“Christmas in Grimsby is a real kick-start to the festive season. I hope that you all bring family and friends to join us for this year’s fabulous festivities.”

in Grimsby 2016

Councillor Ray Oxby Leader of North East Lincolnshire Council “Each year, we try to make Christmas a bit special in our towns, and this year’s no exception. We’re pleased to be supporting the Christmas event again, and I hope everyone has a fantastic and peaceful Christmas time.”

Michelle Lalor Editor, Grimsby Telegraph “WHEN you start to think about Christmas, one thing springs to mind…and that is the shopping! Getting a wonderful gift for that someone special…well you will almost certainly be able to find what you are looking for in Grimsby, with its eclectic mix of shops to suit all tastes.”

Programme Manager, Lincs FM “Christmas in North East Lincolnshire is one of the highlights of our year for both the team at Compass FM and Lincs FM, seeing so many families come together to help celebrate the season – and celebrate the fantastic shopping facilities we have here. We can’t wait to get the event officially underway on stage, with entertainment, competition and the big countdown as the lights are switched on.” 2

Local festive fun for all the family Season’s Greetings ...to visitors and residents of North East Lincolnshire. The private sector led Visitor Economy, Service and Retail (VESR) group behind DiscoverNEL, in partnership with North East Lincolnshire Council, and in association with our many partners are delighted to deliver another spectacular start to Christmas 2016 on Thursday 24 November.

If you haven’t started your Christmas shopping yet, there’s plenty to go at in North East Lincolnshire – from boutique shopping and gifts, something from the high street, or something special from the Christmas market, why not spend a few hours in the town before the evening festivities. Santa and his reindeer sleigh will be joining us again, along with our local hero who will switch on the lights on the Compass FM / Lincs FM stage. On behalf of the team behind Christmas in Grimsby, support your town, enjoy the evening and have a really good Christmas and New Year. 3

Christmas Markets Over the two days of festivities, there will be lots available to tickle your tastebuds. If it’s something to eat you’re after, visit one of the many food companies who will have their stands there with plenty of local produce on offer. Or for those of you who are still young at heart, there’s the helter skelter as well as rides for the young ones. And for this year, alongside the reindeer petting area, there will be donkey rides available on the Thursday. So come along with the family and enjoy the atmosphere.

The BIG Event

in Grimsby 2016

Look who’s coming to town Come and see some of the other great talent we have lined up.

On Thursday 24 November, as well as the lights switch on stars of Britain’s Got Talent, the dogs and their owners of Grimsby’s based Klever K9’s will be dancing and wagging tails to favourite Christmas songs. Escorting Father Christmas in the parade, the Klever K9’s will also take to the stage for a festive routine of tricks and dance moves. Award winning theatre production group, Curtain Up will get everyone in the festive mood stage with live performances of festive tunes and songs from the West End when they’re on the Compass FM / Lincs FM. And performers from one of the best known and longest running Dance Schools in North East Lincolnshire, the Pat Yarborough Theatre Dance School, will escort Father Christmas to the Minster in the Parade and take to the stage, performing dance routines to well known Christmas classics, getting everyone in the festive mood. Characters from this year’s panto at Grimsby Auditorium will be both in the parade and on the Compass FM / Lincs FM stage.

7

Entertaining the town From mid afternoon on Thursday November 24, reindeer will be at the Riverhead for petting and photographs before the parade starts at 5.30pm. And as an extra treat this year, we’ll have donkeys available for rides on Riverhead too. Santa’s sleigh, with the 2016 Local Hero on board, will parade the streets of Grimsby before pausing for the Local Hero to switch on the lights on the Compass FM / Lincs FM stage. The parade will follow the same route as last year: •

Riverhead

George Street

Osborne Street

Bethlehem Street

Grimsby Minster

Chase and Marshall from the popular CBBC programme PAW Patrol have already been revealed as the guests for the eagerly anticipated event. In the past, people come from far and wide to be a part of the start of the annual festive period, getting the early opportunity to try some great food and drink too. The launch will also see the start of late-night shopping at the Freshney Place Shopping Centre as the countdown to Christmas steps up a level. 8

The hunt for a

Local Hero

HRISTMAS is a time for sharing and for getting together to celebrate all that is good about life! And what better way to start your festive celebrations then making sure someone really special in your life is recognised – and gets a very, very special preChristmas treat…and here is a way you can do just that! The search is on once more to find a true town hero, who will take centre stage at the great Christmas event. An independent panel of judges will pick the 2016 winner, who will turn on the town’s Christmas lights. For the last few weeks we have been asking Grimsby Telegraph readers to nominate the people in their lives who, for a whole host of reasons, deserve this very special festive treat. They could be someone who has overcome adversity and great challenges in their life – be it a battle with illness or a determination to fight against all the odds to get themselves back on track.

Victoria Nachorna Local Hero 2015

Or indeed, it could well be someone who has helped you. You have maybe had a real issue in your life in the last few years – and a very special person has helped you to overcome that. Maybe you want to give that person an extra special festive treat, and nominating them to switch on the Grimsby Christmas lights could be the very way of doing just that. As we move closer to the event, the judges will be looking over all the entries and selecting who they think is the most deserving to be given the honour of being recognised as our very own ‘Local Hero’! It is great experience, to ride with Santa in his sleigh and officially start the Great Grimsby Christmas celebrations for 2016!
