WELCOME Welcome to the 2022 Human Rights Campaign Utah Dinner!

We are thrilled you’ve joined us and so incredibly thankful to be able to host in-person events again. Your presence tonight is made more meaningful by the experiences of the past two years. Tonight, we come together to honor those who fight for equality and justice and renew and recharge our personal activism. In 2022, Utah saw unprecedented attacks on queer and BIPOC youth and, sadly, there are more dangerous threats in the works. Throughout our nation, we are seeing a record number of anti-Trans and anti-LGBTQ+ bills introduced and passed at alarming rates. We also face ongoing attacks on people based on their reproductive abilities, skin color, religion, and economics. Tonight, we reaffirm our belief that each of our own liberation is bound to the liberation of all humans. We are excited to honor the work of Project Rainbow and the University of Utah’s Adolescent Medicine Clinic, two organizations doing life-changing and life-affirming work here in Utah. We are also thrilled to recognize Elaine Hendrix whose allyship inspires so many. As we celebrate the achievements of our community, we hope tonight’s event inspires you to take action and support HRC in the fight for full LGBTQ+ equality. HRC remains hard at work pushing to pass The Equality Act, an essential piece of legislation that establishes explicit, permanent protections against discrimination based on an individual’s sexual orientation or gender identity. Additionally, it prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in federal funding and access to public places. An overwhelming majority of Americans support non-discrimination protections and Utah is proof that these laws can pass even in conservative states but without federal protections, too many of us are at the mercy of our local legislatures. The time to pass the Equality Act is NOW! There are many ways you can help by volunteering, joining our Federal Club, and voting for proequality politicians. We know that these past years have been hard, and we are so incredibly inspired by everyone attending this event tonight. Just by showing up you are making a difference! We also acknowledge that this event would not be possible without the generous support of our corporate partners, auction donors, table captains, and dedicated volunteers and HRC staff partners. Thank you so much for your commitment to equality and for making tonight possible. Let’s get this party started!

Claire Martinez, Nick Kiahtipes, and Alli Martin HRC Utah Board of Governors and 2022 Dinner Chairs

Dear Utah Community,

Join us in telling our elected officials to stop targeting LGBTQ+ youth NOW! We have been facing an unprecedented onslaught of bills targeting LGBTQ+ youth in state legislatures across the country — and the attacks on equality are just getting worse. We need your help to ensure we can fight back against every anti-LGBTQ+ piece of legislation that comes our way this year. Add your name below and we’ll follow-up with additional actions whenever bills affecting the LGBTQ+ community move in your state legislature. Let’s show anti-equality legislators that we won’t tolerate any more bullying and discrimination! Take action now: add your name and join with thousands of others to defend our rights. Your signature will send a message to our opponents that we are a force to be reckoned with. Sincerely,

Bruce Bastian and Clint Ford

HONOREE U OF U HEALTH ADOLESCENT MEDICINE CLINIC In the last three years, anti-LGBTQ+ groups and politicians have singled out transgender kids to deny them access to gender-affirming medical treatment, prevent them from participating in sports teams consistent with their gender identity, and deny access to bathrooms. Utah is, unfortunately, one of those states where transgender youth are under attack. Luckily Utah also has the University of Utah’s Adolescent Transgender Medicine clinic – a place where transgender, non-binary, intersex, and gender diverse youth can access comprehensive physical, mental, and emotional care. The team offers life-affirming services including puberty blockers, hormone therapy, nutrition guidance, family planning, surgery, and support programs. For families navigating a child’s gender journey, the clinic’s resources and support are critical. The clinic also participates in the Human Rights Campaign’s Healthcare Equality Index which requires systemwide training to staff and providers. They have been designated a leader for their work promoting equitable and inclusive care for LGBTQ+ families.

HONOREE PROJECT RAINBOW Gilbert Baker designed the iconic rainbow flag in 1978 and explained that, in his opinion, “Our job as gay people [is] to come out, be visible, to live in truth, as I say, to get out of the lie.” Forty years later Project Rainbow was founded and continues Baker’s vision by staking rainbow and transgender flags across the state of Utah in beautiful displays of pride, allyship, and visibility. While they may be best known for their flag staking campaigns, Project Rainbow supports the LGBTQ+ community in Utah in many important ways including their Fashion Fluid pop-up boutique, Big Gay BarbieQ community picnic, LGBTQIA+ Family toy and clothing drive, and Community Fund grants. This year alone, Project Rainbow awarded over $68,000 to 29 organizations supporting a wide variety of LGBTQ+ projects and events in our state. Special Performance THELMA HOUSTON Grammy winning Motown Legend A Mississippi native, Houston started out in the 60s performing gospel music with the Art Reynolds Singers. She signed to Capitol Records (home of the Beatles, Nat King Cole, and Nancy Wilson) in 1967, and had her first hit song with “Baby Mine.” Offered a solo recording contract, Houston released her first album, Sunshower, on ABC Dunhill in 1969, which was written and produced by the legendary Jimmy Webb. After this critically acclaimed debut, Houston signed with Motown Records. At Motown, Houston claimed the top of the pop, R&B, and dance charts with her high-powered rendition of “Don’t Leave Me This Way.” That Gold Record classic gave Houston the distinction of being the first solo female artist at Motown to win the GRAMMY Award for “Best R&B Female Vocal Performance.” In early 2020, Houston collaborated with Morrissey on “Bobby, Don’t You Think They Know.” Also released in 2020 was the dance single “Turn Your World Around” (Radikal Records) with Bimbo Jones. The song rose on the Billboard Dance Charts to #7. The summer of 2020 found Houston teaming up once again with Jimmy Webb for the song called “Someone is Standing Outside.” With appearances from Tokyo to Las Vegas to London and beyond, Houston continues to bring audiences to their feet each year with national and international performances. Houston is known as a humanitarian for her charitable causes and her tireless efforts in the battle against AIDS. In 2003, the City of West Hollywood proclaimed January 29 as “Thelma Houston Day.” She has donated her talents to numerous charities, including Divine Design for Project Angel Food, AIDS Project Los Angeles, and the Minority AIDS Project, to which she donated her $20,000 winnings from the TV NBC show Hit Me Baby, One More Time. She is also very active in the Beverly Hills / Hollywood branch of the NAACP and is a longtime supporter of the Human Rights Campaign (HRC). “We have been fortunate to benefit from Thelma’s support for many years and are truly grateful,” said Richard Ayoub, Executive Director, Project Angel Food. “It’s a testament to her artistry and ingenuity that she would create a way to bring us closer together during these troubled times and give.” Ms. Houston recently brought the house down on “Motown 60: A Grammy Celebration” shown on CBS TV and on “DJ Cassidy’s Pass The Mic.” On BET. WHAT WE DO The Human Rights Campaign is America’s largest civil rights organization working for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer equality. Since 1980, we have been fighting for a better future for LGBTQ+ Americans. We are now working tirelessly to pass the Equality Act, which will soon head to the U.S. Senate for consideration, fight back against a multitude of anti-LGBTQ+ legis-lation in states nationwide and ensure everyone in our community is treated with dignity and respect. While our opponents are emboldened and on the attack, the Human Rights Campaign and our grass-roots army of more than 3.2 million members and supporters are energetically defending the rights we’ve gained and ramping up our fight for full equality across the board.

ANTI-EQUALITY LEADERS AND LEGISLATION

The alarming spate of anti-LGBTQ+ bills introduced across the country in 2020 has continued to surge in 2021. These include bills that would prohibit transgender youth from receiving genderaffirming care and bills that would prohibit transgender youth from participating in sports. This wave of anti-transgender legislation harkens back to the surge of anti-transgender bathroom bills that hit state legislatures in 2016, including North Carolina’s HB2. We remain committed to aggressively fighting these threats to equality by those who seek to undermine our rights. HRC will do whatever it takes to protect the rights and fundamental equality of every LGBTQ+ person in this country.

BUILDING AND DEMONSTRATING POLITICAL POWER

HRC’s decades-long work to build political power has uniquely positioned us to reach LGBTQ+ and ally voters who prioritize equality on the ballot, also known as Equality Voters. HRC has identified 57 million Equality Voters nationwide who, if they turn out to vote, will support pro-equality candidates. HRC’s early and sustained year-round engagement in battleground states like Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin bolstered historic turnout in 2018 and 2020 producing pro-equality outcomes at every level of government. In 2019, HRC’s mobilization of Equality Voters in Virginia, where lawmakers had repeatedly blocked proequality bills over many years, produced groundbreaking progress for LGBTQ+ Americans in the South. These victories led to the Virginia Values Act becoming law, making Virginia the first state in the South to advance statewide nondiscrimination protections for LGBTQ+ people.

ADVANCING EQUALITY IN OUR DAILY LIVES

The HRC Foundation improves the lives LGBTQ+ people by building understanding and shaping the public debate of LGBTQ+ people and the challenges they face through innovative research and public education campaigns. We also change the policies and practices in the institutions that shape our everyday lives (hospitals, schools, workplaces, and more) and empower strategic partners, community advocates, and allies through convenings and capacity-building. Guided by these theories of change and seeking to prioritize work impacting those who are multiply marginalized, we have 11 cuttingedge programs advancing equality in the U.S. and beyond.

All Children - All Families is the only national program

dedicated to LGBTQ+ inclusion in child welfare (foster care and adoption agencies) that provides resource development, technical assistance and training.

Public Education & Research produces written resources and conducts original quantitative and qualitative research exploring the lived experiences of LGBTQ+ people. Global Partnerships provides capacity-building and leadership development opportunities to LGBTQ+ advocates from around the world to strengthen movements and advance global LGBTQ+ equality. HBCU Program is the only national project that partners with Historically Black Colleges and Universities on establishing an LGBTQ+-inclusive campus climate. Health & Aging provides resources and training to help thousands of healthcare facilities adopt inclusive policies and practices to better serve LGBTQ+ patients and employees. HIV & Health Equity develops public education and capacitybuilding programs to address the disproportionate impact of HIV on Black and Latinx communities. Religion & Faith provides faith leaders with opportunities

and tools to stand up for equality even as opponents attempt to weaponize faith against LGBTQ+ people.

Transgender Justice Initiative leads economic empowerment programs, capacity-building initiatives, community engagement efforts, and public safety education campaigns that combat the discrimination faced by transgender people. Welcoming Schools is the only bias-based bullying prevention program in the nation to provide LGBTQ+-specific training and resources with an intersectional lens, developed for use in elementary schools. Workplace Equality advances equality for LGBTQ+ workers through the adoption and implementation of inclusive policies, practices, and benefits in the U.S. and beyond.

Youth Well-Being provides professional development to over 5,000 youth-serving professionals annually, through the annual Time to THRIVE conference, webinars, participation at major national convenings, and by amplifying the stories of HRC Youth Ambassadors. The program also convenes HRC’s Parents for Transgender Equality Council. Updated 10-26-2021
