T

he finalists for the 2018 Hull Daily Mail Business Awards have been revealed. Judges faced the difficult task of examining almost 100 entries, before deciding on the final two or three businesses in each of the 15 categories up for grabs this year. The stage is now set for the awards ceremony, which will take place at Hull’s DoubleTree by Hilton on November 15. The night will also reveal the recipient of this year’s Lifetime Contribution Award. Judges of the awards said: “The standard of entries this year was

incredibly high and, in some categories, it was almost impossible to select two or three finalists. “The variety of businesses that have entered this year’s awards simply go to show what an incredible array of talent Hull and East Yorkshire has on offer. “To be shortlisted as a finalist for any of these awards is a huge achievement, and we wish you luck on November 15.” Leading businesses for this year’s awards include smart city pioneers Connexin, renewables company Pure Renewables, and leading Hull name Sonoco Trident – all of which are up for two awards.

Some of the region’s biggest businesses have made the finalists shortlist, including caravan manufacturer Willerby, food producer Cranswick and contact centre ResQ. The awards also provide a perfect stage for pioneering entrepreneurs and innovative SMEs, as the night celebrates the talent on show across East Yorkshire. There is a nomination this year for the eagerly anticipated wearable tech Moodbeam project, as Beverley Motor Works also returns in a bid to retain the Customer Focus Award it won last year. Neil Hodgkinson, editor of the Hull Daily Mail, said: “It’s that time of year

again where we provide the biggest regional platform for local businesses to show their excellence as a company and the strength of their staff. “The depth and variety of businesses across in Hull and the East Riding never ceases to amaze me and there is no doubt that the event can provide amazing moments that make you feel both proud and, at times, quite emotional at what some companies and individuals have achieved.” ■ Tickets are now on sale for the awards, priced at £75 per head and £700 for a table. t’s been a truly remarkable year for businesses across Hull and the East Riding. The region’s digital and renewable sectors are continuing to impress audiences on a national and international scale, as Hull strives to bang the drum on the back of the unforgettable UK City of Culture year in 2017. Digital businesses in Hull now employ more than 4,000 people, turning over in excess of £500m every year. The sector has grown by 15 per cent since 2014, as powerhouses such as KCOM,

Connexin, Ron Dearing UTC and C4DI continue to innovative and provide a glimpse into the future. Sean Royce, KCOM’s executive vicepresident, said Tech Nation’s survey shows Hull is increasingly a force to be reckoned with in the UK’s vibrant tech economy. He said: “What Tech Nation 2018 shows is that Hull really is a brilliant place to be for tech and digital businesses. “From innovative start-ups to established world leaders we have the digital ecosystem in place to make sure tech industry here is flourishing. This can only be a good thing as

ith the finalists for the 2018 Hull Daily Mail Business Awards having now been announced, the countdown is well and truly on for November 15. For shortlisted businesses, a nervous six weeks of waiting to discover whether they will take home the trophy for their respective award must now begin. For everyone else, the awards ceremony is a chance to celebrate the outstanding achievements of Hull and East Riding’s business community. Hull Daily Mail editor Neil Hodgkinson said the awards never fail to “provide amazing moments.” He said: “It’s that time of year again where we provide the biggest regional platform for local businesses to show their excellence as a company and the strength of their staff. “The depth and variety of businesses across in Hull and East Riding never ceases to amaze me and there is no doubt that the event can provide amazing moments that make you feel both proud and, at

times, quite emotional at what some companies and individuals have achieved. “And it makes you feel proud when you reflect on the superb skills and talent that so many business possess, nurture and let loose to the benefit of the local economy. “There is still an air of uncertainty in the business world, mostly down to the failure of all politicians across all colours to put their own interests to one side and work together to deliver the best Brexit deal for the country.” Mr Hodgkinson said the high volume of companies and business leaders “makes you confident that this region is ready to make the best of whatever happens.” “These awards just get bigger and better as do the quality and quantity of entries,” he said. “The best thing about them is that they highlight the tremendous amount of hard work, determination and talent that goes on locally to make sure we have a thriving business economy. “There are some great businesses in our region and some brilliant

individuals and we hope to highlight them in November. It is always a night to look forward to.” It has been 16 years since the launch of the Hull Daily Mail’s Business Awards. Over the years, businesses of all shapes and sizes, from every different sector imaginable, have walked away with coveted trophies. Commenting on this year’s awards, Hull Daily Mail managing director Mike Pennington said: “Following the success of last year’s awards, I am delighted that the 2018 Business Awards are a sell out yet again for November. “Of course I am grateful again for the support of our sponsors, old and new, and I am sure the night will yet again reflect the mood of the city with its thriving business community, with the winners and nominees reflecting another year of great business growth and prospect for our region. “I look forward to welcoming everyone to the new venue – the DoubleTree by Hilton in November. “Good luck to everyone who enters these prestigious awards.”

Hull Daily Mail editor Neil Hodgkinson

Hull reinvents itself as a 21st-century city.” For anyone involved in business across Hull, East Yorkshire and the Humber region, the growing reputation of the renewables sector will come as no surprise. Countries across the globe are casting envious eyes on the region, as the likes of Siemens Gamesa and Orsted, supported by an array of world-class SMEs and historic Hull businesses, continue to show how it is done. Another thing that will come as no surprise is diversity of the region’s businesses.

Last year’s Hull Daily Mail Business Awards at the KCOM stadium Picture: Richard Addison Companies from across Hull and the East Riding continue to hold their own as leaders in their industries – be it food, manufacturing, construction, law, technology or retail. The three judges of this year’s awards, FEO’s Jan Brumby, Gosschalks’ Simon Lunt and KCOM’s Mike Davies, emphasised the point. They said: “The variety of businesses that have entered this year’s awards simply go to show what an incredible array of talent Hull and East Yorkshire has on offer.” Major developments are also in the pipeline for Hull. RB is set to unveil its new R&D centre later this year, and the Energy Works will create new employment opportunities when it gets up and running in 2019. ABP’s new 453-acre Humber International Enterprise Park has also moved a step closer, as members of the public have been invited to view and comment on the proposals. It is one of the largest port development RB is set to unveil its new R&D centre later this year

sites in the UK and has the potential to attract major distribution and manufacturing operators that will create significant employment and inward investment for the region. ABP Humber head of property, David Morriss, said: “It’s important we work hand-in-hand with the local community and offer an opportunity for them to be able to shape and influence the design of this major development site. “We’re currently in early conversations with major occupiers that could potentially transform this into the most significant distribution and manufacturing hub in the North of England.” Hull’s docks also provided a nostalgic flashback to the booming fishing days of old last month, when the Kirkella became the first trawler to land fish in the city for more than a decade. There are still some things which are unclear though. As the Northern Powerhouse vision progresses, Hull still appears to be working

out exactly how it will fit into the new landscape. Recent months have seen visits to the city from both Northern Powerhouse minister Jake Berry and Transport for the North boss Barry White. Both talked about the city and region’s crucial role in driving the north’s economy, but questions are still being asked of East Yorkshire’s major infrastructure routes. When the last Business Awards were held, Hull was still basking in the 2017 City of Culture celebrations. Concerns were raised that, once the curtain had dropped on the year, Hull would return to its portrayed slumber, and the media’s gaze would drift away. Hull’s business community has rallied in spectacular fashion, however. Truly outstanding work is being done across the region every single day, and as inventions and innovations continue to reach new heights, Hull deserves its time in the spotlight to continue well into the future.

Ant Middleton

Gripping story from real-life action man MASTER OF SURVIVAL KEYNOTE SPEAKER AT AWARDS

B

est-known for his role as chief instructor on hit Channel Four show SAS: Who Dares Wins, Ant Middleton has become a much-loved and admired master of survival on and off-screen. Spurred on by his formidable career in the UK’s elite forces, including the Marines, Nine Parachute Squadron and Special Boat Service, Ant’s impressive military history led to a successful launch into the world of television. Joining the Armed Forces at the age of 16, Ant quickly impressed with his determination, skill and grit. He went on to join the Royal Marines, Nine Parachute

Squadron Royal Engineers and then the Special Boat Service (SBS), sister unit of the SAS, in 2008 where he spent four years. Continuing to excel, Ant earned the position of a point man /lead scout, as well as a primary fires operator and sniper, before eventually earning a place in the UK Special Forces Selection. Having achieved the “holy trinity” of the UK’s Elite Forces, Ant’s career took a different direction when he left the SAS and embarked on a career in security looking after VIPs. From there, he operated as a security expert in South Africa

and various other countries for West African governments. His impressive body of work, including training presidential security teams and running SAS-style corporate events, eventually led him to embark on a career in television, which continues to flourish. With an insatiable appetite for adventure, 2017 saw Ant front the incredibly well-received Mutiny on Channel Four – a show that re-enacted Captain William Bligh’s infamous 3,500-nautical mile voyage in a small vessel following his crew’s mutiny. The programme saw Ant captain a crew of 18, replicating the loyalists who were also thrown off the HMS Bounty by mutineers,

and take on the same physically strenuous and challenging voyage as Bligh did in 1789. Ant has also fronted Channel Four’s survivalist programme Escape, centred on placing skilled engineers in precarious situations;

the teams must use their skills to escape their predicament and get to safety. Ant’s story promises to be one not to be missed, and is certain to grip the audience at this year’s Business Awards.

SONOCO TRIDENT

WILLERBY

Long-standing staff Ensuring training is a a testament to firm core part of business W

illerby is the UK’s largest park homes and lodges manufacturer, and has had its roots planted in Hull since 1946. The company has created 200 jobs in Hull in the past two years and has seen its revenue grow from £147m in 2016 to £166m last year. Willerby recognises the importance of retaining talent within the business. Over 90 per cent of the production senior management team have grown with the company, and 20 per cent of the workforce are currently in formal training. More than 120 employees are also undertaking leadership training, as Willerby keeps its sights firmly fixed on the future of the business. The number of long-standing staff

members is a testament to any company, and, at Willerby, this is no different. Fifteen per cent of staff have been with the company for more than ten years, with one employee, Ian Wilson, recently celebrating a staggering 40 years at the business. Apprenticeships are a core part of Willerby’s business model. With 22 in the current intake, previous years have seen a 100 per cent transition rate into full-time employment. Many of the team leaders at Willerby have worked their way through the ranks, and are now mentoring the next generation. The numbers make for impressive reading, and Willerby a worthy finalist in the Training and Development category.

S

onoco Trident was founded in Hull in 1993 with just five people. Today, it employs more than 740 people across the world. The business said since the inception of its training department more than a decade ago, it had been “striving towards and succeeded in growing a wealth of homegrown talent”. Trident has recently invested in new training facilities, to support the development of staff as the

business continues its growth. In 2018, nine apprentices completed their programmes with the company, and secured permanent contracts in the process. There are currently six apprentices and seven university placements in position for the 2018-19 year. Trident has also cast its net wider than Hull. In 2016, the business opened offices in Chennai, India, and seeks to employ local talent using learning content from Hull.

Directors and managers of Trident in the US, Singapore and Australia are all originally from Hull – showing the progression available within the business. Trident said its vision is “to be a company that our people love to work for, and our clients love to work with”. The business also employs more than 20 in-team coaches, who support learning and development within the company and ensure training remains a core part of Trident.

SUPPORTING RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT LAST November saw her Majesty the Queen officially open the University of Hull’s new £28m health campus. The centre aims to provide some of the best medical training facilities in the UK. The exciting development at the university came hot on the heels of the £28m Brynmor Jones Library refurbishment, the £30m new

on-campus residences and the £9.5m refurbishment of Middleton Hall. The University of Hull returns this year to sponsor the Training and Development category at the 2018 Hull Daily Mail Business Awards, as the higher education provider continues to be economic driver for the region. The university supports businesses to innovate and grow by supporting the

research and development process with its many experts. The Enterprise Centre has also helped scores of businesses get their visions off the ground. Since it was established in 2008, the centre has helped more than 150 businesses to succeed. The university is also supporting Aura with funding for its new £12m renewable energy innovation centre near Hessle.

EXPORTER OF THE YEAR

REFLEX DATA SYSTEMS

BIO-D

Textiles firm secures Combining sectors to overseas customers make winning formula

F

amous in the world of textiles, although not quite so well known in Hull, is Reflex Data Systems. The company’s Mertex product is a behind-the-scenes star for many household names in the soft furnishings industry. Having worked with names such as Sanderson, Designers Guild, Harlequin and Zoffany, the company realised ten years ago they had nearly exhausted the UK market, and growth would have to come from overseas. From 2016 to 2018, contribution from export sales had increased from 13 per cent to an expected 22 per cent this year. In the current financial year, Reflex is already delivering 17 per cent in export

sales of the budgeted turnover figure of £3.3m. Since 2013, Reflex has secured a total of 11 new contracts – six of which are with overseas customers in the US, France and Australia. Reflex’s plunge into the export market has allowed the company to grow at an impressive rate. In 2013, the company employed 25 people at its Beverley office. A year later, to support growth, Reflex moved to Priory Park in Hull, and today has 43 staff and is recruiting for roles of all levels. Reflex has also secured a New York office and has taken on an American agent.

B

io-D has combined the exports and eco-friendly sectors to create a winning formula in recent years. Based in Bergen Way, Hull, the cleaning product manufacturer produces more than 20 product lines, specialising in items such as washing-up liquid and floor cleaner. The firm began exporting in 2005 and now exports to almost 20 countries, including China, Russia, Taiwan and South Korea. Bio-D last year recorded a 30 per cent increase across all international markets. It has become a major player in China, and the Hull company’s products can be found in some of the country’s biggest department stores.

Managing director Lloyd Atkin said: “Historically, China has lagged behind other countries in terms of its interest and investment in environmental matters; we’re now seeing rapid growth as the country catches up. “We’re leading the eco cleaning industry over there. While consumer demand for greener alternatives is growing, there are still very few producers making products like ours that are natural, hypoallergenic, cruelty free and vegan friendly.” Earlier this year, Bio-D introduced new packaging made entirely from postconsumer waste. The firm hopes the introduction of the new packaging might encourage other brands to follow its lead.

‘AWARD HIGHLIGHTS REGION’S ENTREPRENEURIAL FLAIR’ THE UK ports industry is the largest in Europe and its operations provide critical economic infrastructure for the nation’s manufacturers and businesses. ABP is the UK’s leading port operator, with a unique network of 21 ports across England, Scotland and Wales. The Humber ports – the UK’s largest port complex – is made up of Hull, Goole, Grimsby and Immingham and they handle £75bn of trade each year.

That’s 13 per cent of all of the UK’s seaborne trade. The Humber supports 23,000 jobs in the region and this includes logistics, security, marine, operations and finance. In Hull, staff are based at Port House offices located in Hedon Road, and across the 10,000-acre port complex. The Port of Hull is the UK’s leading softwood timber importer and it also has a booming container terminal that has

COMMITTED TO SUPPORTING BUSINESS AWARDS AS ONE of the leading businesses in the region, with a history in Hull dating back more than 130 years, Arco is deeply committed to supporting a wide range of community programmes and charitable organisations. Arco has been involved in the Mail’s Business Awards for more than a decade, as the company continues to celebrate the phenomenal community

work being done throughout the region. The company is recognised nationally for its work within the communities that form a key part of its increasing network across the UK. Arco is the UK’s leading supplier of safety equipment, workwear, safety boots and shoes, gloves and maintenance supplies. Arco has previously said it is “proud

to be associated with like-minded companies, which understand that business can also be a force for good”. Arco has said it is “extremely proud of the family ethos which supports Arco’s charitable efforts”. It will doubtless be eagerly awaiting this year’s Business Awards, to discover who will win the Community Involvement Award.

onoco Trident secures its second finalists spot of this year’s awards, as it vies for the Community Involvement Award. The business produces digital artwork for some of the world’s biggest brands – from Procter & Gamble and Unilever to Coca-Cola and Reckitt-Benckiser. Trident has seen its turnover increase by an average of 30 per cent a year over the past two decades, but one thing that has remained constant is its firm place at the heart of the community. The company has, over the years, worked tirelessly to support the region’s schools, colleges, universities and charities. It has produced powerful marketing campaigns for chosen charities HEY Children’s University and Dove House, and works closely with the city’s Ron Dearing

UTC, both Hull and East Riding College, the university and St Mary’s College. “We are proud of our roots and our community and we are extremely passionate about the city of Hull,” Trident said. More than 20 employees ran this year’s Hull Marathon, and Trident’s annual charity Tea Party most recently raised more than £3,000. Trident hosts an annual summer school, giving young people the chance to learn about artwork and CGI creation. “With our focus to engage, develop and enhance young adult skills, we have utilised our learning and development department and subject matter experts, to provide training, advice and guidance to support local colleges and universities,” the business said.

C

obus Communications Group has a long-standing track record of donating time and money to the region’s charities, community initiatives and good causes. Through its Cobus Foundation, launched in 2010 by managing director Michael Smith, the company has raised more than £110,000 for charities, and given more than 3,000 hours of time to supporting these organisations. Cobus’s current chosen charity is Hull 4 Heroes, which helps veterans

transition back into civilian life. Cobus is supporting the charity as it opens a new centre in Hull – donating cabling infrastructure, data points, a telephone system, CCTV and engineers’ time to make the dream a reality. Mr Smith said: “From the early stages, it was quickly recognised that it’s not just about the money raised or donated. “It is often found that support is required and welcomed in many other ways, such as helping to create positive awareness and helping a charity or

community initiative with a structured support mechanism to promote stability.” Cobus has also this year become part of the More Together charity. R

esQ Limited is a privately owned, outsourced contact centre, specialising in inbound and outbound call centre services. The business was launched in Hull in 2006, and now has a second centre in Seaham, County Durham. ResQ has developed a number of solutions to problems that plague its industry, most notably its Responsible Telemarketing. The programme comes in three parts – one can guarantee 0 per cent abandoned calls on a predictive dialling campaign, enhancing customer experience and meaning you never pick up the phone to a ghost caller. Another reduces the number of times a customer can be called

for each campaign, in a bid to clamp down on nuisance calls to people who have no intention of picking up the phone. The third element reduces the number of silent calls, aimed at lowering the amount of non-productive calls an agent makes every day. ResQ said: “Increasingly our clients recognise the value in our innovative technology, as they cannot replicate our benchmark performance with compliance in their own operations or with other service providers. “In this industry, never before has technology played such a pivotal role in driving business and it is without doubt responsible for ResQ’s latest contract win.”

The company has already unveiled a ground-breaking pilot project with Hull City Council to provide smart bins across the city. Aimed to improving waste collection, the bins will notify the council when they are full or have been vandalised. oodbeam came about through a personal need. A busy mum wanted to find a way of being able to see how her young daughter was feeling when she wasn’t with her. Christina McHugh and Jonathan Elvidge partnered together to launch the innovative piece of wearable tech, set to be fully launched early next year. The gadget allows its wearer to record how they are feeling with the touch of a button. The data is then viewable on an app, allowing parents to see how

their child is feeling, and track their mood over a period of weeks or months. “Up until now, there has been no recognised metric for happiness and wellbeing,” Moodbeam said. “Certainly nothing exists that can capture moods instantly and accurately to visualise mental health. “Prototype trials within personal and professional settings over the past two years have produced compelling feedback, to the extent that its manufacture is now eagerly awaited.”

Alamgir, chief executive and founder said. “We are excited for Hull to be seen as a key player at the heart of the Northern Powerhouse and beyond. “Connexin believes strongly in the economic potential of the north, and in particular Hull.” Tomorrow will see the Bonus Arena play host to the first ever Connexin Live. Set to become one of the UK’s premier smart tech events, it will examine the importance of making our cities smarter. Connexin has also teamed up with Hull Collegiate and supports the £10 challenge – an initiative aimed at helping young people in the city to develop entrepreneurial skills for the future.

THE company is one of the world’s leading international oil and gas businesses, operating in more than 80 countries around the world. With headquarters in the UK, BP is one of the country’s largest businesses and a major energy producer and supplier to the nation. Last year, BP celebrated 50 years of operation at Saltend. The products BP manufactures at Saltend are shipped worldwide as key building blocks for films, fibres, fabric, food packaging and pharmaceuticals. BP is, this year, proud to return as sponsors of the Innovation and Technology Award. Technology is key to developing and creating the growth opportunities needed for a strong future. It is critical that businesses that champion and capitalise a commitment to innovation and technology are recognised for their importance in building the ongoing success and sustainability of the Humber region.

MOODBEAM

The gadget has already secured the backing of the Hull and East Yorkshire NHS Foundation Trust, which will distribute Moodbeam devices once available. Hull University will become one of the first universities in the country to use it within its student welfare support services. “Sometimes it’s the little things that cause unnecessary strain, simply because we don’t have the time or opportunity to think about how we feel, and really if it’s something worth worrying about,” the business said.

The company has also reduced its usage of corrugated packaging by 35 tonnes, and has revealed 100 per cent of its sausage trays are now recyclable. Cranswick announced the breakthrough news as the country celebrated Recycle Week, just five months after the company became a

founding signatory of the UK Plastic Pact in April. Jim Brisby, group commercial director at Cranswick, said: “Recycle Week is a great chance to look at the progress Cranswick has made in making the circular economy a reality. “Through our peer-to-peer collaboration, I’m glad to see we are not just talking about change, but taking real steps in making it happen, and fast.” Peter Maddox, director at

waste reduction charity WRAP, said: “Since Cranswick signed up to the UK Plastics Pact, I have been delighted with their continued engagement and commitment to tackling plastic waste, and acting as an open and future-focused example for the food industry and beyond. “They are proof that by working together with the sector, we can build a more prosperous future for citizens, businesses and the planet.”

Last year, the company purchased a new office and warehouse space, with plans in place to install solar panels on the roof and replace the existing gas boiler with a heat pump system. “We use only recycled paper and, where possible, operate a paperless office,” the company said. “In the next three months we will be installing an electric vehicle charging point with a rolling programme to replace current vehicles with all-electric and/or hybrid vehicles. “This, along with the implementation of low-carbon technologies, will result in a significant reduction of CO2 emissions from the business.”

T

urner Timber Frames Ltd has been building timber frame homes for more than 30 years. Founded by Malcolm Turner in his garage, the business now has a team of 21, and has displayed impressive growth over the past eight years. Timber frame is a form of building that replaces the block layer of a brick-and-block wall with a structural pre-insulated timber panel. Timber frame is incredibly thermally efficient, helping to achieve a carbon negative structural shell. It is a fully designed and engineered product, meaning the added inbuilt project management service, quality control and factory production

all fall naturally within the core of timber frame home building. The Government recognises off-site construction is the best approach to cope with the modern-day demands and targets set for housing supply, efficiency and thermal performance. Turner Timber Frames specialises in the construction of bespoke timber frame homes, and has tackled many complex and challenging schemes. The firm provided the timber frame for the recent DIY SOS build in Hessle, and were heavily involved in the training facility and factory platforms for the Siemens Gamesa factory in Hull. The company is also working with Bishop Burton College and Hobson and Porter to showcase timber frame to students.

TWO long-established, awardwinning Hull businesses have come together in the Wykeland Beal joint venture to drive forward the city’s biggest urban regeneration project. Commercial property developer Wykeland Group and housebuilder Beal Homes are working in partnership with Hull City Council to create the city’s first urban village in the waterfront Fruit Market district. The regeneration is breathing new life into an area that was largely derelict after the relocation of the city’s fruit and veg trade. Sustainability is a guiding principle of the scheme, as it is with all Wykeland and Beal developments. The focus is on preserving and conserving the area’s rich heritage, wherever possible; creating commercial spaces that enhance the local community; and building energyefficient homes that offer the best of modern, sustainable city living. Wykeland Beal is proud to sponsor the Green Award and to play our part in recognising the region’s green business champions.

ast year’s winner of this category is back, as Beverley Motor Works aims to retain its Customer Focus award. Founded by Alan Lewis and Richard Hayes, the company was borne out of a frustration at the poor customer care being delivered to customers by dealerships, for a hefty price tag. Eight years on, the business has in excess of 2,500 customers – 90 per cent of whom return year-on-year for MoTs, servicing and motor maintenance. Out of 1,300 reviews, Beverley Motor Works has a near-perfect customer satisfaction score of 99.1 per cent across the board. “Helpfulness and attitude of staff ” is consistently the top-performing factor, with an impressive score of 99.5 per cent,

cementing its place as one of the top garages in the region. The company’s strong retention rate has seen its sales increase by more than 20 per cent year-on-year. Continually providing employees with training opportunities and development, the company currently has several team members enrolled in apprenticeship schemes. In May, Beverley Motor Works picked up Garage of the Year and Customer Service Excellence Awards at the Auto Industry Excellence Awards 2018, recognising high performers in the motor industry. With growth showing no signs of slowing down, the company continues to put its customers first, and is a shining light in its industry.

The company said its main objective is “not only to be the best engineers we can be, but to always act in a professional manner, be well presented and always turn up when we say we will”. Their

attention to detail, excellence in discipline and focus on customer care is paramount. “Our in-house system ensures that every customer receives a reminder from Elite every year when their servicing is due, and we like to keep in touch with our customers and offer a personal service.” Elite was recently accepted into the Guild of Master Craftsmen, a hard-earned accreditation for companies that display excellent customer care.

Steady growth in Great year for IT turbulent market support business S

ince its inception in 2007, Pure Renewables has grown from a part-time one-man operation to a significant player in the UK’s renewables heating industry. Pure Renewables has established itself as one of only a handful of companies in the region with in-depth knowledge and experience of the industry’s technology. With 11 permanent staff members, and one part-time, the company is also embarking on a student placement scheme to offer spots to business undergraduates. Three apprentices also currently work with Pure, one of whom recently qualified as a heating engineer. Pure Renewables recorded

profits of £40,000 in the 2017-18 year – in part due to a move to new premises – and expects profits for the next financial year to hit £90,000. “Pure Renewables has demonstrated strong and steady growth in a turbulent market sector,” the company said. “Pure Renewables has sought to ‘give back’ to the local business community through its involvement with For Entrepreneurs Only’s Ignition Programme – helping and advising start-up businesses. “The company has also contributed to bringing money into the Hull economy and this is set to continue as it considers expanding its operations in the north-west and south-east of England.”

I

T support and cyber security company Jupiter IT has had a fantastic year, as it marked its tenth birthday with a new office, record turnover and a string of new team members. The company was launched in 2007 as The Computer Store by directors Dan Gladstone, Iain Powell and Craig Paul. After rebranding to Jupiter IT last year, the business increased turnover from £370,000 to £430,000 in just a year. By June next year, turnover is expected to hit the £550,000 mark. Jupiter IT moved its operations to Hessle, and at the same time announced the appointment of a new senior engineer. Dan Gladstone, infrastructure director at Jupiter IT, said: “We’ve got much more space here

to accommodate our expanding team and to invite people in. “Added to the more modern design it will enable us to improve and grow what we do, and we’re now looking at hosting events to raise awareness among clients and the business community generally of issues around GDPR and cyber-security, which are just two of our specialist areas.” Jupiter IT is now focused on providing services surrounding the newly introduced GDPR law, and cyber-crime protection, which has proved a growing concern for businesses in recent times. Early last year, the company also secured accreditation to the gover nment’s Cyber Essentials scheme.

BAMBU

APD COMMUNICATIONS

Company going from Remarkable growth strength to strength from tech specialist B

ambu, formerly known as Halltech Electrical Services Ltd, is this year celebrating 15 years of business in

Hull. Having survived difficult trading conditions in the past, the business is now going from strength to strength and, in recent years, has rewired more than 2,000 houses for Hull City Council. The company has also secured funding and installed hundreds of boilers using government grants for low-income households across the region. A rocky 2017 saw Bambu make a loss of £55,000, but a remarkable turnaround saw the company record profits of £60,000 just 12 months later. On its current forecast, Bambu is targeting profits exceeding £300,000 at

the end of the current financial year. With current turnover standing at £1.2m, the company is well-placed to continue its growth into the future. “Since opening our in-house PANDA training academy, we have trained our scaffold workforce to become a very rounded and highly-motivated team,” the company said in its entry. “This has led to Bambu doubling net profit and delivering a sector-leading performance.” Bambu Community, which supports charities and good causes across Hull, has also recently raised more than £10,000 for Paul4Brain Recovery. Staff members abseiled down Hull’s K2 building as part of fundraising, and Bambu has also invested £100,000 into Hull FC, displaying a commitment to sport in the city.

A

PD Communications’ growth in the past two years is little short of remarkable. The control room tech specialist is forecasting revenues of more than £9m this year – a 36 per cent rise in the past 24 months. The business now supplies control room software to almost 70 per cent of the UK’s police forces, and has recently secured orders worth more than £3m across Europe and the Middle East. With targets of achieving £15m annual revenues by 2020, APD is setting its sights at the very top. “We’re proud that our management team maintains 50 per cent female representation, well above the industry average of just 15 per cent,” the company said.

“This diversity and inclusion is crucial for us in creating new perspectives and ideas that drive innovation, which is the nerve-centre of the business.” The company’s latest innovation, the Cloud Control Room, is breaking frontiers. It has been shortlisted for, and won, several national and international awards, and APD has enjoyed past success at the 2017 and 2018 Hull and East Yorkshire Digital Awards, and the 2017 Hull Daily Mail Business Awards. APD has this year hired 24 new recruits, growing its workforce by more than 20 per cent. It has created new jobs in Hull, and has this year tripled its training budget, with plans to boost this further in the future.

With almost 600 employees in Hull, and more than 200 in Seaham, County Durham, the company is now one of the city’s largest employers, and has its own dedicated in-house training academy.

The company said: “One key differentiator that sets ResQ apart from its competitors is our investment in technology and deployment over the past couple of years, to ensure we are compliant with the regulatory changes facing the contact centre market. “Our clients benefit from 0 per cent abandoned and silent call rates all the time. “Through the deployment of ResQ’s unique technology proposition, existing and new clients have recognised the

onnexin’s roots lie, as a surprisingly large number of successful businesses do, in a bedroom. The brainchild of founders Furqan Alamgir and Alex Yeung is now on a mission to transform Hull into one of the country’s leading smart cities. With a mission to connect people and the Internet of Things, Connexin has made big waves in Hull this year. “With our roots firmly entrenched in Hull, we are incredibly proud to be part of the local business community,” Mr Alamgir said. This time last year, Connexin received £10m of investment from Silicon Valley tech giant Cisco

Systems and Digital Alpha Advisors. At the time, Digital Alpha’s managing partner Rick Shroti said the investment was in “one of the UK’s leading players in smart city technology”. Connexin is currently building a £5m data centre at the Bridgehead Business Park. When the facility opens in December, it will create 60 new jobs, and aims to accelerate Hull in its race to become of the country’s top smart cities. A partnership with Hull City Council has also seen smart bins piloted across the city, which alert the council to when they need emptying, or if they have been vandalised or set on fire.

Working in partnership with insurance giant AXA, rradar’s advice and risk management packages produce a reduction in claims – good for both AXA and rradar. Despite its influential work, however, rradar is not standing still. The firm has seen usage of its rradarstation, a web-based library available to clients, increase by 33 per cent. rradar’s workforce has also

We continue to take on more staff to handle the increase in demand for our services, as well as to produce more tech-based client service delivery solutions. “Turnover has grown significantly year-on-year.” rradar is also an active member of Hull’s community. The firm organised two successful TEDx events at Pocklington School.

FOUNDED in Hull more than 100 years ago, Gosschalks has grown to become one of the biggest and most successful legal practices in the region. Over the past two decades, in particular, the firm has expanded rapidly, offering a full range of services to a client base stretching to all corners of the UK, incorporating a diverse range of business types from individuals to large PLCs. In recent years, an increase in local work has seen the firm go from strength to strength, as clients are coming to appreciate that Gosschalks’ approach is an extremely cost-effective method of delivering value-added legal services and support to businesses of all shapes and sizes. A sponsor and firm supporter of the Mail Business Awards since their inception well over a decade ago, Gosschalks is extremely proud to continue its sponsorship as part of its commitment towards supporting the local business community.

n 2007, Chris Whitelock founded Pure Renewables on the back of a news broadcast he had watched on TV. The bulletin, from then environment secretary David Miliband, announced that renewable solutions would play a significant role in confronting the UK’s “growing energy crisis. In Chris’s own words: “A shiver ran down my spine and I knew I had to do something about it. Chris launched Pure

Renewables with little prior knowledge about the sector he was entering. Through his dynamic leadership, the business has reached key milestones, and is continuing to grow. With a host of lucrative contracts under its belt – most notably an £835,000 contract to replace the heating system at Hull’s Lees Rest Houses – Pure Renewables is forging a successful path in the sector. The business has seen yearon-year business growth, and

is now launching a student placement scheme in a bid to inspire the next generation of renewable entrepreneurs. Speaking about Chris, Pure Renewables’ Jonny Murray said: “The risk Chris took in being an early entrant to an infant but growing market has paid dividends. “Pure Renewables can now boast being one of the longest-established renewable businesses in the UK. “Chris would be a worthy winner of the Entrepreneur of the Year Award.

aking the leap to become an entrepreneur often means turning your back on a safe and secure job. Jo Fleming had more reason than most not to leave behind her high-flying career in recruitment. Despite not entering the world of work until she was 27, Jo eventually secured a good and well-paid job at one of the country’s biggest blue-chip PLCs. However, she took the brave decision to go it alone, launching recruitment business Yorkshire Staffing Services in 2011. The business started with a small office in Goole, with just Jo and her laptop. Today, she has 14 people placing an average of 200 temporary and permanent

workers per day, with 30 clients across the county and beyond. Jo took another risk when she launched her second business, GB IT Recruitment. After spotting a gap in the market for a recruitment agency aimed at Hull’s emerging tech hub, GB Recruitment is now achieving sales in excess of ÂŁ100,000 a year. Natalie Murphy, of Pace Communications, nominated Jo for the award. She said: “Jo’s message is simple. It isn’t that anyone can become an entrepreneur despite a difficult start in life. “It’s that you can become an entrepreneur because of the tough situations you have faced.â€?

Specialising in the supply of permanent and supply staff to the engineering and construction sectors, the company has now grown to employ five members of staff, with a sixth joining next month. In its second year, the agency achieved an impressive turnover of more than £1m, and has filled dozens of positions across the East Riding. The company is doing its bit to stop the “brain drain” of professional people leaving the region in search of work, and this summer filled its 50th permanent role. “Our success is down to exceeding the expectations of our clients with a professional, honest approach that offers both quality and value,” Mr Ball said. personal values make him stand out from the crowd. “He has a work ethic and personality that will ensure he continues to develop and grow within our business. “He embodies everything an apprentice should aspire to be.” Westcot said Lloyd had integrated well into the team, and had made “a real positive impact on how the team works together”. Lloyd has also voluntarily supported other apprentices at the YH Training Centre.

ack Dockerty joined Cobus Communications Group as a sales apprentice in September 2016, when he was 18. From the moment he walked through the door following a recommendation from a local training provider, his outgoing personality and drive to learn and succeed shone through. Jack’s aim is to become a key account manager, looking after Cobus’s high-spend clients. Emma Waudby, sales and marketing manager at Cobus, said: “From the very beginning of Jack’s career here at Cobus, his willingness to embrace learning ensured he passed his apprenticeship with flying colours. “He is always professional,

reliable and consistent in his approach to any given task. “He respectfully challenges in an assertive manner to ensure he leaves no stone unturned for his customers.” Jack has been described as “an integral part” of the Cobus team. Clients have started asking for Jack in person, such is his way with people and exceptional relationship-building skills. Michael Smith, managing director at Cobus, said: “After starting out as an apprentice myself, some 27 years ago, I totally understand how daunting and tough things can be. “I’ve only ever heard positive things about Jack. He has already proven himself to be a real winner.”

ames Needham joined the architectural division of the Eltherington Group in December 2015 as a shy young man who had been unemployed for a year, but with a desire to thrive. The apprenticeship he was offered was a unique and bespoke one, and required James to estimate the cost of fabrication of architectural products. As if that wasn’t enough, James embarked on a college day learning welding and fabrication course in Hull. Before this, he had never welded before. Tracy Dinsdale, of the Eltherington Group, said of James: “His shyness and anxiety has previously held him back,

however after training and work experience he is becoming more confident over the phone and dealing with new customers. “Due to staffing rearrangements at the start of the year, James had been challenged with his biggest task yet, and we knew he would have to step up his game. “James became the account manager for a handful of some of our key customers. He has stepped up and has done the company proud.” James has also attended and completed several technical drawing night courses, and has enjoyed keeping the full team up to date on an aluminium water feature he designed and built.

TOURISM AND HOSPITALITY

DOUBLETREE BY HILTON HOTEL

FIRM ADDS VALUE TO CITY OF HULL

TAPASYA

Hotel plays host to Striving to provide high-profile events unique experience T I t’s been quite a first year for Hull’s £25m DoubleTree by Hilton hotel. After months of planning, building and training, the city centre’s new four-star hotel opened its doors to guests on December 6, 2017. In its first year, the hotel has already played host to countless high-profile events, welcomed VIP guests to the city, and is on course for a 67 per cent occupancy level in 2018 – an impressive figure considering its still-recent opening. For the first time in a number of years, the annual Remarkable East Yorkshire Tourism Awards (Reytas) were brought to Hull, with the DoubleTree acting as

host for the prestigious night. The hotel’s ballroom is capable of holding up to 550 guests, and it was packed to the rafters for the awards night. The organising team faced their toughest test to date, but came through with flying colours and showed what the hotel has done for tourism and hospitality in the city and region. Hull’s DoubleTree has already been rated in second place in the Hilton chain’s portfolio in England, and is closing in on the top 20 across Europe, the Middle East and Africa. The hotel has no plans to stand still, as it strives to be the pinnacle for hospitality in the city for many years to come.

apasya has a serious love of Indian food. From its two restaurants in Hull’s Marina and in Beverley Road, the name Tapasya has become synonymous with fine dining cuisine. This summer, Tapasya also unveiled its new street food venture Tapasya Kitchen, in the city’s Trinity Market. The men at the helm of Tapasya are Tapan Mahapatra and Mukesh Tirkoti. Both have worked tirelessly to forge strong connections with local suppliers and brewers to ensure both restaurants meet customers’ high expectations. Mr Mahapatra said: “Being able to bring some of our chef ’s

authentic childhood foodie memories to Hull has always been an aspiration. “We have many happy memories of drinking Chai and eating Chaat in India with family and friends. “Our continued investment and expansion within the city shows our confidence in the growing foodie scene, with which we are proud to be involved.” Tapasya has also launched a new gluten-free menu, and is set to unveil a new range of festive and Christmas party menus. From the outset, Tapasya@ Marina has strived to provide a unique dining experience for people across Hull and the East Riding.

Cementing top reputation P atrington Haven Leisure Park has cemented its reputation as the region’ premier five-star holiday and leisure park. Opened in 1984 by Graham Sparkes, the park is still family owned and run to this day. In the past three years, Patrington Haven has gone from strength to strength, winning a Reyta award for Best Holiday Park in both 2017 and 2018.

Turnover in the past four years has risen from more than £2.5m to more than £4.5m – an increase of 74 per cent. Set in 40 acres of East Yorkshire countryside, the park boasts what it describes as “some of the best facilities in the whole of the UK”. In September last year, The Spa at The Country Club was launched with the aim to provide luxury health and beauty treatments to caravan owners and the surrounding area.

One year on from its opening, the spa turned over an impressive £65,000. Patrington Haven said when it comes to selling caravans at the park, it employs “the grandma test”. “If we wouldn’t sell it to our own grandma, then it won’t do,” the park said. “Unlike many of the large national holiday park chains, we’re family run and owned, meaning we can put the customer at the heart of everything we do.”

HULL Trains is an open access train operating company owned by FirstGroup that is, without a doubt, a Hull success story. Proudly carrying the city’s name into the capital with its daily direct services, Hull Trains positively raises the profile of Hull. Hull Trains operates seven trains a day between Hull and London each weekday and five on a Saturday and Sunday. Today the organisation carries around one million passengers each year. Formed in 2000, the company was one of the UK’s first nonfranchised operators delivering services that were not of interest to the franchised operators at that time. Hull Trains addressed the historic absence of regular direct rail services between Hull and London. With 92 direct services each week, passengers can now arrive at their destination at a time that suits them. Hull Trains adds value to the city that gave it its name. While it is the UK’s smallest train operating company, Hull Trains is a major employer in the area.

LIFETIME CONTRIBUTION

A fitting finale to honour the best in business

Simon Lunt, senior partner at Gosschalks Solicitors

ICONIC FIRM IS PROUD TO BACK BUSINESS IN EAST YORKSHIRE

AWARD RECOGNISES A BUSINESS FIGURE WHO HAS MADE A POSITIVE IMPACT IN THE REGION

T

he last, but certainly not least, award to be presented at the 2018 Hull Daily Mail Business Awards will be the prestigious Lifetime Contribution Award. Sponsored by KCOM since the creation of the award, the title goes to someone who has had a significant and positive impact on the local business community. Unlike the other categories, there is no nomination process or shortlist published. Last year, the coveted award went to Simon Lunt, senior partner at Gosschalks Solicitors, and a man whose impressive career at the firm has spanned more than four decades. Mr Lunt has received widespread acclaim as a solicitor, but also for his involvement across a range of organisations. Announcing the decision at last year’s awards, KCOM’s Alan Worthing recognised the contribution of Mr Lunt, not just for his business acumen, but also for helping many causes in Hull and the East Riding. In 2017 Simon joined the board at Beal Homes as a Non-Executive

Director. He is also a Director of his own group of property businesses and holds various other Board positions, including as chairman of Hull-based contact centre business Res Q and as a non-executive director of Hessle-based plastic components

manufacturer Bridgewood and long-established Hull-based construction company GEO. Houlton & Sons. Speaking about Mr Lunt, Horncastle Group chairman Andrew Horncastle said: “Simon is a guy who commands respect.

“You mention his name in the area and those who perhaps don’t know him that well would say he’s a solicitor. “And he is a solicitor, an exceptionally good one, and one who has been a key player in building Gosschalks into one of the largest and most successful firms. “But there is much, much more to Simon when you know him well.” Mr Lunt succeeded Spencer Group founder Charlie Spencer when he became the latest in an esteemed list of recipients of the Lifetime Contribution Award. Other previous winners include Victoria Johnson, founder of Kingston Recruitment – who won in 2015 – and Sewell Group’s Paul Sewell, who took home the award in 2014. Simon Lunt joined Gosschalks as a solicitor in 1976 and became partner in 1978. He developed the corporate practice of the firm and became senior partner in 2000. He is also the recipiant of an honorary doctorate of laws from the University of Lincoln where he was a governor for ten years.

LOCAL communications provider KCOM is one of Hull’s largest companies, employing about 900 people in the city and contributing more than £187m each year to the local economy. KCOM plays a key role in supporting local regeneration and business growth. It is a partner of the Centre for Digital Innovation (C4DI) tech hub and for the start-up support organisation For Entrepreneurs Only (FEO) as well as a founding partner for the Ron Dearing UTC. The firm’s £85m deployment of its full fibre Lightstream broadband is making Hull the ultrafast capital of the UK and one of the fastest and most connected places in the world – an achievement described by Culture Minister Matt Hancock MP as “tremendous”. The company has announced its Lightstream rollout will be completed by March 2019, connecting more than 200,000 homes and businesses across the region. More than 4,000 local businesses are already enjoying the benefits of Lightstream’s gigabit speeds, enabling them to work more productively and respond more quickly to the needs of their customers. KCOM is a long-standing supporter of the Mail’s Business Awards. It has sponsored the Lifetime Contribution Awards since it was introduced in 2012 to acknowledge local business people who have made a positive, lasting difference to the region’s economy and wider community.
