Uniting businesses on both sides of Humber quickly and easily A

YEAR on and we are celebrating the first anniversary of Humberbusiness.com – your daily port of call for all things business across the Humber estuary. While uncertainty may remain about the future of the political make-up of our area, one thing is certain and that is the power and might of the Humber as an industrial strength. Whatever the future holds, there is no doubt that both north and south banks are intrinsically linked. They share the vital waterway on which our wealth has grown and leaders on both sides are united in their passion and determination to look, with optimism, at the future potential of wind energy, while ensuring our traditional businesses and industrial heartlands are supported. It was with the above in mind, that the teams within our three media outlets, Hull, Grimsby and Scunthorpe, recognised the need to unite both sides of the Humber with a business news and commercial website that embraced new technology and used innovative digital solutions to provide thousands of readers with the only daily service of its kind – not only in this region, but in the UK. After months of planning and discussions with our supporters and partners, to whom we are very grateful, the dream of humberbusiness.com became a reality ... and it has not looked back. It has one main focus – to connect all our Humber businesses quickly and easily, to keep them up-to-date with the very latest news across both banks and to facilitate the ease in which they can do business and talk to each other, with information on events and vital advice. Hull, Grimsby and Scunthorpe have their very own news sections where daily information is uploaded and we have separate sections for the individual business sectors as we recognised that those in their own sphere of

Exciting times as confidence grows A

s 2017 begins, I’m pleased to look back on last year as one of growing confidence and reputation in North East Lincolnshire. We’ve been recognised nationally for some brilliant things that happened in the borough, adding to the growing confidence in the area, and the council, to deliver on its promises of building a stronger economy and stronger communities. Our credentials as a key part of the Energy Estuary were cemented with the Government announcement of potentially the world’s largest

Creating confidence to deliver and support a stronger economy and stronger communities has been a golden thread running through the council’s work for a number of years. Councillor Ray Oxby offshore wind farm, Hornsea Project Two, which will consist of 300 turbines, 90km off the coast. And in the heart of that long-term operation will be Dong Energy, who, based in Grimsby, will be working with us to develop local training to support this operation. In Grimsby town centre, you can’t fail to have noticed the work that’s

By Councillor Ray Oxby, leader, North East Lincolnshire Council been going on, and we thank our residents and businesses for putting up with this. The developments, including the £4 million Cartergate office development now occupied by Wilkin Chapman, as well as the refresh of Victoria, Bethlehem and Osborne Streets has brought a major uplift to the look of the town centre. Our future plans for Grimsby and Cleethorpes are now being worked through and this year, we look forward to exciting announcements about major developments. In Cleethorpes, unfortunately, Pleasure Island closed its doors for the final time, but we are working with the landowner on the future for the site. I can’t look back on 2016 without some recognition for the events we’ve held. Firstly, and most impressively, the national Armed Forces Day event in June. Developed over a year of working with our military colleagues, Cleethorpes held the biggest event in one weekend I’ve ever seen. With around 180,000 attending on the Saturday, I’ll never forget the sight of our troops and veterans proudly marching through our streets. The inaugural Great Grimsby 10K run, sponsored by Dong Energy, was a fantastic success and we already have over 2,000 runners signed up for this year. These were just a couple of the many events we host through the year in our towns, but two, I’m sure you’ll agree, made 2016 just that bit special. The teams that put these types of events together work very hard in the background, and my thanks goes out

to them. Our support for small businesses continues. Small businesses across North East Lincolnshire worked with the council and took to social media, and in some case, the streets, to promote themselves for Small Business Saturday this year. And this year, Sea View Street in Cleethorpes was nominated and got to

the final three of the Coastal Community category of the Great British High Street Awards, selected from 900 nominations over all the categories. With reports of additional footfall and traders working together for a common cause, it’s been a hugely worthwhile experience – well done to all involved. Creating confidence to deliver and support a stronger economy and

stronger communities has been a golden thread running through the council’s work for a number of years. 2016 was the year when we’ve seen this working in practice and I look forward to building on that in the years to come. ● All the business stories mentioned here are available to read on humberbusiness.com

IT’S A HIT: humberbusiness.com has 10,000 average unique browsers per month.

Giving you the news as it happens Humberbusiness.com: be a part of it as thousands of others are already! We launched last January – a completely new site. But word spread and very quickly, that this is the regional business site that gives you the news as it happens – as well as the opportunity to look at specialist areas, like commercial property, or engage with others who may well have useful business advice for you. During 2016

humberbusiness.com had: ● 110,000 unique browsers ● 10,000 average unique browsers per month ● 400+ daily newsletter subscribers (we send out our daily news letter to keep you all informed with what is happening on the site) ● 3,300 Twitter followers To add to that success story, we launched the specialist Commercial Property section of the site in November and, until the end of December, it

had attracted 4,000 unique browsers – all potential customers! And there’s more In 2017 we will continue to grow, responding to what you say you want and looking at opportunities to help you grow and succeed across the Humber area – both north and south. Our vision for North Lincolnshire is simple – we want it to be a place where people can do business, invest, work, play and live. Looking back over the year, there were plenty of achievements and investments that should be recognised. All of which are helping to accomplish our vision for North Lincolnshire. Significant progress was made with the Lincolnshire Lakes project in 2016. Planning permissions were granted for more than 7,300 homes to be built for the £1.3 billion development that will see the creation of five new villages on the outskirts of Scunthorpe. Around 5,000 jobs will be created as part of this project, which is going to be the region’s largest housing regeneration scheme for years to come. We have never before seen anything of his magnitude in North Lincolnshire. The £3 million British Steel Support Fund has helped 13 businesses so far in North Lincolnshire and it is

created. This fund was set up with money from the Government to help people affected by the redundancies at the Scunthorpe steelworks in 2015 and to help those businesses associated with the steelworks. The £7 million Northern

The second phase is well underway to give people access to high-speed broadband. The original targets of the

project were exceeded ahead of schedule and coverage has now been increased to 99 per cent of properties for the second phase that will be complete in 2018 – exceeding the national target of 95 per cent. Nearly 3,000 hours of business support was provided to 475 businesses through the free business support programme. The 2016 Festival of Skills and Opportunities saw 20 events take place throughout October with more than 4,000 people attending. Due to this success we will be running the month-long event again this year. Working with local partner organisations it provides opportunities to help people get back into work and raises the aspirations of children and young people. Scunthorpe town centre is definitely attracting more visitors and we are seeing developments being made with the help of our £45 million investment plans. This includes the new Ongo head office, improved road infrastructure, extension to Church Square House, specialist lighting to Church Square and plans to improve Scunthorpe Market. Our free parking initiatives are a continuing success by welcoming

The £200,000 Viable and Vibrant Places Fund is also having a great impact on businesses in Scunthorpe town centre. So far we have had 20 expressions of interest with one business already completing the

Business Hive Club has ‘big benef its’ for all members A

UNIQUE club for businesses of all sizes with more than 300 local members is a “fantastic” platform to grow, expand and explore new business opportunities. A social enterprise owned by E-Factor, Grimsby-based Business Hive Club, a bespoke community of businesses small and large, has been described as a platform that offers “entrepreneurial spirit and real prospects”. Launched in 2014, the club’s 300-plus members pay £25 a month for the support and networking opportunities provided at the Dudley Street hub. By joining the ever-expanding club, whose bosses hope to have 500 members signed up to by 2018, businesses can more easily work together through networking in a productive and collaborative working environment that can boost the growth of business in North East Lincolnshire. Businesses that are signed up benefit from access to trained advisers, HR and health and safety support, access to the Dudley Street EXPERT ADVICE: Melanie Tillett, of Tillet’s, in Sea View Street, Cleethorpes, sees the Business Hive Club as an important part of business development.

Sam Burgess, Business Hive manager, says that the “really diverse” mix of businesses already signed up to the club can provide “big benefits” for all members.

She said: “The big thing is that it brings all the businesses together which means that there’s a lot of networking and lots of opportunities to grow. “I know that businesses have been able to expand and develop since joining. “We are client led and we are doers who want to make things happen. “Our big aim for this year is to raise the bar. Regional legal powerhouse Wilkin Chapman solicitors is welcoming in 2017 from a new headquarters as the firm completes its move to the council-owned £6 million new development on Cartergate. The office complex has been built and is owned by the council, but as the anchor tenant it provides Wilkin Chapman with the space required, over the coming years, to support the fir m’s growth ambitions. The new offices are home to around 213 members of staff, whose training and development is of central importance to Wilkin Chapman and its ethos. The construction work required to build and fit the four-storey building was carried out by local contractors in a development that is expected to breathe new life into an area known as the cultural quarter of Grimsby’s town centre. Comfortably the largest law firm in the area, Wilkin Chapman’s desire to invest in the

accessibility for clients, with step-free access and lifts up to all floors and parking available on site. They are hoping to use some of the wall space in the new building to showcase some artwork by up and coming talented artists in association with some of the local colleges and universities. Local charities will also benefit from the move as Wilkin Chapman is planning to donate computer equipment, telephones and office furniture. As stated by chief executive Des Mannion, Wilkin Chapman’s move to Cartergate is ultimately a win-win situation for the council, the firm, local business growth and the wider community as part of the regeneration of Grimsby town centre. It also cements the firm’s local heritage and continued commitment to investment in the area having been situated within the Humber for more than 100 years.

Designs for the first of five planned lakes were drawn up earlier this year and £2 million funding has already been secured by North Lincolnshire Council from the Greater Lincolnshire Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) to help build it.” Your news matters at humberbusiness.com. In our planning of this new website, we spent time talking to local businesses to see what they wanted out of this digital platform. One of the major ‘wants’ was a platform where news could be shared. Your News allows our partners to upload, with ease, pictures and stories that matter to them – and which they wish to share with others.

OVEMBER 2016 saw an innovate and exciting new launch for humberbusiness.com. The site was not even a year old, but as we constantly look for new ways of serving our marketplace, we brought a fantastic new commercial property platform to you, which is dedicated to the economic cluster that calls the Energy Estuary home.

Initially partnering with three of the biggest agents in the region, approximately 700 properties are now listed. Welcoming Clark Weightman, Garness Jones and PPH Commercial to the fold at the time of the launch, Mike Pennington, managing director of the Grimsby and Scunthorpe Telegraphs, along with the Hull Daily Mail and Lincolnshire Echo, said: “We’re delighted to be launching phase two of Humberbusiness.com, offering a robust service for our partners in the commercial property sector. “Business doesn’t see a boundary when it comes to investing and expanding in the Humber, and there is a lot to be positive about on both banks as companies large and small seize opportunities aplenty. “From a standing start to have 700 properties listed, shows the reach and potential of Humberbusiness.com, and I look forward to reading of the investments made when deals are done. It is a great time to be part of Humberbusiness.com.”

From Europarc to Bridgehead, Foxhills to Flemingate; new builds, conversions and major developments are covered in detail, as the sector is reported on. This makes it the ideal platform to unite interested parties with property stakeholders. Carl Bradley, director at Hessle-based Clark Weightman, is from Grimsby, and values the pan-Humber approach. He said: “It has been interesting sitting with the team behind Humberbusiness.com and understanding how they want to develop the website. “We as agents get bombarded by a number of listing sites who all want us to advertise with them. They are often national, and are marketing opportunities, but a lot of the properties we deal with appeal to

local businesses and local investors, therefore a shop window that is Humber-focussed has got to be good for the agents, the landlords, and the occupiers. “The fact it comes from a site where we get regional business news in a format that is easily digestible and that the people behind it, and those writing the news, can be relied upon, makes it appeal all the more.” Garness Jones is a Hull-based agent, with an increasing interest in the South Bank. Managing director David Garness said: “I really value the partnership with the media group that operates in the Humber area – covering Hull, Grimsby and Scunthorpe. “I did feel we were left wanting in terms of a portal, and now I think we are really getting there with the

n common with many other businesses, On Line Design & Engineering Limited have found the past few years very difficult due to the price of oil and the price of steel. Two factors that have traditionally affected the business environment in the Humberside Region. In addition to these two factors, the uncertainty surrounding the results of the Brexit referendum have driven the company to seek opportunities and clients outside of their normal sphere of operations, whilst still serving its historical and important core clients. Although it is a service that the company has been able to offer for many years, it has now created and launched a standalone survey department and appointed a new head of department to market and manage the section. Josh Smith, a graduate of Leeds Metropolitan University has been with the company for six years. He is currently hoping to get his chartered surveyor status and has been involved with specifying, selecting and purchasing the

company’s surveying equipment, including a new 3D laser scanning station. Josh has been intimately involved in many of the company’s projects both onshore and offshore and his specific knowledge of the equipment enables him to provide survey solutions to the highest possible standards and accuracy. Josh said “In addition to traditional surveying services, we are able to offer dimensional control and fabrication verification and a full 3D colour laser scanning service, including large multi-discipline cloud surveys.” There are numerous benefits to be had from dimensional control surveys which include the reduction of on-site hot works and the minimisation of shutdown and installation times. Josh went on to explain that “the benefits of 3D laser scanning include amongst other things a reduction in design costs and the provision of uniform design accuracy across all disciplines, in addition to enabling complete clash detection on all designs”.

Immingham has a dedicated container terminal handling around 15 container vessel calls per week from parts of the world including Holland, Belgium, the Baltic, Scandinavia and Iceland. The facility also boasts large volumes of deep sea imports from the Far East, including processed fish products. The terminal is a regional centre for deep-sea container imports, enabling customers to ship deep-sea containers directly into Immingham on regular short-sea feeder vessels. The newly-enhanced facility operates on a 24/7 basis and boasts two ship-to-shore cranes and four rubber-tyred gantry cranes supported by reach-stackers. ABP also took over the operation on the dedicated container storage terminal in Hull in May 2016. The terminal, which stretches more than 30 acres, also operates on a 24/7 basis and
