Clee’s Vase journey began back in November when they made the journey to fellow Northern Counties East League side AFC Emley – and it almost ended there! The Owls were 1-0 down going into the final ten minutes before Jack Richardson’s equaliser, and Liam Dickens struck in the final minute to send them through to the third round. They then played host to Bootle, and it was another late show that sent them through as a Brody Robertson double in the final five minutes gave them a 2-1 victory. A 2-1 win over Billingham Town in the fourth round set up a fifth round tie against

‘The final is just what this club deserves’ A DREAM trip to Wembley is just what everyone at Cleethorpes Town deserves for their hard work. That’s according to Owls manager Marcus Newell, who will be leading his side out onto the hallowed turf on Sunday when they take on South Shields in the FA Vase Final. It’s been a remarkable few years for Newell, who has taken Clee up from the Northern Counties East League Division One to the Evo-Stik League in just four years. And, ahead of the biggest day in the club’s history, Newell has paid tribute to the club’s huge family of people who have helped build the club since their inception in 1998. “There’s good people here, lots of volunteers who do so much work, and they absolutely deserve this,” Newell told the Telegraph. “People might think it’s a cliché, but it’s not, they do work hard and they do love the club. “I can’t do what I do without everyone at this club, and it’s just a

nice place to be. “I’ve been here for four years, and I’ve maybe only had about three arguments with certain people – I don’t think that’s too bad for me!” The Owls have had to keep the thought of Wembley out of their minds in recent weeks as they completed their NCEL Premier Division title win. But now, with his side possibly just 90 minutes away from glory, Newell is brimming with excitement at the thought of climbing those famous Wembley steps. “I don’t tend to think too much about it because it’s not really my style, but it’d be something else if we won at Wembley. For a club this size, and the lads and me personally, it would be fantastic, it really would.”

ON OUR WAY: Cleethorpes Town players and supporters celebrate after reaching Wembley. Below, Owls chairman Dave Patterson (second from left) watches the team from the stands. Pictures: Duncan Young

A DAY TO REMEMBER

IT was in 1999 that Dave Patterson took his son along to play for the newly-formed Cleethorpes Town – now, just 18 years later, he’ll be sitting in the Royal Box as his side walk out onto the hallowed turf at Wembley. The Owls chairman will be just one of the many people heading to the national stadium to cheer them on in their FA Vase Final showdown with South Shields on Sunday.

When those lads walk out onto that pitch it’s going to be an emotional time for us – not just for me, but for everybody involved in the club Dave Patterson

While they haven’t had to wait too long since their inception for their first visit to the home of football, it’s certainly not been an easy road for Clee, with plenty of hard work going into their progression. And now, with his side on the

verge of the biggest game in their history, Patterson knows all that hard work was worth it. “I joined in 1999, but Tommy Watson set the club up in 98, and big respect to Tommy because without him and his input, we wouldn’t be where we are today,” Patterson told the Telegraph. “We set it up as a junior club, and we got the juniors right. We made sure they were set off on the goal of achieving what we’ve done now. “Once we got the juniors all sorted, we then looked at our senior section and got that on the road and built it up from there. “We struggled in the early days, there’s no two ways about that, but once we got it right and worked out what we needed to do and how we were going to achieve it, it just propelled itself. “We must be doing something right, because you don’t earn this amount of promotions in such a short space of time. “Our next aim is to get the facility built at the Linden Homes club and get the stadium up and running.

“We’ve got all the plans in place, it’s just a case now of getting it built, and hopefully next season we’ll have it all done and ready to have our first team back playing there.” Sunday’s game will be a unique experience for Patterson – and not just because of the magnitude of the game. The Owls chairman can usually be found in amongst the club’s supporters, kicking every ball and leading the crowd in their songs on the sidelines. But he admits he might have to tone that down slightly when he’s sitting up in the Royal Box at Wembley.

“That’s where my heart is, I like to stand with the fans and sing a few songs with them. “It’s part of me to be honest – I’m a supporter first and a chairman second. “It’s going to be different to be sat in the Royal Box, but it’s an opportunity I couldn’t miss. It’s a once in a lifetime experience, so I’m really looking forward to it. I think I’m going to have keep my mouth shut at times! “But we’re going to enjoy the day, enjoy the atmosphere, and when those lads walk out onto that pitch it’s going to be an emotional time for us – not just for me, but for everybody involved in the club.”
