WHY SKIN TO SKIN IS IN A midwife explains the benefits of mums - and dads - holding newborn babies against their bare skin

WHAT is skin to skin and is there any need for me to practice it with my baby once we’ve left hospital? Midwife Jenny Lord says: “Skin to skin is the action of placing your naked baby on your bare chest after birth, and guidelines are now recommending it for all babies. “This contact is proven to help you bond with your baby in the initial ‘golden hour’ after birth, though there are also huge payoffs to continuing with skin to skin for several weeks as you and baby settle into your home routine.

6

“A key physiological benefit for your baby includes building their brain. “Crucially, the amygdala - located deep in the centre of the brain - goes through a process of maturation during your baby’s first two months. Skin to skin activates the amygdala, contributing to its maturation; this is vital to your baby’s development. “Other physiological benefits include increasing your baby’s pain threshold and reducing their stress levels. “Extended skin to skin time can have benefits for mums and dads too. Mothers who practice it have a lower risk of postnatal depression as this technique offers another way of calming your baby that doesn’t involve feeding - you’re likely to feel more confident with your baby if you practice it. “Dads should have a go too fathers who did skin to skin felt consolidated in their parental role. “Skin to skin is a natural ability every mum has and something

they should strive to continue doing in the months following birth.”

Why won’t my baby stop crying after feeding? GP Dr Sarah Jarvis says: “Coping with a crying baby, particularly one that seems inconsolable, can be emotionally and physically draining. But it’s important to remember it’s not your fault. “All babies cry and most of the time it’s harmless and part of their natural instinct. “Feeding problems such as colic can cause babies to cry more than normal, particularly around feeding. Feeding issues affect up to half of all infants, and colic affects up to one in five babies - so it’s probably more common than you might think. “As well as the intense crying, other symptoms of colic can be clenched fists, an arched back, and a red or flushed face in an otherwise completely healthy baby. “Reflux and regurgitation, when

babies bring up their feed during or shortly after feeding, and constipation, are also common baby feeding problems which cause excessive crying, general irritability and discomfort. “Cows’ milk allergy, albeit less common (affecting around two to 7.5 per cent of babies under one year of age), can cause a very wide range of symptoms such as rashes, failing to gain weight, reluctance to feed, diarrhoea and vomiting.” “Don’t worry, if it’s colic or another feeding problem there are things you can do to help, such as feeding techniques and dietary changes. If you suspect a feeding problem such as reflux or cows’ milk allergy, you should speak to your GP, pharmacist or health visitor.”

Have some extra space now the kids have flown the nest? IF YOUR KIDS HAVE FLOWN THE NEST TO PASTURES NEW, YOU MIGHT FIND YOU HAVE SOME EMPTY SPACE IN YOUR HOME THAT IS LOOKING TO BE FILLED. CONSIDER FOSTERING, HELPING CHILDREN WITHOUT HOMES BECOME SETTLED AND NURTURED AS parents across Scunthorpe and Grimsby come to terms with their children leaving the family home and making their first steps towards independant lives, it’s time to seek ways to fill the space that is left behind... Perhaps your children have recently gone off to live at university or are leaving in the Autumn? A leading independent fostering agency says that becoming a foster carer is a natural transition for many parents once their own children have flown the nest.

Foster Care Associates (FCA) says that this stage in life could be an ideal opportunity for many parents to consider fostering turning what to many is a feeling of emptiness into a positive experience, whilst making a huge difference to a young person’s life.

EMPTY NEST

Commonly known as ‘empty nest syndrome’, it describes the mixed emotions experienced by many parents when their children leave home – either to go to university or just move on to independent living. With an estimated 7000 new foster carers needed across the UK in 2017, FCA is keen to hear

from experienced parents who may find that they now have the extra time and room to offer a secure and loving home a to a young person in need. Roy Murray, managing director of FCA, said: “Becoming a foster carer takes resilience, patience and understanding, something that parents of older teenagers have in spades, along with a wealth of life experience. “Although some parents view their children leaving home as a liberating time, many find it hard to suddenly have no children at home who need their care, and have a difficult time adjusting to an empty home – this is why we’d urge people to consider fostering.

ONE-TO-ONE SUPPORT

“We’ve been working with children and young people for 21 years and our experience shows that one-to-one support in a family setting is the best way to help children with a care background overcome their issues and deal with their past.” For those parents who are only

able to provide care during term time FCA offer short term fostering placements for children and young people who require temporary care. Often this is because their families are unable to look after them during a particular time. This could be because their parents or guardians are unwell, they’re unable to cope at that time, or the child is waiting to be adopted.

ONGOING SUPPORT

FCA provides ongoing comprehensive support to all foster carers including training, a financial allowance, access to carer support groups and organised family activities – all contributing factors as to why FCA placements are 22 per cent more stable than the national average. For more information on becoming a foster carer with FCA, and to find out more about forthcoming regional events call 0800 023 4561 or visit www.thefca.co.uk.

MAKE STARTING SCHOOL AS EASY AS POSSIBLE... If you’re worried about your child starting school, here are some expert tips to help it go smoothly... STARTING primary school can be a daunting prospect for both children and their parents. But there’s no need for youngsters or mums and dads to be anxious about the move to ‘Big School’ - as long as they’re prepared, both practically and emotionally, promises PTA UK, the charity which supports the nation’s parent teacher associations. “Starting in reception year is a real milestone in a child’s educational journey, which should be filled with exciting opportunities and the chance to forge lifelong friendships,” says Michelle Doyle Wildman, PTA UK’s acting CEO. “Stepping over the classroom threshold for the first time can fill you with a real mix of emotions; from excitement to nervousness, uncertainty to joy and everything in between. “Yet whatever you or your child is feeling, there are simple things you can do to prepare to have a great start to school life.” Here are some tips: 1. Get excited about starting school: Prepare your child by reading a book about starting school together or talking to friends with children already at school.

8

2. Dress-up: Get your child to practice putting on and taking off their new uniform and school shoes. If they need all-in-one suits for rainy days, get them to try putting these on as they can be tricky. 3. Label everything: However you choose to label the uniform, make sure you include a label in everything. Labels with pictures are great for children who can’t read their name yet. 4. Stock up on spare uniform: Reception class can be a messy time, and children are unbelievably good at losing smaller items like ties and socks, so make sure you have at least two of every uniform item. 5. Be positive and calm: Children pick up on anxiety, so if you seem worried they’ll know, and may even wonder if they should worry too. 6. Try to keep tears at bay: Remember that while the start of school can be an emotional time, often children are ready to start their next chapter and will go off without even a backward glance or long farewell. So instead of getting upset yourself - which might unnecessarily upset your child too - concentrate on the positives, including the wonderful new opportunities your child is about to find, and

the potentially lifelong friends he/ she will make. 7. Be prepared for tiredness: The first year at school is a huge change for children, so prepare yourself for meltdowns - they are completely normal. Help by making sure they get as much good quality food and sleep as possible to keep their energy levels up. 8. Anticipate a flexible schedule: Make sure you know the timetable for the start of term for reception year entrants. Most schools have a phased approach where the children may go in for half days only in the first couple of weeks. 9. Do your homework: Get to know what the expectations of the school are when it comes to homework. This will help you to establish a routine and positively support your child’s learning.

10. Get involved: Take every opportunity to attend events or parents evenings. For example, school PTAs organise gatherings from fetes to quiz nights, dinner parties to wine tastings, and cake sales to discos. Get to know other parents and school staff by getting active in your PTA or volunteering at school in other ways. “Children are more enthusiastic about school life if they see their parents being part of it too,” explains Michelle. “We know parental participation in education is crucially important if our children are to reach their potential. “The good news is that as well as following these tips, being positive, calm and enthusiastic about school goes a long way and can make a big difference to how your child gets on.”

Turning the page on teen rampage

DEALING WITH TEEN RAGE CAN BE TOUGH FOR PARENTS, BUT LISA SALMON REPORTS THERE IS MUCH PRACTICAL ADVICE ON HOW TO TAKE THE HEAT OUT OF FLARE-UPS WITHOUT LOSING YOUR COOL PARENTING teenagers is rarely easy and when tough issues arise it can be hard for mums and dads to know what to do for the best. This is a particularly difficult time of year, with the stress of exams adding additional pressures. But there’s a wealth of advice out there on how to handle teen trouble, and psychologist Michael Hawton is one of the latest to offer help in his book Engaging Adolescents.

MANAGING A DIGITAL WORLD

Hawton believes the most difficult issue today’s parents face is how to help their teens manage an increasingly complex digital and social media world. “Parents are facing an unprecedented and more complex parenting landscape than a generation ago,” he says. “Not only do they have to manage behavioural problems, but now they are also being called on to look after their teenagers’ stress and anxiety levels in a way that wasn’t so apparent 20 years ago.” He says teenagers are more tired than in the past due to the overuse of devices, which many take to bed with them, resulting in record levels of sleep deprivation. The result: tired teenagers are less able to tolerate frustration. “The complexity of the landscape

means parents have to be better equipped to handle teenagers’ problems, but they aren’t sure or confident of how to intervene in a meaningful way so their teenagers’ wellbeing is enhanced.” Handling tricky issues with teenagers requires parents to have a considered approach, Hawton says. “It’s hard for parents not to feel provoked and to fire back at the teenager if the teenager fires up or becomes rude, but that’s exactly what they need to do if they want their teen to get better at self-regulation.”

TRY PASTA

Hawton points out that when pilots face an emergency, they keep a lid on their emotions by following a process. Parents also need to adopt this approach and by doing so they can learn to ditch reactive responses and focus on solutions by being wellprepared when they engage with their teenager. One way of doing this is by using the so-called PASTA approach to resolving conflicts. ▷ Prepare: plan what you’re going to say by writing down your thoughts. Be clear about what you want to change, what you’re willing to negotiate on, what your bottom line is, and what will happen if you can’t work things out. ▷ Appointment: arrange a time and place to meet your teenager where you won’t have to rush your discussion.

▷ Say: say something positive; say what the problem is; say what you want to happen. ▷ Tame the tiger: acknowledge your teenager’s feelings and needs, but if they’re attacking or disputing what you’ve said, don’t go on the counter-attack. Instead, use their attack as information about the way they feel, then try to reset the conversation and solve a different aspect of the problem. ▷ Agree: agree on some things that will happen, apply a timescale for such action if possible, and try to emphasise what’s in it for them. TAMING TIGERS

As well as a series of case studies to illustrate how his methods can work, Hawton includes five advance techniques for taming tigers. ▷ Tell your teen you can’t go on unless they settle down. ▷ Name the pattern they’re re-enacting - such as regularly blaming someone else - and ask

them to avoid it. ▷ Be curious by digging a bit deeper emotionally and asking a question. ▷ Ask for more responsibility from them. ▷ If they insult you, don’t just sit there stunned. Teenagers will spit out insults if they feel miserable or backed into a corner, so respond with something like: “You must’ve had a bad day to be that nasty to me when we’re trying to work out a solution. I hope you feel better.” By responding with sympathy you’re refusing to be their victim and sending a message you want to sort out the problem with them. Hawton adds: “Parents don’t have to become professional mediators in order to use these skills, but they do need to work out what they need to say and how to say it back to the teenager when the teenager starts to ramp up their emotions.”

No, we don’t expect that you can simply get up tomorrow and run five kilometres, not if you’re not used to running. But there are many couch-to-5k programmes that are designed to gently build up your stamina and get you used to getting out and running. We really recommend the NHS’ couch to 5k programme, which is based around three runs a week over nine weeks. It begins with running for just a few minutes at a time, but by the end you’ll be able to run for 30 minutes or more. It was designed to help someone

You can also download similar apps that let you listen to your own music while the running programme lets you know what to do. Best of all, it’s totally free..

“If exercise were a pill, it would be one of the most cost-effective drugs ever invented,” says the NHS. And that’s probably why it offers so many free exercise programmes for people to download from its website.

There’s a page of gym-free workouts, a five-minute wake-up

YouTube is filled with free exercise programmes, including yoga, aerobics and even bootcamp style workouts. CYCLE TO WORK

If your commute allows it, cycling to work can save you money on car running costs and boost your fitness. There’s even a Governmentsponsored Cycle To Work tax break scheme, which allows you to pay for a bike out of your pretax salary. That means you can save up to 42 per cent on the cost of a new bike if you don’t already have one. Of course, if your commute is particularly long or uphill then this is probably only an option if

your workplace has showers. But if you can make it work, then that’s 10 bursts of exercise a week.

PICK UP YOUR PHONE

Forget Angry Birds and Fruit Ninja, your phone can actually help you get fit for free – or for just a couple of quid. There are loads of fitness apps, some free and some cheap, and they can help you get into shape and stay there.

The best app for you depends on your goals, but our favourites include the Zombies Run! An app which encourages you to run by simulating a zombie chase – highly motivational.

THE 30-DAY ABS CHALLENGE

Want to transform your podgy belly into a toned tum? If you want to kick start your fitness journey workout programme that gets gradually harder then you can’t really do better than the 30 day abs challenge. It’s a month-long programme that gradually gets harder and harder (and then even harder. But only gradually, we promise) until your core is made of steel and you can do sit-ups and plank while watching TV. There are many different programmes available but this one is a very good example.

OUTDOOR GYMS

Gyms are expensive, some really expensive. And while it’s great news that there are now some where the membership is just £5 a month with a £10 joining fee, we think we can do better. In fact, we know we can.

How? Well, across the region you can find numerous free-to-use outside gyms, with a range of familiar equipment from cross trainers to leg presses for anyone looking to get toned, buff or just lose a few pounds.

Getting your mojo back A SCUNTHORPE Chiropractor is continuing its commitment to changing the lives of its patients. The Chirohealth Clinic, which operates on Old Brumby Street, is a team of chiropractors, massage therapists and support staff determined to provide their patients with an excellent service. The clinic has been successfully doing this since 2004 when it was opened by Julia Pullin, a doctor of chiropractic. After training in Bournemouth for five years, she cared for patients at clinics in Brigg and Grimsby before realising her vision to open her own clinic in Scunthorpe with the help of her husband Spencer. Patients have sought the services of Chirohealth after hearing of the help they have given to others with back and neck pain as well as headaches. They are frequently recommended by friends and family members who have had wonderful results after treatment, and have recently welcomed their 10,000th new patient to the clinic! Chiropractic care is primarily centred around the function of the spine and how it interacts with the spinal cord and nerves. The bones of the spine are called vertebra and are arranged one on top of the

16

other with shock absorbing discs between them. The spinal cord runs through a hole in each of these vertebrae and is therefore protected by them, whilst still being flexible. The nerves that leave your spinal cord, to connect your brain with all the different areas of your body, exit through gaps at each side formed by the position of the disc. The vertebrae and discs should glide smoothly over one another like a well-oiled machine. Any problem with this motion is what a chiropractor is looking for as it can cause inflammation and tight muscles which could put pressure on the nerves. Conditions of the spine can cause severe back pain, but

Celebrating the 10,000th new patient at the clinic

also other symptoms such as headaches, pins and needles and numbness. The symptoms can build up over many years and have a great impact on the sufferer’s quality of life. Chirohealth focuses on addressing the cause of these symptoms and also enabling patients to improve their health in other areas by making small and gradual changes to their lifestyle, including nutrition, activity levels, posture and stress. Chirohealth gives patients the tools to get their mojo back by giving a helping hand in these areas. They operate from a stunning

modern purpose built building. The building includes six bright and airy treatment rooms, an examination room, a media area, a coffee lounge and a huge reception area. There is also an abundance of free parking, making the service for patients even more convenient. In conjunction with the skills of a highly trained team, these services are designed to aid the comfort and relaxation of all visitors. STOP THE SILENCE DON’T STRUGGLE IN SILENCE, TIPS FOR CARERS FOR PEOPLE WITH DEMENTIA BEING a carer for a person living with dementia, whilst vital, can also be difficult and exhausting. It is important that, as a carer, you feel fully supported by not just the friends and family around you, but also by reaching out to the variety of groups and charities available to you, such as Carers UK and the Alzheimer’s Society. These organisations are there to help with any questions you may have, offer advice and support, as well as provide you with invaluable tips on how to care for a person living with dementia. There are also organisations like SuperCarers who can support you when you might need to take a well deserved break. We’ve compiled some of their advice below:

ACTIVITIES Engaging your loved one in regular activities such as jigsaw puzzles, painting or reading a newspaper together, will not only help to engage their brain but will also help reduce stress and anxiety as well as giving a sense of accomplishment and independence.

EXERCISE Encouraging gentle exercise as often as possible is incredibly beneficial for your loved one living with dementia (as well as you!). Physically it will maintain strong muscles, flexible joints and may prevent falls. Mentally it improves cognition, helps maintain a healthy heart and blood vessels, as well as reducing stress and feelings of isolation. Exercise can take on many forms, whether it’s a walk to the local shops together, some light gardening or gentle walks around a local park. It also gives you and your loved one a chance to spend some quality time together, away from the chores of daily

18

life, to talk and enjoy each other’s company.

LISTEN Ensure you allow a person living with dementia to have a voice. Listen to them, be patient and try to empathise as much as possible. Often a person living with dementia may have their opinion or voice overlooked, so it’s important to make them feel that they are being listened to.

CHOICE Offering choice to a loved one living with dementia will make them feel independent and maintain their self-confidence. However, try not to over complicate the choices, keep them to a minimum. For example, offer them a choice for breakfast, but keep the choice to two or three items, as any more could overwhelm and agitate your loved one.

FOOD Some people living with dementia may begin to struggle with food. They might have difficulties swallowing and chewing, or perhaps lose interest in eating altogether. Offer regular, small meals – roughly five to six times a day. If your loved one struggles with chewing, if possible, eat meals with them, as they can then copy you. Try to stick to healthy foods that offer nutrients and vitamins, such as leafy greens (which are high in folate and B9 – which improve cognition and reduce depression), or berries and cherries (these contain anthocyanin that protects the brain from further damage caused by free radicals). Beans and legumes are another favourite as these contain folate, iron, magnesium and potassium that can help with general body function and neuron firing. As well as a B vitamin that boosts acetylcholine (a neuro transmitter critical for brain function).

RESPITE CARE Caring for a loved one can be extremely hard, especially over busy periods when routines are

disrupted and additional care may be needed. Our advice is helpful in allowing you to manage your care responsibilities with your day-to-day life, however it is important to take some time to yourself every now and again. Home care whether booked as respite or on a more regular basis can take the pressure off you and allow you to get away for some

hard earned R&R. Organisations like SuperCarers can introduce you to reliable carers in your local area and help you provide the care your loved one deserves. For more information on this topic please head to activeminds.org who specialise in products and advice for dementia.

KEEP YOUR BRAIN YOUNG AND HEALTHY PROTECTING your mind from memory loss and ageing is something you can start at any age. Shona Wilkinson, nutritionist at Superfooduk.com, has some advice on how to keep your brain young by looking at your daily nutrition in the foods you eat along with supplements you can add into your routine. “Spinach is a good source of folic acid and vitamin C, both of which are needed for the production of neurotransmitters in the brain. Like other green vegetables, it is also a source of chlorophyll, which may favour the absorption of iron and promote red blood cell growth, to improve oxygen transport around the body and to the brain.” Dr. Marilyn Glenville PHD, one of the UK’s leading nutritionists, explains, “Supplements of Omega 3 fish oils can be helpful to take as we age, as DHA which is one of the major Omega 3 fatty acids in the brain seems to have the most protective effect against Alzheimer’s. “The DHA in Omega 3 fatty acids helps to prevent the plaque forming in the brain which is present in Alzheimer’s. The best source of Omega 3 is

oily fish such as salmon, tuna and mackerel. However if you still feel you’re not getting enough Omega 3 try taking a supplement such as Omega 3 support.” (£22.97, www.natural healthpractice.co.uk)” “High blood pressure is becoming increasingly common with age, particularly after the menopause when women no longer have the protective effect of oestrogen. Uncontrolled high blood pressure can put incredible strain on your heart and arteries and can also increase your risk of stroke and diabetes. Symptoms include frequent headaches, dizziness or blurred vision, but worryingly it can often manifest without symptoms. To reduce your risk of age-related high blood pressure, try and cut down on your salt intake. The recommended maximum intake of salt per day is six grams so try to replace with herbs and spices. Take note of hidden salt in foods – the British Heart Association estimates that three quarters of the salt we eat may come from processed foods. Even basic foods such as white bread and cereals contain salt, so be sure to read food labels carefully,” advises Dr Marilyn.

YOGA YOURSELF HEALTHY Twist and stretch your way to a healthier gut FROM stretching and strengthening to destressing, there’s a lot to love about yoga. But its benefits go much deeper than that - in fact, for Chris James, yoga instructor and author of new book Mind Body Cleanse, its effects are as much internal as external. Alongside mindfulness tips, vegan recipes and juices, Chris explores how certain yoga poses can help stimulate digestion. “There are many different poses that can help with your digestion,” he says. “Twists are quite remarkable because they not only massage, tone and rejuvenate your abdominal organs and promote digestion and peristalsis [the movement of food through the digestive tracts], but also improve the suppleness of the diaphragm. The spine also becomes more supple, allowing for correct spacing and alignment. This in turn improves blood-flow to the spinal nerves and increases energy levels.” Here, Chris shares 3 yoga poses and stretches that could help your digestion:

1. ARDHA MATSYENDRASANA  HALF LORD OF THE FISH

Sit on the floor with your legs straight in front of you, supported by a folded blanket or block. Slide your left foot under your right leg to the outside of your right hip. Lay the outside of the left leg on the floor. Exhale and twist toward the inside of the right thigh. Press the right hand against the floor just behind your right buttock, and set your left upper arm on the outside of your right thigh near the knee. Pull your front torso and inner right thigh together. With every inhalation, lift a little more through the sternum,

20

pushing the fingers against the floor to help. Twist a little more with every exhalation. Be sure to distribute the twist evenly throughout the entire length of the spine. Stay for 30 seconds to one minute, then release with an exhalation, return to the starting position, and repeat to the left for the same length of time.

2. PARIVRITTA TRIKONASANA  REVOLVING THREE ANGLE OR TRIANGLE POSTURE

From standing, turn your left foot in 45-60 degrees to the right and your right foot out to the right 90 degrees. Align the right heel with the left heel. Firm your thighs and turn your right thigh outward, so that the centre of the right kneecap is in line with the centre of the right ankle. Square your hip points as much as possible with the front edge of your mat. As you bring the left hip around to the right, resist the head of the left thigh bone back and firmly ground the left heel. Draw the left hand and arm as far forward as possible. With an exhalation, turn your torso further to the right and extend forward over the front leg. Reach your left hand down, either to the floor (inside or outside the foot) or, if the floor’s too far away, onto a block positioned against your inner right foot. Beginners should keep their head in a neutral position, looking straight forward, or look at the floor. More experienced students can turn the head and gaze up at the top thumb. From the centre of the back, between the shoulder blades, press the arms away from the torso. Bring most of your weight to bear on the back heel and the front hand. Stay in this pose anywhere from 30 seconds to one minute. Exhale, release the twist, and bring your torso back to upright with an inhalation.

Repeat for the same length of time with the legs reversed, twisting to the left.

3. SARVANGASANA  SHOULDER STAND POSE

Fold two or more firm blankets into rectangles measuring about 1ft by 2ft, and stack them one on top of the other. Or use blocks. You can place a sticky mat over the blankets or blocks to help the upper arms stay in place while in the pose. Bend your elbows and draw them toward each other. Lay the backs of your upper arms on the blanket and spread your palms against the back of your torso. Raise your pelvis over the shoulders, so that the torso is relatively perpendicular to the floor. Walk your hands up your back toward the floor without letting the elbows slide too much wider than shoulder width. Inhale and lift your bent knees and straighten your legs toward the ceiling. Beginners, stay in the pose for about 30 seconds. Gradually add five to 10 seconds to your stay every day or so until you can comfortably hold the pose for three minutes. Then continue for three minutes each day for a week or two, until you feel relatively comfortable in the pose. Again, gradually and five to 10 seconds onto your stay every day or so until you can comfortably hold the pose for five minutes. To come down, exhale, bend your knees into your torso again, and roll your back torso slowly and carefully onto the floor, keeping the back of your head on the floor. If you have any existing health problems or injuries, remember to always seek professional advice before embarking on any new exercise regime. Mind Body Cleanse by Chris James is published by Vermilion, priced £14.99. Available now.

BRUSH UP ON YOUR KIDS’ DENTAL HEALTH

Looking after her teeth has always been important to model and presenter, Jodie Kidd - and she’s determined to pass the habit onto her son...

10 FAMILY BRUSHING TIPS

But with so many headlines warning us about the damaging effects of sugar-laden diets, and let’s be honest - teeth-brushing isn’t usually top of kids’ favourite activities (not to mention the joy of visiting the dentist!), looking after little’uns dental hygiene can be a challenge. Jodie, 38, has joined forces with the Big Family Brush Up dental campaign. Here, she tells us what it’s all about, and how she gets Indio to look after his teeth.

WHEN DID YOU START INDIO’S ORAL HEALTH ROUTINE?

“As soon as his first little cute tooth came along. I was there with the tiny toothbrush cleaning that all important first tooth,” Jodie recalls. “As a parent, you have to look after your children and teeth are a massive part of that. Even though they lose them at an early age and get their adult teeth, it’s important to ensure they’re learning how to care for their teeth by mirroring you and

that it’s ingrained into their daily routine from an early age.”

DO YOU EVER HAVE PROBLEMS GETTING HIM TO CLEAN HIS TEETH?

“Because I introduced oral health care to Indio at such an early age, and he watches me do it, cleaning our teeth is normal practice for him. It’s just part of his routine. When he finishes his supper, he goes upstairs and has a nice bath, brushes his teeth and then it’s story time. There have been a few times when I’ve forgotten and he’s got into bed and said, ‘I haven’t brushed my teeth yet’. It’s been part of his bed and bath routine since he was a wee nipper.”

DO YOU LET YOUR SON HAVE SUGARY TREATS?

“Kids love chocolate and sweets and I would never deny Indio he’s a 5-year-old little boy, and if he does well at school his treat might be to get an ice-cream or a packet of whatever sweets. It’s a treat, a real treat. It’s all a balance.”

HOW OFTEN DO YOU AND INDIO GO TO THE DENTIST, AND IS HE FRIGHTENED?

“We go to the dentist every six months as a family, and Indio’s not frightened,” says Jodie. “I go every couple of months to the

hygienist, and Indio’s always come in with me, so it’s just a normal thing. I haven’t had anything traumatic (yet!), so it’s always been a nice thing to do and just part of life. “I’ve always been very conscious of caring for my teeth. I’ve spent most of my life as a model, and having a good smile and looking after my teeth has always been really important for my career. “I seriously damaged my two front teeth in a riding accident - a horse’s head banged into my mouth - and I had to have veneers. Not wearing a mouthguard when doing sports

PA Photo/Denplan

AS a model, Jodie Kidd’s winning smile has graced magazine covers all over the world. She’s always looked after her teeth, and is determined her fiveyear-old son Indio follows suit.

1. Get children to brush as soon as they wake up, not after breakfast. Tooth enamel is softer for up to an hour after eating or drinking sugary or acidic things and can be damaged if teeth are brushed. 2. In the evening, get children to brus h at least an hour after dinner. 3. Choose a fun toothbrush with thei r favourite character on. 4. Use a suitable fluoride toothpaste for their age: under 3 years - 1000ppm; over 3 years - 135 0-1500ppm. 5. Get children to fill in a brushing char t. 6. Brush to a special song: BrushDJ (www.brushdj.com) plays two minutes of music from your exis ting playlists and is a great way to get children to brush for the recommended time. 7. Children should brush for two min utes but they often rush, so some teeth surfaces are missed. Get your child to imagine dividing their mouth into four main sections and brush each section for 30 seconds. 8. If you think they’ve missed any teet h, follow up by brushing their teeth yourself. 9. To help reach the back teeth, get your child to pretend to be a lion or dinosaur and give you a big roar. This helps them open their mouth wide for you. 10. Get children to spit the toothpa ste out after brushing but don’t rinse. Rinsing washes away the protective fluoride. is a big regret.”

WHAT ARE YOUR TIPS FOR HELPING CHILDREN BRUSH THEIR TEETH WELL?

“We all use electric toothbrushes and Indio has a Disney Cars Lightning McQueen one. By using that, and some nice tasting children’s fluoride toothpaste, the process is age-appropriate. “Now he’s five, he’s starting to brush independently, but I still go round his mouth afterwards with the brush to check he’s reached everywhere, praising him for how well he’s done.”

takes its inspiration from the lofthouse apartment-style living in the New York neighbourhood of the same name. The TriBeCa has a central, lightfilled, airy living space with the adults’ and children’s bedrooms either side. The open-plan kitchen and living area has an apartment feel: with timber-effect walls; a 55-inch screen; American-style fridge/freezer; and panoramic bi-fold doors. The adults’ bedroom has boutique hotel features, such as a flatscreen TV, sumptuous bedding, and a stand-alone bath-tub, as well as a separate ensuite. The children’s bedroom has bunk-beds complete with dens underneath, screens and power points for charging their tech, and astro-turf-inspired flooring. No other holiday park has any caravans like this in their fleet. The timber-effect walls and huge windows create a jungle feel and the astro-turf-inspired flooring carries on the theme of bringing the outside in. The TriBeCa also has its own deck, for watching the world go by on, glass in hand, mind switched off, and some come with a private hot tub. STAYING HEALTHY AFTER YOU’VE PASSED THE BIG FIVE-OH Simon Rimmer's eight top tips for staying healthy

CHEF Simon Rimmer is a big fan of surrounding himself with food and family. Simon, 54, always looks the picture of health on Channel 4’s Sunday Brunch, but what’s his secret? Apparently, it’s all down to food, family and fun. Simon, who lives in Manchester with his wife and kids, reveals how he keeps himself young and happy...

1. EAT WELL

26

“I’m very conscious about what I eat. Food is an important part of my life as a chef, and I’m constantly aware of trying to eat well. I don’t really eat processed foods - I think keeping your cooking simple and using natural, healthy ingredients is important,” says Simon. “Eggs are great, because they’re high in protein, essential vitamins and minerals, and they’re also completely versatile. We always have eggs in the cupboard. I

also eat loads of oily fish, such as salmon, haddock and mackerel.”

2. EXERCISE FOR MENTAL AND PHYSICAL WELLBEING “I find exercise is great for my mental health. Both the gym and boxing are activities that help me focus my mind, and I can feel the beneficial effect mentally as well as physically. You have to look after yourself. I get up most days at 5:30am to get to the gym for a

6am workout. I also have a really active family; we have a dog and live by a river, which inspires us to get out and about every day.”

3. LAUGH LOTS “When filming Sunday Brunch, Tim Lovejoy and I are constantly laughing. It’s important to laugh every day, and I’m fortunate to have a job where it’s easy to do that.”

4. COOK WITH YOUR KIDS “Having kids keeps me feeling

PA Photo/EggRecipes/Charlie Richards

young and active. I’ve been teaching my son Hamish to cook, and he can now make a mean omelette. Cooking with kids is a great way to spend time doing something where they learn important life skills, but it’s also good fun.”

5. CHALLENGE YOURSELF “It’s important to keep your brain active and interested. In my job, I’m fortunate that I meet lots of interesting people and have many experiences that keep me

continually learning something new. From my TV work to the restaurant, there’s always something different around the corner and a new challenge to meet. Teaching people to cook keeps the brain sharp.”

6. EAT TOGETHER “Family keeps me grounded. I’m happiest on a Sunday evening, after I’ve finished filming Sunday Brunch and I’m back at home. I cook a big meal for the family to share, something like my

shakshuka, a Middle Eastern spicy egg dish, or Bobotie, a South African curried bake, and we sit around and catch up on the week. It’s important downtime that I relish, and there is nothing better than sharing a meal together.”

7. GET SOME REST “I need at least six hours of sleep a night. As I’m up for the gym at 5am, I try to get to bed at 10.30pm.”

8. MAKE TIME TO RELAX “It’s important to keep perspective and find ways to manage stress. Everyday life now is so hectic, but you have to make time to relax. You also have to do things that make you happy. Cooking, exercise, music and reading are all things I do to release tension.” Simon Rimmer is a British Lion eggs ambassador. Ingredients: (Serves 8) 350g shortcrust pastry 1tsp paprika Plain flour, for dusting 4 medium eggs 150ml whole milk 200g Branston pickle (small chunks) 250g mature Cheddar cheese, grated

Method: 1. Take the block of shortcrust pastry, flatten it out slightly and sprinkle all over with the paprika. Fold the edges in over the top, then knead the pastry until all the paprika is incorporated. If the pastry starts to stick to the worktop, dust with flour. 2. Wrap the pastry in cling film and place in the fridge for 15 minutes. Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 180°C/160°C fan/gas 4 and put a baking tray in to heat up. 3. Dust the work surface with flour and roll out the pastry to the thickness of a pound coin and large enough to cover the base and sides of a 23cm diameter, 3-4cm deep, loose-bottomed flan tin. 4. Line the inside of the tin with the rolled-out pastry. Press it into the edges, right into the grooves, leaving some overhang. Pierce the base all over with a fork. This stops it puffing up while baking. 5. Cover the base and sides with

THE good old cheese and pickle sandwich has been elevated to new levels by Nadiya Hussain in her new cookbook, Nadiya’s British Food Adventure. “That combination of strong cheese and tart chunky pickle is my inspiration for this recipe. Cut through the cheesy filling and you’ll find a hidden layer of pickle waiting to tantalise your taste buds, with a hint of heat from the pastry.” It’s perfect for picnics this summer. a large piece of baking paper and fill with baking beans to weigh the pastry down. Take the hot baking tray out of the oven and place the prepared tart tin on it. 6. Bake for 25 minutes, then take out of the oven, remove the paper and baking beans, and bake for another 15 minutes. 7. Meanwhile, put your eggs into a jug and lightly whisk. Add the milk and stir. 8. Once the tart shell is out of the oven, spread the pickle all over the base and cover evenly with the grated cheese. 9. Pour in the milky egg mixture and place the whole tray back in the oven, on the middle shelf, for 25-30 minutes, until the filling is set and golden, with just a very slight wobble in the middle. 10. Once the tart is cool enough to handle, slice off the pastry overhang using a sharp serrated knife. Leave to cool in the tin for 30 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

SUMMER FRUIT SEMIFREDDO

Summer Fruit Semifreddo Ingredients: 400g frozen mixed summer fruits 100g caster sugar 3tbsp water 7 slices of white bread (about 170g), crusts removed, halved lengthways 600ml double cream 2tbsp golden syrup

Method: 1. Put the frozen fruit, sugar and water into a medium pan and bring to the boil, then take off the heat. You don’t want the fruit to break down too much but you want to extract as much liquid as possible. 2. Drain the fruit through a sieve, making sure to catch all the liquid in a bowl. Use the back of a spoon to push through as much liquid as possible. Then leave the liquid to cool completely. 3. Line a 20cm round Pyrex dish with cling film. 4. Dip each piece of bread quickly into the fruit juice mixture and place around the edge of the dish vertically, slightly overlapping each piece with the next to prevent leaking. Do this all around the edges - you should have one piece left. Break that piece down to size, then dip it in the fruit juice and place it in the base of the

Add the fruit and ripple through gently. 6. Put the cream mixture into the lined bowl and spread it level on top. If any of the bread pieces come up higher than the top of the cream, simply fold them over. Cover the top with cling film and place in the freezer for three hours. 7. To turn out, tip onto a plate and remove all the cling film. Cut into wedges and serve.

SO WHAT’S THE KEY TO A TRULY HAPPY RETIREMENT? Facebook friends and taking the time to be romantic, these are the top things you can do to make sure your retirement years are the happiest they can be...

THREE holidays a year, no rush hour commute, and enjoying the latest tech for on-demand TV and movies are just some of the things that go a long way to keeping us happy during retirement, according to new research from retirement specialist Age Partnership. The recent study by the retirement specialist delved into the happiness and unhappiness

32

of retirees in the UK and discovered that the majority (80 per cent) are happy with their retirement – with 20 per cent going as far to say they were blissfully happy. Of those who deem their life to be a happy one – over half (54 per cent) put this down to being able to go out mid-week, and almost one third (32 per cent) enjoy having a good laugh with friends over a glass of wine. Other common factors to emerge were an active sex life (20 per cent), seeing the grandchildren at least once a month (31 per cent), being able to keep the house and garden in order (58 per cent), and keeping in shape (27 per cent). However, the best thing about being retired is not having to wake up to an alarm clock, almost two thirds (64 per cent) enjoying this freedom, the poll by Age Partnership found. Having the entire day to yourself (58 per cent) and having separate hobbies to your other half (18 per cent) are also ways older Brits get the most out of their golden years, as well as having time to read books (54 per cent) and catching up with old pals on

Facebook (13 per cent). Tim Loy, chief executive at Age Partnership, commented: “The fact that so many retirees are enjoying their free time is encouraging. And it’s great to see that so many of the common factors amongst a happy retirement are active, social activities – improving overall quality of life. “Here at Age Partnership, we believe people who at or approaching retirement deserve to get the best out of life. Juggling finances and planning for the future can be challenging which is why it’s vital that people are equipped with all of the knowledge and advice to enable them to make informed decisions, and we are here to do just that. “Once the finances are in line, filling their days with what they enjoy doing is clearly the key to enjoying the retirement years – and many of the things in this list don’t have to cost a penny.” The research also showed the typical retiree has a monthly income of £1,629. The biggest expenditure for retirees was the food shop, which came in at £155 per month. The research also revealed that for a happy retirement, £38 a month is spent on drinks with friends, £58 is dedicated to eating out and £28 is spent on day trips to museums and theatres. Typically, £40 is spent on grooming products, the poll of pensioners found.

KEY TO A HAPPY RETIREMENT ACCORDING TO CURRENT RETIREES • Not having to wake up to an alarm • Not having to travel anywhere during rush hour • Spending time in the great outdoors • Having entire days to yourself • Keeping the house and garden in good order • Having time to read the books you want • Going for a day out midweek • Eating healthily • Sitting in the garden with a glass of something • Turning your hand to gardening • Having at least one hobby • At least three holidays or mini breaks a year • Having close friends • Having a good laugh with friends over a glass of wine • Eating out twice a month • Seeing the grandchildren once a month • Keeping in shape • Regular shopping trips • Visiting friends on impulse • Having time apart from your other half now and again • Going to museums • A regular sex life • Attending a matinee at the local cinema on a whim • Visiting the theatre • Having separate hobbies to my other half • Having time for romance • Catching up with old friends via Facebook • Having Netflix

Carelink – there for you all day every day PROVIDING YOU WITH PEACE OF MIND WITH LIFETIME ALARM UNITS, THERE FOR YOU 24 HOURS A DAY, 365 DAYS A YEAR WHEN urgent help is needed, a call alarm system can be like ‘a fifth emergency service’ to vulnerable people. Carelink is a charity based at Centre4, in Wootton Road, Grimsby, which installs and monitors lifeline alarm units, with trained staff available to answer calls 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The simple devices can not only potentially save lives but also give freedom to people who wish to live independently with the reassurance that they can quickly seek assistance in the event of an incident or medical emergency. The alarms, also known as telecare, connect to a telephone line which they use to connect to specialised monitoring system.

RESPONDING TO EMERGENCIES FOR 21 YEARS Explaining how the devices

work, Carelink chief officer Lynda Bringloe said: “We’re North East Lincolnshire’s only telecare control centre and have been for 21 years. “It sits there doing absolutely nothing until somebody needs it. It has a loudspeaker and microphone in it, an emergency button and a portable pendant which can be worn around the neck or wrist. “They’ve moved on a bit designwise over the years. They started off as huge telephone things with soap-on-a-rope-size pendants but the system still does the same thing – you need help, you press your button and it puts a call through to the control centre. It opens up two-way speech and we can call out a contact like a neighbour, a GP or an ambulance if needed.

ALWAYS SOMEONE THERE TO TALK TO “Or it might just be that they want reassurance – there’s always somebody here to talk to.”

Alongside fall detectors and medication dispensers, the call alarm system is just one of a number of pieces of technology now available to help people living with illnesses, disabilities or in isolation to be independent. Carelink currently has around 3,000 clients in north east Lincolnshire. Many pay a small subscription fee for the system though some may be eligible to have the alarm free of charge. Lynda added: “Some of those are very high need while some we never hear from one month to the other. “What they’re getting out of it is the reassurance that it’s there. They’re not sat in their house thinking ‘what if?’ “We’re the man in the middle for the client at one end and the service they need at the other – we’re the fifth emergency service! “But it’s not all about emergencies, because something

that’s an emergency to one person won’t be to another.” For more information about the Carelink service or would like a demonstration, call 01472 312312, e-mail admin@ care-link.org.uk or visit www. care-link.org.uk

Care assessments were undertaken for individuals and their carers to determine the level of eligible need in accordance with the Care Act 2014 and financial assessments to identify the contribution a person may be asked to make towards any service they receive. A referral was received in August 2016 for a lady who lived alone and had no family to support her. Information was obtained from her and numerous letters and statements in her possession, showed that she had more than £10,000 in savings in January 2015 but by the time of the referral, her savings had reduced to £1,500. The lady had been receiving calls from telesales companies selling herbal products which she had purchased; there were invoices totalling £2,600 with one invoice alone for over £500. The lady did not know what the items were that she was purchasing. She had also agreed to change her telephone services, which resulted in her having two telephone lines in the property. She had purchased a two-seater sofa, an electric rise and recline heated chair. The cost of these purchases was £4,670. There were not enough savings left to cover the purchase and she entered into a credit agreement for £3,000 - which she was unable to keep up the repayments on. How focus handled this: • Applied to DWP to become her appointee and Court of Protection to be appointed as her deputy • Applied for Attendance Allowance, Pension Credit and Council Tax Benefit • Discussed with the service user for the herbal product purchases, telephone line provider and the sofa credit agreement • Cancelled the phone line provider services, changed her telephone number to be listed as ex-directory and registered with the TPS service • The lady agreed for focus to take her cash card and cheque book into safekeeping so she could no longer give her bank details out over the telephone • focus accompanied her to the bank to cancel all unnecessary direct debits and the bank placed an alert on her account

• Contacted the telephone line provider and sofa loan company and requested that they write off any outstanding debt • Contacted North East Lincolnshire Council to apply for a Central Heating and Boiler grant, (unfortunately, the service user did not meet the criteria but under the Housing Act they were obliged to install the system and recharge the cost back to her). Due to her financial circumstances, it was agreed for the debt to be charged against her property so until she sells her home, the debt will lay dormant with no interest added.

WHERE WE ARE NOW:

focus visits on a weekly basis to handle her shopping and personal expenditure along with encouraging her to participate in local activities to improve her social interaction. Maximising her income has enabled her to save £4,500. Her home is now heated and she has hot water. The telesales calls have ceased so she is no longer vulnerable. focus community interest company (CIC) was the first independent adult social work practice in the country and provides all of the statutory social work functions across North East Lincolnshire, these include: • Assessment and review • Long-term case management • Safeguarding and • Mental Capacity Act & Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards Working in partnership, with the CCG, GPs and health providers, focus CIC operates an integrated approach to service delivery, including a health and social care single point of access, a continuing health care assessment and review service along with making arrangements for care to be provided to individuals. focus CIC operates within the local community and looks at what support the individual can access within the community and focuses on their abilities, rather than their disabilities, aiming to promote independence and wellbeing. The homes strive to deliver the highest standards of care, and the mealtime experience and activities within the home form a key part of the service. A newly acquired minibus, shared between the homes, has enabled a much more vibrant activity programme, with residents going

on regular excursions within the area and further afield. Grimsby Grange & Manor both have ‘good’ reports from the Care Quality Commission, which has visited several times over the past year. A recent 1940s celebration in the home for National Care Home Open Day was enjoyed by the Mayor - with all staff dressed in attire from the era. The CQC reports highlight the positive and relaxed environments within the homes, where residents are encouraged to participate in activities and to maintain their independence. Ratings are given based on observations of the home by an unannounced CQC team and on conversations with staff, residents and their relatives.

Grimsby Grange is a specialist dementia home, with décor and fixtures tailored to stimulate memory and familiarisation within the home. A monthly dementia café has been launched on the last Wednesday of the month, a relaxed and informal location for the families and friends of those living with dementia to meet, exchange information and offer support to one another. Eaton Court, within a short distance of Grimsby Town train station and close to several parks, is a modern home, and provides 24-hour nursing care across two floors. The home has 43 en-suite rooms, all decorated to high standards, with modern furnishings and

You’ll be free financially ‘seven-tually’ RETIREMENT FINANCIAL SPECIALISTS HAVE FOUND THAT MOST MILLENNIALS WILL REACH 70 BEFORE THEY ACHIEVE FINANCIAL FREEDOM, SO WHAT TO DO?

THOSE who were born in the ‘baby boom’ era are in luck, and are likely to have already achieved true financial freedom. However, if you arrived after 1 September 1953, the future is perhaps not looking so bright. The millennial generation - those born between the early 80s and 00s - are set to face a longer financial struggle as they grow older. This is according to a new study carried out by financial specialists Age Partnership, which set out to find the true age of ‘financial freedom’ for the later generations. The study unearthed some interesting statistics along the way... So millennials (otherwise known as generation Y) began working at 21 and spent their younger years saving up for a house deposit, do not take out a mortgage until they reach 30 (on average). And to add fuel to the fire, once they have the mortgage, they will spend 50 per cent of their entire monthly income on bills alone.

THEN AND NOW

So if we take a look at earnings, the average wage for the ‘baby boomers’ started at £10,140.96 in their first job, aged 19. They were then given around a 1.9 per cent pay increase year on year resulting in an average lifetime earning of £599,429.42. If we compare this to the millennial generation, who have a starting wage of around £13,533.12 at age 21 and yearly pay increases of 3.7 per cent. Their average lifetime earnings are up at £1,803,718.11. Then mortgages. Those born between 1944 and 1964 usually took out their first mortgage at the age of 22, with houses at the time costing around £4,975 at the start of the 1970. These mortgages, the study found, typically took around 33 years to pay off. This is where everything drastically changes. Millennials who battle housing costs upwards of £220,000 on average, don’t take a mortgage out until they hit 30. It might sound like the baby boomers had it easy when buying a home, but they were faced with fluctuating, high mortgage rates of up to 16 per cent, while millenials are enjoying low rates of around four per cent.

RAISING COSTS

Research also found that the average age of a first-time mum in 1980 was 23.5 years old, compared to millennials who are waiting until they reach on average 28.6. The cost of raising a child who reached adulthood in 2003 was £140,398, while the starting costs for Millennials having children in 2013 starts at £222,458 taking into account factors such as childcare, holidays, hobbies and food, and we are yet to see how the economy will shape the true amount spent once these children reach age 21 in 2034. By the time parents hit 50, most of the baby boomers’ kids had moved out and become financially independent. This age reaches 58.6 for millennial parents, as it is predicted that their children will be living at home until the age of 30 (at least), further increasing the cost of having children for millennials, from an already hefty 25.2 per cent of lifetime income. Age Partnership’s study revealed that the age of retirement for baby boomers was just before their 60th birthday, but unfortunately millennials won’t be retiring until the age of nearly 70 - or 68 to be exact. Not only that, but Generation Y also incur an additional cost of travelling for work, which can add up to a grand total of £90,826 over their entire working life. All of this combined means that the Millennial generation will have paid off their mortgage, finished shelling out for their children, and finally retired, just one week before they reach the ripe old age of 70 – if they’re lucky! Tim Loy, chief executive at Age Partnership, commented: “Retirement can be an opportunity to live the way you have dreamed about all your working life, whether that be taking up an interesting hobby, or travelling the world. Juggling finances as we come across necessary obstacles in our lives can be challenging, which is why it’s important for people to have access to information which will help them to make informed decisions about their future. “Having a good idea of when you will be financially free can help you to enjoy your retirement to the fullest, getting the best quality from life, which is exactly what we aim for when helping our customers.”

HOW TO MAKE YOUR FINAL FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS

It’s one of the hardest topics to bring up in conversation, but sorting the details and expressing preferences before you pass is important... WHILE death is yet to make it to dinnertable conversation, it’s important that families take the time to openly discuss their wishes well in advance. It can be difficult to know where to start, but having a conversation about the practical arrangements for your funeral and how it should be paid for ahead of time will help provide some peace of mind for both you and your family that what you want can - and will - be carried out. Having to deal with paying for a funeral can be highly stressful for affected families and can distract them from grieving - so ensuring you have a plan in place could go a long way in preventing any further heartache, should the worst happen.

UNDERSTAND THE

FINANCIAL COSTS AND HAVE A PLAN IN PLACE

The cost of a funeral can often come as a shock. In fact, the average funeral in the UK costs £3,897, predicted to rise to £5,000 by 2020 by the International Longevity Centre (ILC) – so it’s important you and your family know this in advance and have the appropriate plans in place. This way, when it comes to discussing financial planning with family, those closest to you can rest assured this cost has been accounted for. Some pre-paid funeral plans will guarantee all of the services contained within the plan, fixed at today’s prices, so starting today will save you money over time.

START BY WRITING A LETTER

If you, or your family, find it too emotionally painful to discuss end-of-life, use a letter, tape, or

video recording as a starting point. It may be easier for people to hear what you have to say if you are not there and afterwards they may feel more comfortable sitting down to talk with you. Think about the reasons why this conversation is so important despite the fact that it might be a hard topic to discuss at first, you and your family will be glad you did in the long run.

MAKE THE MOST OF FREE WILLS MONTH

If you’re part of the 35 per cent of the UK who haven’t already made a will, make the most of Free Wills Month. Twice a year in March and October, a number of charities come together to offer members of the public aged 55 and over the opportunity to have their wills written or updated free of charge. Not only does having an up to

date will ensure your wishes are respected, it also avoids difficult decisions and legal complications for your loved ones. Use this month as an opportunity to have a conversation with your family, and to think about the plans you have in place.

DISCUSS YOUR WISHES

Dealing with the difficulties of organising a loved one’s funeral is often made a little easier if you’re safe in the knowledge the plans you’re making are what they would have wanted. While we rarely openly talk about death or our own funerals, discussing the possibility of one of you passing could help ease the pain should the time ever come. Otherwise, you’ll never know if they’ll want a velvet coffin, 90s disco music or a send-off themed around their favourite football club.
