lanning appears to be everything when it comes to ensuring the bride and groom get exactly what they wish for on their wedding

While many will still opt for the traditional church service and all it entails, there really is so much choice these days and it is therefore vital that every couple is united in what they want. And it has to be their choice – despite any pressure they may feel from those around them, who will most likely mean well but will not always have the same ideas as those whose day it actually is. So it is an exercise in diplomacy – in ensuring you get what you want without the headache of fall-outs, so maybe a perfect run-up to married life then! Joking aside, it is difficult especially if you are close to friends and loved ones – however, they will respect your wishes if they have the same affection for you as you have for them. At the end of the day it is a happy occasion and one that will stay in the memories of all concerned for a very, very long time. The venue is one of the key elements of success and it is good, therefore, that this special Weddings Journal features so many of them – all with something special and all offering something just a little different from each other. The area has much to offer when it comes to making your day perfect and it really is all about what you want. But hopefully this publication will give you lots of ideas and even more inspiration – you never know, if you have been thinking about marriage for a while it may just give you the nudge to take the plunge! So enjoy our 2016 Autumn weddings special and the best of luck if you are planning a 2017 celebration.

With decades of hands-on wedding catering and event planning experience with brides and grooms in the Lincolnshire and East Midlands area, they are well aware that the smallest of details mean the world to you. Offering their involvement from the initial consultation, right through to the big day itself, the tiniest of details will all be covered and taken care of. As they should be on your big day; it’s the little things that make a big difference, after all. And so that you can be confident in the quality of the food from their dedicated kitchen team, all food is prepared and produced to AA Rosette standard, which means the menus are one less thing to worry about! Not limiting themselves to catering, Vincere Hospitality can also provide other elements of the day for you; DJs, live music, stunning mobile bars, room décor and whatever else you want to help create your magical day. Wherever your venue,

Essence of calm

A

ffectionately known as “the Brack, The Brackenborough Hotel, a peaceful rural retreat in Louth, Lincolnshire, has a choice of two wedding venues, offering versatile options for different wedding styles and budgets.

Both venues can hold a large capacity of your friends and loved ones, but the Signature Suite is also ideal for more intimate gatherings. The hotel is also licensed to hold civil ceremonies, with both function rooms offering a beautiful outdoor setting for the wedding ceremony too, weather permitting, and also beautiful private landscaped grounds for photo opportunities. The real difficulty will be which one to choose for your special day‌. Aside from the visual aspect, the strong kitchen team at the hotel offer a wide range of menus, perfectly executed and cooked to

AA Rosette standard, and delivered by an experienced team of front of house staff who offer friendly, yet unobtrusive service. The wedding and events manager, Kate, is the essence of calm, taking everything in her stride and working closely with the happy couple from the initial wedding meeting, right through to the big day itself, even down to providing toastmaster services if required. This means you can relax and enjoy not only the biggest day of your lives, but also the entire planning process will be pleasurable and hassle-free. The Tennyson Suite offers further choice for larger scale celebrations, and is a completely separate venue within the Brackenborough’s carefully landscaped grounds. Now in its fourth wedding season, this stunning and luxurious facility has proved hugely popular so far for large-scale weddings that crave the “exclusivity factor; the venue, and its grounds are self-contained meaning that you and your

guests have sole use of your own private venue for the entire day and night. The tasteful, art deco-inspired dÊcor throughout the Tennyson Suite with its spacious function room and separate, private bar area has been carefully planned in neutral silvers and greys, with spectacular Swarovski chandeliers, and views of the carefully landscaped grounds, including the beautiful bridge over the large, landscaped pond area, as icing on the cake. The venue ultimately offers a stylish blank canvas for brides to bring in any colour scheme, knowing that it will look amazing come the big day – with limitless

photo opportunities to create magical memories. The hotel holds regular open evenings throughout the year, and has a relaxed open-door policy for couples to view the hotel, as well as an appointment system, where they are always keen to stress they don’t rely on the hard-sell, but let the venue shine instead. This all adds up to the undeniable conclusion that the Brackenborough is certainly worth adding to the shortlist for your perfect venue. Quintessentially British venue

9

VENUES

Just half an hour from Lincoln, Woodhall Spa’s Petwood Hotel is a quintessentially British venue for a romantic wedding. EMMA MATHIAS finds out more ....

T

his former country residence is set in the heart of Lincolnshire in the village of Woodhall Spa, nestled amongst 30 acres of beautiful Edwardian

gardens.

Originally built as the home of an Edwardian Baroness, it later served as the Officers Mess for the RAF 617 “Dambusters” Squadron in the Second World War. The Petwood’s historic appeal is felt in the extensive Edwardian oak panelling and the hand-carved staircase, whilst the Squadron Bar is dedicated to its historic wartime officers. The hotel elegantly combines character

and charm with modern facilities, and with its own wellbeing and beauty studio on site, it is a popular choice for weddings. It has its own civil ceremony licence which even allows you to marry outside, in the beautiful grounds. The Petwood Suite: Originally the Ballroom of the house, this elegant room at the heart of the hotel has been host to many a celebration over the years. With its own bar, outside terrace area and a modest stage for live music, the Petwood Suite can seat 80 people for a formal wedding breakfast and holds 120 for your evening reception. For civil ceremonies, the ceremony will be held in the Drawing Room which seats 80 guests and has sweeping views across

the grounds, beautifully carved oak panelling, open fires and a stunning bay window – perfect for your musicians. The Woodland Suite: The largest of the rooms, the Woodland Suite can seat 180 guests to dine and holds 220 including evening guests, it also has its own entrance, bar and terrace. For smaller gatherings the room can be divided to form two smaller venues, the Cedar Suite and the Elm Suite. Civil ceremonies take place in the beautiful Elm Suite with its stunning chandeliers and private terrace, it can seat up to 150 ceremony guests. The Garden Room: For more intimate weddings of close family and friends the Garden Room is perfect. Light and airy, it has double doors leading straight into the

garden, perfect during the summer months, or with its open fireplace can become warm and cosy during winter. The Garden Room seats up to 30 people for your wedding breakfast. Temple Gardens: For a truly fabulous location, you can now marry in the Temple Gardens. The extensive grounds at Petwood are well known for their parkland feel and the blooming rhododendron walks are a riot of pinks and purples in May. A large lily pond and several water fountains are a photographer’s dream and provide a beautiful backdrop to your wedding photographs. Choosing a venue

EMMA MATHIAS shares behind-the-scenes secrets of her wedding eight years ago and gives some top tips for how to choose the perfect venue ...

W

hen it comes to choosing a venue for your big day, what are the main things you should be

considering?

First and foremost – and yes, this is the most difficult part – think of yourselves. Where do you want to get married? Do you want a small wedding or a large wedding? How many do you want there? Weddings are well known for, in some cases, causing family controversy but don’t be swayed by what the mother-in-law wants or be forced into inviting Great Aunt Betty from the Outer Hebrides, who you haven’t since you were in reception class at school. I recently heard about a wedding in the first stages of planning and a meeting between mother and daughter to decide on the guests. The bride-to-be had been through things with the groom while the mother was doing a back-up list to make sure they hadn’t forgotten anyone. The bride and groom’s list contained the names of just 80 guests for their small, romantic wedding. The mother, however, had very different ideas. When a list of over 150 people, in addition the 80 on the bride’s list, was produced, storm clouds gathered in the living room! For my wedding, my husband and I had all sorts of ideas as to where we should marry. Mine was the Ice Hotel, in Sweden, while his, well I don’t think he had much of an idea, actually ... except that he didn’t want to spend the first night of married life in a minus 12 degree ice cube! Looking at a little hamlet we could rent in Italy, we realised that our budget would have meant spending the entire honeymoon with our families which, while we love them very much, was not our idea of a romantic getaway. Discussing it over a drink in the local pub, we came to the conclusion that we didn’t want a huge wedding and my husband wanted a civil ceremony. With this in mind, we ventured around every venue available in the area – there

are many more venues offering civil ceremonies now, compared to eight years ago – and, although many were lovely, the ones we liked were too far for some of our elderly guests to get to, without hiring a bus and that would mean that everyone had to go home at the same time. We also concluded that we wanted a venue that had only one wedding that day as I didn’t fancy the idea of running into a 22-year-old, size eight bride looking like something from a magazine cover! So that led us back to where we had been a few weeks previously ... precisely nowhere. That said, we at least knew that we wanted the venue to be closer to town and churches were now an option for our ceremony. Now, as much as we liked the area in which we lived, we didn’t go a lot on the local church so we ventured a little further from our parish – by a few hundred metres, going on the parish border – to be met with a resounding “no” from the vicar and his assistant. We were told we would have to be married in our local church and that was final. A little despondent, with abandoning everything and just the two of us eloping to a Caribbean island looking like a plan, we struck gold when I contacted the vicar of the church in which I was Christened. Not only was he very helpful, telling us he would gladly marry us in his church, he also told us that the quaint and very beautiful 13th century church close to one of our favoured reception venues could be made available to us. With seating for just 70 people inside, this was all looking very promising. Going through our guest list one last time, we concluded that inviting only my aunts and uncles, as opposed to the hordes of cousins and their children that I have on one side of my family, was the best way forward. My husband’s family is small so it would have looked a little one-sided had we invited the paternal masses. The bottom line when considering your wedding venue, without letting things get too complicated, is to make sure you are doing predominantly what you want, as a

couple, while allowing a couple of guests and ideas to flow in from the rest of the family, or people helping to foot the bill! In short: ■ Think about what sort of wedding you want. You might want a festival vibe, so you will need a venue that has outdoor space and possibly a marquee, or you might want a small, intimate wedding, in which case you need to look for venues that cater for a minimum of 20 people. Or, you might want to go abroad to marry and head back for an evening wedding reception in which case you will need a venue available for the evening only. ■ Civil ceremony or church wedding? Most major venues have marriage licences now, so you should have your pick of the bunch. And don’t be put off if you want to marry in a church outside of your parish ... it is possible we just met with a grumpy vicar! You won’t know unless you try. ■ Think about how many people you want at your wedding. This is key to finding the right venue. And don’t feel pressured into inviting every available family member. Not only will this make

your wedding day less special, looking out at faces you don’t even recognise, it can also become very costly. Your big day is about you and your partner. ■ Does your venue need to be close to home or can it be further afield? There are some lovely options around the county, many of which have a good number of rooms for guests. When choosing a faraway option, do think of the expense, though, as some people might not be able to afford the cost of a hotel room, unless you are footing the bill entirely. ■ Do you want a venue that only has one wedding each day? There are plenty of choices locally. ■ Finally, don’t get too bogged down in all of the above. Keep it simple and try to make definite decisions. Then stick to them. If you are the sort of person that has never had a dream wedding in mind, rule out the things you both don’t want and focus on the things you do. If you are uncertain about anything, revisit it as you don’t want to have any regrets ... this should be the most fabulous day of your lives ...

Multi-cultural ideas

M

aybe you were proposed to in a far away clime and want a wedding theme to reflect a happy time? Or maybe you are looking for wedding ideas for your own culture?

Read on for wedding traditions from around the globe to give you inspiration for your big day … ■ Birth dates and astrological signs play a big part when choosing a date for a Chinese wedding. The ceremony will always begin on the half hour in order to celebrate good fortune. The bride is bathed in citrus-infused water the night before, to rid all evil prior to the day, and she will change into no less than three outfits during the event. The groom will see himself tested throughout the wedding, by the bridesmaids, in order to prove his worth, before he is permitted to pick up his future bride. Parasols, firecrackers, traditional tea and a meal with many courses will be seen at a Chinese wedding. ■ Indian weddings traditionally last several days and will incorporate the

As Great Britain is now very much a multi-cultural society, EMMA MATHIAS takes a look at some of the traditions associated with weddings in other parts of the globe … painting of hands and feet with intricate designs, called a mehndi, a party the night before the main ceremony and many rituals. Instead of exchanging rings, a Mangala Sutra, or a cord with three knots and two gold pendants, is tied around the bride’s neck. Once the Mangala Sutra has been tied by the groom, the necklace becomes a symbol of the couples marriage and means the couple’s souls will remain together for 100 years. ■ In the Polish community, many weddings are generally Catholic, though there are several superstitions to be wary of during the big day. A bride cannot wear open-toed shoes as future fortune may ‘fly’ through the open toes nor must they wear real pearls as they will bring a lifetime of misery. Polish weddings are held when there is an ‘r’ in the month, according to the Polish language, not English. This rule is said to

bring luck to the marriage. The bridal veil is kept on until midnight when ‘oczepiny’ takes place and it is removed. Nowadays, oczepiny is a time for fun and games though traditionally, the bride would have her long, girlish hair unbraided and cut, symbolising her new marital status. After the wedding, it is usual to throw coins over the happy couple and gifts are often cash. ■ In Romanian weddings, a couple must traditionally have an unmarried best man and bridesmaids. They will choose godparents who will be their advisers and will sit with them, at a separate table, throughout the wedding. The godparents must be married. Two brides must not see one another during the wedding day as this is a sign of bad luck and divorce. A bucket of water will be placed near

the door to the church and guests will throw in coins as they pass. After the ceremony, the bride and groom will gently move the buckets, spilling the water and washing away all future problems. Children will collect the coins after the ritual. During the wedding, the bride will be ‘kidnapped’ by friends or bridesmaids and taken to a local landmark. The groom must then pay a ransom to get her back. This could be money or bottles of beer! If it is after midnight, the godfather must pay the ransom. ■ In many African weddings, ‘jumping the broom’ is a part of the ceremony with the couple jumping over a decorated broom once they are married. When slavery was in force, couples were forbidden to marry so they created the jumping over a broom as a symbol of their new life together. Representing different times in a couple’s married life, the bride and groom will often ‘taste’ the four elements. These are lemon, for sour, vinegar, for bitter, cayenne pepper, for hot, and honey, for sweet. African foods may be served at the wedding and entertainment could come in the form of a traditional drummer and African dancers.

Samantha Donner said: “We can make the wedding into a whole weekend event, not just for a day. “We offer a number of packages to help people with their wedding budgets as we know weddings can be expensive and we are also flexible and can tailor the day to suit your needs. “We invite couples to come and meet us, look around and discuss their ideas so that we can make their day as special as possible. Samantha added: “The grounds at Kenwick offer a beautiful backdrop, with a traditional and romantic setting that make it perfect to hold your wedding ceremony and reception. “Our outdoor pavilion has proved popular for civil ceremonies but we always have a back-up plan, just in case the weather isn’t great. Samantha and the team pride themselves in creating a bespoke wedding as every wedding day is a once in a lifetime experience. They strive to make each occasion as individual as you are. Their flexible approach enables you to

create the wedding you have dreamed of. There are no set options or restrictions at Kenwick and staff do everything they can to help you plan and budget your day. Of course, there are many more options available in between and the venue can cater for up to 400 people. It is so much more than simply a picture-perfect location and any memorable day wouldn’t be complete without a bit of pampering, leisure time and perhaps a round of golf? The brand new Clubspa opened its doors in June 2016, to local acclaim, boasting a 20-metre pool, thermal suite, sauna, Tepidarium and much more. The Evergreen Spa houses 10 treatment rooms and boasts a number of packages from a pre-occasion top-to-toe pamper to essential grooming treatments, available as a residential or day package or for a one-off appointment. Kenwick brides can choose to have their make-up applied on the wedding day. Bridal packages are available and trials can be booked prior to the big day. For the groomsmen the Kenwick Park Golf Course is the ideal place for that pre-wedding golf match or weekend away on the championship, standard, 18-hole course, located next to the hotel grounds. estled at the foot of the Wolds, Ashby-cum-Fenby’s Hall Farm is a truly magical place for your wedding day.

With a licence for civil ceremonies, recent years have seen couples with a choice of venues in which to be married. Owners Matthew and Angela Durrant have a good relationship with the Rector of nearby St Peter’s Church, where couples can be wed before taking a stroll across the road to Hall Farm for the celebration. Or, couples can choose the Ashby Room for a short, intimate service.

And it is probably the intimate nature of Hall Farm that makes it so special. In The Fenby Room, 100 people can be seated for a delicious, sit-down meal while 150 can be catered for at an evening reception. And the food at Hall Farm is equally personal with the happy couple given plenty of locally-sourced options prior to the big day. Angela said: “Hall Farm is perfect for people wanting a rustic, barn-style wedding out in the countryside. “We have everything a couple could need, all under one roof, and we have eight hotel rooms for the nearest and dearest.

“Weddings at Hall Farm are a truly personal experience so come and visit us, get a feel for the place and soak up the charm of the location.” Angela, Matthew and their staff like to encourage couples to tailor the whole event to their needs and with plenty of options, this really is a fantastic venue in which to create some magical memories. traditional members only golf club since 1908, Holme Hall is renowned for being the course that discovered Tony Jacklin.

A 120-acre mixture of parkland and heath land, it recently received championship status, and is a must play for visitors both locally and nationally. Looking out from the patio of the large and well-appointed clubhouse, the scene is so beautiful and tranquil that Holme Hall now offers wedding packages. Wedding and events coordinator, Cathy McArthur, was appointed in 2015 and has not been surprised by the amount of

interest in the venue. She said: “The club has all a bride and groom would need. “The venue is gorgeous and it is a safe environment for our guests, especially children. “The club house facilities are up to date, there is a top-class catering team in place, and all the parking you need. For years the club was more than happy to let members hold their receptions in the clubhouse, but it didn’t occur to anyone that the general public might want to come here. All of a sudden we had a couple of enquiries, then a couple more, and now we receive a steady stream. We are already booking for 2018 and 2019.” The design of the clubhouse allows

Cathy to cater for both large and more intimate weddings, with bespoke packages available for all budgets. The club makes the course available to guests, either to play before the wedding or as a photo opportunity. Cathy said: “The club is very much looking to develop as a venue. “We have invested heavily in our

catering facilities and in our staff training, with a strong focus on the customer experience, but we do not want to lose the feeling that you are actually spending time at a golf club. We are growing on the golf side with the club hosting national championships aimed at growing our reputation beyond Lincolnshire.” To find out more, call 01724 862078.

Owner Cindy Marshall-Day – a former soap star and Journal beauty columnist – says the property provides absolutely everything a couple needs. “It is a one-stop shop for all your wedding needs,” she explained. “You don’t have to shop around, if you don’t want to. We can do all of your venue styling for you, including the flowers, if you would like us to. “We only do one wedding a day so the wedding party has the whole venue to themselves which I think is a real added bonus. “We have bedrooms in the house and are in the process of going through planning to build lodges on the estate. “We have been doing weddings at Walcot for ten seasons now, and are certainly regarded as one of the top venues in Lincolnshire. We were actually short-listed in the prestigious UK wedding awards, as one of the top 16 stately home venues in the entire country! “Also, Walcot Hall was recently featured on the BBCs Don’t Tell The Bride and we now have people coming to get married here from as far away as London. “We are also proud to say that our wedding planner, Julie Orrell, has been awarded Best Independent Wedding Planner for the whole of the East Midlands.” Julie, who is exceptionally organised

and professional, can provide full wedding planning expertise to our couples. “The whole team that work here are absolutely amazing,” said Cindy. “Weddings always run seamlessly and we always receive lots of compliments from the wedding couples and their guests.” You can experience the ultimate in wedding bliss if you choose to get married at Walcot Hall, thanks to their state-of-the-art, £45,000 fully-equipped marquee. Cindy added: “A marquee is the perfect place for a wedding. Ours is top-of-the-range with crystal vintage chandeliers and starry sky – it’s just magical and provides plenty of space. “If you want the perfect wedding, Walcot Hall is the place to have it.” Cindy, who has been a model since she was eight years old, is a former actress and has appeared in Crossroads, as well as being a model on The Price Is Right. She describes herself as an entrepreneur – which is fitting for someone who runs a number of businesses, including Flowers From Heaven, Heavenly Venue Styling and Heavenly Horse. Cindy, who is the head designer at Walcot Hall, has a degree in floristry, which she obtained from Bishop Burton College five years ago and with her head florist, Julie King, they have a total of 25 years’ experience between them. This year, due to popular demand, weddings can also be held in the conservatory at Walcot so you can either get married outside, which is such a popular choice nowadays, or within the hall itself. Walcot also does weddings in the hall for up to 80 people, as well as Christenings and popular naming ceremonies. Mention The Journal when booking your wedding during 2016 and you will receive a complimentary bridal bouquet and groom’s buttonhole. L

OCATED in the heart of Brigg is a historic wedding venue that offers bespoke and very reasonably-priced packages for couples on their big day.

Bespoke decoration, super wedding breakfasts and varied evening food choices are just some of the services The Angel Suite has to offer. You can dance the night away in the 18th century ballroom, enjoy a bespoke cocktail from the upper cocktail bar or chill in the cosy lounge area with a drink from the lounge bar. This magnificent period building is perfectly suited to wedding celebrations, if you choose to get married in one of the local churches or following a civil ceremony at The Buttercross. The latter is an equally stunning period room located in the market place and complements The Angel Suite perfectly. Angel Suite manager Karen Deeley said guests get personal use of the building on the day. She said: “You get exclusive use of the suite. If you go to some venues, you have three or four other weddings also taking place. There is a choice of caterers and a choice of food options.

We offer a bespoke service and it can be tailored to any budget.” Mrs Deeley said a couple can hire the suite for a full day to do what they want to themselves for £350. She said the average price for a full package is around £2,000 to £2,500 and this includes all the decorations and all the food for the daytime. She continued: “We have had everything from Steampunk weddings through to superheroes and vintage weddings. We have built up a good repertoire with local companies. We try and use local businesses as much as possible. We really want to reach local people, it is a community venue. We are not here to take masses of money, we are here to provide a service for the people of Brigg.” The Angel Suite was officially opened in 1995 following the final phase of the renovation of the old Angel Hotel, which has a long history in the town. The large, light and airy hall on the upper floor, known as the ballroom, has a traditional sprung and polished wooden floor, which is great for dancing on. It also boasts 11 grand-arched windows and a further lounge area adjacent to the bar, as well as the option of a cocktail bar upstairs. Call 01652 659402 for details.

Breaking all of the rules

34 THE JOURNAL

FEATURE

W

hen it comes to getting dressed up for a wedding, there are so many ‘rules’ to follow that most end up being a sea of men in boring grey suits and women in humdrum floral frocks. But unless you’re at an ultra-conservative church do, most of this so-called protocol is outdated, and actually, pushing the boundaries can pay off style-wise, helping you stand out from the play-it-safe crowd. Here’s how to (tastefully) break the rules this wedding season... ■ Be the black sheep The rule: Don’t wear black! If your everyday wardrobe consists of black, black and more black, don’t think

Even more hotly contested than the ‘bouquet catch’ is the competition to be best-dressed wedding guest. KATIE WRIGHT reveals how to (tastefully) stand out from the crowd this season ... you have to abandon your go-to hue for someone else’s big day – but remember that wearing it head-to-toe in a church is going to look decidedly funereal. Instead, look for a dress that breaks up the expanse of black with a print or texture – lace is ideal – and add intensely coloured accessories to lift the look. ■ Flash a little flesh The rule: Never wear a crop top The crucial word here is LITTLE: a V-neck halter crop top and mini skirt are going to attract stares for all the wrong reasons, but a tiny sliver of midriff is acceptable. That sliver shouldn’t include your belly button, however – pair high-waisted trousers, a pencil or full prom skirt (no shorter than knee-length) with a crop top in a structured fabric, like jacquard. There are lots of matching co-ords in the shops at the moment that are the

perfect proportions, thereby taking out the suitability guesswork. ■ Be red-y for anything The rule: Don’t wear red Red used to signify vampish and vulgar, but as long as you don’t turn up in a thigh-slit Jessica Rabbit-esque number, you needn’t worry. A pretty red lace or modern minimalist dress is totally wedding-appropriate, especially when teamed with more traditional floral footwear. It’s all about balance. ■ Play your strong suit The rule: It has to be a dress ‘I’ve got to get a dress for a wedding’, we so often whine, but why not use the occasion to step out of your comfort zone and try a suit? Tailoring is having a huge fashion moment, so the shops are full of gorgeous

floral and pastel two-pieces that you can jazz up with jewellery and heels. The other advantage of a suit is that you’ll get more post-wedding wear out of the separates, unlike the glitzy gowns that mostly hang unworn in our wardrobes for months (years, even) after the big day. ■ Wave the white flag The rule: Don’t wear white It’s the most contentious etiquette question of all: is it ever OK for a guest to wear white to a wedding? Modern manners dictate that you can, but with caution. The key is that it can’t look bridal in any way, so steer well clear of frothy all-white looks, in favour of sharp modern cuts and prints. Use the 50/50 rule (no more than half of the outfit should be white), and make sure you include a bright jacket or scarf in the mix.

Looking radiant on your wedding day

I

love Bobbi Brown make-up and their skincare line and for this edition of the Wedding Journal I have chosen my top eight products from this gorgeous range to help create the most amazing look for your big day. First, let’s start by taking a look at skincare because a beautiful canvas on which to apply make-up is absolutely key! I adore and personally use all these products ... ■ Buffing Grains for Face (£32) made from adzuki bean powder. This product should be used twice a week and can be added to your cleanser or with water. Exfoliating regularly helps promote cell turnover and removes any dead skin. ■ To keep skin soft and supple I recommend Bobbi’s Extra Face Oil (£42.50). This moisturising, softening and conditioning blend of vitamin E, sesame, sweet almond, olive and jojoba oil helps keep skin soft and supple. This is suitable for anyone with normal to extra dry skin. The product contains all the rich, moisturising benefits you’d expect from a face oil without the greasiness. The

BEAUTY: MORE THAN JUST SKIN DEEP lightweight formula absorbs easily and immediately into the skin. Pat on clean skin in the morning and at night or whenever you need an extra shot of moisture ■ Now that your skin is super clean, smooth and moisturised, it is time to think about make-up. I recommend using Vitamin Enriched Face Base (£40) before applying foundation. This is a Bobbi Brown bestseller—a primer plus moisturiser for the smoothest make-up application ever. Rich in feel, but never greasy, this advanced oil-free face formula, with shea butter, instantly hydrates, softens

and cushions skin. ■ For a beautiful bridal foundation, try Bobbi’s SPF Tinted Moisturising Balm (£37) which is a lightweight foundation alternative for dry, dehydrated skin. The formula is ultra-rich and blends easily, giving skin a dewy look with light coverage. ■ I love to mix the above product with Bobbi’s Illuminating Moisture Balm (£42.50). Perfect for any bride who wants illuminated skin that looks and feels fresher, smoother and plumper. It can also be used alone on neck, shoulders and décolleté for a subtle glow.

Bobbi Brown Creamy Corrector

■ Bobbi Brown’s Corrector (£19.50) and Concealer (£19.50). Designed for maximum coverage, wear the corrector under the Creamy Concealer. Using a concealer brush apply corrector as close as possible to the lash line and on the innermost corner of the eye. Gently blend with your fingers. Layer Creamy Concealer directly over the corrector. This essential corrector brightens and covers discolouration under the eyes utilising a pink or peach-based formula to neutralise dark circles. Lightly dust with powder when both products have been applied. Voila! Perfect under eyes! These products are also smudgeproof and waterproof. ■ Hands are so important, especially once we get over 30 years of age. I think it’s always good to invest in a great hand cream and my favourite one of all time is from the Bobbi Brown Extra range (£22). This wonderful hand cream is pure TLC for hands and the ultra-luxe formula moisturises and helps repair dryness instantly. Available at www.bobbibrown.com Cindy xx

PROPERTY

The homemakers

E

very bride and groom would like a home of their own after their nuptials though, for many, a house purchase is all too often aspirational.

This is where the booming rental market comes in and with so much property to choose from, the new Mr and Mrs simply can’t go wrong. Of course, a rental property also means that you can be a little more fluid about where you rest your weary head every evening, with properties available for both short-term and long-term leases. One thing you have to be certain of is that the property company you are using will make your dreams come true and won’t be the stuff of nightmares! Angela Powell Property Management, based in Hibaldstow, North Lincolnshire, has been in business for 25 years, celebrating its silver anniversary in 2017. An extremely reputable company, with more than 300 properties to let in the region, you can be sure that Angela and her staff will only ever work in your best interests. Angela said: “The idea of letting houses was prompted by a friend who needed help with two cottages. The rent was not being received and the property was falling into decline. “After helping to run the family building business for more than 20 years, this was a challenge worth taking up!” Rachel Robinson, office manager and employee at the firm for 20 years, continued: “Initially, the reputation of her father’s company, called Hornbuckle, Mitchell & Co, helped Angela to hit the ground running though the building firm was later wound down so that she could pursue her own, thriving company.” And thrive it has. Angela currently employs five friendly staff and the team consider themselves to be more like a family – and it may be due to this family-like environment that

As couples, particularly the younger ones, are finding it increasingly difficult to purchase a property after their weddings, many will be looking around for reputable companies to provide the rental home of their marital dreams. EMMA MATHIAS finds out more about Angela Powell Property Management ... customers warm to the letting agents as soon as they walk through the door or pick up the telephone. Rachel said: “We have a lot of local individuals who use Angela Powell to let out their properties and a lot of local farmers, who often have more than one property to let. “We only do lettings, we don’t do property sales, as it’s much more personable. We can build up relationships with the landlords and the tenants. “When you are buying and selling, once the property is sold, it’s gone ... that’s it! It’s much nicer when you can go home at night knowing that you have made people happy in their homes.” Angela Powell Property Management covers much of the county going as far west as Epworth, over to Barton in the north, to Great Coates in the east and as far as Caenby Corner to the south. Rachel said: “We deal with a lot of nice people, whether they are tenants or landlords, and pride ourselves in finding the right people for the properties. “We treat every house as if it was our own which makes us equally careful about getting good references. “On the one hand, we are looking after someone’s investment and on the other, we can often be helping people to start a life together or build a family. It is important for both parties that we find the right place and everyone is happy.” In addition to letting property, Angela Powell and her team also offers a furniture rental service.

Rachel said: “We cover the whole range, from bedroom furniture and beds through to sofas and dining tables, much of which is either Ikea or Ikea-style modern furniture. “As we can often let executive homes to businessmen and women – we are seeing a lot more from the Humber bank wind farms – this service has been invaluable. Who wants to bring a whole truck full of furniture to an area they are only staying in for a short period of time?” And for newlyweds, the furniture rental

service could be just as useful, though couples shouldn’t be in short supply of a few toasters and photo frames after their big day! And while Angela herself begins to spend more of her time playing the “golf game”, Rachel and the team continue to work away, tailoring each property to the right people. “We have good local area knowledge, can talk through where each house is situated - particularly in terms of schools and doctors - and are always on hand to give support and advice,” Rachel finished. “We all get on famously in the office and hope this comes across to our customers. We all strive to give a good, solid service.” Angela Powell Property Management is approved by the National Approved Letting Scheme and can be contacted by calling 01652 654269 or by visiting the website at www.angelapowell.co.uk

‘Pic’ the right one When it comes to your wedding photos, it is important to do a bit of research prior to booking your photographer and the big day ahead. Here are some top tips for creating perfect memories ... CHOOSE THE RIGHT PHOTOGRAPHER There are many photographers out there of varying price and ability. Arrange to meet them well in advance and make sure you feel comfortable working with them. Ask to view examples of their latest work and recent albums so you can get an idea of how your big day would be photographed. The majority of their work comes from recommendations so speak to friends and family to find out who they used and if they recommend them.

INFORMATION Take time to discuss the type of pictures you want. Do you require photos of every stage of the day right through from bridal preparations to the first dance? Do you want a mixture of posed and documentary pictures? Some brides like to make a list of the group shots they require and give it to the photographer before the big day. It’s also important to talk through the timings of the day. Have you allowed long enough to get the pictures you require? It’s also important to remember to enjoy your day rather than spending the whole time posing for pictures!

INVESTIGATE YOUR LOCATION It’s important that both you and your photographer are aware of the best locations for photos at your chosen venue. Is there a beach or garden nearby where you can nip off to for 15 minutes of romantic photos? Be creative, discuss it with your photographer and make sure they are prepared for any special requests.

GET THE RIGHT PACKAGE Make sure that you end up with the package that you want. Don’t be

persuaded into paying for extras that you don’t really require. A good photographer should be flexible and tailor packages to suit your needs – whether it be DVDs, albums, invitations, canvas wraps, thank you cards or all of the above.

PICTURE STYLE

photo booth offers a sentimental touch to any occasion. A unique way of keeping mementos of your big day, it comes as no surprise that photo booths have seen a surge in popularity. They now feature on the wish lists of most modern brides. Snapz Photobooth Hire was established in 2013 and since then has built a reputation based on professionalism and enthusiasm. Its popularity is clear – in three years they have been to more than 800 events, making them the most experienced photo booth team in the Lincolnshire area. Snapz offer a range of photography packages and their team of professional photographers work diligently to provide a service that is perfect for you. The Snapz team are no strangers to working at weddings. They have worked in many of Lincolnshire’s top wedding venues including The Oaklands Hotel, The Brackenborough, Laceby Manor and the Humber Royal. As well as the photo booth, Snapz also offers wedding photography. Snapz wedding photography packages

start from £400 and photobooth packages start from £240. Snapz is owned by James Thundercliffe and Charlotte Louis. The idea came about after they went to a wedding in 2011 which had a photo booth. “It was something we had never seen before,” James said. “We thought it was a really good idea and at the time it was something that wasn’t in the area. We do a range of events but weddings are our most popular. “I think people enjoy them so much because it’s entertaining, a good laugh and people can let their hair down. The best thing is the memories. “We give the bride and groom a guest book. Guests can write a message and we do video messages, too. Photo booths are great for people looking for that little bit extra and there’s no better way of keeping those wedding memories.” Snapz is looking forward to the future, with its new offer of a full wedding photography service. With competitive prices and good contacts with local venues, it’s well worth giving them a call. For more information and enquiries call 01472 459092 or go to www.snapzphotobooth.co.uk

Do you want a mixture of colour and black and white image? A “vintage-look” effect is very popular right now. Can your photographer supply you with the look you desire? Styles change over the years so it’s important to think whether you will be as happy with your pictures in 40 years as you are today.

CO-ORDINATION IS KEY If you are having both a photographer and a videographer, make sure they are aware of one another. If they have not worked together before, they need to arrange how the shots will work, ensuring you don’t end up with your videographer in any of your pictures or vice versa.

WEATHER Unfortunately, no one can control this! However, you can make sure you have a contingency plan in case of rain. Speak to your photographer and the venue about areas you can use inside should the worst happen. And don’t get too upset if it does pour down – just be creative, some great pictures can come from poor weather.

ENJOY YOURSELF! Following these broad tips should leave you with nothing to worry about on the day and ensure your photographer can capture all the special moments for you to treasure forever. The most important thing now is that you relax, enjoy yourselves and let your photographer take care of the pictures.

TRANSPORT

When it comes to looking for the right transport for your wedding day, there has never been so much choice. EMMA MATHIAS looks at some of the options ...

W

hen planning your big day, your wedding transport will generally be dictated by three main things ... your budget, number of people travelling and your geographical location. First, decide on how much you have to spend on your transport and think about whether you want it to take you, the bridesmaids, the best man and the father of the bride to the church or venue and if you want the same transport, or indeed a different one, to take you and your new bride or groom away after the event. Then have a think about where you live. This may seem odd but if you have a large budget, helicopter flights are becoming increasingly common – make sure your venue has somewhere for it to land – as are boats, if your venue is near the water. If you are choosing something as extravagant as a helicopter, there are limited spaces inside so this is really only an option for one or two people, unless you are hiring the local air to sea rescue service! Boats are a little easier, unless the waterway is quite narrow and the boat very small, as floating vessels come in all shapes and sizes and can accommodate a good few people.

Seeing as most of us don’t live near a heli-pad or a quaint river, the obvious choice for going to your wedding is by road. Nowadays, brides and grooms have the option of everything from spruced-up taxis to limos and VW vans. Here are just a few of the current transport trends: ■Party buses Not a quiet way to start your wedding day but a very lively and fun option. The party bus can often seat up to 40 people, which is a great choice if your wedding is out of town. ■Horse and carriage The poor horse was out of wedding fashion for a while but with the return of all things retro, the horse and carriage has become a vintage must-have. ■Camper vans If you can get hold of a split screen VW, and there are some good hire companies locally, the VW is a very cool way to go to your wedding. Symbolising peace and love, what better way to start your married lives? ■The limo Still as popular as ever, the shiny stretch limo conjures up images of film stars and Hollywood. The vehicles can also seat several people and can easily accommodate a flowing gown and bridesmaids.

WEDDINGS

Sky high proposals W

hen asking the love of your life for their hand in marriage, obviously you want everything to go perfectly, but the more complicated the question-popping scenario, the more chance there is that something will go awry.

Just ask Tristan McGann, whose clifftop proposal made headlines in March when the remote-controlled flying drone that was supposed to deliver the ring to girlfriend Stephanie released its precious cargo too early and nearly dumped it into the Pacific Ocean. Luckily, a friend who was on hand to witness the big moment found the ring, Stephanie said yes, and they all lived happily ever after. Hot on the heels of this narrowly-averted disaster, DronesDirect.co.uk has launched a service that promises to take the stress out of your high-flying occasion.

Want your marriage proposal to become a viral sensation? One company is now offering a drone proposal package to help you do just that. KATIE WRIGHT zooms in on the idea ...

The Wedding Proposal Package includes the hire of two drones – one to deliver the ring and one to film the event – with qualified pilots to steer them and

high-definition video footage to take home. “We were inspired to launch the service following an enquiry by an ambitious romantic who unfortunately got cold feet,”

says MD Tim Morley. “We thought it was a great idea so decided to offer the opportunity to others using our in-house resources, incorporating our very best test drones and qualified pilots.” It’ll cost you though, £4,494.95 to be precise, and that doesn’t include the ring, but it’ll make for an excellent engagement anecdote, not to mention that an elaborate video might garner you 15 minutes of fame if it goes viral. “The package gives the happy couple chance to relive the special moment again, and share footage of the moment with friends and family on social media,” Morley says. “It’s ideal for capturing reactions and stunning location backdrops, as well as adding a brilliantly romantic story to the proposal.” If you do decide to go ahead with an airborne proposal, you’d better be sure the object of your affections is going to say yes, because no one wants to end up on a YouTube compilation of Public Marriage Proposal Fails!

Owners James and Emma Milligan-Manby, who live at nearby Thorganby Hall, had the idea for a holiday let at the former derelict barn while they were taking walks nearby. Former interior designer Emma said: “After I gave up my design business, to raise four children, I decided to challenge myself with a project closer to our home. When this was successful, I turned my hand to converting the barn, which was in a bit of a state, admittedly. “We received a grant, as we are employing local people and were providing a sustainable solution to the barn, so we were able to do exactly as we wanted with the building. “We had great builders and the whole thing was turned around in just 18 months. Marris Barn is not only beautiful it is also in a gorgeous spot, tucked away in the Lincolnshire Wolds. The hills are a designated Area Of Outstanding Natural Beauty and there is plenty to see and do, particularly for those who enjoy being outdoors. The barn has a total of six en-suite bedrooms and an annexe – called The Wagon Shed – provides a further room. The whole area can provide accommodation for between 14 and 16 people. Aside from the beautiful, sympathetically restored beams, tastefully decorated rooms, large, open plan kitchen, dining and living area, there is also a patio with a huge barbecue, hot tub, indoor swimming pool, table tennis table and pool table. It would certainly be difficult to reach a bored state in such a fabulous place! And for those who may wish to bring family, or friends, who may struggle with stairs, the Wagon Shed annexe has been completely kitted out to accommodate wheelchairs.

The large bathroom, with mobility aids, wide doors and space in which to manoeuvre, means that people requiring accommodation with that little bit extra are more than catered for. In addition to steps, the Wagon Shed has been connected to Marris Barn with flat paths, ensuring those with disabilities can join in with the fun in the main living spaces, or the entertainment areas. Of course, no holiday or hen break would be complete without a little treat. Yes, the kitchen is beautiful and has ample space but if you wish to be catered for, there are three local caterers to hand for your party. These include Rachel Green, Becky Miller and Alison Lacey. Weddings can also be catered for in the same way, although, please note, Marris Barn is not licenced to hold actual wedding ceremonies. Guests staying for a hen party could organise a craft workshop with Crafts And Giggles or The Crafty Hen or enjoy a pampering day by booking a mobile beauty therapist. Emma recommends Kerry’s Beauty Box. For something completely different, a new addition to the recommendation list is Wild Woodcraft. Heading into the Thorganby Hall Estate’s woodlands, guests will learn how to forage, make shelters and learn how to use tools safely. Who knew the Lincolnshire Wolds had its own Bear Grylls? And to really spoil yourself over the weekend, why not hire a car from Graham Chapman Classic Cars? Put yourself into your own, Lincolnshire-made Audrey Hepburn movie! And even your pets need not miss out on such a great trip away. There are two kennels at Marris Barn with the overall accommodation declared a “dog friendly spot, so why not bring them along for some outdoor fun, too? PRE-WEDDING TREATS

Simply luxurious

A

s a columnist for The Wedding Journal I was lucky enough to be invited to stay at The Brackenborough Hotel and Kenwick Park Hotel, both in Louth, to find out more about their fantastic hen party packages.

First, I visited The Brackenborough, which I found to be a fabulously stylish boutique hotel. Set in acres of perfectly maintained grounds, this is a lovely hotel and the knowledgeable and friendly staff can really help create a hen night to remember. My friend and I started off our evening with a mixology masterclass, with one of their “cocktail gurus” showing us how to create a couple of classic cocktails. We were shown how to make a Cosmopolitan and an Espresso Martini in a detailed step-by-step demo at the cocktail bar. We were then allowed to get stuck in and were delighted with our end result! Once finished, we then moved to the VIP room with our cocktails for a delicious afternoon tea, consisting of all the yummy treats you could expect, including freshly baked scones, cakes, sandwiches and several other delicious savoury nibbles. Whilst we relished this little feast we enjoyed watching a couple of girly chick-flicks on the big screen TV. We found afternoon tea was the perfect accompaniment to the cocktails and movie night. The VIP room is then yours to enjoy for the rest of the evening and is laid out like a large, super-stylish sitting room, with comfy armchairs and sofas galore. It’s the ideal setting for any hen games or fun that the girls may have organised too. All of this is available from £27.95 per person, for evening only packages, or £64.95 per person for residential stays, based on two sharing a room.

Journal beauty columnist CINDY MARSHALL-DAY tries out two Lincolnshire venues which are simply perfect for a pre-wedding pamper or hen party ... There are 24 individually designed rooms to choose from so straight after our cocktail session we changed into our pyjamas for a proper girly night in the VIP room! Being an independent business this fabulous hotel can tailor your hen package to your own specific requirements. Call the team on 01507 609169 for more information. I also had the pleasure of visiting and spending the most amazing weekend at Kenwick Park. The hotel offers the most extensive range of pampering treatments, indulgent spa days and relaxing overnight spa stays, which are perfect for a very civilised girly spa break or, for that matter, the boys too; the hotel has fantastic, locally-renowned golfing facilities.

Kenwick has recently undergone a massive revamp with a brand new £4.5 million state of the art Club Spa, which opened this year; it is quite simply breath-taking. I eagerly anticipated the visit to experience the new health and beauty facilities and also enjoyed the most wonderful overnight spa stay in one of the unique woodland lodges, which can sleep up to six people. The combination of spa facilities, treatments and delicious food makes Kenwick the most perfect place to relax and unwind. Club Spa has 10 treatment rooms including two twin rooms. I enjoyed two lovely treatments during my stay that I’d highly recommend.

Facilities at Kenwick Park’s Club Spa.

Afternoon tea at The Brackenborough.

First was the Luxury Decadent Gold and Caviar Facial Spa Factory Facial (£55). This luxurious treatment contains active ingredients including 24 carat gold and caviar extract and is a deeply nourishing treatment which is ideal for smoothing, hydrating and leaving the skin youthfully revitalised. I followed this with an Organic Chocolate Body Wrap (£50). This treatment was gorgeous as the pure chocolate, rich in nourishing cocoa butter, provided the most luxurious body mask to nourish and treat the skin. The treatment included a light body brush followed by the application of the dark chocolate wrap. Once I was cocooned in the wrap I was treated to a mini facial and, to finish, a light massage with a dry body oil to further hydrate my skin. After our pamper session we retired to the ‘Relaxation Room’, which was very tranquil with dimmed chandeliers and comfy beds with fluffy throws on – definitely designed to snooze, chat or relax upon! The new club is very impressive and the facilities are, in my opinion, second-to-none. These include the 20-metre indoor swimming pool with stunning timber roof ceiling, a poolside thermal spa suite with Tepidarium, a sauna, steam room, ice room, foot spa and feature tropical showers. Additionally, there is a Jacuzzi-style spa pool and outdoor hydrotherapy pool. Within this beautiful complex is also an exclusive spa lounge offering lunch, afternoon teas and refreshments. Included within our package was afternoon tea, which was an absolutely delicious assortment of scones, cakes and sandwiches, all washed down nicely with a cheeky glass of fizz! Prices start at £59. Visit www.clubspakenwick.co.uk or telephone 01507 608806 or 01507 353008 for more information and to make your reservation.

THE LAW

Civil partnerships A s we are nearing two years since same-sex marriages were made legal, we take a look at the law when it comes to marriage and civil

partnership.

Here, we share some of the interesting, legal requirements in Britain today: Anyone can marry or have a civil partnership as long as they are aged 16 and over. Both parties must be single, divorced or widowed. Trying to remarry while also being married to another person carries a potential sentence of up to seven years in prison or a fine. In some cases, people have been given both. If you are under the age of 18 years you will still need to gain permission from a parent or guardian before you marry. Only same sex couples can form a civil partnership. Couples made up of the opposite sex must marry, either through a registry office or a church.

EMMA MATHIAS takes a look at some of the legal requirements for marriage and civil partnerships in Britain today ...

Same sex couples can now marry in England, Scotland and Wales. They can form a civil partnership in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. It is possible to convert an existing

civil partnership into a marriage in England, Scotland and Wales. There are different requirements for civil partnerships in Northern Ireland. Same sex couples cannot be married in

an Anglican church but may be married in a church of another faith, if they give permission. For any marriage or civil partnership, notice must be given to the local registry office. This applies wherever you marry, whether it is a church or a licensed venue. Couples must marry at least 28 days after giving notice for the wedding. If you have a wedding coordinator or a vicar, often this is arranged for you but do check. When marrying abroad, you may have to acquire documents from UK authorities prior to travel. You will be responsible for obtaining these but you should be instructed as to what you will need by the wedding coordinator or contact abroad. It is possible you may need ‘a certificate of no impediment’. Similar to church banns, a notice of your impending marriage will appear publicly in the register office for 28 days after notification. Persons registering the marriage must have lived in the registration district for at least seven days.

THINK PRE-NUPS ARE ONLY FOR THE RICH AND FAMOUS?

There are always two witnesses at any marriage ceremony or civil partnership. Bear this in mind if you choose to marry with no family or friends there as you may, as has been done before, have to grab a couple off the street! In some American states, couples are required to take a blood test prior to marrying. If you plan to marry in the US, seek advice before being subjected to this unusual practice. Weddings in Las Vegas generally do not require a blood test to have been completed before the marriage. Pre-nuptial agreements are now becoming more and more common in the UK. Seek advice from a solicitor if you

are looking at a pre-nup before your wedding. After your wedding, if you have a joint bank account with your spouse, the money legally belongs to both account holders. But beware any debts associated with the account are also both account holder’s responsibilities! If a couple is cohabiting and one dies without leaving a will, the surviving partner will not automatically inherit. If one of a married couple dies without a will, the surviving partner will inherit all or a part of the estate. For more information on the law and marriage, visit www.gov.uk

Think again, as Mark Carlton, senior partner and family law expert explains. Pre-nuptial agreements may not conjure up the most romantic connotations but they can be an extremely important part of your prewedding plans and are becoming more common place amongst couples who are planning to wed. Famous people who should have had a pre-nuptial agreement and didn’t have been a lesson to us all. Reportedly, Paul McCartney and Heather McCartney-Mills decided not to have a pre-nup. Their acrimonious divorce saw Mrs McCartney-Mills dramatically sack her solicitor and represent herself in proceedings in the High Court. It was reported in May that divorcing couple Johnny Depp and Amber Heard do not have a pre-nup despite his alleged $400 million dollar fortune. We’ll have to wait and see how this works out for them. However, the conscious uncoupling of other famous couples has been handled in a far more discreet and private manner. Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes did have a pre-nup which enabled him to obtain a relatively cheap and straightforward divorce from Katie Holmes. This was helped by the terms of a carefully drafted pre-nuptial agreement entered into by the parties when they were able to think clearly and sensibly about what would be fair and appropriate, should they ever separate.

Mark Carlton

Individuals who are marrying for the second or third time and who have experienced an acrimonious divorce, often explore the option of a well drafted pre-nuptial agreement, in order to avoid a similar situation arising in the future. For a pre-nuptial agreement to be binding upon the parties, legal advice should be sought beforehand. The agreement needs to be entered into freely, and with all assets and income in existence being openly declared. A prenuptial agreement should be drawn up and signed at least 28 days prior to the wedding date but we would recommend ideally 2 - 3 months beforehand. Ultimately, the court will have the discretion to decide whether a prenuptial agreement should be held as binding upon the parties. A well drafted agreement can, and often will, be upheld by the court and is a significant factor for the court to take into account when considering the financial aspects of any divorce. It’s not just the rich and famous who have assets to protect and children to provide for. Making a pre-nuptial agreement part of your pre-marriage planning will help make your future as certain and secure as possible.

Not all honeymooners want to spend their first days as a married couple on a secluded island in the middle of nowhere ... even if that nowhere is the Caribbean! From breezing down the red carpet to riding waves, LISA HAYNES checks out Huntington Beach, the surfers’ hangout where Hollywood celebrities head to wind down ...

HONEYMOONS

Love California ...

I

t’s barely dawn and I’m bleary-eyed and carrying a yoga mat towards the ocean. The 6.15am wake-up call suddenly feels less brutal, however, when minutes later, I’m breathing through a sun salutation with rolling waves as the live soundtrack.

“Listen to the ocean and feel the sunbeams on your face,” our yoga instructor Jordan says soothingly, as we hover in tree poses. Balancing barefoot on the sands of Huntington Beach, I quickly discover life pretty much revolves around the ocean here, and little wonder... Dubbed Surf City USA, the uninterrupted stretch of golden coastline feels a million miles away from the Hollywood hustle (more of that later). Think technicolour surf shops on every corner, the wetsuit uniform as standard,

athletic bods cycling/rollerblading/running past, giant boards tucked under their arms. Huntington plays host to some 90 surf tournaments year-round, including the world-famous US Open. Scanning the event calendar, I’m devastated I’ll narrowly miss out on seeing four-legged wave pros in action during the annual Surf City Surf Dog contest. Winning categories include ‘Best Wipeout’ and ‘Best Crowd Pleaser’. Not wanting to be trumped by pooches, we balance on boards the easier way, with stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) lessons at Huntington Harbour, where the water’s tranquil and flanked by glossy waterfront houses and yachts. It’s a family-orientated spot, where children as young as four are on the water navigating mini kayaks and surfboards. Our surf-meets-canoe activity is led by local pro-surfer Rocky McKinnon. Within seconds he’s assessed the board and

paddle each of us should use based on our height, build and skill level: “Beginners are better suited to wider, longer boards for stability,” he tells me, sensing my fear. Rocky shows us how to glide forwards, turn and stop with minimum wobble, until we feel like SUP pros after just 45 minutes on water. At Huntington Beach, it doesn’t feel like people are working out for a red carpet appearance; it’s more outdoorsy and raw – and it’s infectious. Instead of reading by the pool (my usual favourite pastime), I hire a bike instead. I cycle along the paved boardwalk from my beachfront Hyatt Regency hotel to neighbouring Newport Beach and back, with the Pacific breeze for air-conditioning and the long line of volleyball nets as my navigation system. At night, the beach totally transforms, with the palm trees illuminated by flickering balls of open-fires. More than

500 fire rings are scattered throughout the beach and they’re free to use, but on a first-come, first-served basis. We treat ourselves to the more luxurious option of a VIP ‘fire butler’ of sorts – someone who stokes the fire, sets up chairs, and keeps our drinks topped-up as we warm our jet-lagged faces around the flames. He tells us the most popular fire pit positions are hotly contested: “At weekends, people stake out the best pits in the early afternoon to use at night. But when it’s something like the fourth of July, whoah, they can be queuing from 5am!“ We toast s’mores, the US campfire delicacy of chocolate biscuits and marshmallows sandwiched together, and munch them quickly before the marshmallow melts into our laps. I feel like I’m in a scene from The O.C.. From beach life to the high life, we

THE JOURNAL

leave Huntington behind and drive the hour-and-a-half to buzzy West Hollywood, where there’s a marked contrast in the pace of life. I’m thankful for all the earlier ocean zen, because WeHo is anything but. We check in at the uber-glam Mondrian Hotel on Sunset Boulevard, and marshmallows around the fire soon shift to Martini cocktails around the Skybar pool, with beach views replaced by Hollywood Hills property porn. Rooftop hotels and bars are the best place to fully absorb the bright lights and twinkling skylines on a balmy night in West Hollywood, and E.P & L.P is one of the hottest new hangouts – complete with epic views of Hollywood Hills to Downtown LA. We arrive for our reservation at the same time as 300’s Gerard Butler, and Orange Is the New Black’s Ruby Rose sits next to us as we’re served dinner downstairs.

For more impromptu celebrity spots, WeHo’s super-cool Design District is an A-list magnet by day. Designer giants are interspersed with local boutiques like Maxfield, Curve and Intermix, where the Kardashian clan do their shopping hauls. Strolling around Maxfield on Melrose Avenue is like entering a treasure trove of designer pieces that belong in a Hollywood Hills mansion display cabinet. I become over-excited by a pair of Elisabeth Weinstock python boxing gloves and super-sized 1,500g Diptyque candle (the average size is 190g). Whipping out my iPhone to document them on my Instagram feed, I’m swiftly interrupted... “Um, madam, sorry, no pictures in here please,” the shop assistant politely instructs. My local LA pal tells me it’s to protect the celebrity clientele. A few weeks later, I notice Justin Bieber is in the very same boutique, filming a Carpool Karaoke

segment with James Corden. For some mid-Melrose fashion fuel, we stop off at the cult Alfred Coffee – takeaway cups are branded with the Instagram-able ‘But first, coffee’ slogan – and snapping photos is most definitely allowed. The fuchsia pink Paul Smith store on Melrose also makes for a Pinterest-friendly posing spot. Other trendy WeHo hangouts with paparazzi at the ready are Urth Caffe (setting of many an Entourage scene) and hip vegan-Mexican joint Gracias Madre, where Beyonce and Jay Z go to grab a healthy lunch. Following their lead, we dine in the picturesque al fresco courtyard and share repollitos fritos (Brussels sprouts, cilantro almond pesto and lemon), and tacos stuffed with sweet potato, guacamole and cashew nacho cheese. Divine, and without rap star prices. We get one final rooftop-and-blue-sky fix before boarding our Air New Zealand

49

flight home, at LAX’s very A-list-worthy Star Alliance Lounge. Catching rays on the glass open-air terrace, we top-up our SPF one last time, sip on Kir Royales and toast the Hollywood Hills in the distance. Hey, there’s even a roaring fire pit, but this one comes without the toasted s’mores... ■ Lisa Haynes was a guest of Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach Resort & Spa, where rooms cost from 214 US dollars per night - visit the website at huntingtonbea ch.regency.hyatt.com – and West Hollywood’s Mondrian LA, where rooms cost from 299 US dollars per night (www.mondrianhotel.com). Dream venue

W

When it comes to the perfect wedding, Stallingborough Grange can offer couples just about anything they want to ensure their big day is utterly fabulous! EMMA MATHIAS takes a look around ...

For more than 25 years, the venue has been a much sought-after place for couples in North East Lincolnshire and beyond. Mindful of attention to detail, the Stallingborough Grange staff are on hand to tend to your every need, ensuring that you will have a day to remember. The family-run hotel is particularly unique in that it is one of the only hotels in the region with a thatched roof. Newly-renovated, just three years ago, the roof is a feature which gives the premises a real, country feel and is a big attraction for customers when they are choosing their wedding venue. Heather Dutton, who has been general manager at Stallingborough Grange for almost 25 years, said: “The thatching gives the hotel that extra sparkle. “It is one of the few venues in the area that provides a real old-fashioned background, particularly for weddings and the photographs that come with them.” The quaint little lake at the side of the building is ideal for romantic wedding photographs while there are plenty of lush, green areas for pictures to be taken of

large, family groups. The lawn can also act as a ‘welcome area’ where drinks can be served to guests as they arrive. Heather continued: “We are constantly updating the premises and trying to keep things fresh. “We endeavour to create the perfect day for the happy couple and their wedding guests, which includes helping them with any themes they might have for their day. “Recently, a couple held a festival-themed wedding. The function room was decorated with bright colours and there were lots of fairy lights dotted about the room. “It’s fun to do these types of weddings, and we will help the couples to organise things on the run-up to the wedding, though we also have plenty of people preferring a more traditional look. “We do hold a list of trusted, local businesses who can help with room decor, flowers and such. “This can be discussed with our functions manager, Harriet Belcher, when people are at that point.”

hatever you want from your wedding, a dedicated team at the popular Stallingborough Grange can help to make your dreams come true.

Of course, Stallingborough Grange also has 42 bedrooms available for guests, which includes the bridal suite – comfortable and perfect for a good night’s sleep at the end of a busy, happy day.
