Welcome

Dinner Committee Dabney

There are many ways you can help by volunteering, joining our Federal Club, and voting for pro-equality politicians. We remain grateful to all of you who are doing this work now. We know our work is not done, and if history serves as an indicator, we are assured that we can depend on you to be by our side in the fight. We’d like to thank all of you for your contributions to helping us get this far. Additionally, we want to take a moment to thank all members of the Dinner Committee. This night would not be possible without the work and dedication of the entire committee. Tonight, we celebrate and dedicate this event to you with Love. Dabney and Jim Cleveland Dinner Co-Chairs Conwell, Dinner Co Chair Cowart, Dinner Co Chair Book

the last 29 years, each of you have stood beside us in our celebrations, our defeats and responded to our calls for action. These acts of allyship do not go unnoticed. As you know, our work is far from done. In Ohio, we continue to mobilize to elect pro-equality candidates. Our charge to those candidates is to defeat the Anti-LGBT+ bills that have been introduced at the state level. HRC remains hard at work pushing to pass The Equality Act, an essential piece of legislation that establishes explicit, permanent protections against discrimination based on an individual’s sexual orientation or gender identity. Additionally, it prohibits discrimination based on sex in federal funding and access to public places. An overwhelming majority of Americans support non-discrimination protections, too many of us are at the mercy of our local legislatures. The time to pass the Equality Act is NOW!

Deirdre and Kevin were both instrumental, working in Mayor Frank Jackson’s administration, to help the city of Cleveland achieve a 100% rating in the Municipality Equality Index with the Human Rights Campaign. Cleveland has held this status for 5+ years, largely due to their efforts. To achieve this rating, improving it from 88% to 100%, the city was required to implement gender-neutral bathrooms at its government facilities and it needed to have leadership be willing to volunteer to lead LGBT areas of government.

DEIRDRE JONES AND KEVIN SCHMOTZER

Part of the requirement of achieving 100% on the HRC Municipality Equality Index is having a staff member of the city as the LGBTQ liaison and having a member of the police force also serve as an LGBTQ liaison. Dierdre and Kevin each generously offered to serve in those positions for the past 5 years.

This Choice Award is given to an individual or organization that embodies the passion and dedication to advancing LGBTQ equality that is central to HRC’s mission. Often such person or persons work tirelessly in the background to help the Community to achieve equality.

Kevin is the Executive of Small Business Development with the City of Cleveland’s Department of Economic Development, and he worked behind the scenes to ensure that executive small business representation was achieved at LGBT levels to help the city achieve this 100% rating. Additionally, he served on the Board of the Gay Games, was actively involved with bringing the Gay Games to Cleveland in 2014 (GG9), helped to form Pride in the CLE after Pride was cancelled in 2016, and he has been an active, openly LGBT-owned business owner with his spouse for 20+ years.

Deidre is now Chief of Police and Director of Security at Greater Cleveland Transit Police. As she did in her Commander role with the City of Cleveland Police Department, she has been a leader in a DEI capacity including having a presence in Pride in the CLE with her staff.

Welcoming Schools is the only bias-based bullying prevention program in the nation to provide LGBTQ+-specific training and resources with an intersectional lens, developed for use in elementary schools.

HRC’s decades-long work to build political power has uniquely positioned us to reach LGBTQ+ and ally voters who prioritize equality on the ballot, also known as Equality Voters. HRC has identified 57 million Equality Voters nationwide who, if they turn out to vote, will support pro-equality candidates. HRC’s early and sustained year-round engagement in battleground states like Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin bolstered historic turnout in 2018 and 2020 producing pro-equality outcomes at every level of government. In 2019, HRC’s mobilization of Equality Voters in Virginia, where lawmakers had repeatedly blocked proequality bills over many years, produced groundbreaking progress for LGBTQ+ Americans in the South. These victories led to the Virginia Values Act becoming law, making Virginia the first state in the South to advance statewide nondiscrimination protections for LGBTQ+ people.

ANTI-EQUALITY LEADERS AND LEGISLATION

The alarming spate of anti-LGBTQ+ bills introduced across the country in 2020 has continued to surge in 2021. These include bills that would prohibit transgender youth from receiving genderaffirming care and bills that would prohibit transgender youth from participating in sports. This wave of anti-transgender legislation harkens back to the surge of anti-transgender bathroom bills that hit state legislatures in 2016, including North Carolina’s HB2. We remain committed to aggressively fighting these threats to equality by those who seek to undermine our rights. HRC will do whatever it takes to protect the rights and fundamental equality of every LGBTQ+ person in this country. BU ILDING A ND DEMONSTR AT ING POLITICAL P OWER

The HRC Foundation improves the lives LGBTQ+ people by building understanding and shaping the public debate of LGBTQ+ people and the challenges they face through innovative research and public education campaigns. We also change the policies and practices in the institutions that shape our everyday lives (hospitals, schools, workplaces, and more) and empower strategic partners, community advocates, and allies through convenings and capacity-building. Guided by these theories of change and seeking to prioritize work impacting those who are multiply marginalized, we have 11 cuttingedge programs advancing equality in the U.S. and beyond.

All Children - All Families is the only national program dedicated to LGBTQ+ inclusion in child welfare (foster care and adoption agencies) that provides resource development, technical assistance and training.

WHAT WE DO

Workplace Equality advances equality for LGBTQ+ workers through the adoption and implementation of inclusive policies, practices, and benefits in the U.S. and beyond.

The Human Rights Campaign is America’s largest civil rights organization working for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer equality. Since 1980, we have been fighting for a better future for LGBTQ+ Americans. We are now working tirelessly to pass the Equality Act, which will soon head to the U.S. Senate for consideration, fight back against a multitude of anti-LGBTQ+ legis-lation in states nationwide and ensure everyone in our community is treated with dignity and respect. While our opponents are emboldened and on the attack, the Human Rights Campaign and our grass-roots army of more than 3.2 million members and supporters are energetically defending the rights we’ve gained and ramping up our fight for full equality across the board.

Religion & Faith provides faith leaders with opportunities and tools to stand up for equality even as opponents attempt to weaponize faith against LGBTQ+ people.

HBCU Program is the only national project that partners with Historically Black Colleges and Universities on establishing an LGBTQ+-inclusive campus climate.

Transgender Justice Initiative leads economic empowerment programs, capacity-building initiatives, community engagement efforts, and public safety education campaigns that combat the discrimination faced by transgender people.

Public Education & Research produces written resources and conducts original quantitative and qualitative research exploring the lived experiences of LGBTQ+ people.

Youth Well-Being provides professional development to over 5,000 youth-serving professionals annually, through the annual Time to THRIVE conference, webinars, participation at major national convenings, and by amplifying the stories of HRC Youth Ambassadors. The program also convenes HRC’s Parents for Transgender Equality Council.
