LAUNCH OF 2017 BUSINESS AWARDS CATEGORY BY CATEGORY PAGES 6-23

WE’LL RAISE A TOAST TO THE BEST OF BUSINESS

‘PRIVILEGE’: Hull Daily Mail editor Neil Hodgkinson.

The region’s number one business awards are back and this year, as we celebrate being the City of Culture, they promise to be bigger and better than ever before

T

he Hull Daily Mail Business Awards are back and bigger than ever before. From small companies and fledgling start-ups to major manufacturers and firms employing hundreds of staff, we will be shining a light on success from across the region. Now in their 17th year, the awards have firmly cemented their position as a highlight in Hull and East Yorkshire’s business calendar. This year, they will culminate with a glittering ceremony in November, where popular businessman and Bafta winner Dave Fishwick will entertain guests with his inspiring tale of defying market conditions to launch the Bank of Dave. Over the past 12 months, the region has played host to scores of good news stories, with jobs and wealth being created in factories and shop floors, business parks, offices and retail premises in every corner of the patch. Now, we need you to come forward and tell us about your achievements, so we

Neil Hodgkinson, editor of the Mail, said: “It is our privilege to once again launch the annual Hull Daily Mail Business Awards. “For more than a decade, these awards have been celebrating the best and

brightest individuals and companies from across the region. “They get bigger and better each year and much of this is down to the businesses and individuals who help to make Hull and East Yorkshire’s economy a force to be reckoned with. “From the firms making widgets and selling services locally to the exporters whose goods are sold across the globe, our region has a proud history of making and doing things. “Then there are the people whose investment and strong leadership helps to create the jobs and wealth that keeps the wheels of our economy moving. “Local firms remain resilient and realistic, with an appetite for growth and a determination to ‘get on with the job’ that is helping to build strong foundations for future generations.” There is no denying things have been tough for many companies, and riding the rocky waters that followed one of the harshest recessions in living history has

required dedication and determination. But now things are looking up for industries across the region. The renewables industry is witnessing rapid growth, thanks not only to the investments made by the likes of Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy and ABP but also the supply companies and ready workforce, without which the sector would not exist. The area’s hospitality sector is also enjoying a surge, helped in part by Hull’s City of Culture credentials together with a network of holiday parks and leisure facilities that make East Yorkshire a destination for thousands of visitors. Our area is home to some of Yorkshire’s biggest companies, but equally it is a hotbed of talent for entrepreneurial outfits of all shapes and sizes. The Hull Daily Mail Business Awards give these organisations the chance to celebrate their hard work while networking and sharing their success with fellow business people.

Life was no walk on the beach for Dave

AWA R D S 2 017 SPONSORED BY

One of TV’s most popular entrepreneurs who became a self-made millionaire will speak at the Hull Daily Mail Business Awards

H

ow do you make something from nothing? It is a question the young Dave Fishwick asked himself on numerous occasions. Launching his first business with just £250 and a red Capri, he went on to become one of Burnley’s most famous businessmen. Now a successful entrepreneur with a portfolio of business to his name, not to mention two Baftas and a host of television appearances, the question of how to make money from nothing seems a distant memory away, though it remains a problem for many fledgling entrepreneurs. In November, the self-made millionaire will be heading to Hull to speak at the Mail’s Business Awards about how he went from a Burnley boy with nothing to one of the most talked-about entrepreneurs on TV.

He said: “I came from a very poor background, but I am very proud of that background. “I left school at 16 and became a builder’s labourer. “I remember getting £27.50 a week on a YTS, and asking myself if there was a way to make money when you have nothing. “If you start with absolutely nothing, in a part of the country that is a tough place to live and operate, then you are starting on a back foot.” Not one to let back feet get in the way of moving forward, Dave went around local car garages, where he managed to convince one owner to take away a part-exchange car to sell. Having done it up himself, he sold it on and made the princely sum of £27 – as much as he was making as an apprentice, and for infinitely more satisfaction. “I did that again and again,” he said. “I soon realised that if you had the cash up front you could negotiate an even better deal, and that’s how it all started.” With his £250 and his red Capri, Dave went on to open his own garage, and after selling the occasional van he realised there was an opportunity to be had. Today, he is the owner of the biggest minibus supply business in Britain, but in 2008, a shift in his customers’ spending

habits – namely that they weren’t spending at all – sent his career path in an altogether different direction. He said: “In 2008, my minibus customers couldn’t get finance anymore. “Overnight the banks had stopped lending. I remember thinking, ‘have my customers done something terrible, have they moved house? Or is there another reason they cannot get money? “I then realised the reason stopped at the doorsteps of the banks. “I thought, if my customers are who they say they are, and will pay me when they say they will, why don’t I lend them the money? “So I did. “I worked out details like repayment terms and interest rates, lent them the money and they paid me back. It wasn’t rocket science.” It was this foray into the financial world that led to the hit TV series Bank of Dave, making the businessman a household name and laying the foundations for further TV shows, documentaries and a Sunday Times best-selling book, among other things. But while his face has now been beamed into living rooms across the globe, Dave continues to busy himself with the businesses he was building long before he appeared on TV. He said: “I love to travel and I am very lucky my TV work takes me around the world. “I still do a lot of filming in London and I love to travel, but I love to come home. “You should never forget where you came from, because then you might not get to where you want to be. “At the end of the day, I’m just a lad from Burnley that sells buses.”

BUSINESS ideas might happen by chance but success does not. Those who succeed in the ever-challenging world of business need dedication, passion, innovation and flair, not forgetting a lot of hard work. We are fortunate in Hull and East Yorkshire to have firms with bucketloads of these attributes, and more. Now it is time for these organisations and the individuals behind their success to step forward and be recognised. The Hull Daily Mail Business Awards are designed to celebrate success in all shapes and forms. With more categories up for grabs than ever before, the annual celebration of achievement gives local businesses, entrepreneurs and innovators the chance to reflect on how far they have come over the past 12 months. Mike Pennington, managing director and publisher of the Hull Daily Mail, said: “Growing and maintaining a business is not easy. “The economic sands may be shifting in our favour, but challenges remain, and businesses need more than just determination and sound financial sense to succeed – they need a lot of hard graft and passion. “As Hull celebrates its City of Culture year, all eyes are on the region. The city has been placed on a global stage like never before. Now is the chance to show others what we have all known for a long time – that Hull and East Yorkshire has a lot to be proud of, and our businesses, employers and entrepreneurs are key to this. “The Hull Daily Mail Business Awards will once

again prove the excellence and ingenuity that exists right here on our doorstep. Also watch out for a few surprises on this very special night.” The Mail’s awards are open to companies of all sizes. With separate categories for small, medium and large business of the year, as well as a prize for start-up company, the awards recognise the fact small businesses and start-ups are as important to our region as major employers. Production has now started at Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy’s blade factory at Green Port Hull and the energy company is showing its commitment to local firms by again backing this year’s Green Award. With City of Culture 2017 now well under way, the Tourism and Hospitality Award is likely to be hotly contested. This year, two new Culture Awards have been added, in recognition of the city’s year-long programme of arts and cultural events. When asked about their biggest asset, the first word on many employers’ lips is “our staff ”. Does someone you employ deserve to be put forward for Employee or Young Achiever of the Year? Uncertainty over Brexit appears to have done little to stifle the region’s appetite for selling overseas, with 44 per cent of local firms reporting an increase in export sales – up from 15 per cent in the previous quarter. The Mail awards will again seek to celebrate the best of the region’s exporters with the Exporter of the Year Award, while the Product or Service of the Year will also be up for a gong. Other award categories include Entrepreneur of the Year, Customer Focus, Innovation and Community Involvement. The awards ceremony will culminate with a special Lifetime Contribution Award. Whether you have entered the Mail’s Business Awards in the past, or this is your first time, we look forward to receiving your entry and hopefully raising a toast to your success at the awards dinner in November.

Hatfields Jaguar’s principle of customer care has been its driving force since the 1920s

H

atfields Jaguar Hull is this year backing the Hull Daily Mail Business Awards. Hatfields is the world’s oldest independent Jaguar retailer and the showroom that Ernest Hatfield opened in Sheffield in the 1920s was among the earliest to be launched anywhere in the world to promote the luxury Jaguar brand. Working on the same principles that have guided Hatfields for almost 100 years, Hatfields is now recognised as the leading independent Jaguar retailer group in the UK. Hatfields Jaguar Hull, in Saxon Way, Priory Park West, boasts the full complement of services for Jaguar owners in the Humber and North Lincolnshire region, including one of only a handful of approved body repair centres in the UK. The retailer’s sales and aftersales departments are equipped to provide the high standards of quality and service expected of a franchised business. Iain Towler is the head of business at Hatfields Jaguar in Hull. He said: “We’re interested in customer satisfaction, we want the experience to be one of relaxation and peace of mind. To us, it’s more important to welcome a customer to the Jaguar family as it is to sell them a car.” The team at Hatfields Jaguar Hull are used to spending time with their customers, chat-

ting with them and making sure they understand their needs and desires when it comes to purchasing a new car. “It’s about building relationships with our customers,” said Iain. “Customer loyalty and loyalty to the brand is something we score very highly on among other Jaguar dealers, nationally.” With a standard specification that includes leather seats and Xenon headlamps, the award-winning Jaguar range makes an impressive line-up. The Jaguar XF is the most popular in the range and has won more than 100 awards to date, while the Jaguar XE is the most advanced, efficient and refined sports saloon Jaguar has ever created. Personalisation is important to many Jaguar buyers and a new Jaguar can be as individual as a customer wants it to be. There again, many customers are happy with the car as it comes. Along with the full range of new Jaguars, there is an extensive selection of approved used vehicles, too. These cars are all approved by Jaguar, rigorously tested to make sure they meet the customer’s satisfaction. There is also a service, parts and accessories department, plus a body shop, which can offer aluminium repairs, providing full aftersales care. Visit www.hatfields.hull. jaguar.co.uk

CATEGORY 2017 Culture Awards

SPECIAL NIGHT: Made In Hull was one of the cultural highlights of the year so far.

BAE Systems is still thriving after 100 years in fast lane

Two special awards will celebrate Hull’s year in the cultural spotlight Mail teams up with BAE Systems to recognise a year to remember

T

he Hull Daily Mail is delighted to have linked up with partners BAE Systems to introduce two special awards to mark a very special year for the city. Sponsored by BAE Systems, these two awards will celebrate both public and private sector involvement, investment and imagination in helping attract and deliver what has already been a fantastic cultural injection for Hull and the East Riding. From the opening fireworks, through Made In Hull to attracting the Radio 1 Big

Weekend, Hull 2017 has already introduced a host of high-quality events to a local population and welcomed thousands of visitors from outside the area to our fair city. The way the public and private sector organisations have pulled together to make sure so much promise has become a reality is deserving of recognition and – for one year only – there will be two special awards on the night. These awards will be ultimately decided by the Hull Daily Mail and representatives from BAE Systems, but

they would like to hear ideas and suggestions from the public, businesses and those either taking part or organising events as to who they think could be worthy winners. Suggestions should be sent to t.short@hulldailymail. co.uk with the “culture award” in the subject line. Hull Daily Mail editor Neil Hodgkinson said: “These special awards will put the spotlight on the individuals and organisations whose efforts have made a significant impact on the city’s cultural status.

“Hull already had a rich and diverse cultural scene but there is no doubt our image across the UK and the world has been hugely enhanced already by Hull 2017. “That is set to continue and the public and private sector individuals, groups and businesses that are helping deliver this magnificent year should be recognised. “And we will take on board the opinions of the those involved as organisers, participants or watchers to make sure we make the right choice.”

BAE SYSTEMS: The company is one of the world’s largest defence companies, with approximately 83,400 employees spread across the globe, serving customers across the air, land, maritime and national security domains. Our site at Brough is a vital part of the air sector, and is one of the largest private sector employers in the East Riding with approximately 950 employees. This site has now been active for more than 100 years and is still thriving. We celebrated its centenary in 2016 and look forward to many more successful years to come. As part of the Military Air and Information business, its primary role is in the design, development, manufacture and through-life support of the Hawk advanced jet trainer. The site also houses the company’s structural and dynamic test facility, where specimens of the company’s leading military aircraft are undergoing static, fatigue and environmental testing. Last year, we also committed more than £56,000 to the local community and more than £9,000 was raised by employees for local charities. BAE Systems is delighted to sponsor the Culture Awards at the Hull Daily Mail Business Awards. We believe it is important to give real recognition to achievements and celebrate the innovation, vigour and determination of various businesses within the region.

Working on behalf of clients in banking, utility, telecoms and retail, whose customers have fallen behind with their repayments, Wescot recognises that people are at the heart of everything it does – people who deserve to be respected and treated fairly. The company’s sector-leading personal development arrangements are built on this, too. Wescot developed a bespoke solution for its business – an advanced apprenticeship called Providing Financial Services Level 3, which is equivalent to two A-levels. By investing time in reviewing its needs, Wescot was able to design programmes to national standards, integrating into its pre-existing competency framework and internal training. “As a result, we support achievement and growth of the competence of the people who participate,” said the entry. “So far, with help from Genius People, we have invested £290,000 in our colleagues, and are confident we shall be able to add a further £225,000 to that in 2016-17.” Wescot developed modules specific to the demanding role of supporting customers in financial difficulties; others included verbal, numeric and technology skills. Positive colleague response has encouraged others to take the apprenticeship route. The 2016 Business Awards judges said this was “a very comprehensive entry” from a company that recognised people

‘CELEBRATING SUCCESS’: Exporter of the Year Award, sponsored by ABP, was presented to Anne Duerden, of Wold Top, by Simon Bird, of ABP, alongside Helen Fospero.

‘Award highlights pioneering spirit’

A Top company enjoying significant export success Judges were impressed with ‘unique entry’ from brewing firm going global

J

udges praised the “impressive and unique entry” from Wold Top Brewery at last year’s Business Awards. The business, launched in 2003, scooped the Exporter of the Year title. Wold Top brews award-winning ales from its farm-based operation in the Yorkshire Wolds. From being a regional brewery with a strong local following, Wold Top has replicated that success globally, reporting to last year’s judging panel that exports of bottled and cask beer had accounted for 20 per cent of its turnover in 2014-15. The brewery developed the business into overseas markets to capitalise on the popularity of English-style beers and to benefit from favourable duty and VAT rates. Wold Top had worked hard to forge links with partner companies in Europe and worldwide and was exporting a range of bottled beers to Italy, Sweden, Norway, Finland, The Falkland Islands, Ireland and Canada. It was proud to be the only brewery to be invited by UK Trade & Investment – now the

Department of Trade and Industry – to showcase its beer at a ministerial reception to launch Exporting Is Great Week. Success has not come without its challenges, particularly in terms of meeting demand and shelf life, but Wold Top had addressed the former by investing £600,000 in a new brewing plant that has doubled capacity, and the latter with meticulous production planning. Three members of the Wold Top management team were taking Italian lessons so that they could converse more effectively with customers in their largest export market. Early last year, Wold Top hosted a brewery visit from its distributor’s sales team and helped to train team members in the nuances of English beer. The judging panel enjoyed the story of a local company enjoying “significant” export success. Alex Balchin, of Wold Top, said: “It is always a privilege to win an award and to be recognised as achieving something special. “The business has continued to develop export markets and is now entering early

ABP: The UK ports industry is the largest in Europe and its operations provide critical economic infrastructure for the nation’s manufacturers and businesses. ABP is the UK’s leading port operator, with a unique network of 21 ports across England, Scotland and Wales. Our ports include Immingham, the UK’s busiest port, and Southampton, the nation’s second largest and Europe’s most efficient container port, as well as the UK’s number one for cars and cruises. The Humber ports of Hull, Goole, Grimsby and Immingham support 33,000 jobs and together handle more than 60 million tonnes of cargo each year. ABP’s Humber facilities offer customers close links to markets in mainland Europe and Scandinavia and expertise in a broad range of cargoes, including energy, vehicles, roll-on roll-off, containers, bulks, liquid bulks and forest products. ABP is delighted to sponsor the Exporter of the Year Award once again. This award, we believe, highlights the pioneering spirit and entrepreneurial flair that is so prevalent in this region, be that in commerce, industry or the arts, and demonstrates that the Humber is at the forefront of trade not just in the UK, but within Europe and beyond.

This was recognised by the judges of the 2016 Business Awards, awarding Ability IT the Community Involvement Award. Vicky O’Grady, of Ability IT, said: “We were delighted to be recognised at last year’s awards for the charitable support that we provide to local organisations and we were very proud to receive this accolade. “It gave us the opportunity to highlight our charitable partnerships and introduce our company to many other local businesses. “Since winning the award we have seen an increase in interest from other charities for support and we have continued to grow and develop, introducing all new staff to our charitable ethos to benefit our community.” The company is passionate about helping numerous charity organisations – its director is a trustee of a local charity and is, therefore, knowledgeable about the kind of support required. This could be by: ■ Providing financial support to community projects; ■ Giving practical assistance in terms of time or expertise; ■ Allowing charity organisations,

Ability IT donated and installed an IT solution for local breast cancer charity HER Breast Friends last summer. The company gives discounted rates to charities and additional support, such as marketing assistance and advice, sharing contacts and social media support. Ability IT donates hours of free social media training to local charities and organisations and has implemented a work experience programme to support local young people.

As part of the company strategy to grow and develop, Ability IT supports work placements – a work experience candidate last year was taken on as their new apprentice IT support engineer. Going the extra mile for those in the community is inherent in everything Ability IT does. The judges said this company’s contribution had been financial but, much more than that, it had been giving with its time. “Community is threaded through this company, it is part of its DNA,” they said. ■ This category is sponsored by Arco.

CATEGORY Green Award

‘Winning the award really helped boost our profile’

Success increased company’s standing within the business community

W

inning the Green Award has proved of huge benefit to Pure Renewables. Chris Whitelock, managing director, said: “Winning the award for best green business really helped to increase our profile, both in the city of Hull and also further afield. “The Business Awards are widely respected as THE local business awards and winning this category against what was a wide-ranging scope of business types and sizes was a real boost both to our company morale but, more importantly, to our standing in the business community.” Last year’s judges said Pure Renewables’s entry “ticked all the boxes”, not only by being a strong environmental contender, but also by demonstrating how it was saving money for customers and community organisations. Established in 2007, Pure Renewables is one of the longest-established renewable energy companies in the country. Operating throughout Yorkshire and the Humber, as well as in Lincolnshire and Cumbria, the company works in the domestic and commercial markets and in the new-build and renovation/retrofit sectors. It focuses on installing renewable heating systems that use either air-source or groundsource heat pumps, as well as providing other services. Judges heard Pure Renewables had won a Hull-based contract to upgrade the heating and hot water systems in a care home complex with air-source heat pump systems, allowing the care home to enjoy energy savings as well as impacting favourably on residents’ comfort and welfare. By investing in the company’s renewables, Hull Vineyard Church was also set to benefit from low energy bills – the system being eligible for the Renewable Heat incentive meant the savings could be used to fund projects such as the Vineyard Food Bank.

For this firm, being socially and environmentally responsible goes hand in hand with being successful. ■ This category is sponsored by Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy.

Category Green The Green Award is designed to recognise outstanding performance in environmental awareness, green energy or sustainable activity. The winner of the award will be a company that has: ■ Embraced environmental policies across its business, with an outlook that reflects a

green approach; ■ Successfully developed, sold or created “green” products or services; ■ A workforce or teams that fully embrace environmental awareness and actions; ■ Demonstrated, by its actions, environmental leadership in its business

sector or geographic locality; ■ Made improvements in energy efficiency, carbon reduction or sustainability; ■ Implemented projects that have minimised the firm’s environmental impact, either locally or nationally, of the company’s operations.

Proud sponsors of the Green category in the Hull Daily Mail Business Awards

SIEMENS GAMESA: As a leader of the Humber’s renewables revolution, there could not be a more appropriate sponsor for the Green Award than Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy. Siemens Wind Power and Gamesa have come together to create a new leader in the renewable energy industry, to provide cleaner, more reliable and more affordable energy to society, and to create lasting value for all stakeholders. The united company combines the business success and strengths of both companies. The increased scale of the combined company creates unprecedented opportunities for growth, positioning Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy as a leading player in the wind power market. The company’s wind power products and technologies are being used in more than 90 countries, across five continents, onshore and offshore. Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy is delivering on the huge investment to transform Hull’s Alexandra Dock into a site housing world-class and world-scale offshore wind manufacturing, assembly, storage, load-out and servicing facilities. The blade factory and associated facilities are now fully operational, with recruitment due to be completed by the summer. In total, just over 1,000 jobs will be created directly and with suppliers on site. The development places Hull and the Humber at the forefront of the UK’s transition to a sustainable, low-carbon economy.

This is being achieved by continuous development behind the scenes to ensure that its environment, resources and staff benefit – a win-win situation for all concerned.

Category Small Business of the Year The Small Business Of The Year award is open to companies with fewer than 25 employees. SERVING THE UK: Last year’s Business of the Year award, Medium, sponsored by HSBC Commercial Banking and presented by Neil Waterhouse went to Hird’s, who received the award on stage with Helen Fospero.

Philip showed how you can transform a business with vision and support Award winners turned their fortunes around with ‘tenacity and resilience’

P

eter Hird & Sons has been a local family business for more than 30 years, serving Hull and the surrounding area. Set up in 1983, the business had grown steadily year on year but had run out of steam by 2005 and, in 2008, the company hit very hard times, being placed into special measures with banks and lenders. However, in 2009, Philip Hird, the current managing director, took control of the business and, with vision and support, he began to build a company that now serves the whole of the UK and occasionally Europe and beyond. From focusing on the hire of mobile and mini-cranes, platforms, machinery removals and installations, in 2010, the firm set out to achieve more, opening a new hire facility in Doncaster to serve the local area with access platforms and scissor lifts, while creating six

jobs. Also in 2010, came an opportunity for the company to work on the now world-renowned Shard building in London, and it also opened another dedicated hire facility in Surrey. In 2013, Hird’s was hit by flooding, losing everything at its Hull site, which had to be relocated into temporary container offices, where it is still based today. It has now increased the amount of hire equipment and services offered and its training facilities are able to conduct almost 200 individual training courses. Hird’s has invested heavily in staff, having more than 85 employees across its depots. The judging panel said this was a tough decision in an impressive category but that Hird’s had displayed “tenacity and resilience” in turning its fortunes around. ■ This category is sponsored by HSBC Commercial Banking.

Category Medium Business of the Year The Medium Business Of The Year Award is open to companies with between 25 and 149 employees. HSBC: We are delighted to be sponsoring the Medium Business of the Year Award at this year’s Hull Business Awards. It is important we recognise the growing business presence within the Humber region, home to a range of growing sectors, which has resulted in significant opportunities for local businesses. With HSBC’s expertise in both UK and international trade, we are perfectly placed to help those businesses prosper and realise their growth ambitions. We will do this by increasing our support to help local businesses in the region invest and grow. As part of this, we will remain committed to supporting new and existing customers by ensuring they take advantage of the right opportunities, allowing the local economy to prosper. This support is becoming increasingly important for mid-sized businesses, who are powering the UK much more than previously realised, contributing more than twice as much to the economy as the entire financial services industry and more than any region outside London. HSBC has had a significant presence in the Humber region for many decades, and its area office in Hessle boasts a 20-strong team offering the full range of corporate banking services to businesses, from start-ups to those with £350m tur nover. We recently announced an exciting package of support for businesses in the region, highlighted by a £200m dedicated lending fund.

success. The East Yorkshire-based company has been building high-quality homes for almost 50 years and has delivered more than 65 developments across Hull, East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire. In naming Beal as the winner, the judges said the business was “a continuing success story” and “a family-run company that is on course for even more growth”. The Hull Daily Mail award came during a year in which the business recorded its eighth successive year of rising house completions, revenues and profits. Beal’s entry highlighted that the company had grown strongly while delivering exceptional levels of quality and choice as well as customer service and satisfaction. Key to Beal’s continuing success is its guarantee that every customer will receive a unique and personal buying experience reflecting the company’s vision “to create exceptional homes as individual as our customers”. The award entry also focused on the quality of Beal’s workforce of almost 200 employees, including 150 skilled craftsmen, and the company’s commitment to staff training and development. Richard Beal, chairman and managing director of Beal Homes, said: “We were absolutely delighted and honoured to receive this accolade in what are the leading business awards in the Hull area. “The award was especially pleasing when we know how many excellent businesses there are in the Hull area and because it came at a time of so much investment and opportunity in the local economy. “The award is a tribute to the excellence of our staff and the fantastic support of our customers who choose Beal homes, in some cases time after time.” ■ The Large Business of the Year is sponsored by Gosschalks Solicitors.

Adam, who has been a previous participant of the For Entrepreneurs Only (FEO) mentoring programme, said: “I would urge others to get involved with the Mail’s Business Awards. “I had been looking at news on the Mail’s website, and saw details of the awards, so decided to enter. “We had not expected to be shortlisted, let alone win, so it was a really great feeling.” Speaking of their decision, the award judges said: “What really appealed to us was that this was a genuine start-up, working up from literally nothing to a thriving monthly turnover and an impressive client list.”

HORNCASTLE GROUP: We find ourselves in exciting times with lots going on in Hull and the East Riding. There is much that can be seen – the big – the obvious, but what is more exciting is the not so obvious. Those people in the region taking the plunge starting their own business. This is to be applauded and is most welcome. Such activity will feed through to growth, jobs and greater local wealth creation. It is interesting to note that more than 80 per cent of businesses in the area are classed as microbusinesses, employing fewer than ten people. Smaller businesses are a real engine to our local economy and do so much. Business start-ups are very important to the future of our region. Horncastle Group Plc is delighted to help highlight this, our chairman Andrew Horncastle is a founder member of For Entrepreneurs Only, and as a local company we are very proud to support the Hull Daily Mail Start-up Business of the Year.

UP FOR A CHALLENGE: Heather Midwinter, centre, receives the Young Achiever of the Year Award, sponsored by Bishop Burton College, from Andy Black alongside Helen Fospero.

Heather showed how hard work really does pay off Young achiever proved you can ‘take different routes to get to different places’

J

udges of last year’s Business Awards praised Heather Midwinter for her “energy and tenacity”, awarding her the Young Achiever of the Year title. Heather has been proving she is up for a challenge since she left school at 15 and acquired an apprenticeship in business administration with a law firm in the North West. Heather completed her NVQ in half the time allocated, moved on to the advanced qualification and was promoted to work alongside the senior partner of the firm within five months of starting her office junior role.

Her employers paid for a four-year course that would help Heather qualify as a legal executive. Marriage brought her to Hull and Heather, then aged 20, worked with a small to medium-sized law firm in the city. Her new employers continued to offer financial support and time off to study for her legal executive qualification. At her graduation, it was noted that Heather was one of, if not the youngest, to qualify at that time. Running and acquiring her own case load, Heather started to generate substantial fee income for the firm and her bosses

Category Young Achiever of the Year The Young Achiever Of The Year Award is aimed at recognising the talents of individuals aged from 18 to 30. Nominations should look to highlight young people who

have made a real impact in their field of business, ranging from office work to the arts. The winner’s attributes will include: ■ Ability to enthuse and motivate those around them;

■ Demonstrating successful growth both on a personal level and on a business level; ■ Showing creativity and courage in achieving their goals.

encouraged her to go on and qualify as a solicitor, which she did over a number of years and with distinction. In 2013, the directors invited Heather to form a new law firm in Hull, enabling her to become a director and shareholder. Duncan Rann Associates Ltd officially launched in September 2013 with a team of five and has since doubled in size. Heather said she had achieved all she set out to by the time she was 30 – becoming qualified, being a director and having an interest in her own business. The judges said Heather’s success was down to working really hard and she had shown that “there are different routes to get to different places”. Following on from obtaining the award Heather has searched for other opportunities (beyond law) to be able to continue to develop her knowledge, experience and appreciation of how other industries operate. Looking to the future, Heather would like to use what she has learnt, experienced and studied to date to assist and support the progression of other businesses. ■ This category is sponsored by Swift Group.

SWIFT GROUP: The UK’s premier leisure vehicle manufacturer said it is thrilled to sponsor the Young Achiever Of The Year Award. In addition, it also operates a fully funded engineering scholarship programme for ambitious, enthusiastic engineers who wish to continue their education to degree level, while in employment, gaining real work experience within a dynamic engineering department. Employing more than 1,100 people, Swift Group manufactures at three sites across Cottingham, below, Hedon Road in Hull, and Mexborough. A new £8m purpose-built modern manufacturing facility is soon to be completed at its headquarters in Cottingham. Accolade helped put fine dining on the Hull menu Winners 1884 Dock Street adding to city’s growing reputation for eating out

t had already been lining up the awards nicely, taking accolades for its food and hospitality across Yorkshire and nationally. Fresh from winning the restaurant prize in the Remarkable East Yorkshire Tourism Awards, 1884 Dock Street Kitchen added to its trophy tally with the Tourism and Hospitality Award at the 2016 Hull Daily Mail Business Awards. “Hull matters to us,” said the restaurant’s nomination. “It’s where we’re from and it’s where we want to make a difference, providing a fine-dining experience for our local clientele on their doorstep, rather than in rural East Yorkshire, welcoming the world when they arrive in Hull during 2017 and beyond and showing them that our city is way more than it’s cracked up to be.” It is why those national awards and reviews have been so important, because they have put 1884 Dock Street Kitchen on the map and they are helping Hull to build a reputation as a destination full of pleasant surprises. 1884 Dock Street Kitchen’s aim from the outset was to be the best restaurant it could, and to keep improving. Since opening in 2012, it has become the only restaurant in the region to repeatedly tempt the tastebuds of national food writers, critics from The Telegraph, The Independent and The Guardian being among them. James Birch, general manager, and Laura Waller, head chef, lead a team of about 30 people who are all from the local area. ‘Recognition was a fitting reward for our hard work’ Entrepreneurial chief executive urges businesses to enter this year’s awards

J

udges of the Mail’s Business Awards last year recognised the knowledge and experience of entrepreneurial chief executive Gary Gallen in honouring rradar with the Best Support Service Award. In providing SMEs with resources that showed them how to avoid problems before they manifested themselves, rradar was positioned to provide “extremely good support”, they said. Mr Gallen said: “Rradar was delighted and very proud to win the award for Best Support Service 2016. “Everyone in the company has worked incredibly hard to ensure our success and the award is a fitting tribute to those efforts. “We aim to cement the recognition that the award has brought us with new and exciting initiatives in 2017 and would recommend any up and coming company to put themselves forward for this year’s awards.” The award-winning nomination from rradar said that when SMEs needed access to legal advice, they traditionally turned to lawyers when trouble had already begun – perhaps after someone had been injured in an accident, or when someone was making a claim against a former employer over dismissal. “What if a business could work with lawyers, getting access to their expertise, experience and knowledge, helping to identify problems before they arise and avoid ever having to go to court?” the nomination said. “Legal fees would no longer be an expense but an investment – an entrance to a world of training and risk-management coaching.” The market had been long overdue for upheaval and this is where rradar came in.

Mr Gallen, whose business is based in Waterside Business Park, Livingstone Road, Hessle, had placed power back where it belongs – in the hands of the clients themselves, providing a service that had been described as unique in the marketplace. The company wanted the emphasis and the entry point to shift from late-stage fire-fighting to early education, knowledge sharing and continuous, pro-active development. Rradar’s approach to customer service was described as “amazingly successful”, both for itself and for its partner organisations. Its provision of first-rate customer service, advice, guidance and online educational opportunities had meant it had become the legal service provider of choice for an increasing number of SMEs. ■ This category is sponsored by KRL.

here are many figures in the local business world who have made a positive impact on the Hull and East Yorkshire region. That tends to make for a difficult process for the judges of the Mail’s Business Awards when it comes to choosing a winner of the annual Lifetime Contribution Award. However, the panel had no hesitation in selecting last year’s worthy recipient, Charlie Spencer OBE, executive chairman of Hull-based Spencer Group. The award recognised Mr Spencer’s achievement in turning the company he founded 28 years ago into a multi award-winning business turning over more than £100m; conquering extraordinary engineering challenges; and enjoying an excellent reputation among clients and the wider community. Spencer Group has delivered a series of landmark schemes and major infrastructure projects and is currently part of the construction team for the £200m Energy Works green power plant in Hull, a project Mr Spencer led from its conception in 2010 into its delivery phase. Under his leadership, Spencer Group has been noted for its support for many local good causes and, as passionate believer in entrepreneurship, Mr Spencer has supported programmes and projects to help budding business owners and fledgling companies to succeed. I see it as a tribute to the great work of people across the business – we’ve got a brilliant team and it’s a pleasure to work with them. “Although we work all over the country and sometimes abroad, we see ourselves as a local company and we’re proud to be part of the local business community. “The Business Awards play such an important role. They recognise and reward the achievements and contributions of local businesses, including the many successful entrepreneurial companies in the region.” Mr Spencer received the Lifetime Contribution Award from Gary Young, executive vice-president of sponsor KCOM.

In a memorable acceptance speech, Mr Spencer thanked his wife, Noreen, who started the business with him from the front room of their then home in Anlaby in 1989, adding: “She has been with me through thick and thin ever since and has been an absolute rock.” He also spoke of his pride at being part of the local business community, which did so much to contribute to the development of the city and region. “When I look around the business community I see a number of people in business giving their time and money just to make Hull the place it is,” he said. “That really is amazing. “Hull has some great institutions, including the Hull Daily Mail, which plays a really important role in knitting that community together through events like this. WORLD-CLASS R&D CENTRE LAUNCHES Smith and Nephew opens its research and development base in city By Catherine Lea Business Reporter c.lea@hulldailymail.co.uk

SMITH and Nephew has reaffirmed its commitment to Hull with the official opening of its new world-class research and development (R&D) centre. The global medical technology business has invested £8m in the R&D centre as part of a £50m investment in its site in Hessle Road. The facility will be one of the most capable and well-equipped centres in Europe for medical device R&D, specialising in toxicology, chemistry and microbiology, among other specialist fields. Employees are already working in the new centre, which, once fully operational, will house about 100 staff. Tanya Childs, corporate brand director for Smith and Nephew, said: “This facility could have been built anywhere in the world, however a lot of the R&D that will take place in the centre relates to wound management, and Hull is where the roots for Smith and Nephew’s wound management business are laid. “Hull is still the global headquarters for Smith and Nephew’s Advanced Wound Management business and, on top of this, we have a fantastic pool of

Rise of the traditional independents RETAIL:Traditional independent retailers opened more shops than were closed across our region last year. New figures from the Local Data Company (LDC) and the British Independent Retailers Association (bira) found the number of new independent shop openings last year was up 36 per cent on 2015. The findings come in the wake of a previous LDC survey which found there were more chain stores leaving the region’s high streets last year than moving onto them, with 27 “multiple” shops closing in Hull alone between January and December, reducing the number of chains from 296 to 290. Matthew Hopkinson, pictured, LDC director, said: “Independents are becoming ever more important to our high streets. Year by year, the net gain of small businesses is accelerating, even as the net loss of chain stores increases. “They are changing the face of our towns, as barbers and bars replace clothing shops and newsagents, with service and leisure gradually substituting for comparison shops. “The high levels of openings and closures among independents must be seen as a sign of continued buoyancy, but there is no room for complacency– it would take very little for net gains to become net losses.”

Battle-ready for launch Nutrition bar company is expanding its range with new cookie By Catherine Lea Business Reporter c.lea@hulldailymail.co.uk

TURN IN HERE

A RAPIDLY growing Hull nutrition brand is next week launching a new protein cookie product to complement its “free from” range of high-protein oat bars. Battle Oats in Strickland Street was founded by Hessle entrepreneurs Kevin Smith and Shaun Gibbins in 2014. A spin-off to their existing company, Icon Nutrition, the business now has distribution in Ireland, the Netherlands and Kuwait, and exports to more than ten countries. On Wednesday, Battle Oats is unveiling what it believes to be the only protein cookie on the market which uses plant-based protein and is both vegan and gluten-free. Kevin Smith said: “We believe that our product could be the world’s healthiest cookie. “Generally, people love cookies and when they see that ours are non-GMO and high in protein and fibre, then their ‘treat’ actually becomes part of a healthy lifestyle. “We have built our brand with the aim of providing healthy, high-protein snacks, designed for active people on-the-go, but which are also satisfying and taste good. “All of our products are wholesome and are oven baked by a small British bakery, to strict gluten free guidelines.” Over the past two years, Battle Oats has grown sales by more than 100 per cent per annum, shipping more than one million bars last year. The firm employs nine people directly, as well as supporting

Initially launching with two flavours – chocolate chip and double chocolate – each cookie contains 10g of protein and 8g of fibre. As of next week, the cookies will be available online and through selected wholesalers and distributors. Earlier this year, the company secured a deal with Holland and Barrett to supply its protein bar products to 300 of the retailer’s UK stores. The listing with Holland and Barrett is expected to be extended to Battle Oats’ protein cookies later in the year. The company is now planning to add three additional flavours to its protein cookie range over the next six months.

Co-founder Shaun Gibbins adds: “It’s estimated that there are now half a million vegans in the UK and over a million vegetarians. “There is a growing demand for a wider range of suitable products as people choose plant-based proteins, which are not only healthier, but are also more sustainable than milkbased protein.” Battle Oats cookies use pea protein – a selling point Mr Gibbins says is again unique to the Hull brand. “Our cookies use pea protein, which is more environmentally-friendly to produce and also gives a softer texture to the cookie, which our research has shown consumers prefer to the whey protein-based products

Picture: Richard Addison currently on the market.” Mr Smith said: “The current ‘clean eating’ trend has seen this type of nutritious snacking becoming more mainstream with many consumers now looking for a grab ’n’ go healthy protein snack. “Our cookies can be seen as a healthy indulgence and we expect their appeal will reach far beyond exercise enthusiasts needing to repair muscles and quickly replenish energy. “Consequently, we’re keen to talk to new retailer partners throughout the UK, whether supermarket chains, convenience stores or garage forecourts, who want to extend their range of gluten-free, high-protein products.”

Smith and Nephew opens world-class research centre in Hull Continued from PAGE 1 talent locally. “We have strong academic links with both Hull and York medical school and Hull and York universities. “Basing the new R&D centre here ensures we can future proof the business, by making sure we can attract and retain the best talent.” Founded in Hull more than 160 years ago by Thomas James Smith, Smith and Nephew has grown from a Whitefriargate pharmacy to a global supplier of advanced medical devices, with nearly 16,000 employees – almost 1,000 of whom are still based in the city. During the First World War, it specialised in the supply of field dressings. Now, it manufactures pioneering products used by healthcare professionals in more than 100 countries.

Many of the jobs in the new R&D centre will be populated by existing staff, including some transferred from the medical company’s former R&D facility in York, however a number of new jobs have already been created, with more expected in the pipeline as the facility develops. Tanya said: “Altogether there will be just over 100 jobs, however over time we expect natural attrition that will open up new opportunities.” The new centre will be officially opened on Friday by parliamentarian Alan Johnson. Its opening follows a major investment in Hull by Smith and Nephew over the past few years, which has included about £17m on flood repair defence works, £25m adding high-tech processes onto the site and about £5m upgrading and building new production and operations facilities.

Tanya said: “We are working hard to ensure everybody, both inside and outside of the business, is clear we are committed to the future of the Hull site, and are committed to making sure it is the best place to attract and retain the best talent.” As well as reinforcing the company’s commitment to the city, Tanya said the major investment was also linked to its major partnership with Hull 2017 UK City of Culture. Tanya said: “We will be linking the centre’s opening with some of the business’s cultural activities. “Part of is this will be to preview The Hessle Roaders: Hull’s Fishing Community, a major photographic exhibition which Smith and Nephew is proud to be sponsoring. “We have been based at 101 Hessle Road since 1907, and many of our past and present

workforce live in this area. It ties our past to our strong commitment to investment in the future of this site.” The exhibition, by Dr Alec Gill MBE and Paul Berriff OBE, features 100 photographs documenting a close-knit community during a time of dramatic social change. It will be on display at Hull History Centre throughout June. Olivier Bohuon, CEO of Smith and Nephew, said: “The city of Hull holds a special place in the history of Smith and Nephew. Supporting the Hull UK City of Culture 2017 is a significant opportunity to reinforce our close links with the community that founded our global company, to contribute to a lasting legacy that will raise the profile of this region, and to engage our own employees in a year of exciting and meaningful events.”

Making headlines for their beer Change of career for brewing duo By Catherine Lea Business Reporter c.lea@hulldailymail.co.uk

A PRODUCTION journalist and a music producer have left their former careers behind them and channelled their creativity into an altogether different venture. Aire Heads Brewery is already brewing up a storm, with its first ales – a pale, hoppy beer called Rude, Crude and Brewed, and a chocolate stout with liquorice called Beyond a Shadow of a Stout – now being delivered to local pubs including Yorkshire Ales in Snaith and the Jemmy Hirst at the Rose and Crown, in Rawcliffe. Founders Ben Pindar and Craig Sanderson have invested more than £30,000 into the manufacturing business, with the brewery also securing funding support from Goole Development Trust and a number of other investors. Ben, who has worked as a journalist and PR director in the region for more than 20 years, said the new business was inspired

He said: “Much of my career was spent meeting and working with some incredible Yorkshire entrepreneurs. “I’ve always been amazed by what this region creates and achieves and we don’t hear enough about it. The passion of these business people was infectious and it has

inspired us to start our own business.” The dynamic duo are now in the process of creating a range of “exciting, challenging and unique beers” while building a brand that will help to strengthen the region’s reputation for making world-class food and drink. Ben said: “We have big growth

ambitions and are aiming to create jobs, grow our production quickly and seek out new markets around the UK and overseas. “We’re also keen to work with local suppliers and other Yorkshire breweries to help push this region even further ahead. “We’ve had some fantastic feedback to the beers already produced,

and are really looking forward to getting our beers out there.” From simple session bitters to big Russian stouts, the two businessmen are in the process of developing a range of new concept ales. Some of these will take inspiration from the microbrewery’s own allotment, where a range of ingredients, from chilli to hops, are currently being grown organically. Aire Heads is also planning to work with local branches of the Campaign for Real Ale to provide ales for regional beer festivals, as well as catering for private events and business functions, allowing individual customers to design their own beers. Craig, who has worked around the world as a music producer, said: “Ben and I have a passion for real ale and for creating unique recipes that will challenge people’s perceptions of craft beer. We have big ideas but are also determined to give something back to our customers, local businesses and the region as a whole. “We want this to be something everyone can be proud of and create beers that will transform perceptions. We already have a mantra in the brewery – beer won’t change the world, but it will make it a better place.”

Hull’s leading specialist Corporate Finance team celebrates record year with free appointments for local businesses

S

mailes Goldie’s Corporate Finance team, responsible for deals worth a total of £132m last year, is offering businesses the opportunity to make a free no-obligation appointment at its drop-in day. The group’s Corporate Finance department is inviting business owners to book a confidential, one-hour appointment with one of its specialists on Thursday, May 25, with time-slots available from 9am to 8pm. The department is making the offer following a highly successful 2016, which saw the firm complete 21 deals, with an average value of £6.2m. Jeremy Allison, the Smailes Goldie Group Partner who heads up the team, attributes its success to a number of factors including the economic revival in the area; the availability of funding for transactions and the number of business owners born in the baby boom years now looking to exit.

He said: “Strong professional relationships are also key to securing the best outcomes for our clients. As a Hull-based Corporate Finance department, we have long-standing relationships with other professionals locally, such as solicitors and bankers, who are likely to have an input in the deals we handle.” The other key ingredient in the department’s success, according to Jeremy, is the quality of the team of professionals the firm has trained and developed in this very specialised area. “The expertise we have in our Corporate Finance department can make a real difference to businesses, whether they are start-ups or long-established companies,” he said. Along with Ian Lamb, the firm’s Managing Partner, Jeremy, has built a team of talented Corporate Finance specialists, who assist clients at key stages of their businesses’ development.

INVITE: Corporate Finance Team, from left, Alex Berridge, Mike Stocks, Jeremy Allison, Oliver Wilkes and Ian Lamb. Jeremy and Ian bring a wealth of expertise to the department, having both held the prestigious Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales’ (ICAEW) Corporate Finance qualification for more than a decade. Both partners are experienced in complex tax planning issues for all types of businesses. Together they have also developed a high level of expertise in corporate acquisitions, disposals and reconstructions. Supporting Jeremy and Ian are Mike Stocks, Oliver Wilkes and Alex Berridge. Mike is an Associate of the firm and joined the department in 2013 after qualifying within Smailes Goldie. Oliver joined the firm in 2013, having completed a three and a half year training contract with a Big Four audit firm in Hull. Alex moved into the department in 2016 after

qualifying in the firm’s audit and assurance department. Together, the team specialise in all aspects of Corporate Finance including acquisitions; disposals; management buy out’s; buy in’s; as well as due diligence and corporate restructuring. Whilst the largest single transaction completed in 2016 was in the logistics sector, the team work across a diverse range of industries from engineering to tech start-ups; manufacturing to retail and motor to healthcare. Jeremy said: “There is unlikely to be any SME sector we have not worked in over the years. “The work of every member of our Corporate Finance team is ultimately about making sure a business’s financial performance is geared towards realising the plans of the owners. “This means we can play a key

role in everything from helping business owners to grow their business, through to planning for retirement or succession, as well as handling sales, mergers and acquisitions. “Our work is very diverse and we can make a valuable contribution to most businesses. Our clients are often surprised how much we are able to achieve for them and their businesses. We can often make the biggest difference for businesses and their owners when we are involved from an early stage. “Our specialists can make a valuable contribution, even when the need for our involvement might not seem to be immediately urgent or obvious.” ■ Appointments at the drop-in day on May 25 are limited. Call Oliver Wilkes on 01482 326916 or email oliverwilkes@smailesgoldie.co.uk to secure your place.

New dredger to safeguard port’s jobs and future Preventing harbour from silting up a smart move IT PROVIDES jobs for hundreds of people, from skippers and processors to restaurant owners and exporters. Established in 1837 as a Trust Port, Bridlington Harbour is today home to England’s biggest shellfish port and Europe’s leading lobster landing site. With a multi-million-pound export market supplying crabs and lobsters locally, as well as to restaurants and hotels in France, Spain and Italy, the harbour forms an important part of East Yorkshire’s economy. But without constant dredging, the harbour would silt up, preventing vessels from using the port and effecting the livelihoods of hundreds of people. Bridlington Harbour Commissioners – the organisation responsible for the harbour’s upkeep and safety – have now completed the purchase of a new dredger, Gypsey Race, in a move designed to safeguard hundreds of jobs. Chris Wright, chairman of Bridlington Harbour Commissioners, said: “The dredger we previously owned was beyond economic repair and so was taken out of service three years ago. The port in Bridlington does continually silt up so since then we’ve hired in a dredger at huge cost.” The harbour provides direct employment for about 350 people, from shell fishermen and processors to restaurant owners and exporters, not forgetting the people who make and service equipment, such as boats and lobster pots.

By Catherine Lea Business Reporter c.lea@hulldailymail.co.uk

As all shellfish is caught locally, by local fishermen using equipment made and repaired in Bridlington, before being packaged and exported by East Yorkshire firms, the industry provides a massive boost to the town’s economy. Funding for the new vessel was secured from Barclays. Wright said: “The funding from Barclays has not only allowed us to purchase the new vessel but it will also save money and secure the future of the harbour for years to come.” Kelvin Smith, relationship director for Barclays Business Banking, put together the funding package for the deal. He said: “Bridlington Harbour Commissioners do a fantastic job looking after the harbour facilities and keeping the harbour open and safe for the local fishermen. “I was delighted that we were able to provide a tailored facility for them, enabling them to complete the purchase of the dredger with stage payments and working to a timetable to suit their financial needs. “They are long-standing customers of Barclays and it’s a testament to their professional operation that we’re able to support them with funding for this crucial harbour operation.”

BIGINTERVIEW

‘We had some great times and I wouldn’t change a thing’

MOVING ON: Neil and Moira Haylock at the Spar shop on Victoria Dock. Pictures: Richard Addison

Neil Haylock speaks to Catherine Lea about hanging up his hat after 26 years in retail

W

hen Neil Haylock and his wife, Moira, first opened a convenience shop in Victoria Dock, customers paid with cash. That was 26 years ago and much has now changed. Today, plastic is king, with the majority of people opting for card transactions over notes and coins Mr Haylock said: “Everybody used to pay cash, but now about 60 per cent of customers use cards. Shopping habits have changed a lot, too. “People tend to buy ready meals now. They have less time and do not want to be cooking from scratch, so will instead buy things they can put in their oven in a box.” This week, Neil and Moira pulled down the shutters on the estate’s Spar shop for the last time, marking the end of an era for the Victoria Dock community. Neil said: “A lot of our regulars knew we were closing the shop, but I think people will really miss it now it has gone. “I will certainly miss it. There are some aspects I won’t miss quite so much. Shoplifters and broken-down fridges were never enjoyable, but, on the whole, we have had some great times and I would not change a thing.” While many shops claim the surge in internet shopping has hammered away at their bottom line, Neil said online retail has actually boosted the business. He said: “We ran a click and collect service, where people would buy things online from the likes of John Lewis and then come and collect them from us. “Every day a van would arrive and bring a load of parcels, at the same time collecting all the parcels customers had dropped off. Nowadays, a lot of people are at work during the day and cannot stay home waiting for parcels. “We noticed a dip in trade with the opening of the nearby Asda supermarket, then there was the 24-hour Tesco in St Stephens. But it was the arrival of the likes of Aldi and Lidl that has really made a difference, so we found the click and collect service was really good for us as a business as it gave us another string to our bow.” As with many things in life, Mr Haylock had never planned to open a shop. The former engineer from British Aerospace and his family had moved to a house in Victoria Dock while the development was still in its first phase. Having clocked what he thought were shops being

END OF AN ERA: Neil and Moira Haylock have run shops for 26 years. built, he asked when they would be opening. “It turned out those particular buildings were actually going to be apartments, but I was told the developers did want to open a shop, they just needed someone to run it. “That’s how it all started. “We started out in a portable building and the plan was to be in there for 18 months, but that turned into six years until we moved into the purpose-built shop.” The Haylocks also took over the Spar shop in Hutton Cranswick, with daughters Joanne and Victoria and Mr Haylock’s late mother, Mary, all chipping in to help. “My family have had to make a lot of sacrifices for what was essentially my dream,” said Mr Haylock. “My wife gave up her job, my eldest daughter, Joanna, had been working in New York and came back to work in the business, and my youngest daughter, Victoria, got a degree in law and was all set to be a lawyer. “I could not have done it without them and I am very thankful.” Though Mr Haylock had no prior exper-

ience of retail, he had long harboured a dream of running his own sweet shop. He said: “That was more to do with being able to help myself to sweets. “But I never once thought that opening a small shop in Victoria Dock would lead to having two Spar shops in the region. “I also quite fancied a career in politics. I ended up being a union convenor at British Aerospace, so I could say that’s been ticked off the list, too.” While Mr Haylock reckons most of his friends thought he had “retired years ago”, this week he and Moira have finally taken the plunge, with plans to travel and “do all the things we have never had the chance to do before”. But most importantly perhaps, did he manage to pilfer those sweets he dreamt about in his childhood? “Funnily enough, one of the first things I did when we moved into the portable building was line up the jars of sweets and take the first out of each jar,” he said. “I ended up feeling quite sick. I don’t think I could eat another one now if I tried.”

JOINERY CONTRACTOR BUILDING ON SUCCESS Firm expands senior team as demand for its services at all-time high By Catherine Lea Business Editor c.lea@hulldailymail.co.uk

RENEWABLES: Green Port Hull has created a new guide for people interested in careers in the offshore wind industry. Job Roles In Offshore Wind provides insight into the job types and requirements in the industry for professionals, careers advisers and school-leavers. The guide also gives an overview of UK wind farms and what steps people need to take to start a career in the sector. Tim Rix, chairman of the Green Port Growth Programme, said: “The primary focus of Green Port Hull is to help businesses access supply chain opportunities and win more work. “However, with this comes a wide variety of career opportunities, some of which are not clear or wellpublicised. “For example, roles include marine mammal observers, cable jointers, unexploded ordnance divers and rope access and blade repair technicians – some of which many have never heard of. “Whether you’re seeking employment yourself, or advising others on career opportunities, we hope our new guide will give you insight into the vast range of roles that are available and offer advice on how to access them.” The publication has been researched and developed by renewable energy consultants BVG Associates. Clare Davies, of BVG, said: “Often, people only think of opportunities offered by the main tier one contractors delivering large-scale manufacturing and assembly of large components, but the offshore wind industry offers an incredible diversity in the type of job roles across the entire supply chain.” ■ For more details, visit www.greenporthull.co.uk

A MELTON-based joinery contractor has expanded its senior team as it looks to build on a “hugely successful” first four months of 2017. Kingston Joinery has secured a string of prestigious contracts in recent months, with overall headcount now increasing to 60. Managing director Craig O’Leary, who founded the firm less than a decade ago in his bedroom, says demand for the company’s services are at an all-time high. As a result, it has recruited new site managers, estimators and design technicians, alongside a new business development manager. “It has been a really strong first four months of 2017, with a number of significant contracts secured. We are also being invited to tender for some very big contracts later in the year,” said Mr O’Leary. “This strong first quarter of 2017 has been built on two years of steady growth in 2015 and 2016, in which the reputation of our business has expanded across the UK. “There has been a nice mix of repeat business for contractors we have supplied before, alongside new customers who have heard of our success and growth in recent years and given us our chance to impress. “We’ve now expanded our team to reflect that growth and demand, and there is a really positive outlook at present.” The commercial joinery provider has worked for clients including Interserve, Morgan Sindall, Balfour Beatty, Galliard and Wates. Work recently competed included a £240,000 contract for a full joinery fit-out with construction firm Walter Thompson’s at the 73-bed Clare-

Joinery contractor builds on success Continued from PAGE 1 a £32m student accommodation complex. The foundry closed in 1972 but the ongoing multi-million-pound project will see the site converted into a 437-bedroom new build. Kingston Joinery was selected by Create Construction, with its aspect of the work worth more than £300,000 as it completes the internal joinery fit-out on three residential blocks. With that project scheduled to be ready for the 2017-18 academic year, Kingston’s teams are also currently working on another full joinery fit-out contract for a £9m 70-bed care home development for Tyneside-based Tolent Construction. The £320,000 contract follows previous work for Tolent in 2016 in which Kingston’s teams provided a full joinery package for the new Hilton Garden Inn in Sunderland. A new contract has now been secured with Stonebridge Homes to provide and install casement windows on its Clifton Road development in Ilkley. Kingston Joinery is also working for Hull-based Geo Houlton and Sons on the refurbishment of the Boddington Sports Pavilion at the University of Leeds, where it will provide a full joinery refurbishment and external timber cladding, while closer to home the firm has been awarded further work on the University of Hull’s ongoing £25m, five-storey Allam Medical Building development. Mr O’Leary said: “We are seeing a theme of repeat business from customers after we’ve worked for them for the first time, and that is really pleasing given the competitive nature of this industry. “Equally, over the past 12 months in particular, we have seen an increasing amount of work come from new clients, who have seen our track record of delivering on high-spec contracts, and have had the confidence in us. “It is why we have expanded our team.”

Shower maker’s success after business park move Firm’s award-winning product achieves a 55 per cent sales growth By Catherine Lea Business Reporter c.lea@hulldailymail.co.uk

AN EAST Yorkshire business park has provided the perfect platform for growth for a leading UK shower manufacturer. Kohler Mira relocated to the Meltonwest Business Park in 2012 after outgrowing its former home in National Avenue, Hull. The move provided the company with space for future expansion, with the state-ofthe-art facility housing the latest automation technologies. Kohler Mira is now celebrating after its innovative anti-slip shower tray – designed and manufactured at the Meltonwest facility – achieved a 55 per cent sales growth, while also earning the company a coveted Queens Award for Innovation. Simon Browning, lead industrial designer at Mira Showers, said: “I have worked at Mira Showers for six-and-a-half years and, in that time, I have experienced so much opportunity for design, improvement and innovation here. “When we design products, we are always striving to deliver market-leading design and user experience. “Recently we launched our latest product in digital innovation, the Mira Mode, which won the coveted Red Dot Award Product Design Award – a great moment for the team.” Mira is owned by US bathroom manufacturer Kohler Co and its shower products can be

found in one in four UK homes. The Meltonwest facility, which now employs about 90 people, manufactures shower trays and baths. The Mira Flight tray range was borne out of the company’s dedication to product design and innovation. Previously, non-slip shower trays were made by manually applying a coating, however the coating was liable to wear away

and only covers a portion of the surface, with the rough texture of the coating attracting dirt. Mira developed a process that allowed it to integrate the anti-slip surface without distortion during manufacturing, achieving a “superior level of slip protection”, together with an easy-to-clean surface with antimicrobial properties. In 2014, the factory celebrated the production of its millionth Mira Flight Tray. Speaking about the Queen’s Award, Liz Hazeldene, managing director at Kohler Mira, said: “We are truly honoured to have won this prestigious accolade; it was a great collaborative team effort

from the Mira Showers team. “We strongly felt that the market’s traditional anti-slip tray wasn’t up to scratch and so we were determined to design a better solution for our customers. “Over the last two years sales of our anti-slip tray have grown by 55 per cent demonstrating the customer need and the commercial success of this product.” Meltonwest was developed by Hull-based property company Wykeland Group and has attracted a number of successful firms from Hull, including Heron Foods and House Of Townend. Ben Medhurst, of PPH Commercial, acted for Kohler Mira during the move, which safeguarded 80 jobs locally.

Negotiating free trade agreements – a tough task ahead Advertisement Feature

hichever party wins next month’s general election, they will have to face up to the pending Brexit negotiations. A vision for a “Global Britain” had been set out by the Tory Government, in the Brexit White Paper published on February 2, in which Britain enjoys unrestricted and tariff-free access to the major economies of the world via multiple free trade agreements. But, trade deals take many forms and are notoriously difficult and time consuming to negotiate. Most existing trade agreements either exclude services or apply in limited

respects to services and the UK is very heavily dependent on them and account for about 80 per cent of GDP. The EU itself has free trade agreements with about 60 countries (which the UK currently benefits from) including Switzerland, Norway and South Africa, but it has failed to negotiate agreements with any of the major economies of the world. So, what will be the position if the trade deals don’t materialise or take years to negotiate?

At the moment, the UK is part of the EU’s single market and customs union. As such, UK businesses can sell their goods to customers anywhere in the EU without those customers having to pay any import tariff. Likewise, UK consumers can import goods without having to pay import tariffs. In 2015, 44 per cent of UK exports and 53 per cent of UK imports were with/from the EU. In the event that the Brexit negotiations don’t result in a trade agreement with the EU, then the parties will fall back on the rules and tariffs of the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

This would result in tariffs on trade between the UK and the EU. However, while the UK is a founding member of the WTO, it would need to renegotiate with the WTO its own trade regime setting for example upper tariff limits. The other 163 members of the WTO (including the EU) could themselves delay such a renegotiation. In relation to post-Brexit trade with non-EU members, again, to the extent that the UK has no separate trade agreement in place, the WTO rules would apply. The UK hasn’t negotiated a trade deal since 1973, so clearly there is much work for the next UK government. As the Prime Minister has already signalled, some form of transitional agreement with the EU looks likely.

Developers keen to get a piece of the action in Hull Commercial and residential projects planned for city centre sites DEVELOPERS seeking a piece of the action arising from City of Culture are targeting sites in Hull. Doncaster-based Empire Property Concepts Ltd is planning a commercial and residential project after completing the acquisition of the Miss Buffet Chinese restaurant site in Jameson Street. Sheffield-based BMV 1 Ltd is planning the redevelopment of the nearby former Lloyds Bank in George Street for residential use on the upper floors and a commercial unit on the ground floor. Garness Jones, which acted in both acquisitions, is also working with the new owner of King William House, an 80,000sq ft office block in Hull’s Old Town, where planning permission is being sought for conversion to 30 apartments with four commercial units. Paul White, agency director of Garness Jones, said: “City of Culture has brought positive press for Hull and what we have seen in particular over the past 12 months is a lot of interest from inward investors from out of town. “They want to get a piece of the action in Hull and we are trying to get a balance between residential, office, retail and leisure. “A lot of buildings in the city centre have been vacant for many years and are now being brought back into use. “The redevelopment work will create jobs and the new uses will bring opportunities. “Hopefully, the change in the city centre environment will attract more offices and other businesses into the city centre.” Empire has a track record of converting offices and refurbishing existing apartments to create new residential opportunities across the Yorkshire region. the Jameson Street site after completing a successful conversion above Heron Foods in Paragon Street. He said: “We’ve created 19 apartments in Paragon Street and lettings are going really well; in just a few months we’ve got up to nearly 70 per cent. “We expect to start work in Jameson Street in the next three or four weeks and will provide 18 student bedrooms on the three upper floors plus ground-floor commercial space. “Hull has been neglected for a number of years and finally the Government and others are taking an interest. “There is a lot of positive activity going on around City of Culture and Siemens and we are looking to buy more properties in the city.” Garness Jones is contacting restaurant operators for the ground floor and is looking at the restaurant and gym sectors for the George Street site. Mark Harrison, director of BMV 1 Ltd, said: “The prices in places like Manchester, Sheffield, Leeds and Nottingham have gone through the roof but there is a lot going on in Hull and that’s why I like it. “I normally sell developments for other developers but this will be my first big job.” King William House was sold to a Hull developer last year and a planning application for conversion to residential use has now been submitted. A second application for the ground-floor commercial development is likely to be lodged later this year.

New business hub proves a hit with local companies Lots of interest in park offering office space and workshop facilities ONE of Hull’s newest and biggest business parks is attracting interest from companies across the region. The Ideal Business Park in National Avenue has been developed by the Lightowler facilities management group, a Hull company with a history stretching back more than 160 years. Lightowler bought the land from Ideal Standard to enable it to further expand on the site, and to also offer opportunities for other businesses to grow. Ben Cooper, associate agency surveyor with sole letting agents PPH Commercial, said he had already received a good amount of enquiries about the development. BIGINTERVIEW

Ex-firefighter using skills he honed on frontline to create safer skyscrapers Paul Blake talks to Catherine Lea about founding his own company in the face of adversity

RISING DEMAND: Former firefighter Paul Blake has relocated his business, Altor Fire, to The Deep Business Centre in Hull.

W

hen firefighter Paul Blake was forced to step down because of eyesight problems, he knew he had to make some big career decisions. Paul was diagnosed with the eye disorder kerataconus after ten years as a firefighter in Cornwall and Leicestershire. Deciding against a regime of annual medicals, which would inevitably bring early retirement, he instead focused on getting a job that would pay the bills. He worked in motor parts and debt collection, but longed for something that would use the skills he had honed on the frontline. So, in 2003, he set up Altor Fire to deliver fire risk assessments and training, later developing his skills and experience in order to expand into assessing buildings including offices, business parks and schools. Despite leaving school with limited qualifications, Paul is now setting the high-tech standards internationally for tower block fire safety and evacuation; protecting the new generation of skyscrapers – and the people inside. He said: “People are moving from rural areas into the cities, there is a need for taller buildings, and for fire protection and evacuation. In London alone there will be 455 tall buildings going up in the next three years.” Paul completed a masters degree in fire and explosion engineering at Leeds University in 2012, focusing on the design of an evacuation strategy based around elevators that can be used safely in a fire. Completing this qualification was something of a gamechanger, and saw Altor Fire move up to bigger projects. After this, he worked on a Phd

focusing on fire-testing construction materials and computer modelling fire spread and evacuation in tall buildings. He said: “My masters degree research project was based on a building of 40 storeys, but these days a tall building can mean anything up to 200 storeys – and the trend is towards buildings, which will be more than 1km high. “There are very few people who are pure fire engineers, even fewer who do computer modelling, and fewer again for tall buildings. “In addition to the ground level assessments, I’ve been asked to speak at conferences about tall buildings in Spain and the United States. I expect a lot more invitations from all over the world in the next few years.” Paul is now working on the

design of a new warehouse for one of Hull’s biggest employers and on student accommodation for a major northern university. He also carries out high hazard risk assessments for chemical plants, steelworks and other industrial installations and now the sky – literally – is the limit. In readiness for the rising demand for Altor Fire’s services Paul has commissioned three staff on a freelance basis and has moved the business from his home in Hull to a pod at The Deep Business Centre. He said: “I’ve had three people helping me during the last year, but I may need to take on some staff as well. “The people at The Deep help me make sure my business runs efficiently, and it has really energised my company.” The Twin Towers terror

In London alone there will be 455 tall buildings going up in the next three years Paul Blake

attack of 2001 and a fire in a 73-storey hotel in Dubai on New Year’s Eve, 2015, are ready examples of the risks of building ever higher. Paul’s work involves modelling how fires can start and spread at such heights, and how people can get out alive. He said: “When 9/11 happened a lot of people were evacuated using the lifts. “You could say they shouldn’t have done that, but if they hadn’t they could still have been in the building when the tower collapsed. “This is one example of an alternative evacuation strategy. “In Dubai, the fire started on a balcony light fitting and spread across the exterior façade. “With some tall buildings the external walling is not appropriate. Others might be designed correctly but, because of the way a fire can spread with the wind and other factors, at a higher level they end up not being effective. “That’s the sort of thing I am trying to model, so that we can design evacuation procedures.”

Social housing specialist finds new opportunities Architectural firm expands into commercial and industrial sector

By Catherine Lea Business Reporter c.lea@hulldailymail.co.uk

A COMPANY that specialises in designing social housing projects has expanded into the commercial and industrial sector. Eznat was founded in 2010 by chartered architect Joe Bvumburai. The company is currently involved in projects that will provide almost 200 homes across the Yorkshire and Humber region, and has also branched out into the office sector with a substantial development near Leeds. To accommodate its recent growth, Eznat has now taken on new staff and is strengthening its commercial partnerships following a move to the One Business Village in Hull. Mr Bvumburai said: “Our background is in housing associations and we specialise in extra care housing, but our work in that sector in West Yorkshire led to our involvement in planning a new office development. “Meanwhile, our move into a mainstream business environment is introducing us to new opportunities.” Prior to launching Eznat, Mr Bvumburai held senior development roles with housing associations across the UK, includ-

After outgrowing its former home at the University of Hull’s Enterprise Centre, Eznat became one of the first tenants at One Business Village, which is being converted from the old

Interbulk depot in Emily Street. The firm’s current projects include more than 160 homes in West Yorkshire, a development to create 11 executive homes near Grimsby, and work on two smaller housing sites in east Hull. The feasibility study for an

office development on the outskirts of Leeds is a rare foray for Eznat into commercial work, and Mr Bvumburai said he believes more will follow as the team expands. He said: “We’re very active in West Yorkshire but we are also being invited to take on more work in the Hull and Humber region. “We have expanded our team to three and I’m now working towards appointing an architect and an architectural technician. “As part of the office move we have invested in technology to increase productivity and now we are meeting potential new partners and finding new projects. “Some of those are about extra care housing, because bed blocking is a key issue for the NHS and there needs to be greater provision. “Others, however, are commercial projects which result from talking to other businesses about how to build to accommodate expansion.”

Business leaders from across the region come together IT’S that time of year again when Humber businesses join together to showcase the wealth of talent, entrepreneurship, vision and future potential of our region by Anita Pace, through a diverse chairman of programme of events Bondholders that both inspire and educate. Humber Business Week, now it its 13th year, is Europe’s longest established festival of business – running this year from June 5 to 9 – with all corners of the Humber actively engaged. It boasts such a wealth of support from the business community that it continues to grow year upon year and 2017 is projected to be the best yet, with a bumper week of more than 50 events promised. With a unique assemblage of highprofile keynote speakers, expos, conferences, workshops, tours, celebration receptions – and an array of networking breakfasts and lunches – Humber Biz Week is well-recognised as the pinnacle of the

regional business event calendar. It’s no surprise then, that it also marks the biggest event in the Bondholders Breakfast calendar. The Bondholders Breakfast is recognised as the formal curtain-raiser to the week and has so far never failed to disappoint. Each year we create something of a spectacle to wow circa 400 business delegates and energise them for the week ahead. Previous event formats have included bespoke comedy sketch performances, working with Hull Truck Theatre to dispel negative perceptions and raise awareness of the region, as well as Through The Keyhole and Opportunity Knocks game show parodies at the KCOM Stadium, featuring famous faces from across the region such as former MP Alan Johnson and Humber born and bred comedy circuit professionals Lucy Beaumont and Lloyd Griffiths. This year’s Bondholders event is set to

raise the bar even higher with a new programme being created exclusively for Biz Week that’s sure to get the week off to a flying start. Core to its positioning is the venue and Bondholders is proud to be working alongside the University of Hull, which will share the fantastic facilities at its new multi-million-pound facility, Middleton Hall. As a world-class 400-seater concert hall, the versatile events space can be adapted to host theatre productions and surround-sound cinema screenings, and is completed by a new Arts Café, making it the perfect backdrop for such a special event. The Bondholders Breakfast is being held on Monday, June 5 (networking from 7.45am – event closes at 9.30am). It’s a free event and is open to all businesses across the Humber region (you don’t have to be a Bondholder member to come along). We look forward to what I’m sure will be another successful week of business events. ■ Anyone interested in attending the Bondholder Breakfast should email bondholders@marketinghumber.com or call 01482 485242.

‘Be ambassadors for our city’ Businesses leaders being called on to encourage contacts to invest in area HULL businesses leaders are being urged to act as ambassadors for the city and encourage more investors to bring jobs to the area. Kathryn Shillito, HullBID city centre manager, says her organisation is in demand among operators of business improvement districts in other cities who want to learn from the transformation in Hull. She said local firms are also spreading the word to their contacts. “HullBID has been called upon to advise the operators of new business improvement districts in cities including Sunderland and Leeds,” she said. “It is great to know business owners are sharing Hull’s success stories among their contacts.” Andy Steele, owner of 360 Chartered Accountants, said: “One of my clients is thinking of opening a new office somewhere in Yorkshire and I persuaded them to come and look at Hull. “I gave them a guided tour which ended at Humber Street and they

were blown away. There’s no guarantee they will come here, but they were very impressed, and Hull wasn’t even on their list before that.” HullBID this week hosted a networking event that brought together owners of city centre businesses for an update on investment by Wykeland Beal in the Fruit Market area. The event took place at the Holiday Inn on Hull Marina, where delegates also heard about the improvements being made by British Waterways Marinas Ltd. Yvette Stafford, managing director of Browns Books for Students in George Street, Hull, was one of the business leaders who attended the event. She said: “It’s fantastic to come to an event like this and see the enthusiasm for Hull. The improvements are long overdue and very welcome, and it is great to see

everybody getting behind the city.” David Donkin, property director of Wykeland Group, and his colleague, development surveyor Tom Watson, outlined the progress made so far in Humber Street and the wider Fruit Market area, and told how the new businesses

TIME RUNNING OUT FOR BIO-ETHANOL? Frustration mounts as Government continues to delay decision on E10 fuel FRUSTRATION is mounting inside the UK’s leading bioethanol plant as government delays continue to cast doubt on the operation’s future. Vivergo Fuels at Saltend is the UK’s largest producer of bioethanol, which is blended with conventional petrol to make a greener, more sustainable transport fuel. All petrol currently sold in the UK is a blend of 95 per cent unleaded and 5 per cent bioethanol (E5). The Renewable Energy Directive (Red) lays out a legal requirement for EU countries to ensure at least 10 per cent of their transport fuels come from renewable sources by 2020. E10 – a blend of petrol containing 10 per cent bioethanol – is already available throughout Europe, and is now the biggest-selling fuel in France. However, the UK continues to lag behind. Numerous industry reports – including a task force published in 2015 by the Department for Transport itself – concluded E10 would be the most efficient and cost effective way to meet its 2020 targets. However a change of Government, Brexit uncertainty and the upcoming general election are among events that have thus far stalled any announcements from the corridors of power.

By Catherine Lea Business Reporter c.lea@hulldailymail.co.uk

Now, after yet more delays, managing director Mark Chesworth says time is running out for the industry as a whole. He said: “We continue to invest in the business – there has to date been well over £400m of capital expenditure, and we are looking at what we can do for the future in terms of more investment, which will ultimately lead to more jobs. “But we are now at a critical stage. “By their very nature, investors take risks. If we thought we had picked the wrong technology or were doing it wrong then fine, that would be a risk. “But all evidence, including that coming from the Government, points to E10 as being the best solution for meeting its targets, and yet we are still waiting the Government to make a decision.” The UK also has a target to reduce its domestic transport emissions by 43 per cent by 2032. Despite this, transport carbon emissions actually rose in 2015. All new car models manufactured are now optimised to run on E10, with a full UK roll-out of E10

‘First power’ at Race Bank wind farm RENEWABLES: An offshore wind farm that will feature the first turbine blades manufactured in Hull has begin exporting energy to the national grid. The first turbines have now been installed at Dong Energy’s Race Bank Offshore Wind Farm, located off the North Norfolk coast. Once completed, the wind farm will consist of 91 Siemens 6 megawatt (MW) turbines. These will include the blades manufactured at Siemens Gamesa’s factory in Hull, which are expected to be installed later in the year. Klaus Skoust Møller, Dong energy’s programme director for Race Bank , said: “I’m delighted we’ve reached first power at Race Bank, which is an important milestone that proves every part of the transmission and generation equipment at the wind farm is successfully working. Construction is progressing well and on schedule. “It will be great to see the first blades from Hull loaded out and installed on the remaining turbines in the coming weeks as well.” Once all 91 turbines are installed, Race Bank will be capable of generating 573 MW of electricity – enough capacity to meet the annual electricity demands of more than half a million UK homes. About two thirds (180) of the blades at Race Bank will come from the Siemens facility in Hull. Construction of Race Bank is being managed from Dong Energy’s construction base in Grimsby. Last year, DONG Energy announced plans for a multi-million-pound investment in Grimsby, to create the UK’s largest offshore wind operations and maintenance hub, which will serve Race Bank once it becomes operational.

Time running out for bio-ethanol? Continued from PAGE 1 estimated to deliver greenhouse gas savings equal to taking 700,000 cars off the road. Mr Chesworth said: “In terms of reducing emissions, the UK has very stiff targets to meet, never mind the air quality issues. “These are not voluntary targets, they are legally binding, and the UK is now in breach of regulations. “We think the DfT is going to score an own goal; this is an opportunity to create jobs in the North while reducing CO2 emissions and meeting targets, and yet despite concerns we have raised repeatedly with Government, and through the media, and despite the publication of consultations and reports in favour of E10, we are still waiting.” Vivergo employs 150 people, as well as supporting more than 3,000 jobs in the supply chain, adding an estimated £500-600m to UK GDP. “The Humber is the energy estuary; we have a really powerful energy sector here in the Humber, and Vivergo has the potential the play a huge part in the region’s success,” said Mr Chesworth. “Vivergo is the largest bioethanol plant in the UK, and the second largest in Europe, and we have created lots of STEM [science, technology, engineering and mathematics] jobs, with the potential to create more. “But the industry continues to suffer losses and we have some very capable, highly skilled engineers that are now as anxious as I am. “We are now heading into an election, after which will be the summer recess, meaning there is a very real possibility we could be little further forward as we get to into autumn or even 2018. “I have sat on two working groups and a task force, I have submitted evidence to various reports and committees, we have had a lot of support locally, from MPs and councillors, but despite even Government reports supporting the roll-out of E10, we have yet to see any appetite for moving a decision.”

Arco digital team docks at Fruit Market offices Move aims to ‘promote collaboration, creativity and pace of change’ By Catherine Lea Business Reporter c.lea@hulldailymail.co.uk

Not all in the family

ARCO has moved its digital team to the @TheDock development in Hull’s Fruit Market. The move is part of Arco’s biggest change programme to date and is aimed at accelerating the company’s digital development. The new office will house the 50-plus strong digital team, as well as up to 20 consultants and partners working on Arco’s Digital First transformation programme. Some of the team have transferred from Arco’s headquarters in Waverley Street, Hull, with others newly hired as part of ongoing recruitment that will add 30 new jobs in digital disciplines such as software development, search engine optimisation, online analytics and systems architecture. Arco’s Digital First programme began in January and will run over the next three to five years, with the company investing more than £30m in the transfor mation. More than 150 Arco staff are working on projects as part of the programme. Richard Martin, Arco’s digital director, is leading the programme. He said: “The working environment has been purposedesigned to promote collaboration, creativity and pace of change. “This is where the digital team

EARLIER this month, Arco unveiled significant changes to its board, which included the appointment of Neil Jowsey, former joint managing director, as the safety company’s first CEO and sole business leader. Mr Jowsey’s appointment marks the first time in more than 110 years that the Hull firm has been led by a non-family member. Thomas Martin, who has led the business as joint managing director for more than 15 years, has stepped into the role of non-executive chairman. The company also announced it was creating a new telesales team at its Waverley Street headquarters, creating 28 jobs.

DIGITAL DRIVE: From left, Richard Martinfor, Dominic Gibbons, Neil Jowsey and John Gouldthorp at @TheDock. is based and the home for the whole Digital First programme, but it will also be used by many Arco colleagues. People from across the business will be encouraged to work from here for a half a day or a day at a time, using the meeting spaces and hot-desking facilities.” Family-owned Arco was founded in Hull 133 years ago and is the UK’s leading safety company, employing 1,700 people across the UK, including more than 800 in its home city. The company offers more than 170,000 personal protection

equipment, workwear, safety footwear and workplace safety products. The digital drive will involve a complete rebuild of the Arco website to raise online sales from 40 per cent to more than 60 per cent. Mr Martin, who is a fourthgeneration member of the founding family, said the move opened up opportunities for collaboration and made the business more attractive when competing for tech talent. He said: “We now want to strengthen our links with the

local digital community and tap into specialist skills within C4DI. “Being based here means we are perfectly placed to do that. “This is a stimulating and engaging environment that helps people to be creative and that’s a really important part of our transformation. “We need to be creative, agile and more responsive to ever-changing customer needs.” Over the next two to three years, Arco’s existing Waverley Street headquarters will undergo a significant refurbishment.

Innovative device to help keep track of your moods

24/7 Advertising for private and trade Accountants

WORRIED ABOUT TAX AND SELF ASSESSMENT?

By Catherine Lea

FROM gadgets that measure how many steps we take to gizmos that monitor our heart rate, sleep and even the calories we consume, there is now a host of devices on the market that can tell us how fit and healthy we are. But what about something that can help us understand how we are feeling? An innovative Hull company has now created a unique product which, for the first time, offers a metric for happiness. Moodbeam is a small device that enables users to log whether they are feeling happy or sad by pressing one of two buttons. The data is then recorded and over time creates a series of patterns that can be used by parents, carers, relatives or employees, to establish triggers and pave the way for conversations that can help make the world a happier place. The idea behind the product started when co-founder Christina Colmer McHugh’s discovered her daughter was being bullied. She said: “My eldest daughter came home from school and told me she thought she was getting bullied. My heart stopped. “She is such a happy child and nothing fazes her, so to hear she might be being bullied shook me to the core. “I began looking for something that would enable me to see how she was feeling when I wasn’t around, and realised there was nothing on the market.” Mrs Colmer McHugh approached friend and fellow entrepreneur Jonathan Elvidge with her idea, and Moodbeam was born. The founder and former managing director of the Gadget Shop and co-founder and managing director of the brand-leading RED5 gift and gadget business said he was “blown away” by the concept, and the two began looking at how to turn the idea into reality.

Originally designed with children in mind, the overwhelming response to the innovative product has seen its scope expand into healthcare settings, businesses, family settings – basically anywhere there are people. Mrs Colmer McHugh said: “We have had such an amazing response. “We have approached people with the view

Moodbeam is now being trialled within 20 different sectors and age-related groups. BIGINTERVIEW

‘Investing in people is investing in the future’ The directors of MB Roche and Sons tell Catherine Lea about plugging the skills gap

T

he UK’s construction industry is, like many sectors, facing a mammoth challenge in terms of skills. Construction is regarded as one of the main pillars of the nation’s economy, yet its success depends on finding enough skilled workers to keep the wheels of industry moving. A study by Constructing Excellence in Yorkshire & Humber (CEYH) predicts 190,000 construction jobs will be created by the end of 2018, causing an ongoing headache for employers and educators alike. One East Yorkshire family firm is now seeking to play its part in addressing the skills issue, by offering work placements and job support to veterans. MB Roche and Sons Ltd has teamed up with Buildforce to connect veterans with construction opportunities, providing work placements and full-time employment to service leavers, together with mentoring guidance on identifying transferrable skills, training and jobs. Director Daniel Roche said: “There is a real skills gap in construction, which appears to be getting worse. “I came across Buildforce and immediately thought ex-military people would fit the bill perfectly. For me, they have a can-do attitude, have great communication skills, are self-motivated, good problem-solvers, team players, reliable, can multitask and are honest. “But it appears they are not the best at selling themselves.” MB Roche and Sons was launched on March 15, 1977, by Malcom Roche. The family-run civil engineering company is now run with the help of Malcolm’s sons Daniel and Matthew. The company’s work with veterans has now resulted in it being nominated for a national Inspiring Change Award. But while thinking outside of the box to overcome the skills gap is one thing, surviving as a business through one of the toughest recessions in living memory is quite another. When the recession began to bite, construction was one of the first industries to suffer, with cut-throat pricing and a “best price wins” attitude being the approach of many firms struggling to stay afloat. MB Roche, however, took a different tactic, instead sticking to its guns that best value and high quality was the right solution for success. As the firm marks its 40th year of suc-

‘BEST VALUE APPROACH’: From left, Malcolm, Matthew and Dan Roche, of MB Roche. cess, it is an approach that clearly works for the company, whose clients include Sewell Group, Cranswick Country Foods and Ideal Boilers. Malcolm said: “We owe our success to a reputation for good work, honest prices and looking after the best interests of our clients. Our aim is to offer a best value approach, with a shift away from lowest price wins to a best value philosophy, delivered by the right people with the right training, qualifications and experience.” While the family business is intent on laying the foundations for future success, factors outside of its control remain a challenge. In 2015, Daniel wrote a letter to the city’s MPs and councillors, warning that appointing larger contractors to complete the public realm works in Hull would result in millions of pounds leaving the city. Having formed a collaboration with East Yorkshire firms PBS Construction and Wright Civil Engineering to tender for the work, he pointed out that awarding the public realm contract locally would pump money back into the local economy. The contract was ultimately handed to Eurovia, and continues to be beset with delays and “snagging” issues. He said: “ There was a real opportunity with the City of Culture, to champion local companies and showcase and develop the skills of local people, adding value to the local economy, leaving a citywide legacy. “The £25m has now left the city and will never return.” While the move to form a larger consortium did not in this instance win the work, MB Roche’s ongoing investment in its people ensures the groundworks specialist can access tendering processes that lesser qualified companies cannot. “By understanding our employees we are maximising their benefit to our company and in return they feel more valued and are more motivated,” Daniel said. “Investing in them is investing in their future, leading to reduced absenteeism and a higher quality of work.”

Growing recycling firm’s new ‘Enviro-Hub’ home Social enterprise moves to larger headquarters to meet demand By Catherine Lea Business Reporter c.lea@hulldailymail.co.uk

A SOCIAL enterprise that helps equip the long-term unemployed for careers in the renewables industry has expanded into new headquarters. Hull’s Enviromail was founded in 2007 and now recycles waste materials from more than 400 businesses across the Humber. To help it meet a growing demand for its service, the notfor-profit recycling firm has bought and converted a site in Studley Street, off Holderness Road, investing £275,000 to convert the 20,000sq ft premises into a new “Enviro-Hub”. Peter Lemon, director at Enviromail, said: “We are in the middle of a period of continued, sustainable growth and had simply outgrown our old site in Beverley Road. “There’s materials coming in and out all the time, and we are encouraging more and more local businesses to recycle their cardboard, office paper, plastic film and glass, as well as utilising our confidential waste service. “The aim with Enviro-Hub is to help and support these businesses while providing a variety of ongoing training services.” Enviromail recycles glass, card, plastic film and confidential waste, using its services to train and educate the disadvantaged and long-term unemployed in skills applicable to the renewables sector and for general employment. It employs 12 staff and serves local businesses and large corporations across the region, as well as the public sector ,charities and community groups. The investment received financial backing from Barclays

It has also provided the organisation with significant upgrades to its warehouse space. Fellow director Katy Swaby

said: “We are now able to bring our wagons straight into the factory to drop off any recycling for processing and have the space to store processed materials safely inside.” Enviromail’s new move comes hot on the heels of a capital investment, supported by Green Port Hull, for a new custommade “closed-loop” glass recycler.

This turns old glass into sand which is then turned back into bottles and jars, with research from Wrap suggesting that every tonne of glass recycled via a closed-loop system saves 314kg of CO2 from entering the atmosphere. The energy saving from recycling one bottle will power a computer for 20 minutes.

Firm promotes reusable coffee cups SERVICES: A Hull business is leading a local awareness campaign designed to fight the waste generated from nonrecyclable coffee cups. UK consumers get through 10,000 takeaway coffee cups every two minutes, contributing to a vast amount of waste that, despite its cardboard exterior, is not recyclable. The Promotion

Company is now urging businesses to offer reusable coffee cups instead. Managing director Angela Oldroyd said: “Some caffeine lovers assume their cardboard and plastic cups are recyclable. However, while the disposable cups are technically recyclable, their polyethylene lining is notoriously difficult to separate from the rest of

the cup, requiring specialist treatment that can only be provided by two facilities in the UK. As a result, just 1 in 400 cups will be recycled, the rest ending up in landfill. “Many of our clients are already providing reusable cups which carry their branding. “They are not only environmentally friendly, with customisable features,

30 May - 4 June FESTIVALS RIGHT ON YOUR DOORSTEP

BACK TO OURS IS ONE OF THE MAIN EVENTS SUPPORTED BY FUNDING FROM PUBLIC AND LOTTERY SOURCES. The second in the four-part series of ground-breaking, half-term holiday festivals will feature award-winning aerial acrobatics, standup comedy for kids, poetry, interactive theatre, live music and singalong films in the heart of Hull’s neighbourhoods from 30 May to 4 June. Held at community venues across the city, the first in the series took place in February and proved to be a huge success. But the value of the shows goes beyond the immediate enjoyment.

The amazing spectacle of Hull’s year as the UK City of Culture would not have been possible without the partner organisations who have sponsored the programme. From funding the volunteer army to enabling some of the year’s biggest events, the support from public sector organisations, trusts and foundations has helped make the year truly remarkable. Hull 2017’s partners have been involved in some of the country’s biggest events including the 2012 Cultural Olympiad, a programme of cultural events across the United Kingdom that accompanied the 2012 Summer Olympics and Paralympics. So it was fantastic they recognised Hull’s year as something worth supporting and what it could do for the people and the city. Their generous support for Hull’s year

of arts and culture has been enormous and the impact can be seen far and wide. The Hull 2017 story is reaching people across the UK and beyond, helping them to engage with this national cultural festival and encourage them to look again at Hull and at what they perceive as culture. Fran Hegyi, Executive Director at Hull 2017, said: “Art and culture can be extremely impactful, we’ve witnessed this with our programme. It can inspire our education system, boost our economy and give not only our city, but our nation international standing. Our partners are crucial to our success. They have contributed both significant financial investment and broader experiential support which has helped ensure our programme excels.” Discover more: hull

Liam Foster at Archbishop Sentamu Academy, a Back To Ours venue, said: “Being involved in the Back To Ours Festival was a natural fit for us and we are delighted by the impact it has made. The Academy has a rich history of school productions and students competing in international dance competitions. We have always encouraged our students to be involved with local culture and performing arts and have found that involvement with the arts has a positive impact on attainment and attendance in school. Productions rarely tour in areas like ours, so to be involved in accessible, affordable events for our community has been incredible.

of our event spaces. People familiar with the Academy also complimented us for converting the school into a professional theatre and emulating the experience which you would have in a city centre venue. We’re all excited about the festival in May, the impact this year is having on our city is remarkable.” Pete Massey, Director - North, Arts Council England, said: “Following the success of the first festival earlier this year, I’m delighted the Arts Council is continuing to support Back To Ours. We believe that everyone should have access to great art and culture, regardless of where they live. Back To Ours is a fantastic example of this - bringing world-class entertainment at an affordable price to every corner of Hull, meaning residents from across the city can enjoy and take part in this exciting year.” Tickets now on sale: hull .co.uk/backtoours

In addition, Pearson Electrical has also agreed electrical installation and maintenance contracts with the City Cruises York tourist boat company, and the Parkol Marine Engineering trawler manufacturer, based in Whitby. “It’s not possible to predict exactly how much work the co-operation with RTS will bring to both parties,

but we expect to be beefing up our operations in order to meet increased demand for electrical and maintenance services for the marine and renewable sectors,” said Mr Pearson. “Coupled with our new agreements with City Cruises York and Parkol, we expect to be very busy for some time to come, which is just fantastic.” All of this follows an arrangement Pearson Electrical agreed with Siemens Gamesa in February to provide maintenance work on

WORKERS in Yorkshire and the Humber region are nearly £1,400 a year worse off than they were in 2008, according to new analysis published today by the Trades Union Congress (TUC). Real wages in the region are said to be 6.2 per cent lower, on average, than they were before the financial crash of nine years ago. And the TUC says that things could get worse, with a Bank of England warning that real earnings will fall for the rest of this year. Paul Nowak, pictured, TUC deputy general secretary was today due to launch a poster campaign in several Yorkshire and Humber constituencies calling on all parties to “give Britain a pay rise”. The TUC says the rise in precarious work – such as zero-hours contracts – is helping drive the fall in living standards. One in five (18 per cent) jobs created in Yorkshire and the Humber since 2011 have been in insecure work, it says, the TUC estimating that 244,127 people now work in insecure jobs in the region – up from 204,791 in 2011. That represents one in ten workers in Yorkshire. Mr Nowak said: “Workers in Yorkshire and the Humber are nearly £1,400 a year worse off than before the crash. “This region badly needs a pay rise. It’s nearly ten years since the financial crisis, and working people are still suffering. Politicians have to explain to voters how they’ll create decent jobs that people can actually live on. “And there needs to be recognition of the damage pay restrictions in the public sector are having. Hard-working nurses shouldn’t have to use food banks to get by.”

A CITY electrical firm supported by Green Port Hull has grown its workforce and boosted its annual turnover after signing the latest in a number of new deals. Pearson Electrical Ltd has signed a framework agreement with RTS Wind Recruitment Ltd, bringing together the respective strengths of each organisation and enabling both to support future UK contracts. This reciprocal personnel leasing co-operation agreement is one of three deals that Pearson Electrical, based in Pioneer Park, Clough Road, Hull, has recently secured, resulting in a 25 per cent increase in its workforce – from 15 to 19 people – and boosting its annual turnover by 20 per cent. The co-operation with RTS Wind Recruitment, of Savile Street, Hull, is a significant step for both parties, and will further enhance the combined service offering to the local and UK offshore sector. Mark Pearson, managing director of Pearson Electrical, which three years ago was made up of just three employees, said: “Our company is growing at its fastest pace ever, thanks largely to our relationship with the Green Port Hull initiative, which has provided us with access to invaluable support, including help in securing unique industry-leading ISO accreditations. “Given the size of the jobs we are now taking on, our average contracts team has also doubled in size, from five to ten engineers per initiative.” The Government plans to install a total of 3,000 North Sea wind turbines over the next seven years, in

Pearson plugging into wind power Continued from PAGE 1 components on the 402MW Dudgeon Offshore Wind Farm. Pearson Electrical has built up 30 years’ specialist experience in the marine, industrial and hazardous area sectors, and the ISO accreditations it recently achieved with the help of funding from Green Port Hull has opened the door to some of its biggest framework agreements, including the RTS Wind Recruitment arrangement. Terry Bubb, recruitment manager for RTS Wind Recruitment, said: “We’re pleased to have entered into a reciprocal co-operation with Pearson. “RTS Wind Recruitment is a subsidiary of RTS Wind Ltd, a leading provider of installation and maintenance services to key customers both in the onshore and offshore sector. “The UK remains a key focus to RTS and we shall continue to invest in our operational organisation and forge new relationships with key partners. “We look forward to working together with Pearson in providing high-quality and cost-effective services.” With an investment totalling about £26m, the Green Port Growth Programme, supported by the Regional Growth Fund, is designed to provide continual support to help local businesses recognise and embrace potential opportunities in the renewables sector. The programme has been delivering support for employment and skills since 2012, with the aim of developing strength within the local engineering and manufacturing workforce. Dawn Hall, project manager for the initiative’s business support team, said: “Pearson Electrical is a fantastic example of what local businesses can achieve if they embrace the support we offer – from initial business diagnostics to advice on everything from internal systems to marketing. “It is our mission to ensure local businesses benefit as much as possible from renewable energy investment in our region, and it is great to see highquality firms like this benefiting in the form of exponential growth.”

Ready to raise curtain on 13th festival of business

2017 event comes at ‘time of unprecedented change’ in the region THE curtain is about to go up on Humber Business Week 2017, and it is expected to highlight exciting investment, development and future opportunities for companies across the region. Organisations and leading individuals behind Humber Business Week say this year’s event comes as the region is “experiencing unprecedented change and development”, and “reaping the benefits” of Hull’s year in the national spotlight. The 13th annual festival of business kicks off on Monday with the highly anticipated Bondholder Breakfast launch, at the University of Hull – an event to be followed immediately by a presentation from RB on its £105m investment in the region. The week is crammed with events – the vast majority free to attend – hosted by leading organisations and businesses and boasting top name speakers from the likes of the Institute of Directors, the Bank of England, EY, Hull 2017 and Siemens. It is an event the region can be proud of and look forward to, according to Lord Haskins, chairman of the Humber Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), which is again supporting the week and hosting its own events. He said: “Humber Business Week is always a success in joining businesses from around the region, allowing all involved to develop relationships and provide opportunities to businesses of all shapes and sizes in networking and learning from one another. “It is something that I am proud for the LEP to be involved in, as I feel the local economy certainly benefits from the collaboration and the opportunity to showcase what the Humber has to offer. “This year’s Business Week takes place at a time when the Humber is experiencing unprecedented change and development.”

By Debbie Hall Business Reporter d.hall@hulldailymail.co.uk

Kath Lavery, chairman of the Business Week Steering Group, has once again urged businesses to make the week their own, and take advantage of the huge opportunities to network, learn and be inspired. She said: “I always say to the Humber business community, it is your week, make the most of it, get involved, and enjoy it. “And I know I say this every year, but I truly believe this one promises to be the best yet. “The strength and variety of the programme of events that has come together in 2017 really is outstanding.” The week has again been backed by the University of Hull, which has helped develop this year’s Business Week programme, and is playing host for many events, while staging a number of its own. Bill Walker, director for strategic relationships and knowledge exchange at the university, said “The university’s work with businesses – including contract research, consultancy and training – is worth about £17m a year and an independent economic impact report concluded the university generates £913m GVA a year, supporting 8,000 jobs. “We strive to play a full and active role with strategic partners to maximise our input to the economic and social wellbeing of the region. “That’s why the university has always been one of Humber Business Week’s strongest supporters.” ■ Visit www.humberbusinessweek.co.uk or download the mobile and tablet app by searching Humber Business Week on Google Play Store or the App Store.

Telling stories of city’s most inspiring women Hear about dressmaker and war zone photographer at dinner By Debbie Hall Business Reporter d.hall@hulldailymail.co.uk

A WOMAN who turned Hull into the home of fashion for royalty and the aristocracy, and another who travels the world’s war zones as a photographer will combine to captivate the audience at this year’s Hull Business Improvement District (HullBID) Inspiring Women dinner, which forms part of Humber Business Week. Madame Emily Clapham, who employed hundreds of local women and girls in the production of high-quality, bespoke outfits for the rich and famous, achieved unrivalled success during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Her story will be told by Susan Capes, assistant curator at Hull Culture and Leisure Ltd, at the dinner, which will take place at the Holiday Inn Hull Marina next Wednesday. Hull-born journalist and documentary photographer Dr Lee Karen Stow will present a slideshow talk about her work highlighting largely forgotten women of war and peace campaigners. From her international touring exhibition Poppies: Women, War, Peace, Dr Stow will introduce some of the many inspiring women whose stories often hide behind the bigger headlines. Dr Stow will also reveal a glimpse of her new exhibition Torn, to be launched for Hull City of Culture in November. Humber Business Week runs from Monday to Friday and is set to feature a packed and varied

BIGINTERVIEW

‘Starting a business was a leap of faith, but I’ve never looked back’ Donna Edgar, managing director of Sental Recruitment in Beverley, tells Debbie Hall how good relationships have built her company

D

onna Edgar had a successful career with a national recruitment agency – with a fantastic salary and benefits – before she took the plunge and set up her own business. “It’s hard to believe Sental Recruitment is now celebrating six fantastic years,” she said, “but like many entrepreneurs, I had to take a leap of faith at the beginning. “It’s terrifying, leaving a successful career with financial security, but after the birth of my second daughter, the time felt right to make the change, so I gave my notice. “As it happened, I had £700 in the bank, a five-month-old baby and one week to set up the back office functions, forecast finances, target clients, get a website and create a brand. “I managed, literally holding a phone in one hand and a baby in the other. Sental Recruitment was in business.” Donna said she was lucky to build relationships quickly and returned an income within the first five weeks of trading. “I will never forget the moment I told my husband that the business had made money already. “It is not uncommon for a business to take several months to have money coming into the bank account, but things fortunately didn’t take this long for Sental. “Starting a business is a nerve-racking time for your whole family at first, but my husband supported me no matter what. “I have never looked back and the business now has a successful team in place and is turning over half-a-million pounds a year. “I am so grateful to everyone who supported me and the business over the years. “I believe the secrets to our success are good business relationships and a positive attitude.

‘POSITIVE ATTITUDE’: Donna Edgar.

“However, setting up a business is a rollercoaster ride, it is hard work and you need to persevere – I worked from 7am to 10pm, seven days a week for the first 18 months. A new business is not something you can commit to half-heartedly.” Donna does own up to having made mistakes along the way. “Two years in, I was becoming too focused on big projects and had overcomplicated my business plan. “I took advice from other business owners and from colleagues within For Entrepreneurs Only (FEO), the business group that I was a part of, and set three top priorities, then only projects that aligned with these priorities were pursued and it really helped me get my business back on track. “It always pays to get advice from other business owners who have shared the experience of going it alone and I also mentor other business professionals to help guide them through the business minefield. “I would say to anyone who is feeling like they are alone, think again, there are so many people willing to help, you just need to ask. “FEO is great at matching members up, as well as providing business programmes to get started and grow. “I would also recommend having good relationships with your suppliers, such as having a good accountant – you can’t be the expert at everything, so pay for people to help your business that are.” To support Sental in the long-term, Donna has recruited a co-director. “Jenny relocated her life and young family from London to become part of Sental,” said Donna. “We had worked together previously and knew we would have a fantastic working relationship. “We bounce ideas off each other daily and, like the rest of the team we now have in place, Jenny has been invaluable in making Sental the success it is today. “The whole team gives 100 per cent every day and I am so grateful for the hard work they put in. “I am proud that 89 per cent of our business comes from national agreements with major global and FTSE companies across the UK. “This is because our ethical approach towards candidates and clients is not about making a fast buck, but more focused on long-term partnerships and ensuring people are happy with their chosen career move. “You have to understand your clients to be able to solve a problem for them. If you do a good job, people will recommend you and the growth of your business will come naturally.” ■ Sental Recruitment is at First Floor, Saxon House, Annie Reed Road, Beverley, HU17 0LF. MAJOR MILESTONE: Springfield Solutions cuts the ribbon on its £1.3m #PrintWorks development.

New chapter as £1.3m print room is unveiled Springfield Solutions investment doubles size of digital operation GLOBAL digital print, brand management and media company Springfield Solutions has officially unveiled its £1.3m digital #PrintWorks expansion, before an audience of dignitaries and business partners. The investment, at the Hull company’s headquarters in Thomas Street, has doubled the size of its digital print operation, which takes the overall building footprint from 20,000sq ft to more than 26,000sq ft. Printing capacity has increased by 30 per cent due to the extra print area and a digital press and finishing investment. The move comes off the back of three years of significant growth, starting in 2014 when the company printed more than 100 million labels in a year for the first time. By 2015, this had increased to 140 million, and 175 million last year.

By Debbie Hall Business Reporter d.hall@hulldailymail.co.uk

To cater for the continued growth, the company had no choice but to expand. It includes a new Screen Truepress L350UV inkjet digital press and two new finishing lines from Bridlington company AB Graphics International, bringing the company’s total operation to five digital presses. Dennis Ebeltoft, joint managing director of Springfield Solutions, said officially launching #PrintWorks has been a milestone in the company’s 42-year history. He said: “We’re absolutely delighted to be unveiling our new #PrintWorks digital print room, which heralds the next chapter in Springfield Solution’s incredible story.

“#PrintWorks is the culmination of many things: a history of innovation across all divisions of the business and special thank you to our sister company Eon Visual Media for their role in that; fantastic loyal staff, many of whom go above and beyond every day, constantly striving for improvement in everything that we do, and all our business partners that have assisted us on our jour ney. “These are the values that have fuelled our growth over recent years, and ultimately led to the opening of our #PrintWorks development.” Since being established in 1975, the company has grown from one man, one press, to employing more than 100 people locally, and has worked with some of the world’s biggest and best companies. The expansion has been made

possible by taking over the building adjacent to Springfield Solutions’ existing print room, increasing the production footprint by 100 per cent. Many years ago, the two buildings had been one, housing a long gone printing company. Together they were known as the PrintWorks, the name Springfield Solutions has revived for its expansion. Mr Ebeltoft said the extra capacity would see them print millions more labels and improve lead times for print and brand management customers. “The development will enable us to continue our journey of growth and gain market share,” he said. “Having more digital presses also means we have more capacity, consistency and continuity allowing us to innovate and push the boundaries of what digital print can do.”

Accountants’ surgery to show benefits of the cloud FINANCE: Hull and East Yorkshire based 360 Chartered Accountants is urging business owners to attend its Saturday Surgery, this weekend, to learn how cloud accounting can simplify the running of their financial affairs. As the region’s only gold-accredited Xero provider, 360 says it is

getting an increasing number of enquiries about how to use the software to its full effect. Paul Robinson, pictured, 360’s senior Xero-certified adviser, said: “Unlike many online accounts packages, it’s been written specifically for use over the internet and by mobile phones.

“That’s why so many people are turning to it. “However, we are finding that they’re struggling to use it or they don’t fully understand everything they can do with it.” The 360 Xero Workshop will take place at 360’s headquarters in Albion Street, Hull, from 9am to noon.

Experts will be on hand to give a free demonstration, answer any queries and offer some top tips. There is no need to make an appointment, but places can be booked by calling 01482 427360, emailing events@ 360accountants.co.uk or visiting www.360account ants.co.uk

WillerBee campaign has got the hospital buzzing Holiday homes firm donates seeds and bee houses to Hull Royal HULL-based holiday homes manufacturer Willerby has got hospital staff and patients buzzing about its new WillerBee campaign, thanks to a donation of 500 packets of bee-friendly seeds and four handcrafted bee houses. Hull Royal Infirmary (HRI) has taken the company’s campaign under its wing, with gardeners from the hospital planning to create a small patio area outside the hospital’s therapies centre and plant more seeds in new flower beds across the site. In the coming weeks, the bee houses, which have been crafted specially for Willerby’s campaign by prisoners at HMP Hull, will be situated around the therapies centre, where there are already plants and shrubs which are known to attract bees. It is hoped that, as well as supporting the conservation of the

Hedley Wilson, building estates officer at HRI, said: “We really appreciate Willerby’s kind donation of wildflower seeds and bee houses. “By planting flowers and creating areas which will attract wildlife, we’re hoping to make the hospital environment that bit more pleasant and relaxing for patients, visitors and staff.” Willerby recently became a corporate member of the Bumblebee Conservation Trust and this latest partnership with HRI is just one of a string of collaborations, as part of its year-long

KCOM staff create Shakespeare garden for youngsters COMMUNITY: Greenfingered KCOM employees took on an urban jungle as part of a project to create a Shakespeare-inspired garden for youngsters with learning difficulties. As part of its City of Culture celebrations, Sirius Academy West is transforming an

abandoned miniwilderness, off Boothferry Road, Hull, into a garden which will take inspiration from Shakespeare’s 18th sonnet, which famously asks “Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?” The Hull City Councilowned land, which is close to the academy, has

been overgrown for more than a decade, but now work is under way to turn it into a space where youngsters from Sirius’s sister school, Ganton, for children with learning difficulties, can go to enjoy the peace and tranquillity of an English country garden. To start the

transformation, a team of 18 volunteers from communications provider KCOM stepped in to clear the land. Eryl Stafford, KCOM’s director of engineering operations, said: “KCOM is part of the community here in Hull and East Yorkshire and it’s great to be able to contribute like this.”
