THE BUMP AND YOU The time that a woman is pregnant is a unique experience, priorities completely shift, routines change and emotions are undoubtedly running high whilst you prepare your lives for a new little arrival. Keeping fit and healthy is the key to having a happy pregnancy and there’s certain things you can do to make sure everything runs smoothly up to your due date.

GET ANTENATAL

There’s multiple benefits to attending a few antenatal classes before your due date, not only will it help to calm your nerves but they’ll give you an extra boost of confidence as you approach the big day. They are also a brilliant way to get to know your fellow bumps, meet women in similar positions, have a chat through any issues you’re having and often find that you’re not alone in them. These relationships have the added bonus of having a group of people with little ones a few months down the road, and are perfect for mid-morning coffee dates. Then of course, they’re educational, we all heard the story of the stork when we were smaller but we now know better and are assured that unfortunately that’s not the case. At the classes you will find out all about the labour process including the different options you can take, which you can then use to create your own birthing plan.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED

Ask your midwife, health visitor or your GP for details of any classes around your area. Think about what the main reason you want to attend is to make sure that you get what you want out of the classes. Finally, have an ask around early to make sure that you don’t miss out on a spot as they’re often popular so get your name down soon!

WHAT TO EXPECT...

6

WHEN YOU’RE EXPECTING

Classes usually start around eight to ten weeks before your due date, and are normally held once a week. Some are solely for the woman but others invite along friends or partners. Popular topics that you’ll learn about are; relaxation techniques, exercises to keep you fit during pregnancy, healthy diets, labour itself, caring for your baby, your health post-birth and emotions during pregnancy and after.

GET MOVING WITH YOUR BUMP

There’s a lot of activity that is open to you while you’re pregnant, it doesn’t mean you have to spend the next nine months on the sofa with your partner catering to your every craving – although that does sound like an ideal Friday night. Depending on what your normal exercise routine looks like will determine what your pregnancy fitness plan is. If you’re a runner and always have been it’s probably OK to maintain that, but just lower the intensity levels the nearer your due date you get. Remember to consult your GP or midwife before you begin any exercise you’re planning.

PREGNANCY YOGA

This is the perfect time to both get in touch with your mind and your body and the perfect workout for this is... yes, you guessed it, yoga or pilates. There are a few

pregnancy specific classes around so keep an eye out for those, otherwise, you can often let your instructor know

(depending on how prominent your bump is) and they can show you how to adapt the poses for you. These classes will be invaluable durIng labour, with the deep breathing exercises and relaxation techniques. They also aim to improve your posture through stretching and strengthening exercises which should help to relieve any pregnancy related aches and pains you might be experiencing.

RUNNING AND OTHER AEROBIC EXERCISE

If you ran before you were pregnant you should be fine to continue doing so without doing any harm, but if you weren’t a runner, don’t start now. If you take part in classes at the gym, and would like to continue doing so just let your instructor know and they should be able to modify some of the

workouts so that they are more suitable to you. As you approach your due date you should be trying to reduce your overall activity but you can speak to your GP or exercise instructor for more specifics.

WEIGHT TRAINING

It’s good news if you’re already weight training. As your bump grows, your body naturally undergoes it’s own weight training with your legs gaining more strength an your spinal muscles tightening to keep your body upright. The arms are a little left out of this workout, but don’t worry once you’ve given birth they’ll get plenty of training rocking your new baby all day (and night) long.

SWIMMING

Water is great for all things pregnancy, and especially exercising in it. It’s fab for your circulation as the pressure stimulates blood flow and reduces any swelling (goodbye cankles!) Invest in a good pair of goggles so you can swim with your head down to relax your back. If you’re relatively new to swimming, be sure to check out your local pool and many have classes with pregnancy exercises.

Eat right and grow yourself the best bump SOME FOODS MIGHT BE OFF THE MENU BUT THAT DOESN’T MEAN YOU CAN’T EAT DELICIOUS MEALS COOKING for you and your bump doesn’t have to be a challenge. Yes, there are foods you need to avoid and yes, you’ll crave that brand of sweets you had once when you were 15 at 2am on Thursday morning but that’s what all the fun’s about!

minerals and vitamins that are necessary for the healthy development of your bump, and for your health. Two to start with are folic acid, found in foods such as spinach and citrus fruits, and vitamin D, found in fatty fish, orange juice and cereals.

There’s foods that you need to keep away from during your pregnancy, such as unpasteurised rind cheeses and pate, along with staying away from alcohol as much as possible and being cautious when it comes to anything containing eggs. It’s mainly to stop any bacteria or substances from harming the unborn baby. It’s worth noting that it’s the same deal when you’re breast feeding as small amounts of what you’re eating can pass to your baby, so alcohols still off the menu unfortunately. But enough about what you can’t eat, and more about what you should be making sure is on your plate. Your baby needs a well rounded diet as you do, but there’s certain

Whisk together 3/4 egg whites and add your vegetables, such as mushrooms, spinach, tomatoes, potatoes (for a Spanish twist), sugar-snap peas, peppers and then sprinkle some parmesan.

HEALTH BOOST Egg-white Veggie Omelette

Curly Kale with Roast Chicken After you’ve oven roasted your chicken, fry onion, rosemary, chilli an garlic in a pan slowly, add in your curly kale and season with salt. Leave to cook gently and remove the rosemary stalks when the mixture is soft. Carve your chicken and cover with your delicious topping.

COMFORT FOOD Chicken pie Use your leftover chicken to create the ultimate comfort

food - a chicken pie. The sauce is the one that makes this one. Heat butter and a spoonful of flour until toasty, add chicken stock. Cook until simmering and add three spoons of cream, lemon juice and tarragon. Fry your vegetables along with your chicken and add to the sauce filling complete! Get your hands on some readymade puff pasty and you’re flying, making this perhaps the quickest and simplest, best tasting pie around.

Lentil soup OK, OK it might not sound too appealing but it’s warm, filling and packed full of goodness for your bump. Heat olive oil in a pan and add in carrot, celery, onion and a pinch of salt. Leave these to cook until soft, then add your lentils maybe even a bay leaf for some extra flavour. Then add water and enjoy!

LATE NIGHT SUGAR CRAVINGS Chocolate ice-cream sundae This ones the easy one of the

lot, just throw together all the chocolate ice-cream you have left over in the freezer and add caramel sauce, or maybe some blueberries or raspberries if you want a slightly healthier version.

Homemade popcorn Add coconut oil and your popcorn kernels into a large pot, cover and cook over a medium heat. Keep an eye on the pot so you know when the majority are popped, it should be around five minutes. Enjoy!

BUMP FRIENDLY BEVERAGES Raspberry fizz Simply blend together one and a half raspberry juice with three spoonfuls of raspberry sherbert with half a cup of carbonated water. Perfect for a summer beverage and is even childfriendly!

Virgin Strawberry Daiquiri You’ll need about three ounces of frozen strawberries, a sweet and sour mix pack, some grenadine syrup and ice. Blend together and play with the ingredients until you’re happy with the consistency. Then voila!

Ramya Kumar and her son Rishi, who has autism and a related learning disability. Picture: PA Photo/ Handout

Feeling isolated is more common than you think... SOCIAL ISOLATION CAN BE A BIG PROBLEM FOR MANY FAMILIES, ESPECIALLY THOSE WITH CHILDREN WHO HAVE LEARNING DISABILITIES. LISA SALMON REPORTS ON MENCAP’S CAMPAIGN TO MAKE US ALL MORE UNDERSTANDING IT’S all too easy to avoid what you don’t understand. But when that’s a child with a learning disability, a wrong reaction can be devastating for both the child and their parents. New research by Mencap has found that 63% of parents of children with a learning disability have had to miss social engagements in the last year, due to concerns about how people will react to their child, and 70% have felt unwelcome when they are out in public with their child. Disturbingly, another 21% said their child had been asked to leave a public place because of behaviour resulting from their learning disability. As there are 15,000 children born every year with a learning disability and, in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, currently around 119,000 children under the age of seven who have such a disability, these insensitive reactions are having a huge impact on many lives. Despite 43% of parents saying attitudes towards people with learning disabilities have improved, many say the public are still ‘afraid of what they don’t understand’; 41% say they feel other parents are ‘somewhat or very unhappy’ for a child with learning disabilities to spend time with their children, and half think

8

public attitudes towards children with a learning disability are negative.

DON’T JUDGE

Mencap, the charity for people with learning disabilities, is calling on the public to be more accepting towards children with a learning disability - to think and not judge, and instead offer support to help end the isolation parents of children with learning disabilities feel. Rossanna Trudgian, Mencap head of campaigns, says although public attitudes may have improved in the 70 years Mencap’s existed, society “should feel ashamed” to have so little acceptance of children who may sometimes act differently to others. “It’s heartbreaking that not only are children with a learning disability being dropped off birthday invite lists or being asked to stay in the garden away from other children, but almost a third of parents have felt forced to miss social engagements, such as their best friend’s wedding,” she says.

NEGATIVE ATTITUDES

Ramya Kumar, mother of nineyear-old Rishi, who has autism and a related learning disability, says her own experience suggests public attitudes towards children with learning disabilities are still extremely negative. “It’s particularly difficult when people don’t realise Rishi deals

and interacts with people and his surrounding world differently. When he behaves in a way other people don’t understand, I end up explaining his condition and apologising for him and I feel I shouldn’t have to.” She says she was once asked to keep Rishi in the garden instead of taking him into someone’s house because of his behaviour, and stresses: “We feel extremely isolated and outcast from society, because I feel they don’t understand or want to understand my son and his and our challenges. “That makes people act awkwardly and drift away from us.”

SUPPORT

Trudgeon points out, however, that changing these attitudes can be both easy and life-changing for parents like Ramya. “If the public can think and not judge when they see a child behaving differently, and instead offer support and acceptance, this suffering could end overnight. Parents who dedicate their life to the love of their children shouldn’t have to feel the constant need to apologise if they’re different.” She suggests people worried about how to react around children with a learning disability should pause and realise it’s OK to feel awkward, but they should still try to engage with the child. “There’s a lot of confusion around

learning disability,” she says, “but gaining a bit more understanding could change the lives of parents who have said in such large numbers that they are in need of help.” For peer-to-peer support for parents of children with a learning disability, visit www. mencap.org.uk/familyhub

ASK THE EXPERT

Q: “How much difference is the amount of time I spend with my five-year-old son likely to have on him? Is it more important for me to just have fun with him, or should I be concentrating on things like reading and writing with him?” A: Professor Marco Francesconi co-authored a recent study by the University of Essex and University College London which looked at the relationship between the time mothers spend with their children and the skills those children go on to develop. He says: “The time spent by mothers with their young children is likely to be crucial for their development. “For instance, the more time spent by mothers in educational activities, the more likely are her children to gain higher cognitive skills. Such educational activities include reading to children and helping them with their homework, while the cognitive skills are related to verbal and maths tests when children are in preschool or primary school.

GROW YOUR OWN FAMILY DINNER Ever thought about getting your own vegetable patch started? Now’s the perfect time to get planning in order to reap the rewards come spring and put together your own organic, home-grown meals

Make sure you dig it over each winter, inverting lumps of soil to bury the annual weeds but leave the clods intact. Frost and rain will break them down leaving behind a crumby soil by spring time. If you have light, sandy soil wait until spring before digging, and you might need to lime regularly to keep them at a neutral pH (if in doubt, get a soil tester to check the pH of your soil).

ROTATION PLANS

A good technique that's easy to plan is the four year rotation. All you have to do it divide your

An example might be the below. If you haven't got enough space for four, a conventional crop rotation won't be practical, so just aim to not grow the same crop on the same patch of ground any more than you need to. Separate the main crop groups as much as possible. Grow potatoes, onions and cabbage families on a different area each year and fit the other crops around them. Finally keep track of what you're growing each year and you won't go far wrong.

YEAR 1 YEAR 2 YEAR 3 YEAR 4 PLOT A

SPRUCING UP AN EXISTING PLOT?

plot into four separate sections if you’ve got enough space and then operate a four year rotation on each part.

PLOT B

STARTING A NEW PLOT?

If you're starting from scratch or creating yourself some raised vegetable beds then you need to make sure you prepare the ground thoroughly by digging and breaking up the compacted soil and weeding thoroughly. Then add your bulky organic matter before the planting season starts – spring is best and use compost as surface mulch.

WHAT GOES TOGETHER?

Legumes (so peas and beans) go together well – French, broad and runner beans. Keep the onion family together – Garlic, leeks, onions, shallots and spring onions. Roots and tubers – including carrots, parsnips, beetroot, potatoes and tomatoes. The brassicas (otherwise known as the cabbage family) – brussels sprouts, cabbages, Chinese greens, pak choi, radish, cauliflowers, swedes and turnips.

PLOT C

If you've been eyeing up a patch of your garden to grow your own vegetables, or looking into renting an allotment, here's some advice from Hannah Stephenson about what to grow, where and when to plant them and the importance of crop rotation. Firstly, creating yourself a vegetable patch can be very rewarding but you have to be mindful of what you are planting as there's certain rules you should abide by. • Growing compatible crops together is likely to reap much richer harvests, along with being careful not to tread soil from one bed to another and keeping your tools clean between use will help to keep the soil healthy, and reduce the spreading of pests and diseases. • Crop rotation – what's it all about? Well, avoid planting the same crop in the same bit of ground more than one year in four to stop root diseases building up and will make the most of the natural resources you've got. • Green vegetables need more watering so can be separated away from the less thirsty, root

crops. Lettuces are often grown with the cabbage family as they need organic matter, nitrogen fertiliser and regular watering. If you're growing perennial vegetables like rhubarb and asparagus, best to keep them out of the crop rotation beds. • If you'e growing salad leaves and lettuce, just squeeze those in where ever they will fit. They're quick growing and a good catch crop between the slower growing crops such as winter brassicas. • Swap the main groups of vegetables around in a regular order then you can best use of the nutrients that you have in the soil as different crops need different amounts of nutrients.

PLOT D

IT can be difficult to feed a growing family, especially with nutrient rich, healthy meals every day. But with careful planning and a little bit of patience you could pick your own ingredients from your back garden and not only create a delicious meal, but also save yourself a penny or two.

MAKE SURE YOUR LITTLE ONES ARE SURFING SAFELY With more and more children using gadgets connected up to the internet, we’ve got some expert tips for you to make sure they stay safe online TODAY the kids are extremely tech-savvy – more so than us in some cases – and so you'll likely find a gadget on the top of their birthday list this year. Whilst these gadgets have lots of benefits, and keep kids entertained for hours on end it's worth noting some of the risks that parents need to be on the lookout for. A recent Ofcom report found that children's internet use has reached an all time high with 5 – 15 year olds spending around 15 hours online and 3 - 4 year olds spending more than eight.

SURF THE NET SAFELY

Put simply, more time online means more risk to children's online safety. Julia Fossi, head of online safety at the NSPCC said: “many children receive internetenabled devices, including tablets, games consoles and smartphones as gifts, so it's important parents are proactive about taking steps to keep them safe online.”

10

However, with a resource as vast and complex as the internet, where do you start?

PARENTAL CONTROLS

A good starting point is the good old-fashioned parental controls. They can be set up to block upsetting or harmful content, along with control in-app purchases to avoid a hefty bill, and keep track of how long each child is spending online. You don't have to be a technical expert and they're usually free, and easy to set up. If you have any questions about where to start with this, give the NSPCC a call on 0808 800 5002 for advice.

CAREFUL SHARING

It sounds like an obvious one but talk to your child about what they're up to online, and let them know what to do when browsing. When talking to them about online safety, it's important to stress the need to keep personal information safe, warn Douglas and Estelle Lloyd, co-founders of Azoomee, a digital entertainment app for children to watch, play and learn safely online.

"Kids love to take photos and share them with their friends, and while we know as adults how to adjust privacy settings and monitor what we share online, children don't always understand the consequences," says Douglas. "To tackle this problem, explain to your child how quickly content can be shared across the web and how sometimes it can be accessed by individuals other than the intended recipients. "The key message should be that you should be very careful about what you share online."

CYBERBULLYING

Estelle warns that tackling cyberbullying is complicated because it can potentially be seen and shared by everyone. "A useful way of tackling this is to explain to children the power of the written word and that it's harder to take it back, particularly if you can't delete it," she says. "By teaching children to think very carefully about what they write, they'll be more likely to report online bullying."

What's real and what's not? Unfortunately some of the information online is at best, uncorroborated and, at worst, complete fiction. It's important people make sure that children understand that just because somethings on the internet, it doesn't mean that it's true. "Broaching this subject with a child isn't easy," says Douglas, "but I find the best way is to encourage them to question where the information or an image has come from and the likelihood that it's real."

ONLINE CHATTING

Social media is a tricky one, Estelle advises parents to look for a platform where children have a sense of independence, but which also have an element of control through tools such as approved invites, co-viewing rights or parental locks. "Taking small steps with this will help children learn how to navigate chatrooms safely and understand how online communications should reflect friendships offline," she says.

Keep your kids on top form this year MAKING SURE YOU AND YOUR FAMILY STAY HAPPY AND HEALTHY THROUGHOUT THE YEAR CAN BE ACHIEVED BY FOLLOWING SOME QUICK AND SIMPLE MOTTOS WE all know it can be difficult to balance everything you've got going on in life, but making sure your family is fighting fit will help everything run smoothly. FUEL UP RIGHT

So we all know we should be eating five fruit and vegetables a day right? But who can honestly say that they do? Very few of us. But making sure your family gets all the fuel they need doesn't have to be the mammoth task it seems. Start with simply swaps, instead of cordial, try real fruit juice or smoothies, instead of having a cookie jar have a fruit bowl, and instead of crisps have some carrot sticks on hand or make your own vegetable crisps.

HEALTHY, BALANCED DIET

If you're struggling to get your children to eat healthy foods, then why not invite them to help out with the cooking? Getting them involved in the process will

no doubt mean they'll be more interested with eating it. It's also a good activity to do with your kids, helping you out with your household jobs and having fun in the process. When you're prepping the family meals for the week, make sure they're as balanced as they can be. As a rough guide they should include the five main food groups; whole grains, fruit and vegetables, protein, dairy and fat. Example meals could include a starchy base, like potatoes or rice, have some dairy or beans/pulses, and then protein from meats or eggs.

GET OUT AND ABOUT

The key to keeping fit is keeping active, so grab your family and get out in the fresh air! Take your family on a weekend walk which both acts as daily exercise and as quality time for the family together, making memories as you go. Get your children signed up to a class, could be anything from dancing to swimming – they're all fun activities that are not only

great exercise but social too.

HYDRATE, HYDRATE, HYDRATE

Water is the one thing we simply can't live without. When you're out and about all day running errands or standing in for the football coach it's important to remember to drink enough water. Do this by investing in a good quality litre water bottle, and keep it on hand to sip throughout the day, that way you will barely even realise that you're drinking. If your kids aren't keen on plain H20 then there's lots of ways to spruce it up, like freezing fruit into ice cubes and adding them or change the carton to a refillable water bottle to encourage them to drink more rather than just the amount in the carton.

HEALTHY MIND, HAPPY MIND

Finally, it's important that your home is a nice place for your child to come back to, a welcoming space where they can relax, have fun and grow.

Fitness fun down at the golf club ELSHAM GOLF CLUB SEES BIG CHANGES ON THE HORIZON - KEEPING IT FUN BUT INCREASING FOCUS ON FITNESS AND WELLBEING OF GOLFERS ELSHAM Golf Club, a modern community venue and thriving golf club, is changing the way it operates by making major investments and creating initiatives to attract more people to the game and the club. John Burnham, Elsham’s new manager, talks through the changes so far and what’s to come... “I am new into the position, our professional golfer joined us a few months ago and we’ve appointed a new chef as well. “We are trying to change the way a traditional golf club works. “With the introduction of our professional David McNicholas, fresh ideas and major investment in new green keeping equipment. “We are buying the most up to date full range from John Deere which is coming on-stream in the next two months and more importantly improving the offering that we give to new

12

members. “We’ve recognised that the increasing cost of living can make membership harder to access for the 18 – 45 age group, so we’ve created an affordable pricing structure that allows younger people to play our great game. We are also giving free memberships to under 11s. “Our senior and ladies sections are flourishing and we always welcome new members” Off the course itself, the clubhouse with its panoramic view, easy one level access and ample parking offers Sunday lunches and caters for functions such as large formal dinners, weddings and family gatherings or just a simple sandwich. Mr Burnham said: “We see ourselves not just as a golf club but as a venue and catering is a big part of our business. “We have got really good catering facilities for all kinds of occasions.”

FITNESS AND WELLBEING

Mr Burnham went on to

emphasise the importance of golf in terms of fitness and wellbeing. “It is not just about exercise, it is also about mental wellbeing.” “Our seniors group aren’t just playing golf, after their game they meet in the Clubhouse for a chat and bite to eat. “We supply a good social scene for playing members and house members with monthly quizzes, dinner dances and events throughout the year. Finally he said: “changes have been made in the proshop and on the coaching side of things. Previously we had a very traditional coaching facility but that has been modified with the introduction of the video and SkyTrak launch monitor device. The new indoor Coaching Academy means that you don’t even have to go outside to practice or learn” “The new Head Professional David is also qualified in Sports Psychology after completing his PGA Foundation Degree”

Mr McNicholas, who was previously Head Professional at Normanby Hall Golf Club commented on the overhaul of the facilities at Elsham. “One of our major objectives initially was to use the downstairs space to the Pro Shop more effectively. The coaching room was under used and not a positive environment for learning. I redesigned the area, establishing my office whilst creating a reception area for guests and members. The coaching area allows the Professional team at Elsham to use the SkyTrak technology to its full potential. We can coach, custom fit and offer Gapping sessions whilst providing an excellent on the day service to society and corporate groups with skill tests. The new Pro Shop reflects the ambition Elsham Golf Club has moving forward” For more information playing at Elsham or joining the club, call 01652 680291 or see www. elshamgolfclub.co.uk

Time for a better you DO you want to take the first step into leading a healthier lifestyle? If so, Lincs Inspire’s Active Forever programme can help you make small but effective changes to improve your wellbeing. The Active Forever scheme is new for 2017 and is designed for over 55s or anyone with an ongoing health condition, regardless of their age, who would benefit from both physical and mental activity. The 12 week programme is packed with health and wellbeing activities individually designed to support a wide range of health conditions. Sue Wells, Lincs Inspire Chief Executive Officer, said: “We’re very excited to be launching our new wellness scheme, Active Forever. We want 2017 to be a year for getting active, not just thinking about it! “We are proud to be working with our local health colleagues who specialise in a wide range of conditions, their knowledge and advice has helped to develop

16

this programme and we are very grateful too for the training they have delivered to our staff which is so important for both user and staff confidence.” Wellbeing activities are available across Lincs Inspire venues including Cleethorpes Leisure Centre, Grimsby Leisure Centre, King George V Stadium, Immingham Swimming Pool, Bradley Football Development Centre, as well as Lincs Inspire Libraries, so you can find the activities and venues that are right for you. You can also make the most of Grimsby Leisure Centre’s specialist Toning Suite which offers a relaxing and gentle form of exercise, ideal for rehabilitation, those not used to exercise, or those living with a long term illness or medical condition. The Toning Suite is home to 14 specially designed toning stations, all of which are adjusted to individual needs and totally relaxing. Pam Taylor, aged 69, is a regular

user of the Toning Suite, she said: “I was referred by my GP to undertake regular exercise with Lincs Inspire about two years ago. I used the gyms and attended exercise classes and at the time the benefits of regular, gentle exercise were huge for me because I suffered from arthritis. It helped me lose some weight which in turn reduced the pain I was in and made me more mobile. It made me think about what I could do, rather than what I couldn’t. “Since then I underwent a knee replacement which left me not as fit as I would like to have been. So I’ve been using the Toning Suite at Grimsby Leisure Centre for about six months. It’s a great way to get into exercise. I didn’t think it would make a difference but it has altered my shape and I certainly feel better. The staff are so good with everybody, kind and caring, and encourage everyone in a positive way. It’s great fun! “I would encourage anyone to

take advantage of the facilities here and to talk to their GP about the benefits of regular exercise.” Lincs Inspire has a team of trained wellbeing staff and fitness instructors on hand to guide you on your Active Forever journey! So whether you want to work out in the gym, make a splash in one of Lincs Inspire’s swimming pools, join in a group exercise class, or get creative with Lincs Inspire’s Arts Development team, the Active Forever programme offers something for both body and mind. If you would like to join the Active Forever programme please speak to a member of Lincs Inspire’s wellbeing team about self-referral, or speak to a health professional, i.e. your GP, practice nurse, health trainer or physiotherapist, to see if you can be referred onto the programme. For more information on the Active Forever programme please call (01472) 324385 or email activeforever@ lincsinspire.com.

Put your spare room to good use SUPPORTED LODGINGS WORK TO SUPPORT YOUNG PEOPLE WITH A PLACE TO LIVE WHILST THEY WORK ON BECOMING INDEPENDENT, HERE’S YOUR CHANCE TO HELP IN our area there are lots of young people aged 16 or over who, for a variety of reasons, cannot live with their immediate families and yet are not ready to live independent lives. Supported Lodgings provide the people and places to help these teenagers and young adults move towards independence. These lodgings – in ordinary people’s homes – create a stable environment where young people can develop their life skills and their confidence to cope with everyday life.

“I know I’m not a child anymore, but I don’t feel grown up enough to live on my own..” Jamie, aged 17 Most of these skills are the kind of things that we as adults take for granted. For all sorts of reasons, some young people have missed out and need guidance to acquire these life skills, and then need the confidence to use them. There is a severe shortage of supported lodgings in our area, and yet we know from experience that for vulnerable young people the scheme is the ideal bridge between being cared for and taking care of themselves. If you have an interest in young people, and a room in your house, then with our help, training and ongoing support, you could probably be the key person and the key place in someone’s life. Providers of supported lodgings can be one person or more, a couple, or a family. You can be working or unemployed, married or unmarried. You may be foster carers who want to extend your care for a young person already living with you, but who has reached the age of 18 or more.

18

This is known as a “staying put’ arrangement. Supported Lodging can be for a period until you, the young person and the Supported Lodgings team agree it’s time to try independent living. It can be long term if it is felt that the young person needs continued support, or it can be very brief. Answer these questions and see if you have the potential to be a Supported Lodgings provider. • Do I have a spare room in my home? • Do I have a supportive partner/family? • Do I like having young people around? • Can I relate to young people and their lives? • Am I flexible and prepared to adapt to different people and circumstances? • Do I listen and try to see other people’s points of view? • Am I a person who is willing to talk through problems? • Can I communicate effectively with people from different backgrounds to my own? • Am I willing to take advice from others? • Am I happy to pass on skills and experience in a friendly way? • Can I be fair and firm when I need to be? • Am I prepared to ask for help when I need it? If you’ve answered yes to several of these questions, then you have some of the requirements you’ll need as a Supported Lodgings Provider. As long as you have the spare room, with training and support you can develop all these qualities and more besides! ADVERTISING FEATURE

Getting your Mojo back A SCUNTHORPE Chiropractor is continuing its commitment to changing the lives of its patients. The Chirohealth Clinic, which operates on Old Brumby Street, is a team of chiropractors, massage therapists, a nutritional therapist and support staff determined to provide their patients with an excellent service. The clinic has been successfully doing this since 2004 when it was opened by Julia Pullin, a doctor of chiropractic. After training in Bournemouth for five years, she cared for patients at clinics in Brigg and Grimsby before realising her vision to open her own clinic in Scunthorpe with the help of her husband Spencer. Patients have sought the services of Chirohealth after hearing of the help they have given to others with back and neck pain as well as headaches. They are regularly recommended by friends and family members that currently attend the clinic, who have had wonderful results after treatment. Chiropractic care is primarily centred around the function of the spine and how it interacts with the spinal cord and nerves. The bones of the spine are called vertebra and

20

are arranged one on top of the other with shock absorbing discs between them. The spinal cord runs through a hole in each of these vertebrae and is therefore protected by them, whilst still being flexible. The nerves that leave your spinal cord, to connect your brain with all the different areas of your body, exit through gaps at each side formed by the position of the disc. The vertebrae and discs should glide smoothly over one another like a well-oiled machine. Any problem with this motion is what a chiropractor is looking for as it can cause inflammation and tight muscles which could put pressure on the nerves. Conditions of the spine can cause severe back pain, but also other symptoms such as headaches, pins and needles and numbness. The symptoms can build up over many years and have a great impact on the sufferer’s quality of life. Chirohealth focusses on

addressing the cause of these symptoms and also enabling patients to improve their health in other areas by making small and gradual changes to their lifestyle, including nutrition, activity levels, posture and stress. Chirohealth gives patients the tools to get their mojo back by giving a helping hand in these areas. They operate from a stunning modern purpose built building. The building includes six bright and airy treatment rooms, an examination room, a media

area, a coffee lounge and a huge reception area. There is also an abundance of free parking, making the service for patients even more convenient. In conjunction with the skills of a highly trained team, these services are designed to aid the comfort and relaxation of all visitors. To hear how they have helped other people, go to their website www.chirohealth.co.uk and click on the patient stories link, or simply call in to find out more.

Picking the right dentist for you HELPING YOU TO CHOOSE A DENTIST THAT YOU TRUST AND FEEL COMFORTABLE WITH IF you haven’t already got a regular dentist, finding the right one for you can be quite a daunting task, where do you start?

Many people have, at best, a mild anxiety and at worst, a fear of the dentist, so making sure you find one that you’re comfortable and relaxed with is important. So, you haven’t got a dentist and haven’t been for a while, you know you need to go for a check up, not specifically because anything’s wrong but just as you know you should be going for regular check-ups to make sure your dental health stays in tip-top shape.

Modern dentists will identify the cause of any dental problems rather than just ‘fix the hole’. Problems in your oral hygiene can increase your chances of problems down the line such as heart disease and diabetes so it’s important to keep on top of it.

around. The basic costs of dental work doesn’t vary too much and many dentists offer payment plans to help you spread the cost and

makes sure you keep on top of your regular check-ups and cleanings – so they’re a win all round.

RECOMMENDATIONS GO A LONG WAY If you’re moving town, consider asking your current dentist whether he knows anyone in the area you are moving to, this will give you a good starting point. Then ask your colleagues, friends and family who their dentists are and see if they would recommend them.

OVERALL HEALTH

CONSIDER THE COSTS

You dentist should be interested in your overall health, not just your oral health. They should be asking you about your general heath history and letting you know ways in which your oral health can impact this.

Unfortunately in the dental industry the old age ‘you get what you pay for’ runs true. Finding a cheaper, low quality dentist may cost you more in the long run, so its best to get a good one and pay the price first time

Who will you choose to speak on your behalf? GETTING YOUR LEGAL AFFAIRS IN ORDER IS IMPORTANT TO MAKE SURE SOMEONE YOU TRUST TO MAKE THE DECISIONS ON YOUR BEHALF HAS THE POWER TO DO SO SO WHAT IS POWER OF ATTORNEY EXACTLY?

Lasting power of attorney is a legal way of giving someone you trust the legal authority to make decisions on your behalf if, for any reason, you lack the mental capacity at some point in the future or you don’t want to make decisions for yourself any more. There are two types, one for financial decisions and another for health and care decisions. If you give someone financial lasting power of attorney

24

then they can generally make decisions for you regarding matters about buying and selling property, paying bills including mortgages, investing money and making repairs or alterations to your property. Lasting power of attorney for health and care decisions can only be used if you lose mental capacity, in which case the attorney can make decisions for you about where you should live, what you should be eating, medical care, you social life including who you contact.

SO WHO COULD IT BE?

First off, they must be at over 18 years old, so it could be a husband, wife or partner, a relative, such as son or sister, a close friend who you trust, or it could also be a professional such as a solicitor or family doctor. Before you choose someone, make sure that they have the mental capacity themselves to make these decisions for you. Ask yourself the following questions: Do you trust them? This is the most important as you have to know that they will act in your

best interests when you can’t act yourself. Can they look after their own affairs? They may need to juggle their own responsibilities as well as yours so you need to make sure they are capable and willing to do so. Are you happy for them to act on your behalf? Once it comes into effect you have to realise that they will be making important decisions in your life, if for any reason you think that they might make the wrong decision for you then reconsider who you appoint.

CHOOSE WELL AND STAY WELL A&E isn’t always the best place to go. You may get more appropriate and faster treatment elsewhere... IF you or a member of your family becomes ill or injured, choosing the right NHS service can help you get on the road to recovery in no time. Knowing where to turn when you have an urgent health need can sometimes be tricky, though, and that’s why in North East Lincolnshire, we’ve introduced our Single Point of Access (SPA) on 01472 256 256 - one number you can call day or night for advice you can trust and access to urgent medical services. If you live in North Lincolnshire or Lincolnshire you can call NHS 111 for 24/7 help. So, what are our options? SELF CARE Sometimes the best person to take care of you is yourself or a family member. You should be prepared for some of the most common ailments by keeping a well-stocked medicine cabinet and first-aid kit at home. A local pharmacist can give you

26

advice on what to have in. Essentials include:

PAIN RELIEF • Painkillers such as aspirin, paracetamol and ibuprofen are effective at relieving most minor aches and pains. • Antihistamines - These are useful for allergies and insect bites. They are also helpful if you have hay fever. • Fluid replacement drinks Fever, diarrhoea and vomiting make us lose the water and minerals we need and can lead to dehydration. Fluid replacement drinks can help restore your body’s natural balance of minerals and fluid. • Indigestion treatment - If you have stomach ache, heartburn or trapped wind. • First aid - A well-prepared first aid kit can help treat minor cuts, sprains and bruises.

PHARMACIST Pharmacists can advise on common illnesses such as coughs, colds, aches and pains

and the medicines you need to treat them. They can also help you decide whether you need to see a doctor. You can talk to your pharmacist in confidence and you don’t need an appointment. Most pharmacies now have a quiet consultation area where patients can discuss health problems in privacy. Services from your local pharmacy include: • Emergency contraception • Chlamydia screening and treatment • Pregnancy testing • Medicines Reviews • Stop smoking services • Weight management • Truss fittings • Incontinence supplies • Needle exchange and supervised drug administration • They can help with minor ailments such as: • Bugs and viruses • Minor injuries

• Tummy troubles • Women’s health (for example menopause or menstruation) • Skin conditions • Allergies • Aches and pains • Children’s minor illnesses and mishaps

YOUR GP If your pharmacist is unable to deal with your condition or it doesn’t get better after a few days, your GP can help. They provide a range of services by appointment, including medical advice, examinations and prescriptions. If you are not registered with a GP, call the local health advice line on 01472 256256 or visit www.nhs. uk to find one near you. A GP Out of Hours service is available from 6.30pm to 8.00am on weekdays and all day at weekends and on bank holidays. If you think you need a GP appointment out of hours, please ring Single Point of Access on 01472 256256.

SINGLE POINT OF ACCESS (SPA) If it’s not a 999 emergency but you need medical help fast, call the North East Lincolnshire Single Point of Access (SPA) on 01472 256 256. SPA is for people who live in North East Lincolnshire or are registered with a North East Lincolnshire GP. SPA offers confidential advice and information over the phone 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. If you are ill and have any questions about your physical or mental health or if you need to see a GP during the evening, night time or weekends then ring 01472 256 256. You will get through to a team of trained call advisers, who are supported by experienced clinicians. They will ask some questions to assess your symptoms and give you the healthcare advice you need or direct you to the right local service. If they think you need an ambulance, they will send one immediately – just as if you had originally dialled 999. You should call 01472 256 256 if: • You need medical help fast, but it is not a 999 emergency • You think you need to go to accident and emergency or another NHS urgent care service • You do not know who to call for medical help or you do not have a GP to call

• You require health information or reassurance about what to do next • For less urgent health needs, you should still contact your GP in the usual way. SPA is also for enquiries about adult social care (if you or a relative needs some extra support at home, for example). You can also use this number in the daytime for general advice and support around your mental wellbeing and during the evening/overnight people can access the Mental Health Crisis Service by calling the same number.

A&E OR 999 Emergency services are always

busy but this is particularly true during the winter. You should only attend A&E (sometimes known as “Casualty”) if you are badly hurt, seriously ill or if you have been advised to go there by SPA (or NHS 111), your GP or a Pharmacist. A BUSY 2017 ON THE WAY FOR FOCUS

The independent, adult social work provider, focus, uses new and innovative ways to reach those who suffer with autism as the demand for their services continue to rise

THE group recently launched My Autistic World - a free smartphone app which allows those with autism to record their feelings and access vital contact information. It’s just the latest development from focus, who are commissioned by the North East Lincolnshire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), as they deal with an increase in the number of service users. Between 2015 and 2016, more than 6,000 care assessments were completed by focus, which was a five per cent increase on the previous year. And the team, who are based at Heritage House on Fisherman’s Wharf in Grimsby, are already looking forward to a busy 2017, which includes a two-day autism conference at the Beachcomber in Cleethorpes on June 7 and 8. Kirsty Sharlotte, business services officer at focus, said the event and the app were both designed to make more people aware of what services are on offer. “I think people are not always aware that it is focus they need to call if they’re in North East Lincolnshire,” she said.

28

“For example, we have a single point of access which offers advice and information. “They will help people find the different services there are in the area and refer them if they need a care assessment. They are available 24-hours-a-day.”

BEACHCOMBER The two-day conference at the Beachcomber follows on from the hugely successful conference in May last year. It was attended by more than 200 people and held at the Humber Royal Hotel in Grimsby. Expert guests included Channel 4’s Alan Gardener, Jamie Knight and Dr Niko Kargas. Kirsty said this year’s event promises to be even bigger and better as they attempt to reach

more potential service users in North East Lincolnshire. “We have learnt from the experience of last year’s conference and have decided to hold it over two days this time,” she said. “There will be bands, singers and speakers. There will also be a quiet room for people who want to get away and have some peace and quiet. “The first year we had 75 people attend and last year we had 211 people come along. “We had a lot who had travelled from out of the area and we’re hoping to double the figures this time.” Kirsty added that focus’ new app was “still in its early stages” but the social care provider had received positive feedback so far.

MY AUTISTIC WORLD The app, which is free to download from Google Play and the Apple App Store on Android and other smartphones, allows users to input emergency contact numbers, upload photographs of themselves and features a mood chart. The chart enables users to communicate more effectively. Focus’ chief executive Joe Warner previously explained to the Grimsby Telegraph: “The app is easily accessible and makes it easier for the person involved to indicate to the police, hospital, doctors, school teachers and college tutors that they have autism and may be struggling to communicate.” Charitable staff at the social work provider recently demonstrated their generosity after presenting a cheque worth £1,100 pound to The Ark animal rescue centre in North Somercotes. The money was raised through a charity social event and raffle draw. For more information on what focus has to offer, visit their website at www. focusadultsocialwork.co.uk or call 01472 256256.

There’s plenty of destinations to choose from, starting at the tip of the Scottish highlands right down to the coastal views in Devon. And you don’t have to pick just one, coach trips are a great way to visit a lot of destinations in just a short space of time.

WHERE TO SIT Somewhere between the front few rows and the centre are best, that was you don’t have to walk all the way to the back of the bus to get on and off and it’s quicker to disembark if you choose these seats. If you get travel sick, best to aim for the middle of the coach, sitting between the wheels generally means it will be less bumpy from any uneven roads.

WHAT TO PACK Packing for a coach journey is slightly different to packing for

a regular holiday, you’ll need to keep your documents with you at all times so a smaller travel bag is essential. Loose clothing is a bonus as you’ll want to be as comfortable as possible sitting on a coach for a number of hours. You don’t know whether the air con will be on or whether it will be quite hot, so easily removable layers are key. If you struggle with long journeys, a neck pillow might alleviate any tension from the motion of the coach, along with plenty of bottled water to keep you hydrated throughout the trip. Take some entertainment, an e-reader or tablet are good as you can pop a few good books on, browse the internet and play games... and only need to pack the one charger. Finally toiletries and wet wipes, simply to make sure you stay fresh and clean on your journey and will help to wake you up after any longer periods of travelling. So why not give a coach trip a thought for your next mini-break, or test out a day-trip? Think of the perks, no more tedious security checks, no more mid-flight trolley shopping sprees and never have to stop to ask for directions again. Many tour companies even have convenient pick-up points that could be just down the road from your home.

KEEPING THE LIFE YOU LOVE

Get the right support in place so you can maintain your independence for longer WHAT do you do when you want to live independently but are struggling to live self-sufficiently? Do you find yourself just needing a little bit of extra help around the house, or with certain activities? Or maybe even a carer for a part of the day to help you get ready for the day? Well you aren’t alone. There are a lot of people in the same position and thankfully there’s lots of companies, gizmos and gadgets to help you successfully live independently.

MAINTAINING INDEPENDENCE Living independently means you have complete choice and control over every aspect of your life, and it’s something that many of us want to hold on to for as long as possible, but at some point, we have to relinquish control and let people help out to make life run smoothly. Living independently means you

can choose where you live, you can still enjoy time with your friend and family and take part in all the activities you are used to, it also means you can continue to train or work like you’re used to. It means making small adjustments in your life to keep this level of independence, and getting the support you need where you need it.

SOCIAL CARE Social care allows many people to maintain their normal lives as much as possible whilst also looking after their wellbeing. Social care could be anything from helping with washing, bathing and getting dressed, to helping you out around the house, with things like cooking and cleaning. It could also branch out to wider parts of your life, such as giving you support so that you can get involved in everything you are interested in, or even to go and work or volunteer in your

community. But it’s also worth noting that social care is not health care. It is an additional support system to help you manage on your own for as long as you can. If you’d like to find out more about what social care is available to you, ask your local authority who will come and make an assessment of what care and support you may need. They will also make a judgement as to whether your case meets the specific criteria for social care support, then they will work alongside you in order to create a plan for your upcoming support. On top of social care you can also make certain modifications to your home to help yourself, things such as an electric bed to help you get up in the morning, a stair-ift, to help you get upstairs with more ease, or modified bathrooms to help you clean without causing an discomfort.

holiday? Well the short answer is yes! There are plenty of companies and even grants around to help you fund a little trip away and allow you to jet away in relative ease. If you use a wheelchair check out Accomable.com which helps to find easily accessible properties around the globe. So you’ll never be stuck for holiday inspiration again.

ON THE ROAD There are lots of ways in which you can get around more easily, including blue badge schemes, motability packages and even disabled parking spaces. So if you were thinking that you’d have to give up driving then think again. There’s different levels of support in this area as a blue badge will simply allow you to park closer to where you’re going whereas getting a disabled bay close to where you live means you’ll never have to fight over a car parking spot again.

Carelink – there for you all day every day

PROVIDING YOU WITH PEACE OF MIND WITH LIFETIME ALARM UNITS, THERE FOR YOU 24 HOURS A DAY, 365 DAYS A YEAR WHEN urgent help is needed, a call alarm system can be like ‘a fifth emergency service’ to vulnerable people. Carelink is a charity based at Centre4, in Wootton Road, Grimsby, and they install and monitor the lifeline alarm units, with trained staff available to answer calls 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The simple devices can not only potentially save lives but also give freedom to people who wish to live independently with the reassurance that they can quickly seek assistance in the event of an incident or medical emergency. The alarms, also known as telecare, connect to a telephone line which they use to connect to specialised monitoring system.

RESPONDING TO EMERGENCIES FOR 21 YEARS Explaining how the devices

work, Carelink chief officer Lynda Bringloe said: “We’re North East Lincolnshire’s only telecare control centre and have been for 21 years. “It sits there doing absolutely nothing until somebody needs it. It has a loudspeaker and microphone in it, an emergency button and a portable pendant which can be worn around the neck or wrist. “They’ve moved on a bit designwise over the years. They started off as huge telephone things with soap-on-a-rope-size pendants but the system still does the same thing – you need help, you press your button and it puts a call through to the control centre. It opens up two-way speech and we can call out a contact like a neighbour, a GP or an ambulance if needed.

ALWAYS SOMEONE THERE TO TALK TO “Or it might just be that they want reassurance – there’s always somebody here to talk to.”

Alongside fall detectors and medication dispensers, the call alarm system is just one of a number of pieces of technology now available to help people living with illnesses, disabilities or in isolation to be independent. Carelink currently has around 3,000 clients in North East Lincolnshire. Many pay a small subscription fee for the system though some may be eligible to have the alarm free of charge. Lynda added: “Some of those are very high need while some we never hear from one month to the other. “What they’re getting out of it is the reassurance that it’s there. They’re not sat in their house thinking ‘what if?’ “We’re the man in the middle for the client at one end and the service they need at the other – we’re the fifth emergency service! “But it’s not all about emergencies, because something

that’s an emergency to one person won’t be to another.” For more information about the Carelink service or would like a demonstration, call 01472 312312, e-mail admin@ care-link.org.uk or visit www. care-link.org.uk

KEEP YOUR HEALTH ON YOUR MIND To make sure we all live long and healthy lives, it's important that we keep on top of our health and wellness now HERE’S a few wellnessenhancing steps to keep you embracing life, to make sure that in years to come we’e still living happily, healthily and well. TALK ABOUT YOUR WORRIES

We will all face challenges and low periods (no matter how glittering things look on social media). Rates of anxiety and depression have risen, some 70 million work days a year are lost due to mental illness (including stress) according to the Mental Health Foundation, and suicide remains the biggest cause of death in men aged under 49 - in fact, men account for threequarters of all suicide deaths, yet they’re still less likely to talk about their mental health or seek support than women. Whether it’s a chat with a friend, your GP, opening up to a stranger on a helpline, or finding solace with people going through similar experiences on an internet forum

- find the space that works for you and offload.

DITCH DIETS

We all know diets can be a vicious cycle, setting you up for mood swings and often greater weight gain - and just recently, a US study found women who yo-yo dieted had a higher risk of sudden cardiac death and coronary heart diseases. Obviously, it’s not a good idea to dismiss healthy eating and pay no attention to your weight, but it doesn’t have to be complicated and punishing. Pay attention to guidelines (they are based on research!), eat like you care, enjoy the good stuff in moderation, and relax. “You can guarantee that as soon as you ban a certain food, you will get cravings for it!” says Shona Wilkinson, nutritionist at SuperfoodUK.com. “It’s worth bearing in mind that most foods have some health benefits (except the processed, sugary types). You can therefore still have most foods, but save some for occasional treats. For

ALL YOU CAN EAT ORIENTAL BUFFET Open daily for food from 12pm

MOVE YOUR BODY

If you haven’t already, make 2017 the year you fall in love with moving your body. It’s a solidly established fact that people who are regularly physically active have a significantly lower risk of major diseases like type 2 diabetes, many cancers and heart disease - and there’s a wealth of evidence that exercise supports mental health too. Aside from that, it feels good to feel fit. You’re more awake, motivated, life’s more fun and manageable and you and your body are working together. Find the ‘thing’ that feels like a joy, rather than a chore - whether it’s country walks, dancing, skipping in the garden or ultra-marathons - and just do it. Do it for you, make it a habit and keep at it.

CURATE YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA

Does browsing Facebook leave you on a bit of a downer? Battling FOMO attacks, questioning why everyone else’s life looks better than yours? Or maybe it brings out a mean streak and you succumb to tutting and judging others’ over-sharing or bragging. Newsflash: You’re in the driving seat here. Nobody’s forcing you to look at Facebook or Instagram, or feel bad afterwards. If it’s impacting your self-esteem and moods, do something about it - ‘un-follow’, ‘hide’, or just have a break entirely, even if it’s just for a week. Social media should enhance your life, not zap the joy out of it - but that’s only going to happen if you take control of how you’re using and engaging with it.

example, it isn’t beneficial for health to eat red meat every day, but certainly the occasional steak with vegetables is great. By limiting your intake of a particular thing, rather than cutting it out, you can save yourself the torment of cravings. Eat sensibly, practice ‘mindful’ eating and you can’t go wrong.”

DON’T PUT OFF SEEING YOUR DOCTOR

Hassle, waiting time, embarrassed

about making a fuss or fearing the worst - there are tons of reasons we put off seeing the doctor (and statistics back up the cliche that men are worst for this). And of course, certain things don’t warrant a trip to the GP (you’ll just be wasting your time and spreading germs), but most of the time, if it’s worrying you, if you’re in pain, find any unusual lumps or bumps, and especially if symptoms are worse or still there after a week, just make an appointment. Dr Martin Saweirs (www. drmartingp.com), is well aware that some people have a habit of not going to the doctor. “The trouble is, what happens is they either don’t go for one or two little things, which then become bigger things and more difficult to deal with. Or they come along with their one little thing and they’re really embarrassed - but generally, anybody who comes to the doctor with anything they’re embarrassed about has such self-awareness that I can assure them there’s always someone with something far more embarrassing,” he stresses. A chat with the doc will help prevent you from falling down the Dr Google rabbit-hole of dread too - whatever the symptoms, “one of the things that always comes up is cancer”, notes Saweirs. Although, if you do have something that could be cancer, getting it properly checked ASAP is always a good idea.

MAKE ‘ME TIME’ A RULE Stress is the ‘modern plague’, and don’t we know it. Yes, we’re more privileged than ever before, but sensory overload, long working hours and always being ‘connected’ (thanks smartphones) is leaving us frazzled and on the brink of burn-out. So banish the guilt, and accept that ‘me time’, ‘down time’ - whatever you want to call it - is a necessity. Read books, do crosswords, potter around the house with your phone switched off...

Save now for a comfortable future GETTING TO GRIPS WITH YOUR SAVINGS NOW WILL MEAN YOUR RETIREMENT WILL BE A SMOOTH AND STRESS-FREE MOVE WHERE and how you live in your retirement will very much depend on what you have done in past years to ensure a comfortable life. For some, there may not be a choice, but for others it will have been a case of burying their heads in the sand like an ostrich when it comes to retirement saving. Vicky Shaw looks at what you can do now to help… The new year means a fresh start - and one resolution some may want to make is to get to grips with their pension saving. It seems many of us are sticking our heads in the sand when it comes to thinking about how we’ll fund our old age. A survey suggests that nearly half (48%) of UK adults who haven’t yet retired are behaving like ‘ostriches’ when it comes to preparing for their later years.

Those with an “ostrich mentality” are either not saving for their retirement or have savings which they believe will fall short of what they will need. While some people can’t afford to save, others said they choose not to. The research, carried out among more than 6,000 people for Skipton Building Society, grouped people into different types of creatures, depending on their saving habits. Just one in 16 (6%) people in the research were classed as ‘wise owls’. This group are on track to meet or exceed their savings target, they seek professional advice and tend

to have a broad range of savings and investments. Set savings targets. Break down the sizeable goal of building a retirement fund into smaller, monthly or annual savings targets. You could put a certain percentage of your income towards living expenses and essentials, a certain percentage towards financial goals and savings and another percentage towards more flexible spending and non-essentials. • Start now. Small changes to spending habits could make your targets a reality. One way to start this is to review the outgoings listed on your bank statement, or keeping a spending

diary. An audit of your personal finances will reveal many of the non-essential expenses eating into your savings. Some of the most common expenses people say they would definitely sacrifice in retirement include TV packages or gym memberships. •

Consider seeking independent financial advice. Nearly a quarter (24%) of ‘wise owls’ seek advice from independent advisors, and this group is most likely to believe they can reach their savings targets.

Learn from others. Get in touch with retired family members and find out what financial products they use, the sacrifices they’ve had to make since retiring, and how they went about their planning.

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION... From retirement villages to care homes, choosing the right location and facility is key to your retirement happiness THERE’S a lot of information out there and even more options when it comes to picking the right place for you to spend your retirement. Whether you choose to stay independent, live in a retirement village or go into a care home, knowing what choices are open to you will allow you to make an informed decision. RETIREMENT VILLAGE Retirement villages no longer have the dreary image they used to, they have been revamped and redesigned and now offer residents state-of-the-art complexes filled with everything you could wish for. Many have multiple selfcontained apartments which make sure that you can maintain your independence as much as you would like. They also have lots of activities for you to take part in on site, from swimming to yoga, to shops and restaurants, you won’t have to travel far to keep up an active social life. However, what’s great about these villages is that whilst you get to live the kind of life you’re used to, you have the care that you may need on hand. The only negative here is that many mortgage providers won’t

give loans to people to buy retirement properties which means you would need to sell your home, become a cash buyer again, and then invest into this new property. However if you are moving into your new apartment long term this shouldn’t be too much of a problem. If you are considering a retirement village you need to be realistic about how much care you need on a daily basis as many complexes are very independent and you will need to specify what care you want when you move in.

LOCATION Have a think about who lives close by, you need to be within an easy reach of your friends and family to make sure you stay social. Lorraine Kennedy from Care Matters comments: “Those who remain in the traditional family home are usually those who end up being isolated and needing to go into care.” There are some restrictions when it comes to buying a retirement home, for example, for most you must be over 55 years old. Most are sold on a leasehold basis, meaning you’d have to pay a small amount of ground rent to the freeholder (usually the development company or owner or the property). You also need to think about

finance once you live there as they comes with a few more costs than living at home. Make sure you are familiar with all these costs before you move in to prevent any nasty surprises. There is generally a maintenance charge for the apartment, which is put towards the upkeep of the building, buildings insurance and communal area such as lifts, corridors and external grounds. On the upside you won’t need to worry about weeding any longer, and you can just look after a nice hanging basket on your balcony. You will be in charge of your own apartment though, so yes you’ll still have to get the duster out from time to time.

STAYING AT HOME If you choose to stay in the family home it might be worth having

a quick scan of your space to make sure that it is (or can be) adaptable for easy access in, out and around. Again, make sure you have a good social circle around you so that you don’t isolate yourself. Perhaps it is all on one level or relatively flat, or is there a ground floor room that could be transformed into a bedroom if need be? It’s important to consider all possibilities do you don’t end up in a tricky situation. Is the house near to all the local amenities that you need, can you walk to the corner shop and the doctors? Is there a bus stop close by for easy access to friends houses or into the town centre? Finally, are there other people around your age living in the area. Make sure you have a good social scene to keep your days busy and yourself entertained.

Choose a smart lifestyle option Generations are getting younger as we enjoy longer, healthier lives. 60s are the new 50s, 50s are the new 40s, and so on. It’s no surprise that people moving into retirement or semi-retirement are looking to continue living busy and active lives with their new found time and freedom PEOPLE reaching retirement or semiretirement want to do all of those things that they didn’t have the time to do when in full-time employment. From extended traveling adventures, starting new hobbies or perhaps simply visiting friends and family more often. To finance this, many people over 55 are looking at their property value to release some equity. Research has shown that more than 2.3m of over 55s in the UK, are planning to do this. In many cases over 55s are still living in a substantial family home where they raised their children, but, subsequently, that property has become a time consuming and costly asset to maintain. There is a lifestyle choice available to the over 55’s that enables them to downsize and release equity, without compromising on high standards of living. Luxury park home properties, which have high quality specifications, offer energy efficient and low maintenance costs that are

40

attractive to discerning home buyers of this generation.

ALISTAIR AND ROSEMARY One couple who jumped at this opportunity are retired children’s nursery owners, Alistair and Rosemary Lee. The couple were looking to downsize from their family home and to release some equity, with the plan of moving into a bungalow in the local area. Options were limited, and the costs were somewhat prohibitive. However, they then considered a luxury park home at Burton Waters. “I really wanted to enjoy my retirement,” says Alistair, “and maintaining our house and gardens was becoming more and more of a chore. I certainly didn’t want to spend my retirement mowing the lawns and doing DIY.” “Our children have grown up and long-flown the nest so we really didn’t need a large family home anymore. Our four bedroom

bungalow was too big for just two people and, despite being emotionally attached to it, we felt that it was, essentially, a family home, and as such, should be released back on to the market, so that others could enjoy it as much as we did.” “My wife and I also had great plans for our retirement and the equity release meant that we could realise those plans. We wanted to see more of the world and wanted a low maintenance home that promised a high degree of security. Then we could simply go on holiday without any worries, knowing that Burton Waters security would safeguard our property in our absence.” Having run their business in Saxilby for 12 years, Alistair and Rosemary wanted to remain in the Lincoln area, where Rosemary grew up, and where her mum still lives. So the Lees sold their home in Broadholme to become

the first occupiers of a home at Lakeshore, Burton Waters.

SUPERB VIEWS AND TRANQUILITY The lodges at Lakeshore offered them superb views and tranquility and surpassed other similar park home sites they had seen. Each energy efficient home has its own garden and stunning views of the lake, and residents can take advantage of the wide variety of facilities: restaurants, shops, and services, available close to the development at Burton Waters. Alistair, 67, said: “This is the perfect solution for couples who are looking to downsize but want to keep all of the comforts of home. It’s an idyllic place where our five grandchildren can visit and play in a secure environment.” Rosemary, 65, added: “The kitchen/dining area is very spacious and we have not had to compromise on the utilities we enjoyed in our bungalow.” “We are delighted with our new home and couldn’t be happier with Lakeshore . We are really looking forward to this next chapter in our lives.”

Make sure you’re selecting the right care home for you

AMANDA GRIFFITHS, MANAGER AT THE GROVE CARE HOME IN WALTHAM, TALKS US THROUGH SOME TOP TIPS ON CHOOSING THE RIGHT CARE HOME FOR YOUR NEEDS Making the move to a care home can be a big decision for some and may be a bit daunting, for others it’s a relief that they are no longer on their own and can enjoy being cared for in the company of others. Some people may have the luxury of taking several months to choose the right care home, but for others it may need to be a quick decision following a spell in hospital. Many people arrange their own care independently and others will be led by their local authority or social worker. Whatever your situation it’s always a good idea to do your own homework. A good tip is to know what category of care that you will need, when looking for a care

facility this is often overlooked. It can be assumed that all care homes offer all categories of care, however they do not. You need to know whether the person who requires care will need nursing care, residential care, dementia care, nursing dementia, or a home that caters for specific conditions or disabilities. The age group of the residents in the home may also be an important factor, as not all care homes are for the elderly. CQC and local authority reports are a good starting place to start. On the CQC website (www.cqc. org.uk) it is possible to enter your post code and search all categories of appropriate care homes within a nominated mileage range. Inspection reports are available for care homes of all categories and will give you

indication of the suitability for the person who may need care. It is a good idea to ask the manager of the home further questions about their report if you have any concerns or need clarification. THINGS TO DO AND LOOK OUT FOR: Visit the home unannounced. The staff at the care home should be happy to offer you a viewing at any time. This way you will see everyday life at any time of the day you visit. Have a list of questions ready you would like to ask. For example ask to see a copy of the menu and what activities are provided. • Do the staff seem friendly and engaging? • Do the residents you see look happy? • Why not ask a resident

about their experience living at the home? •

Is the environment suitable for the person you are helping find a care home?

Are the facilities suitable for a person having difficulties with cognition or mobility for example?

It is always a good idea take the perspective resident to visit the home before a final decision is made, which will allow you to gauge their reaction. A GOOD YEAR IN GRIMSBY

Additional investments, more upgrades and closer, supported relations at Orchard care homes the outdoors.

CAMBRIDGE PARK Cambridge Park, just outside Grimsby Town, is a two-storey modern home providing high quality residential care for those needing additional support and living with dementia. The home has 60 ensuite rooms. Residents are encouraged to personalise their own space, decorating with pictures and photographs. The brightly decorated communal areas are airy and spacious and provide a focal point for residents to spend time together, often taking part in activities and enjoying entertainment, or simply relaxing with friends and family.

IT has been a good year for residential and nursing care in Grimsby, as three Orchard Care Homes in and around the area have been given additional investment and upgrades, and supported in forging closer relationships with the local community. Providing just under 200 beds for those needing care in the area, the group offers residential beds, with additional specialist support for those living with dementia and those requiring 24-hour nursing. One of the homes is also supporting a transition period from hospital to home, enabling assisted recovery within a care home environment following a stay in hospital.

GOOD REPORTS ALL ROUND Grimsby Grange and Manor both received good reports from the Care Quality Commission, CQC, earlier in the year. The reports highlighted the positive and relaxed environments within the homes, where residents are encouraged to participate in activities and to maintain their independence. Ratings were given based on observations of the home by the unannounced CQC team and on conversations with staff, residents and their relatives. Grimsby Manor is a specialist dementia home, with dĂŠcor and fixtures tailored bespoke to stimulate memory and familiarisation

within the home. A monthly dementia cafĂŠ was set up by the home this year, as a relaxed and informal location for the families and friends of those living with dementia to meet, gather information and offer support to one another.

EATON COURT Eaton Court, within a short distance of Grimsby Town train station and close to several parks, is a modern and intimate

home, providing 24-hour nursing care and set across two floors. The home has 43 ensuite rooms, all decorated to high standards, with modern furnishings and fittings. There are good links with the local community, with whom they meet as often as possible, and a green outdoor space, which offers a peaceful and secure environment in which to enjoy

SUPPORT IN TIMES OF LOSS

Unfortunately there’s no quick fix when you are grieving but there are some things that you can do to help yourself and others through the process and out the other end WHEN you’re grieving there’s not much anyone can do or say to stop the pain, but there are some things you can try and do to help yourself through this time of bereavement and loss. There are usually our main stages of grief and working your way through them is the healing process we all must go through in order to get through to the other side unscathed. Firstly, you must accept that your loss is real, in most cases there is some amount of denial, especially in any cases that were sudden or unexpected. Secondly there is the experience of the grief and pain. Allowing yourself to feel this fully will mean

that you can move on healthily to the next part of your life, and will prevent it from building up and affecting you later on in life. Then there is the adjustment to your new life without the person that you have lost. This could be anything from getting used to a daily routine without someone who was a big part in that, or simply getting used to not having them to talk to about what you would like to, this is when talking to another close friend or family member will help you move through the grieving process. Then the final stage is moving the energy that you have been using to grieve into something new, something better and more positive, allowing you to use this time and energy in a more productive way will mean you move forward leaps and bounds.

EXPRESS YOURSELF Expressing yourself can be a big step in your healing process. If you don’t want to discuss the tragedy with those around you, it can be a huge relief to talk things over with someone truly impartial. There are many free help lines that offer fantastic support, whether you want someone to help you explore your options, clarify the way you feel, or you just want somebody to listen. It’s also worth turning to a reputable undertaker to help alleviate the strain of the tragedy - particularly one that understands that planning and logistics are absolutely the last things on your mind. Finding a funeral service that understands what you are going through can be a huge relief, as it will remind you that you don’t have to deal with anything alone.

ALLOW YOURSELF TIME You have to give yourself the space and time to be sad, and to heal. Don’t try and rush to get back to normal, listen to and deal with your emotions as they come rather than ignoring them and allowing them to build up. That said, try and keep a general daily routine - eat well, sleep well and get some exercise - this sense of normality will help you get through.

STAY HEALTHY Try your best to keep yourself as healthy as possible, keeping active and eating healthily will go a long way in your keeping your general wellbeing up.

48

On top of this, try to avoid any things that ‘numb’ the pain, such as alcohol. These could accentuate the pain and actually prevent you from healing as much as you could be.

SORT THE FINANCES If they did not leave behind a will, you’ll need to see to getting their finances straightened up - this is not something that you need to do on your own. There are many local will and probate solicitors who are experienced in delivering exactly the kind of considered and sensitive advice that you need to hear.

FUNERAL OPTIONS When it comes to the event itself, there’s a few options available to you, dependant on what kind of person they were, for example, if they were religious then it might be best to organise a funeral in a local church, but if not, a funeral tea is certainly worth considering. It’s an excellent way to pay tribute to your loved one’s memory, and the informal nature of the event will give you the space you need to breathe and let go of some of the stress and strain that you have been accumulating since your loved one passed away.

If you need any more information about coping with the loss of a loved one there are many resources available, check the NHS website for specific counselling needs or seek a bereavement counsellor or your GP for more information on your specific case.

Making the tough decisions easier FUNERALS ARE A VITAL PART OF THE GRIEVING PROCESS, IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO HELP YOUR FAMILY MAKE THE KEY DECISIONS BEFOREHAND OR IF YOU NEED SOME HELP ALONG THE WAY, HERE’S THE BASICS ON HOW TO CHOOSE A HEADSTONE IT’S not something many of us will have given much thought to yet, but at some point every one of us will have to decide where to hold the funeral, the dates and times and what headstone to choose. ESSENTIAL PART When a loved ones passes, the last thing that you want to be thinking about is the specifics of the funeral, but it’s an essential part of the grieving process. Having a pre-thought out plan can make the time much easier for your friends and family, and knowing what’s available to you can make the decisions that much easier to make when you don’t necessarily want to give much thought to it. Help to take the hard decisions away, and plan ahead , research your options and help your family and friends through the grieving process by taking some of the pressure and stress away.

CHOOSING A HEADSTONE So what’s out there in the world of headstones? This is how you will memorialise a loved one for many years, so it should reflect the persons tastes. If you’re wondering where to start, these are the main types of headstone available...

Upright

This is the most traditional design and are usually made from granite, marble or limestone. They’re fixed to the ground with a concrete base.

Flat

These are normally made out of granite or bronze, can be straight on the ground or can lie on a slant. These are available in a variety of colours, finishes, sizes and materials.

Cremation memorials

These are similar to upright headstones but will have containers either side which are usually separate from the

Limestone

Portland limestone is a kind of grey stone that will harden and discolour over time, giving it a weathered appearance. Due to the colouring this material relies on shadows to read inscriptions. This is more of a classic material used in churchyards.

FINALLY, HOW MUCH DOES ALL THIS COST? A headstone can cost you anything from £400 for a marker to £2000 for a curbed headstone so pick based on your budget. There are payment plans available for both these costs and the funeral overall if you’d like to spread the cost.

Serenity Memorials

Helping you choose a memorial that is a fitting tribute to your loved one.

Bronze

These are becoming more and more popular due to their resilience. It will get naturally darker over time but it doesn’t need much maintenance.

STUCK FOR WORDS? A persons epitaph can be a very personal thing, some people have poems, passages or phrases that they loved, so consider using some of those lines. Other than that you’ll need name, date of birth, death and family titles. Stick to the rules You must have burial permission in order to bury in a churchyard, but if you are using a memorial service they will usually organise this for you to save you the hassle. Cemeteries are usually more relaxed when it comes to rules and regulations compared to churchyards who have strict rules
