Isabel Cordova & Jay Henslee 2022 HRC San Diego Dinner Co-Chairs Welcome
While the political landscape looks much different now than when we last met in 2019, the last couple of years have been trying for all facets of the LGBTQ+ community, people of color, people of transgender experience, femaleidentifying individuals-ALL of us. It is our hope you enjoy and find inspiration in this dinner and leave feeling charged in looking towards the future. We ask you to join, or reenergize yourself, in the fight alongside the Human Rights Campaign in the second half of 2022. We could not do this work without all of you and your support is vital to HRC. Unfortunately, already in 2022, at least 24 transgender individuals, primarily black transgender women, have been murdered for simply living their authentic lives. We must remember these individuals, celebrate those that are still with us, and fight for all folks who have suffered at the hands of anti-LGBT hate and intolerance. We are gearing up for summer and fall primary elections across the country followed by midterms later this year. To this end, HRC continues to fight to pass the Equality Act, continuing to carry this legislation to protect all LGBTQ+ Americans. HRC is also endorsing pro-equality politicians across the country that will vote in our favor and make marked progress for the LGBTQ+ community. All 435 seats in the US House of Representatives will be up for reelection this fall. We have seen voters speak up for women’s rights in states such as Kansas and adamantly disavow anti-choice legislation due to the overturn of Roe versus Wade earlier this year. We still have power!
HRC’s campaigns are focused on mobilizing those who envision a world strengthened by diversity, where our laws and society treat all people equally, including LGBTQ+ people and those who are marginalized. More than 250 antiLGBTQ+ bills were introduced in states this year - 24 were enacted. HRC is taking the fight to the courts in Florida, Arkansas, Mississippi and Tennessee. Simply put, we are suing. We enthusiastically thank all of our sponsors, community partners, local leaders, distinguished speakers, amazing entertainers, attendees, and supporters! We want to give a special thank you to our many volunteers who made this evening possible. Our planning committee has worked diligently to make this evening possible and one to remember!
We have so much work yet to do, but we want to focus on the momentum we have and hope towards the future. With this, we urge you to support HRC by bidding on our auction items and joining HRC as a Federal Club member. We are thrilled to have you with us tonight and in the continued fight for equality.
Dear Equality Supporters, We are thrilled to welcome you all to the 9th Annual San Diego Human Rights Campaign Fundraising Dinner and Silent WeAuction!cannot express enough our gratitude and heartfelt appreciation to have you all join us in returning to the historic U.S. Grant hotel in the beautiful Presidential Ballroom. This historic gem has been welcoming visitors to San Diego for over 100 years, and we are grateful for their support. The reality is, we have all been navigating new challenges the past two and a half years- gathering, celebrating, and activating virtually. We are hard-wired for human interaction and engagement; to that end, our local Steering Committee cannot thank you all enough for supporting us through virtual events, fundraisers, and political campaigns. The ability to come together, lean on one another, and embrace each other in person feels more special than ever!
Cheers to nearly 10 years,

Her maternal grandmother, who helped raise Kristine and her four siblings, was a classical violinist who was struck by lightning – “One of the few people to survive that,” Kristine notes – which threw her arms out of their shoulder sockets. After they were wired back in place, she could no longer play the violin, so she taught herself how to play the guitar set in her lap. “It just showed me the power of music because she continued to be musical, and figured out ways to adapt to her situation. She was an amazing woman.”
KRISTINE W PERFORMER
Named by Billboard Magazine as the #8 Greatest Dance Artist of All Time, Kristine W has proven herself a lasting talent. Through nearly twenty-five years in music, she has consistency delivered songs that touch hearts and souls and compel bodies to find the mighty groove out on the dance floor. Her latest single, “Out There,” the title track from her soon-to-be-released album, continues her legacy, recently climbing to #3 on the US dance charts.
Kristine W launched her career in 1994. In that time, she has scored 17 #1 Dance hits on Billboard and a recordsetting string of nine consecutive #1s on the Hot Dance Club Songs chart. Her chart successes have broken records held by the likes of Madonna and Janet Jackson (most consecutive #1s) as well as Mariah Carey (most #1 dance hits). She is named among the top three of the last decade’s club play artists trailing only Madonna and Beyoncé. While she has the talents of a diva in spades, Kristine W eschews all the excesses too often associated with the term such as narcissism and egoism. She keeps her focus on the art and profession of being a singer, songwriter and musician, and enjoys a grassroots mutual affection with fans who revere her voice, appreciate how the aspects of life and emotions she sings about echo their own feelings and experiences, and enjoy how Kristine continually pushes the envelope to forge dynamic grooves and mixes that keep the dance floor pulsing. So how did a ranch-raised small-town girl from rural Washington State end up as “the most soulful vocalist in dance music, period,” according to All Music Guide? Kristine credits Donna Summer for instilling the love of dance into her. “She had that big gorgeous voice,” says Kristine of the late disco music pioneer and superstar. “Her voice sounded almost like gospel to me. It was dance with the big background vocals and the layered harmonies and she also has a jazzy overtone to her voice. She was everything I would aspire to: Wow, that’s what I want to do. How do I do this?”
Kristine’s mother was also an entertainer. She showed Kristine that a singing career was possible. “Mom did it because my Dad passed away when we were babies and it was a matter of survival. That’s what she got a job doing right away and how she was able to keep food on the table for us,” Kristine explains.

As an umbrella term it may encompass same-sex attraction and a wide variety of gender variance, including people who might be described in Western culture as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transsexual, transgender, gender queer, cross-dressers or who have multiple gender identities.

The alarming spate of anti-LGBTQ+ bills introduced across the country in 2020 has continued to surge in 2021. These include bills that would prohibit transgender youth from receiving genderaffirming care and bills that would prohibit transgender youth from participating in sports. This wave of anti-transgender legislation harkens back to the surge of anti-transgender bathroom bills that hit state legislatures in 2016, including North Carolina’s HB2. We remain committed to aggressively fighting these threats to equality by those who seek to undermine our rights. WHAT WE DO
ANTI-EQUALITY LEADERS AND LEGISLATION
Health & Aging provides resources and training to help thousands of healthcare facilities adopt inclusive policies and practices to better serve LGBTQ+ patients and employees.
HRC’s decades-long work to build political power has uniquely positioned us to reach LGBTQ+ and ally voters who prioritize equality on the ballot, also known as Equality Voters. HRC has identified 57 million Equality Voters nationwide who, if they turn out to vote, will support pro-equality candidates. HRC’s early and sustained year-round engagement in battleground states like Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin bolstered historic turnout in 2018 and 2020 producing pro-equality outcomes at every level of government. In 2019, HRC’s mobilization of Equality Voters in Virginia, where lawmakers had repeatedly blocked proequality bills over many years, produced groundbreaking progress for LGBTQ+ Americans in the South. These victories led to the Virginia Values Act becoming law, making Virginia the first state in the South to advance statewide nondiscrimination protections for LGBTQ+ people.
The Human Rights Campaign is America’s largest civil rights organization working for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer equality. Since 1980, we have been fighting for a better future for LGBTQ+ Americans. We are now working tirelessly to pass the Equality Act, which will soon head to the U.S. Senate for consideration, fight back against a multitude of anti-LGBTQ+ legis-lation in states nationwide and ensure everyone in our community is treated with dignity and respect. While our opponents are emboldened and on the attack, the Human Rights Campaign and our grass-roots army of more than 3.2 million members and supporters are energetically defending the rights we’ve gained and ramping up our fight for full equality across the board.
HIV & Health Equity develops public education and capacitybuilding programs to address the disproportionate impact of HIV on Black and Latinx communities.
ADVANCING EQUALITY IN OUR DAILY LIVES
Transgender Justice Initiative leads economic empowerment programs, capacity-building initiatives, community engagement efforts, and public safety education campaigns that combat the discrimination faced by transgender people.
The HRC Foundation improves the lives LGBTQ+ people by building understanding and shaping the public debate of LGBTQ+ people and the challenges they face through innovative research and public education campaigns. We also change the policies and practices in the institutions that shape our everyday lives (hospitals, schools, workplaces, and more) and empower strategic partners, community advocates, and allies through convenings and capacity-building. Guided by these theories of change and seeking to prioritize work impacting those who are multiply marginalized, we have 11 cuttingedge programs advancing equality in the U.S. and beyond.
