Over the past two years, we’ve seen an egregious increase in anti-LGBTQ+ legislation across the United States, including over three hundred bills in Texas directed at harming our community. Today, there are still twenty-nine states lacking non-discriminatory policies to protect LGBTQ+ people in the areas of health, employment, credit, and housing. Even more alarming, hate crimes and the murdering of transgender people, especially people of color, are exponentially higher today than at any other point in our history.
Welcome to the 2022 HRC San Antonio Dinner and Auction!
Welcome
In Adriannasolidarity,Addicks,
As we know, elections matter, and when we vote, we win. So that means HRC will be mobilizing and calling to action every pro-equality voter to make their voice heard in the upcoming midterm elections. To defend our progress, we must elect pro-equality leaders to ensure our civil rights and democracy is protected. Leaders who will take a stand to advance pro-equality legislation. We believe the future of our nation is only as strong as the future that each and every person can — and should — be able to achieve. As long as white supremacy and systemic bigotry corrupts our institutions, as long as bright futures are cut short by hateful violence, as long as families are forced to live in fear, we will not see the promise of liberation fulfilled. We must recommit ourselves to realizing that promise of liberation and we know each of you will be in lockstep with us to ensure equality wins at the ballot box, in courtrooms, and in our communities. We stand united, knowing that we cannot take one step back and tonight is part of building our momentum to keep us moving forward. As we champion this important work, we are incredibly grateful to our HRC San Antonio family, friends, members, supporters, and volunteers for your unwavering commitment. The strength of our work which supports our mission of achieving full equality for LGBTQ+ people is made possible because of you. After all, WE ARE HRC.
Across the nation, anti-equality lawmakers are continuing an all-out assault on the lives of LGBTQ+ young people, particularly our trans and non-binary youth. Right now, our HRC family and our coalition partners are using every resource in our toolbox to defeat these laws — including taking anti-LGBTQ politicians to court.
After two long years, we finally come together to celebrate and honor the courageous work being led across our country to propel our movement for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer equality. While tonight’s dinner is an important part of the work, it doesn’t stop here.

Prior to her work at the Esperanza, Graciela worked with Southwest Voter Registration Education Project and the Mexican American Legal Defense Fund. Her concerns regarding the United States’ involvement in a covert war in Central America took her to Nicaragua, where she made her first video, Testimonios de Nicaragua . She was then selected to study film and video at the internationally recognized Escuela Internacional de Cine y Television in San Antonio de los Baños, Cuba. At the film school, she produced several videos most notably, Esperanza , based on Sandra Cisneros’ book, House on Mango Street , and No Porque Lo Diga Fidel Castro (1988), the first documentary on gay life in Cuba made in Cuba.
GRACIELA
LegacyAward
In 1988, Sánchez returned to San Antonio to become Director of the Esperanza and has served in that position ever since. Under her bold leadership, the Esperanza has challenged, organized, and irrevocably changed the political character of San Antonio. Her leadership has placed the cultures and arts of historically excluded communities at the center of the cultural-political life of this city, offering powerful, risky cultural and arts programming through exhibitions, film festivals, educational forums, arts collectives, and performances. The Esperanza has organized against homophobia in San Antonio and South Texas presenting the first AIDS art exhibit and the first LGBT art exhibit in Texas in 1989. Esperanza has also organized against U.S. aggression in the Middle East, for the rights of women workers, for immigrants and communities of color, against environmental racism and cultural imperialism. Sánchez and the Esperanza have paid a heavy price for their work. In 1993, the Esperanza was evicted from its first location because of its advocacy for the rights of women and queers, work that challenged traditional social justice organizations. Sánchez and the Esperanza re-grouped, organized, raised funds, and bought a building, their current home at 922 San Pedro Avenue.
Graciela I. Sánchez, a buena gente of the Esperanza Peace and Justice Center is a native of the Westside of San Antonio. Graciela follows in the footsteps of her abuelitas and mother, neighborhood activists in San Antonio’s Westside. A dedicated activist/cultural worker, Graciela has worked throughout her lifetime to eliminate racism, sexism, queerphobia and class elitism. Graciela began that journey while attending San Antonio’s segregated inner city public schools where she began organizing students to challenge regressive school board policies, which favored wealthier schools over the poorer predominantly Chicano inner city schools.
Following a “campaign for cultural diversity,” that challenged the lack of diversity in the staffs and programming of the European-centered cultural organizations that receive most of the City’s arts funding, Sánchez and the Esperanza were targeted by City officials as “troublemakers.” Soon thereafter, a right-wing radio talk-show host began to attack the Esperanza as “socialist baby-killers” because of its work on women’s reproductive rights and a group of conservative, politically connected gay white men attacked the Esperanza in the local gay newspaper as promoting “obscene” art and anti-white programming. In 1997, the unlikely coalition of business-oriented city officials, right-wing activists, and conservative white gay men worked together to deny all local public funding to the Esperanza. The Mayor justified this decision by saying that the Esperanza’s political vision disqualifies it from being an “arts agency.”

ANTI-EQUALITY LEADERS AND LEGISLATION
The alarming spate of anti-LGBTQ+ bills introduced across the country in 2020 has continued to surge in 2021. These include bills that would prohibit transgender youth from receiving genderaffirming care and bills that would prohibit transgender youth from participating in sports. This wave of anti-transgender legislation harkens back to the surge of anti-transgender bathroom bills that hit state legislatures in 2016, including North Carolina’s HB2. We remain committed to aggressively fighting these threats to equality by those who seek to undermine our rights. HRC will do whatever it takes to protect the rights and fundamental equality of every LGBTQ+ person in this country.
Welcoming Schools is the only bias-based bullying prevention program in the nation to provide LGBTQ+-specific training and resources with an intersectional lens, developed for use in elementary schools.
Health & Aging provides resources and training to help thousands of healthcare facilities adopt inclusive policies and practices to better serve LGBTQ+ patients and employees.
BU ILDING A ND DEMONSTR AT ING POLITICAL P OWER
The HRC Foundation improves the lives LGBTQ+ people by building understanding and shaping the public debate of LGBTQ+ people and the challenges they face through innovative research and public education campaigns. We also change the policies and practices in the institutions that shape our everyday lives (hospitals, schools, workplaces, and more) and empower strategic partners, community advocates, and allies through convenings and capacity-building. Guided by these theories of change and seeking to prioritize work impacting those who are multiply marginalized, we have 11 cuttingedge programs advancing equality in the U.S. and beyond.
Global Partnerships provides capacity-building and leadership development opportunities to LGBTQ+ advocates from around the world to strengthen movements and advance global LGBTQ+ equality.
HRC’s decades-long work to build political power has uniquely positioned us to reach LGBTQ+ and ally voters who prioritize equality on the ballot, also known as Equality Voters. HRC has identified 57 million Equality Voters nationwide who, if they turn out to vote, will support pro-equality candidates. HRC’s early and sustained year-round engagement in battleground states like Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin bolstered historic turnout in 2018 and 2020 producing pro-equality outcomes at every level of government. In 2019, HRC’s mobilization of Equality Voters in Virginia, where lawmakers had repeatedly blocked proequality bills over many years, produced groundbreaking progress for LGBTQ+ Americans in the South. These victories led to the Virginia Values Act becoming law, making Virginia the first state in the South to advance statewide nondiscrimination protections for LGBTQ+ people.
