On behalf of the HRC Atlanta Steering Committee and our Dinner Committee, we are thrilled to welcome you to the 2023 HRC Atlanta Dinner and Auction. We are honored to be joined by such an incredible group of activists, advocates, and allies who are dedicated to fighting for LGBTQ+ rights. While tonight is about celebrating the achievements our community has made over the last year, we also recognize the alarming rise of anti-LGBTQ+ sentiment and legislation. In particular, the plethora of anti-trans legislation across the country that threaten the rights and dignity of our trans community members. We cannot let them go unchallenged.

That is why the theme of this year’s dinner is Unite the Fight. It is a call to action for all of us to come together to end discrimination against LGBTQ+ people and realize a world that achieves fundamental fairness and equality for all. Tonight, we celebrate the power of our community to effect change. Together, we can overcome any obstacle and create a more just and equitable world.

Thank you for joining us in this important work. Let’s unite the fight and continue pushing forward towards a brighter future.

With gratitude and solidarity,

Jon Ossoff

U.S. SENATOR SPECIAL GUEST

Born and raised in Georgia, Senator Jon Ossoff is Georgia’s Senior United States Senator. Since his election, Sen. Ossoff has delivered for communities across Georgia, successfully building bipartisan relationships in the Senate to achieve results — even in a divided Congress.

In his first two years in office, Sen. Ossoff passed into law more standalone bills than any other freshman Senator, to fund law enforcement and mental health services; tackle the opioid epidemic; investigate unsolved lynchings and Civil Rights murders; and strengthen security in U.S. prisons.

Sen. Ossoff remains focused on keeping Georgia families safe and healthy. He’s upgraded and strengthened health care facilities across the State, capped the cost of insulin for seniors at $35/ month, passed bipartisan legislation to protect our kids from online exploitation, delivered a new mobile mammography unit to help prevent and treat breast cancer, and more.

He’s also led multiple hard-hitting bipartisan investigations of crime and corruption, exposing the sexual assault and medical abuse of women in U.S. federal custody in pursuit of equal justice for all, and exposing the mistreatment of military families in privatized housing.

Sen. Ossoff has provided constituent service to thousands of Georgians — helping veterans secure the benefits they earned defending our country, seniors access Medicare and Social Security, small businesses access COVID relief, solving passport and visa delays, and more.

Mentored by civil rights legend Congressman John Lewis, Sen. Ossoff previously worked as a national security aide in Congress and as an investigative journalist, exposing ISIS war crimes, atrocities committed by peacekeeping troops, human trafficking, fraud, theft, corruption, and murder.

Sen. Ossoff lives with his wife, Dr. Alisha Kramer, and daughter, Eva Beth, in Atlanta.

Everybody.

At Apple, we’re committed to using our voice to advocate for LGBTQ+ people and the freedoms they deserve. Because we believe everybody should have the right to be free from discrimination.

We proudly support the Human Rights Campaign and stand with you to build a better future.

Rev. Raphael Warnock

U.S. SENATOR SPECIAL GUEST

Raised in Coastal Georgia, U.S. Senator Reverend Raphael Warnock grew up in Savannah’s Kayton Homes public housing and was born one of twelve brothers and sisters. His father—a veteran, small businessman, and preacher—grew up in Burke and Screven County, Georgia. Reverend Warnock’s mother grew up in Waycross, Georgia, where she spent summers picking tobacco and cotton. A graduate of Savannah’s Sol C. Johnson High School, Reverend Warnock’s mother and extended family still lives in the Savannah area.

Senator Reverend Warnock is a proud graduate of Morehouse College; after graduating from Morehouse, he went onto earn a PhD from New York’s Union Theological Seminary and begin his career ordained in the ministry. For nearly two decades, Reverend Warnock has served as Senior Pastor at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, the former pulpit of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. He is the youngest person selected to serve as the senior pastor of the historic church.

Senator Reverend Warnock was first elected to the United States Senate in the January 5, 2021, special election runoff to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of former Georgia U.S. Senator Johnny Isakson. Reverend Warnock took the oath of office on January 20, 2021, becoming Georgia’s first Black Senator, and only the 11th Black Senator in U.S. history. He was re-elected to a full term in the Senate in December 2022, and currently serves on the Senate Agriculture, Banking, and Commerce committees, as well as the Senate Aging Committee.

As a pastor and a moral voice in the U.S. Senate, Senator Reverend Warnock has been a proud ally of Georgia’s LGBTQ+ community. Reverend Warnock is a cosponsor of the Equality Act which would protect members of the LGBTQ+ community from housing, financial, and employment discrimination, and last fall he helped pass the Respect for Marriage Act, which enshrined marriage equality in the nation’s laws. Reverend Warnock has been a champion in the Senate for gender inclusive policies and resources to help at-risk LGBTQ+ youth who face higher risks of homelessness and other challenges. Additionally, a longtime civil rights advocate, in 2022 Reverend Warnock was joined by his fellow Georgia U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff in becoming the first sitting U.S. Senators from Georgia to participate in a Pride parade.

Greetings!

On behalf of the Atlanta City Council and the citizens of Atlanta, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the 35th Annual Atlanta Human Rights Campaign Gala Dinner & Silent Auction.

As the country’s largest civil rights organization working to achieve equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered Americans, HRC continues to play an integral role in improving the lives of LGBT people both nationally and locally.

I am a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community. I am especially proud to join three other openly LGBTQ+ members on Atlanta City Council this year. The city has made great progress toward equality over the past decade; however, our work is not yet complete.

My participation in HRC shows me firsthand the impact the organization and its supporters make every single day on the lives of all LGBT Americans. As we enjoy this wonderful evening and celebrate all that makes our community special, I strongly urge you to reaffirm your passion and commitment to HRC – whether by becoming a member for the first time, stepping up your financial support, or volunteering your time and skills in advocacy and service.

Please accept my warmest regards and best wishes as we share this special occasion together.

Sincerely,

Dear Members and Allies of the Human Rights Campaign,

On behalf of the great state of Georgia, I am delighted to extend a warm welcome to all of you as you gather in continued efforts to Unite the Fight in support of the fundamental rights and freedoms of LGBTQ+ Americans. Whether you are a Georgia native or visiting from out of town, we are honored to have you here in our state and to support your tireless work advancing equal justice for all.

As a United States Senator committed to championing all Georgians, I am proud to stand alongside the Human Rights Campaign and its Atlanta chapter in the ongoing fight for human rights and basic human dignity. Your unwavering dedication is inspiring, and your efforts have been instrumental in bringing about a more perfect union where folks are free to love who they love and live their personal truth.

Amidst a renewed wave of discrimination against our LGBTQ+ brothers and sisters, Unite the Fight is a timely theme for this year’s celebration. Now more than ever, we must come together as one people to combat bigotry, hatred, and discrimination wherever it exists. I share your passion for equality and echo the clarion call to speak up and speak out against those who seek to silence this community. And the Human Rights Campaign continues to play a fundamental role in bridging these divisions. Your advocacy, education, and outreach work are essential to our shared vision of a world where everyone is treated with respect, and where we are able to recognize the spark of the Divine that exists within each of us.

Thank you for all you do. Keep the faith and keep looking up.

Sincerely,

Attention: 35th Annual Atlanta Dinner Attendees

1640 Rhode Island Ave NW Washington, DC 20036

Dear Friends and Supporters of the Human Rights Campaign,

I am honored to welcome attendees of the 35th Annual Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Atlanta Dinner. As one of Doraville's three openly LGBTQ elected officials, I proudly support HRC's advocacy for LGBTQ rights and the pursuit of an inclusive, equitable society.

This year's theme, "Unite The Fight," captures the essence of HRC's mission: rallying diverse voices to drive change. While we have made strides, the journey continues. The LGBTQ community, especially transgender youth, face significant challenges and threats. Now more than ever, we must unite to ensure a world free from discrimination and prejudice and stand up for our most vulnerable community members.

I commend the Human Rights Campaign for its dedication to LGBTQ rights and raising awareness of ongoing issues. The HRC Atlanta Dinner demonstrates the power of unity and collaboration against adversity, and I'm confident the funds raised will further the fight for equality and justice.

I wish you a successful and inspiring event. Let's continue to "Unite The Fight" and work towards a brighter, more inclusive future for all.

I am pleased to welcome attendees to the 34th Annual Human Rights Campaign Atlanta Dinner & Auction. It is my great pleasure to join each of you this evening as we celebrate our progress toward representation and equality here in Atlanta and beyond. I am deeply grateful for each of your support of the Human Rights Campaign, and your continued commitment to the LGBTQIA+ community.

As the first out, non-binary, queer Muslim elected official in the State of Georgia, I know about the hard work and persistence it takes to push boundaries and shatter ceilings as we fight for a brighter and more inclusive future here in the South. I am honored to join the Human Rights Campaign, and my three fellow LGBTQIA+ colleagues on the Atlanta City Council, in recognizing the trailblazers and advocates who continue to push for progress toward LGBTQIA+ equality.

As we celebrate tonight, I invite you to reflect on those who came before us, paving the way for a more equitable and just world for LGBTQIA+ people; but beyond that, I encourage you to acknowledge all of the work left to be done. We have come so far, but we have plenty left ahead.

Thank you to the Human Rights Campaign and their leadership, and to each of you for all of your contributions to the LGBTQIA+ community. Onward, together.

Dear Friends,

Welcome to the 35th HRC Atlanta Dinner & Auction!

It is wonderful to be together this evening to celebrate the progress made by this terrific organization and recommit ourselves to the work still ahead.

As a former teacher and school board member here in Atlanta, I am incredibly grateful for HRC ’s efforts to support and protect our kids especially those who have come under increased attack this year by lawmakers here in Georgia and across the country . These last few months have been a vivid reminder of our collective responsibility to build a society where our young people can love themselves for who they are without denying their identities or questioning their self-worth.

As a native Atlantan, I was incredibly proud to be one of the four openly LGTBQ people sworn into Atlanta’s City Council last year. And I am excited to continue working alongside Mayor Andre Dickens and all my Council colleagues to build on the great work done over the last five years by the City’s Division of LGTBQ Affairs and its director Malik Brown.

My sincere thanks and appreciation to each of you who work every day to h elp build an equitable, inclusive, and diverse Atlanta for all who call this incredible city home.

Please reach out if I can ever help from City Hall.

To the attendees of the Human Rights Campaign Atlanta Dinner, Welcome to Georgia’s Fifth Congressional District! I wish I could be there in person with you, but I am in Washington D.C. fighting for human rights and equity for all.

As the Congressman representing the LGBTQI+ Capital of the South, I work diligently to make legislative advancements on behalf of all people in Georgia’s Fifth Congressional District. In the 117th Congress I introduced a resolution condemning the criminalization of parental choice in pregnancy outcomes and condemning the criminalization of gender affirming care. I also introduced the PRIDE Act to require federal banking and finance agencies to expand their existing Offices of Minority and Women Inclusion to include individuals who are LGBTQI+. I added a report requirement to the Global Respect Act to protect LGBTQI+ people abroad and co-sponsored the Equality Act and the Respect for Marriage Act. This session, I voted against the trans sports ban and submitted an amendment to support women and gender minorities in sports. I also submitted an amendment to study the emotional and educational impact of discriminatory bans on children’s mental health.

As you all enjoy today’s dinner and conversation, I will continue to work diligently to ensure that Georgia’s Fifth Congressional District continues to extend human rights and create a better society for everyone, no matter who they love, or how they identify.

Welcome to the 35th Human Rights Campaign Atlanta Dinner and Auction!

It is my honor and privilege to welcome you to the 35th Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Atlanta Dinner and Auction! HRC's Annual Dinner is a celebration of the great strides we have made in fighting for human rights and the equality of all, and a reminder of the work that remains to be done to live up to the promise of America.

As the first openly gay man elected to the Georgia State Legislature, I was provided the opportunity to serve because of women and people of color who broke barriers for me and countless others. Leaders in Georgia like Cathy Woolard, Karla Drenner, Simone Bell, Park Cannon, Alex Wan, Stephe Kootnz, Imani Barnes, and Jeff Graham broke barriers and are continuing the hard work of paving the way for the next generation of LGBTQ leaders. In partnership with organizations like HRC and supporters like you, we have the power to ensure all members of our LGBTQ family have the freedom to thrive and are treated with equal dignity and respect.

Together, we have made progress in the State of Georgia – the cradle of the civil rights movement. In 2004, the Georgia State Constitution was amended to prohibit same-sex marriage. Ten years later, same-sex marriage became the law of the land. Along with recognizing and reaffirming the equal dignity of LGBTQ Americans, we fought and we won the constitutional right to marry the person we love.

As a member of one of the largest LGBTQ Legislative Caucuses in the South, we will continue to fight for our rights and overcome the challenges we face to make progress for our community by building and strengthening our diverse coalition So tonight, let us celebrate the progress we have made and stand firm in our commitment to human rights and equality. Tomorrow, let us stand united in common purpose and get back to the hard work of continuing the march toward freedom, equality, and justice for all.

Transgender and non-binary people are your neighbors, co-workers, family members and friends. And when you or your friends and family are the targets of hate, violence and discrimination, you act.

The Human Rights Campaign is actively working to advocate for the rights and lives of the transgender and non-binary community–but we all must do more–can we count you in?

As LGBTQ+ people and allies, we have a responsibility to fight for EVERYONE in our movement. Now is the time to get loud, get visible, and spread awareness on behalf of transgender and non-binary people. So please take the actions below–but don’t stop there.

Sign the Pledge and Impact Change

The first step in voicing your support for the trans and non-binary community is to sign your name to the Count Me In pledge. By taking this action, you’re sending a message that you vow to go out of your way to raise awareness and uplift the lives of our trans and non-binary friends and family.

Provide Inclusive Books to an At-Need Library

Your contribution will provide a set of three books to a Title 1 school or community library serving multiply marginalized populations across the country.

Contact State Legislators

State legislatures are attacking LGBTQ+ folks, particularly trans people, left and right. Show antiequality legislators that we won’t tolerate any more bullying and discrimination.

Request and Show Off Your Sticker

Display your special edition HRC sticker on your car, laptop, water bottle — no matter where you put it, you’ll be saying you support our trans community.

Spread the Word On Social Media

Post these image shares on your social media channels and update your profile photos and let your networks know you believe in a more just and equitable world for trans folks — full stop.

Share a Voice Message of Support

State legislatures are targeting trans kids. Text HEART to 472-472 to share a public message of support for trans youth and show you’re fighting for them.

(Msg&dataratesmayapply. Recurring msgs. TxtSTOP2quit. HELP4info.)

Let Kids Play

Rebekah is a 14-year-old girl who loves school, reading, hanging out with her friends and playing field hockey. But lawmakers across the country are trying to pass laws that would prohibit Rebekah from playing sports with other girls.

Wear Your Support

From T-shirts to pins to socks to masks, you can show off your support for trans equality no matter where you are, who you’re with or what you’re doing.

The more people who show they care, including allies and trans and non-binary people who speak up for the most marginalized in our community, the more hearts and minds we will change. Can we count you in?

WHAT WE DO

The Human Rights Campaign is America’s largest civil rights organization working for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer equality. Since 1980, we have been fighting for a better future for LGBTQ+ Americans. We are now working tirelessly to pass the Equality Act, which will soon head to the U.S. Senate for consideration, fight back against a multitude of anti-LGBTQ+ legis-lation in states nationwide and ensure everyone in our community is treated with dignity and respect. While our opponents are emboldened and on the attack, the Human Rights Campaign and our grass-roots army of more than 3.2 million members and supporters are energetically defending the rights we’ve gained and ramping up our fight for full equality across the board.

ANTI-EQUALITY LEADERS AND LEGISLATION

The alarming spate of anti-LGBTQ+ bills introduced across the country in 2020 has continued to surge in 2021. These include bills that would prohibit transgender youth from receiving genderaffirming care and bills that would prohibit transgender youth from participating in sports. This wave of anti-transgender legislation harkens back to the surge of anti-transgender bathroom bills that hit state legislatures in 2016, including North Carolina’s HB2. We remain committed to aggressively fighting these threats to equality by those who seek to undermine our rights. HRC will do whatever it takes to protect the rights and fundamental equality of every LGBTQ+ person in this country.

BU ILDING A ND DEMONSTR AT ING POLITICAL P OWER

HRC’s decades-long work to build political power has uniquely positioned us to reach LGBTQ+ and ally voters who prioritize equality on the ballot, also known as Equality Voters. HRC has identified 57 million Equality Voters nationwide who, if they turn out to vote, will support pro-equality candidates. HRC’s early and sustained year-round engagement in battleground states like Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin bolstered historic turnout in 2018 and 2020 producing pro-equality outcomes at every level of government. In 2019, HRC’s mobilization of Equality Voters in Virginia, where lawmakers had repeatedly blocked proequality bills over many years, produced groundbreaking progress for LGBTQ+ Americans in the South. These victories led to the Virginia Values Act becoming law, making Virginia the first state in the South to advance statewide nondiscrimination protections for LGBTQ+ people.

ADVANCING EQUALITY IN OUR DAILY LIVES

The HRC Foundation improves the lives LGBTQ+ people by building understanding and shaping the public debate of LGBTQ+ people and the challenges they face through innovative research and public education campaigns. We also change the policies and practices in the institutions that shape our everyday lives (hospitals, schools, workplaces, and more) and empower strategic partners, community advocates, and allies through convenings and capacity-building. Guided by these theories of change and seeking to prioritize work impacting those who are multiply marginalized, we have 11 cuttingedge programs advancing equality in the U.S. and beyond.

All Children - All Families is the only national program dedicated to LGBTQ+ inclusion in child welfare (foster care and adoption agencies) that provides resource development, technical assistance and training.

Public Education & Research produces written resources and conducts original quantitative and qualitative research exploring the lived experiences of LGBTQ+ people.

Global Partnerships provides capacity-building and leadership development opportunities to LGBTQ+ advocates from around the world to strengthen movements and advance global LGBTQ+ equality.

HBCU Program is the only national project that partners with Historically Black Colleges and Universities on establishing an LGBTQ+-inclusive campus climate.

Health & Aging provides resources and training to help thousands of healthcare facilities adopt inclusive policies and practices to better serve LGBTQ+ patients and employees.

HIV & Health Equity develops public education and capacitybuilding programs to address the disproportionate impact of HIV on Black and Latinx communities.

Religion & Faith provides faith leaders with opportunities and tools to stand up for equality even as opponents attempt to weaponize faith against LGBTQ+ people.

Transgender Justice Initiative leads economic empowerment programs, capacity-building initiatives, community engagement efforts, and public safety education campaigns that combat the discrimination faced by transgender people.

Welcoming Schools is the only bias-based bullying prevention program in the nation to provide LGBTQ+-specific training and resources with an intersectional lens, developed for use in elementary schools.

Workplace Equality advances equality for LGBTQ+ workers through the adoption and implementation of inclusive policies, practices, and benefits in the U.S. and beyond.

Youth Well-Being provides professional development to over 5,000 youth-serving professionals annually, through the annual Time to THRIVE conference, webinars, participation at major national convenings, and by amplifying the stories of HRC Youth Ambassadors. The program also convenes HRC’s Parents for Transgender Equality Council.
