New carriages to increase capacity and add potential for faster services By Debbie Hall Business Reporter d.hall@hulldailymail.co.uk

Trains customers certainty of direct services to and from London until 2029. Will Dunnett, managing director of Hull Trains, said: “At the heart of these plans is our commitment to keeping local people and businesses connected to the capital.

“The new trains will increase our fleet from four units to five, with an extra 20 per cent seating capacity on each. “In total, this means we can serve 50 per cent more customers than we do today. “The trains are also faster and will offer state-of-the-art comfort for our customers. “We will also be announcing additional services in response to cus-

tomer demand.” Hitachi will now build five AT300 trains of five carriages each. The units will be able to travel on the electrified East Coast Main Line from London King’s Cross and then on diesel power on the unelectrified line to Hull and Beverley, giving Hull customers access to the benefits of

Powerhouse partners step up support DOZENS of firms have stepped up to back the Northern Powerhouse in a major boost to the Gover nment’s ambitions. Leading businesses, including Siemens, Vivergo Fuels and Visit Hull and East Yorkshire, have been unveiled as Northern Powerhouse partners. A raft of firms have signed up to the new Government scheme, with many others in the pipeline, meaning the number of Northern Powerhouse partners has surpassed the 30 mark. Each of these companies has committed to join forces with the Government to help the North achieve its full potential – and attract new jobs and investment to the region. Chief Secretary to the Treasury, David Gauke, said: “We are determined to create a Northern Powerhouse and are clear we must work closely with businesses to pool the abundance of talent across the North to make this a reality. “Dozens of bold businesses are sending a clear message by joining us in this quest to make the Northern Powerhouse an even better place to live, work and invest in. “But this is just the start, and I would encourage other leading companies to sign up to our new scheme, so we can continue to work together to unleash the full potential of our great northern towns and cities.” Prime Minister Theresa May has made it a key mission to back business growth across the Northern Powerhouse, through record investments in transport, backing for science and infrastructure schemes and cultural and sports funding, such as the £24m investment to bring the cycling World Road Championships to Yorkshire. The businesses taking part in the Northern Powerhouse Partnership Programme – which range from infrastructure specialists and PR agencies to banks and universities – will join a new network of leaders who strongly believe in the potential to grow the Northern economy and are committed to delivering this growth.

New carriages to increase capacity Continued from PAGE 1 the East Coast Main Line electrified track to London for the first time. Jon Plowright, head of engineering at Hull Trains, said: “These Bi-Mode trains will bring the benefits of electrification to our region, ensuring that Hull and the East Riding remains competitive and connected to the capital in the long term. “Our maintenance contract with Hitachi also secures the services of our existing maintenance team, securing nine jobs for our region.” The benefits of the new trains include: ■ More seats – 327 seats in total, 20 per cent more than the current services. ■ Greater comfort – new interiors, air conditioning, wifi, power sockets. ■ Quieter and more environmentally friendly – electric power is quieter with lower emissions. ■ Reduced journey time possible – the new trains will have faster acceleration and a higher top speed of 225kmh. Hull Trains is a high-profile advocate for the city of Hull and a great success story in the industry. Last month, it was crowned the UK’s Rail Operator of the Year and consistently scores among the highest customer satisfaction levels of any operator in the country. Mr Dunnett said: “Our current trains have served us well and we intend to continue to invest in these units to ensure they are fit for the next three years. “Our plans include an additional three quarters of a million pound investment to further improve our on-board service facilities, including enhancements to our first class and buffet catering facilities. “We have also installed innovative Passenger Information Screens on all our units as well as introducing new on-board CCTV to enhance the security and peace of mind of our customers.” The new units will enter service for Hull Trains in 2019.

Partnership provides the platform to show off city Rail companies are latest brands to link up with City of Culture By Debbie Hall Business Reporter d.hall@hulldailymail.co.uk

THE UK’s Rail Operator of the Year, Hull Trains, partnering with its sister company TransPennine Express (TPE), has been announced as the Official Rail Supplier of Hull City of Culture 2017. The train companies are the latest organisations to link up with Hull 2017 as the city prepares to show the world just what is has to offer during the year-long celebration of culture. Both operators are committed to providing visitors to Hull 2017 with a positive and lasting impression and their journey to the city and arrival at Hull Paragon station will be the gateway to these celebrations. A dedicated visitor information kiosk, a space which has been donated by TPE and fitted out by Strata Group, has now opened in the station, giving customers the chance to find out more information about various events from official UK City of Culture 2017 volunteers. Going forward, visitors will also be able to book tickets here for the many events going on across the city. Will Dunnett, managing director for Hull Trains, said: “We’re especially proud to be the official rail provider for Hull City of Culture 2017. “We believe that Hull and the Humber region has so far been one of the UK’s best kept secrets

ector for TPE, said: “Next year, Hull will attract people from around the world and we are eager to welcome visitors on to our trains and into the station. “We are thrilled to be the Rail Supplier for such a high profile year of cultural celebration and have been working with Hull City Council, Hull UK City of Culture 2017 and our fellow FirstGroup companies to prepare for the many events. “I would encourage anyone planning on attending any of the events to travel by train to Hull UK City of Culture 2017.”

Martin Green, chief executive for Hull 2017, said: “We’re expecting an extra million visitors to Hull next year, many of whom will be coming by train. “It’s brilliant having the support of FirstGroup and our fantastic, volunteer staffed kiosk in a prime location at the station. “It means that, wherever people are coming from around the country, they can expect the warmest of welcomes and all the information they need to make the most out of Hull UK City of Culture 2017.”

A fruitful deal Law firm advising on £80m regeneration THE property department at Hull-based law firm Andrew Jackson is acting for the local partners driving forward the £80m regeneration of Hull’s Fruit Market. The firm is advising The Fruit Market LLP, a joint venture comprising regeneration company Wykeland Group, residential developer Beal Homes and Hull City Council, on the granting of leases relating to several commercial units located within the Fruit Market, which will see £70m of privately funded development in Hull’s most significant urban regeneration project. Wykeland Beal intends to transform the Fruit Market into an urban village featuring business, arts, culture, retail and leisure uses, together with new homes. The Fruit Market vision will create independent shops, boutiques, galleries, cafés and restaurants in an area that will take centre stage during Hull’s year as UK City of Culture in 2017 and beyond. Regeneration work currently under way includes

new and refurbished commercial, retail and leisure space focused on Humber Street. A limited number of commercial units are now available to let, with occupation this autumn, with further releases next year. The scheme also includes 109 mews-style one, two and three bedroom homes around private courtyards. Paul Barker, partner and head of property at Andrew Jackson, said: “The Fruit Market has been a hub of economic activity for 200 years and was the centre of the city’s wholesale fruit and vegetable trade until 2009, when we acted for all of the fruit traders in their relo-

cation from Humber Street to their state of the art premises at Priory Park East. “It is great to see the area’s ongoing rejuvenation from our offices on the fringes of the Fruit Market at Marina Court, developed by Wykeland, which is a long-standing client of the firm.” David Donkin, property director of Wykeland, which is itself based in the Fruit Market, said: “Our vision for the Fruit Market as a unique, vibrant, cultural quarter where people live, work and play is being delivered, with almost £20m of investment completed or being developed.” The latest plans follow significant investment in the Fruit Market, including Wykeland’s £15m @TheDock development, which features the Centre for Digital Innovation (C4DI) tech hub and Stage @TheDock, a 350-seat amphitheatre, currently under construction. Stage @TheDock will be the only new permanent venue created in the city before 2017.

Gearing up for growth with hunt for new boss Bike maintenance specialist looking to recruit managing director By Debbie Hall Business Reporter d.hall@hulldailymail.co.uk

A HUMBER business that is at the forefront of the bicycle maintenance industry is looking for a new figurehead. Weldtite Products Ltd manufactures the world’s most comprehensive and innovative range of bike maintenance products, ranging from cleaners and lubricants to tools, puncture repair kits and tyre sealants. The company supplies the UK and international markets including the Far East. David Bennet-Baggs, managing director of Weldtite, is proud of the company’s continuing success story, which has seen it develop into a business that employs 40 people and has a turnover in excess of £7m. Weldtite has set the recruitment wheels in motion in partnership with executive agency Emmerson Kitney. Mr Bennet-Baggs said: “I want to get the company prepared for the next stage of growth, which means recruiting a commercial and forward-thinking leader. “This will also enable me to step back from the day to day running of the business.” Mr Bennet-Baggs said the Barton-upon-Humber based company manufactures 60 to 70 per cent of its products, but the new managing director would not necessarily need to come from the cycle trade or a manufacturing background. “We are looking for someone who is commercially minded,” he said. “Some of our customers want to liaise directly with the managing director and that aspect is extremely important. “And then it is everything from overseeing the factory and middle management to directing the business going forward.” Mr Bennet-Baggs explained why Weldtite had chosen to partner with Emmerson Kitney, an executive recruitment consultancy based in Welton.

PARTNERSHIP: From left, Vicky D’Arcy, David Bennet-Baggs and Becki Moore at Weldtite’s base in Barton-Upon-Humber. Picture: Darren Casey “They have recruited some good people for us before and know our business well. It’s about finding the right person and planning for the future of the business and our employees. “We have a great sales team who are very au fait with the market, so what I believe is equally important is that the managing director has the commercial ability to lead and take the company forward.” In 1989, Mr Bennet-Baggs joined the family company, which was predominantly involved in contract packaging industry. He developed and introduced the production and manufacturing of puncture repair kits to the company’s existing product range, using its existing manufacturing facilities. “It was quite apparent due to cost of the operations in the south east we needed to relocate the manufacturing facility, which is how Weldtite came to rent a 2,500sq ft building for its operations in Lincolnshire.

“Since then we have expanded considerably and we now own our 22,000sq ft factory on the Humber Bridge Industrial Estate and acquired additional land for potential expansion.” Weldtite, which manufactures almost two million puncture repair kits and more than one million bottles of oil in addition to cycle maintenance and accessory products, supports everyone from the family cyclist to the specialist cycle racing team member with its products, 35 per cent of which are exported. With a rolling programme of product development, Weldtite works to ISO 9001 international quality standard, meaning all its products are made to consistently high standards. Mr Bennet-Baggs said he is excited to be working closely with Emmerson Kitney to find an exceptional managing director to lead the firm into the next phase of business growth.

BIGINTERVIEW

Why successful scene in city techs some beating T

raditionally defined by housing one of the UK’s leading ports, Hull is now the focal point of the technology community in East Yorkshire and Northern Lincolnshire. This is reflected in its status as the 2017 UK City of Culture. Hull’s tech profile encompasses a varied mixture of innovation, established companies and a growing tech scene, which to the outside world has grown and developed relatively under the radar. However, through increased collaboration, private investment and government support, the Hull and Humber tech scene is evolving rapidly. Expanding on a recent trend for local currencies, Hull has developed the world’s first cryptocurrency based on a community loyalty point scheme. Hullcoin, which was officially released to the public on September 28 and has been developed by Kaini Industries, following result of research undertaken by Hull City Council to explore the potential of bitcoin technology to support communities in Hull affected by poverty. Hullcoin creates an exchangeable social credit, which benefits the local community. Users carry out various beneficial acts, such as giving up smoking or volunteering for local charity work, for which they receive Hullcoin, which can be redeemed with local businesses who have signed up to the scheme. Through this innovative solution, social and economic value is locked into Hull. Hull is also home to a number of established tech companies such as Trident, which was founded in Hull in 1993 with just five staff, and is now a digital brand asset management company employing more than 600 people worldwide. Two further examples are Ebuyer, the UK’s largest independent online retailer of computer and electrical goods, together with Summit, a respected change-maker in online retailing. Hull is also home to a small yet growing start-up and SME community. Technation’s 2016 report found that in Hull, East Yorkshire and Northern Lincolnshire, 12,219 people are employed in digital based industries, with notable sectors in software development, advertising and marketing and games development and publishing. Notable start-ups in the Hull region

Ian Plunkett, office senior partner at PwC in Hull, talks about the city’s flourishing tech scene STATUS: Ian Plunkett, of PwC.

include LabelWorx, which is one of the world’s largest digital distributor of dance and electronic music; Frillo, an online discount office and technology supplier with Gateway Interactive; and Smashed Crab Studio forming part of a vibrant independent computer game development scene. One of the “crown jewelsâ€? of the tech scene has been Hull-headquartered KCOM. With a world class reputation, it started life in 1902 as telephone department within the Hull Municipal Corporation. It now provides high-speed infrastructure to the city and is listed on the London Stock Exchange. Providing a range of communications and integration services throughout the UK, organisations now look to KCOM to help them integrate technology solutions that include contact, collaboration and cloud based services. Another huge success has been The Centre for Digital Innovation (C4DI) which is now a cornerstone for the Hull tech community and provides top class co-working, tech incubation and corporate innovation. Founded in 2014 with ÂŁ15m investment from the property developers Wykeland Group, the centre is based in the Hull’s up and coming re-energised Fruit Market area. C4DI offers memberships to the amazing co-working space to join a community of

like-minded people as well as tech incubation for start-up businesses. C4DI runs corporate innovation projects working with large and established businesses to help them innovate and grow by using technology more effectively. PwC is a committed supporter of C4DI and has held frequent drop-in sessions for members to chat over any business issues or concerns they may have in addition to working with C4DI on innovation projects. Further demonstrating the current confidence of the Hull and East Yorkshire tech scene, the second Hull and East Yorkshire’s Digital Awards took place recently. Celebrating the creative strides locally being made in the development and use of digital technology, the awards recognise achievement in 11 categories. PwC’s Jonathan Boulton, who leads the IT Risk practice across the North, sat on the overall judging panel, and the firm was proud to sponsor the best e-commerce category, which was won by Bronx Menswear, with Alterego and Trident fellow finalists. Overall, the future looks bright for Hull, East Yorkshire and Northern Lincolnshire as it looks to redefine itself. The region as a whole has plenty to offer in terms of innovation and talent. As a professional services firm, we see this at first hand through the widespread industries that have established themselves in the region but we also see this through the depth of its talented people, too. This year alone we have increased our own headcount in Hull by 23 per cent across a broad mix of roles, many of whom have been graduate entrants from the area. It’s important that talent is retained within the region and all organisations have a role to play in this respect. The success of the region and the success of digital and tech start-ups rests on growing businesses and investing in their talent. A thriving ecosystem depends on a committed and inter-connected community of dedicated people. Hull and the Humber tech ecosystem exemplifies this, and PwC is excited to help catalyse its further growth.

BRITONS ‘RELUCTANT TO TRY MOBILE-ONLY BANKING BRITONS are among the least likely people in the world to want to try mobile-only banking, a global study suggests. Nearly two-thirds (63%) said they were unlikely to try a bank they could only access through an app on their smartphones rather than being able to go into a branch, according to the study across 63 countries by Nielsen. This put Britain joint fifth, alongside the Netherlands, in the list of populations which are the least likely to use mobile-only banking. £21,000 ‘IS THE SUM THAT MAKES US FEEL FINANCIALLY SECURE’ THE average Briton needs £21,000 in savings to feel financially secure, a survey has found. Many savers are less than £5,000 short of this goal, according to the research from Nationwide Savings. A survey of 2,000 people with a savings account found people typically have £16,460 put away. When asked how much cash is needed to feel financially secure, the average answer was £21,313. Dark nights can bring unwelcome visitors

DARKER NIGHTS ‘COINCIDE WITH A SPIKE IN BREAK-IN CLAIMS’ HOUSEHOLDERS are being warned to be vigilant around this time of year, as it tends to see a spike in break-ins to homes and cars after the clocks go back. Friday is the most likely day of the week for thefts to occur during the winter months, according to Co-op Insurance. After analysing thousands of customer claims since 2013, Co-op Insurance found that home theft claims jump by 36% in the five months after the clocks go back, compared with the five months beforehand.

IX MONTHS on from the biggest shake-up to the state pension system and chaos reigns. Many people don’t know when they will get their state pension, let alone how much they will get. Research from Which? shows about a third of people aged 50 to 64 are unaware of the changes, and almost nine-tenths got the age they are due to receive their state pension wrong. Two-thirds don’t know that the new full flat-rate state pension is £155.65. Nobody seems to be happy. Those already retired on the old-style state pension are angry they receive the smaller amount of £119.30 a week. Meanwhile, huge numbers retiring on the new, supposed flat-rate pension of £155.65 a week are furious because they had no idea they were not entitled to the full amount – possibly because they don’t have 35 years’ worth of full National Insurance contributions. It also includes millions of workers who didn’t know what being ‘contracted out’ meant. These are people who paid a reduced rate of National Insurance or part of their NI was paid into a workplace or private pension. That boosted workplace or private pension savings but meant they gave up some state pension entitlement. Many were totally unaware this was happening or simply signed up to being ‘contracted out’ without knowing the effect it would have on their future state pension income. To try to make amends to those

THOSE WHO REACHED STATE PENSION AGE BEFORE APRIL 6, 2016: MEN BORN BEFORE APRIL 6, 1951 OR WOMEN BORN BEFORE APRIL 6, 1953 ■■IF YOU don’t receive the full basic state pension because you have gaps in your National Insurance record, you may be able to fill them by paying voluntary NI contributions. However, you can’t fill gaps if, in the year in question, you were over state pension age, eligible to pay the reduced Married Woman’s rate of NI, or exempt from paying NI as a self-employed person. You can normally only go back up If your pension seems poor, you may be able to do something about it

disappointed with the amount of pension they receive, or are due to receive from the state, the Government has brought in even more confusion by allowing people to top up their pension. But, like everything else in the world of pensions, it’s complicated. Steve Webb, former pensions minister and director of policy and external communications at Royal London, said: “It can be complicated to work out whether or not you can top up your state pension, but for those who can do

to six years, so the earliest missed NICs you can now make are for 2010/11 – and this has to be done by April 5, 2017. The cost of voluntary Class 3 NICs is £14.10 per week, so it costs up to £733.20 to buy an extra qualifying year and it would boost state pension by an extra £3.98 every week or £206.79 a year. Therefore it would take just less than four years of receiving the extra amount to recoup the cost – and you will continue to receive the extra amount for the rest of your life. ■■THOSE who are receiving the full £119.30-a-week old so it can be very good value for money. We have prepared a guide to help make sure that people can take advantage of the favourable terms on offer with voluntary National Insurance. After all, it’s not often the Government offers you a bargain!” Those eligible to top up their state pension will have to cough up lump sums in advance, which puts the option out of many people’s reach. The amount you get back is favourable when you compare it to buying an annuity with workplace or private pension savings, but you have to be able to afford the lump sum. And you need to get your sums right and ensure it’s worth stumping up that cash by being happy to predict how long you will live so you get the benefit. There are two ways people can top up. Firstly, they can pay

state pension can top up that amount by buying a new class of voluntary NI, Class 3A. You can get between £1 and £25 more a week but it costs dearly to do this and depends on the age you buy the top-up. For example, an extra £1 a week would cost a 65-year-old £890, compared to £674 for a 75-year-old. To get £25 a week it would cost a 65-yearold £22,250, and a 75-yearold £16,850.

THE owner of a newly launched health and safety consultancy firm has loaned his services free of charge to a charity based in the East Yorkshire market town where he grew up. Matt Smith, who is based in the village of Asselby, established Safe Workforce Solutions earlier in the summer and one of his first jobs was to carry out a free fire safety audit at the Shire Hall in nearby Howden, which is a busy and popular community venue. Having served as a watch manager for Humberside Fire and Rescue for 15 years and, more recently, spending two years as Howdens Joinery Supply Division’s lead technical and safety trainer, Mr Smith has a wealth of experience in fire safety and first

aid, and in providing health and safety solutions and advice to both private and public sector organisations. During his time in the fire service, Mr Smith was responsible for two fire stations; one was a public sector station serving the community and the other was a private sector station based at a large scale manufacturing facility where COMAH (Control of Major Accident Hazards) regulations were in place. In his role at Howdens Joinery, he was responsible for delivering and developing bespoke health and safety training solu-

Mr Smith said: “Since the business was launched, I’ve been working with businesses, large and small, across the UK to help them create a safer workplace. “The Shire Hall in Howden is a charity that’s very close to my heart and it was great to be able to give something back to the community where I grew up by offering my services free of charge.” Angela Stone, venue manager for the Shire Hall, said: “I felt somewhat daunted by the responsibility for the health and safety of a large public building, but Matt has created a clear set of priorities and action plan, with ongoing training and support. “We are incredibly grateful to Matt for offering us his experience and such a professional service at no cost.”

THE Regus centre in Hull’s Norwich House is celebrating a successful first year in business. Regus, the global workspace provider, opened its first Hull location, in Savile Street at the heart of the city centre, in November last year. The facility provides a range of fully-equipped workspace options and business services, including a business lounge, virtual offices, serviced offices, meeting rooms and video conferencing. Since opening, it has proved popular with business of all sizes, particularly small firms who are able to hire space on an as-needed basis, letting them grow at their own pace. One example of a small business using the space on a flexible basis is Vogue Estate Agents, who moved from a high street premises into Regus Hull in January. Owner Nick Beach said: “The move to the Regus space has allowed us to totally rethink our operation. “We are now just moments away from the train station, so we attract potential buyers from further afield as well as our local clients.” Richard Morris, UK chief executive, Regus, said: “Investing in Hull has proved to be a good decision. “The city is undergoing extensive regeneration and, with the 2017 City of Culture announcement, Hull’s profile will continue to rise. “Since opening last November, the centre has welcomed companies of various sizes and from a range of sectors, which are attracted by the flexible terms that we offer. “They include solicitors, estate agents, alternative energy providers, aeronautical companies and IT providers. We look forward to welcoming more businesses to this flexible way of working over the next 12 months and beyond.”

IT WILL provide the largest conference and events venue outside Leeds and Manchester and will open the doors to its first guests a year from now. Today, Business can reveal for the first time how the new DoubleTree by Hilton hotel in Hull will look on the inside. Piling on the Ferensway site began yesterday, with Lexington Avenue Leisure development directors Shaun Larvin and Sonny Nagra saying it was now “100 miles per hour” with the project. “Things will start to shape up pretty fast,” said Mr Larvin. “We have had delays with the project because of the modular build and things that needed ironing out, but we are now set 100 per cent for opening in November next year. “The contractors are flying out to Hong Kong today to see the prototype and we should have the module on site in March or April next year. “We are actively working up other projects, which will be announced shortly.” The 165-bed DoubleTree by Hilton hotel is costing £25m to build and will have conference and event facilities for up to 1,000 people. The hotel will provide a 24-hour full service facility, with gym and fitness suite, a restaurant, a bar, and a business centre. “We have bookings for it already,” said Mr Larvin. “When we announced it last year, people were ringing up. “There is massive demand from companies who have had to go out of town for conference events and will

45 years of success

GLAZING specialists EYG Commercial have been called upon to ensure Premier Inn’s new “flagship” hotel at Heathrow Airport lives up to Lenny Henry’s famous promise of “a good night’s sleep, guaranteed”, manufacturing high-performance acoustic windows to mitigate the noise from aircraft and volume traffic at the adjacent Terminal 4. The £1.2m glazing package for the 620-bed hotel was awarded to the Hull-based company after it demonstrated its capabilities to manufacture and install windows capable of meeting the most demanding specifications. Bernard Hastie, business development manager, said the contract – which is with Oman-based multi-national construction firm the STC Group and commissioned by Grove Developments – is a huge endorsement of EYG Commercial’s capabilities and growing reputation. He said: “The STC group are in the process of building a portfolio in the UK and EYG are delighted to be part of such a prestigious development. “We were obviously thrilled to secure this contract and EYG are also now working on several other projects with the STC group and looking forward to a long-term working relationship. “We had to firstly demonstrate our capability at handling such a complex project before the contract was determined. “Not only was there a need for us to demonstrate our ability to produce windows which performed to the very highest stand-

Nick Ward, joint managing director of EYG, said designing, developing and manufacturing windows at its factory had been challenging for the firm, but had

ultimately provided a product which can be used in many similar developments going forward. He said: “We now have a product which has been extensively researched, developed, tested and approved to perform at the highest of standards in the most challenging environments. “We can see an extensive market for this, so the hard work and dedication has been worthwhile.” The contract, which also includes the installation of extensive curtain walling to stairwells and a panoramic

First glimpse inside new city hotel Continued from PAGE 1 The remainder of the site was acquired privately by Lexington. Mr Larvin said: “The history of DoubleTree hotels is redevelopments and refurbishments and there are only two in the UK that are new-builds – Lincoln and now Hull. “This hotel design will be bespoke to Hull and it is great to be able to share these artists’ impressions that will give people an idea of what they will see when the hotel opens next autumn.” Planning permission for the new hotel was granted in July last year. The manufacturer of its modular form, CIMC, is based in China and was the construction company behind the first modular hotel at Bristol Airport, developed under the Hampton by Hilton brand. CIMC’s innovative modular technique significantly reduces the time taken for construction by manu-

facturing and assembling portions of the hotel, including guest rooms and hallways, in China, before transporting them to the final site for assembly. At least 100 new jobs will be created at the Hull hotel. Another 400 positions will be created during the construction phase. Councillor Stephen Brady, the leader of Hull City Council, said: “This is a milestone in the regeneration of our city centre. “The DoubleTree by Hilton brand will attract more visitors and business users to stay in the heart of our city, and the impressive conference facility will do likewise. “I’m delighted to see that construction has started and the big vote of confidence in our city that this represents. “I’m pleased to see that plenty of local firms are going to get work from this major construction project and I wish all concerned every success.”

It has been in business for more than 45 years, and consists of four divisions: EYG Domestic, EYG Commercial, EYG Trade and EYG Solar. EYG is based in Hull and manufactures thousands of windows and glass units every week. It employs more than 300 people, with seven branches across the country. glass-walled restaurant and bar overlooking the airport, is now almost 50 per cent complete, with more than 500 external windows installed and the curtain walling started. EYG Commercial, part of the EYG Group of businesses, has had its most successful year of business in 2016, including securing the largest single contract in its history – a £5.13m deal to glaze one of the UK’s biggest care homes for the St Monica Trust in Bristol. It has also provided glazing for four further Premier Inn developments in Cirencester, Chipping Norton, Sunderland and Weymouth. EYG’s domestic business has also enjoyed great success over the past 12 months, with sales on mainstream products such as windows, conservatories, orangeries and doors showing more than 22 per cent growth year on year.

Venues investing in area to provide square meals Dessert specialists’ arrival will be followed by major pizza brand By Debbie Hall Business Reporter d.hall@hulldailymail.co.uk

THE transformation of a city centre square in Hull is heading for completion with the arrival of two of the UK’s biggest and most family-friendly names in modern dining trends. Kaspa’s Desserts has just opened in Paragon Square, with the creation of 30 jobs. Domino’s Pizza is now being fitted out in the premises next door and is on schedule to open next month. Paul White, agency director at Garness Jones, said the two ventures will completely change the dynamic of Paragon Square and can also encourage other top brands to invest in the city centre and help to drive the success of City of Culture. He said: “It has taken a long time but the investment in Paragon Square is now really starting to bear fruit in time for the City of Culture year. “Stanley’s Brasserie has been in place for seven years and there has been a lot of activity with the neighbouring properties as the rest of the square has taken shape. “The result is an impressive new look and a completely new atmosphere.” Regent House Estates Ltd, the owners of the property which stretches from Paragon Square along Ferensway to Anlaby Road, were last week awarded a Good Mark by Hull Civic Society for their restoration of the entire

But for years the image of Paragon Square for many people visiting the city centre has been negative, and the owners have risen to the challenge of making wholesale changes. A project managed by Ian Hodges & Co has seen run-down properties renovated and in some cases demolished and rebuilt, with all the improvements respecting the tradition and heritage of the original buildings. In Paragon Square itself, Regent House Estates worked closely with Hull City Council’s conservation team and with the Royal British Legion to remove the benches, which had become a magnet for street drinkers, and

to pave the area. As letting agents for the properties, Garness Jones were then able to promote two stylish and high quality buildings with space for al fresco dining. Kaspa’s Desserts styles itself as the king of hot and cold treats from waffles and crepes to sundaes and smoothies, from single servings to a Birthday Extravaganza, which will feed a party of children – or a mighty big appetite. The Kaspa’s franchise kicked off in London and is now being rolled out in Yorkshire. Hull is the region’s front runner with a restaurant which can seat 88 people, with striking pink and black booths on two floors and a

small area for takeaway service. Hannah Foster, operations manager of the Yorkshire network of outlets, said: “We are very proud of our product and of our restaurant and we hope to open another in Hull next year along with more in other Yorkshire cities.” Domino’s Pizza already has a number of takeaway outlets in the Hull area but the company is also expanding into restaurants and the Paragon Square site will be one of the first in the UK. Mr White said: “You have to cast your mind a long way back to remember the old Paragon Square. The transformation has been gradual with the removal of the old benches to create an area which encourages outdoor dining, and the arrival of Kaspa’s Desserts and Domino’s Pizza can complete that process. “They are two huge brands which are real family favourites. They are also in a prime location, highly visible to the thousands of people using the transport interchange and travelling along Ferensway, and that will help them attract a new clientele to the Paragon Street area.” Kathryn Shillito, HullBID city centre manager, said: “Regent House Properties have demonstrated great determination and real vision in redeveloping these sites and bringing in exactly the right sort of businesses. “The combination of gelato and pizza is a real crowd-puller, as is the fact that both businesses will be open during the day and well into the evening, seven days a week.”

CHALLENGE: Tony van der Vliet.

Tony swaps shops for cycles in 700k ride CHARITY: The operations manager at St Stephen’s shopping centre in Hull, Tony van der Vliet, is to take part in a 700k charity cycle ride this weekend. The King’s Cross Cycle to MAPIC international retail real estate show, in Cannes, is Club Peloton’s annual charity cycling challenge for the retail property sector. This year’s event starts on Friday and the route, with almost 7,000m of climbing, will take riders from the medieval town of Girona, across undulating hills along the east coast of Spain, to Cannes and the beaches of southern France. The cyclists – all professionals working in the retail property industry – will then swap their lycra for business suits to attend the MAPIC retail fair. Mr van der Vliet said: “I am taking part in the MAPIC ride for the opportunity to raise some money for a fantastic cause – CORAM. “It will be wonderful to cycle with a likeminded bunch of people on beautiful European roads.” Jim Harris, centre manager at St Stephen’s, said: “We are pleased that Tony has agreed to represent St Stephen’s at MAPIC and take part in this challenge for a great charity. “The entire St Stephen’s team are proud of his commitment and dedication and hope he raises lots of money for the charity.” Anyone who would like to sponsor Mr van der Vliet should visit race-nation.com/sponsor/e/62115/ ■ CORAM is one of England’s oldest children’s charities and works to improve the lives of the UK’s most vulnerable children and young people.

Hull-based commercial property developer Tom Healey, director of Stoneferry Estates, outlines ten of the biggest benefits of being in the Humber Enterprise Zone value of £275,000 per business over a five-year period – helping to improve cash flow and profitability in the hardest earlier years of trading.

Home to the UK’s 6 busiest ports:

As well as boasting the UK’s busiest ports in terms of tonnage (Hull, Grimsby & Immingham), the Humber Estuary also has the country’s furthest inland port at Goole, ideally located for great road links to the M62 and M1 north and south.

At the heart of the 7 offshore wind industry:

With the port of Grimsby now a rapidly growing operations and maintenance centre for the offshore wind industry, 80 per cent of all North Sea wind farms and 60 per cent of the European

It’s estimated that 4,100 jobs will have been created when the wind turbine projects are complete – providing a facility for the manufacture, storage, assembly and deployment of the next generation of offshore energy.

renewable energy market is within 12 hours reach of the Humber.

8 A buzz of activity:

It may be small in comparison to Gatwick or Heathrow, but Humberside Airport is now home to the UK’s second busiest heliport – thanks to the fact it serves the offshore wind, oil and gas industries.

Tax relief for capital 9 investments:

Up to 100 per cent enhanced capital allowances is available to certain businesses making large investments in plant or machinery – helping to alleviate the associated costs of business growth.

Anchor tenant welcome STONEFERRY Estates is a commercial property developer based in Hull, which was first established in 1992. It is currently looking for an anchor tenant for its Kingston Parklands development, a commercial property within the Humber Enterprise Zone, which can be built bespoke to the needs of any company. It is located on the old Hedon Road Maternity Hospital site in Hull.

PLUSES: Stoneferry Estates director Tom Healey.

It’s much easier to get planning 10 permission:

Because of the Local Development Orders which exist in Enterprise Zones, granting automatic planning permission is easy for certain developments – such as the new 11.2-acre Kingston Parklands development by Stoneferry Estates on the site of the old Hedon Road Maternity Hospital in Hull. Small space, big demand Sale highlights hunger for similar sites THE sale of a building that had sat empty for seven years at the side of East Yorkshire’s busiest road signals a surge in demand for office space, according to Garness Jones chartered surveyors. But Paul White, agency director at the Hull-based firm, says supply is struggling to meet the needs of businesses looking to relocate. He said: “Larger office and business parks have been supported with investment from the European Regional Development Fund but the heaviest demand at the moment is for smaller space of between 1,000sq ft and 3,000sq ft in secondary areas. “One of the factors behind the current shortage is the conversion of some office space for residential use, a practice adopted by some property owners to bring empty buildings back into use.”

By Debbie Hall Business Reporter d.hall@hulldailymail.co.uk

Lack of choice was the main issue faced by Garness Jones when the firm was instructed to find new premises for Charles and William Draper for their expanding businesses, SureStaffing UK and Brothers Recruitment. Both are delighted with the move into a three-storey property at the side of the A63 and close to Hull city centre. Charles Draper, managing director of blue-collar recruitment specialists SureStaffing, said: “We set Garness Jones the challenge of finding an office complex that would not only meet our needs now, but also as we grow further in the future. “The 4,500sq ft building they identified is ideal and located alongside

We look forward to welcoming people who are seeking new jobs or a lifestyle change as we continue to support them in their search for work.” Mr White said Garness Jones had to act quickly to complete the deal, even though the property had been vacant since 2009. He said: “It was renovated as high quality offices years ago but then the market crashed and there was no demand. “It’s been waiting for someone like Charles and William to come along, but the scenario now is completely

different with increasing demand for freehold office space and not enough supply. “We are aware of a number of SMEs who are looking to relocate for various reasons but can’t find the right premises. “Charles and William have done an excellent job of bringing this building back into use. “The thing that really strikes you is the external appearance – they have lifted the profile of the building and in such a busy location it promotes the businesses very effectively.”

AN ELECTRICAL business has marked the anniversary of its takeover by embarking on a housing renovation project, which is the biggest contract in its history. Merlx, which is based in Williamson Street, east Hull, is working on improvements to more than 300 homes in the Preston Road area of the city, having been appointed by the main contractor Willmott Dixon. Chris Fawley, who completed the acquisition of Merlx in September last year and is now the company’s electrical services director, said the year has brought consolidation followed by expansion in the commercial and residential property sectors. His first step was to change the status of his workforce from sub-contractors to employees, including a dedicated fire alarm and emergency lighting specialist. Mr Fawley said: “We wanted to employ people ourselves. It makes the overheads a bit higher but we were confident we could keep everybody busy and that has certainly been the case.” The work at Preston Road is part of a £35m contract awarded to Willmott Dixon by Hull City Council to improve more than 2,000 homes across the city. The current phase, which will be completed early next year, involves recladding the properties to retain the heat and improve the look. Mr Fawley said: “Our part of the job is to remove any electrical fittings from the outside of the properties and put them back again afterwards. “The houses are all occupied, which means we have to be sensitive to the routines of the

people who live there. We started our work in September and it will run into next year. “I did some work for Willmott Dixon years ago and they approached us for this. “We have been going for bigger contracts and that is making a difference to the company – this is the biggest contract we have ever taken on.” Merlx has also completed projects for longterm clients including Smith & Nephew, building on a relationship which began when the previous owner, Tony Douglass, was brought in to install specialist machinery at sites in Hull and China. The company also carries out maintenance and repair work for property agents including Garness Jones, Larards Lets and Reeds Rains and has added Trinity Estates to the list since Mr Fawley took over. Another project involved fitting a door entry system at Friary Chambers in Whitefriargate, Hull, where the owner Trinity House is creating 21 apartments. Mr Fawley spent 30 years building electrical businesses for companies throughout Yorkshire before deciding to set up on his own. He looked at a number of possible purchases before agreeing the deal for Merlx and he underlined his commitment by taking a new, three-year lease on the premises and setting out a five-year plan to double the size of the business. He said: “The work for Willmott Dixon demonstrates the strength of my contacts and the all-round success of the business is evidence of the reputation which Merlx has built up since Tony started the business 14 years ago. “He’s now set up his own property development and refurbishment company and we work for him as well.”

Developers deliver £4m base to parcel company Distribution depot will have capacity to handle 20,000 packages a day By Debbie Hall Business Reporter d.hall@hulldailymail.co.uk

UK PARCEL delivery company DPD has taken possession of a new distribution depot in Howden, built by leading property developer the Horncastle Group PLC. The 47,145sq ft unit, in Ozone Business Park, near junction 37 of the M62, will create 50 jobs and forms a hub for the company’s parcel distribution services across East Yorkshire and the wider region. The £4m development sits on a 4.5-acre site and includes a distribution warehouse, 6,716sq ft of office space, 59 van and HGV trailer parking spaces and 60 car parking spaces. Once fully operational, the facility will be able to process up to 20,000 packages a day for delivery to residential and business addresses within a 50-mile radius of Howden. Ian Hodges, managing director of Horncastle, said he was delighted that Ozone Business Park had attracted another top, national company, which was testament to its fantastic location and the quality of facilities available. Mr Hodges said: “DPD is a very forward-thinking company and had a very clear vision as to what they wanted to create with this development. “We worked closely with them to ensure those ideas were implemented and the design of the distribution depot promoted the most efficient processes in the parcel distribution industry. “The building was completed on schedule and to budget, enabling DPD to take possession in advance of their busiest seasonal period.” The principal contractor on the scheme was Hull company Hobson and Porter. DPD moved from its former site in Goole to the new premises, to accommodate the company’s significant growth plans, following the success of its unique Predict service.

Predict notifies customers of their one-hour delivery slot in advance, so that they do not have to wait in all day for a parcel. Louise Ferguson, general manager of property at DPD, said the new state-of-the-art facility would enable the company to provide an unparalleled parcel delivery service across East Yorkshire and the wider region. Ms Ferguson said: “This investment enables us to meet our growing business needs as well as providing significant extra local employment. “We’re delighted to take possession of our new distribution hub.” Ozone Business Park is a 32-acre site based on the A614 and is part of the Goole/Howden employment hub. It is home to a number of big-name companies, including Warburtons and Image Data. Horncastle will retain ownership of the building and lease it to DPD on a long-term agreement. Mr Hodges said Horncastle always tried to use local contractors whenever possible. “Hobson and Porter ensured the build process ran smoothly and everything went according to plan,” he said.

SEARCH IS ON FOR BRIGHTEST GREEN TEAMS By Debbie Hall

Business Reporter d.hall@hulldailymail.co.uk

IT IS the most important date on the region’s clean power calendar. The Humber Renewables Awards is returning for a sixth year and will recognise success across nine categories, honouring firms large and small for doing their bit to make this area a fulcrum of green energy. With prizes up for grabs for educators, builders and innovators, the competition promises to reward the best of the best, with the celebration taking place at The Deep on Thursday, March 9, 2017. A top speaker is being lined up and the dinner will gather together industry leaders and experts from across the region and beyond. The awards event is again being sponsored by Siemens, which is

Jason Speedy is the director of the energy giant’s turbine blade factory, which is due to mark the production of the first blade, wholly manufactured at the new facility, next month. He said: “Our investment in Hull is one of Siemens’ largest anywhere in the world and is the city’s biggest

ever inward investment. “We’re here because Hull is perfectly positioned in close proximity to the huge offshore wind farms in the North Sea. “We also believed we would be coming to an area with a supportive environment for our investment and where we could build a skilled workforce to develop a new industry for the UK.

“We’re delighted our confidence has proven to be well founded. “The support we have received has been outstanding. “We have been made to feel very welcome and we believe that, in return, we have demonstrated our commitment to maximise our positive impact on the city and region, its economy, communities and people.” Mr Speedy said: “Our greatest local impact will be in new jobs and we are well on the way to our target to employ 1,000 people across our operations at Alexandra Dock. “We’re delighted to report that well over 90 per cent of the people we have recruited are from the Hull area. “We have been absolutely over-

whelmed by the response to the jobs we have created, with more than 23,000 applications so far. “That’s an incredible number and has resulted in us recruiting a workforce of truly amazing people. “We are so excited by what they will enable us to achieve in Hull. “Our headline sponsorship of the Humber Renewables Awards is part of our commitment to put down roots in the Hull area and contribute to the growth of the local economy, above and beyond our direct investment.” Siemens’ factory and port area will undertake blade manufacturing, assembly, load-out and servicing on behalf of the UK offshore wind industry and is creating 1,000 direct jobs in the region.

he Humber Renewables Awards is now entering its sixth year and the field of potential applicants is stronger than ever. Mail publisher Mike Pennington said it was important to reward the hard work by those putting the Humber region on the map as the UK’s Energy Estuary. He said: “When these awards started, the idea we could be a world leader in green energy was no more than a dream. “But today, we are an absolutely key part of Britain’s drive to be a greener nation.” Mr Pennington said the £310m Green Port Hull development and regeneration of Alexandra Dock, by Siemens and Associated British Ports, was a standout example of the kind of investment that was taking place in the renewables sector and which had the potential to be the single biggest influence on Hull’s economy for generations. “Our success is due to the efforts of many dedicated businesses, large and small, and we’re looking forward to giving them some well-deserved recognition,” he said. Mr Pennington thanked all the competition’s sponsors for their support, and said it showed the region was behind their green ambitions. He said: “Staging these awards would not be possible without the dedicated backing of firms from all industries. “The companies that are struggling to make green power a profitable and successful field should take heart from their commitment. “The road may be hard but they are not alone.” Below are this year’s award categories, sponsors and criteria.

How to enter the awards THE AWARD nominations are now open and entries must be submitted by Wednesday, February 8. The awards ceremony will be held on Thursday, March 9. Visit www.hulldailymail.co.uk/ renewableawards to find the full criteria for every award and how to enter.

The winner will be able to demonstrate fast growth, a healthy profit and a solid plan for the future. Michael Smith, managing director of Cobus, said: “Cobus is delighted to be, once again, supporting these prestigious awards for the sixth year running. “As a business that has been trading strongly for more than 25 years, we recognise the hard work, commitment and effort needed to be a successful business in today’s competitive marketplace.”

This prize is for the designers and manufacturers behind the best green energy installations. Judges will be looking for a winning project that produces clean power, is built to the highest of standards and shows off the region’s world-class expertise. Joe Tandey, of PureSpeed, said: “PureSpeed is proud to sponsor the award for Best Renewable Energy Project or Installation. “This category is important as these organisations pushing forward with designing and using green solutions are showing the lead others need to follow. “PureSpeed recognises this and will itself be looking to work more efficiently to minimise its impact on the environment.”

Richard Burgess, deputy managing director at Spencer Group, said: “We’re proud to promote the region’s green energy credentials, both through our projects and support for initiatives such as the Humber Renewables Awards. “Our sponsorship is especially relevant while we are part of the delivery team for the £200m Energy Works power plant in Hull, a renewable energy scheme we have developed from concept through to construction. “We’re pleased to have the opportunity to recognise others who engage constructively with the community to promote sustainable technologies.” 2016 winner: RES

Gary Warke MBE, chief executive of Hull College Group, said: “We’re proud to support the Humber Renewables Awards, particularly within the category of Renewables Education. “The college works closely with local companies to ensure the courses we provide are industry-relevant and our partnership with Siemens, including the Composites Training Centre and Apprenticeship Programme, reflects the quality of our training and our commitment to growing the high level of skills needed for the region to prosper.”

to bring down costs – and that is where this award comes in. It will reward firms of any size that go out of their way to be more efficient and are not afraid to come up with unusual approaches. Judges will be looking to see how innovation has made a real difference to their work. Simon Bird, ABP Director Humber, said: “The Humber is at the forefront of the UK’s ‘green revolution’ and ABP is heavily involved in the renewable energy sector, from its £150m investment in the Siemens development on Alexandra Dock in Hull, to the ground-breaking Immingham Renewable Fuels Terminal, which handles millions of tonnes of biomass each year for Drax and 2016 winner: Heta. the offshore wind operations and Renewables maintenance activity at the port Innovation in Grimsby. “Together we lead the way as the Category sponsor: ABP country’s ‘Energy Estuary’ and If green energy is ever going to that inspires confidence and compete with fossil fuels, it needs encourages others to innovate

Category sponsor: KRL Group

This new category focuses on an individual or a company that has recently entered the renewables market and has shown drive to seize opportunities in the industry. The judges will be looking for an example of the enterprise and imagination which will help define the region’s renewables future.

The winner of this award will have a passionate focus on promoting the renewables industry. It could be an individual, public sector body or company – the key is a real focus on making the Humber the Energy Estuary. They will have tirelessly campaigned to promote green power. This is a special award, and no nominations will be accepted. Judges will pick a winner they feel is most deserving. Jason Speedy, Siemens’ Hull blade factory director, said: “The Humber’s renewables reputation is about much more than Siemens and sponsoring these awards is just one way in which we are supporting and promoting the region’s green energy credentials. “We see these awards as playing an important role in showcasing and rewarding the region’s green energy champions and maintaining the momentum of the region as a leading renewables hub.”

This award’s winner will be a regional firm with at least 50 employees and bold ambitions to become even bigger. It could be looking to capitalise on Siemens’ investment through opportunities on land or at sea, or working in a totally different field. George Baker, managing director of KRL Group, said: “We are delighted to once again support these awards. “This industry is increasingly important to the future of our region, so we want to recognise the businesses that make it a success. 2016 winner: Mike Cargill, director of “KRL is a big believer in green UK Stem Ltd

RENEWABLES AWARDS 2017

Glitzy night to celebrate stars of the sector Business reporter Debbie Hall looks back at last year’s award ceremony COMPANIES with the strongest green credentials battled it out to take the titles in the 2016 Humber Renewables and Green Energy Awards. The event held in March at The Deep saw worthy finalists competing for places, the ultimate winners being chosen by a panel of experts. Taking the title for Best Renewable Energy Project or installation was E.on, for its Humber Gateway offshore wind farm. The judges said this project showed lots of community engagement but also brought benefits to many other companies. They said: “The Humber Gateway offshore wind farm has had a huge impact on the local area, as well as the wider supply chain.” Excellence in Renewable Skills and Training was perfectly demonstrated by Hull College Group, which took this particular honour. The judges were impressed that Hull College’s investment of more than £6m over five years to develop green skills had helped it to secure the significant, and very competitive, Siemens training contract, something that would continue to benefit local learners for years to come. The panel said: “The winner of this award has invested a lot of time, energy and money to ensure it can equip local people with the skills needed to capitalise on renewables opportunities.” Giving young people the skills they need is one of the key cogs in making the renewables agenda take off, which is why Humberside Engineering Training Association (Heta) was awarded the Renewables Education title for 2016. Its Supergrid project challenged primary and secondary students across the region to

design, build and operate their own table-top wind farm and taught them basic business principles, such as costs, pricing and profit and loss. The judging panel said Heta was a “clear winner” in its category. EYG Solar stepped up to take Small Business of the Year at the 2016 awards. Having developed from humble beginnings 45 years earlier, the glazing company had become a national success story with an annual turnover of £18m.

Judges said EYG Solar was very specific about what it offered, what it had achieved and the opportunities for the business going forward, backed up by “very detailed and healthy figures”, showing much promise for the future. The Green Construction title went to Hall Renewables, thanks to a portfolio of worth that included everything from wall insulation and LED lighting to a huge biomass heating system at Wykeham Abbey. Judges said Hall had “made huge strides” in the renewables sector, and were pleased to see that engaging apprentices remained at the heart of the company’s operations. Bio-D, with its alternative household cleaning products, was the overall winner in the Innovation category. Judges recognised the company’s work in reducing environmental impact, with its eco-friendly range being distributed to 19 countries. A recent surge in growth across Associated British Ports’ (ABP) four ports and much investment in the burgeoning renewables industry – including £150m in Green Port Hull – helped the company scoop the title of Medium/Large Business of the Year. Judges said ABP had helped cement the region’s reputation as the Energy Estuary, saying: “ABP’s investment has not only supported a significant number of direct jobs, but has also encouraged others to invest, creating hundreds of jobs throughout the wider supply chain.” Renewable energy provider RES won the Engaging the Community Award in recognition of the successful establishment of the

Roos Wind Farm Community Benefit Fund. The judges said this winner went above and beyond what was expected of them in terms of community engagement, bringing real, tangible benefits to the local area. The panel said: “Engaging with the community was, in part, something RES was required to do. However, the organisation did far, far more than the basic requirements.” A special award for Renewables Champion went to Mike Cargill, of UK Stem Ltd. Agreed unanimously by the panel – this award does not take nominations but is the “most deserving” choice in the judges’ opinion – the title went to Mr Cargill for his commitment to education and training and his skills as an “inspiring educator”. The panel said: “The champion award recognises an individual, company or institution that is supporting the sector and helping the region become known as a capital for renewables work and ideas.”

Building society’s chief to leave after five years Boss announces plan to step down after ‘successful’ period in at the helm By Debbie Hall

‘Unrivalled service’

Business Reporter d.hall@hulldailymail.co.uk

THE chief executive of Beverley Building Society has today announced he will be stepping down after the AGM in April 2017. Peter Myers joined the Society in September 2011, delivering a five-year strategic plan with a “back to the future” approach – local people, looking after local people’s mortgages and savings accounts. Throughout this time under Mr Myers’ leadership, the society focussed on engaging members, remaining an integral part of the local events calendar, in particular leveraging its mutual heritage. The Beverley supports community events and charities and Mr Myers sees an opportunity for his successor to build on the goodwill generated, particularly during this year’s 150th anniversary celebrations, which have raised more than £20,000 for charity partner Action Duchenne. Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) is a life-limiting condition which affects approximately one in every 3,500 live male births. Action Duchenne was founded in 2001 to fund research to find a cure or viable treatments for DMD. Mr Myers said: “I have thoroughly enjoyed leading the society in the achievement of a clear vision and strategic plan along with the executive team.

FORMED in 1866, Beverley Building Society is one of the oldest building societies in the UK, with assets of more than £183m. The Society prides itself on being a strong independent mutual that offers straightforward products, competitive interest rates and an unrivalled level of personal service. OUTGOING: Peter Myers. “We have worked collaboratively with the board and chairman, the committees of the board, key stakeholders and regulators for the benefit of the members and the ongoing sustainable future of the Society. “The five-year plan has been hugely successful and I feel satisfied that I am leaving The Beverley in a stronger position than ever before. “This now means I can pursue a portfolio of non-executive director opportunities, two of which are Finance Yorkshire and Leeds NHS. “From a personal point of view I will get back into triathlon, with more time for training at a level that will enable me to achieve my goal of getting back into the top ten in my age group. “The timing seems perfect as we approach

the close of 2016, having celebrated 150 years in the heart of the community in Beverley.” An external recruitment process is now under way, led by the chairman Brian Young, who intends to introduce the new chief executive to members in April. Mr Young said: “As chief executive for the past five years, Peter has led the Society with passion, great skill and effectiveness. “The strategic plan that Peter has created and delivered, with the executive team, supported by the non-executives, places The Beverley in a very strong position and we can now consider the next phase of strategy, based on his success. “Although this represents a period of transition for Beverley Building Society, our members can feel assured they will not experience any change in the usual outstanding level of service.”

JAMES Legal Solicitors, based in Hedon Road, east Hull, has promoted senior solicitor Gary Swann to a leading role at the firm, as a result of its ongoing expansion. The move follows a 400 per cent increase in the company’s size over the past five years. Owner and solicitor Nick Miller said James Legal is ripe for expansion, having recorded its busiest year yet in 2016 – thanks in part to what he has previously dubbed a “perfect storm of positivity” surrounding Hull’s hosting of UK City of Culture in 2017. Mr Miller said: “Expanding James Legal has always been my vision, but we’ve been keen to wait until the right time to go ahead. “We pride ourselves on taking a fresh approach to law, and that means having the right people in the right roles – not just in terms of their legal expertise but, equally importantly, their personality, too. “We aim to be people first and lawyers second, taking the time to really get to know our clients and their businesses and not only building long-term relationships with them, but also helping them in a way which is right for them and their business.” Mr Swann is the second director to be

appointed by James Legal this year, with senior solicitor Kelly Bannister, who specialises in commercial property, being appointed earlier. The firm now employs a total of 22 people, compared with just five in 2011, and is currently looking to recruit another four lawyers by the beginning of next year. Mr Miller said the firm was ready to consider taking this successful Hull brand into new territories, with the possibility of a new office in North Lincolnshire. He said: “Gary is the epitome of what we stand for – a genuinely nice guy who is also a very strong litigation solicitor with many decades of legal and tactical experience, who stops at nothing to represent our clients’ best interests. “I’m really proud to see him take up this important leadership role within our team, and excited to see him open the next chapter for our firm over the year ahead.” Mr Swann said: “At my stage of a legal career, many people would be thinking of winding down and taking things a bit easier. However, for me it’s totally the opposite. “I’m passionate about our team and what James Legal brings to law, and the work this enables me to do with clients in Hull and surrounding area. “Having the opportunity to champion our expansion with a possible new office further afield, and make the James Legal experience available to more people, is a real privilege for me and I can’t wait to bring it to fruition.”

Aldercote, based in Woodhouse Street, east Hull, secured a £25,000 order for a demonstrator access platform mounted to a free issue Transit van, via Arcon.pl, its newly appointed Polish dealer for Aldercote Access Platform Products. Aldercote’s debut in Poland follows success in other markets abroad, including the provision of mining support vehicles to African nations. Founded in 2001 by directors and brothers David and Paul Dillon, Aldercote now employs 15 staff in the manufacture of specialist vehicles with powered access platforms tailored to the requirements of customers in an increasingly wide range of sectors. David Dillon said the firm’s export success emanated from DIT (formerly UK Trade & Investment) supporting its research of new markets.

This included attendance at a major trade exhibition called Energetab in Poland at which Aldercote displayed its demonstrator van with mounted access platform. TRANSPARENT: Adrian Smith says companies should be able to see the value of an area easily – just like when playing Monopoly.

Firms warned after fake claims on business rates Companies report bogus callers claiming to be local authority BUSINESS owners are being warned to beware of bogus callers who are aiming to cash in on confusion around changes in rateable values. Adrian Smith Rating Ltd (ASR) was alerted by two clients who received calls from people claiming to represent local authorities and saying they could reduce rates liabilities. In each case, the callers backtracked when the businesses said they would refer the matter to ASR, based in Keyingham. The revaluation of business rates will take effect on April 1, 2017 and businesses have been able to find out their draft rateable value since October. Adrian Smith, founder of ASR, said the fact that there has not been a revaluation since 2010 means some businesses could face significant changes. He said: “If you pay business

rates they will almost certainly change. “Many significant economic events have occurred since the last revaluation and they could have a major impact when it comes to assessing a fair rateable value. “The changes could be up or down and they could be substantial. “They will certainly influence business budget decisions and they may warrant an appeal, particularly if errors have been made.” Mr Smith said: “The potential for confusion presents an opportunity for unscrupulous operators to exploit the lack of awareness among business owners,

Mr Smith said: “Another client received a call from a man claiming to be from the council and asking to speak to the business owner because they had calculated that the rateable was incorrect and they could reduce it. “She told the caller that if they were really from the local authority they would know who the business owner was.” Mr Smith said firms did not know whether the new rateable values were fair and reasonable. “What the system should do is enable you to identify and check the evidence used to arrive at the valuations,” he said. “It’s a bit like a Monopoly board. You should be able to see the value and desirability of an area very quickly and work out whether you’re a Mayfair, an Old Kent Road or somewhere in between.”

SPEAKER: MP Andrew Percy.

NORTHERN LIGHTS LEADING THE WAY

I

t was a chance to reflect on another great year of doing business in Hull and East Yorkshire. While for 16 winners of this year’s Hull Daily Mail Business Awards it was definitely a night to remember, for the rest of the audience at the glittering occasion, it was also an opportunity to hear a wealth of inspiring stories about people and companies across the region. The Mercure Hull Grange Park Hotel was again the venue for celebrating achievers from a broad spectrum of business. The event, held last Thursday evening before an audience of 400 people, was hosted by TV presenter and journalist Helen Fospero and attended by the competition’s judges and representatives of its numerous sponsors. Keynote speaker was MP for Brigg and Goole Andrew Percy, Parliamentary Minister for Local Growth and the Northern Powerhouse. Mr Percy opened his speech by saying: “When you become a minister, you certainly seem to get invited to lots of posh events.” Mr Percy, who lives in Airmyn, near Goole, was appointed UK Northern Powerhouse Minister during the setting up of Theresa May’s new Government in July. The aim of the Northern Powerhouse is to redress the North-South economic imbalance, and to attract investment into northern cities and towns. “I wanted a voice of the North in Government, not a voice of Government in the North,” said Mr Percy, who had just been visiting North Wales and Cheshire and hearing of the benefits of the Northern Powerhouse in the Cheshire context. “Where does Hull fit in to this?” he said. “Hull and East Yorkshire are genuinely at the heart of the Northern Powerhouse. “What we are trying to do is rebalance our economy.

It is the highlight of the region’s business calendar and the 2016 Hull Daily Mail Business Awards was a bigger and better ceremony than ever before. Debbie Hall reports on a night of success “We are seeing significant investment growth in the North, massive employment growth and lots of local growth deals to get the North moving,” he said. “People say why does Manchester get everything, and Leeds get everything? But what is happening there is of direct benefit to us in the northern economy. “It’s not just about core cities, it’s about all of the North and that’s where Hull comes in.” He told the audience: “Thank you for what you are doing to move this region forward. “We have more that unites us across the Humber than divides us.” A stunning video showing Hull at its most beautiful, made specially for the Hull Daily Mail Business Awards and shot by drone specialists Octovision, was premiered at the start of the evening and included messages from some of Hull’s most influential people. Mr Percy said it showed how much Hull had transformed over the years. “The video is so evangelical it could be played at a Trump rally,” Mr Percy said. “We have opportunities with Hull City of Culture to showcase what is going on here to the rest of the world. “We need to make sure that massive

advantage of a national and international stage next year is leveraged fully. “One thing we are sometimes guilty of is being a little bit negative. “I think we are in pretty good shape for where we want to be and we have to remember that. “When we are projecting to the world, we have to be unrelentingly positive and work collaboratively across the Humber. “Congratulations everyone here who is going out and building in this region and working on rebalancing the economy. “Thank you for everything you are doing, let’s work together next year to really go out and sell this city.” Mr Percy spoke about his childhood and growing up in Hull. “I was a paper boy delivering the Hull Daily Mail, growing up in the Bricknell area,” said Mr Percy, telling the audience how he discovered that he used to deliver the Chief Whip’s grandmother’s paper in National Avenue in the city. “There are very few regional papers that are as loved and read as the Hull Daily Mail,” he said. Mr Percy said he had been proud to have been educated in Hull at a school (William

Before being elected to Parliament, Mr Percy was a local school teacher who specialised in history. He served as a local councillor before becoming elected Conservative MP for Brigg and Goole in May 2010. His constituency covers parts of both East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire where he has strong ties to both work and family. In his Northern Powerhouse role, Mr Percy’s responsibilities include devolution deals, local growth, coastal communities, local enterprise partnership policy, enterprise zones, high streets, inward investment and infrastructure and resilience and emergencies.

Passion, talent and character are the values on which our success is built Business Reporter Debbie Hall reports on a night where the business community gathered to celebrate outstanding achievements CELEBRATING another great year for the local business community, the Hull Daily Mail Business Awards 2016 was heralded as a great success. Company leaders from across the region gathered for the occasion at the Mercure Hull Grange Park Hotel, in Willerby, which saw excellence honoured in an extended 16 categories this year. TV presenter Helen Fospero, who was hosting the event for a fifth year, said: “I’m proud to come from this region and to have lived in Hull during my days on Look North with Mr Levy. “Even though I’ve lived in London for a long time, this part of the world is still home. “Success here is built on passion, talent, grit and determination, but at its core – in my humble opinion – are the people and characters of East Yorkshire.” The night, which began with a Champagne reception for the 400 guests, saw the award presentations conducted in three parts, with a three-course meal served in the newly refurbished surroundings of the hotel’s International Suite. The room had been OCCASION: Mail editor Neil Hodgkinson.

lavishly dressed for the occasion by A Perfect Event. Mike Pennington, managing director/ regional publisher for Trinity Mirror’s Humber and Lincolnshire region, which includes the Hull Daily Mail, gave the welcome speech. He said: “The Hull Daily Mail Business Awards is where it all started for me when, five years ago, I decided to take them back in-house and develop them into one of the region’s most successful nights, recognising talent and the very best in business.” Mr Pennington talked about the strengths of the region and the Mail’s involvement in that success. “We have been very busy within the city supporting key projects and topics such as the Local Enterprise Partnership, City Leadership, the Fruit Market and C4DI development, Siemens’ progress, KCOM’s growth, Spencer Group’s expansion programme and many more significant strategies within the city, to name but a few. “We have been busy as a business trying to lead, innovate, develop, support and inspire, but above all talking up this great city and the legacy it is trying to develop.” Neil Hodgkinson, Hull Daily Mail editor, gave the introduction during which he spoke about the many positives seen across many market sectors and new names making their mark in business. He thanked the award sponsors and the judges – this year, an all-female panel.

Mr Hodgkinson said: “Hull College Group also deserve praise for once again designing and producing tonight’s winning trophies. “It just makes it that little bit special.” Following the announcements on the winners of the first 15 categories, the celebration evening culminated in the presentation of the Lifetime Contribution Award, sponsored and presented by KCOM. The recipient was Charlie Spencer OBE, executive chairman of Hull-based Spencer Group. Gary Young, executive vice-president of KCOM, introduced the award and a video was played, with testimonials from Gary

Thornton, Spencer Group’s chief operating officer; Paul Sewell, of Sewell Group, and Alan Johnson MP. Receiving the award, Mr Spencer thanked his wife Noreen, who started the business with him from the front room of their then home in Anlaby in 1989. He said: “She has been with me through thick and thin ever since and has been an absolute rock”. He also paid tribute to his late parents “who brought six children up believing they could do anything they wanted to do” and the inspiration of his older brother, John, who went into business before him and had

built a highly successful signs company. Mr Spencer said the success of Spencer Group was due to the great people in the business. “I’m really proud of everyone who works at Spencer Group. It’s a real privilege to work with them and it’s fun to go to work every day.” He added he was proudest of being a “Hull lad” and being part of the local business community, which did so much to contribute to the development of the city and region. “When I look around the business community I see a number of people in business giving their time and money just to make Hull the place it is,” he said. “That really is amazing. “Hull has got some great institutions, including the Hull Daily Mail, which plays a really important role in knitting that community together through events like this. They do a fantastic job.” He recalled seeing a picture in the Mail of him looking at a model of the Energy Works power plant, which has been developed by Spencer Group and is currently under construction on the site of a former cocoa mills in Hull. A reader had posted a comment online saying it showed “Charlie and his chocolate factory”. Mr Spencer said: “If you remember, Charlie got a golden ticket, and that’s how I see this. “Getting this award is a golden ticket for my membership of the Hull business community that I respect so much. “It’s a great honour.”

BUSINESS AWARDS 2016 CATEGORY 1: TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT

HELPING STAFF ENHANCE SKILLS PRAISE FOR PROVIDER’S COMPREHENSIVE APPROACH

E

mploying more than 700 people, Wescot’s particular approach means it is a different kind of debt collection agency. Working on behalf of clients in banking, utility, telecoms and retail, whose customers have fallen behind with their repayments, Wescot recognises that people are at the heart of everything it does – people who deserve to be respected and treated fairly. The company’s sector-leading personal development arrangements are built on this, too. Wescot developed a bespoke solution for its business – an advanced apprenticeship called

Providing Financial Services Level 3, which is equivalent to two A-levels. By investing time in reviewing its needs, Wescot was able to design programmes to national standards, integrating into its pre-existing competency framework and internal training. “As a result, we support achievement and growth of the competence of the people who participate,” said the entry. “So far, with help from Genius People, we have invested £290,000 in our colleagues, and are confident we shall be able to add a further £225,000 to that in 2016-17.” Wescot developed modules spe-

cific to the demanding role of supporting customers in financial difficulties; others included verbal, numeric and technology skills. Positive colleague response has encouraged others to take the apprenticeship route. The business awards judges said this was “a very comprehensive entry” from a company that recognised people who wanted to grow within the organisations, and that showed its commitment to training people in what must be a difficult sector to work. Nicola Baker, from category sponsor the University of Hull, announced the winner.

CATEGORY 2: EXPORTER OF THE YEAR

ALL ALE INTERNATIONAL CLASS BREWER’S EXPORTING ENDEAVOURS ARE REWARDED

J

udges praised this impressive and unique entry from Wold Top Brewery, which was launched in 2003 and brews award-winning ales from its farm-based brewery in the Yorkshire Wolds. From being a regional brewery with a strong local following, Wold Top has replicated that success globally, with exports of bottled and cask beer accounting for 20 per cent of its turnover in 2014-15. The brewery developed the business into overseas markets to capitalise on the popularity of English-style beers and to benefit from favourable duty and VAT rates.

Wold Top has worked hard over the past three years to forge links with partner companies in Europe and worldwide and now exports a range of bottled beers to Italy, Sweden, Norway, Finland, The Falkland Islands, Ireland and Canada. It was proud to be the only brewery to be invited by UK Trade & Investment – now the Department of Trade and Industry – to showcase its beer at a ministerial reception to launch Exporting Is Great Week. Success has not come without its challenges, particularly in terms of meeting demand and shelf life, but Wold Top has addressed the former by invest-

ing £600,000 in a new brewing plant that has doubled capacity, and the latter with meticulous production planning. Three members of the Wold Top management team are taking Italian lessons so that they can converse more effectively with customers in their largest export market. Earlier this year, Wold Top hosted a brewery visit from its distributor’s sales team and helped to train team members in the nuances of English beer. The judging panel enjoyed the story of a local company enjoying “significant” export success. The award was sponsored by ABP.

BUSINESS AWARDS 2016 CATEGORY 3: COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

ABILITY TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE GENEROUS IT FIRM STANDS OUT FROM THE CROWD

A

bility IT’s core vision is to provide professional and proactive technology solutions to SMEs and organisations across Hull and the East Riding – but it is also very active in giving back to the community. This company is passionate about helping numerous charity organisations – its director is a trustee of a local charity and is, therefore, knowledgeable about the kind of support required. Ability’s community support is year-round and includes direct involvement of staff, from participating in and fundraising for sleeping rough initiative Sleepeasy, to supporting Herib (Hull

and East Riding Institute for the Blind) in its various fundraising activities. Ability donated and installed an IT solution for local breast cancer charity HER Breast Friends this summer. The company gives discounted rates to charities and additional support, such as marketing assistance and advice, sharing contacts and posts on social media. Ability donates hours of free social media training to local charities and organisations and has this year implemented a new work experience programme to support local young people. As part of the company

strategy to grow and develop, Ability supports work placements. One of its work experience candidates recently become employed as its new apprentice IT support engineer. Going the extra mile for those in the community is inherent in everything Ability does. The judges said this company’s contribution had been financial but, much more than that, it had been giving with its time. “Community is threaded through this company, it is part of its DNA,” they said. Charlie Strickland, of Arco, sponsors of this category, announced the winner.

A TOP-DRAWER PERFORMANCE FURNITURE-MAKER EMBRACES TECHNOLOGY TO GROW

A

real determination to succeed as well as an innovative approach won Kingstown Furniture the Innovation an Technology Award. Kingstown is the UK’s leading manufacturer of ready assembled furniture, employing 360 staff at its 11-acre site in east Hull. This year, the company is celebrating its 40th year in business, with a turnover in excess of £30m, but it is not resting on its laurels. In January, it relaunched its KT range of bedroom and lounge furniture, with innovative new designs made possible by a

streamlined process and cutting-edge technology. With a growth of 100 per cent in its first two months, KT has allowed Kingstown to get a foothold in a new marketplace. Mike Sharp, Kingstown’s founder and now chairman, maintains a strong vision to build and distribute furniture with an emphasis placed on innovation, design, technology and value for money. All of Kingstown’s furniture is made in Britain and Mike’s vision is ingrained into all staff who strive for the same results. Kingstown wanted to expand its reach and target a new audience: young, modern people and

families who want to purchase on-trend, affordable furniture. A vision of innovation and a desire to stay one step ahead of the market meant extensive research from around the globe to develop a range that was driven by customer demand and the latest trends. Cutting-edge CGI and CAD technology, a state-of-the-art prototype shop and new machinery have all been part of Kingstown’s development strategy. The judges said: “This company has used technology to innovate and move it into the next generation.” The category was sponsored by BP.

BUSINESS AWARDS 2016 CATEGORY 5: GREEN

GREEN TEAM REIGNING SUPREME FIRM RECOGNISED FOR ENERGY-SAVING SOLUTIONS

J

udges said this entry “ticked all the boxes” when it came to the Green Award criteria of the Hull Daily Mail Business Awards. Established in 2007, Pure Renewables is one of the longest-established renewable energy companies in the country. Operating throughout the Yorkshire and the Humber, as well as in Lincolnshire and Cumbria, the company works in the domestic and commercial markets and in the new-build and renovation/retrofit sectors. It focuses on installing renewable heating systems that use either air-source or groundsource heat pumps, as well as

providing other services. Pure Renewables recently won a Hull-based contract to upgrade the heating and hot water systems in a care home complex with air-source heat pump systems, allowing the care home to enjoy energy savings of 30 per cent per annum, which will also impact favourably on residents’ comfort and welfare. By investing in the company’s renewables, Hull Vineyard Church will benefit from low energy bills; the system is eligible for the Renewable Heat incentive, and the savings can be used to fund projects such as the Vineyard Food Bank. Staff, whose training is key, are

employed from the local area. Pure Renewables has previously won a number of awards, twice being honoured at the Humber Renewables Awards. For this firm, being socially and environmentally responsible goes hand in hand with being successful. The awards judges said Pure Renewables was not only a strong environmental contender, but also demonstrated how it was saving money for customers and community organisations. This category was sponsored by Siemens, also headline sponsor for the awards event, with Finbarr Dowling being invited to announce the winner.

For the past three years, Hull Trains has topped the National Rail Passenger Survey, this year achieving a record-breaking satisfaction rate of 97 per cent – the highest score by a long-distance train operator – plus 100 per cent satisfaction on weekend services.

The company has also been among the top companies in the Which? passenger survey for reliability, availability of seating, cleanliness and overall conditions of trains for two successive years. Hull Trains is committed to introducing innovations that improve the customer experience. It has led industry-first trials of on-board Passenger Information Screens on selected carriages, giving customers up-to-the-minute, real-time information on connecting services and stations. Hull Trains conducts regular customer surveys on-board to sense-check customer satisfaction and listen to ideas for improvement. lectric String’s mission is to enhance people’s lives through the integration of technology, specifically with a focus on audio-visual (AV) systems in high-end environments. CATEGORY 8: MEDIUM BUSINESS OF THE YEAR

TURNING THE TIDE TACTICALLY FAMILY FIRM BACK FROM BRINK WITH SMART MOVES

P

eter Hird & Sons has been a local family business for more than 30 years, serving Hull and the surrounding area. Set up in 1983, the business had grown steadily year on year but had run out of steam by about 2005 and, in 2008, the company hit very hard times, being placed into special measures with banks and lenders. However, in 2009, Philip Hird, the current managing director, took control of the business and, with vision and support, he began to build a business that now serves the whole of the UK and occasionally Europe and beyond.

From focusing on the hire of mobile and mini-cranes, platforms, machinery removals and installations, in 2010, the firm set out to achieve more, opening a new hire facility in Doncaster to serve the local area with access platforms and scissor lifts, while creating six new jobs. Also in 2010, came an opportunity for the company to work on the now world-renowned Shard building in London, and it also opened another dedicated hire facility in Redhill, Surrey. In 2013, Hird’s was hit by flooding, losing everything at its Hull site, which had to be relocated into temporary container offices, where it is still based today.

It has now increased the amount of hire equipment and services offered and its training facilities are now able to conduct almost 200 individual training courses. Hird’s has invested heavily in staff, having more than 85 employees across its depots. The judging panel said this was a tough decision in an impressive category but that Hird’s had displayed “tenacity and resilience” in turning its fortunes around. This category was sponsored by HSBC Commercial Banking and Neil Waterhouse, representing the sponsor, was invited to announce the winner.

BUSINESS AWARDS 2016 CATEGORY 9: LARGE BUSINESS OF THE YEAR

BRINGING HOME THE ACCOLADE DEVELOPER GROWS FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH

L

ike its acclaimed developments, Beal Homes is a business built on very firm foundations. The East Yorkshire-based company, which employs almost 200 staff, has been building high quality homes for almost 50 years. Chairman and managing director Richard Beal represents the seventh generation of his family to have run construction businesses. Today, the business is on course for the seventh successive year of rising house completions, revenues and profits. The company has been involved in more than 65 devel-

opments across Hull, East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, riding the ups and downs of a cyclical industry. While other similar-sized house builders went to the wall after the 2008 banking crisis, Beal is proud to have not made a single member of staff redundant and to have kept a number of longstanding suppliers and contractors afloat during a painful time for the industry. Last year was Beal’s most successful one, with 161 homes completed, a turnover of £31.3m and net profits of £3.2m. In the same year, it won the Best Customer Satisfaction Initiative prize at the national

Housebuilder Awards. This year, Beal expects to complete a record 245 homes, with revenues of £37m and £5.2m net profit. Innovation is a watchword of the business. In 2010, Beal’s First Step range kick-started the local first-time buyer market, predating the Government’s Help to Buy scheme. The judging panel was impressed with Beal’s commitment and strength, saying this was an obvious shortlist candidate, and a continuing success story for a family-run company on course for even more growth. This category was sponsored by Gosschalks Solicitors.

BUSINESS AWARDS 2016 CATEGORY 11: ENTREPRENEUR OF THE YEAR

RRADAR FOUNDER STANDS OUT JUDGES IMPRESSED BY ENTREPRENEUR’S ‘BRAVE STEP’

I

t is hard not be swept up in Gary Gallen’s enthusiastic vision for the future of the legal profession, according to his winning nomination in the Entrepreneur of the Year category. Gary’s entrepreneurial zeal has taken the profession and shaken it up. He started working at a firm of solicitors in Scunthorpe. Within a year, he had formed a new criminal department at the firm and then became a partner. His reputation led to him being head-hunted by an international law firm, where he became one of the top criminal and regulatory solicitors in the country.

Despite this success, Gary was convinced that there was a better way to deliver legal services, so he left the company and set up rradar in his conservatory. His raison d’être was to help people run their businesses and organisations more successfully every day, giving them the education, resources and help they needed. The service that rradar provides is a revolutionary change from the status quo within the legal profession and has its roots in Gary’s own personal experience. Rradar is a law firm that has one foot firmly in the education sector and offers online training,

seminars, one-to-one calls, podcasts and, in the near future, a virtual legal assistant based on artificial intelligence technology. For Gary, it’s all about service – deliver that and the rest is easy, he believes. From the very earliest days of rradar, Gary has been a hands-on manager and since January last year, the number of cases being handled has increased by a staggering 569 per cent. The judges said Gary had taken a “brave step” and praised him for having the self-belief to act on his vision. This category was sponsored by Sewell Group.

After many combined years working in the creative industry, the pair decided their passion and expertise could better serve clients under their own name – and INIT Creative was born. Having quickly built up a sterling reputation for innovative design, the company has gone from strength to strength in an impressively short 18 months. Having secured Hull City as a

major client early on, INIT set its sights high and can now boast regular work from other well-known names including Hudgell Solicitors, MKM Building Supplies, Stanifords Estate Agents and Hull UK City of Culture – not to mention delivering work for such blue chip companies as Homebase, Furniture Village, Carpet Right and Peugeot. Highlights of this past year include designing the graphics that graced the dressing rooms of Wembley Stadium for Hull City’s play-off final and producing design collateral for the Rod Stewart concert at the KCOM Stadium. Adam and Brendan have ded-

icated themselves to self-development, with Brendan spending time mastering video editing and perfecting the administration of running a business and Adam enrolling on a For Entrepreneurs Only mentoring programme. Judges said: “What really appealed to us was that this was a genuine start-up, working up from literally nothing to a thriving monthly turnover and an impressive client list.” This category was jointly sponsored by Horncastle and MKM, with Andrew Horncastle, from Horncastle, and David Kilburn, from MKM, invited to announce the winner.

BUSINESS AWARDS 2016 CATEGORY 13: YOUNG ACHIEVER OF THE YEAR

WORK PAYS OFF FOR HEATHER SOLICITOR CLIMBS LADDER WITH DETERMINATION

H

eather Midwinter has been proving she is up for a challenge since she left school at 15 and acquired an apprenticeship in business administration with a law firm in the North West. Heather completed her NVQ in half the time allocated, moved on to the advanced qualification and was promoted to work alongside the senior partner of the firm within five months of starting her office junior role. Her employers paid for a four-year course that would help Heather qualify as a legal executive. Marriage brought her to Hull and Heather, then aged 20,

worked with a small to medium-sized law firm in the city. Her new employers continued to offer financial support and time off to study for her legal executive qualification. At her graduation, it was noted that Heather was one of, if not the youngest, to qualify at that time. Running and acquiring her own case load, Heather started to generate substantial fee income for the firm and her bosses encouraged her to go on and qualify as a solicitor, which she did over a number of years and with distinction. In 2013, the directors invited Heather to form a new law firm

in Hull, enabling her to become a director and shareholder. Duncan Rann Associates Ltd officially launched in 2014 with a team of five and has since doubled in size. Heather said she had achieved all she set out to by the time she was 30 – becoming qualified, being a director and having an interest in her own business. The judges said Heather’s success was down to working really hard and she had shown that “there are different routes to get to different places”. They were impressed by her energy and tenacity. This category was sponsored by Bishop Burton College.

t had already been lining up the awards nicely, taking accolades for its food and hospitality across Yorkshire and nationally. Fresh from winning the restaurant prize in the Remarkable East Yorkshire Tourism Awards, 1884 Dock Street Kitchen added to its trophy tally with the Tourism and Hospitality Award at the 2016 Hull Daily Mail Business Awards. “Hull matters to us,” said the restaurant’s nomination. “It’s where we’re from and it’s where we want to make a difference, providing a fine-dining experience for our local clientele on their doorstep, rather than in

rural East Yorkshire, welcoming the world when they arrive in Hull during 2017 and beyond and showing them that our city is way more than it’s cracked up to be.” It is why those national awards and reviews have been so important, because they have put 1884 Dock Street Kitchen on the map and they are helping Hull to build a reputation as a destination full of pleasant surprises. 1884 Dock Street Kitchen’s aim from the outset was to be the best restaurant it could, and to keep improving. Since opening in 2012, it has become the only restaurant in

the region to repeatedly tempt the tastebuds of national food writers, critics from The Telegraph, The Independent and The Guardian being among them. James Birch, general manager, and Laura Waller, head chef, lead a team of about 30 people who are all from the local area. Judges said that here was a business that was prepared to go the extra mile without seeking glory for itself. It had great people working for it and considerable investment had been made in the venture. This category was sponsored by Hull Trains and the company’s managing director Will Dunnett announced the winner.

BUSINESS AWARDS 2016 CATEGORY 15: BEST SUPPORT SERVICE

STARRING IN SUPPORTING ROLE RRADAR’S REWARD FOR QUALITY CUSTOMER SERVICE

W

hat happens when an SME needs access to legal advice? Many only turn to lawyers when trouble has already happened – perhaps someone has been injured in an accident, or someone has been dismissed and is making a claim against their former employer? What is lacking, and what SMEs really need, are resources that show how to avoid the problem in the first place. What if a business could work with lawyers, getting access to their expertise, experience and knowledge, helping to identify problems before they arise and avoid ever having to go to court?

Legal fees would no longer be an expense but an investment – an entrance to a world of training and risk-management coaching. The market was long overdue for upheaval – and this is where rradar stepped in. Headed by its entrepreneurial chief executive, Gary Gallen, rradar, based in Waterside Business Park, Livingstone Road, Hessle, placed power back where it belongs – in the hands of the clients themselves, providing a service that has been described as unique in the marketplace. The company wants the emphasis and the entry point to shift from late-stage fire-fighting

to early education, knowledge sharing and continuous, proactive development. Rradar’s approach to customer service has been amazingly successful, both for itself and for its partner organisations. Its provision of first-rate customer service, advice, guidance and online educational opportunities means that it has become the legal service provider of choice for an increasing number of SMEs. Judges said: “Because of Gary’s knowledge and experience, this business really is going to be giving extremely good support.” This new category for 2016 was sponsored by KRL.

T

he prestigious Lifetime Contribution Award has been a feature of the competition since 2012. Sponsored by KCOM – a long-standing supporter of the awards – since this category’s inception, the title goes to someone who has had a significant and positive impact on the local business community over a number of years. Unlike the other Hull Daily Mail Business Award categories, there is no nomination process or shortlist published, the judges instead facing some serious deliberations about their chosen winner in any given year. In 2016, it is the turn of Charlie

Spencer OBE to take the crown. Gary Young, executive vice-president of KCOM, who announced the winner, said: “The recipient of this award must be someone whose contribution to the business community and local life generally marks them out as deserving of special recognition. “Tonight’s winner certainly fits the bill. “He established his business 27 years ago, from his then home in Anlaby. “From scratch, it has grown to a multi award-winning business turning over more than £100m; conquering extraordinary engineering challenges, and enjoying

an excellent reputation among clients and the wider community.” Mr Young said Mr Spencer, who is executive chairman of the Hull-based Spencer Group, was a prominent advocate and pioneer of the Living Wage and a believer in entrepreneurship. He said Mr Spencer had given a great deal of his time to mentoring budding business owners and fledgling firms, and his company had made donations of cash and in-kind support totalling at least £200,000 to community causes and charities over recent years. A video highlighted why the judges had selected Mr Spencer.

Developers and artists combine to mark start of ‘eye-catching’ project By Debbie Hall Business Reporter d.hall@hulldailymail.co.uk

UNITED COLOURS: Charlie Allenby, of Allenby Commercial, and Ollie Marshall and Kain Marshall, of Spray Creative.

“When we moved our business into our own spacious, restored city centre property we had no problem attracting Tevalis, an innovative, growing, technology business, to take the other two floors. We hope that The Trade Yard Hull will attract similar companies. “With The Trade Yard we wanted an eye-catching, alternative look to make the site stand out in a classic

red brick industrial area and to let people know that we’ve got exciting plans. “As a young creative from Hull, I am always looking to involve other like-minded local people in our projects whenever possible. “We found Spray Creative on social media and we asked them to add their colours and designs to our concepts.” Spray Creative was set up after Kain Marshall, Josh Ashton and Ollie Marshall decided to turn their hobby into a business, fitting aerosol art projects around their day jobs. At The Trade Yard that meant working beyond midnight to get the best of the weather as they completed work on the wall at the Chapman Street side of the site. Kain Marshall, of Spray Creative, said: “We’ve done a few projects around the Hull area and we’ll be working soon on Drypool Bridge but

KCOM plans progress as revenues fall HULL-based KCOM Group has announced further progress with its business strategy after its interim results showed revenue fall of 7.1 per cent. A shift in its Enterprise focus towards high-value integration and cloud-based solutions; accelerated fibre deployment in Hull and East Yorkshire, with marketleading take-up, and integration of the business behind a single brand, enabled by investment in systems and processes, are all highlighted in the report. It shows revenues of £165.3m for the six months ending September 30, compared with £177.9m for the same period last year. Bill Halbert, chief executive, pictured, said: “Our transformation continues to progress well. “At the beginning of the year, we came together under a single brand, enabling us to simplify the way we work. “We are investing more in our systems and changing the size and skills of our teams, in order to focus more tightly on our strategic growth areas of Enterprise and Hull and East Yorkshire.” Mr Halbert said the disposal of certain national network assets last year was a fundamental part of the company’s journey. “The proceeds received gave us the opportunity to increase investment in our focus areas and has enabled us to continue to restructure the business,” he said. KCOM is on target to make ultrafast services available to two thirds of its customer base by next December. Following complaints this week after thousands of KCOM customers lost their internet access, Mr Halbert said: “One of my top priorities is customer experience and service.”

CREATING SPACE FOR FIRMS TO FLOURISH A SPLASH of colour is signalling the start of work to convert a run-down former motorcycle trail park into a bright new home for growing businesses in the city. The eye-catching look is also the mark of a partnership between Hull-based developers Allenby Commercial and freelance designers and aerosol artists Spray Creative. The result will be the third site in Allenby’s The Trade Yard brand, which has attracted national businesses to the existing developments in Beverley and Scunthorpe. But the Hull project, in Cleveland Street, will be different, as can be expected from a company that has earned accolades for its commitment to culture and to the revitalisation of the city. Allenby’s was one of the sponsors of the Larkin With Toads project in Hull and followed that by backing the Amy Johnson Festival, with one of the festival moths adorning its period offices in Alfred Gelder Street. The company’s creative credits include the complete renovation of The Maltings, the former Hull brewery which has been named by the Mail as “Hull’s coolest office” after being transformed to provide a stunning new home for global graphic design and packaging company SGS Inter national. Allenby Commercial will also adopt an environmentally friendly approach at The Trade Yard, in keeping with neighbours RB and that company’s new Centre for Scientific Excellence and Spencer Group’s Energy Works project. Established business leaders offer programme to help newcomers

He said: “The total area is 4.7 acres so there is plenty of room for car parking and landscaping and up to 100,000sq ft of business space, with units starting at 4,000sq ft. “We acquired the site from Hull City Council, who see it as a significant inward investment opportunity. “It’s a multi-million pound project. “It has the advantage of Enterprise Zone status, with zero business rates, and we’re exploring options for funding to make it as eco-friendly as possible.” Construction work will begin on The Trade Yard in January, with the first units becoming available from next September.

Stepping up to secure start-up success stories

A BUSINESS growth programme devised by For Entrepreneurs Only (FEO) has now opened for free applications, with Hull and East Yorkshire’s established business owners being invited to participate and develop their enterprises. Step Change For Growth, which is set to begin in February, will take local entrepreneurs through six interactive sessions over a six-month period, seeking to help enhance company performance and profitability by creating an effective strategy, focusing participants on boosting their margins and challenging them to “let go to grow”. Jan Brumby, FEO’s chief executive, is looking forward to meeting the ambitious business owners who apply for a place. She said: “Step Change is one of

the programmes we’re most proud of. “It’s developed and delivered by entrepreneurs, with many of those who complete it going on to become local success stories.” The unique peer-led programme has been strongly recommended by business owners who have taken part in recent years, with one commenting that they “now have the confidence and the tools to make sure growth happens”, while another said that “it has definitely helped me to focus and be enthused by the future ahead”. Local business owners of established private sector enterprises are being invited to apply for a

free place on the programme, and to qualify they must employ at least two people and have an appetite and commitment to grow their business within the next five years. Mrs Brumby said: “This is a perfect example of what FEO is all about – entrepreneurs working together, sharing real life experiences and knowledge for the common aim of creating jobs and wealth, all for a stronger Hull and East Yorkshire economy.” Previous participants are known to have gone on to increase sales and profit margins within their enterprise, as well as, on average, creating a further three jobs within their company, while many are also now FEO members. Those interested are being

encouraged to sign up at the FEO website quickly, as the popular programme always receives high demand. FEO has just closed applications for its popular and unique FEO360 programme, designed for owners of SMEs who want to work on their “soft” skills and attitudes while developing the “hard” aspects of their business’s performance. Six themed peer-led sessions are held fortnightly, and provided free, with topics including getting your finances in shape; freeing up your time; introducing processes and selling and developing relationships with banks and funders. The 2017 FEO360 programme also launches in February. ■ Visit www.forentrepreneurs only.co.uk

IN BRIEF

Visitors welcome to stay at TV presenter’s Georgian stately home

Rise and shine at Sarah Beeny’s beautiful B&B By Debbie Hall Business Reporter d.hall@hulldailymail.co.uk

AN EAST Yorkshire stately home that was rescued from the brink of dereliction by television property guru Sarah Beeny is extending its hospitality offering. Rise Hall, which has been developed as a wedding and events venue by owners Sarah and her husband Graham Swift, is now giving guests a chance to sample a “Beeny bed and breakfast” in the glorious Georgian surroundings. Previously, the mansion’s sumptuously renovated rooms were only reserved for guests attending an occasion at the hall, whose complicated rise from demise was witnessed by millions of viewers of the Channel 4 TV series, Sarah Beeny’s Restoration Nightmare. But Rise Hall, in Holderness, is now open to anyone seeking a unique B&B experience, with an exclusive selection of rooms available to book. Helen Davies, Rise Hall manager, said she expected the demand to be high for stays at the stately home. She said: “Rise Hall’s profile was elevated globally by the Restoration Nightmare programme. “In 2016, Rise Hall is certainly not the ‘nightmare’ it once was and, thanks to Sarah, Graham and their incredible team, this hugely important piece of British heritage has been saved and

is enjoying its renaissance as one of the UK’s top wedding and events venues.” Ms Davies said: “I have run Rise for three-and-a-half years and those people who have used the house for a wedding or event have left rave reviews. “In a response to its soaring popularity, Sarah and Graham have decided that the Rise Hall experience should no longer be restricted to guests who are fortunate enough to be invited to attend a wedding or event at this beautiful venue. “It is a wonderful, warm and friendly place. “At the beginning of this summer, Sarah and Graham felt it

was the right time to start embarking on this new venture, opening for bed and breakfast midweek.” Set in 27 acres of landscaped grounds, Rise Hall is surrounded by idyllic Holderness countryside, which can be seen from the bedrooms. Guests will also have access to other rooms during their stay, including the butler’s pantry kitchen, where they will first be welcomed with a cream tea. “The breakfasts, with everything sourced locally, are to die for,” said Ms Davies. “We will talk to every guest to make sure everyone’s experience is bespoke to them.”

The hall was built by architects Watson and Pritchett between 1815 and 1820 for the High Sheriff of Yorkshire, Richard Bethell. It remained the Bethell family seat until after the Second World War, when it was leased to St Philomena’s Convent School. After the school closed, the house stood empty and in an increasingly dilapidated state, until Sarah and Graham bought it in 2001. The couple said: “These buildings come alive when they are full of people. “We want to share our passion for British heritage and highlight the importance of finding a 21st century purpose for these incredible historical homes.”

Marketing agency gets place on top-50 chart MARKETING: Bluestorm, the Melton-based integrated design and marketing agency, is the only company in the Humber region to have been listed in Prolific North’s Top 50 Integrated Agencies list. The Prolific list is a definitive ranking of the North’s largest integrated agencies, spanning creative, advertising, marketing and sales promotion. Launched four years ago, it is the only Northern ranking of its kind, in that it is wholly independent and anchored on financial information taken from Companies House, supplemented by additional information provided by the agencies contacted. The ranking is predicted on a formula which examines a variety of factors including shareholder funds and/or balance sheets, turnover, pre-tax profits and headcount. Agencies from Manchester and Leeds dominate the ranking but agencies from Newcastle, Liverpool, other parts of Yorkshire and Cheshire complete the line-up. Andrew Cawley, managing director at Bluestorm, said: “Being listed for the fifth time proves the point that you don’t have to look to Leeds, London or Manchester to find an integrated marketing agency of the highest quality.”

Prize-winning pork FOOD: A pork dish produced by Hull’s Cranswick Country Foods has been awarded a Gold Q in the Quality Food Awards 2016 held in London. Asda’s Extra Special Golden Apron Outdoor Bred Pork Loin Joint with Yorkshire Black Pudding, Caramelised Bramley Apple & Lovage Stuffing was judged alongside a host of other food products at the event. The innovative recipe was created by Michelin-Star chef and restaurateur James McKenzie, of The Pipe and Glass, South Dalton, as part of The Golden Apron award scheme to discover Yorkshire’s best young chefs. The pork joint is available in Asda stores across the UK.

Don’t let one quick click on social media damage your reputation

T

he use of social media, which connects billions of people across the world every day, has exploded in the past decade. While social media sites, such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, can be a valuable marketing tool for businesses, they also bring with them unique challenges for employers. Careless use of social media by your employees can have a major detrimental impact on your business, damaging its reputation and image in one quick “click” of the button. Employees too often post negative comments about their employer, or colleagues, or post confidential information about business clients without thinking about the consequences. Due to the speed and coverage of social media, the potential for damage is great and one negative or confidential post could, before you know it, be viewed by thousands. So what can you do?

Lewis Couth Senior solicitor in the employment team at

Social media policies are key, here. There have been numerous employment case law examples of dismissals which have been held to be unfair due to the inadequacy of the social media policy. You should ensure you have a sound and comprehensive social media policy which stipulates what is and is not permitted, when and how social media can be used and the potential consequences of breaching the rules – the ultimate being dismissal. Top tips include: ■ Have a sound and comprehensive social media policy.

■ Ensure your employees are trained on social media issues/the policy. ■ Ensure consistency of treatment. ■ Amend other policies, such as the disciplinary policy/mobile phone policy to cover social media issues. Wilkin Chapman can review or provide you with a robust policy which would not only help you defend such a claim but would, more importantly, limit the potential for abuse and damage. A MAJOR investment in the refurbishment of a Hull office development marks out the city as an attractive proposition in the global property market, it has been claimed. The London-based European real estate investment and asset management firm Catalyst Capital has injected hundreds of thousands of pounds into the renovation of Anchor House, based in the Maltings, in Silvester Street. The city centre site has been extensively refurbished by Hull company Chameleon Business Interiors into a modern, New York-loft style work space. The building is being marketed by East Yorkshire property agent, PPH Commercial. Nick Pearce, PPH director, said the investment was proof Hull was becoming more attractive to national and international investors due to the City of Culture status and the offshore energy industry which is growing on both sides of the Humber. He said: “Hull, and the wider region, is in the midst of a cultural and economic revolution and with that comes a lot of attention, both nationally and globally. “It is no surprise, therefore, that overseas investors are beginning to notice the city’s property market and get excited about it. “Anchor House is a fantastic relic of Hull’s industrial past which found a new lease of life as attractive offices. “Now, with the refurbishment completed, it is one of the most stunning locations in the city centre, with units available to suit start-ups through to much larger organisations.” The Maltings was originally built in the late 1860s for the Hull Brewery Company Ltd and Anchor House was used for storing barrels waiting to be distributed to the city’s

Trenton is to embrace other opportunities in other sectors that still mean that customer focus and quality. “It could be absolutely anything, so long as it reflects the Trenton ethos and enhances our image – a bit like the Virgin brand. “Cars will continue to be the main concern of the business, but I wouldn’t rule out any opportunity that helps to enhance the Trenton brand image right across the region. “We would never implement anything that

The family firm making waves in material world City company is the nation’s only distributor of unique product A HULL family firm is celebrating a five-year association with a unique international product that has been used everywhere from the Royal Albert Hall to German autobahns. Landau Parapan, in Bontoft Avenue, is the only UK company to have the right to distribute Parapan – an highly-durable, waterproof and recyclable acrylic material that has widespread applications, from domestic interiors to shop displays, medical facilities and restaurants and even motorway sound barriers. The company imports Parapan from Austria and carries other products, too, a far cry from 1979 when the business was set up as Arni Mertens Sales to sell wooden kitchen doors. Today the firm designs, manufactures and supplies furniture, specialising in high-quality kitchen, bedroom and bathroom components. It distributes them to retailers, architects, designers and shopfitters, and with its 35 staff, including Lithuanian and Polish cabinet makers, the firm has a truly international perspective.

By Debbie Hall Business Reporter d.hall@hulldailymail.co.uk

Some doors and drawers are imported from Italy, shipments have gone to France and Portugal and Parapan kitchens are regularly sent to Trinidad. Gareth Atkin, sales and marketing director, said of the latter: “Those are in-out kitchens, which have to be able to function well outdoors in the heat and light. “Parapan is an amazing product – you can even polish scratches out.” Recently Landau supplied more than 270 kitchens for a high-end development in Fitzroy Place in central London. The firm has also worked on several projects with retail interior experts Trent Shop Fitters, and Parapan has been used for famous perfume brands’ points of sale. This year it was used in a race day hat. Nigel Mertens, managing director and the son of founder Arni, said: “From being a direct importer and ‘middleman’ of fairly standard products, we now manufacture, assemble and finish bespoke products.

“The hat, though, was the first time we’d been asked to create something for the fashion industry.” The name Landau happened by accident. “Dad is German,” said Mr Mertens. “A businessman he was dealing with did not speak English, only Flemish, French and German, and over dinner they discussed a company to produce doors for ‘kuchen’, meaning ‘kitchen’. “However, there was some confusion with ‘kutsche’, which means carriage.” This ultimately led to the firm’s name being changed to Landau, a type of carriage originally made in Germany, where Landau is a city. A picture of a Landau carriage hangs on the wall in the Hull firm’s offices to mark that special dinner. Arni Mertens turns 80 next month. Two grandchildren, James and Holly, already work for Landau and Nigel Mertens hopes their own offspring will eventually join the family business. “We’re looking forward to many more years of Landau Parapan,” he said.

y great grandfather, Sir Fred Parkes, a resident of Boston, Lincolnshire, acquired a small fish merchant business in the 1910s, and by 1924, had acquired The Boston Deep Sea Fishing and Ice Company, which was founded in 1885. The company originally operated four steam fishing trawlers, which landed their first catches in Hull in 1886. The company’s headquarters were then successively located at Boston, Grimsby and Fleetwood. In 1963, the company finally came to Hull, taking over the offices of the St Andrew’s Steam Fishing Co building at the entrance to St Andrew’s Dock. This company ultimately became the largest privately owned fishing vessel operator in the world through acquisition and organic growth. The old Boston Company was reorganised in the 1970s due to succession in the family and the decline in fishing. The family sold the remainder of their fishing interests in the early 1980s and Bostonair Ltd was formed in 1982 after the St Andrew’s Steam Fishing Co was renamed. Bostonair started life as an air charter company, which continued until 1998 when the company changed course to supply engineers and technicians to the aircraft industry. Since 2006, our offices have been located in Beverley, and this September, we moved into Norwood House, Beverley. The company in now active in the commercial airline maintenance sector and in the energy sector supporting wind farm construction and maintenance. Another of our businesses – Boston Renewables Ltd – develops commercial scale solar, wind and battery storage. As a group, we employ 35 people at our offices in Beverley and 250 technicians in the UK and Europe. We see Hull as a vibrant, exciting city full of fantastic people that is going through a period of regeneration and significant inward investment from business and as part of the UK City of Culture 2017. In fact, Hull was voted recently the eighth best city to live in in the world by Rough Guides, alongside esteemed cities such as Seoul and Nashville. Successful cities are driven by aspirational 25 to 40-year-olds and it is these people the city needs to retain and attract. The #MakeHull initiative is about making local people realise they can make a difference to the places and spaces around them. People need to be inspired about making change and, hopefully, this initiative, along with City of Culture 2017 and the various

PIONEER: Mark Parkes, group managing director of Bostonair, based in Beverley. other positive factors, will be a catalyst for the city. The opportunity Hull has now is probably better than at any time since the 1960s and it is all our responsibilities to make the most of that. Our advice for people in Hull is don’t just talk about the changes you want to see in the city but get involved. Visit www.spacehive.com/MakeHull to see how you can bring an idea to life. Get your friends, colleagues and local community involved and make them aware of the opportunity. This is your chance – don’t waste it. Famous names such as Amy Johnson and William Wilberforce, who originally hailed from the city, ended up helping to change the world, not just their home town. Hull as a city is changing. The Energy Estuary initiative, Hull Bondholders and Siemens have created massive inward investment and there is more to come. This comes alongside some of the more established sectors in the region such as pharmaceuticals, caravan building and the food processing industries. New digital businesses are also being created so the opportunities for young people to get into high-quality, well-paid jobs has never been better. With a thriving university, there is huge opportunity to retain this talent and make sure it’s not lost to other areas in the UK. Making Hull and the surrounding area an attractive place to live, work, socialise and raise a family is key to the future success of the city. The redevelopment of the Marina area, Fruit Market and The Deep are all great examples of what can be achieved. We have 21st century workplaces intertwined with attractions, places to meet and places to socialise. We need to do more of this and resolve the

issue of the A63 dividing the city in the way it does now. I really hope that everyone grasps the opportunity we have and thinks about what they can do for Hull, however big or small. There has also been far too much piecemeal development in Hull without a vision or strategy. I am hopeful this is beginning to change with new big ideas being brought forward by both local communities and the private sector. It will be key for public-private partnerships to be established to agree a vision and work together to deliver it. ■ If you have a great idea to help transform Hull, upload your idea at www.spacehive. com/makehull, start crowdfunding and you could receive pledges from #MakeHull, the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation and Growing a Greener Britain of up to £15,000 to help you achieve your goal. ©LW

Solicitors to lobby MPs for divorce law change

Market stall-holders tell shoppers: We’re still here Traders make plea after customers put off during refurbishment

LEGAL: Two local solicitors, Richard Hoare and Adele Wilkinson, who are family law partners with Andrew Jackson Solicitors in Hull and members of Resolution (Hull & East Yorkshire region), are joining with more than 150 family justice professionals at Parliament today to meet for Resolution Lobby Day. Mr Hoare and Ms Wilkinson will be meeting with MPs Graham Stuart, Alan Johnson and Karl Turner, to talk to them about why the Government needs to support a change to legislation to allow for No Fault Divorce. They will also be discussing other pressing family law issues, in particular the need for specific legislation to help and protect cohabiting couples who have separated. A major part of Resolution’s manifesto for family law, No Fault Divorce formed a key part of an inaugural speech given by Nigel Shepherd, national chairman of Resolution, to members earlier this year.

TRADERS who have been moved or had to downsize their stands to accommodate the ongoing refurbishment of Hull’s Trinity Indoor Market have called on Christmas shoppers to come and find them – and buy. Stallholders, some of whom have been selling in the market for decades, have had conversations with customers who thought they had “gone” or believed the market had closed altogether. Work began on the £1.6m revitalisation of the market in October, when its Trinity House Lane entrance was closed off. Stalls from the food hall moved to the mall area, with users of the market being encouraged to use the entrances at Lowgate and Hepworth’s Arcade for the duration of the project. Hull City Council has said messages about the works have been numerous, including the positioning of large window and floor graphics at the market entrances to direct people; postcards produced for traders to hand out to customers and a video and tweets. A council spokesman said: “Hoardings are being installed outside the Trinity House Lane and North Churchside entrances in December/early January, so we will also be getting artwork put on these, which will redirect people to use the Hepworth’s Arcade and Lowgate entrances. “The Destination Hull e-newsletter that is sent quite widely every month has also talked about Trinity Market in the last three to four issues specifically.” But traders think the notifications are inadequate or not clear enough and that they have seen reduced footfall as a result. Marion Ring, who owns The Tea Shop, which specialises in more than 100 loose leaf teas, and has a range of Christmas tea blends in stock now, said: “People need to see past the works that are going on and support these small local businesses in the run-up to Christmas. “We all have something different to offer to what is on the high street, in goods as well as service.” Ms Ring said: “I have heard people say, ‘I didn’t know the market was still open’, and they need to know there is still a market here. “It is easier to get into this side of the city at the moment and there is good parking nearby – at

Kicking off careers ACCOUNTANCY: Two young professionals are launching their accountancy careers in Hull. Maggie Oketayo came to the city from Essex to study at the university and chose to stay to pursue life as an accountant. Toby Bloom, from an east Hull village, also preferred to begin his professional career in the UK City of Culture 2017. They are both working at cbaSadofskys, one of the area’s leading accountancy practices, which supports a variety of businesses and individuals from start-ups and small businesses to multi-national corporations. Ricky Field, a director at cbaSadofskys, said: “We want everyone to know that Hull is a prosperous area where businesses can flourish and we are always on the lookout for talented young people to help us achieve this.”

MESSAGE: Stall-holders, from left, Lesley Parker, of Soap From The Heart; Kirstie Lythe, of Coco-Rachel Boutique; Debbie Denby, of Debbie’s Sweet Cabin; Mike Waudby, of Trinity Graphics; Marion Ring, of The Tea Shop; and Jason Edwards, of E Duffield Butchers. E Duffield Butchers, which has been in the market since 1965, has been relocated away from its regular pitch. Jason Edwards, a butcher with the business, said: “It has definitely been quieter and we have noted a drop in takings since the work started. “I had a customer who came up to me only yesterday and said, ‘I’ve found you’. “The run-up to Christmas is normally a very busy time for us. “We make our own sausages

and they do very well and we sell a lot of turkeys and turkey butterflies. “We have an offer on pork at the moment, so it is ideal for anyone wanting to stock up their freezer for Christmas.” Lesley Parker, who owns Soap From The Heart, wanted to highlight to people that the market offered more than food-based items. She is a fully registered maker of her own products, including bath bombs, soaps, lip balms and candles. “Everybody in here offers that personal touch,” said Ms Parker, who felt that the closure of the public toilets in the market – they are also being upgraded – had also impacted on the number of visitors. Kirstie Lythe has been running the flower stall for the past 18 months and sells a range of bou-

quets, wreaths and Christmas arrangements. “Hopefully, the market will be really good when it’s finished,” said Ms Lythe. “I have been moved because of the refurbishment,” she said. “You have to get people to know where you are. I don’t think there are enough adverts on Whitefriargate pointing to the market.” Debbie Denby has run the sweet stall for 24 years and has had to downsize by 75 per cent during the works. She said: “The market is ideal for people looking for something a bit different. “We do retro sweets, bespoke hampers and gift boxes.” Garry Taylor, city major projects manager said: “Trinity Indoor Market has a very long history in Hull and it is only right that as part of the regeneration of the city centre, the market also receives a facelift. “We have worked closely with traders to ensure they remain in the market throughout the project and I would like to thank them for their co-operation during this time. “I am confident that this refurbishment will create a market the traders and residents of Hull can be proud of.” The project at the market, which is more than 100 years old, is being funded predominantly by the Humber Local Enterprise Partnership, with £1.35m funding coming from the Regional Growth Fund and the top up of £250k from the city council’s capital programme budget.
