O

UR life is made up of stages… and we need to make sure that we make the most of each, as we move through from our childhood to the teenage years and on into adulthood and beyond. There will always be ups and downs along the way and challenges we must face and overcome, but if we prepare well and think about our actions and that of others, then we will live well! We must equip ourselves to enjoy the happy times and cope with the sad in order that we make the most of what we all have – while feeling better about ourselves and those around us. And we must never forget, that there are people and organisations that exist to help us along the way – services that are provided to offer vital support and advice on all sorts of matters.

In order that we feel well and live well we must always take advantage of those services if we need them - to seek help from the professionals. If we do so then the issues we have may suddenly not seem quite so complex or difficult to deal with. Whether it is just something about our own lives – we need to lose a few pounds, we are drinking or eating a little too much, we are worried about a troublesome son or daughter, or a health issue! There will be someone there who can help, who can support and who can guide. Or it could be something larger – a major family issue, a financial problem or employment - again, there are people around who can put you onto the right path, and celebrate with you when that path is successfully walked down. It is then you can start to enjoy your years again, after all it is certainly true that life is short and if we make the most of it, then we will feel more satisfied and fulfilled as the years tick by. It is also true that when things

are going smoothly we are tempted to take things for granted or simply enjoy the here and now and not think ahead, or plan for what may be around the corner. That is an easy way to be – few of us wish to think about a time in the future when either ourselves or one of our relatives need extra help or support – or indeed how to look after ourselves now to ensure a better time in years to come. It is also a difficult and often emotional decision to think about making a will or planning for after you are no longer here - such actions make us painfully aware of our own mortality and a life when those we love dearly will have to be without us. But if we do love those around us, we must face such things. Ignoring the inevitable could lead to many extra problems for those relatives in the future - problems they may well have to deal with at a time when they are least likely to cope. Putting things in order now will make for a more certain future.

Likewise there are other decisions that are difficult to deal with. And one of those must certainly be the time when an elderly and much-loved relative needs care that you simply cannot give. Growing old is, again, an inevitable part of life and one which we all must accept and embrace. However for younger relatives it can be heart-breaking to reach a point when you know you are no longer able to care for a grandparent, mum or dad, husband or wife.At such times you need to feel absolutely sure that the care you are selecting is as right as it can be - and you need to ensure that you are receiving any money that is entitled to you to help with that care. We hope this special Telegraph publication helps you look in the right direction if you are facing any such issues or maybe it will offer a reminder to you that you need to start looking at some things that you have put off for too long already!

It’s set to launch towards the end of August 2016. It’s going to be called ‘My Autistic World’, which will be based around autism. Autistic people can set up a profile including their likes and dislikes, emergency contact numbers, and if they are struggling with speech, it will have words and phrases they can show to others to convey how they are feeling. “There are links to the autism portal on Services4me. It has contacts for the focus Single Point of Access (SPA) - which is available 24 hours a day. There is also a link to the Family First Information Service. mind your health What is longterm answer?

At the heart of Fundamental Facts is a focus on prevention, because the best way to deal with a crisis is to prevent it from happening in the first place. For example, by providing the right information, guidance and support in childhood and adolescence, the chances of developing mental health problems can be reduced for millions of people over a lifetime. This focus on prevention is in part about what we can all do to safeguard our wellbeing, but is also about tackling the social and economic inequalities that can lead to a higher prevalence of mental health problems.

How can you help?

W

orld Mental Health Day, hosted by the World Federation of Mental Health, is on 10 October each year. To help mark the occasion, the Mental Health Foundation is raising awareness of what can be done to ensure that people with mental health problems can live with dignity:

The problem

One in four adults and one in ten children are likely to have a mental health problem in any given year. This can have a profound impact on the lives of tens of millions of people in the UK, and can affect their ability to sustain relationships, work, or just get through the day.

8

But an ill-informed and damaging attitude among some people exists around mental health that can make it difficult for some to seek help. It is estimated that only about a quarter of people with a mental health problem in the UK receive ongoing treatment, leaving the majority of people grappling with mental health issues on

their own, seeking help or information, and dependent on the informal support of family, friends or colleagues.

How can we challenge this?

We are confronting this stigma through facts. Facts that help us understand patterns of mental health problems, their causes and solutions. Facts that help us break down barriers in seeking help and support. We have produced an updated Fundamental Facts with the aim of distributing it to the widest audience possible.

This October please help us by sharing Fundamental Facts on social media with family, friends and colleagues. We believe that effectively supporting people experiencing mental health problems is on target to become one of the greatest public health challenges of our time. Stigmatising and discriminatory treatment can be particularly distressing when a person is experiencing a health crisis. We all have mental health and by failing to treat people with mental health problems with dignity we make it more difficult to ensure that everyone takes steps to safeguard their wellbeing and to seek help, as it can lead to self-stigma, low confidence, low self-esteem, withdrawal and social isolation.

IN a special report for Living Well, we feature some of the topics that are a focus of attention at Grimsby’s Diana Princess of Wales Hospital and Scunthorpe General Hospital where staff put an emphasis on preventing illness and helping patients to seek advice.

Diabetes: setting the record straight

E

ARLIER this year, professionals across Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust supported Diabetes Week in a bid to reach out to those living with diabetes. Mr Paul Dromgoole, diabetes specialist nurse, said: “This year the focus of Diabetes Week was ‘setting the record straight’ which meant others realise diabetes is more than just diet or insulin injections.” He added: “Often, when someone is diagnosed with diabetes one of the most

14

difficult things to come to terms with is that it is for life. Everyone reacts differently but it’s essential you work with your healthcare team to manage your diabetes safely and effectively.” Most people with diabetes are well managed and supported at their local GP surgery. For some, who have more complex needs, their needs are best met at the local specialist service at their nearest hospital. A wide range of services are on offer with clinics held at the diabetes centres at Scunthorpe and

Grimsby hospitals and at the outpatient department at Goole hospital. The clinics deal with all aspects of diabetes management including glucose control, hypertension (blood pressure) control, cholesterol control and obesity management among others. Conditions treated at diabetic clinics include: • Foot complications including ulcers • Insulin pump treatment • Diabetes in pregnancy • Complex treatment regimes and individuals with advanced complications of their condition • The clinic also offers an educational course for patients with type 1 diabetes Mr Dromgoole said: “With lifestyle approaches and appropriate drug treatment for diabetes, and effective management of glucose, cholesterol and blood pressure, the complications of diabetes are largely preventable.” Your GP practice will determine where your diabetes care needs are best met.

SPECIAL REPORT

Infection prevention and control P

EOPLE are being encouraged to keep their hands clean to prevent infections in hospitals and everyday life. Health professionals across Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust are encouraging people to know the importance of keeping hands clean. Maurice Madeo, lead nurse in infection prevention and control at the Trust, said: “Hand hygiene is a simple thing and it’s the best way to

prevent infection and illness. When visiting someone in hospital, always clean your hands using soap and water or alcohol handrubs. Do this when you enter or leave a patient’s room or other areas of the hospital.” The theme for World Hygiene Day, which took place earlier this year, was hospitals locally highlightingw the importance of hand hygiene best practices to prevent the spread of bacteria. Effective hand decontamination relies on an effective technique, which includes: • Wetting hands with warm water • Applying an adequate amount of (preferably liquid) soap • Rubbing this thoroughly onto all hand surfaces (for at least 10 to 15 seconds) • Rinsing thoroughly • Drying thoroughly, preferably with disposable paper towel • Taps should be then turned off with the paper towel to avoid recontaminating the hands Mr Madeo said: “Clean hands prevent infections not only in hospitals but in everyday life too as it’s a key prevention measure in healthcare settings, in day care facilities, in schools and public institutions, and for the safety of our food.” The infection prevention and control team for the Trust will be out and about within the hospital and community settings promoting awareness, engaging with staff and members of the public in Scunthorpe, Brigg, Goole and Grimsby.

of Attorney (or don’t have a pre-2007 Enduring Power of Attorney) and you become incapacitated in the future – whether mentally, through old age or dementia, or physically, through injury or illness – there is NO ONE who is automatically authorised to handle your financial affairs, or make decisions about your welfare and care needs.

There is no such thing as “next of kin” is a

myth in this context. Even your spouse or your child would be unable to act for you if you have not made a Lasting Power of Attorney enabling them to do so.

Attorney for Property and Finances and lose mental capacity in the future, the Court of Protection could take over. Attorney for Health and Welfare, the Local Authority could decide where you live and who cares for you – and your family would not have the final say.

For the elderly, and people who lack the

mental capacity to handle their financial affairs or their own welfare needs, a Lasting Power of Attorney is essential.

There is no time limit on a Lasting Power

FINANCE savings and how to plan for different life stages. Getting a good understanding of personal finance will help people make more informed decisions. “We’d always suggest to people to do their research when it comes to making a financial decision, speak to a trusted adviser if appropriate and choose a product that best suits your needs. Having a savings pot easily accessible is a good way to cope financially should an emergency occur.”

So what financial topics would people like to know more about?

Many people feel out of their depth when it comes to financial matters, according to new research

W

ho do you turn to when you need help with a financial issue? Well, new research suggests that more than one in three (36 per cent) of us will ask a family member for advice on money matters we are struggling to understand. However, this may not be such a great help, as the survey, from Treasurybacked savings provider NS&I, has found that many people feel out of their depth when it comes to managing money on a day-to-day basis – and for the future. Some 31 per cent of people surveyed say they were never formally taught about managing their money, but wish they had been. One in four (25 per cent) believe that if they had received formal financial

18

education, it would have helped them save more. The survey also found that women are more likely than men to turn to other family members when confronted with a financial issue they don’t understand. Two-fifths (40 per cent) said they would ask a family member for help, compared with 33 per cent of men. Of those who did say they received some form of financial education, only 36 per cent said they got advice about the importance of saving money or other important matters relating to future finances, such as wills, pensions or power of attorney. Jill Waters, retail director at NS&I, says: “Our research illustrates millions of us may be struggling without a basic knowledge of money,

Working with the next generation in schools is a great start but we have to help people at every stage in life.

The research found that making a budget is seen as the most important financial topic, followed by the importance of saving and planning or saving for retirement. On the other hand, handling a redundancy, understanding what benefits someone might be entitled to and making a will were seen as the least important financial subjects, according to the survey of more than 2,000 people.

And which topics leave people scratching their heads?

When it comes to the trickiest topics to master, investing in stocks and shares came out top, with 27 per cent of people choosing this. Planning for retirement was another subject seen as particularly complex, with one in nine (11 per cent) people admitting to struggling with this. Despite the confusion, there is some hope however that the next generation may find it easier to get to grips with financial matters. Financial education was introduced to the national curriculum in England in 2014, bringing it into line with the rest of the UK. Caroline Rookes, chief executive of the Money Advice Service, a free, independent body offering money tips, says: “Working with the next generation in schools is a great start but we have to help people at every stage in life, from infancy to retirement.”

Get on the road with the scheme W

ITH the summer 2016 Paralympics now upon us, the people at leading website UsedCarExpert have released some advice on the Motablilty scheme that we have in this country.

Here are their thoughts: “It is a really effective way for disabled people to get motoring – government funded and administered, the scheme really is superbly effective in getting differently-abled people into cars and on the roads. It is entirely admirable and

has a side effect that is pretty cool too. “The cars are generally sold on at three years, which means a glut of well maintained, usually automatic, cars coming onto the market at around that time. So those in search of second-hand bargain can benefit. “The cars are usually practical machines – easy to get in and out of for obvious reasons – and are usually sold on when returned to their un-modified state with all extra controls and such removed. The unfashionable combination of petrol engine/auto gearbox usually means low prices. And the usage pattern often means low miles.”

Exhausts Batteries Servicing Brakes Motobility

All the above means that, clearly, having a disability does not mean you are prevented from having the same mobility as others - in fact some great deals are clearly available to ensure that is certainly not the case. Help is at hand to ensure you do get access to the best services that are on offer.

Marshall BMW: Mobility specialists

M

ARSHALL BMW are proud to be associated with the Motability car scheme, a registered charity dedicated to helping disabled people and war pensioners obtain a new car. The Marshall BMW centres in Grimsby & Scunthorpe were taken over in August 2014 by Marshall Motor Group and have been offering the Motability scheme for around nine years. Both centres sell new and used vehicles, offer servicing and repairs, and genuine parts and accessories. Grimsby also houses a BMW & MINI Approved Bodyshop. The Motability Scheme enables disabled people to get mobile by exchanging their mobility allowance to lease a new car. Signing up to the scheme is easy, as Marshall BMW will handle the entire process for you. Every three years, you could be driving a brand new BMW, with insurance, service and maintenance (including windscreen and tyre replacement costs) all included as part of the scheme - so the price of the vehicle is the only price you’ll pay. With the option to nominate up to two drivers, you don’t have to worry

20

about being the sole driver. You, plus one other person can be the named driver, or in instances where the person is eligible but unable to drive, you can have two others - such as a carer or parent. On top of that, there is a generous 60,000 mile allowance or 100,000 for WAV customers (Wheelchair Adapted Vehicles). There are over 500 WAVs available with the Motability Scheme. To be eligible to lease a car through this scheme, you must be in receipt of one of the following allowances: • Higher rate mobility component of the Disability Living Allowance • Enhanced rate of the mobility component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP)

The Marshall BMW showroom at Old Crosby, Scunthorpe, DN15 8PT

• War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement (WPMS) • Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP) You will also need to have at least 12 months remaining on your allowance when you place an order. Prices start from £999 and excitingly, the new BMW X1 is now available on the scheme. The range includes the BMW 1 Series (3 and 5 door Sports Hatch), BMW 2 Series Active Tourer, BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer seven-seater and the BMW 3 Series Saloon and Touring. Selected models such as the BMW 116d Sports Hatch, 216d Active Tourer and 216d Gran Tourer are accessible to drivers who are aged under 25 years old. There are a wide range

of models, including many adaptions at no extra cost, a choice of automatic or manual transmission and high standard specification includes; metallic paint, BMW Emergency Call (accident and breakdown cover) and BMW Navigation. Innovative BMW EfficientDynamics technologies reduce fuel consumption and emissions, whilst optimising performance so your car is responsive and perfectly balanced. For further information about the Motability Scheme, visit www.motability.co.uk. Choose well and stay well A&E isn’t always the best place to go. You may get more appropriate and faster treatment elsewhere. PHARMACIST

I

F you or a member of your family becomes ill or injured, choosing the right NHS service can help you get on the road to recovery in no time. Knowing where to turn when you have an urgent health need can sometimes be tricky, though, and that’s why in North East Lincolnshire, we’ve introduced our Single Point of Access (SPA) on 01472 256 256 - one number you can call day or night for advice you can trust and access to urgent medical services. If you live in North Lincolnshire or Lincolnshire you can call NHS 111 for 24/7 help.

So, what are our options?

SELF CARE Sometimes the best person to take care of you is yourself or a family member. You should be prepared for some of the most common ailments by keeping a well-stocked medicine cabinet and first-aid kit at home. A local pharmacist can give you advice on what to have in. Essentials include: PAIN RELIEF Painkillers such as aspirin, paracetamol and ibuprofen are effective at relieving most minor aches and pains. ANTIHISTAMINES These are useful for allergies and insect bites.

22

They are also helpful if you have hay fever. FLUID REPLACEMENT DRINKS Fever, diarrhoea and vomiting make us lose the water and minerals we need and can lead to dehydration. Fluid replacement drinks can help restore your body’s natural balance of minerals and fluid. INDIGESTION TREATMENT If you have stomach ache, heartburn or trapped wind. FIRST AID A well-prepared first aid kit can help treat minor cuts, sprains and bruises.

Pharmacists can advise on common illnesses such as coughs, colds, aches and pains and the medicines you need to treat them. They can also help you decide whether you need to see a doctor. You can talk to your pharmacist in confidence and you don’t need an appointment. Most pharmacies now have a quiet consultation area where patients can discuss health problems in privacy. Services from your local pharmacy include: • Emergency contraception • Chlamydia screening and treatment • Pregnancy testing

• Medicines Reviews • Stop smoking services • Weight management • Truss fittings • Incontinence supplies • Needle exchange and supervised drug administration They can help with minor ailments such as: • Bugs and viruses • Minor injuries • Tummy troubles • Women’s health (for example menopause or menstruation) • Skin conditions • Allergies • Aches and pains • Children’s minor illnesses and mishaps

YOUR GP (family doctor) If your pharmacist is unable to deal with your condition or it doesn’t get better after a few days, your GP can help. They provide a range of services by appointment, including medical advice, examinations and prescriptions. If you are not registered with a GP, call the local

health advice line on 01472 256256 or visit www.nhs.uk to find one near you. A GP Out of Hours service is available from 6.30pm to 8.00am on weekdays and all day at weekends and on bank holidays. If you think you need a GP appointment out of hours, please ring Single Point of Access on 01472 256256.

aking on the role of carer can happen at any time in life. Support can be anything from help with practical tasks, such as cooking, housework and shopping, through to physical assistance and personal care. With the wish of most older people to remain in their own home as long as possible, the help of carers can make this possible. Family members need not necessarily take on this responsibility alone, however. The role of a carer can be physically and emotionally draining, so it needs to be remembered that they may need support themselves at times, and even a complete respite break to recharge their batteries. Elderly relatives may just need a little assistance with day-to-day living, perhaps at

Your local GP surgery may be a useful first port of call – it could have a dedicated carers’ support service. Some surgeries offer a range of information and assistance to carers; your doctor may also help you to get in contact with local services, such as your social service office – if, for example, you require a Carer’s Assessment – or to contact your local voluntary services if you need respite in your home. Most importantly, the surgery may also help put you in touch with an occupational therapist (OT). OTs can help provide

aids and adaptations, for example, changes required to bathrooms and kitchens – and that may be all that is needed to enable independent living or adapting your home to ensure care can continue. They work with individuals who have conditions that are mentally, physically, developmentally, or emotionally disabling – their goal is to help clients lead independent, productive, and satisfying lives. As a carer, looking after your own health is of the utmost importance. Caring invariably brings about emotional stress so you may find it helpful to seek a counsellor, to help you make sense of your new or ongoing life as a carer. This could be in specific areas such as dealing with

bereavement or separation from a loved one, or with the more general feelings of stress, anxiety and depression you experience in your caring role. A counsellor can also help to resolve any conflict that exists between you and the one you’re caring for and others you are close to.

Choosing where to make your new home

W

ITH age comes many life changes –

not only for the person who is getting older, but for their loved ones, who can be faced with making some of the most difficult decisions of their lives. There comes a point in time when a relative or carer is no longer able to provide the care that is required to look after an elderly person properly – they may love that person very much, but the demands, pressures and specialist help required makes it necessary to look to specialist care outside of the family home. This can be a painful and emotional time – but is made easier if you feel reassured that the care you select is good, comfortable and offers the support necessary.

The checklist below has been put together by Age UK: Love Later Life. It is a really good list for those who are looking for care for their elderly relatives – use it, it will help and for more details and help please go to the organisation’s website www.ageuk.org.uk

Love Later Life checklist Where is the home?

Will visitors be able to get there easily? Are there transport links nearby? Are facilities such as shops, pubs, parks and places of worship within easy reach? How accessible is the home? Will it be easy for you/your relative to enter and leave the building, and move between rooms and floors? How good is the wheelchair access?

Is there a lift?

Does the home feel clean and inviting? Are there any unpleasant smells?

28

Do the rooms feel hot and stuffy or cold and draughty? Is there a relaxed and friendly atmosphere? Will you feel comfortable chatting and socialising in the home’s public areas?

Will you/ your relative be able to bring possessions such as pictures, plants and furniture? Does the home allow pets? Will you/your relative be able to settle into the home?

Are chairs arranged in groups or round the edges of the rooms?

Would you/your relative prefer a larger or smaller home?

Is there a quiet living room for reading, as well as one with a television?

Pros

Are the rooms a good size? Will you/your relative have a private room? Is there any choice of rooms to accommodate preferences such as sun, shade or quiet? Do the rooms have en suite facilities or basins?

S

earching for the right care home is not something any of us do every day. Often when the time does come, it can be quite stressful for all involved

STEP ONE:

UNDERSTAND YOUR NEEDS

There are many different types of care homes, ranging from homes which provide specialist nursing or dementia care to others which simply offer a safe and comfortable new home for people who may need a little assistance with daily life. Which one you choose will obviously depend on the level of care required. Most homes will work with the person entering care to undertake a full care assessment, often with input from family or friends, social workers, care managers or GPs.

STEP TWO:

IDENTIFY THE BEST LOCATION

Many care home residents have strong social and family connections in their local communities, and will often stay in the same area to maintain these relationships. For others, moving into a care home can provide an opportunity to move closer to family or friends to make it easier for them to visit or provide additional support.

WHERE TO LIVE

Once you have an understanding of the type of care required and the location which best meets your needs, you can start to develop a shortlist of homes. There are a number of online care home directories which can provide a good place to start, or you can just use a few Google searches to narrow your search.

STEP THREE:

CHECK ON QUALITY STANDARDS

At this stage you should also take some time to check third party reviews of some of the care homes you may be considering. The established independent regulator for care homes in England is called the Care Quality Commission. They undertake regular inspections of all care homes to ensure they meet government standards and can help identify any areas for concern. In Scotland, the independent regulator is the Care Inspectorate and in Wales it is the Care and Social Services Inspectorate Wales (CSSIW).

STEP FOUR:

VISITING SHORTLISTED HOMES Once you have shortlisted a number of homes, it is well worth the time to visit each of them to look around, meet the manager, speak to staff and residents and get a feel for life within that home. Just like family homes, care homes

differ considerably in character and atmosphere and it is important to find an environment in which you or your loved one feels comfortable. This is very much about personal choice and a visit to the home will enable you to get a feel about everything from the care home team and how they approach care to the general buzz and atmosphere of a home.

STEP FIVE:

COST OF CARE

The cost of care can vary greatly depending on the level of support required, but there may well be some options available to help fund the support you need. It’s important to know your entitlements at this stage, and to ensure you discuss the costs thoroughly with each care home manager to ensure you have a full understanding of what your care will cost.

STEP SIX:

SETTLING IN

When you do find the right care home, moving in can be the start of a positive new life. Many of our residents take up new hobbies or are able to rekindle interests that weren’t possible without the help of friendly and supportive staff. They make new friends and learn new skills which enable them to live happy and fulfilling lives.

own shower and there’s a shared bath facility, adapted for disabled requirements. Meals are taken with other residents in the dining room, unless illness prevents this. Breakfast is provided with everyone’s tastes catered for, along with allergies, vegetarian diets or diabetic requirements. Claire Sykes, administrator explained more: “An initial chat can assess your needs. The residents are provided with a cooked lunch and tea, they are free to do whatever they want in their own time. Some residents like to go out for lunch. We are not a care home, we offer sheltered accommodation with extras. There’s always a member of staff available overnight from 9.30pm until 8am. Additionally there is a member of staff on the premises from 8am until 2.30pm and from 4.30pm to 6.30pm. “Residents can take part in numerous in-house activities; arts and crafts, music or spend time in the beautiful gardens. What’s more, there are social events to keep you connected to your community such as a weekly coffee morning, from 10.30am-11.30am. If they want to have a carer they can, they just need to

Grimsby Grange & Manor

L

OCATED close to local amenities, and with a strong link to the surrounding community, Grimsby Grange & Manor in North East Lincolnshire, is now further strengthening its outreach work, with the opening of a monthly Dementia Café in the home. With the support of the local Alzheimer’s Society link, the home has established a new group, which has a focus to provide information and support to the families and friends of those living with dementia. An informal café that runs on the first Saturday of each month, between 10.30am and midday, there will be the opportunity to discuss with others the symptoms and impact of dementia, with regular key speakers taking part, and all accompanied by a warming cup of tea or coffee and with biscuits. “Our home has a good reputation and recognition for working well with those living with dementia,” comments Tammy Dennis, Home Manager. ‘It’s a vibrant and busy environment, and our residents enjoy life to the full.

“We wanted to extend our experience and knowledge to friends and families in the community, and create a hub for people to come to and share their stories, bringing together people in similar situations who might provide some support for

each other.” The home is going from strength to strength, following GOOD reports from the Care Quality Commission, CQC, earlier in the year for both the Grange and the Manor. The reports have highlighted the homes as having ‘a relaxed atmosphere which felt homely”, and that “… people were encouraged to participate in activities and to maintain their independence where possible.” Ratings were given based on observations of the home by the unannounced CQC team and on

conversations with staff, residents and their relatives. Additional feedback included; “It’s a very safe place and staff know how to look after people properly.” “There is a good team here…the staff are just great.” “I’ve worked here for seven years and wouldn’t want to work anywhere else.” The Manor has also been commended for a strong staff recruitment and selection process, which ensures that staff are recruited with the appropriate skills, qualifications and experience. There is a commitment to extending opportunities outside the home, with a supportive community of volunteers and regular placements for sixth form college students. Tammy Dennis, Manager of both homes, says, “We have a lovely, vibrant home where our residents and their families tell us they are very happy. Our Dementia Café is just another step in our development to engage and embed further in the community around us and we would welcome anyone in the community to join us, our doors are open.” The Dementia Café dates for the next few months are: Saturday 6th August / Saturday 3rd September

Picking up your life, what to do next?

O

NE of the most difficult aspects of bereavement is picking yourself up afterwards. While you’re organising the funeral and other arrangements, you have something to focus and distract you from your feelings. It is only when this is all over that the loss begins to really hit home for many people. And this can be especially hard for those on their own.

40

Getting back on an even keel can seem like climbing Everest and it is important to take your time. But you will recover, you will start to feel better and here are some tips to help you begin if you’re alone or without a support system: Do all the things you wanted to do but haven’t been able to do previously. • Travel – whether it be somewhere local or a trip to a faraway place you’ve

always wanted to visit. There are many tour groups for singles. • Attend nature walks, concerts, lectures and maybe the cinema. Or invite a friend you haven’t talked to in a while. • Volunteer – it is a wonderful way to make friends, stay active and feel fulfilled. • Go out to dinner alone! Women in particular might feel uncomfortable, but you have the right to ask for a table for one without feeling that people are judging you. Besides, most people are too preoccupied with their own lives to notice. • Gather a circle of friends or people in a similar situation – just make sure the evening doesn’t turn into a ‘pity party’. • Take advantage of counselling and support services in your community, if you feel the need to talk. There’s no shame at all in using such services and a friendly voice is only a phone call away.

FUNERAL PLANNING

A lasting farewell for a loved one

W

HEN you lose someone you love, it’s natural to want to withdraw from the world as you struggle to cope with the many emotions experienced at such a sad time. Yet for many, the responsibility of arranging the person’s funeral can make this impossible. It’s a challenging task, but there’s always plenty of help close at hand from your chosen funeral director – who can provide a wealth of advice, expertise and guidance – as well as relatives and friends, whose support you should never be afraid to seek out. They can also provide invaluable input into the funeral itself, if the deceased has not left specific instructions. After all, this is a great opportunity to celebrate their life and all that they meant to those who will be attending. One of the first decisions to be made is the choice of coffin or casket, which is probably wider than you might think. While wood is the traditional option, willow, bamboo, wicker and cardboard are other possibilities, and ideal for those concerned about the environment.

Unless the deceased has left specific instructions, you may decide whether their body should be embalmed – which helps to slow decay and restore a natural skin tone – or not, although there are types of funeral where it may not permitted, such as a burial at sea. Similarly, there may be restrictions on clothing and the types of personal items that you would like to place within the casket. Once again, your funeral director will be able to offer invaluable advice. Then there is the ceremony itself, which can be a real comfort to those grieving for the deceased – whether it be based on tradition, specific religious faith or a more personal belief – and which also respects his or her wishes. The funeral director will contact your chosen minister or other celebrant, or someone of the appropriate faith if you don’t have a particular person in mind, and they will discuss the arrangements with you in detail. If you have certain readings that you would like to be delivered and hymns or other songs, be sure to outline what they are and don’t forget that some hymns can be sung and played to different music. It is also possible to hold a civil funeral ceremony,

for those who don’t have a particular religious faith. Once more, your funeral director can advise on how to go about arranging this, as well as the timing of the ceremony – whatever its type. And the tone of funerals nowadays can be very different, from the solemnity of the more traditional approach to an event that could actually be described as happy or uplifting, where those attending are dressed as colourfully as possible. Clearly, there is no right or wrong in this instance. The wishes of the deceased and his or her loved ones are what count, although if you are planning something out of the ordinary it’s always wise to let other mourners know in advance. The spoken tribute – or eulogy – to the deceased can also vary in format and content, whether it’s delivered by the minister or by a loved one. It often includes a brief summary of the person’s life, their likes, loves, achievements and how they touched the lives of others. Always sincere, often emotional and sometimes even light-hearted, they’re the gentlest of ways to say a final goodbye to the deceased and remember just what a wonderful person they were.
