WELCOME 3

don’t let anything derail your fantastic festive plans IN CASE you had not noticed, winter is here! Already this year we have had more than our fair share of rain tumbling down, bringing with it the associated problems for home-owners!

Then there is yourself and your family to look after too! Is your elderly mum or dad warm enough and did you get the right information needed to ensure they can claim those cold weather payments that you have heard about?

That tile you meant to get repaired on the roof is now letting the raindrops in and the cold is begin to push its way in through those windows and doors that you meant to get sorted!

Many of us have very busy lives, and all the above are things that we can forget to do as we enjoy the summer months – forgetting that the dark and cold nights will be upon us before we know it.

And then you venture out to your car – has the anti-freeze been topped up and where is that de-icer that you had left over from last year?

However, there is still time to act…and you can use our handy and local service guide to find the right professionals to help you in your hour

of need! These workmen and women are all tradespeople who are likely to know exactly the problems you are having and will be happy to help you as you look to ensuring that you and your loved ones remain safe, warm and healthy this winter. And remember, they are all available for 12 months of the year, so make a pledge in 2017 to compile a list of all the jobs that need doing before the winter comes around again! We hope this helps. Have a very Happy Christmas, and a great New Year.

4 HOME SECURITY

SIMPLE STEPS TO PROTECT YOURSELF AND YOUR PROPERTY WITH the shortest day of the year coming up, safety experts in Lincolnshire have issued a number of tips to ensure people stay safe over the festive period and the coming winter weeks ahead.

your house

Be careful not to advertise your movements when visiting public places or using social media sites like Facebook

Here is our simple guide to helping you protect your home and yourself:

When out and about keep expensive items out of sight and close to you at all times

Most burglars are opportunists Make sure you use a light timer switch to make it look like you’re at home

Consider property marking your expensive and valuable items

▷ One in five burglaries take place

through unsecure windows and doors, so keep them locked - don’t let them in!

▷ Do not leave your house or car keys

in a visible and easy to reach place in

▷ Do not leave property on display in your car

Consider personal safety when travelling at night, avoid dark short cuts and always let someone know where you are going

Register your valuables for free on the National Property Database at www.immobilise.com

Plan journeys in advance and remember to book a licensed taxi before heading out for the night

The firm based, on Grimsby’s Yarborough Road, will celebrate its 21st birthday next June 2017, something which owner and director Tony Howden is incredibly proud of - having started the business in 1996 from the “back of a car!” Safe & Secure Ltd offers a dual service to customers, with a range of new products and repairs including; Upvc soffit, fascia, guttering, windows, doors and conservatory repairs, spare parts and installations. They can also replace double glazing, locks, handles and mechanisms. The team of seven, including reception

The team I have are fantastic, they are really nice people, there’s not a bad one amongst us. It’s all down to their hard work that we are here today.” The firm prides itself on their high level of customer care, putting customer satisfaction as their top priority. “We don’t work on high pressure sales,” continued Tony. “We do bend over backwards to help other people. We don’t really close over Christmas and offer a call out service.” Safe & Secure have worked on larger scale buildings including Humberside Airport’s control tower.

PERSONAL SAFETY 7

staying safe over the festive season POOR visibility and quiet roads exacerbate safety risks after dark. There are lots of things that you can do to avoid the attention of opportunists so take a moment to read this afterdark safety guide, from www. personalsafetyadvice.co.uk Think safe – and avoid becoming a target.

MONEY AND CARDS Assess where you are keeping your valuables when you’re out after dark. Choose a zipped or buckled bag (open bags are tempting for pickpockets), roomy enough to hold everything at once, with a secret compartment for high-value items. If you have more than one bag it can be easy to forget or drop one (or more!). When you’re in a foreign city or out very late, it’s a good idea to keep spare cash (including change for a telephone box) in a different pocket. If the worst happens and you’re relieved of your wallet, you will have enough to get home. If you’re concerned, you could use a money belt – worn inside your clothing, it provides a safe and discreet home for your cards and money. Openly using an MP3, camera or mobile phone can make you a target; these items are the most commonly stolen, so tuck them away when you are walking after dark.

CHOOSING YOUR ROUTE Use roads that are well-lit, avoiding dark alleyways and parks. Before leaving the house, store taxi and routefinder numbers on your mobile phone. Walk confidently and purposefully, looking around – most crimes are opportunistic, so don’t give anyone cause to

target you.

WOMEN TRAVELLING ALONE

If you’re often walking at night, or you live near a busy road, it’s a good idea to buy reflective clothing. You needn’t be dressed from head to toe in bright yellow gear: you can buy shoes with reflective stripes, reflective wristbands, or reflective tape, which can be stuck onto your jacket or trousers.

Women are particularly vulnerable to additional threats at night. Quiet streets, unlicensed taxi drivers and busy drinking venues can all pose threats. In bars or restaurants, don’t let your drink or food out of your sight, and don’t accept cigarettes from strangers either – they could be soaked in chemicals that inhibit your system. If you catch a taxi on your own, call it directly from your phone and make sure the taxi driver has your name. Don’t jump into the first taxi that pulls up – unlicensed cabs are increasingly common, with ten women being attacked every month in the capital.

For joggers and walkers, reflective outer vests are great for making you visible to drivers and other people. Walk on the right side of the road, so that you are facing oncoming cars.

WALKING AND USING PUBLIC TRANSPORT If you are getting home on foot, don’t use a mobile phone or MP3 player – you can be too distracted to notice things happening around you. Walk calmly and confidently; if you’re in a crowd, keep your bag tucked under one arm, and don’t try to push in the opposite direction. If you should get lost on your way home, there are now telephone directions services – for a monthly subscription, you have access to a local-rate number where operators are available to identify your location and talk you through your route home (or elsewhere). Public transport is another option. On a bus, sit close to the driver, and ask to get off if anyone makes you feel uncomfortable.

SAFETY EQUIPMENT From personal alarms to reflective clothes and numbers on your phone book, a little forward-thinking means you will be well equipped to deal with an emergency. Before you leave, check for all the essentials, and add useful numbers to your mobile phone – local taxi firms, friends, local police and hospitals. You might also include a ‘Directions’ service if you subscribe to one. Personal alarms are cheaply available and give you extra moral support if you’re nervous about walking alone. The very best safety equipment you can take out with you after dark? A good friend to watch your back.

WARM UP FOR WINTER FITTING solid wall insulation can be a lot of work and expense, but it can also make a big difference to how warm your home feels and how high your heating bills are. 1) SO SOLID? Most pre-1920 properties (and some later than that) were built with solid walls. It’s easy to tell whether your home’s walls are solid or have a cavity - take a look outside and if you see both long and short bricks, they’re solid because the short bricks go through the wall. If the walls are rendered, try measuring a wall by a window or door - walls less than 26cm deep should be solid. Solid walls are harder and more expensive to insulate than cavity walls, but the expected savings are greater.

2) READY, SET, RENOVATE Insulating solid walls isn’t straightforward and may be something you want to leave to the professionals, although internal wall insulation can be fitted by DIYers. Perhaps the easiest method is to use insulated plasterboard, which comes in different thicknesses. Another option is to build a stud wall

along the exterior wall and fill that with insulation. This will make the room a bit smaller and, in both cases, you’ll have to remove and then refit or replace the skirting boards, door frames, coving, etc, so it’s a lot of work and disruption. For this reason, insulating walls internally is often best left until you’re renovating the room.

3) GO OUTDOORS External wall insulation is less disruptive - usually, insulation material (such as expanded-polystyrene sheets) is fixed to the exterior walls and covered with cladding or render. This method has a number of benefits,

including improving soundproofing and weatherproofing, as well as making the inside warmer.

4) SPECULATE TO SAVE According to the Energy Saving Trust (www.energysavingtrust.org.uk), internal wall insulation costs around £3,500 to £14,000, while external wall insulation is around £8,000 to £22,000, depending on the size of the property. The Trust estimates that annual savings in fuel bills will be around £455 for a detached house, £260 for a semi and £175 for a mid-terrace house in England, Scotland and Wales, based on a house with gas central heating.

5) FIT FOIL FAST If insulating your home’s exterior walls seems like too much work and expense, there is a much easier way to reduce heat loss through them. Radiators tend to be on outside walls because they’re usually fitted under windows, which means the heat from the radiators can go outside into the cold as well as into the room. Fitting radiator foil behind the radiators will help to stop heat escaping through the walls, making it feel warmer indoors.

10 HOME MAINTENANCE

Don’t hit the roof this christmas PROPER home maintenance is a chore that takes up most homeowner’s weekend.

A THOROUGH INSPECTION It is critically important to inspect the entire surface of your roof for damage. If you limit your inspection to specific portions of your roof you could miss other problem areas that are not easily detectable. The inspection should include verifying that the roof material is securely bonded to the underlying substrate and that all fasteners (nails, screws, etc) are in place and intact. Any suspect areas or materials should be marked for repair or replacement.

SURFACE PREPARATION Once the areas to be repaired have been identified, it is time to prepare the surfaces of those identified areas. In order to accept any patching/sealing materials all applicable surfaces must be clean, dry and free of contaminates.

REPAIR AND PATCHING Once all identified surface areas have been cleaned and dried the next step is to patch and seal all areas that were identified during the inspection process. There are a variety of patch/seal materials available on the market today.

APPLICATION AND COATING Once all damaged areas have been repaired, it is necessary to apply a coating/sealant to the surface of the repaired areas. The coating/sealant can be applied with a brush or tank sprayer. There are hundreds of roofers in your area, so how do you know which one is best? When it comes to roof repair, you want a qualified and professional contractor that takes the time to answer any questions you may have along the way.

As with any home repair, shopping around to find the best contractor is of utmost importance. Homeowners insurance can be a life saver when it comes to costly repairs. However, many people may not be aware that their insurance does not cover certain repairs or the cost of replacing certain items. Finding out what is and is not covered under your homeowners insurance can save you from financial disaster down the road. Don’t hit the roof this christmas

Put some energy into saving on your bills THE clocks have gone back and the days are getting colder, so if you’re worried about a chill on your finances this winter, now’s the time to do something about it. Firstly, you’re likely to be reaching to turn on the heating as temperatures fall, but when was the last time you switched energy deals? Even if the last time you switched was only last winter, now might be a good time to switch again, as many people are only on a one-year fix. A recent survey suggested millions of households are paying more for their energy than they need to, because they mistakenly believe they’re on the cheapest tariff. Even if you have switched

recently, it may be worth checking whether your old energy supplier still owes you cash if you were in credit when you switched. If you can stand to be a bit chillier, it may also be worth bearing in mind that lowering your thermostat by just 1C can potentially add up to savings of £80 to £85 per year. More than three quarters of people (77%) have experienced a seasonal problem in their home previously, according to research from E.ON Energy. Yet many of us seem to push previous memories of burst pipes and faulty heating aside as more than half (58%) of us don’t prepare for winter. Some people may be entitled to free help with saving energy, thanks to the schemes available.

sleeping soundly over winter THERE is never a time when sleep isn’t important. But with the shorter, vitamin D-deprived days, gloomy weather - and the dread that it’s going to drag on for months - at this time of year, solid slumber is more vital than ever. Here are some things to think about if you want to win at winter sleep:

HOT AND COLD Nobody wants to lie shivering in bed with feet like ice blocks. But overheating can actually be more detrimental to sleep, so it’s important to get the temperature just right. “Ideally, the brain temperature needs to

TECH IT OR LEAVE IT

be fractionally lower than the body’s core temperature, so ideally your bedroom needs to be cool, around 19C,” says physiologist and sleep expert Dr Nerina Ramlakhan.

COMFORT IS KEY A comfortable bed, that’s just right for you, makes a big difference - but often it’s only when you actually experience it, that you realise just HOW much. A calm environment can equal a calm mind, but when it comes to designing your bedroom, “quality of sleep should be the top priority”, notes James Cox, co-founder and CEO of British brand Simba Sleep.

We bang on about the importance of stepping away from those screens before bedtime, but the message just isn’t getting through for many of us (according to a recent survey by Simba Sleep, almost one in six Brits spend at least two hours a day on social media in bed). Bottom line: if you want to nail a solid sleeping routine, you need to switch off those devices.

WHAT’S ON THE MENU Just as we think about fuelling up in the morning, with energy-boosting breakfasts and those all-important caffeine kicks, if you’re aiming to improve your sleep, the same theory applies at the end of the day - in reverse. Running yourself a bath is a fantastic way to embrace self-care, treat yourself to a little luxury, and really switch from manic ‘day mode’ to relaxed and sleepready (and it’ll help with dragging yourself away from those screens, too). Even once a week, a bath is worthwhile, and alchemist, aromatherapist and intuitive body worker Michelle RoquesO’Neil, says even a 10-minute bath will make a difference when you don’t have time for a half-hour soak.

Proud to work with age concern AS WINTER edges ever closer, we all know how important it is to keep your property in good working order. And long-established Grimsby firm Reads Property are once again proving why there are few better places to ensure your property is safe and secure, no matter whether its domestic or commercial. As well as offering a 24-hour emergency call-out, the Ladysmith Road company are able to provide inspection and safety certification for landlords and commercial properties for the inspection of gas, water and electrical services. They will issue a certificate to landlords and businesses as part of this service. In addition, they will ensure that checks are carried annually with a free reminder service to put minds at ease. It is this level of service which has enabled the firm to swell in size. Last month the company announced that it was to expand its premises. Chris Read, managing director of Reads Property Commercial and Residential Improvements Limited, said how the business would “sway from residential improvements and move over to commercial work only.” “We have just signed two contracts with Associated British Ports (ABP) in Grimsby and also with Age Concern. I hope to move the company more towards commercial improvements and take a step back from residential,”

he said. As reported, the contract signed with Age Concern will see refurbishments take place on a 33-year-old building in Cleethorpes, which has been derelict for the last ten years. They also hope to sign contracts with Hanover Housing Association, which is aimed at the elderly, as part of their commercial change over. “These developments will see the need for more staff. We will need more gas engineers and multi-skilled tradesmen. The business is not considered small fish anymore, we have 10 vans already and we are expanding the premises,” he said. Chris is a member of Construction Line, a company stressing the need for health and safety and ensuring companies are “jumping through the right hoops.” As well as Construction Line, Reads Property Improvements are also accredited with Acclaim Association and Environment Agency just to name a couple. HOW TO STAY SAFE ON WINTER ROADS FORECASTING the weather is an imprecise science but winter drivers should be prepared for all eventualities. Already the Institute of Advanced Motorists has launched a winter driving campaign to help motorists prepare their cars and drive them safely this winter. The organisation points out that slippery roads due to adverse weather contributed to 13,420 road casualties in 2011, and related to 79 fatalities. It adds that rain, sleet, snow or fog was the cause of 1,786 reported road casualties last year. IAM chief executive Simon Best said: “The first thing you need to ask when the weather is bad is whether you need to travel. “When you are on the road, be prepared to slow down and take extra care, particularly on bends and roads which are open to the elements.” But even if the weather is not that bad there are simple steps all drivers should take to ensure their cars are ready for winter.

TOP TIPS FOR TROUBLE FREE WINTER MOTORING: Firstly, make sure your car is properly serviced. Some garages will offer free or low cost winter health checks. Mazda dealers have announced such a scheme where technicians will also inspect your car’s fluid levels, shock absorbers, drive belt, lights and wipers, as well as the operation of the airconditioning to ensure it will quickly and effectively demist the windows during cold weather. Secondly consider fitting winter tyres. These are not studded snow tyres as used on the Continent but have a different rubber compound which is designed to improve grip at low temperatures. Continental has just launched its latest winter tyre, the ContiWinterContact TS850 which is suitable for a wide range of cars from compact, to mid size. Continental says the tyre offers better grip on wintry roads as well as shorter braking distances in the wet, enhanced handling, extended mileage and a further reduction in rolling resistance to

help economy. Most tyre service centres can arrange for your regular tyres to be stored over the winter and refitted in the spring. OTHER THINGS TO DO INCLUDE: Once the car is ready for winter you should make sure it is also carrying emergency equipment, so that if the worst happens, you are ready too. Your check list of useful supplies should include a torch, spare batteries and bulbs; spare alternator drive belt; screen scraper/de-icer; jump leads; warning triangle; first-aid kit; a ‘hands free’ mobile phone, phone card and cash; blankets and warm jacket (in case of breakdown); shovel (to clear snow if necessary); a fire extinguisher; a rope (for towing if necessary); a road atlas, or maps of the area where you are travelling. And finally make sure you are aware of road conditions on your route before setting off and then drive appropriately and moderate your speed for slippery surfaces.

driving HOME FOR CHRISTMAS? MANY PEOPLE HIT THE ROADS TO BE WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS FOR THE FESTIVE SEASON, OFTEN IN POOR LIGHT. HERE’S WHAT TO CONSIDER

WITH the dark nights upon us, Spanish car maker SEAT has issued safety guidelines to remind motorists of potential hazards when travelling in poor light. Turn on your low beams at dusk for better visibility and to be seen. You must drive with low beams at night, when it is raining or with poor visibility. The main beam should be used whenever possible, to avoid dazzling oncoming traffic.

Some vehicles are equipped with an automatic dipped beam system that turns the lights on and off depending on exterior light conditions. Some 90 per cent of the information needed to drive is processed through our sense of sight, and as visual perception decreases at night it takes longer to identify pedestrians, animals or traffic signals. In these cases, LED headlamps are a great ally, as they generate better light quality than halogen bulbs and the light they emit is very similar to daylight,

which greatly improves visibility. Adapt your speed to be able to brake within the headlamp range. It is advisable to drive slower than you normally would during the day. MAINTAIN A SAFE DISTANCE Leave a margin of no less than three seconds between you and the car in front of you. RECOGNISE EARLY SIGNS OF FATIGUE, SUCH AS IF YOUR EYES FEEL HEAVY A tell-tale sign is if you have trouble

WINTER MOTORING 23

Hail: the Billion dollar hazard THE stormy weather we have witnessed in recent years has brought home the many the dangers of driving through severe hail storms.

staying within your lane or if it is hard to remember where you have driven in the last mile. Drowsiness affects your reflexes and the effect is similar to driving with a blood alcohol level of 0.5 grams per litre. At the first signs of drowsiness it is important to stop and rest or sleep until you can safely continue on your journey. Some vehicles are equipped with a drowsiness detector that identifies when the driver is tired and displays a warning sign on the instrument panel that recommends taking a break.

Hail is something that we tend to take in our stride but when it becomes severe it can be as big a threat to life as sheet ice or heavy fog. Although hailstorms in Britain are only occasional, when they become severe, it is best to be wise and take precautions. The problem is that hail can strike at any time of the year and provides treacherous conditions instantaneously with the ability to see the road seriously impaired and the tyres losing grip. Road safety and breakdown organisation GEM Motoring Assist chief executive David Williams says: “If you find yourself in a hailstorm, consider pulling over to a safe place so that the likelihood of the hail breaking the windscreen is reduced. If possible, park under a bridge or canopy to minimise damage to your car. “If you do decide to pull over, stay in your car. Hail falls at high speeds and can cause injuries. “If you can’t stop under a bridge or canopy, park with your car angled so that the hail will hit the front. After all, your windscreen is reinforced and will be better able to withstand the pelting it could from a hailstorm. Glass in the side windows and rear screen is not as strong and will be damaged more easily.” The word hail (frozen rain) together with its German and Dutch relative hagel, comes from the prehistoric West Germanic word hagalaz, which is related to the Greek word kakhlex, which means pebble. Hailstones consist mostly of water ice and measure between five millimetres (0.2 in) and 15 centimetres (6 in) in diameter. Hail is different from sleet because sleet falls in cold weather while hailstones grow much bigger when surface temperatures are higher. Hail is estimated to cause around £705 million in property and crop damage each year. The costliest hailstorm happened in April 2001, from eastern Kansas to southwest Illinois. Property damage in this storm exceeded $2.4 billion (£1.7 billion).

WINTERMAINTENANCE HEALTH 10 26 HOME

perfect winter warmers WINTER is well and truly on its way - which means we’re finally free to forget about ‘bikini bodies’ and build up a layer of ‘insulation’ to keep us going - hurrah! Within reason, of course (we’re not advocating healthy-eating goes out the window entirely). But salads are out, and warming bowls of soup and hearty casseroles are in. If you’re conscious of rising energy bills, however, how can you cook your favourite comfort food in the most energy-efficient way possible? Sarah Scrivener, smart energy expert at British Gas, says: “When fighting the chills with winter warmers, it’s important to remember you don’t need to have the oven on for long periods, when whipping up comfort food in the microwave takes minutes.” She also recommends upgrading to smart meters to see exactly how much money you’re spending in the kitchen in real time as you’re cooking, avoiding surprise energy bills. Here are Scrivener’s top tips for energyefficient winter warmers:

JACKET SPUDS Cook a jacket potato in the microwave for 10 minutes, rather than a whole hour in the oven, and save around 32p. With the average large jacket potato costing 25p, this saving can actually be more than the price of the potato itself!

BEANS ON TOAST Heat baked beans in the microwave rather than on the hob, then let the heat of the beans melt the cheese instead of putting it under the grill. Tuck into beans on toast with this method once a week over the winter months, and you could save 36p.

PUMPKIN PIE Save energy (and precious time) by swapping fresh pumpkin for a handy can of pumpkin puree - the perfect consistency for pie filling. It might be tempting to use fresh pumpkin for this autumn classic, however, avoid using the hob to boil the pumpkin and save 21p when cooking three pies - plenty for celebrating with family and friends.

MAC ‘N’ CHEESE Although macaroni cheese is traditionally made with a white sauce or

roux, there are great recipes for a onepot mac ‘n’ cheese - boil the pasta in milk and allow the starch to thicken the milk into a sauce, then add cheese. By keeping all the ingredients in one pan on the hob and using five-minute quickcook pasta, you can save 24p per four servings. Simply dig in once it’s ready on the hob and skip the oven, and you’ll save a further 11p on top.

SOUP Use a lid to trap heat when making soup. It maintains the same level of boiling without having the hob turned up as high, and can save up to 3% in energy costs per pot. To save even more energy, try making simple soups in the microwave, such as a warming chicken noodle soup - this can save up to 50p for a family serving, versus making it on the hob.

SHEPHERD’S PIE Let the meat thaw in the fridge overnight so it’s ready to cook the next day and pop the potatoes in the microwave until they’re soft enough to mash - without using the hob, you can save £1.20 on your winter supply of shepherd’s pie.

CHOOSE WELL AND STAY WELL A&E ISN’T ALWAYS THE BEST PLACE TO GO. YOU MAY GET MORE APPROPRIATE AND FASTER TREATMENT ELSEWHERE IF YOU or a member of your family becomes ill or injured, choosing the right NHS service can help you get on the road to recovery in no time.

stomach ache, heartburn or trapped wind

Knowing where to turn when you have an urgent health need can sometimes be tricky, though, and that’s why in North East Lincolnshire, we’ve introduced our Single Point of Access (SPA) on 01472 256 256 - one number you can call day or night for advice you can trust and access to urgent medical services.

PHARMACIST

First aid: A well-prepared first aid kit can help treat minor cuts, sprains and bruises Pharmacists can advise on common illnesses such as coughs, colds, aches and pains and the medicines you need to treat them. They can also help you decide whether you need to see a doctor.

So, what are our options?

You can talk to your pharmacist in confidence and you don’t need an appointment. Most pharmacies now have a quiet consultation area where patients can discuss health problems in privacy.

SELF-CARE

YOUR GP (FAMILY DOCTOR)

Sometimes the best person to take care of you is yourself or a family member.

If your pharmacist is unable to deal with your condition or it doesn’t get better after a few days, your GP can help. They provide a range of services by appointment, including medical advice, examinations and prescriptions.

If you live in North Lincolnshire or Lincolnshire you can call NHS 111 for 24/7 help.

You should be prepared for some of the most common ailments by keeping a well-stocked medicine cabinet and firstaid kit at home. A local pharmacist can give you advice on what to have in. Essentials include: Pain relief: Painkillers such as aspirin, paracetamol and ibuprofen are effective at relieving most minor aches and pains Antihistamines: These are useful for allergies and insect bites. They are also helpful if you have hay fever. Fluid replacement drinks: Fever, diarrhoea and vomiting make us lose the water and minerals we need and can lead to dehydration. Fluid replacement drinks can help restore your body’s natural balance of minerals and fluid Indigestion treatment: If you have

If you are not registered with a GP, call the local health advice line on 01472 256256 or visit www.nhs.uk to find one near you. A GP Out of Hours service is available from 6.30pm to 8.00am on weekdays and all day at weekends and on bank holidays. If you think you need a GP appointment out of hours, please ring Single Point of Access on 01472 256256.

Lincolnshire or are registered with a North East Lincolnshire GP. SPA offers confidential advice and information over the phone 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. If you are ill and have any questions about your physical or mental health or if you need to see a GP during the evening, night time or weekends then ring 01472 256 256. You will get through to a team of trained call advisers, who are supported by experienced clinicians. They will ask some questions to assess your symptoms and give you the healthcare advice you need or direct you to the right local service. If they think you need an ambulance, they will send one immediately – just as if you had originally dialled 999. SPA is also for enquiries about adult social care (if you or a relative needs some extra support at home, for example). You can also use this number in the daytime for general advice and support around your mental wellbeing and during the evening/overnight people can access the Mental Health Crisis Service by calling the same number.

A&E OR 999 Emergency services are always extremely busy. You should only attend A&E (sometimes known as “Casualty”) if you are badly hurt, seriously ill or if you have been advised to go there by SPA (or NHS 111), your GP or a Pharmacist. There are A&E departments at the Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital, Scartho Road, Grimsby, DN33 2BA and at Scunthorpe General Hospital, Cliff Gardens, Scunthorpe, North East Lincolnshire DN15 7BH.
