CORPORATE PARTNERS

We are delighted you’ve joined us tonight. We are so thrilled we are able to gather together in equality to celebrate our wins, and continue the fight to overcome the challenges. Tonight, we come together to honor those who fight for equality and justice and renew and recharge our personal activism.

In 2023, Utah saw unprecedented attacks on queer youth including the ban on trans medical care for minors with the passing of SB-16. Throughout our nation, we are seeing a record number of antiTrans and anti-LGBTQ+ bills introduced and passed at alarming rates. We also face ongoing attacks on people based on their reproductive abilities, skin color, religion, and economics. Tonight, we reaffirm our belief that each of our own liberation is bound to the liberation of all humans.

We are excited to honor the work of Dr Lisa Tensmeyer Hanson Clinical Director of Flourish Therapy and Stonewall Sports, two organizations doing life-changing and life-affirming work here in Utah. We are also thrilled to recognize Tyler Glenn whose advocacy worldwide inspires so many. As we celebrate the achievements of our community, we hope tonight’s event inspires you to take action and support HRC in the fight for full LGBTQ+ equality.

HRC remains hard at work pushing to pass The Equality Act, an essential piece of legislation that establishes explicit, permanent protections against discrimination based on an individual’s sexual orientation or gender identity. Additionally, it prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in federal funding and access to public places. An overwhelming majority of Americans support nondiscrimination protections and Utah is proof that these laws can pass even in conservative states. But without federal protections, too many of us are at the mercy of our local legislatures. The time to pass the Equality Act is NOW! There are many ways you can help by volunteering, joining our Federal Club, volunteering with the steering committee, and voting for pro-equality politicians.

We know that this past year has been hard, and we are so incredibly inspired by everyone attending this event tonight. Just by showing up you are making a difference! We also acknowledge that this event would not be possible without the generous support of our corporate partners, auction donors, table captains, and dedicated volunteers and HRC staff partners. Thank you so much for your commitment to equality and for making tonight possible.

Let’s get this party started!

VISABILITY AWARD Tyler Glenn

Tyler Glenn is a songwriter, singer and keyboardist who was introduced to the pop, rock, alternative, and dance charts as frontman for multi-platinum act Neon Trees. A self-taught musician, he spent his formative years in Southern California, where Neon Trees began to take root.

In early 2009, Neon Trees were signed to Mercury/Island Def Jan Records; The group’s Mercury debut, Habits, arrived in early 2010, and the single “Animal” became a Billboard Alternative Songs number one.

2012 saw the release of their sophomore album Picture Show, produced by Justin Meldal-Johnsen, featuring their hit song Everybody Talks. After reuniting with Habits producer Tim Pagnotta to record their third album, Pop Psychology in 2013, Glenn revealed in March 2014 in a Rolling Stone feature that he was gay. A similar soul-searching mood ran throughout the album, which arrived that April. In 2015, the band returned with the non-album single “Songs I Can’t Listen To”.

In April 2016, Glenn released his first song as a solo artist. The brusk electro-pop single “Trash” and its accompanying music video drew controversy for criticizing the conservative values of the singer’s former faith, Mormonism. Titled Excommunication, his full-length debut arrived on Island Records that fall.

Tyler Glenn founded Loveloud Festival in 2017 alongside Dan Reynolds of Imagine Dragons, and sits on the board of the Loveloud Foundation, supporting LGBTQ+ youth in unaccepting homes and communities that are at risk of suicide and drug use. Jennifer Holliday

SPECIAL GUEST

Jennifer Holliday has been proclaimed a Broadway legend by critics and fans alike. Her show-stopping, heartwrenching performance of the torch ballad “And I am Telling You, I’m Not Going” in the 1981 smash hit, Dreamgirls, is considered one of the all-time best performances in a Broadway musical. The iconic role made Jennifer Holliday a household name and introduced her big, soulful voice to the world.

Now, Jennifer is showing the world a new musical look with her latest CD project, This Song Is You (2014, Shanachie Records). The album showcases her extraordinary vocal range and mastery of multiple musical genres. The eleven songs on the album run the gamut from smooth jazz (“Love Dance”) to 1960s classics (“The Look Of Love,” and “At Last”) to the soulful “Are You Leaving Me?” and “The One You Used To Be,” to the R&B groove of “Baby 2Nite,” to the soul/ funk standard, “Love Is On The Way,” a song written by and first recorded by D.J. Rogers, to “The Song Is You,” the title track of this wonderful musical journey, which features a brilliant sweeping string arrangement, reminiscent of recordings of the ‘40s and ‘50s. Holliday breathes new life into the songs on the album, bringing her own distinctive nuances and phrasing to them and making them completely her own.

Born and raised in Houston, TX, Jennifer went straight from the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Choir to the Broadway stage. One Sunday, while singing in the church choir, she was discovered by dancer Jamie Patterson who was touring in the national company of A Chorus Line. Jamie not only set up an audition for Jennifer in New York for the show Your Arms Are Too Short To Box With God, but he also bought her an airline ticket and made arrangements for her to stay with his aunt. During the audition with the show’s creator and director, Vinnette Carroll, Jennifer sang her favorite hymn, “God Will Take Care of You.” And that He did. She was hired for the show that same day.

Jennifer toured with Your Arms Are Too Short To Box With God for five months and then made her Broadway debut with the show. As her reputation grew, Jennifer came to the attention of many theater luminaries and critics, most notably the renowned Broadway director and choreographer Michael Bennett, the creator of A Chorus Line. As soon as he heard her sing, he knew he wanted to work with her. He invited her to participate in an untitled project that he was producing. Even though, at the time, Jennifer wasn’t familiar with Bennett, and she was still performing in Your Arms Are Too Short To Box With God, Bennett’s project sounded too good to pass up. The project turned out to be Dreamgirls, which had previews in Boston and opened on Broadway on December 21, 1981, at the Imperial Theatre. Her portrayal of Effie “Melody” White, a role which she co-created, not only brought theatergoers to their feet for eight performances a week, but also garnered her a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical and her first GRAMMY® Award for Best R&B Female Vocalist.

WHAT WE DO

The Human Rights Campaign is America’s largest civil rights organization working for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer equality. Since 1980, we have been fighting for a better future for LGBTQ+ Americans. We are now working tirelessly to pass the Equality Act, which will soon head to the U.S. Senate for consideration, fight back against a multitude of anti-LGBTQ+ legis-lation in states nationwide and ensure everyone in our community is treated with dignity and respect. While our opponents are emboldened and on the attack, the Human Rights Campaign and our grass-roots army of more than 3.2 million members and supporters are energetically defending the rights we’ve gained and ramping up our fight for full equality across the board.

ANTI-EQUALITY LEADERS AND LEGISLATION

The alarming spate of anti-LGBTQ+ bills introduced across the country in 2020 has continued to surge in 2021. These include bills that would prohibit transgender youth from receiving genderaffirming care and bills that would prohibit transgender youth from participating in sports. This wave of anti-transgender legislation harkens back to the surge of anti-transgender bathroom bills that hit state legislatures in 2016, including North Carolina’s HB2. We remain committed to aggressively fighting these threats to equality by those who seek to undermine our rights. HRC will do whatever it takes to protect the rights and fundamental equality of every LGBTQ+ person in this country.

BU ILDING A ND DEMONSTR AT ING POLITICAL P OWER

HRC’s decades-long work to build political power has uniquely positioned us to reach LGBTQ+ and ally voters who prioritize equality on the ballot, also known as Equality Voters. HRC has identified 57 million Equality Voters nationwide who, if they turn out to vote, will support pro-equality candidates. HRC’s early and sustained year-round engagement in battleground states like Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin bolstered historic turnout in 2018 and 2020 producing pro-equality outcomes at every level of government. In 2019, HRC’s mobilization of Equality Voters in Virginia, where lawmakers had repeatedly blocked proequality bills over many years, produced groundbreaking progress for LGBTQ+ Americans in the South. These victories led to the Virginia Values Act becoming law, making Virginia the first state in the South to advance statewide nondiscrimination protections for LGBTQ+ people.

ADVANCING EQUALITY IN OUR DAILY LIVES

The HRC Foundation improves the lives LGBTQ+ people by building understanding and shaping the public debate of LGBTQ+ people and the challenges they face through innovative research and public education campaigns. We also change the policies and practices in the institutions that shape our everyday lives (hospitals, schools, workplaces, and more) and empower strategic partners, community advocates, and allies through convenings and capacity-building. Guided by these theories of change and seeking to prioritize work impacting those who are multiply marginalized, we have 11 cuttingedge programs advancing equality in the U.S. and beyond.

All Children - All Families is the only national program dedicated to LGBTQ+ inclusion in child welfare (foster care and adoption agencies) that provides resource development, technical assistance and training.
