JOBS UPLIFT THANKS TO CULTURE STATUS Business confidence throughout the region brings employment opportunities By Catherine Lea Business Reporter c.lea@hulldailymail.co.uk

HULL’S UK City of Culture status appears to already be making its mark on the employment market, with an uplift in jobs across the region. Gill Dillon, employer and partnership manager at the Department for Work and Pensions in Hull, said there was evidence of business confidence throughout the city and beyond, bringing in investment and with it new jobs. “The hospitality industry is particularly strong at the moment across Hull and the East Riding,” she said. “I was looking at the number of vacancies and wondering if it had something to do with City of Culture, and there does appear to be a link. “There seems to be a lot more confidence in general.” Mrs Dillon pointed to new developments, such as the Doubletree by Hilton Hotel in Ferensway, as well as existing businesses like The Minerva in Nelson Street which is expanding its offer. She said: “New bars and restaurants are opening up, while existing businesses are growing. “From where we are based in Britannia House we have been able

to see the new Hilton Hotel rise from the ground, and now there is a planing application to add another storey and a rooftop bar. “That will create 90 jobs and we are currently working with them at the moment to establish their recruitment needs. “The owners of Minerva are also opening a gin bar, and Humber Street in particular is going from strength to strength. “In Hessle, the new Green King pub will be opening in June, creating 70

jobs, and then we are in the process of working with the holiday parks across the East Riding on their seasonal recruitment. “This is only a snapshot of what is happening at the moment, but it does look positive.” Only this week, the Mail revealed Hull museums had enjoyed a huge spike in visitor numbers over the past weekend, with the Maritime Museum attracting 5,101 people

Entrepreneur’s new focus as he sells shares ENTREPRENEUR Peter Aarosin has sold his shares in RMS Group and left the business “to focus on other commercial opportunities”. Mr Aarosin, pictured, has been at the forefront of RMS’s development since 1995, during which time it has grown from a single terminal at the Port of Goole to operations around the Humber estuary. The Goole-based businessman, also former chairman of Hull Bondholders and former director of Hull and Humber Chamber of Commerce, was a 50 per cent shareholder in RMS from 1995 until 2004. In 2007 he returned as chief executive and minority shareholder to lead the next phase of RMS’s growth. Now, Mr Aarosin is to focus on his roles as a shareholder and managing director of Danbrit Holdings, a company with businesses in the shipping, haulage, warehousing and industrial packing sectors. He said: “This is a very exciting time for Danbrit, with a number of exciting opportunities at key stages of development, including Goole Intermodal Terminal, which has the potential to become a major Northern logistics hub creating hundreds of jobs. “I feel now is the right time for me to step away from RMS to enable me to focus fully on realising these growth opportunities.”

Jobs uplift thanks to culture status Continued from PAGE 1 across Saturday and Sunday – up from 433 during the same period last year. Ferens also welcomed 4,938 people visitors through its door, compared with 576 in 2015. On Monday it was announced Fruit in Humber Street has received a £700,000 government cash boost towards its regeneration and expansion, while Luca Silvestrini’s Protein – one of Britain’s most entertaining dance companies – has been confirmed to appear in the city in July. Mrs Dillon said: “I think a lot of businesses underestimated how popular events like Made In Hull were going to be. Towards the end of that week, places that were open had queues out of their doors, which showed some of the opportunities City of Culture presents.” Hospitality is the fourth largest sector nationally. In rural areas in particular, it provides thousands of jobs at all levels. Despite this, the sector has for some time been dogged by perceptions of low pay and long hours. Mrs Dillon said: “Some people can be quite dismissive, but hospitality is a really important sector for the region. “For those with the right attitude who are willing to work hard it can present the opportunity to rise the ranks relatively quickly.” Cllr Daren Hale, deputy leader of Hull City Council, said: “Since its launch in 2013 the ten-year City Plan has started to deliver in plans to invest and regenerate Hull, creating jobs and making the city a world-class destination. “We are now seeing increasingly encouraging job creation and employment figures across the city, particularly within the hospitality, cultural and retail industries. “Since 2014 more than 40 new businesses have opened in the city centre, creating 500 jobs in these sectors and, as we establish as UK City of Culture 2017, we expect to see these figures continue to rise. “As tourism increases we can be confident that employment is moving towards a more prosperous future.”

A virtual reality escape for young people with autism Graduates develop garden game to help children on the spectrum By Catherine Lea Business Reporter c.lea@hulldailymail.co.uk

UNIVERSITY of Hull graduates have developed a virtual reality (VR) game designed to help children and young people on the autistic spectrum. Botanika allows young people to immerse themselves in their own virtual reality garden where they can plant, create and design, as well as connect with other people in the virtual world. It has been developed by VISR VR, a company co-founded two years ago by computer science graduate Louis Deane and Lindsay West, joint managing director of Hull manufacturer Garthwest Ltd. VISR VR worked with autism awareness charity CASPA to develop the game, which was commissioned by Microsoft. Louis said: “The team at VISR has created something fantastic. “The immersive experience of planting your own garden really helped with how in control these young people felt and, in turn, enabled them to feel at ease.” Based at the University’s Enterprise Centre, VISR now employs 17 members of staff and has a client base including the likes of Google, Coca Cola and Microsoft. The company has also provided virtual reality headsets for blockbusters including Star Wars The Force Awakens, and last year provided the first 360 filming for Glastonbury.

‘FANTASTIC’: VISR VR has created Botanika, commissioned by Microsoft. Below, Lindsay West.

Botanika was recently showcased to 15,000 people at the Microsoft Future Decoded Tech event. Once released, it will be available on Xbox, PlayStation, PCs and mobile phones. VISR’s Ellie Battersby said:

“The game is liberating for people on the autistic spectrum because they are in a fully immersed world. “It frees them from some of the stresses they feel in a real-world situation, because they are in control of everything in the world they are creating.” Ellie said the real world applications of virtual reality are on the rise as people begin to realise it is more than just for entertainment. She said: “Virtual reality is going to be integrated into everything. We deal with VR on a daily basis and when we show people what it can do they are awestruck. It puts a smile on your face, because you forget

how incredible this technology really is. “It is great to be at the forefront of this. A lot of people don’t realise this is happening, and it’s happening in Hull.” VISR’s Aslan Silva, who created Botanika, said: “To be working on a project to provide safe, social platforms for people to enjoy and be creative alongside each other is incredible, and one I’m proud to be a part of.” Lindsay West said: “We have worked very hard in Hull for many years to really make a difference. This is a positive story coming from gaming and VR and showing what a difference this kind of application can make to people’s lives.”

Top health food store to stock Hull firm’s oat bars Nutrution brand secures 300-shop deal with Holland and Barrett A HULL-based nutrition brand that specialises in high-protein oat bars has secured a deal to supply 300 Holland and Barrett stores across the UK and Ireland. Battle Oats’ products are now available through hollandandbarrett.com, and will hit stores in a few weeks’ time. Entrepreneurs Kevin Smith and Shaun Gibbins founded Battle Oats in 2014 and have since grown the business into a leading brand available at independent health stores and gyms throughout the UK. Mr Gibbins said: “Holland and Barrett is the UK’s leading high street health food chain, so securing this deal is a major step forward for us as a business. “Our reputation is growing in the flourishing fitness and sports markets, and to have products in another 300 retail outlets is a major boost.”

By Catherine Lea Business Reporter c.lea@hulldailymail.co.uk

Produced in a family bakery, all of Battle Oats products are gluten free and 100 per cent natural. Over the past two years, the firm has grown sales by more than 100 per cent per annum, shipping more than one million bars last year. It now has distribution in Ireland, the Netherlands and Kuwait, and exports to more than ten countries. Mr Smith said: “The sports nutrition market in the UK is now valued at £580m and last year saw 21 per cent growth in the sports protein bar and snack segment, as health conscious consumers increasingly demand nutritious snacks on the go.

Our reputation is growing in the flourishing fitness and sports markets Shaun Gibbins

“Fortunately, our products tick all of the boxes.” The pair are hopeful the deal will open doors with other high street retailers and supermarket chains. Mr Smith said: “We are in conversations with a number of other retailers, and with some new products coming online that broaden the ‘free from’ range we already offer, we are confident of securing more retailers this year.”

40,000th customer signs up for Lightstream COMMUNICATIONS: KCOM has welcomed the 40,000th customer to sign up for its Lightstream broadband service. Teri Harrison, 27, of Stonebridge Avenue, east Hull, became the 40,000th householder across Hull and the East Riding to benefit from ultrafast broadband after having the service installed. The installation marks a major milestone for the £60m rollout of Lightstream, which can deliver download speeds of

250Mbps (megabits per second) for residential customers and one gigabit per second for businesses. Ms Harrison said: “Like everyone else these days I do a lot online. I do internet shopping, play Xbox One Live, keep in touch with my family on social media, download games for my three-year-old nephew and do a lot of research online, too.” Lightstream will be available to 150,000 properties, equal to 75

per cent of KCOM’s overall network in Hull and East Yorkshire, by the end of this year. This will cement Hull’s claim to be the ultrafast capital of the UK. Hull is the only city in the UK where ultrafast Fibre To The Premises technology is being rolled out as standard. KCOM’s executive vicepresident Gary Young, said: “I’m delighted we have passed this milestone for Lightstream.”

FROM shields and helmets to riot kits and protective clothing, Michael Lupton Associates Ltd (MLA) designs and manufactures products that protect police and prison staff on the front line. The East Yorkshire firm is now set for further growth after announcing a £150,000 investment to bring its leather and canvas production facilities in-house. Recent developments have seen MLA triple its workforce, from nine to 24 employees. The latest investment will enable the business, in Seaton Ross, to increase its client base and target more overseas orders. Carl Wolf, MLA’s general manager, said: “It’s a fantastic story all round – great for employment in the rural locality where MLA are based; great for British manufacturing, but, most importantly, it’s great for our customers. “We can now work with clients on bespoke product development or modifications to an existing product and undertake small quantity orders. “We will also be able to target further export growth in the future.” MLA has been in business for more than 24 years. Last year, the company received a Textile Regional Growth Fund Grant, facilitating the installation of a leather and canvas workshop fully equipped with state-of-theart industrial machines and additional staff. The latest developments mean MLA has shortened the supply chain, with 90 per cent of the products it sells “Made in Britain” – the majority of which are produced in its Seaton Ross workshop. The on-site sewing room is in the converted blacksmiths, which was once part of Seaton Ross’s village pub that Michael Lupton, MLA’s managing director, bought in 1998.

Stephanie Neathway, head of the MLA sewing room, said: “We can track back to exactly who has made each individual product. “My team and I pride ourselves on producing top-quality kit that won’t let officers down in the field.” MLA recently unveiled a new and improved public order helmet, which will be produced at MLA’s assembly plant and could potentially lead to further new jobs. “Merlin”, recently awarded an international patent, has been developed collaboratively over a three-year period to provide an improved level of head protection and comfort. MLA has also signed a confidentiality agreement with Scott Safety, a US headquartered producer of goods including respiratory protection products and monitoring and sensor equipment for petroleum, chemical, construction, industrial and emergency services. The step will allow the companies to work on collaborative projects, enabling both to offer a more complete solution. Mr Wolf said: “We’re delighted Scott Safety have placed trust in us to work with them even more closely on a number of projects, which we believe will be very beneficial to both parties.”

Race is on to get young people into engineering

BUSINESS HUGE INTEREST: From left, Karl Watson, 17, Danielle Firth, 19, Caroline Lancaster, 16, tutor Glenn Jensen, Louis Horsfall, 17, and Vaughan Curnow with one of the cars taking part in the Project Blyth race.

More than 60 electric kit cars to take part MORE than 60 electric kit cars will be raced around Hull’s KCOM Stadium this summer as part of a project to get more young people into engineering. The Project Blyth race was originally set to take place in the city centre. However, unprecedented interest from the public has prompted organisers to move it to the stadium. The event will see teams of young people compete in cars they have built, with 62 vehicles raced around a circuit covering the perimeter of the stadium and adjoining car parks.

By Catherine Lea Business Reporter c.lea@hulldailymail.co.uk

The cars have been supplied to schools and colleges by Greenpower Education Trust, a charity that inspires young people to think about engineering as a career. Vaughan Curnow, project co-ordinator at Greenpower Education Trust, said: “The uptake has exceeded our expectations. “We have more than 600 people taking part, all of whom want to bring along family and

Major employers, including Siemens and the University of Hull, have committed to supporting teams. The project has also received funding from Green Port Hull,

BUSINESS leaders say they are optimistic a post-Brexit Britain will not be all doom and gloom. It is only a week since Prime Minister Theresa May triggered Article 50, but already businesses are taking stock of what impact the move might have on their bottom line. As with most things, the devil will be in the detail, however local figures are already looking to the positives that could emerge as the UK edges nearer to a divorce from the EU. Entrepreneur Jonathan Elvidge said: “I am an optimist and a great believer in brand Great Britain, so I think we can shout about what we do and make and where we do it. “Also, we are a net importer. If restrictions are put in place that mean we import less then the other larger member states we import from are going to suffer, so hopefully this can help create a level playing field. “From a personal point of view, I would probably rather we had stayed, if only to avoid disrupting things, but the majority voted to leave, so we need to make the most of the opportunities it presents.” As a board member of the For Entrepreneurs Only group, Mr Elvidge dedicates a lot of his time supporting fledgling entrepreneurs in East Yorkshire. The founder of The Gadget Shop, who in 2015 sold his business Red5 in a multimillion-pound deal, said Brexit was not an issue he has seen raised by start-up companies. “Start-up companies have so many other things to think about,” he said. “I have not had one mention Brexit to me. They have bigger issues to think about, such as where their customers are going to come from, or how to secure funding.” As the only UK city that exports more to the US than it does the EU, Haltemprice and

TIME FOR CHANGE: Haltemprice and Howden MP and Brexit Secretary David Davis. Howden MP David Davis, who is also Brexit Secretary, said the rest of the country could learn from Hull’s example in exporting to markets beyond the European Union. Only a third of the city’s trade is with EU countries – a figure highlighted by managing director of Cobus Communications, Michael Smith. He said: “Leaving the EU will have a significant effect on everyone, not just businesses, but I do feel overall it will be a positive move forward. “I feel the UK has had too much financial and political pressure placed upon it to conform with EU laws and directives. “In past years, the Government has spent more time making and breaking false promises to get into power than actually concentrating on implementing any real transformation and solutions of longevity. “I’m not sure that anyone knows exactly what the future after Brexit will hold for the UK, but the majority of the country voted to leave. I was one of them as I felt that the current situation was unsustainable and required change.”

Customer relations manager Stephen Moore said the deal has also opened up doors to new customers in other countries. He said: “The challenge for our team was that, as a chemical, there was a lot of detailed paperwork to complete to ensure it navigated customs easily. “Incomplete documentation could have caused delays or even non-shipment, ruining our chances of a longterm contract.”

Grotech Production Ltd was started as Protech Formulations Ltd in 1977. Based at Britannia Road, Goole, the firm is a contract manufacturer of chemical products for the agricultural, horticultural, household, motor and construction industries. EVENTS: Baroness Karren Brady, pictured, is among the speakers confirmed for this year’s Humber Business Week. The entrepreneur will be joined at the week-long festival of business by Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, and former deputy prime minister Lord Prescott, among others. The programme of events kicks off on Monday, June 5, with the Bondholder Breakfast and will culminate on Friday, June 9, with The Business Day event at Bridlington Spa. In between, there will be a packed schedule of networking opportunities, high-profile speakers and events led by top UK companies and groups. Kath Lavery, chair of Humber Business Week, said: “We seem to say it every year, but this year the demand and thirst of companies to be involved in Humber Business Week has been overwhelming. “I’ve never known such a buzz around the plans with almost two months still to go.” Now in its 13th year, the schedule will feature Biz Week stalwarts, such as the Institute of Directors Humber Luncheon and the Made in Hull Awards, alongside new events such as the Bank of England’s Outlook for the Economy and The Hull Lifestyle Awards. Mrs Lavery said: “We have managed to develop such a strong programme this year because we have benefitted from such a varied and skilled team on the steering group, who volunteer their time to make this event work for all businesses. ■ For more details, visit www.humberbusinessweek. co.uk

Mr Moore said while buyers had been impressed with the firm’s ability to navigate complex customs and shipping to meet a tight deadline within budget, the product’s innovation and cost effectiveness was just as important in securing the contract. “Freshclean is attractive to facilities management companies because it is versatile on numerous surfaces and effective,” he said. “Because it is a powder, we can export a lot of product cheaply, which makes it even more appealing. “We don’t export water, making it affordable.” Martyn Peters, the consultant who brokered the deal on behalf of the Dubai operation, said: “When my client mentioned he was looking to source a cleaning product from a UK manufacturer, I immediately thought of Grotech Production Ltd and Freshclean. “Having experience on your side makes for a smooth process and the team at Grotech are familiar with exports so the paperwork and shipping were arranged quickly and within budget.” Mr Moore said: “The Freshclean product is proven to reduce packaging and transport costs. “When Martyn contacted me to discuss the export business I realised that it was a great opportunity to introduce the cleaning power of Freshclean to a new Middle East market.”

Hundreds access all areas at technology businesses Partner firms’ invitation to go behind the scenes at headquarters By Catherine Lea Business Reporter c.lea@hulldailymail.co.uk

AN OPEN invitation to “come and see us” has resulted in hundreds of people visiting the new headquarters of IT@Spectrum and The One Point. The partner companies moved to Bridgehead business park in January and urged customers, contacts and friends to visit them, make use of their facilities and find out about how emerging technology could be used to grow their businesses. The new £2.75m offices, branded The View, have since welcomed more than 500 people, prompting the partner firms to develop a calendar of meetings, training sessions, networking opportunities and events. Ken Sturdy, managing director of IT@ Spectrum, said: “We’re showing the latest technology in action and we’re practising what we preach. “It’s been a revolving door – every day people are coming in to visit us and make use of the facilities in a variety of ways. “We always say this place is open to our customers, potential customers, suppliers and friends – and that’s a lot of people. Our message is ‘come and see – you’re very welcome and you might well learn something’.” The venue has since hosted meetings by the Humber LEP, For Entrepreneurs Only, the Bondholders, among others, as well as a training day for careers advisers. Martin Lauer, managing director of The One Point, said: “We’ve been delighted with the response to our invitation to pay us a visit, find out what we do and how we do it, and make use of the facilities here. “We’ve now developed that engagement into an extensive calendar of one-off, monthly and quarterly events. “The View has effectively become a business destination, with some of the region’s most influential organisations making use of our offices.

‘COME SEE US’: Martin Lauer, MD at The One Point and Ken Sturdy, MD at IT@ Spectrum. “The feedback has been really positive. So many people want to come and look around, see what we’re doing and use the space and the technology we have here. “One of the best things is they get to meet our teams. They get to see we have happy, highly professional and capable people, proud of what they do and there is no veil of secrecy. “They can go and sit with the people in finance and with our support and sales

teams. They don’t just get shepherded into the boardroom – they have an access-all-areas pass.” The events calendar features quarterly “Tech Talks” focused on helping businesses to utilise technology to drive growth. The first of which will take place on Wednesday, June 7, during Humber Business Week. Visit www.humberbusinessweek.co.uk for more details.

GraVity aiming high with new parks plan LEISURE: The Bridlington-born businessmen behind the UK’s premium trampoline park brand are expanding thanks a £5m cash boost. Harvey Jenkinson and Michael Harrison opened the first GraVity trampoline park in Xscape, Castleford, in February 2015. The company have since opened a new trampoline park in Hull’s St Stephen’s, pictured, as well as in Norwich and Maidstone, bringing the total number of employees to 220. The entrepreneurs say they will use the cash, sourced from an EIS fund through Guinness Asset Management, to open four new parks across the UK while introducing new activities and increasing capacity at existing sites. Mr Harrison said: “We have made significant progress since opening our first trampoline park. From sleeping on the trampolines at night and working 16-hour days to build our first park, we are now a profitable business and the only trampoline park operator to focus on desirable high footfall retail and leisure locations.”

Biltong beef launched for the snack market Yorkshire Wagyu Company creates new range A PEDIGREE beef business is aiming to conquer the snack market with its new range of biltong made from one of the world’s most highly prized meats. The Yorkshire Wagyu Company in Tibthorpe, near Driffield, was launched in 2014 by farmers Jim Bloom and Jonathan Shepherd. It has now made its first foray into the charcuterie marketplace with the launch of a range of biltong products. Mr Shepherd said: “We’re always looking to innovate and bring new products to the market and we want as many people as possible to have the opportunity to experience the unique taste of Wagyu. “This biltong brings something new and different to the snacking market, because it is made from Wagyu that have grazed in the Yorkshire Wolds. “Add to that the high protein and low carbohydrate content, you can see why it is a popular choice of snack with sportsmen and those following the paleo diet.” Biltong has its origins in South Africa and is a mildly spiced, salted, air-dried meat, whose name derives from the Dutch “bil”,

meaning buttock, and “tong”, meaning strip. The Yorkshire Wagyu Company’s biltong is made from prime cuts of grass-fed Yorkshire Wagyu that are seasoned with a home-produced dry spice mix and dried in a UV cabinet to simulate the South African sun. The initial biltong range comprises biltong slices, paleo biltong slices, biltong bites and biltong sticks and is available from the company’s new online shop at www.yorkshirewagyucompany.co.uk The biltong caught the attention of Bjorn Estment, a South African native and professional motorcycle racer, who came across Yorkshire Wagyu through saloon car champion Katie Milner, who is sponsored by the beef business. He said: “South Africans grow up snacking on biltong and this one is so authentically brilliant I could have sworn I was back home in South Africa at the local biltong deli.”

SWAPPING the sun-soaked beaches of Perth for the windswept banks of the Humber might not be every businessman’s dream move. Entering an industry still reeling for the effects of the harshest recession in living memory is probably even further down the career plan. For Elliot Hibbs, however, the prospect of returning to his home city and the business his father, Jim, had built up over 30 years proved too hard to resist. He said: “Caravanning is in my blood, but it was still a new industry for me, and in 2012 the sector was still feeling the effects of the recession. “It was a pretty steep learning curve, a baptism of fire in some respects, but I enjoyed the challenge.” Mr Hibbs had swapped East Yorkshire for Australia in 2008, when he went to work for a design company Down Under – a job he was offered while climbing the world’s highest mountain, as you do. But it was not just the family business that drew him back to Hull. He said: “When I was at Everest Base Camp, a guy there with me said if I ever wanted a job in Australia to give him a call. One day, that’s what I did. “My wife and I settled in Australia and had our daughter over there, and though she spoke to the grandparents every day via Skype, it is not the same as being just a drive away from them. “My dad had been asking for a couple of years whether I wanted to join the family

business, and when we had our son we felt the time was right.” But as with many family firms, rising the ranks is not a birth right but something that has to be earned. Joining Coachman as sales director in December 2012, within four years Mr Hibbs had helped to grow the company’s dealer network from 27 to 39 – the highest number in the business’s history. While much of this was down to a determined focus on his part, it also hinged on the Hull manufacturing firm’s ongoing product development and innovation. He said: “Our dealer network is now the largest it has ever been. This has been down to a proactive approach, but also an enhanced product range built by our highly skilled workforce. “The Vision we launched in 2013 is a better, lighter caravan and other products, such as the Pastiche and VIP, have been improved.” In December, Mr Hibbs, now managing director of Coachman, led a management buyout together with three senior members of the senior management team. The move means the business remains very much a family firm. In line with much of the industry, Coachman is now enjoying something of a resurgence in terms of both sales and staffing levels, though innovation and quality has been key to this growth. Mr Hibbs said: “Since 2012, we have increased the number of units produced by more than 50 per cent, and this year we will produce more than 2,000 units for

the first time in the company’s history. “This is not unique to Coachman, it is a trend we are seeing across the industry, and our challenge now is to maintain that growth.” Coachman is now making ten caravans a day, which equates to one rolling off the production line about every 48 minutes. Though the company currently has its hands full keeping up with demand in the UK caravan market, Mr Hibbs said an expansion into new products could be on the cards. He said: “For us, the biggest opportunity is to maintain the growth we have had over the past few years, so we will be looking to further increase our dealer network and constantly improve our product. “But we are also looking at diversification, maybe into products such as motorhomes. “Our sales are up 11 per cent, and production is up by 8 per cent, meaning at some point we will have a shortage of caravans, so will be looking to increase production and, as a result, staffing. “Our order book for next year is also full, which is a great position to be in.”

Digital agency taps into UK City of Culture buzz Headland says Hull’s talent pool is ‘envy of every Northern city’ By Catherine Lea Business Reporter c.lea@hulldailymail.co.uk

A BUSINESS that counts Alton Towers, ITV and Santander among its clients has expanded into Hull in a move designed to capitalise on the city’s “digital potential”. Digital agency Headland will relocate four staff members to its new Hull division in C4DI as part of plans to cement its presence in the city’s digital tech scene. The company, which already works locally with Rollits LLP, Kis-orca and Machine Mart, says the expansion will create five jobs over the next 12 months. Ken Heptonstall, Headland’s managing director, said: “We’ve represented clients in Hull for many years and it’s always been a great place with huge potential, but 2017 finally feels like the year the city’s digital marketplace will fulfil its potential. “The buzz created by the UK City of Culture badge is enormous, and the local digital tech talent pool is now not only the envy of every other northern city, but is being properly harnessed by the likes of C4DI. “All of which means this is the perfect time to make our presence in this great city permanent.” Formed in 1991, Headland’s core expertise lies in the creation and management of digital solutions for Fintech, mobile payments, e-commerce and cyber security. It also delivers traditional

effect in theory on April 1, but the website is still under construction, with the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors warning it is likely to be developed piecemeal, with completion not due until next year. Ratepayers who want to check their rating assessment must register through the Government Gateway. If they wish to challenge their valuation, they must then compare their property with others of similar age, size and character in their area and set out why they think their valuation is incorrect. If their challenge is dismissed, or if the VOA has not responded within 18 months, they have the right to appeal to a Valuation Tribunal. Mr Smith said: “The new website is the essential tool for businesses to check their valuations and, if appropriate, challenge and appeal. It is complicated and time-consuming and has been imposed by the Government, who don’t seem to be aware of the problems it will cause. “Some business owners have still not received their rates bills, and those who have may find them inac-

REGENERATION: A hotel whose opening marked the first major leisure investment at Hull Marina will host an event outlining the area’s modern regeneration. The Holiday Inn Hull Marina opened its doors in 1987, long before the arrival of award-winning restaurants 1884 Dock Street Kitchen and 1884 Wine and Tapas, Tapasya@Marina, Butler Whites and Ambiente. David Donkin, pictured, property director of Wykeland Group, will be at the Holiday Inn next month to outline the company’s plans for further development in the area. He said: “The Fruit Market presents a truly unique opportunity to create a community where people live, work and play in one of Hull’s most historic and distinctive areas. “This is a long-term regeneration project that has a key role to play in the fundamental reinvention of Hull. “There is much more to come, but we are encouraged by the enthusiastic response so far. It’s clear the commercial and creative communities, and the public generally, are as excited as we are by the Fruit Market’s enormous potential.” The networking event has been organised by HullBID to give city centre businesses an insight into the plans by Wykeland and its partner Beal Homes for retail, leisure and residential use of new and restored properties in Humber Street and the surrounding area. It will take place at the Holiday Inn Hull Marina on Friday 12 May, from midday until 1.30pm, and will also include updates on the timeline for the Castle Street scheme.

BUSINESSES in East Yorkshire could fold as a result of a “nightmare” online system designed to help them challenge their rates liability. Business rates are a major overhead for many businesses, and a revaluation process, which came to a head in recent months, produced winners and losers. Some saw their business rates reduced as the result of a cut in the rateable value (RV) of their property, and some qualified for 100 per cent rates relief as the threshold was doubled to £12,000. Others were hit with sizeable increases, prompting the Chancellor to try to soften the blow with measures in this year’s Budget. Adrian Smith, of AS Rating, said the new “check, challenge, appeal” website, which is being phased in by the Valuation Office Agency (VOA), could trip up a lot of users with processes that are rigid and timeconsuming. He said: “Businesses and their agents need to register with the Government Gateway, identify whether they should challenge their assessment and then start the procedure. “Then they wait for up to 18 months, and some businesses could fold in that time. It is a nightmare and people will find it very difficult to deal with it.” The new rating list came into

‘Nightmare rates system could see businesses fold’ Continued from PAGE 1 curate because the calculations do not allow for the changes in the Budget.” Specific concerns are that individuals may have to submit their own applications for small business relief, whereas in the past some local authorities made the change automatically. Some new properties may not yet have a valuation, but the occupiers will still become liable for the full, backdated amount once a figure is set. Mr Smith said: “If someone thinks their assessment is incorrect it is up to them to tell the VOA what they think the assessment should be and why, and that means going through a longwinded process. “The mood among business people is still one of concern and confusion and I think it is going to get worse because the system will become clogged up.” Last week, the Mail reported how the East Yorkshire branch of the Federation of Small Business (FSB) was calling on Hull City Council to reimburse rates to businesses that claimed they had been left out of pocket by the public realm works. However, anticipated backlogs to the new system mean Hull businesses seeking to challenge rates paid in previous years could well find themselves at the back of the queue. Businesses which face a large increase or decrease could also find their calculations thrown into disarray by the transitional system which introduces changes gradually. Tom Penrose, director at PPH Commercial said: “There is a massive anomaly in the system. In London, for example, the RV of some premises has gone up dramatically, whereas locally we have seen examples of the RV of a building fall from £150,000 to £50,000. “These changes are being phased in, which benefits a business in London, who will see their business rates increase slowly. In Hull, however, rates will decrease by a small percentage at a time, meaning they are effectively at a disadvantage.”

Street food to spice up city’s evening economy Food, drink and entertainment on menu at new monthly event By Catherine Lea Business Reporter c.lea@hulldailymail.co.uk

A NEW venture designed to add a bit of “va-va-voom” to Hull’s evening economy is launching in Hull tomorrow. Food, drink and entertainment will be on the menu in the newlook Trinity Square to mark the launch of Hull Street Food Nights. Kicking off at 4pm, the package is designed to attract people after they’ve left their city centre shops and offices, bringing businesses together and giving them a reason to stay and spend after the working day has ended. A series of events will be held monthly and it is hoped the initiative will produce a spin-off for other food and drink businesses as crowds take the opportunity to “make a night of it” after the 9pm close. Kathryn Shillito, HullBID city centre manager, said: “We came up with the idea of Hull Street Food Nights after talking to our contacts in food, drink and entertainment. “Between us, we have put together a programme which can really help the city centre evening economy. “It will feature high-quality, award-winning food and drink and fantastic entertainment which we hope will attract people into the city centre, and the starting point is to target the people who are already here.” Among the businesses taking part is Shoot the Bull, which

Gourmet burger business Kerb Edge, which has been a leader in the development of the street food sector and has now embarked on a £40,000 investment programme to build a national profile, is also involved. Other businesses selling their wares include Tapasya@ Marina, Go Dutch Pancakes and

Cocoa Chocolatier, with drinks from local bars and brewers including Oscars Bar, Rift Bar and Furley and Co. The entertainment programme will be led by Mark Page and will feature live performances by local bands including Delta Vega, Fronteers and the HarriWatts Band. There will also be fire performers, stilt walkers Indian dancers and acrobats. Mrs Shillito said: “We’re

already getting good feedback from people who work in the city centre and plan to delay their journey home to enjoy the fun with friends and colleagues.” Hull Street Food Nights are sponsored by Tesco stores across the city and supported by Hullbased marquee and event equipment supplier, All Occasions. After tomorrow’s launch, events will continue on May 25, June 22, July 27, August 17 and September 21.

MKM building on success with three new branches Hull-based builders’ merchant unveils strong financial results By Catherine Lea Business Reporter c.lea@hulldailymail.co.uk

MKM Building Supplies is continuing to expand its branch network after a strong year of sales and revenue growth. New branch openings in Crewe, Sharston in Manchester and Galashiels in Scotland, mean the Hull-based builders’ merchant now has 47 branches throughout the UK. Yesterday, the company, which is headquartered in Stoneferry Road unveiled a sterling set of financial results, driven by strong demand in the UK builders’ merchant market, product range extensions, and “sensible margin control”. Group revenues grew 13.2 per cent while the business saw a 51.3 per cent leap in profit before tax for the past financial year. The company also notched up a £19.9m operating profit for the financial year ending September 30 – up from £15.6m in 2015. David Kilburn, executive chairman of MKM, said: “We are pleased to announce another strong full-year financial performance, delivering 13 per cent

‘CONTINUED GROWTH’: David Kilburn. revenue growth over the period to over £284m, as well as growth in EBITDA [earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization] and profit before tax. “Our strong performance was driven by factors including a resilient RMI [repair, maintenance and improvement] market against the backdrop of Brexit, together with product range

extensions, including the rollout of kitchen and bathroom showrooms across many of our branches, sensible margin control and good working capital management.” Founded in Hull in 1995, MKM is now the UK’s largest independent builders’ merchant, providing building, plumbing, timber and heating supplies to builders, specialist tradespeople and the general public. The group operates a unique business model in which branch directors own an equity stake in their branch. It also operates an incentive scheme for all staff that is based on branch profitability. Mr Kilburn said: “We continue to benefit from our unique business model, which sees branch director’s take an equity stake in their branch and a share of profits. “This allows us to attract, retain and incentivise the best talent, both financially and through autonomy, which plays out in levels of customer service. “The UK builders’ merchant market is anticipated to grow by 12 per cent to £13 billion by 2020.

Whilst rising inflation may reduce expectations for growth, we are still seeing strong demand driven by a backlog of RMI and a healthy new-build market, supported by Government incentive schemes, continued good availability of mortgage finance and the low interest rate environment.” Mr Kilburn said sales pricing remained competitive, but greater buying power, continued support from the supply base, and scrutiny of costs had seen operating margins improve, with the improvement in profitability driven by the higher volumes of business. He said: “We have started to see some cost pressures in the supply chain, but this is largely mitigated by sourcing a relatively large proportion of our products from our high-quality UK supplier base. “We have a good track record of managing our margins, a strong balance sheet, and we will continue to invest in expanding our UK branch network, as well as in organic growth opportunities across the existing branch network to meet ongoing demand and deliver continued growth.”

Plastics firm’s fantastic new home Manufacturer moves to refurbished premises in Humber Enterprise Park A HULL manufacturer is gearing up for growth after moving into its new home at Humber Enterprise Park (HEP). Previously based in Carlton Street, west Hull, Dearing Plastics has more than doubled its workspace after moving to a newly refurbished 40,000sq ft warehouse at Brough’s HEP. Andy Harris, director of Dearing Plastics, said: “Our location now is obviously quite different to Hull, but the image of the site is fantastic. “We have a lot of loyal customers and are exporting across the globe, and we work with many blue chip companies. “Being able to showcase our products here, and having the additional security on the gates and room for storage, gives us greater kudos when attracting new business. It offers clients reassurance that their investment in tooling and products is safeguarded on our site. “When I first looked at this unit, I thought it might be too big – although we had outgrown

Carlton Street, this seemed quite vast. “But once we got up here and had a look around I could really picture the business here.” Dearing Plastics began as a small family firm in 1986. It is now the UK’s biggest producer of first-aid boxes, and exports its products all over the world. The company manufactures hundreds of bespoke products, parts and widgets for companies ranging from local caravan firms to international toy manufacturers. During the move, staff worked around the clock to ensure the business lost just two weeks of production through the relocation process – no mean feat considering the sheer size of some of the machinery Dearing has invested in. Mr Harris said: “We work closely with our clients to see

how we can help them. “We recently bought some machinery that enabled us to take on a new contract, and that has opened up possibilities with other clients, but that particular piece of machinery took up a lot of floor space at our former premises. “Now we have the room to expand and invest in new machinery. The attraction of the park’s Enterprise Zone status with no business rates also means that we can channel such overhead costs into investment in more machinery, leading to GROWING BUSINESS: Andy Harris, of Dearing Plastics, in the company’s new premises increased production and more at Humber Enterprise Park. £58.8m facility at Saltend to open in 2019 BP SAYS a new wood pellet plant at its Saltend site will provide “an exciting new platform for growth” as the company marks its 50th year of operations in Hull. BP at Saltend manufactures acetic acid and acetic anhydride – products that provide key raw materials in food preservation and pharmaceuticals, as well as textiles, bottles, packaging and film products. The city is also home to one of BP’s main global research and technology centres. Last month BP, Accsys Technologies and MDF producer Medite announced the creation of a consortium, Tricoya Ventures UK Limited (TVUK), to build and operate the world’s first Tricoya wood elements acetylation plant. Set to open in 2019, the £58.8m facility will manufacture Tricoya acetylated wood – a durable wood product that can be used in joinery, decking and structural engineering. Nigel Dunn, vice-president of BP global acetyls, said: “The creation of this new consortium provides an exciting new platform for growth for our BP Hull facility. “The co-location of the Tricoya Ventures UK plant with our acetic acid facility creates natural synergies and the foundation for a great partnership. “BP has a long history in Hull and we are proud to be able to find new opportunities to support economic growth and diversity in the region.” Over the past 50 years, BP has invested millions in its two acetic acid manufacturing plants at the Saltend Chemicals Park, which has been home to a new generation of chemical processes. Today, the site hosts some of BP’s most

innovative and cutting-edge operations. BP’s two acetyls plants are the largest producers of acetic acid in Europe and also hosts one of the principal global research and technology centres for petrochemicals. Today, BP is one of seven world-class chemicals and energy businesses which operate from the chemicals park. The new wood acetylation plant will manufacture acetylated Tricoya wood chips. These wood chips are treated with the acetic anhydride produced by BP Chemicals at Saltend, and then used to produce highperformance MDF or particle board panels. BP will invest more than £19.9m in the venture over a two-year period. The new facility also received funding through a business investment grant from the Green Port Growth Programme, which is administered by East Riding and Hull City Councils. Up to 130 jobs are expected to be created through the construction of the new facility. Once operational, it is expected to support 30 new jobs. Paul Clegg, Accsys CEO and chairman of Tricoya Technologies Limited (TTL) chairman said: “We are pleased to have secured a new manufacturing capacity for Tricoya wood elements that will allow us to take advantage of the growing market opportunity for Tricoya, which we believe to be substantial with continued growing demand for this product.”

BIGINTERVIEW Shaping the future of the Humber workforce OVER the past decade, workforce skills and requirements have changed dramatically. There are jobs today that didn’t exist 10 years ago — data scientists, social by Anita Pace, media managers, app chairman of developers — and five Bondholders years from now, there will be new roles that we don’t recognise today. But whilst the commercial and industrial world has reinvented itself, the English curriculum remains largely unchanged since its introduction back in 1904. Recently, as part of the Government’s Industrial Strategy, we have heard of the UK’s need to boost links between schools and industry in order to deliver sufficient people with the right skills. Helping prepare students for ‘life after class’ means adopting a more practical and applied approach to education – and there’s overwhelming agreement that providing experience-based learning is critical to addressing the current performance gaps. Putting this in to context, there are over 200,000 engineering roles per annum in the UK that remain unfulfilled, meaning there’s a huge shortage of skilled individuals in this area alone. The very subject of providing the right skills to enable young people to embrace future careers was addressed at our latest Bondholder Breakfast just two weeks ago. The event, held at the state-of-the-art Humber UTC (University Technical College) in Scunthorpe, recognised the milestones reached in creating a unique and dynamic curriculum, borne out of a need to drive local economies and backed by industry. Over £500m of capital has been raised to create 50 UTCs across the UK thus far – building somewhat of an “educational ecosystem” – transforming curricula and embracing industry as well as technology. £20 million has been invested in two purpose-built UTCs located here in the Humber region: the Humber UTC in Scunthorpe and the new Ron Dearing UTC in Hull. Their purpose is to deliver innovative, high-quality education that combines technical, practical and academic learning for 14 to 19-year-olds. Backed by the University of Hull, each college is employer-led, meaning some of the most successful global businesses within the region are directly involved in shaping the curriculum. Companies such as British Steel, Centrica Storage, DONG Energy, Singleton Birch, Cristal, Siemens, KCOM, RB, Spencer Group and Smith & Nephew are examples of local companies actively working with our UTCs to help to inspire and equip our young people with the skills they need to build the careers they want, and in doing so, helping to build a knowledgerich society for the future. Our Bondholder members tell us the greatest challenge they face is attracting and retaining talent. Ensuring we’re growing our own talent, with the skills that are relevant for our local employers, is therefore critical to driving the long-term economic growth of our region.

Bedtime story inspired mum-of-three to rescue herself from dreary job Sally Wray, managing director of GoHire, speaks to Catherine Lea about taking brave step into the unknown

W

ould you ever buy a business that you knew nothing about? In January 2015, Sally Wray took a chance and did just that, taking her career into her own hands after years of feeling unsatisfied at work. From working as a legal adviser for Hull City Council to teaching adults in further education, Sally is not short of varied work experience, but the decision to buy a tool hire company has taken her down an entirely new and unexpected path. After snapping up the former Arnott Plant Hire business in Hawthorn Avenue, west Hull, Sally – who admitted at the time she “knew nothing about tools” – rebranded and modernised the business, and embarked on steep learning curve to become an expert in her chosen field. She said: “I’d always had a yearning to do something different. I just knew that I was looking for something to take me away from my job, which had become dreary and overly bureaucratic. “Even though worrying about cash flow, chasing debtors and managing staff have been the toughest aspects of owning my own business, I really do feel that I am the master of my own destiny and really enjoy going to work. “Whilst it continues to be the hardest and most challenging thing I have ever undertaken, it’s by far the most rewarding.” A mother to three girls, Sally says it was reading a particular story at bedtime that made her realise it was time to kick start a change. She said: “The story was a fairytale and at one point my middle daughter asked me, ‘when is the prince going to come and rescue the princess?’

BRAVE MOVE: Sally Wray, of Go Hire in Goulton Street, west Hull. “My other daughter instantly replied with, ‘she doesn’t need a prince, she can rescue herself,’ and it hit me. “I was the one that would rescue myself.” Now the director of her own company, GoHire, is certainly a far cry from working in local government. Offering tool hire and repair services for both commercial and domestic use, as well as selling products, the business is growing and Sally’s entrepreneurial spirit cannot be curbed. Despite her previous lack of knowledge about the industry, after taking the time to develop and modernise the small business she had bought, within ten months the determined businesswoman was in a position to grow the company. In October 2015, she moved GoHire to larger premises. GoHire, which is now based in Goulton Street, west Hull, was recently awarded the SafeHire Certification, an accolade that attests to the standard of GoHire’s hire and repair processes. If there is anything that can be learned from Sally’s story, it’s that hard work does indeed pay off. “I am working really hard and have learned so much, I feel sure that by putting all the right systems and processes in place and really looking after our customers, we are already successful and hope this will continue.”

Picture: Peter Harbour

Looking ahead to the future, Sally said the sky is the limit for GoHire. “I joined For Entrepreneurs Only (FEO) at the very beginning and would recommend anyone thinking about going into business, or even already established to get involved,” she said. “It’s a fantastic organisation of business people who volunteer their valuable time to help people like me get their businesses moving in the right direction. “I am growing the company and might not have had the courage to make such big changes on my own, but the FEO programmes and individual members have helped, advised and supported me.” Spotting an opportunity in the region’s burgeoning offshore industry, Sally recently launched a new arm to the business, and has plans to open an additional depot on the opposite side of the city to meet demand. She said: “I have just set up an offshore tool hire business, which is going really well, and I would really like to open another depot in the east of the city. “I can see there are many opportunities open to me, all I have to do is grab them. “I would urge anyone looking to buy their own business to turn off their heart and only think with their head – but don’t let fear cripple you. “Being brave is much more fun than being scared.”

Chain reaction for independents Opportunities as ‘multiples’ leave high streets THE march of chain stores away from the region’s high streets could present opportunities for independent traders. New figures show there were more “multiple” stores leaving Yorkshire and the Humber’s high streets last year than moving onto them. The research, compiled by PwC and the Local Data Company (LDC), found 27 shops closed in Hull between January and December, reducing the number of chains from 296 to 290. Matthew Hopkinson, director of the LDC, said: “Town and city centres have seen the loss of chain retailers for the past seven years, so it is no surprise to see this trend continue. “What is of concern, however, is the significant slowdown in openings of chains on our high streets, with many favouring out-of-town locations where large store formats, free parking and lower costs play to the all-important consideration of convenience.”

By Catherine Lea Business Reporter c.lea@hulldailymail.co.uk

The findings revealed the number of multiples in Hessle Road had fallen, from 20 to 19, while Beverley had seen three chain stores close and two open, bringing the number of multiples in the town to 114. Pocklington fared better, with two new shops opening their doors there, while one closed, leaving it one of the few towns in Yorkshire that had enjoyed a net increase. Tobacconists, jewellers, toy shops and coffee shops were among those growing at the fastest rate, while fashion shops, banks and recruitment agencies were the hardest hit. Mr Hopkinson said: “Leisure, such as food and beverage, outlets is the only business category that has seen growth in 2016 but this has also seen the significant slow-down in openings, which is perhaps a reflection of a bubble starting to burst after

years of significant growth.” Though the figures appear to paint a gloomy picture, they do not take into account the number of independent traders that have seized the opportunity to set up their stall. Jim Harris, chairman of Hull Business Improvement District, said: “This is a national problem, if not international problem, but while we see the likes of Jaeger closing as a result of global pressures, we also see a lot of positive movement locally. “Part of what City of Culture is echoing is the desire for a joined-up approach, whereby if someone comes to the city centre to see a play they also want a meal, and perhaps to stay overnight. “There are some great independents opening up, there are some amazing things going on in the Fruit Market area, and soon we will have a 140-bed Hilton hotel, which I don’t think anyone could have envisaged five years ago, let alone ten years ago.”

MOVING OUT: Jaeger in Beverley is closing after the company went into administration.

Putting finishing touches to refurbished fire station £500,000 revamp is firm’s third project for Humberside service By Catherine Lea

A HULL construction firm is nearing completion of works to Bransholme Fire Station, marking the third project completed for Humberside Fire and Rescue in the past two years. In 2015, Hobson and Porter delivered a £2m state-of-the-art station in Clough Road, North Hull. The two-storey building, which includes dormitories, a kitchen, a canteen and a fitness suite, has since been shortlisted in the RICS Yorkshire and Humber Awards. The company has also transformed Immingham West Fire Station, in North Lincolnshire, into a purpose-built training facility, complete with living quarters, a classroom and an outdoor training area including a marine firefighting unit. The firm is now putting the finishing touches to Bransholme Fire Station, where a £500,000 internal refurbishment will see an overhaul of facilities such as the gymnasium, welfare pods, dormitories and kitchen area. David Blades, Hobson and Porter’s business development director, said: “For the projects at Clough Road and Immingham West, we were required to work to a tight programme in order to get the new facilities open and ready for operation as soon as possible. “The refurbishment of Bransholme Fire Station requires a phased set of works in order to keep the facility open during works.

STATE OF THE ART: The £2m fire station in Clough Road, North Hull. Inset, Bransholme Fire Station is undergoing a £500,000 refurbishment. “This is a challenging project as there are many considerations for the team to take into account – such as access for the public and fire service staff, restricting of work areas, noise pollution and much more. “We have a very good relationship with Humberside Fire and Rescue Service and are working closely with them to ensure the

new facilities are ready for use as soon as possible.” Hobson and Porter is headquartered in Malmo Road, Sutton Fields, and operates across Yorkshire and Lincolnshire. Mr Blades said the Bransholme project is due to be completed in July. “We have received positive feedback from our work at Clough

How business rates may affect commercial property Advertisement Feature

usiness Rates are a crucial consideration for the majority of businesses, however, this is especially the case for commercial tenants on the acquisition of a new or renewal lease or those business clients looking to purchase new premises to occupy themselves. Even landlords/investors need to consider the rateable value of any existing or new property and how this may affect the types of tenants you can attract. At Wilkin Chapman, we are ever vigilant of these considerations and have kept a keen

Mike Stoney, Solicitor in the commercial property team at Wilkin Chapman Solicitors

eye on the increasing reform of business rates over the last six months. It has been well documented that the late reassessment that was announced in September 2016 has caused wide spread financial headaches for small to medium businesses across the country. There have been reported increases of over 200% for some retail properties and many businesses have had to relocate from their premises. This could have dramatic implications when occupying

under lease. Given that our region, arguably more than most, relies heavily on our small and medium businesses prospering, it is clear that business rates are a real challenge for our local areas. In the March budget, the government announced some welcome reform on the area. These three new measures were introduced: ■ A cap of £50 per month for small businesses which are about to lose their small business rate relief. ■ A reduction of £1,000 per annum for pubs with rateable value under £100,000. ■ £300 million discretionary

fund for Local Authorities to allocate to cases of hardship, using a formula to be provided by the Communities Secretary. However, whether this will address the issues surrounding the hike in business rates completely, or merely ease the pressure in the short term is yet to be seen. Our commercial property specialists are well aware of the pressures you face and are more than happy to discuss how business rates may affect any property transaction that you are considering. ■ If you require further information, please call Mike Stoney on 01482 398398, email mike.stoney@wilkinchapman. co.uk or visit www.wilkin chapman.co.uk

Road and Immingham West fire stations,” he said. “We hope the upgrade at Bransholme will be just as well received when work is complete.” He said: “It was essential the facility was completed in time for the beginning of our 13-week firefighter course. Any delay would have meant serious disruption to the tight training schedule.

SECURITY COMPANY GUARDING FUTURE OF LOCAL TALENT Global defence firm moves to centrepiece of £15m development STATE-OF-THE-ART offices and the city’s burgeoning digital talent has prompted an international defence and security company to make Hull its home. Saab has chosen C4DI as its first UK base in the North of England. Simon Read, UK director from Saab’s Networks and Public Safety business unit, said “Saab has five offices in the UK but they are all in the South. “We have clients nationwide, so wanted the business to have a presence in a northern city. “We already have a small team working in this area, and courses such as the University of Hull’s computer science degree means there is a lot of great talent produced locally. “However, a lot of those graduates don’t always stay in the area, meaning the city loses this talent. Opening in Hull means we can hopefully capture some of this talent and ensure it remains in the city.” C4DI is now Saab’s UK base for a new software development team customising SAFE – a cutting-edge

system used by police and other emergency services organisations. Mr Read said “We looked a at a lot of different offices, and C4DI was above and beyond the right place for the business. It offers the opportunity for us to be part of a technology hub and digital community with software development expertise. Our intention is to work with people within C4DI on research and development projects in areas such as artificial intelligence and predictive analytics.” The C4DI building is the centrepiece of the £15m @TheDock development within the rapidly evolving Fruit Market waterside quarter. Developed and owned by Hul regeneration company Wykeland Group, it opened in December 2015. According to the recent Tech Nation report, Hull’s digital sector

SMEs voice concern over skills drain INDUSTRY: More than half of small businesses with EU workers are worried about accessing people with the right skills post-Brexit. Our region currently employs thousands of people in food production, agriculture and manufacturing – three of the industries predicted to be particularly hard hit by post-Brexit policy and uncertainty. A report released yesterday by the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) found a fifth of small Humber firms currently employ EU staff, with 59 per cent of SMEs voicing concerns about a post-Brexit skills drain. Gordon Millward, FSB regional chairman, above, said: “EU workers are a vital part of our economy, helping to plug chronic skills gaps across a wide range of sectors, and filling jobs in an already tight labour market. “From packers, to mechanics, to graphic designers, small employers need to be able to hire the right person, for the right job at the right time. “Securing the right to remain for EU workers in the UK must be a priority. It’s also crucial small firms are given time after the UK leaves the EU to prepare for the new immigration arrangements. “There can’t be a sudden cliff edge preventing small firms from accessing the workers they need.”

‘Hull is a hotbed for manufacturing talent’

Firm making containers for staff under attack says city is the perfect base By Catherine Lea

Saab moves into new office space Continued from PAGE 1 has annually boosted the local economy by about ÂŁ254m over four years, with a 21 per cent increase in digital businesses during the past year alone. The report also named Hull as the most cost-effective place in the country to run a tech business and said C4DI was driving digital growth by “providing co-working space, tech incubation and corporate innovationâ€?. C4DI managing director John Connolly said: “It’s fantastic that a company such as Saab, which has a worldwide reputation for technological innovation, is joining the C4DI community. Increasingly, the tech capabilities required by large companies are highly specialised and delivered by niche digital businesses or individual experts, which we have in abundance at C4DI. “We not only house those experts, but also use them to build specialist teams to lead or work on projects for larger companies.â€? Dominic Gibbons, managing director of Wykeland Group, said: “One of the key reasons for establishing C4DI was to create a focal point for the digital economy in the Hull area, to support the growth of local companies and employment and to attract inward investment. “Saab’s decision indicates C4DI is really helping to put Hull on the map as a centre for digital excellence and innovation and it will raise further the city’s profile as a tech hotspot.â€?

THE managing director of a firm behind a product that protects workers in some of the world’s most dangerous locations has hailed the city as a “hotbed of manufacturing talent. Crewshield designs and manufactures armoured containers to protect employees from terrorist attacks. Mike Samways, who together with Lawrie Hodges founded Crewshield in 2011, said: “The Hull and the Humber is a real hotbed of specialised manufacturing talent in a very small radius. “Because what we do is so specialised, there were only a few companies who could do what we wanted, and we found these companies in Hull – all within a few miles of each other. It was Mr Samways’s former role in the Royal Navy that prompted the idea for the Citadel. Having specialised in explosive ordnance disposal, diving and boarding operations, he spotted an opportunity for a fully armoured, disguised container that would protect ships’ workers from threats. By providing a safe haven for employees, the Citadel had the added benefit of enabling Navy personnel to instantly distinguish between the attackers and the attacked – the attackers being the ones left roaming the ship after the alarm had been raised. Having searched nationwide for a company whose expertise

Below, Crewshield director Lawrie Hodges inside one of the protection units. would enable the manufacture of the Citadel, Mr Samways was signposted to laser cutting and bending specialists Phoenix Hull, powder coating specialist Aztec Coatings and Pioneer Manufacturing – three Hull firms that operate under the LG Holdings umbrella. Mr Samways said: “Phoenix Hull, one of the best laser cutting and bending companies in the country is next to Aztec Coatings, one of the best powder coaters. “Further down the road is Pioneer Manufacturing, one of the best fabrications firms. So Hull is a great hub for manufacturing. Though Crewshield initially manufactured its Citadel

refuges as a safe retreat for ships crews when threatened by pirate attack, such as those off the coast of Somalia, the 2013 terrorist attack on a gas plant in Algeria prompted a substantial rise in demand for a land-based application of the refuge. Crewshield now provides its Citadel to private companies,

governments and the United Nations, with key export markets including the Middle East and North Africa. Last week, Crewshield was awarded a Queen’s Enterprise Award for International Trade – its second Royal recognition having last year picked up a Queen’s Enterprise Award for Innovation. Lawrie Hodges, director of Crewshield and LG Holdings, said: “For us to be doing what we’re doing, as a small group of companies in Hull, is fantastic. “Crewshield, while a small company, has shown that a good concept, backed up by high quality products and service delivery can still deliver the best of British manufacturing.

RENEWABLES: Bostonrix Wind Ltd has appointed Steve Danson to head up the business. The joint venture between JR Rix and Sons and Boston Energy provides strategic assets and services for wind farm construction and maintenance projects, including crew transfer vessels, skilled technicians and engineers. Boston Energy employs more than 100 technicians, many of whom come from East Yorkshire’s famed aerospace industry, while the Rix Group owns a fleet of crew transfer vessels and other strategic portrelated assets. Mr Danson, who has worked in the renewables sector for more than seven years, including roles with Renewable Energy Systems (RES offshore) and Centrica, said: “Rix and Boston Energy both have great reputations in the wind energy sector individually, so by joining forces to create BostonRix Wind, we are spearheading a new direction for the industry, and I am delighted to be heading that up.

Boss says latest contract could pave the way for more to follow By Catherine Lea Business Reporter c.lea@hulldailymail.co.uk

IT HAS created green golf havens across the world, from a villa in Barbados to a back garden in Bradford. Now, an East Yorkshire firm is helping to create a UK first after winning a major contract with a holiday park operator in Cornwall. European Golf in Cottingham is creating the country’s first full-sized golf course covered entirely with artificial grass. Using specialist synthetic grass handpicked and imported from Arizona, the nine-hole course is being painstakingly laid to ensure it offers the same consistent ball speed and “true roll expected of “real grass, as well as being able to withstand any conditions the British weather can throw at it. Company founder David Lowe said, although the deal was unique, he believed it could open the door for similar contracts at sites across the UK. He said: “We have been creating golf greens since 2006. “A lot of our work has been driving ranges and short green areas, but we have done a variety of different projects, from Cottingham Parks to the pirate adventure golf course at One Stop Golf, in National Avenue. “However, nobody has ever

‘KUDOS’: David has installed artificial grass at One Stop Golf. gone all out and done a full-sized course in the UK using artificial grass, so this is a first. “I think once other people realise it can be done, and done really well, more contracts will follow. Mr Lowe founded European Golf in 2006 together with a business partner who, perhaps unsurprisingly, was also an enthusiastic golfer. Mr Lowe was at the time based at American Golf in Castle Street, where he had worked for 13 years, but having spotted the potential to become his own boss, he left, and so European Golf was born. Since then the company’s qualified installers have worked

their magic at leisure complexes and sports clubs throughout the country, adding putting greens, chipping greens and the like to indoor and outdoor settings. Last year, the company worked with European Tour professional Chris Hanson, creating a putting green in his back garden in Huddersfield, to enable the sportsman to prepare for his matches from the comfort of his own home. While catering for die-hard golfers has been key to the company’s growth, equally important has been enabling venues to introduce newcomers to the sport – often in venues or settings they would not necessarily associate with the game.

So, as well as the pirate “crazy golf course at One Stop Golf, European Golf was also responsible for the venue’s popular footgolf course. Mr Lowe said he believed part of the reason golf course operators have previously shied away from using artificial grass on full-sized courses was the cost. He said: “Compared with ‘real’ grass, the initial outlay is relatively high, but once laid it will be almost maintenance-free. “It will never need cutting or weeding, there is no chance of it drying out in the hot weather, it wont go patchy or need re-seeding or watering, so the cost savings over the long term can be quite considerable. On top if this, it means a course can open 365 days a year. The nine-hole course, in Redruth, will require 450 rolls of grass, with European Golf staff racing against the weather to ensure they achieve a pristine finish. Mr Lowe said: “This latest contract has created jobs, which is great, but equally important is the kudos in being the company that delivers a UK first. “Although this grass can withstand any condition, the weather has to be dry for us to lay it. “For this reason, we are crossing our fingers it does not rain.

the Hull firms to have benefited from the programme. The Hull signage manufacturer was founded in 2004 when the company showcased its stadia branding skills at the then-new KC Stadium in Hull. It helped the 25,586-seat venue arrive with a bang, prompting other potential customers to ask for a similar service. The company was awarded a grant to support investment in more efficient and environmentally friendly printing technology, enabling it to provide a wider range of services and appeal to new markets. Managing director Rob Daysley said: “The introduction of the new machinery has increased our workflow, reducing the bottleneck in production and giving us the ability to produce more internally. “The reduction in outsourcing gives us a further competitive edge in finding new customers and markets, and also means that as the business is able to grow, more money will be retained within the local economy. David Kilburn, executive chairman of MKM Building Supplies and chairman of the Growing the Humber funding panel, said: “Growing the Humber has already been successful in helping businesses of all shapes and sizes to make key investments that enable them to grow and employ more people. “We are pleased that additional money from the LGF allows us to continue providing support to businesses that promote economic growth for the Humber. East Yorkshire firms with projects that require funding can find out more about applying for a grant by visiting www. humberlep.org or calling 01482 485260.

Family firm’s 125 years of growth Company continues to create a legacy with each generation of owners AN EAST Yorkshire family firm has invested more than £4m in the redevelopment of its flagship Goole site. Jos. Richardson and Son started life as a coal delivery business in 1892. Today, it employs more than 130 people and owns the Glews car dealership in Goole, and five service stations across the region. Next month, the business will mark 125 years of growth with the official opening of its new service station and truck stop development, off Rawcliffe Road. Managing director Joseph Richardson said: “We’ve always been the sort of company that has tried to change and keep up with trends and that has set us in good stead. “We realised many years ago it was no longer good enough for a service station just to sell petrol and a chocolate bar. These days you have to do food, coffee, groceries, parking and more; people use them as a destination and stay for longer.” The multi-million pound redevelopment has resulted in an extended service station and forecourt at the Goole site, with a Subway franchise and a three-acre truck stop that

attracts around 65 vehicles a night. The investment also included a contribution towards the cost of installing a new roundabout and access road off the A614. The company was founded by Joseph Richardson, whose sons Henry and Harold joined the business during the early part of the 20th century. During the 1940s, brothers David

and Michael became the third generation of the family to join the business which, by this time, was operating four retail coal depots, with a fleet of 15 coal lorries. By the time David’s son, Tim, joined the company in 1966, it also had a credit loan arm and travel agency, though the latter was sold in the 1970s. In 1978 the family acquired Glews Garage in Goole,

which was then a single workshop. In 1988, David and Tim sold the coal business to the British Fuel Company. As the focus shifted from coal to cars, Glews expanded beyond all recognition with the addition of a Vauxhall franchise, a Peugeot franchise, service workshops, an accident repair centre, a 24 -hour recovery service and a Texaco petrol

forecourt. During the late 1990s, Tim had the foresight to develop a 24-hour petrol service station with a convenience store and café – a move that set the firm on course for a 25-year period of expansion, thanks to the acquisition of four further service stations. Tim’s son, Joseph, and daughter, Jane, are now the fifth generation of the Richardson family to run the business alongside their co-directors Karen Marshall and Graham Andrews. Joseph said: “We have ambition to expand further, but it has to be the right fit for us. “We’ve had numerous opportunities to acquire more sites, but we’re very strict about what we’re looking for. “I think that one of the key reasons for our longevity is that we’ve always been quite cautious; we reinvest the vast majority of our profits back into the company. “Also, through the generations, we’ve ensured the business remains 100 per cent family-owned. “It’s all about creating a legacy and each generation trying to leave it in better shape than the one before.”

Holdstock, Nicholls, Train & Co celebrate anniversary

oldstock, Nicholls, Train & Co was established in 1987 and its partners have now worked together for three decades. In Hull’s City of Culture year, Holdstock, Nicholls, Train & Co is celebrating too, marking its 30th anniversary with a special event at Hull History Centre. The reception being held during the early evening of Wednesday, May 3, will see a gathering of about 150 professionals, partners, clients and staff. The cornerstone of this successful business has been the wealth of experience its team offers in auditing and accountancy, as well as a “hands-on” approach to providing bespoke solutions for clients. The firm, based in Anlaby Road, has always been dedicated to providing

high-quality services, including statutory audit, accounting, tax advice, company secretarial, business and retirement planning, bookkeeping and payroll services. Partner Mike Holdstock said: “We are able to establish relationships with our clients and associates that are based on trust. We listen to what people have to say and what they want, and respond to their needs.” Providing added value services is essential in today’s marketplace and this is one of the foundation stones of the Holdstock, Nicholls, Train & Co practice. The partners have gathered together a team of professionals capable of delivering this essential element to clients. Partner Paul Train said: “We have developed our role in elderly care plan-

ning, helping clients prepare their finances for retirement, and have cultivated exceptional relationships with other professionals to promote and expand this area of advice.” Taxation advice, both personal and business, is handled by the partners and their taxation department. Business planning services are a prominent part of the practice and the partnership advises on new start-ups, offering the client the most suitable solution, tailored to individual requirements. Its consultancy services include profit forecasts and reviews, company formations, acquisitions and disposals of businesses. Mike Holdstock said: “Planning for future expansion is essential for many of

our clients, but planning for retirement is equally important and organising an individual’s exit from a business can bring in to play complex rules and regulations.” The auditing practice is registered to carry on audit work in the UK and Ireland and regulated for a range of investment business activities by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales. ■ Holdstock, Nicholls, Train & Co is based at 593 Anlaby Road, Hull, HU3 6ST. Ramping up production Manufacturers seeing huge growth in orders from home and abroad MANUFACTURES across Hull and East Yorkshire are ramping up production following phenomenal growth in orders both from home and abroad. UK orders in the three months to April improved at the fastest pace since July 2014, while export orders recorded the strongest growth in six years. The figures, released this week by the CBI, echo Hull and Humber Chamber of Commerce’s Quarterly Economic Survey, which was released last week. Wold Top Brewery near Driffield was last year named Exporter of the Year at The Mail’s business awards in recognition of its

overseas success. Founded in 2003, the regional brewery now counts customers across the globe, with exports accounting for about 20 per cent of turnover. The brewery’s export and account manager Kate Belchin said: “Although the export market is still very up in the air while things play out on the political scene, we’re still seeing a good demand for our beers in the international market places. “We’ve found that importers like working

with small family businesses, where they can talk to the man in charge directly and get answers straight away. We can only hope that this trend continues.” But although sales and orders are on the up, local firms appear reluctant to invest in new plant and machinery. Rain Newton-Smith, CBI chief economist, said: “Exports have surged and firms are at their most optimistic about selling overseas in over four decades. Even so, the combination of the weak pound and recovering commodity prices means that cost pressures continue to build, and manufacturers report no sign of them abating.”

STILL A DEMAND: Wold Top Brewery’s export and account manager Kate Belchin says the company is still seeing demand for beers despite political uncertainty.

‘SHOCKING FIGURE’: MP Karl Turner says an estimated 50,000 businesses fail each year because of late payments.

Almost half of the region’s SMEs are hampered by late payments THE region’s economy is being seriously hampered by late payments, with almost half of the region’s small to medium-sized enterprises saying customers and clients stray beyond agreed payment terms. In total, 47 per cent of SMEs say customers and clients say they are affected by late payments, leaving almost a third (32 per cent) forced to delay payment to their own suppliers. Of those left chasing debts, 12 per cent said it impacts on their ability to pay their own staff on time, while 20 per cent have difficulty paying business bills such as energy, rates and rent. In east Hull alone, it is estimated 1,779 businesses could be owed as much as £16,351,913. The research, which was conducted by Bacs Payment Schemes Limited, found the

average late payment debt now stands at £32,185, which equates to a whopping £26.3bn across the UK. Hull East Labour MP Karl Turner said: “This shocking figure of £26.3bn is a result of big clients not paying our small businesses for months on end – and sometimes, just not paying them at all. “This means our local economy could be owed up to £16,351,913 in late payments. What’s truly shocking is that an estimated 50,000 businesses fail each year because of these late payments. “Averaged across the country, that could mean an estimated 35 businesses right here in east Hull are failing each year because larger clients just don’t

True picture in numbers ■ £32,185 - the average late payment debt. ■ 47 - the per cent of SMEs that say customers and clients stray beyond agreed payment terms. ■ 32 - per cent of SMEs forced to pay their own suppliers late as a result of late payments. ■ 12 - the per cent of SMEs who claim late payments impact on their ability to pay their own staff on time. ■ 29 - the per cent of directors who rely on costly overdrafts to make up for cash-flow shortfalls due to being paid late. pay them what they owe.” Mike Hutchinson, of Bacs, said the figures showed “the human cost” that late payments have on

SME owners. He said: “Very large figures sometime obscure the personal impact and sacrifice that many small to medium-size business owners have to bear in silence. “Our figures show that a large proportion of SME directors have to use their overdrafts to supplement cash flow, with around 20 per cent of small company directors paying themselves less in order to keep their businesses afloat.” Mr Turner said it was important people understood the impact the figures had on the local economy. He said: “Late payments hurt every local economy across the country. Those appalling national figures mean that our small businesses, our local entrepreneurs – the lifeblood of the city – are struggling.”

TAKE IT FROM SOMEONE WHO KNOWS BREXIT has already had a marked effect on personal and business finances. I believe, now that Article 50 has been triggered, there will be further fallout in the following areas: Investments and personal pensions Weaker sterling has sent the FTSE 100 to record highs and many pension pots are getting a boost. Those who invest in the stock market directly or through pensions and investments are also enjoying the bull market. East Yorkshire companies with overseas earnings will benefit too, as they declare their profits in sterling.

Kevin Ferriby, managing director of Informed Financial Planning, talks Brexit Final salary pensions Brexit has brought uncertainty to private sector final-salary pensions; overall the amount by which the FTSE 350 schemes are in deficit was three times higher at the end of 2016 than a year earlier. But this is only theoretical and many employers will meet their commitments in full. Readers considering transferring a final-salary pension have many different risks to consider.

Inflation A weak pound has reintroduced inflation. This is because importers get less for their money on world markets and have to pass higher prices on to customers. Winners: Will be anyone with stock market investments, big firms with overseas earnings. Losers: Will be pensioners on fixed incomes feeling the effects of inflation, clothing retailers (who import their stock), airlines and holiday companies.
