WELCOME

HSS 2017 4

WELCOME TO YOUR FESTIVAL It’s that time of year again and Humber Street Sesh organiser Mark Page is ready to party at the sixth annual festival

W

elcome to the sixth Humber Street Sesh Festival. As former Housemartin, Fatboy Slim once sang “We’ve come a long long way together.” This one day event of epic proportions has unquestionably captivated the city over the last five years, and has become a flagship event for this year’s Hull 2017 celebrations. On Saturday 5th August, we plan to showcase the very best emerging talent from the region and afar, with 32,000 expected to attend. Now recognized within the industry as the UK’s largest unsigned music festival, having been successfully chosen as Yorkshire’s No.1 Grassroots Festival, Humber Street Sesh has become synonymous with the very best up and coming bands and acts in the UK. Alongside 200+ acts performing over one day, we see the return of the surreal Silent Disco, the Hip Hop Amphitheatre, Residents Association Disco Tent, Original Brew and Squarewaves. We’re also delighted to welcome back the Funkywormhole Sound System to the festival, and our fantastic Family Area on the old Victorian Pier which will include a Youth Stage, Face painting, Scrapstore and Skate Park, featuring Team Extreme. Street food will be abundant, alongside street markets and an exciting arts programme, featuring graffiti artists and street performers. None of this would be possible without the generous support we’ve received from our festival partners and sponsors this year, most notably The University of Hull who are our wristband and main stage sponsors.

Please take note of all our partners and sponsors on our stage pages, without them we wouldn’t be able to put on such an amazing event for the city. We give thanks to Hull City Council and Hull 2017 for their guidance and support throughout our planning for this year’s festival, and to all relevant authorities who assist us in providing a safe and enjoyable environment. This must also be extended to all the businesses and residents of the marina who work alongside us. We’re delighted to welcome back the BBC Introducing Humberside team, as well as the inspirational Strummerville organization, who with the support of Doc Martens will take over the city’s favourite artspace, FRuiT on Humber Street. We’ve added a new stage to the Festival, the Everyone Back to Ours Stage, with The Deep acting as an iconic backdrop. This stage has been kindly supported by Hull2017 and mirrors the city’s ambition to engage with the music industry more than ever before. We’re also partnering up with 53 Degrees North, a new ‘Music Week’ due

to take place in Hull, the week leading up to Humber Street Sesh, where some of the country’s most knowledgeable professionals and mentors will be invited to Hull. We said from the start, that Humber Street Sesh was a ‘Festival for The People by the People’ and that still rings true now in 2017. Our Production team has grown year on year, and we thank all involved for their passion and commitment. We also thank our media partners, The Hull Daily Mail who have supported us from year one, and for the fourth-year running have helped us put this fantastic festival programme together. Our festival design has been provided by H&H with their Graphic Designer Joseph Cox leading the way with his superb brand design, and our first-class website is testament to the skill of Ian Cooper from The Missing Dimension. New for 2017, we’re offering everyone the chance to upload our exciting festival mobile app for FREE, which has been kindly supported by KLM and Humberside Airports which will allow everyone the chance to see what’s on offer on the day. We’ve been saying for years that Hull is a city of culture and with the UK title bestowed upon us for 2017, this is our time. A time to show off, a time to change perceptions about Hull and a time to celebrate. At Humber Street Sesh this summer, we intend to do this in spades. ‘Respect Your Sesh’ so we can repeat it year on year. Thank you for all your support over the years. We are Hull. We are one.

Martin Green talks us through the uniquness of the Humber Sesh

T

he Humber Street Sesh is a festival that like American Chip Spice, Dead Bod or The Housemartins can only ever have been created in Hull. It is the product of the decade-long mission by its founder Mak Page to support the very best emerging talent from the city and beyond, an almost religious calling whose church is at The Polar Bear and for the last 14 years he has been its high priest holding service every Tuesday night. This year Humber Street Sesh gives a platform to exciting artists like LIFE, The Hubbards, Jack Conman, Chambers and Chiedu Oraka, allowing them to follow in the footsteps of Hull legends such as The Housemartins, The Paddingtons, Fine Young Cannibals, Everything but the Girl and The Beautiful South. The fact that Hull can take a weekly music night like the Sesh and support it to the extent that you have an annual festival drawing crowds of 40,000 is not only remarkable, it also highlights the fact that Hull is a place of opportunity where creatives are supported and encouraged. The Sesh has built the stage and the invitation to play in front of thousands is ger a pipe dream,, it is a reality ge y for no longer DIVIDIUM

anybody with the talent and ambition. One rule to get the most out the Sesh can be applied to the rest of the arts and events programme happening through Hull in 2017 - take a risk and go with your gut. You may not have heard of them before but, nine times out of 10, once you hear them you’ll be hooked. It’s not an overstatement to say The Humber Street Sesh is the largest unsigned and emerging talent urban music festival in the UK - there is nothing else like it. Humber Street Sesh is no longer the new kid on the block, it is gaining national recognition for creating something very special and this is something Hull should be rightfully proud of. Hull 2017 is working with Humber Street Sesh on supporting a number of initiatives that will help cement the festival as a key event for artist, industry and audience, not just in Hull but beyond. The ‘Everyone Back To Ours’ stage is at the heart of that, a stage that embodies the ambition of Mak’s weekly expeditions into the best new music. It will invite the best of the rest of the UK to Hull, it is a place to celebrate the independent scenes of other towns and cities, with a different focus each year it KID TRENC

H

will feel like a home from home showcasing the type of artist that shares the ethos of Humber Street Sesh’s founding principles. This year talented musicians will be travelling the length and breadth of the country to be a part of this special event. This includes Kagoule from Nottingham, Polo from York, Indigo Velvet from Edinburgh and, probably travelling the furthest to be part of the Sesh experience, Kid Trench from Northern Ireland. It’s a tired cliché but for once it rings true - this is where you will see the next big thing. Alongside the ever-expanding ambitions of what is quite simply a storming live music festival, there are events such as the 53 Degrees North Conference taking place at Hull Truck over the few days preceding Humber Street Sesh, a great example of Hull-based organisations such as The Warren and HPSS coming together to provide another great music event for the city. Humber Street Sesh falls at the halfway stage of what has been an incredible year and, like Hull 2017, I’m sure the Sesh story still has many more am amazing memories to make.

IT’S NOT AN OVERSTATEMENT TO SAY OV THE HUMBER STREET SESH IS THE T LARGEST UNSIGNED AND AN EMERGING TALENT URBAN URB MUSIC FESTIVAL IN THE UK - THERE IS NOTHING ELSE LIKE IT.

Everyone Back to Ours Humber Street Sesh looks beyond its backyard

to national emerging talent – showcased on EBTO

H

umber Street Sesh is fast becoming known as the country’s largest festival for unsigned talent, most notably from this region. New this year, the EBTO stage will play host to some of the very best emerging acts from other cities across the UK and headlined by Hull’s very own Vulgarians. A BBC Introducing appearance at Great Escape, as well as an acclaimed 2nd EP under their belt, along with a UK tour and valued airtime on the nationals and regionals throughout 2017, Vulgarians have been flying the flag for the city. With HMLTD, TRAAMS, WEIRDS, and WYTCHES support slots in the bag, we believe they’ve more than earned their place as this year’s headliners to our debut Industry engagement stage.

KAGOULE EBTO Guests include the highly rated Kagoule from Nottingham, alongside the likes of Leeds favourites Post War Glamour Girls, Edinburgh’s Indigo Velvet and Manchester’s hotly tipped False Advertising. There’s also a return to Hull for Sesh regulars Thee Deadtime Philharmonic from Derby and the incredible Coquin Migale from Newcastle. For the full line up please visit the festival website, humberstreetsesh.co.uk.

WE WANT TO SHOW OFF HUMBER STREET SESH AND OUR MUSIC SCENE TO THE WORLD The whole idea is to attract attention from outside the city, change perceptions, showcase our talent and engage with industry. The EBTO stage has been cultivated by Mark Page and Daniel Mawer, who over the past 15 years, have nurtured relationships with other city’s bands along with labels, promoters, agents, venues and media, by inviting them to the weekly Tuesday night Sesh at Polar Bear on Springbank, Hull. Mark Page said, ‘EBTO is about connecting and widening opportunity. The idea is to engage more outside of Hull, forge links and create mutually beneficial relationships. As well as furthering our reputation as a go-to festival for emerging talent, our ultimate hope is that by dedicating a stage to industry engagement we will provide all involved in Hull’s music scene wider opportunities and recognition.” The Sesh has shared a great relationship with BBC Introducing Humberside throughout it’s 15 years and has also worked closely and been in awe of the amazing work done by the Warren. With close bonds between other promoters and venues already forged, Humber Street Sesh is excited about the forthcoming 53 Degrees North Music Week that has been supported by Hull2017 and will take place the week leading up to the Festival. With leading

Thee Deadtime Philharmonic music figures and organisations booked in to lead conferences and workshops, we’re hoping to invite all down on Hull Marina for our unique showcase. It’s no wonder, Mark Page was voted Yorkshire Grassroots Outstanding Promoter of the year 2016 for a second time. It’s a labour of love to him. He is incredibly proud of the music scene in Hull and feels very privileged to be able to provide a platform for the massive talent in the city. “We want to show off Humber Street Sesh and our music scene to the world and what better way than to invite some of the industry big hitters to come along and see for themselves. We honestly think they'll be impressed.” Hull is undoubtedly a friendly city, nowhere more so than at Humber Street Sesh, referred to by Hull2017 CEO Martin Green as “capturing the heart and soul of Hull”. The festival unites the community and now with the EBTO Stage, we have the chance to reach out to our creative brothers and sisters from across the country. Humber Street Sesh is a flagship event in this year’s city of culture calendar, and we are delighted and thankful to Hull2017 for their support of this stage, which is outward looking and forward thinking. So our cry is

‘Everyone Back To Ours’, and with true Hull hospitality let us welcome our guests and give a good account of ourselves.

Returning to perform as headliners on the University of Hull main stage, LIFE talk to Craig Jones about their successful year so far

F

lying the flag for Hull’s music scene are LIFE who will be headlining Humber Street Sesh following the release of their debut album. LIFE offer everything you could possibly want from an artist. They are politically astute, angry, intelligent, gritty and air-punchingly brilliant. This year has been a huge one for the act, which features members Mez, Loz, Mick and Stew. Not only will they be taking to the stage at festivals such as Leeds, Truck and Boardmasters they also released their first record, Popular Music, earlier this summer. The record has earned rave reviews and will help to propel the up-and-coming group. “Getting our debut album out has been a two year whirlwind journey that has seen us go all over Europe, visit America and play to sold out 3000 cap venues in the UK,” Mez said. “We have had an incredible time and the album is the product of this.

“We have a strong DIY ethos which has meant all our victories have felt so much more special as everything about LIFE has been self-managed and owned from within so the fact the album is now getting praised all over the radio and in the media makes us feel alive.” Rock magazine, Kerrang, gave LIFE four stars while the Guardian has described the band as brilliant. Of course, headlining a festival, in their home city, as big as Humber Street Sesh is incredibly satisfying for the band. Mez said: “LIFE would play anywhere on this bill. For us, Humber Street Sesh is about the community and its creatives as a whole not the billing. “That said, headlining will mean a lot to us given our love for the city and how the city has shaped our music.” LIFE will be topping the University of Hull main stage at 10.15pm.

FRONTEERS Craig Jones takes a look at headliners of the BBC Introducing Humberside stage, local band Fronteers

H

aving formed back in just 2014 it has been a whirlwind couple of years for Fronteers. The Hull band, who consist of Andy Towse, James Taylor, Ellis Keogh and Lloyd Tuton, will be headlining Humber Street Sesh’s BBC Introducing Humberside Stage. Having risen through the ranks, Fronteers, have received support from national BBC stalwarts Huw Stephens, Steve Lamacq and Janice Long. They have also featured on indie radio station Radio X with big things expected for the future. There’s hints of Oasis and Arctic Monkeys in the sound of the band who are as hard-working as they come. Ahead of Radio 1’s Big Weekend at Burton Constable Hall, Fronteers, played at the BBC Introducing Showcase which took place at Ablemarle Music Centre. Their EPs Nothing’s Ever That Simple and Streets We’re Born in capture the group’s youthful exuberance and swagger. They’re a confident group and they have every right to be.

Known for their tireless work touring in the city and in nearby cities Fronteers are making quite a name for themselves. They were playing in foreign climes earlier this summer after performing in Germany. They took to social media to announce their Humber Street Sesh headline performance much to the delight of their fans. For those new to the band, Fronteers, back catalogue includes tacks such as Full Moon, It’s Up To Me Now and Neon Tribe. Their tracks are available at: www.soundcloud.com/fronteers for anyone who fancies having a quick listen ahead of their set. Fronteers will be playing at 10.30pm on the BBC Introducing Humberside Stage at Humber Street Sesh. We would like to thank BP for their continued support of Humber Street Sesh. BP will feature across the Smokehouse Courtyard in front of the BBC Introducing Humberside Stage celebrating 50 years in the city at Saltend.

MAKE ME SMILE Hannah Robinson talkss with Patrick Gradwell about the Mick Ronson Foundation

H

ull has a fantastically rich history of popular music. From David Whitfield‘s million selling records in the 1950s to the recent international success of Calum Scott, the city has nurtured a terrific array of musical talent. None more than Mick Ronson, legendary guitarist, producer and arranger whose glittering career included David Bowie’s Spiders From Mars band, the recording of Lou Reed’s Transformer album and work with Bob Dylan on Hard Rain.

Recently Hull has paid tribute to Ronson with memorials in East Park and with concerts held at Hull City Hall. And now his legacy will help to support young talented musicians in the Hull region through the collaboration of the Mick Ronson Foundation and Hull College Music. The MRF, a charity established by Ronson’s daughter Lisa, famed songwriter Steve Harley and local promoter Gary Marks are working with Craig Steer and Patrick Gradwell at Hull College to offer financial backing to local musicians in need of initial investment. To launch this working project, and in association with Humber Street Sesh, Hull College Music are releasing a charity single – with all proceeds going to the Mick Ronson Foundation. Through kind permission of Steve Harley a new

version of his classic hit Make Me Smile (Come up and See Me) will be recorded and produced by Hull College’s student alumni, many of whom are featured on the main stages of this year’s Humber Street Sesh. The production event is in itself a bit special – the whole thing from start to finish will take place over a 24 hour period on July 5. Pop in to the Hull College Music Pop-Up Studio marquee at Humber Street Sesh to see what went on during the recording of Make Me Smile 2017 and for details on how to download the track on iTunes.

‘This is a fantastic opportunity; many of our students have real talent but lack the backing to move forward in their careers. The Mick Ronson Foundation bursaries will bridge that gap through the support of new equipment, training and production costs. We are very excited to work with the MRF to support Hull’s next generation of musicians’.

A

major Hull music project, backed by a foundation in memory of The Clash frontman Joe Strummer, is giving Hull’s young people a voice. Tutors and counsellors from The Warren embarked on the Three Minute Heroes project with more than 100 young people attending schools in Hull and the East Riding getting involved in the initiative from the Joe Strummer Foundation and Hull City Council. JJ Tatten, manager of The Warren Youth Project, said: "This brilliant initiative gives young people a truly authentic voice that simply asks the adult world to really listen to them. "It isn't somebody's interpretation of what's bothering them – it is actually their own words. The support we've had from the community of Hull to make this happen has been incredible."

The Warren launched the music project to encourage young people to talk openly and honestly about their mental health so friends, parents, families, teachers and health professionals knew what was bothering them and could do something to help. Expressing their feelings in the form of song lyrics, their words, completely unchanged, were taken by Hull bands including Quicksilver Kings, the Fronteers and La Bete Blooms to produce an album featuring around 15 songs. The album, Three Minute Heroes, went on sale back in March. As well as financial support from the foundation, the project has also been supported by Hull City Council's Headstart Hull programme. Emma Wilkinson, manager of the Warren's Counselling Service, said the young people used song lyrics as a creative outlet to express their thoughts and emotions.

She said: "It's a fantastic way for young people to get their thoughts and feelings out there in a powerfully creative way that is good for their mental health and is totally on their terms." Stew Baxter, manager of Warren Records, said: "The depth of talent and compassion in this city's creative community is simply inspiring – and Three Minute Heroes is proof of that.

BIG

THINK

Craig Jones speaks with art director Isabelle Tracy about the Think Big! initative

I

sabelle Tracy, Arts Director of Humber Street Sesh tells us how it isn’t just creative music we can expect at Humber Street Sesh through the Think Big! Initiative. “From its beginning as a crowdfunded leap of faith, to its position as the city’s main showcase of home-grown talent, Humber Street Sesh has always been about celebrating and developing emerging artists. “We are ambitious for Hull’s young people, musicians, photographers and visual artists, and so for 2017, we set ourselves a new challenge, which was to start a new approach to arts programming, in partnership with Hull School of Art and Design, to Think Big! over the next two years about what visual artists in Hull can be and do. “I think the comparison with musicians is an important one. Let’s not forget, that first Humber Street Sesh in 2012 was a celebration of 10 years of The Sesh providing a showcase for local and emerging musicians. “Because that showcase was there, it helped to grow the number of bands that were gigging on a regular basis, because there was a night happening every week where you could go out and reach an audience, even when you were still

figuring out what you were doing.” “By the time we launched Humber Street Sesh in 2012, Mak as Festival Director, had 160 local bands to programme in one day. That number has grown to over 200, and six years later, we’re just beginning to see some of those bands making an impact on the national stage. “We want to see the same thing happening with new and emerging visual artists, but their situation isn’t the same, because they don’t have so many opportunities to get their work out in front of an audience. So we’re really still just at the beginning compared to the work with musicians. “By programming visual arts at Humber Street Sesh, they get to reach an audience of 32,000 people, many of whom are probably only just beginning to engage with visual arts in the same way that they do with music. “We’ve commissioned artists through a range of funding in the past, from Hull

City Council, Roots and Wings, and direct from Arts Council England through programmers Michele Davy and Leanne Cloudsdale, and this year we wanted to specifically focus on new and emerging artists through a programme called Think Big!

“Think Big! is about ideas, concepts, materials, making and scale – what would you do if you could do it on a more ambitious scale? “There are some elements that are always going to be part of Humber Street Sesh – the graffiti, street artists painting live at the festival, photography – they’re part of our DNA. It wouldn’t be Humber Street Sesh without them. “But we’re also branching out into some new areas – street sculpture, 3-D work and light installations – Thinking Big about using as much of the floorspace and wallspace that we can.” “It feels a lot like it did 6 years ago, when we first launched Humber Street Sesh – exciting, a bit scary, and limited only by the artists imagination on the day!”

E

ver since the beginning, The Joe Strummer Foundation has always aimed to provide opportunities to musicians and support to projects around the world that create empowerment through music. Part of their manifesto is to promote, improve and advance the arts, including music, for the public benefit including by the presentation of exhibitions, public events and concerts. And, that is the reason they are supporting Humber Street Sesh 2017. Jamie Webb, of Joe Strummer Foundation, said: “It’s an honour to be involved in such an incredible event, we’ve got some great bands playing our Strummerville Stage and it’s all down to Mark Page’s drive, passion and love for music. We’re proud supporters, to say the least. “We are proud to be once again supporting Humber Street Sesh, it’s more than an awesome festival, it’s a labour of love. It’s organised by the fine folks of Hull, it promotes the fine

local music, it’s firmly placing Hull on the cultural map for the country as a whole and above all else it’s a celebration of music, you know, that force that unites us in times of need.” Acts including Foolish Atoms, Billionaire, Strange Bones and Kingmaker will be performing at Humber Street Sesh’s Strummerville Stage. The performance area is being sponsored by Dr Martens at this year’s Humber Street Sesh. The foundation was set up in 2003 following the death of The Clash frontman Joe Strummer. bands to watch 1. LIFE There was only one band that could start off this list, Garage, punk, DIY four-piece LIFE headline this year's Main Stage. Only a month after headlining the BBC Introducing Stage at last year's Humber Street Sesh, The band supported Slaves on their Hull date of a UK tour, the Kent duo loved them so much they took Life on their next tour with them. From there the band only got busier, playing in Austin Texas for SXSW festival, including a headline slot, closing the festival on the British Music Embassy stage. Stand out performances since include Live at Leeds, Hit The North, Handmade Festival, The Great Escape along with festival dates across Europe, a Maide Vale session on Radio 1, and performing at Radio 1’s big Weekend. 2. THE HUBBARDS Undoubtedly one of Hull's finest acts, The Hubbard's have received plenty of accolades over recent years for writing some of the catchiest singles our city's ever produced. Since their performance last year, the band have toured their E.P ‘Cold Cut’ across England, sold out their hometown show at Fruit, headlined gigs in Manchester and London, and made appearances at Ramsbottom Festival, Dot To Dot, Meet The North and The Great Escape Festival.

FATHERSON

3. FATHERSON Once upon a time, fresh faced Scottish four piece Fatherson made their first visit to England to play their first show outside of Scotland. They visited The Sesh, and played to a clutch of people who loved every minute of their performance. Over five years later, the band are returning to us, on the Main Stage. 4. CHIEDU ORAKA Standing at 6ft 7in and only getting taller, Chiedu Oraka fronts a new era of Hull urban music. Since last year’s performance Chiedu's single 'Flex' has received 100,000 Spotify plays, as he and contemporary Deezkid tear up stages of all sizes, Chiedu’s never been afraid to play bills designed for indie rock bands, and never been afraid of hosting his own shows and incite stage invasion after stage invasion, including a raucous show at The Sesh earlier this year.

5. KING NO-ONE Clash Magazine described King No-One as ‘Fizzing hooks, buoyant energy and tonnes of charm’ and we’ve seen plenty of that over the years from such an exciting band. Taking things back to basics King No-One have busked the streets of England on a weekly basis for years, gaining a dedicated fan base across the UK, constantly touring, constantly selling out venues, momentum is with the indie four piece and they'll be heading to Humber Street Sesh with a Leeds And Reading NME stage slot awaiting them. Catch them at 9.35pm on The Main Stage.

KING NO-ONE

CHIEDU ORAKA 6.COQUIN MIGALE The festivals application process began last year, and it means the production team get to find amazing new bands applying to play the festival from across the world. Coquin Migale are one of these acts, the Newcastle four piece were too good to resist, having performed at Leeds and Reading last year, and signed to Fierce Panda, we can’t wait to see them on the All Back To Ours Stage at 6.20pm.

COQUIN MIGALE 7. EMBRS One of Hull's newest acts Embrs grace the Main Stage at 1.05pm. Emily Moulton has long been one of the city's finest singer songwriters, with her gorgeous debut EP making her one of the most sought-after Hull performers, her new project is a collaboration with another familiar face, John Copley, with new recordings ready to go, and a band beginning to form, we're over the moon to bring an act to the festival who show such great early promise for haunting atmospheric electronic music.

With new album 'Nothing to Lose' released earlier this year, the sludgemakers have been busy touring England as the making of another album is being rumoured. With members of the band involved in Hull Noise Collective, the band’s efforts bring in great diverse talent from all over the country to play in Hull, further developing the city's industry links, the lads are

9. KATIE SPENCER For all the folk heads out there, Katie Spencer is a solo musician whose live performance is frankly world affirming. Having recently released her EP 'Good Morning Sky' only a couple of months ago, it's an embodiment of Katie's hard work, spirituality and ear for amazing melodies. Armed with a set full of belting four-minute chorus fuelled songs, poetic, violent and profound lead singer Ryan has been belting his vocals out with the band across the UK, the band becoming Hull's poster boys and girls for alternative rock music.

THE SESH

Hannah Robinson looks at how the Sesh was born and the impact it’s had on the Hull music scene

A

decade and a half ago, Mark Page set up The Sesh to provide a regular stage for local bands to play. It was a platform that was severely lacking in the city at that time, with only the famous New Adelphi Club offering regular support for local musicians. Mak, as he’s known, was helped initially by local musicians Martin Knight (The Favours) and then by Digsy (59 Violets) and latterly with John Copley (Goodnight Ohio), with them all booking bands for the night up to around 2015. The night began its residency, on Tuesdays at The Linnet & Lark in Princes Avenue, and quickly became a frequent gig for local bands to play, providing the public with three bands to watch week in week out, free of charge, along with a club night (Grapevine) to go to for afters. As the noughties indie movement began to take shape, a new generation of musicians made The Sesh their home and the stage in Hull to play, solidifying its status as a popular go to event for Hull’s creatives. The night also mixed up the styles and provided a stage for acoustic artists, dance acts, hip hop musicians, as well as rock and metal bands. The socialising aspect of The Sesh has always been key to its popularity, the night was, and still is frequently visited by local journalists, photographers, videographers, sound engineers and musicians alike, who come to watch the bands, or have a drink on a school night surrounded by like-minded people. Sometimes even the odd indie celebrity pops in, back in the noughties it would be model Agyness Deyn or American anti-folk hero Adam Green, more recently bands like The Mystery Jets and Beans On Toast. On its tenth year anniversary

The Sesh decided to celebrate by hosting a one day event on Hull’s Marina. With an eight-week time scale to pull the event off, Mak created ‘Humber Street Sesh’ with help from Dave Mays and the Welly/Fruit team, and billed a line-up of famous cult Hull bands from The Sesh’s past and present, to play out on Hull’s Marina. The festival’s success was staggering and this urged Mak on to make it a yearly event making The Humber Street Sesh its own entity, with 32,000 people in attendance each year. Few of the festival attendees know that this massive day out for Hull’s people began thanks to the weekly free entry Sesh nights, that still provides the festivals line up with new music every year. The key objective of 2017, is to try and encourage more from the Festival to engage with the regular live music nights in the city throughout the year, whilst putting Hull on the music map nationally. In September 2015, The Sesh moved from The Linnet and Lark to The Polar Bear Pub on Spring Bank. It was a match made in heaven, with The Polar Bear’s glittering history of live music, the newly refurbished pub, which is owned by The Fruit and Welly team, soon took the night to new levels with Daniel Mawer getting involved to help book bands. With Dan, lead singer of La Bete

Mark Page

32,000 people in attendance each year

Blooms on board, assisted by Joe Hubbard (Fruit/Welly Booker), the night has attracted bands from across the world, most notably Plague Vendor from California and Fatherson from Dundee. Every week, the night hosts three bands, with two local artists sandwiching a band from further afield. This means the weekly event constantly provides an audience with new faces, whether it’s a local band of any particular genre, or an act that they’d never seen before who are being introduced to Hull and its fantastic music scene. This helps our music scene engage with the outside industry, cementing The Sesh as a vital organ in Hull’s rich musical tapestry. For more information on The Sesh visit... theseshhull.co.uk

Hannah Robinson talks with Adam Brodie about showing off what the city has to offer

H

umber Street is now a glittering example of what Hull can do when it really puts its mind to something. From rooftop bars to high-class Indian fare and gin bars to award-winning music venues, it is hard to imagine what the street once was. Making the most of one of these new spaces during Humber Street Sesh is Adam Brodie and Jody McKenna’s Speakeasy. Speakeasy hosts weekly music events in the city and also spreads its wings to the outreaches of York, Leeds and beyond, bringing unsigned acts to the fore. Now taking over immesnely popular restaurant Butler Whites for this year’s festival, Adam wants to show off what the city has to offer. Adam said: “What Warren Records and mark Page do for this city is incredible. I think without, 90 per cent of the city’s bands wouldn’t have the audience they do. “But these guys get nothing in return for their effort in the realms of money and profit, and we need to get some sponsorship to keep festivals and events like this going before they decided they are not worth doing anymore.

“Humber Street Sesh does have the potential to be huge. I think it already rivals Tramlines in Sheffield, but we need to protect the cornerstones of Hull’s music scene first.” And protecting Hull’s music scene seems to be just what Adam is doing this year. Last year’s Speakeasy line-up saw an out-of-town headliner in the form of Bristol-based Fraser Anderson, with the team wanting to show off Hull to visiting acts. However, this year’s headline is Hull’s very own The Quicksilver Kings, as well as a line-up consisting of Crooked Weather, The Happy Endings, Gracie Falls and Jack Conman. With a surge in popularity for this year’s event in the realms of sponsorship support and ticket sales, and it being Hull’s City of Culture year, Adam hopes one day the festival could stretch to another day of musical magic. “I think it would bring a lot to the city in regards to visitors needing accommodation and places to eat and drink,” he said. “But we do need to secure a good future for our music first. We need more diversity with urban acts and women being given a greater chance to get into music.”

We as a city need to support organisers like Mark and get more involved in the city’s music scene before it is too late.

LIVE WIRES OF HUMBER STREET SESH SquareWaves: The Live Wires of Humber Street Sesh Back with the beat of electronic, Joe Cox

W

e’re so excited to be back at Humber Street Sesh for the third year with another lineup of live electronic and dance music for all different tastes. Hull has had its fair share of electronic greats and pioneers through the years. Experimental electronic leaders Throbbing Gristle, who formed in Hull in the 70s and went on to influence everyone from Aphex Twin to Radiohead. In the 80s, composer Rob Hubbard, soundtracked many happy hours of gaming on the Commodore 65. A decade later, Fila Brazillia crafted their downtempo electronica in the city in the 90s - member Steve Cobby can still be found today making great electronic music, often with writer Russ Litten. And even today the city is rich with exciting electronic and dance music - you’ve just got to know where to look. SquareWaves is a home for electronic thinkers like this. Techno to ambient, jazz and drum n bass, electronic music that is internationally popular, but often can find it difficult to break out of bedroom studios or find a place on local live music scenes in the early days. In Hull, this kind of music is going on all over the city. Find it in home studios, on Love Our Records, at performances at Ground Gallery, or acts on Tegleg, Mola Mola, the Adult Teeth Recording Company and more. We set out to join the dots between the different acts, labels and promoters,

creating a network where electronic musicians can discover and support each other. We started with the SquareWaves compilation in 2014, which brought together producers and was sold to raise money for RED Gallery, who had lost funding. We went down to FRüIT a couple of days after the release for Something Entirely Different’s Art and Beer night. There, acts from the compilation release played an improvised set of electronic music together. Many of us hadn’t even met before, musicians dropped in and out of the mix, sometimes just two were playing, other times all five. It worked fantastically. SquareWaves acts have been jamming monthly ever since, with shifting lineups introducing new artists along the way. All jams are recorded with the best cuts going online to create a collection of improvised electronic music, accessible for free. Members of the collective have supported international artists in the city, collaborated on new projects, formed new bands and discovered new opportunities. It’s all about community, supporting each other and making it happen. More recently, we’ve teamed up with Hull Uni and played with their students as part of their degrees, performed as part of Hull UK City of Culture’s celebration of COUM Transmissions and spent the day making our improvised electronic music at Radio 1’s Academy.

Visitors to our tent can expect our Humber Street Sesh lineup to be bigger and more eclectic than ever. From full on live techno and drum n bass to electronic infused indie and folk and the sounds of vintage horror and science fiction soundtracks.

The next year already looks to be another great year for SquareWaves and electronic music in Hull, find us on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram to stay in the loop.

NO NOTHINGS

PILLGRINNS

OCTOPUS

POLO

Octopus are a powerful blues/grunge group based in Yorkshire. Pulling on sounds from 90s grunge they model their sound with influences from Jack White, Wolfmother and Pearl Jam.

Yorkshire outfit Polo might hail from Leeds, but the band's glacial atmospherics and lush, r'n'b-tinged pop are an ethereal world away from the spit'n'sawdust DIY scene that the city's best known for.

One of the coolest guys around with one of the most unique record collections in the UK and Europe. Runs his own night in Stroud, regular guest DJ in Barcelona and New York. The Real Deal for sure. For this set Pavlos will be playing a rare mix of Latin 45's that you are guaranteed not to hear anywhere else
