Black Horse 38 Old Village Road, Little Weighton, HU20 3US. Tel: 01482 847473 www.blackhorselittleweighton.com

THE Black Horse in Little Weighton is East Yorkshire’s best pub - and that’s official. It scooped the award at this year’s Remarkable East Yorkshire Tourism Awards to the delight of landlady Micaela Clegg, who has totally transformed the venue since taking it on five years ago. From humble beginnings, it’s now smart, modern and welcoming yet with the charm you would expect from a country pub. As well as welcoming locals for a pint and maintaining its important role in the community, it’s attracting diners from far and wide thanks to its fine food and great service, all in stylish surroundings. There’s a restaurant and bar menu, lunch time specials and hearty Sunday roasts served with unlimited fresh vegetables and lashings of gravy. Also proving popular are “Tasting Evenings” when the kitchen really gets to show off its talent over a relaxed seven-course meal. There’s a real sense of occasion with everyone arriving and eating at the same time. Guests who book at these events are in for a real treat of the best local and seasonal ingredients in a convivial atmosphere. The menu for May included lobster salad, seared tuna steak with wasabi

mayo, rack of lamb with red wine jus and Yorkshire asparagus, dessert was a ‘confused Bakewell tart’ comprising of an almond and pistachio creme brûlée, dark chocolate and cherry clafoutis and hazelnut icecream with an indulgent cheese course to finish. Excellent value wine packages carefully chosen to compliment the food are available on these nights too, making them the perfect choice for a celebration or something special. Tasting Evenings are planned for July, September and November. Throughout the summer, the Black Horse has plenty of appeal too, with a relaxing outdoor space in which to enjoy the sunshine with friends or family. So when it comes to spending time with your favourite people, why settle for anything less than the best?

The Bay Horse is Yorkshire’s best-kept secret. Since the Bay Horse arrived in Cherry Burton, its character, appearance and style have had a complete turnaround, and all for the better. The decor is simple, rustic and traditional. With an open fire to relax in front of, chairs of leather and tartan, arriving at the Bay Horse feels like you have wandered into an old friend’s new living room. The menu is a spectrum of cultures and flavours that push the boat out, while being unpretentious and comforting. You will find taste of the Mediterranean, China and Portugal woven into pub grub classics. There is an array of locally sourced meats and fish finely tuned with subtle herbs and spices with Yorkshire-picked fruits and veg. You might think words such as “gourmet” and “gastro” have been given a bad name.

Maybe there are too many chefs who get carried away with what’s going to be on your plate, without delivering the beef to properly hit the spot. But forget about those. The Bay Horse has a menu that’s affordable, bright and British. As Landlord Mark Dallison puts it, they deliver gastro-quality meals without the astronomical prices. Our menu has something for everyone including vegetarian options, children’s meals and our “lite bites” dishes under 500 calories! We welcome bookings and recommend that large parties do check in advance, but we will always try our best to accommodate you at any time.

FOOD SERVED:

We serve food daily from twelve o’clock (except Tuesday from 15:30). We also welcome dogs between the hours of 12:00 and 18:00 each day.

The Priory Inn 121 Priory Road, Hull, HU5 5RY Tel: 01482 352011

A popular family-friendly pub has been given a new lease of life under the running of a new landlord. The Priory Inn, in Hull’s Priory Road, was taken over by Martin Mell a year ago and he has wasted no time in making changes. A refurbishment - which has been completed outside and in - has made the venue a welcoming space to enjoy a pint or a plateful of delicious food. It features pub classics that will suit all tastes, such as juicy burgers, megamixed grills, and nicely spiced curries. There is even a kebab to tempt the tastebuds and with great value prices and a children’s menu, why not have a break from the cooking and treat the whole family?

With a lovely beer garden, The Priory is also the perfect choice for relaxing with a chilled glass of wine or a cold beer on sunny days. For entertainment, the Priory has plenty going on too. There are regular quiz and open mic nights and big screens where you can catch all the big sporting events of the season as pool tables and darts. Whether you’re a regular or have never been, you can expect a warm welcome from Martin and his team who look forward to continuing The Priory’s important role as a proper community pub.

The Old House Bistro The Old House Bistro, 5 Scale Lane, Hull. Tel: 01482 210253 www.oldhousehull.co.uk

FOR top quality food served in quirky surroundings, The Old House Bistro is an unbeatable choice. Located in Hull’s oldest domestic building - which dates back to the 15th Century - it’s a great place to drink or dine. Just waiting to be discovered down the cobbled street of Scale Lane in the city’s beautiful Old Town, the menu here is brought to guests by Shoot the Bull. The award-winning outfit, which started as a highly-rated street food operation, has a permanent residency at the Bistro. Led by chef Chris Harrison, who has worked at leading restaurants such as Heston Blumenthal’s The Fat Duck and The Hand and Flowers - the only two Michelin star pub in the world - it has a menu that is not to be missed. Choose from mouth-watering options like Yorkshire Wagyu steak and chips, 36 hour

cooked pork belly, or wild garlic risotto. There is also a tempting selection of gourmet burgers, all served with beef dripping ‘cracked’ fries and slaw. Just make sure you leave room for desserts such as sticky toffee pudding, rhubarb and custard and peanut butter, mint or chocolate orange brownies. IT’S been a popular village pub for years and now The Ferguson Fawsitt Arms in Walkington has a fresh new look and menu to tempt locals and visitors alike. A refurbishment has seen the decor given a modern, relaxing feel with a cosy double-sided log burner in the bar area to warm-up by on chilly winter, or wet summer evenings. The revamp has also seen the introduction of Eliza’s coffee shop which is open throughout the day for breakfast and for lighter bites at lunchtime. Their coffee is blended specially for them and is a wonderful accompaniment to the homemade sweet treats. All the food at the Ferguson Fawsitt is homemade on site. Even the pub’s salmon and mackerel is smoked in-house. One of the most popular dishes served is the Ocean Platter, which includes plaice goujons, crayfish cocktail and homemade fishcakes. The desserts, again all homemade, are a must and worthy of a try. Other favourites include the Cajun chicken Caesar salad and the side order of triple-cooked chips is spot on for the warmer months.
