WELCOME TO YOUR FESTIVAL Humber Street Sesh organiser Mark Page gets ready to celebrate the creative brilliance of the city

appy 5th Birthday to us. How did we get here? From a weekly live music night spawned a festival of epic proportions. A unique festival that celebrates the creative brilliance of the region, one that gave a city an arts identity and brought ght a sense of cultural wellbeing to Hull. It was claimed by many to be the catalyst that gave Hull its City of Culture status. A bold claim, but one that we’re happy to acknowledge humbly. Humber Street Sesh is a day where community celebrates itself in all its glory. Over 1,000 local creatives will be performing across 14 stages, with 200+ acts featured on Hull’s l’s Marina. Though the festival focuses on music, it’s embedded with art and is a powerful platform for many of our local artists. With the Fruit Market and Marina development ongoing, this year has seen us work closely with the Council and developers and we thank them for their cooperation. Leader Steve Brady and his council team have shown us great support again this year, and a special mention goes to Helen Thackeray who has helped us at every turn again this year. With 32,000 expected at our ﬁfth festival, we have to give thanks to the wonderful support we’ve received from sponsors and partners that help us stage such a big event. And, of course, we must acknowledge dge those who have helped behind the scenes.

HSS is not a fully-ﬂedged event company, it’s a company of three, myself, Dave Mays From Fruit and Justine Peacock from Prestige Support Ltd. The three of us work on the festival all year and along the way we are aided by the fabulous team behind Welly/Fruit/ Bear, and the artistic skills of Joseph Cox of H&H. Daniel Mawer who came on board last year to help with the weekly Sesh Live music night has proved an invaluable sidekick, helping us programme the

Humber Street Sesh would like to pay tribute to the late Luke Lavelle, who sadly passed away in June. Luke was a lovely guy, an unbelievable talent, and was the charismatic frontman of Lavellion, a local rock band who many thought were on the cusp of greatness a few years back. He will be sadly missed. Rest In Peace Luke.

Between these two bookmarks ,Humber Street is shaking off its dilapidated facade, new bars such as Butler Whites are taking up residence while other independent traders such as Pineapple furniture looks set to maintain the area’s quirky character. The new £700,000 Stage@ The Dock amphitheatre is read to welcome its first bums on seats and you lucky lots at the Humber Street Sesh will be among the first to experience it. Behind the main thoroughfares, 109 new one, two and three-bedroom homes are taking shape, putting in a place the foundations for a self-contained community that will help sustain the new “arts quarter” and the avalanche of cafés, bars, boutiques, shops and galleries that, if all goes according to plan, should soon start arriving. As the graffiti decorating the walls in and around the Fruit Market keep reminding us “change is happening”. It is. And we’re already starting to see what it will look like.

Eclectic ska/punk/hiphop five-piece are looking forward to topping the bill at the University of Hull stage. Hannah Robinson talks to the band

arry Burnby, Matty Dennison, Rob Green, Sam Burnham and Will Chalk are getting ready for the big one, as Counting Coins have been honoured with the University of Hull Main Stage headline slot. The ska/punk/gypsy/hiphop outﬁt that started life in 2009 have tried their best to keep the news a secret, but admittedly were rather loose-lipped. “We have so much support from friends and family that it was a loosely leaked secret,” says Will. “I think we’ve been asked to headline because of how hard we have been working,” adds Harry. “We’re continuously gigging and tour Europe, and I think Mark saw that we had really honed in on our sound. “We’ve been given the opportunity to grow and grow, and I think we’ve shown that now.” The band can’t wait to perform at HSS because it is

“unlike other festivals”. Will says: “It’s not a themed festival, which makes it different. You go to a lot of national festivals and they are tailored towards a particular genre, but Humber Street Sesh caters for almost everyone.” With the ending slot to what will, hopefully, be a bright, sunny day, the group want to let their music do the talking, but aren’t adverse to a backdrop or two. “We were looking at bringing in performers but they’re so expensive for what you get,” says Harry. “We would have to spend so much time with them as well because of the change-up in our music.” Will adds: “There are ways to ramp up the performance, we have thought about backdrops, but it’s our sound that has got us to where we are and I think that is what people want to hear.” “We don’t need gimmicks,” says Rob, “we have our sound and that is what makes our

performances so unique.” With hopes of a bouncing crowd come rain or shine, the quintet feel their music can deliver a message. “We’re fun and people can jump around,” says Harry, “but if you listen to the lyrics they do have a sociopolitical message. “Every song should have a meaning, whether it be political or from the heart – we don’t just

churn out lyrics.” Will says: “We can reveal that we will be professionally recording the Humber Street Sesh performance for YouTube perhaps.” “Although we have played around Europe and sold out gigs, it means a lot that this is a Hull crowd, and we know they are going to be a great audience,” says Rob.

SET TO IMPRESS THE HOME CROWD For the fourth year straight, Bud Sugar bring their exciting summery sounds to the Humber Street Sesh stage. Hannah Robinson catches up with the local group

hat does a band do when they’re playing Humber Street Sesh for the fourth time? Headline the Deadbod stage, that’s what. Bud Sugar will be bringing their summery sound to the throng of indie, and want to bring some excitement along, too. Singer Bacary Bax says: “Humber Street Sesh always gets bigger and better. “This festival really makes you want to impress the home crowd and to get them listening to your music. We incorporate dancers to make it that bit more exciting.” Having performed at the festival from almost its humble beginnings, Bud Sugar, who are known for their YouTube videos and even getting US citizens to speak Hull slang, believe it still has the potential to go further. “When we ﬁrst played it was just two streets big,” says Bacary. “Don’t get me wrong, people were there to see a

great festival and it was a great experience for the city, but now it could rival Leeds Festival if it tried. “If the location was moved to a bigger or less residential site, there is no reason why we couldn’t bring bigger names and crowds to this authentic grass roots festival.” With a new EP currently on the horizon, the band have spent the summer in the US and raising funds for a community Slip’n’Slide event outside St Stephen’s shopping centre. But the main excitement for the year has been Sesh. “It really is the highlight of the year for local bands,” Bacary says.

We have a lot of friends performing as well so it’s a great day for everyone.” But this year looks set to be Bud Sugar at last years Slip’n’Slide evnts outside St Stephen’s Shopping Centre.

hey are a band heralded by BBC 6 Music’s Steve Lamacq, Radio 1’s Huw Stevens and Annie Mac – and they’ve got their ﬁrst headline slot at Humber Street Sesh. Taking on the Alternative Main Stage – rebranded the BBC Introducing Stage for this year – Life can’t wait for their performance. “You can really tell this festival is community-based because everyone is in it together,” says frontman Mez Green. “Nobody cares who is on at what time or whether someone is headlining. Don’t get me wrong, it is very humbling to be asked to headline and it means loads to us, but we would open the festival if we were asked. “We just love the atmosphere and love playing there.” Having performed at last year’s Leeds and Reading Festival and continuously touring around the UK, Life

have managed to make a name for themselves as one of the rising bands to come out of Hull. Mez says: “If you look at other festivals we’ve played such as Live @ Leeds, they all have their roots at where Humber Street Sesh is now. “They all started out as a similar vibe and I think it has the potential to be huge and get some international acts involved. “The festival will grow and grow, and people will see in a couple of years just how great it has become.” With new material having recently been released, the group will be performing this alongside their back catalogue on a stage they feel is appropriate for them to play. “We’re so happy it’s the BBC Introducing stage because we have worked so closely with them over the years,” says Mez. “It will be great to celebrate their achievements and we will be playing for them. “Last year, the audiences were out listening to music in the pouring rain, so we’re sure the crowds will be just as great this year. I’ll be there from as soon as it opens to catch all the music.”

his year’s opening slot will be given to the winner of the Battle Of The Bands, a sister competition to the Mail’s Star Search competition. With a chance to appear on the University of Hull main stage as the festival gets underway, the winning group will also win £500, a top spot at the upcoming Tribfest, promotional photos, studio time and a CD. Vicky Norman, organiser of the Star Search competition, says: “We hold a competition for singers and duos with musical accompaniments, and we have our ever-popular Junior Star Search, but we realised we needed something to

incorporate all the great bands in the city. “Humber Street Sesh is a great platform for any band, so to be voted onto it is amazing for the winner. As will a chance to perform at Tribfest later on in the year. “As with the main Star Search competition, the winning band will be given promotional photographs by Fotoworx and recording time at Element Studios. They will also get to perform at the Hull City Hull this month for the Star Search 2016 final.” The first heat was held at The New Griffin in Anlaby in Wednesday, July 6, with bands showing great promise to get the festival going.

ARE YOU READY TO ROCK?

They might be too heavy for the main stage but Three Day Millionaires will celebrate their anniversary headlining the Rock stage this year. Hannah Robinson finds out more

ot many bands can say a city-wide festival was the scene of their ﬁrst gig, but for Three Day Millionaires, they will be celebrating their two-year anniversary with a headlining slot. Set to take on the Rock Warehouse stage, the quartet will be capping off the day after performances from Battalions and Liberatae Mae - and they can’t wait. “We’re too heavy for the main stage, so being able to headline the Rock Warehouse is ideal for us,” says frontman Daniel Harrison. “We got the gig after performing at The Polar Bear with Battalions, and we’ve had to keep it quiet ever since.” They might only have been on the city circuit for two years, but the band have already started to see success with more than their music. Daniel says: “We have set up an online merch store that has gone so much better than we expected. We supported Norma Jean at O’Riley’s a couple of weeks ago and I think we took

HUMBER STREET SESH IS A GREAT FESTIVAL FOR BANDS LIKE US, WHO ARE SELF-MADE AND DO IT FOR FUN about £170. “We only sell T-shirts and lighters!” But the group have got plans ahead of their headlining debut. “We have just recorded two new songs, which we will be playing at Sesh,” says Daniel, “and we were lucky enough to have Pat Pretorious, of The Talks, produce them for us. “We can’t wait for people to hear them. “But we’re also looking at getting radio play on stations like Kerrang!. We all work so much that it’s hard for us to gig outside of Hull.” But that is no bad thing for the band, who are no strangers to the Rock Warehouse. “We played the Rock Warehouse last year and suddenly loads of people came into the tent when we were on,” says Daniel, “but then we realised it was raining outside.

“But that’s the great thing about festivals, people who might never have heard your music can walk in and like what they hear. “I know I’m excited to see Liberate Mae and Dividium play, and I’ll deﬁnitely be having a wander around the breakdancing bit. “Humber Street Sesh is a great festival for bands like us, who are self-made and do it for fun. It shows people you don’t have to sound like JLS to get a headline slot. “It’s got all the potential to become a festival like Slamdunk in Leeds, where we can get some really big names coming in to the city. “But, more importantly, it is a really great platform for local performers. Hull is a leaking tap of talent and we need to show that off.”

The Residents Association is a night in Hull at the Adelphi, on the last Friday of the month. WHAT POTENTIAL DO O YOU THINK IT HAS?

IN TOO DEEP ... ROCKERS LOOK FORWARD TO A DAY FULL OF TALENT They’ve just released a new album and now they’re returning to Humber Street Sesh, the Ming City Rockers chat with Hannah Robinson

here’s a band from Immingham some of you may have heard of, and they keep coming back for more. Ming City Rockers, a quartet consisting of Clancey Jones, Morley Adams, Ramona Rae and Wan Marshall, have been featured in Q Magazine since their debut album was released in 2013, and now they’re performing at HSS. “Humber Street Sesh is a really fun gig,” says frontman Clancey. “I like playing Hull it’s a great audience. It’s what keeps us

coming back.” With a new album, Lemon, just released, and a music video soon to follow, the rockers have a respect for the Hull Marina event. Clancey says: “The difference between this festival and others is the talent. “There’s loads of really great bands and artists. You ﬁnd you go to festivals and you end up having to listen to rubbish, but everyone is good here. “The tickets are really cheap as well for what you get.” The group will be catching up

on the city’s talent before their headline slot on The Deep Stage, especially Young Jack. “We’ve played with Young Jack a few times and they’re a great band to go see,” says Clancey. “I could carry on naming people because there are so many great bands.” In previous years, the musical outﬁt have performed in Fruit and on the main stage, but this year they’re hoping the audience is just as good as always. “We loved playing the Fruit stage because it was full of people and a great atmosphere,” says Clancey. “We’re sure this year people will have just as much fun, though.”

Dan says: â&#x20AC;&#x153;We were offered DJ work in various bars and clubs over the years, but they wanted us to play almost to a playlist. If we couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t use DJing to express ourselves and share our musical discoveries then we were not interested. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are lucky enough to run our own night called The ITCH, which takes place at Thieving Harryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s on Humber Street â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a Fifties and Sixties vibe playing rockâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;nâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;roll all on original 7in vinyl.â&#x20AC;? Wanting to bring something new to the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s table, Mark and Dan feel they have put Hull on the map in their own small way. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our goal when we set up the ITCH was to put on a night for music that we felt wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t being

catered for locally,” says Dan. “We wanted a night that would be of a national standard and recognised as such. We also wanted to help to put Hull on the map and in our own small way we have done exactly that.” Playing everything on original press 45rpm records, many of them extremely rarer, the brothers say people with a passion for music travel to hear them, with many punters coming regularly from Manchester, Shefﬁeld and London. Dan says: “This will be the third year we have been involved in HSS, with the ﬁrst year putting on a warehouse part with a live art installation. “We have invited local record collector friends to come and

play sets throughout the day. Some of whom who run their own club nights, such as Pete from the Onion Club and Jake from Champion Sounds, and some of whom who rarely get the chance to DJ but we know have great taste in music and have been collecting record for many years. “We wanted to keep it interesting and play a selection of music all day long that appeals to all age groups but you maybe don’t get a chance to hear in other pubs and clubs across the City. “This is one of the things we love about HSS. The creative side of our city gets exposed to a much wider audience than usual all in a fantastic setting with a fantastic atmosphere.”

Homegrown talent will feature alongside a number of outstanding national artists to celebrate the full cultural spectrum of Hip Hop, including Rap, DJ battles, live funk bands with the visual accompaniment grafﬁti, and Bboys (break of live grafﬁti, dancers) at the brand new Stage@TheDock as part of the Humber Street Sesh. The line-up features some of Hull’s premier rap talent including Redeye, Playa One, Chiedu Oraka, Deezkid, Live Lans, Clarksman, Chappo and Marx coming through to rock the mic alongside the likes of Tony Broke (Blah Records) and King Ubu (Scotland). The emphasis is on celebrating Hip Hop at its roots and this includes representing the Funk genre, with headliners Pearl’s Cab Ride and the inclusion of The Floor Rippers Band. Altu ‘Flowrex’ Collingwood, Hull local, Head of the Universal Zulu Nation in the UK and curator of the line-up said: “In Hip Hop’s beginings we look to legendary events such as DJ Kool Herc’s famous Back to School Jam (August 11th 1973, at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue, the Bronx, NY.

In 2015, at the tender age of 18, Fronteers had already managed to tour the UK in their ﬁrst year as a band. After a glowing press reception of singles such as ‘Up To Me Now’ (NME describing it as ‘Gallagher-esque’) the band showcased their 60s inspired Beatles-esque pop songs across England whilst touring with bands such as Blossoms and Pretty Vicious.

Over the past couple of years, the four-piece indie group have received airplay for four separate tracks on BBC Radio 1 including an on-air interview with Fearne Cotton, plus their singles played on BBC 6Music. They’ve shared stages with Foals, The 1975, The Pigeon Detectives, Little Comets, Skaters and We Were Promised Jetpacks. This year, the band played headline shows across the UK as they promoted their debut EP, their hometown leg of the tour was at Fruit and completely sold out.

Arguably the loudest band to

exist in Hull, No Nothings have made a name for themselves as underground pioneers of garage rock, playing key gigs across the country as well as being one of the few new Hull acts to venture into Europe. Their debut 12” record is to be released via a label with Hull links, ‘I’m not from London’ on the July 22, and will see the band smash a UK tour as well as another trip through Europe after their headline set at this year’s Humber Street Sesh.

Daniel Mawer looks at the weekly Sesh live music night and the impact it’s had on Hull’s music scene

ow into its fourteenth year, The Sesh is one of Hull’s longest reigning music nights, providing a spotlight for local and national unrecognised talent, all for free entry, every Tuesday night at The Polar Bear. The night hosts over one hundred artists a year from across the country, connecting Hull with music scenes nationwide. Since its inception, Mark Page has compered the evening, introducing the artists and playing local music in between the acts, Each week ‘Mak’ collates hundreds of photos saved up from Sesh’s past and present along with posters of events happening across the city, projecting them onto the back walls of the stage as well as the Polar Bear TV screens to be seen throughout the night. The Sesh was born at The Linnet and Lark in 2002, at a time when only The Adelphi Club offered regular support for local artists. Linnet DJ Mark Page decided to create a much needed regular platform for local bands to play. His new weekly music night grew into a community for musicians, photographers,

BANDS LIKE THE PADDINGTONS, THE TALKS AND FONDA 500 ARE ALL EXAMPLES OF ARTISTS IN HULL’S MUSIC SCENE THAT MADE SESH THEIR HOME journalists, ﬁlm makers and music enthusiasts to socialise and meet up every Tuesday. Bands like The Paddingtons, The Talks and Fonda 500 are all examples of artists in Hull’s music scene folklore that made the Sesh their home. In the mid noughties, the weekly night would be packed with indie kids ready to lap up their local heroes, before going onto the Sesh after party’s until the early hours. As indie guitars moved out of fashion at the turn of the decade, The Sesh continued to survive as a platform for artists of all genres. For its tenth year, Mak decided to celebrate The Sesh’s legacy with ‘The Humber Street Sesh’, a celebration of old and new friends that had featured at the night over the past decade. The overwhelming success and attendance for the event, for what was planned to only be a small celebration of The Sesh’s legacy fed people’s appetite for a yearly festival. The Fruit and Welly Venues teams were instrumental in helping the festival develop year after year and when The Linnet and Lark changed long term management and rebranded, it made perfect sense for the Sesh to move to Welly and Fruit’s newly owned Polar Bear Pub to continue working with the festival partners, making a new home of a venue with a longstanding history for live music.

SquareWaves is back at Sesh with electronic music for all tastes, writes Joe Cox

ull can lay claim to being a massive influence on the history of alternative electronic music. Experimental electronic pioneers Throbbing Gristle formed in Hull in the 1970s and had their studio in the Fruit Market. They were pioneers of the industrial genre and would go on to influence masses, from Aphex Twin to Nine Inch Nails, My Bloody Valentine to Swans. SquareWaves is a celebration of left-field electronic thinkers like this. From Industrial to ambient, jazz and techno, electronic music is internationally

popular, but musicians can find it difficult to break out of their bedroom studios or find a place on local live music scenes in the early days. In Hull, this kind of music is going on all over the city. Find it in home studios, on Love Our Records, at performances at Ground Gallery, or acts on Tegleg, Mola Mola, the Adult Teeth Recording Company and more. We set out to join the dots between the different acts, labels and promoters, creating a network where electronic musicians can discover and support each other.

We started with the SquareWaves compilation in 2014, which brought together producers and was sold to raise money for RED Gallery, which had lost its funding. We went down to Fruit a couple of days after the release for Something Entirely Different’s Art and Beer night. We’re excited to be sharing a space with them again at Humber Street Sesh 2016. There, acts from the compilation release played an improvised set of electronic music together. Many of us hadn’t even met before, musicians dropped in and out of the mix, sometimes just two were playing, other times all ﬁve. It worked fantastically. SquareWaves acts have been jamming monthly ever since, with shifting lineups introducing new artists along the way. All jams are recorded, with the best cuts going online to create a collection of improvised electronic music, accessible for free. Members of the collective have now supported international artists in the

city, collaborated on new projects, formed new bands and discovered new opportunities, often through our Sonic Social gatherings at Adelphi and other events we’re put on. More recently, we’ve teamed up with Hull Uni and played with their students as part of their degrees, and brought Mexican live-coders Reggaetron to do a show like Adelphi crowds have never seen before. Visitors to our tent can expect our Humber Street Sesh line-up to be bigger and better than ever. We’ve managed to get big acts we never thought we would from outside of Hull, and incredible homegrown talents who have never played a festival before. The Speakeasy stage wants to show off what the city has to offer. Hannah Robinson talks with organiser Adam Brodie to find out more about the unsigned acts taking to the stage

ith Humber Street’s regeneration well underway, Speakeasy are utilising the new spaces for their stage this year. Set up by Adam Brodie and Jody McKenna, Speakeasy hosts weekly music events in the city and also spreads its wings to the outreaches of York, Leeds and beyond, bringing unsigned acts to a higher platform. Now taking over the new Butler & Whites for this year’s festival, Adam wants to show off what the city has to offer. “We will be bringing some out of town acts to the festival, because music is all about networking, and we want to forge relationships with other

major Northern cities,” he says. “You could say we want to use it as an advert for the city’s music scene, but we want these artists to go back to their home cities singing Hull’s praises.” With a line-up consisting of local favourites Jack Conman, pictured left, and Emily Moulton, it will be an “out-of-towner” headlining the Speakeasy stage. “Fraser Anderson is incredible,” says Adam. “He’s brilliant and I would recommend people come and see him. He’s based in Bristol and has built up a huge fanbase.” But Adam believes we need more than a yearly advertisement of Hull’s

blossoming music scene to sustain what is already a strained effort. He says: “What Warren Records and Mark Page do for this city is incredible. I think without them, 90 per cent of the city’s bands wouldn’t have the audience they do. “But these guys get nothing in return for their efforts in the realms of money and profit, and we need to get some sponsorship to keep festivals and events like this going before they decide they are not worth doing anymore. “Humber Street Sesh does have the potential to be huge, I think it already rivals Tramlines in Sheffield, but we need to protect the cornerstones of Hull’s music scene first. “I think we do need national attention in order to get national sponsorship, but that is so the Hull bands and artists that work

hard enough can be given so much more of a platform.” While Adam believes artists shouldn’t be “spoonfed” in regards to being given support and opportunities, he is not adverse to the idea of a two-day Humber Street Sesh to provide support in the city. “I think it would bring a lot to the city in regards to visitors needing accommodation and places to eat and drink,” he says. “But we do need to secure a good future for our music ﬁrst. We need more diversity with urban acts and women being given a greater chance to get into music. “We as a city need to support organisers like Mark and get more involved in the city’s music scene before it is too late.”

Usually minimalistic guitars are not intricate – the subtlety in Alice Clayton’s music however is wonderfully telling, allowing the vocals, which have an intensity to them, to come through.

An alternative rock band from Castleford – hyped for strong tracks with plenty off fuzz creating a well managed contrast between the vocals and guitars, using quiet and loud together expertly.

With fret board sliding used in her music almost like punctuation, the sound that comes from her songs is organic and natural, seeming build and grow with its own will.

A variety of styles (all well written) graces Mr Sneaks’ musical repertoire, with a musical ability to write anything, and still have it sound and feel authentic and by lyrically valuable.

Bringing their alternative country-folk music, Mulholland bring together a traditional feel instrumentally alongside more playful and fast melody and lyrics to put together something that is eerie and beautiful all the same.

Another young musician having come through on displaying an outstanding song writing ability and skill with not just composition but also holding an audience.

Having been described as postindie, the Scunthorpe band’s full sound has gathered a lot of attention quickly, amongst critical acclaim for their tracks visibly blending inﬂuences from both post-punk and alternative rock.

Vocals are heavy against a back drop of more minimal chord orientated guitar, her tracks are melodious and polished from many gigs.

With melodic indie pop being their chosen forte, they’ve been writing impressive tracks for the last few years with jangly guitars and soft harmonic vocals making an impressively full sound.

You’ve most likely seen him hosting the main stage last year and now he returns with the penultimate set on the Dead Bod stage, bringing his lyrically savvy light hip hop/ rap.

Garage rock put together brilliantly well, alongside ever solid stage shows. Two things link all the acts on this stage: speed and heaviness – and No Nothings are short on neither.

Rough vocals provide an exciting feel to their tacks, alongside a lot of constantly moving guitar – ever present are melody upon melody, the layers in their music is impressive and allows them to have a consuming size.

Melody driven rhythmic tracks in which vocals take precedent, allowing for a balance between light and heavy throughout the songs – managing to go from one to the other in seconds.

Somber, driven, slow music that builds over time, making it feel poignant and full. Astoundingly big sound created with lots of atmosphere and feeling in every note, soft vocals help to only encourage this.

With lots of melody coming from the guitars, their work is heavily intricate. Coupled perfectly with a unique vocal style and pattern that is somewhat rougher but works brilliantly well.

Usually forming part of Endoﬂevelbaddie, Playa One returns after a headline slot last year with a solo set. Upbeat and relentless, sets are built around intensity.

Intricate electronic beats accompanying sweet vocals the downbeat tones have a sense of intangible mystery and darkness within the catchy tracks that the pop duo put together.

Acoustic based blues band with melodious harmonious vocals alongside a myriad of guitars and a little percussion. Their tracks are well written pieces, with everything tied together entirely.

A skilful guitarist and singer, seemingly able to turn her hand to any cover and do it well. Balanced between the guitar and vocals each song is composed well and transposed acoustically seemingly with ease.

Absolutely in your face heavy punk that doesn’t let up whatsoever. Drifting from aggressively fast parts, into shortlived breakdowns and back again with ease they are immensely skilful and write well.

Distant dark drum beats accompany synth to create a vibrant building sound, that slowly becomes something else. Strong composition means their tracks start seemingly from nothing and build upwards, to a crescendo.

Slightly punk, slightly rock, slightly stoner, Serial Chiller’s laid back style and clever lyrical pieces alongside rough, untamed guitars and the simplicity of only an accompanying drum kit create impressive tracks.

With a hint of psychadelia and a heap of garage rock Shivering Wave’s reﬁned and chaotic sound which runs freely into screaming solos and a variety of different songs easily, even within just one track.

Bass driven, using negative composition to make tracks that stand out – partly because of a slight roughness and partly through their ease when it comes to changing their style so quickly.

Built as a project by singer/ songwriter Mark Rowland taking inﬂuences from and imitating styles like funk, reggae, hip hop, pop and rock throughout the set.

A mixture of reggae, dub, hip hop, jungle and bass chosen and brought together in an entertaining and big set.

With their ﬁrst demo dropping four months ago they’ve quickly carved themselves a place with heavy guitars and vocals at odds with each other, both brought together by the drums.

Opening the stage is the highly rated electronic collaborative effort which works through experimental improvisation between the pretty much huge group. No set is the same, each becoming its own session.

Hypnotic sounds blending a near electronica structuring with guitars and vocals that are near ethereal for something special – their reﬁnement is something special and simplistic all at the same time.

Ambient electronic music, building slow progressions over time to create great power in the music’s scope and largeness. Allowing it to breathe through an emptiness of space grants this cinematic soundscape to come through.

Soulful, fulﬁlling sets drip from the records played, relaxed and still interesting, you could while away hours without even realising with the sweet tones from a Stevie Wonders set.

street urchin Coming from their roots as a folk band they’ve now turned their hand to indie rock/ punk song writing with lots of melody and vocals that go along with that in harmony.

thee deadtime philharmonic Their music is soulful and dark all at once, lyrically driven to the point that it’s near poetry. Much of the sound comes from the brass accompanying, giving something broad and brilliant.

Folk inﬂuenced, played with a band to create a full sound that pulls you in with ease and doesn’t allow you to go. Lyrics are simple and keep the rhythm well alongside an instrument driven sound.

Long being one of the most impressive folk musicians in Hull, Skelly’s music has brought him much acclaim with its close to bittersweet tone and an enormous rate of production.

Urban old school RnB brought together in an ever expansive set of soulful choice tracks alongside classics.

High speeds dominate their music, alongside sharp guitar tones from the two guitarists that play together in supreme coordination and ability. The kit matches this, and helps bring it all together with the vocals.

Coming from two Hull-based singer songwriters, one a bassist and one a guitarist their music is considered and mature – the riffs are organically placed alongside the vocals.

White Orchid

Part of a new wave of post punk, bringing heavy soundscapes into a continuous set with plenty of heft. They have quickly become a force not just in Hull, and you can see why.

Alternative rock that is light and wavy, tracks have lots of movement alongside the strong vocal presence and instruments that seem to work in close harmony, never against each other.

Hints of post punk surround their song writing structure and style, especially the sharp attacking guitars which give way to softer, non-aggressive vocals to create a simple rock sound.

Heavy hitting traditionalist rock sounds, alongside strong vocals with a set full of well written, well composed tracks designed specially to entertain.

This four piece based in Leeds putting together very heavy psych rock, alongside shows that are full of energy and attack the audience, ensuring there is no simple nodding along to their sets.

Two thirds of the three piece Crooked Weather return for their second set of the day. Acoustic, folk orientated and soulful.

Electronic with a near post rock feel, Worriedaboutsatan’s set will undoubtedly be one of the highlights of the day, ﬁnishing off the Squarewaves stage in an avant-garde ambience ﬁlled fashion.

Writing pop tracks, with a little folk and acoustic inﬂuence her music is a blend of many different things, whilst her live performance ability truly is something.

Lots of guitar accompanies the Lincolnshire four piece’s pristine stage show, polished to be aggressive and hard hitting with a sound that always has something going on, and has no lull and no ﬁller.

Young Jack Intricate guitars are the staple of their sound, alongside lyrical play to create a light sound somewhere between pop, rock and indie, with well thought out composition and easy to get into tracks.
