Welcome to the 2023 HRC San Antonio Dinner and Auction!

We are thrilled you’ve joined us to celebrate and honor the courageous work being done across our country and state to propel our movement for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer equality. Your presence shows your commitment to fight for equality and justice, by renewing and recharging our personal activism.

The 2023 Legislative Session was an opportunity for lawmakers to address critical issues such as fixing the electrical grid, property tax relief, and addressing the state wide teacher shortage to name a few of the multitude of pressing issues Texans face. Instead, the legislature focused on passing a record-setting amount of anti-LGBTQ+ bills. 16 anti-LGBTQ+ bills passed at least one chamber and 5 became law: a gender affirming care ban for trans youth, an expansion of an existing K-12 trans sports ban to public colleges and universities, a ban on diversity equity and inclusion offices in public universities, a bill to allow unlicensed chaplains to serve as counselors in public schools, and a preemption bill that threatens local non-discrimination ordinances. Loud and explicit antiLGBTQ+ animus led to an exponential increase in law enforcement presence at the Capitol and a day of aggressive action against our community. By the end of the session, several of the Governor’s priorities remained unaddressed prompting the Governor to call a special session (likely the first of several this year) immediately after the legislature was adjourned.

In the face of a barrage of hate from our legislative body, it is even more paramount to highlight and raise up the people who are doing the hard, sometimes dangerous work of advocating for the LGBTQ community. We are excited to honor the work of Safara Malone, an activist that found her passion in helping young girls find their identities, exemplifying that despite the systems built against trans people, trans people can break through and live fulfilling lives.

We are also thrilled to recognize the legacy of Shelly Lares, who has been one of the most enduring artists in the Tejano music scene for over 40 years and a member of the Tejano Roots Hall of Fame. Shelly started in Tejano Music when it was dominated by all-male bands. Throughout her career she has broken down barriers for women and has opened doors for other artists. She is a Tejano Music Icon, musician, songwriter, producer, guitarist, percussionist, business owner, and activist. Being proud of living her authentic self she wanted to give back to the LGBTQ+ community and started performing at Prides around the country. In 2022, Lares wrote and released the Pride anthem “Break Through” which features Eric Lee and Squishy and expresses her outlook on life and celebrates the LGBTQ+ community.

As we celebrate the achievements of our community, we hope tonight’s event inspires you to take action and support HRC in the fight for full LGBTQ+ equality. HRC remains hard at work lobbying to pass The Equality Act, an essential piece of legislation that establishes explicit, permanent protections against discrimination based on an individual’s sexual orientation or gender identity. Additionally, it prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in federal funding and access to public places. HRC in unity with our coalition partners will continue to mobilize and call to action every pro-equality voter to join us to defend our progress. There are many ways you can help by volunteering, joining our Federal Club, and voting in all elections for pro-equality candidates.

We are inspired by everyone in attendance here. Just by showing up you are making a difference! We also acknowledge that this event would not be possible without the generous support of our corporate partners, auction donors, table captains, and dedicated volunteers and HRC staff partners. Thank you so much for your commitment to equality and for making tonight possible.

Somos Familia! We are Family!

Shelly Lares

LEGACY AWARD

Nicknamed “Little Miss Dynamite” for her many talents, Shelly Lares has been one of the most enduring artists in the Tejano music scene for over 40 years and a member of the Tejano Roots Hall of Fame. She has a large devoted following due to her powerful singing voice and charismatic stage presence. She is a Tejano Music Icon, musician, songwriter, producer, guitarist, percussionist, business owner, and activist. She has been nominated and won several categories for the Tejano Music Awards, Pura Vida Awards, Cyber Awards, My Tejano Awards, Grammys, Latin Grammys and many more.

Lares recorded her first record at the age of 10 with The Hot Tamales Band which is where she was introduced to Tejano Music. Lares stayed with them for four years recording five 45 records before branching out on her own and signing with Manny Guerra. She recorded for Manny Music between 1989 and 1995. Her fifth album Quiero Ser Tu Amante was a breakthrough and landed inside the Top 40 of the Latin Albums Charts. Her biggest hit Soy Tu Amor, which she co wrote with JJ Reyes, was the most Latin played song of 1994. After leaving Manny she signed to Sony and her self-titled 1996 album peaked at 35 on the Top Latin Albums Chart and its single Siempre Lo Esperare was recognized by BMI that same year. It reached number 18 on the Regional Mexican Songs chart. Throughout the rest of the decade, she released two more albums, Aqui Me Encuentro (1997) and Donde Hay Fuego (1998).

Lares kicked off the new century with Mil Besos, her final album for Sony. It did well regionally and gave her the opportunity to record half of the album in Nashville alongside country superstar Vince Gill, who was featured on guitar and vocals. It also guaranteed her more nominations at the Tejano Music Awards including Album of the Year. Her 2002 album 3 Veces was her debut for Tejas Records. Lares immersed herself in touring, writing, and doing charity and community work with the San Antonio Children’s Shelter and Downtown Youth Drop-In Center and spent time mentoring students from elementary to college.

Her 2004 album Sigue Mi Camino earned her the first of three straight double victories from the Tejano Music Awards as Female Vocalist and Female Entertainer of the Year; the last coincided with her 2007 album Reflejo. Lares continued to record and released Mirando Adelante in 2010 which was her final album with Tejas. In 2012 she started her own record label Shellshock Records 3 which allowed her full control of recordings, manufacturing, distribution, and sales. Renacer in 2012 was the first off her label and did well on the digital charts and continued to rack up sales years after the initial release. Her 2013 album De Mi Corazon was nominated for a Latin Grammy in the best Tejano Album category. In 2015 Lares released her own single Trato Y Trato from her Obra De Amor album which earned success in sales and won Single Of The Year for Devuelveme El Corazon at the Tejano Music Awards. She has done numerous collaborations throughout her career with artists such as Little Joe, Ruben Ramos, Jay Perez, Negami, Pression, Avizo, Stevie D, and many others. One of her most successful collaborations has been with Elida Reyna and Stefani Montiel as LAS TRES DIVAS. They toured the United States, Japan, Guam, and Korea and received a Grammy Nomination as well as a Latin Grammy nomination for their album “Las Tres Divas”.

Shelly started in Tejano Music when it was dominated by all-male bands. Only a few female singers were making waves at the time, including Laura Canales and Selena. Throughout her career she has broken down barriers for women and has opened doors for other artists. In 2008 she made the decision to live her authentic self and come out in an industry where the LGBTQ+ community was not represented and often not accepted. Being a proud Latina Lesbian, she wanted to give back and show support to the LGBTQ+ community and started performing at Prides around the country.

In 2022, Lares wrote and released the Pride anthem “Break Through” which features Eric Lee and Squishy and expresses her outlook on life and celebrates the LGBTQ+ community. She also received the Tejano Music Lifetime Achievement Award, celebrated The Final Bow of her 40-year career, and proposed to the love of her life Mia Gutierrez. Shelly is pursuing hospice through music therapy for patients. Something that is very important and dear to her heart. She has her recording studio SHELLSHOCK STUDIO and signed her very first artist to her label SHELLSHOCK RECORDS 3 “EL GALLO DEZ”. She is quickly making her mark as a producer and record label CEO. Welcome to the next chapter of LMD!

Along life’s journey let’s travel together.

Safara Malone

TRAILBLAZER AWARD

Safara Malone is a Black trans-woman from Austin, Texas, and a national transgender youth activist. She’s an incoming Freshman at Harvard College, where she will study Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies & African American Studies. Her work began as part of the Roses Council, sponsored by GSA Network, filled with trans girls of color nationwide. It was through this program she found a passion for helping young girls find their identities. Having spoken with the Huff Post, leading national transgender justice events, being featured in the Associated Press (and other news publications), speaking at the Texas capitol against anti-trans legislation, and being featured in a documentary entitled “You’re Loved”, Safara focuses on how normalizing and sharing the real trans experience can help change the narrative. In addition to this work, She is also part of a community advisory board for a research project building trans-affirming sex education, sponsored by the University of Washington and Seattle University. This is the first project of its kind backed by the NIH, with trans youth advising the research goals. In addition to this, Safara is the Central Texas regional coordinator for the Texas GSA, responsible for organizing queer students and GSAs in the greater Austin area. She has even pursued forms of education for her work, in a Black trans-centered organizing program at the Transgender Law Center, entitled the Fierce Freedom School, where she was the only teenager in the program’s history. Currently, she holds positions at Equality Texas as a Field Intern and at Transgender Education Network Texas (TENT) as a Programs and Policy Associate. Outside of her advocacy work, she is the youngest person in the Texas Kiki Ballroom scene, as part of the House of Lepore.

Safara thinks her visibility during this contentious time for trans youth could be a beacon of light for other Black trans youth to look to for representation, showing that despite the systems built against trans people, they can break through and live happy lives.

WHAT WE DO

The Human Rights Campaign is America’s largest civil rights organization working for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer equality. Since 1980, we have been fighting for a better future for LGBTQ+ Americans. We are now working tirelessly to pass the Equality Act, which will soon head to the U.S. Senate for consideration, fight back against a multitude of anti-LGBTQ+ legis-lation in states nationwide and ensure everyone in our community is treated with dignity and respect. While our opponents are emboldened and on the attack, the Human Rights Campaign and our grass-roots army of more than 3.2 million members and supporters are energetically defending the rights we’ve gained and ramping up our fight for full equality across the board.

ANTI-EQUALITY LEADERS AND LEGISLATION

The alarming spate of anti-LGBTQ+ bills introduced across the country in 2020 has continued to surge in 2021. These include bills that would prohibit transgender youth from receiving genderaffirming care and bills that would prohibit transgender youth from participating in sports. This wave of anti-transgender legislation harkens back to the surge of anti-transgender bathroom bills that hit state legislatures in 2016, including North Carolina’s HB2. We remain committed to aggressively fighting these threats to equality by those who seek to undermine our rights. HRC will do whatever it takes to protect the rights and fundamental equality of every LGBTQ+ person in this country.

B U IL DING A ND DEM ONS TR AT ING POLITICAL P OWER

HRC’s decades-long work to build political power has uniquely positioned us to reach LGBTQ+ and ally voters who prioritize equality on the ballot, also known as Equality Voters. HRC has identified 57 million Equality Voters nationwide who, if they turn out to vote, will support pro-equality candidates. HRC’s early and sustained year-round engagement in battleground states like Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin bolstered historic turnout in 2018 and 2020 producing pro-equality outcomes at every level of government. In 2019, HRC’s mobilization of Equality Voters in Virginia, where lawmakers had repeatedly blocked proequality bills over many years, produced groundbreaking progress for LGBTQ+ Americans in the South. These victories led to the Virginia Values Act becoming law, making Virginia the first state in the South to advance statewide nondiscrimination protections for LGBTQ+ people.

ADVANCING EQUALITY IN OUR DAILY LIVES

The HRC Foundation improves the lives LGBTQ+ people by building understanding and shaping the public debate of LGBTQ+ people and the challenges they face through innovative research and public education campaigns. We also change the policies and practices in the institutions that shape our everyday lives (hospitals, schools, workplaces, and more) and empower strategic partners, community advocates, and allies through convenings and capacity-building. Guided by these theories of change and seeking to prioritize work impacting those who are multiply marginalized, we have 11 cuttingedge programs advancing equality in the U.S. and beyond.

All Children - All Families is the only national program dedicated to LGBTQ+ inclusion in child welfare (foster care and adoption agencies) that provides resource development, technical assistance and training.

Public Education & Research produces written resources and conducts original quantitative and qualitative research exploring the lived experiences of LGBTQ+ people.
