NATIONALHRC PARTNERSCORPORATE *Updated

We come together to celebrate and honor all those who fight so hard for equality across the state, country, and globe. While tonight’s dinner is an important part of the work, it doesn’t stop here. This is a chance for us to reflect on and re-energize our efforts. Tonight we challenge each other to both financially support HRC’s mission and to keep reaching across our tables and forging connections with humility, curiosity and respect. In the words of Helen Keller, “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.”

This evening would not be a success without the support of the LGBTQ+ community, but also those among you that identify as our allies - we see you, we appreciate you and with your persistent advocacy, you are helping us make strides in the fight for equality. We also express our sincerest gratitude to the HRC Minnesota Steering Committee, our corporate sponsors, table captains and team of dedicated volunteers. Months of planning and hard work have gone into this evening - without your energy, excitement, creativity and commitment none of this would have been possible. We are finally “Together Again”! Let’s see what we can do!

Welcome

While many of us who identify as LGBTQ+ can now live more freely and have attained prosperity unthinkable to previous generations, we know how much work still remains. To unleash our full potential we must pursue equality for all, especially those most marginalized within our community. At the local level we are renewing and forming partnerships with LGBTQ+ organizations that provide targeted support for those of BIPOC, transgender and youth identity. We’re honored to have several of these organizations present with us tonight.

Welcome to the 2022 HRC Minnesota Dinner!

Welcome to the 2022 Human Rights Campaign Minnesota Dinner! On behalf of the Minnesota Board of Governors and Steering Committee, we welcome you to a night of celebration and renewed vigor in the fight for LGBTQ+ equality.

United in the belief that Love Wins,

This is the first time we’ve gathered together since the beginning of the ongoing COVID pandemic and other critical events. The murder of George Floyd put Minnesota in the global spotlight and has forced a long-overdue confrontation with the legacy of racism that persists in our institutions, communities and selves. The January 6th insurrection in DC exposed the fraying of our democratic institutions. The Supreme Court’s overturning Roe vs. Wade upended a half century precedent for federal reproductive healthcare protection. State legislatures around the country have been introducing a record number of anti-Trans and anti-LGBTQ+ bills and passing them at alarming rates. Overcoming these interrelated assaults on our rights requires unprecedented and creative solutions.

Monica Meyer has dedicated her life to advocating for LGBTQ+ people and working for equity and justice in Minnesota and beyond. In 2001 she joined OutFront Minnesota, an organization on the frontlines of queer and trans equity that passed the nation’s first statewide trans-inclusive nondiscrimination law in 1993. As OutFront’s Public Policy Director, Monica oversaw statewide political strategy and organizing while LGBTQ+ people faced vicious attacks at the State Capitol and throughout the state and country. At the same time, Monica worked to advance inclusive policies at corporations and organizations across the state of Minnesota—policies like some of the first domestic partner and healthcare benefits for Fortune 500 companies. Her favorite part of the work was working with courageous people across the state to build a powerful network of people working together to show up and fight for love.

In the middle of the Great Recession, Monica was tapped as the next Executive Director of OutFront and while steering through that economic crisis the fight for marriage equality in Minnesota was coming over the horizon. In 2011, with Monica at the helm, OutFront, HRC, Project 515 and other organizations formed the coalition known as Minnesotans United for All Families, to fight back against the hateful constitutional amendment banning same-sex couples from the freedom to marry. Through deep, relational organizing and thousands of heartfelt conversations, Minnesotans rejected the discriminatory amendment in 2012—becoming the only state to defeat such hate at the ballot box that year. The following year, Monica helped lead the legislative fight to win marriage equality for same sex couples in Minnesota two years before marriage equality was legalized nationwide.

BRIAN COYLE HONOREE Monica Meyer

It is this leadership and commitment to justice and equality that made OutFront Minnesota one of the leading voices on intersectional LGBTQ+ justice in the country throughout Monica’s 20 year tenure. From passing one of the country’s strongest anti-bullying laws and securing trans inclusion in sports to fighting to ban conversion therapy and expand democracy by helping elect pro-equality candidates up and down the ballot, Minnesota is a better place for LGBTQ+ people thanks to the tireless efforts of Monica Meyer and her work with the thousands of people involved in OutFront Minnesota, HRC, the Equality Federation, Gender Justice and so many other groups. We are honored to celebrate her this year with the Brian Coyle Award and wish her all of the best in her next chapter after OutFront and with her newly expanded family!

Along life’s journey, let’s travel together. American

Shea—who was born in Little Rock, Arkansas before moving to Memphis and then Flint, Michigan as a child— says that “as early as I can remember, I always identified as being a girl. It was hard work to pretend to be a gender that you’re not. I should have gotten an Oscar, really. I had so much pressure on me as child to be masculine. Even when I was the choir director for our church, my mother would still whisper in my ear that I was singing too high. Growing up trans takes a lot of guts.”

On Seen It All, Shea bravely tells her truth to a world that hasn’t always wanted to really see her. “I’m the flame that you can’t un-see,” she announces with unapologetic honesty on the haunting opener “American Pie.”

“The struggle looks different for different people. But this music is for everyone.” So testifies Shea Diamond, who, with a gritty mix of sounds that digs into everything from R&B, rock and hiphop to blues, folk and gospel, makes music that speaks to the universal experience while sharing from her very personal one.

Shea (pronounced she-uh) has always had to fight to live her truth. Indeed, she has fought to live her very she-ness. As a black transgender woman, that’s just what she does every time she walks out into the world-representing herself and amplifying the voices and experiences of her community. But now after all of her struggle, this game-changing new singer-songwriter is living her dream with Seen It All, her soulful and soulbaring debut EP (Asylum Records) that was executive-produced by hit songwriter Justin Tranter.

After being released in November 2009, Shea moved to New York City and was introduced to the trans activism world. It was her a cappella performance of “I Am Her” at a Black Trans Lives Matter event that caught the attention of Justin Tranter, the former leader singer of Semi Precious Weapons who is now a sought-after songwriter for artists like Selena Gomez, Justin Bieber and Gwen Stefani.

Shea was unable to cope with the pressures at home and ran away at 14. Entering the foster care system as a ward of the state, she eventually became emancipated at 17. Then in 1999, desperate to get money for sex reassignment surgery, she committed armed robbery and consequently served about 10 years in the men’s prison system, getting shuffled around “because I was too feminine.” During her incarceration, though, she found her voice as an artist, singing and writing songs like “I Am Her.” Shea’s fellow inmates even became fans: “The guys used to be singing ‘I Am Her.’”

Shea immediately impressed Tranter with her talent. “Not only does this woman have a very beautiful, powerful story to tell, she can back it up as a musician. Vocally, her tone is magical; it’s so rich and so beautiful. Every time she opens her mouth to sing, you believe every word. And in terms of songwriting, she’s a real storyteller.”

The guitar-greased centerpiece of Seen It All is “I Am Her,” an empowering trans anthem on which Shea defiantly belts, “Never asked for no one’s philosophy/It’s obvious I’m proud of me.” “It is a compilation of my life experiences,” she explains. “It speaks on the rejection from religion, the rejection from family, and having to be all right by yourself, you know what I mean? After the world has shunned you and said, ‘Look, we don’t want you,’ you have to want yourself. I contemplated suicide several times as a youth because nobody wanted me.”

the end of his final term as Governor in 2019 when, due to multiple changes within the steering committee, he was asked if he would do one extra year. Always selfless with his time and energy, Tal agreed to stay on so new members could gain from his experience and wisdom. Then, 2020 rolled around. The turmoil felt everywhere due to the pandemic certainly impacted HRC and our volunteer structure. Tal agreed to stay on one more year, and then another. We began to refer to him as the “Fairy Godmother” of the Steering Committee - someone we could all turn to for experience, direction and sometimes a magic touch.

Tal will - finally - be stepping down from his role as Governor later this year, but his impact will continue to be felt for years to come. Thank you, Tal, and even though you will no longer be a governor, we look forward to continuing to learn from you.

“Tal’s commitment to HRC and the advancement of equality for ALL is unprecedented. He is a servant leader who is always there to lend a hand, offer insights and above all he cares deeply about the team. It’s been an honor to serve with my dear friend Tal.” ~ Alicia

ANTI-EQUALITY LEADERS AND LEGISLATION

BU ILDING A ND DEMONSTR AT ING POLITICAL P OWER

Updated 10-26-2021

HRC’s decades-long work to build political power has uniquely positioned us to reach LGBTQ+ and ally voters who prioritize equality on the ballot, also known as Equality Voters. HRC has identified 57 million Equality Voters nationwide who, if they turn out to vote, will support pro-equality candidates. HRC’s early and sustained year-round engagement in battleground states like Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin bolstered historic turnout in 2018 and 2020 producing pro-equality outcomes at every level of government. In 2019, HRC’s mobilization of Equality Voters in Virginia, where lawmakers had repeatedly blocked proequality bills over many years, produced groundbreaking progress for LGBTQ+ Americans in the South. These victories led to the Virginia Values Act becoming law, making Virginia the first state in the South to advance statewide nondiscrimination protections for LGBTQ+ people.

The Human Rights Campaign is America’s largest civil rights organization working for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer equality. Since 1980, we have been fighting for a better future for LGBTQ+ Americans. We are now working tirelessly to pass the Equality Act, which will soon head to the U.S. Senate for consideration, fight back against a multitude of anti-LGBTQ+ legis-lation in states nationwide and ensure everyone in our community is treated with dignity and respect. While our opponents are emboldened and on the attack, the Human Rights Campaign and our grass-roots army of more than 3.2 million members and supporters are energetically defending the rights we’ve gained and ramping up our fight for full equality across the board.

The alarming spate of anti-LGBTQ+ bills introduced across the country in 2020 has continued to surge in 2021. These include bills that would prohibit transgender youth from receiving genderaffirming care and bills that would prohibit transgender youth from participating in sports. This wave of anti-transgender legislation harkens back to the surge of anti-transgender bathroom bills that hit state legislatures in 2016, including North Carolina’s HB2. We remain committed to aggressively fighting these threats to equality by those who seek to undermine our rights. HRC will do whatever it takes to protect the rights and fundamental equality of every LGBTQ+ person in this country.

At Alaska, we are longtime supporters of the communityLGBTQ+andremaincommittedtoamoreequitablesociety.

We all have ambitions. And working together, valuing each other and respecting our uniqueness creates the best environment for us to achieve them.

Our ambition is bold, to help the world get to net zero by 2050 or sooner. That’s why we value diversity and put being inclusive at the heart of how we operate. It’s also why we’re recognized as a top employer by the Human Rights Campaign’s Corporate Equality Index.

More safe spaces More belonging

The safe spaces LGBTQIA+ people rely on are needed more than ever. While great strides have been made, we must continue connecting LGBTQIA+ people to the communities that celebrate who they are.
