enewables may be a relatively new kid on the energy block but, for innovation and achievement, the industry is making ever-increasing waves across the UK. And, as the UK’s Energy Estuary, the Humber region has arguably more than most to celebrate, with millions of pounds of investment ploughed into a diverse array of projects, large and small. On Thursday, movers and shakers from both banks of the Humber gathered at The Deep in Hull for the Humber Renewables Awards.

Organised by Hull Daily Mail and with Siemens as the main sponsor, the awards aimed to celebrate the region’s very best “green” companies and organisations, and raise a glass to their achievements. Keynote speaker was Siemens’ head of renewables and wind energy, Clark MacFarlane, who said the Humber would be at the heart of the new industry. Siemens’ new factory in Hull will provide the blades for a new generation of giant offshore wind turbines being installed off the coast. The Mail’s deputy editor, Jamie Macaskill, told guests: “In a relatively short space of time, giant wind turbines will begin to rise in the Hornsea Project One site. “For perspective, the total Hornsea Zone site is twice the size of Greater London. “The logistics that will service these wind farms will be here on the Humber. “Much of the manufacturing will be here, the expertise, the engineers, the tradespeople, the

trainers and the apprentices will be here on the Humber. “It really will be something to witness, to be involved with and, of course, to report.” But Mr Macaskill said the Humber also had a thriving renewables sector of small and independent companies to play a key role in the future. He said: “This isn’t just about things on a giant scale. It is also about the start-ups, the companies evolving, adapting to new opportunities and challenges. “That’s where much of the real enterprise comes from here. That’s where, not just supply line, but new indigenous industry will rise. “That is reflected in these awards. These awards have never been about simple scale of investment, they have been about recognising ingenuity, opportunity and enterprise, whatever the size.” The event saw 18 finalists battling it out in eight categories, with winners chosen by a panel of experts. There was also a special award – Renewables Champion, sponsored by RSM in Hull. ■ See inside for a full round-up of the winners and finalists.
