilise this insight to deliver operational recruitment best practice. We combine on-site teams of specialist recruiters and technology solutions that become an embedded part of our clients’ HR teams, enabling them to focus on strategic initiatives related to resourcing and other aspects of HR. www.resourcesolutions.com

WHAT DOES TALENT MANAGEMENT MEAN TO YOU? One of the biggest things I have learned about the true meaning of talent management is that being effective in this field is not simply about attracting, retaining, inspiring and strengthening your workforce.
the opportunity to do all this, then I assure you that what you will hear at Talent Management 2014 over the next couple of days will be highly useful.
Of course, these things are 100% necessary – after all, it’s the slogan for this annual conference you’re all attending! – but in order to make a real impact to the employees, and thus your overall business, HR professionals need to peel back the layers about what these actions really mean in a talent management context. How can you take those words, or that slogan, and apply them in a truly strategic way?
If it’s your CEO who lacks awareness on the value of HR, make sure you take some notes today – but if it’s you who’s treated to a business awakening, then I promise you’ll leave here with a much deeper understanding of how your skill set can be applied in a more strategic fashion.
When HR professionals speak up about “having a seat at the table”, how many do you think actually understand the way the business defines HR, and how HR can meet the needs of the business? Across all levels of an organisation, there’s a need for HR to have a presence. HR leaders therefore – in order to really be strategic and create effective talent management – need to understand the other business critical functions they want to be taken as seriously as.
The HR professional tasked with managing talent no doubt has a difficult job – particularly as Singapore goes through a number of regulatory workforce changes – but this is why all our speakers have volunteered their time and expertise to help you move forward. I truly hope Talent Management 2014 helps you answer a few questions and envisions a more strategic future for you and your career.
This means having an understanding of finance, compliance, operations and marketing, and how HR’s collaboration with these functions can help the business achieve its goals. It also means not coming up with various talent programmes, or succession programmes, and then simply waiting for things to happen. For your talent strategies to be successful and taken seriously, HR needs to provide a solid business case which clearly shows, in a qualitative format, how it will have an impact on these business critical functions. When you can provide this and show a ROI, then you’ll have the C-suite’s ears pricking up. If you’re in a position where you feel like you haven’t been given
