he Hull Daily Mail Business Awards is back next month, and this year’s impressive shortlisted businesses and individuals have been revealed. From small companies and fledgling start-ups to major manufacturers and firms employing hundreds of staff, the awards will be shining a light on successes across the region over the UK City of Culture year. Now in its 17th year, the awards have firmly cemented its position as a highlight in Hull and East Yorkshire’s business calendar. This year, it will culminate in a glittering ceremony at the KCOM Stadium on November 16, where popular businessman and Bafta-winning TV personality will entertain guests with his inspiring tale of defying market conditions to launch the Bank of Dave. Over the past 12 months, the region has played host to scores of good news stories, with jobs and wealth being created in factories and shop floors, business parks, offices and retail premises in every corner of the patch. Managing director of the Hull Daily Mail, Mike Pennington, said: “Growing and maintaining a business is not easy. “The economic sands may be shifting in our favour, but challenges remain, and businesses need more than just determination and sound financial sense to succeed – they need a lot of hard graft and passion. “As Hull celebrates its UK City of Culture year, all eyes are on the region. The city has been placed on a global stage like never before. “Now is the chance to show others what we have all known for a long time – that Hull and East Yorkshire has a lot to be proud of, and our businesses, employers and entrepreneurs are key to this.

“The Hull Daily Mail Business Awards will once again prove the excellence and ingenuity that exists right here on our doorstep. Also watch out for a few surprises on this very special night.” Our area is home to some of Yorkshire’s biggest companies, but equally it is a hot-

bed of talent for entrepreneurial outfits of all shapes and sizes. The shortlisted nominees have exemplified the excellence and ingenuity that often goes unnoticed in the region, and the awards on Thursday, November 16 will give these organisations the chance to celebrate their hard work.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Managing director of the Hull Daily Mail, Mike Pennington.

He’s an example to all entrepreneurs and the face behind Bank Of Dave. Henry Saker-Clark talks to this year’s special guest

D

ave Fishwick knows one or two things about building a successful business out of nothing. Launching his first business with just £250 and a red Capri, he went on to become one of Burnley’s most famous businessmen. Now a successful entrepreneur with a portfolio of business to his name, not to mention two Baftas and a host of television appearances, the question of how to make money from nothing seems a distant memory away, though it remains a problem for many fledgling entrepreneurs. Next month, the self-made millionaire will be heading to Hull to speak at the Mail’s Business Awards about how he went from a Burnley boy with nothing to one of the most talked-about entrepreneurs on TV. He will get the chance to share his wisdom at the awards, which will highlight the talent that has been on show while the limelight has been firmly pointed on Hull throughout the city of culture year. Mail editor Neil Hodgkinson said: “I always look forward to what is one of my favourite award ceremonies of the year. “The night is full of positive energy and you cannot fail to be impressed by the variety of talented people and successful companies that are represented in the audience.

I came from a very poor background, but I am very proud of that background Dave Fishwick

“It is a fantastic antidote to the naysayers predicting economic gloom. “This region continues to produce impressive people and impressive results and this was reflected by the biggest entry we have ever enjoyed from local businesses and individuals. It is going to be a great evening.” The ceremony will take place at the KCOM Stadium in Hull, where the winners will be announced to celebrate Hull and East Yorkshire’s successes in all its for ms. With the completion of multi-millionpound developments over the past year, including Siemens Gamesa blade factory in Alexandra Dock, the business world in Hull has shone under the City of Culture spotlight. But this growth and success shows no signs of fading as the year comes to a close, with important developments including the £200m Energy Works site and new £105m RB research and development site set to open in 2018. Alongside globally recognisable firms, SMEs have made their mark this year and feature regularly in the shortlists, exemplifying the can-do attitude of Dave Fishwick. The Burnley businessman with a larger than life character will share the lessons he learnt building and sustaining businesses through troubled financial times with the 400 esteemed guests at this year’s

Hull’s growing business scene is finally getting the national recognition it deserves

‘GREAT EVENING’: Hull Daily Mail editor Neil Hodgkinson is looking forward to this year’s awards night.

SUCCESS in business is not easy. Turning a small start-up with a decent idea into a growing employer needs dedication, passion, innovation, flair and a lot of hard work. Fortunately, these are attributes we seem to have in bucket-loads in East Yorkshire. This year’s wide range of nominees have grown their businesses from ideas on a notepad to companies with multi-millionpound turnovers. The business scene across the city has seen a significant up-turn with it being recognised at a national awards as the Most Enterprising Place in the UK. The Enterprising Britain Awards recognised the work of organisations to encourage the success of entrepreneurs in the city. Instead of featuring towards the bottom of the listings, as Hull has sometimes unfairly found itself, the region was recognised for the boom in new businesses innovating and developing in the area. Hull has also been named in an industry list of the best towns and cities to start a business in the country, showing the bustling environment at the moment for developing start-ups. Hull was also this year named, for the first time, on Glassdoor’s list of the Top 25 Places To Live And Work In The UK, featuring

above London, Edinburgh and Liverpool. This year the Hull Daily Mail Business Awards received more nominations than ever before, showcasing the sprawling breadth of success recognised across a wide range of industries in the region. Everything from pet food suppliers to mobile applications for healthcare have been recognised for the incredible effects these firms’ growth has had on the region’s communities. The growth of business into distinct and strong industries has seen the creation and success of separate Renewables Awards and Digital Awards in recent years, which showcased the array of talent in those fields. But that has not stopped the success of the awards, which has seen a surge in nominations across its mixture of categories. The City of Culture celebrations have seen increased visitor numbers to the city, but also an increased pressure to show how great the region is with this significant platform. With more categories up for grabs than ever before, the annual celebration next month will give businesses the chance to reflect on how great an impact they have had on the local community through their entrepreneurism and innovation.

In a short period of time the company has developed an export revenue more than £1m. Its produce is now exported from its factory near Snaith more than 30 countries across the globe. The firm recently signed distribution agreements with major distributors in Denmark, France, Greece, Italy, New Zealand, Nigeria, Norway, South Africa and South Korea, showing an established export market inside and

outside Europe. It says the plan is to “realisitically double or treble” its export turnover within the next 12 months. Burgess says it is continuing to grow their export market and are in active discussions with distributors in another five countries, and plan to launch Burgess products into these markets within three months. It says it has “embraced international business” and changed its organisational structure to focus on it, including the employment of a dedicated Export Administrator and a rebranding of all product labels to be multi-lingual. The judges said they were impressed by the significant financial growth the company has gained through its continuing emphasis on taking advantage of exporting its pet food far and wide.

GW Power has recently completed combined projects for the likes of Hobson and Porter Ltd and Stubbs Brothers Ltd, as well as the Guildhall and Sangwin Group. The firm has also said it is looking to invest a minimum of £15k on training for both office staff and engineers to improve the service it provides. It also says it strongly believes in the importance of the apprenticeship scheme and plans to employ at least one school-leaver each summer. Continued growth may see the firm open its first base outside of Hull, with plans for a Leeds branch to enable it to be competitive for contracts in West Yorkshire. Judges said that Daniel Haley’s development and growth of the company has been impressive in a short period of time, and were encouraged by the business plans to continue and develop the services that they can provide to customers.

From starting the internship she “made herself indispensable ensuring the company created a permanent role for her”. Since then she has gone on to accomplish many things for the growing C4Di-based company, which it says make her a standout candidate.
