And while Vera is not part of the daily operation of the restaurant anymore, the business is still part of the family. Her son Bill, a retired warrant officer from the .S. The Chalet in Eureka was purchased by Vera Johnson March 1, 1975. The building was originally an ice cream parlor and only seated eight people. By 1981 the restaurant had expanded to nearly double its size, and became known for its hamburgers and soft serve ice cream. Over the years, with more remodeling and hard work, it has turned into the business that it is today. The Chalet is a favorite of locals and visitors alike. It is known for having some of the finest omelettes in Humboldt County. sing only the freshest ingredients available, the restaurant has won the Times Standard’s restaurant awards for “Best Breakfast” and “Best of the North Coast” many times over. Savor Old Town. Taste Oberon. In 1908 Dick’s New Oberon was a popular dining and drinking establishment in Eureka’s Old Town. Since reopening in 2008, Oberon Grill has become equally popular as a dining destination. Using the old photograph of Dick and his barkeeps as inspiration, the Kohl family brought the building back to its original glory. The beautiful mahogany bar was built by Wallace and Hinz, local bar manufacturers. The columns on the bar mirror the detail on the front of the building and features from the old photograph.
Oberon s menu reflects a goal of authentic, clean cuisine. Recipes and specials are prepared in-house, including their handmade burger buns. Ivonne Morgan, the owner and chef, has owned four other restaurants including the well-known Cafe Vienna in Sacramento. After retiring from Cafe Vienna she realized that retirement had come too early. Then a friend who lived in Eureka told her of a perfect little spot on E Street, and she and her son Joseph packed up and moved. fter five years the restaurant outgrew its Street location and moved to Broadway, where you ll still find it today. Their original vision was to perfect the stuffed potato concept and franchise it. To offer a bit of variety, they also offered a different German dish each day, calling upon their background of extensive experience and classical training to prepare their fine uropean cuisine. verybody wanted more and more of the delicious German food, and so a different kind of restaurant developed. Despite having achieved enviable name recognition with the Stuf’t Potato, Ivonne bowed to the inevitable and changed the restaurant’s name to the Vienna Bistro, a more appropriate choice that better reflects its nature.
