Parking Complimentary undesignated parking is available to all registered hotel guests. The hotel cannot be held responsible for items left in vehicles on the property. If you are towing a trailer of any kind please contact the Front Desk about parking options. Pets This facility is a no pet property. Failure to follow our policy can and will result in a $500 room cleaning fee. Due to the rise in allergies and animal dander sensitivities, we ask that you please respect our wishes. All service animals must be declared upon check-in. Service animals are defined as dogs (and under certain circumstances miniature horses) that are individually trained to do work or perform tasks for people with disabilities. Service animals are working animals, not pets. The work or task a service animal has been trained to provide must be directly related to the person’s disability. Animals whose sole function is to provide comfort or emotional support do not qualify as service animals under the ADA. Although we understand your love and affection for them, companion animals are not allowed. We have many wonderful hotels in the area that allow pets; please speak with our Front Desk staff for assistance finding one. Our business supports the advancement achieved and still being strived for by the disabled community. We have the right to exclude any service animal from our facilities whose behavior poses a threat, is uncontrolled, or who display indications that they are not in fact a service animal as defined by the ADA. Such situations can cause confusion and discrimination against individuals who fully depend on their service animals for assistance with basic life needs. Fraudulently misrepresenting an animal as a service animal is a crime under California law. We will report any person who violates the law on our premises to the appropriate authorities. Postage A mailbox is available at the Front Desk. While we do not carry postage stamps, the Front Desk will be happy to provide you with directions to the local post office. TRAVELER SAFETY TIPS Keep the door securely closed whenever you are in your room, and use all of the locking devices provided. Don’t answer the door to your hotel room without verifying who is there. If a person claims to be an employee, call the Front Desk and ask if someone from their staff is supposed to have access to your room and for what purpose. It is standard procedure for hotel staff to contact you first before sending an employee to your room. Hotel staff members will never call your room and ask for credit card numbers or other sensitive information. Please notify the Front Desk if you receive such a call. Do not display large amounts of cash in public. Do not leave cash or other valuables lying out in your room or vehicle. The Best Western PLUS Northwoods Inn provides a complimentary safe in your room. We advise you to use it. When returning to the hotel late in the evening, use the main entrance of the hotel. Be observant and look around before entering the parking area and before leaving your vehicle. If you are traveling with children you must be sure that they have adult supervision at all times. It is not advisable to leave a child under the age of 14 alone inside of a hotel room. No child under the age of 14 is allowed to use the pool facilities unattended. This is for the safety of the child and other guests of our hotel who will be using the pool. Excessive horseplay and loud noise is not acceptable at any time! Keep your room key card with you at all times. Do not leave it unattended in your room, by the swimming pool or elsewhere. Please report any suspicious activity that you observe to the management. EMERGENCY PROCEDURES Please make yourself aware of the emergency procedures listed in this directory to further enhance your safety and security. YOUR BEST DEFENSE AGAINST AN EMERGENCY IS TO PLAN AHEAD.

Safety & Security

Northwoods Inn Crescent City, California

FIRE SAFETY Locate the exits nearest to your room on either side. Be sure they are unlocked and unblocked. Count the doors between your room and the exits so you’ll have a reference if the corridor becomes smoky or dark. If you hear an alarm, ACT, don’t simply wait to investigate later. If there is a fire in your room, get out and close the door. Alert your neighbors. Once out report the fire to the hotel staff right away! In an emergency it is advisable to leave your room if you can. In the case of fire, first feel your door to see if it is hot. If it is cool to the touch, open it slowly. If there is no dense smoke go to the nearest exit. Crawl along the floor if there is smoke; that is where the fresher air will be located. Take your keys so you can go back to your room if you can’t get to an exit. Pull the nearest fire alarm if possible. Proceed quickly but calmly. If your door is hot, DO NOT OPEN IT. Your room may be the safest place to be. Seal all cracks with wet towels and shut off fans and the air conditioner. Call the Fire Department and the Front Desk from your room phone if it is functioning, or from a cell phone. Fill your bathtub with water. Signal for help from your window and wait patiently for rescue to come. Do not break the window or jump from it. EARTHQUAKE SAFETY If you feel any shaking: Drop, cover and hold on: drop down to the floor as soon as you perceive an earthquake has started — drop down before the earthquake drops you down. Then seek shelter under a desk or table. Crouch down on your knees so that you can move with the table. Hold on to the table leg(s) so you can keep the table over you. If there is no nearby desk or table: sit on the floor against an inside wall, away from windows, tall furniture or bookcases. Draw up your knees, bend your head toward your knees. Protect your head and neck with your arms. Go outside once the shaking stops. Make sure you are wearing sturdy shoes before leaving the building. If possible take valuables and medications. Avoid touching downed power lines. If access to exit doors is blocked by earthquake damage, wait for a rescue team.

TSUNAMI SAFETY & EMERGENCY EVACUATIONS All through town and along Hwy 101 there are signs marking nearby evacuation routes to designated safe areas. Please familiarize yourself with these as you explore the Crescent City area. In the event of an earthquake that lasts more than 20 seconds or the sounding of the audible alarm for tsunami alert, there is a pre-planned evacuation route shown on the map on the next page. The nearest gathering point for BW PLUS Northwoods Inn guests is Howland Hill Road on the hill itself. Head there or anywhere at a elevation higher than 9th Street in town. Also head for higher ground if you are at the beach or near the ocean and feel significant earth shaking or see rapidly rising or falling coastal water levels. DO NOT wait for a warning to be announced. Often the first wave may not be the largest. The danger from a tsunami can last up to 12 hours after the arrival of the first wave. Tsunamis move faster than a person can run, and can be 30 feet high or higher; sometimes much higher. Never stay near shore to watch a tsunami come in. Staying calm and listening to the trained Staff Members who will be directing you is extremely important, as they have been trained in the procedures recommended for our area’s unique dangers. All guests are asked to gather together at the Lobby as quickly as possible, and to follow the directives of the Staff in walking cautiously to our evacuation point. Please remember that assistance is appreciated, but please pay close attention and follow the instructions given by Staff carefully — your life may depend on it. Do not try to drive, because this creates an unmanageable level of chaos in the attempts to evacuate. We ask that guests bring any bottled water or necessary items they have with them if they feel it will not hamper the time to escape, including medications and important identification papers they may need (foreign travelers please take heed). It is asked that people who are evacuated follow city instructions and stay out of danger zones until the All Clear is called. We will be looking to Emergency Services provided by Crescent City to assist in evacuation, and we request guests respect their directives.

Both Natural and Official warnings are equally important. Respond to whatever you hear or observe first!

You may be notified that a Tsunami Warning has been issued by: TV and radio stations, door-to-door contact by emergency responders, NOAA weather radios, or in some cases, by outdoor sirens. Move away from the beach and seek more information without using a phone. Tune into local radio or television stations for more information. Follow the directions of emergency personnel who may ask you to evacuate low lying coastal areas.

@Humboldt Earthquake education Center December 2009 Map Date January 2010

• Know the best evacuation route • Walk your route – practice walking your route at night and in stormy weather • Discuss emergency plans with family, coworkers and neighbors • Consider how to evacuate pets – such as dogs on leashes and cats in crates • Prearrange assistance from neighbors if you need help evacuating • Prepare a disaster emergency kit • Take first aid and CPR training – learn more about disaster preparedness

Be Prepared

If evacuation is impossible, go to the upper floor of a sturdy building or climb a tree—this should only be used as a last resort.

GO ON FOOT. Roads and bridges may be damaged by strong ground shaking. Avoid downed power lines.

Protect yourself during the earthquake. • If you are on the beach and feel an earthquake, no matter how small, immediately move inland or to high ground. • In other low lying areas, COUNT how long the earthquake lasts. If you count 20 seconds or more of very strong ground shaking and are located in a tsunami hazard zone, evacuate as soon as it is safe to do so.

How Do I Know If an Earthquake is Big Enough to Cause a Tsunami?

Go to an area 100 feet above sea level or 2 miles inland, away from the coast. If you cannot get this far, go as high as possible. Every foot inland or upwards can make a difference.

Official Warning

Strong ground shaking, a loud ocean roar, or the water receding unusually far exposing the sea floor, are all Nature’s warnings that a tsunami may be coming. If you observe any of these natural warning signs, immediately move to higher ground or inland. Safe areas are shown in gray on the map on the reverse side. Stay away from low areas until told by emergency personnel that the danger has passed. A tsunami may arrive within minutes of any of these natural warning signs and may last for 8 hours or longer.

Two Ways to Find Out a Tsunami May be Coming: Natural Warning

• Successive waves may be spaced ten or more minutes apart and continue arriving for many hours

• The first wave is almost never the largest

A tsunami is a series of waves or surges usually caused by an earthquake beneath the sea floor. Tsunamis can cause great loss of life and property damage where they come ashore.

HEADING TO GRANTS PASS? SEE AND EXPERIENCE THE GLASS FORGE!

Started in 1998 by Lee Wassink, Nathan Sheafor and Butch Kreuzer, The Glass Forge quickly became the “hot spot” of Grants Pass. When entering the 5,000 sq. ft. gallery and studio, viewers can almost touch the molten glass. The furnace that holds 300 pounds of molten glass is always on and running at 2000 F degrees. The blowers take their blowpipes and dip them into the glass, getting an apple-sized gather on the end. After adding color and manipulating

the glass with tools whose designs date back two thousand years, the glass takes shape. The piece is then slowly cooled in a kiln-like oven. The gallery has bowls and vases, sculptures and pendant lights. If you don’t see what you like, you can have it made specifically for you, sometimes even on the same day. Tours are more than welcome, and the only requirement is to call ahead with groups of 10 or more. Kids are also welcome to come and watch

this ancient craft. The studio is open to the public Monday through Friday from 8am to 5pm and Saturday from 10am to 4pm. You can watch glass blowing demonstrations Monday through Friday from 8am to 4-ish pm, and most Saturdays (call ahead). Closed Sundays. On the first Friday of every month, Grants Pass has an Art Walk and the artists of The Glass Forge have the chance to show off their craft from 6 to 9pm.

Watch us create handmade glass using traditional techniques practiced for over 2000 years
