Drone technology growing in Saskatchewan

Photo submitted by Farm World

Continued from page 2 As for the cost of getting the whole kit from Farm World, the prices vary from $5,000 to $26,000, but that price will get you everything you need to use the drone and create the images. Although this technology is great for farmers, they can’t just buy a drone and go and start using it the next day, there are some regulations from Transport Canada they need to check out. Jeff Lettvenuk, Geographic Information Systems mapping lead at Saskatchewan Research Council, said you have to inform Transport Canada when you’re going to be using the drone. “[You] have to notify Transport Canada when you’re doing operations. You have to let everybody know what’s going on, whether they look at it or not, you have to keep a complete flight log of everything you do,” he said. Lettvenuk said you need to record things like the weather and wind speed when flying your drone. He also said that you need to know if there will be people or equipment in the area where you’re flying and let them know what’s going on. Also if you’re flying near an airport, you need to be in contact with them and notify them when you’re flying. During the field day at the centre,

Farm World and SRC both gave a presentation to the people interested in the drones and then gave demos of the two different types of drones, fixed-wing and helicopter. The fixed-wing looks a lot like a miniature airplane and is what the SRC uses, while Farm World uses the helicopter, which has multiple rotors it uses to fly. Pat and Tim Scott, who farm near Nipawin, attended the drone day and said they learned some interesting information. “[We] learned the differences between the copters and the fixedwing. Things like copters [are] more suited to farming and the fixedwing is probably more suited to the environmental stuff,” said Pat. Tim and Pat also said the mapping part of the drone was the most interesting part. “I never really understand how they did that,” said Tim. “How it just flies along there, so many seconds and takes a photograph and stitches it together.” As for getting a drone themselves, Tim and Pat said maybe one day down the line, but they see the best use for the technology for bigger farmers or crop consultants. “I can see it having more of a place with the crop consultants because then they cover lots and lots of acres and then it’s an added service they can do,” said Pat.

Bud Jardine started a career that was classified as dangerous forty-five years ago and he’s still going at it. Jardine is an aerial crop sprayer based out of Torch River who got his start in the business when an infestation had hit the region. “In 1969 we had the first attack of bertha army worms, said Jardine. “There was probably one or two, possibly three airplanes, were kind of flying out of Nipawin and all over, but weren’t in Torch River. It was an isolated area so you couldn’t get an airplane up there at all. This infestation hit and took a fairly big toll on the farmers in the area. Jardine said he and a friend were talking about the insects the next year, 1970, at one of his fields. They looked under the leaves of the plants and saw eggs there. Jardine and his friend said to each other they needed to do something about it, so the two went off in search of airplanes for aerial spraying. Jardine said he got in contact with a meteorologist from Cold Lake, Alta. who had a plane. Jardine was going to buy the plane if he could put booms on it, but as the meteorologist took off back to Cold Lake, he crashed the plane. He was unharmed, but the plane wasn’t in good shape. “I had to start all over again. So then I went on a little tour of my own, I went to Saskatoon and to get information about spraying, everybody was hush, hush, he said. “They didn’t want anybody involved in that because that is their department and they don’t want strangers snooping around or talking.

Jardine then went off to Alberta to find a plane. He was finally successful in finding a plane in Barrhead, Alta. and bought it from a farmer for $5,500. He brought it back home, found some booms for it and then started testing things out. Steven and Marie Green helped him figure things out during that first run. “We put water in it and I put two white flags out in one of my fields and I’d fly from flag to flag and [my friends] would stand [and] would keep moving them out to see how far the water would come out, said Jardine. After he got things figured out, he sprayed his first field that night. “There were power lines and fences in [Green’s] field [and it was] at an angle so I got everything introduced right away, said Jardine. “[I] survived it and then I sprayed mine and then I started to spray all the neighbours at that time and it was just a panic. Jardine was off and flying after that and in the last 45 years, he has not missed a single year of spraying. He thought he might quit in ’74, but with another infestation on the rise, that kept him in the job. When Jardine started out, he said there were a lot less safety precautions back then compared to now. “We didn’t have helmets; there were no harnesses in the airplane, there was nothing. Just a ball cap and go, he said. “When you’re spraying you would have the window closed and when you got to the end [you] would open the window, and breathe fresh air going around, then close it again. [I was] trying to do everything to stay alive, I guess, and not get poisoned. Jardine also said the aircraft has changed a bit. Continued on page 5

A career 45 years long and going strong Continued from page 4 “I think the aircrafts are much more adapted to crops spraying now, instead of just grabbing one out of the lineup and putting a tank on it and going. Other than the safety precautions and planes improving, Jardine said the job is still the same - dangerous. “It’s still a very dangerous job, still very dangerous work, people get killed every year, he said. “[The planes are] just not very forgiving, with all that chemical and gas on board. One memory of danger on the job that Jardine has was when he was first starting out. “When you’re learning to fly, you keep pushing the envelope, pushing the envelope, he said. “I was getting really good at it, I would go down and then pull up [and] then tip it over and come down and then right back in and I’m doing stall turns. Jardine said in his plane at the time, the lever for throttle and chemical were right beside each other. “I pull the damn wrong [lever] and boom she just turned upside down and it was night time, my headlights were heading for the grid road, he said. “I had no control, there was no air going over the flaps, so you can’t move it, so it just falls like a rag. “I remember I had a feeling of regret because so many people told me not to do this. Luckily, Jardine remembered someone telling him that if he got in a situation like that to get on the opposite rudder. He was able to pull the plane around at the last second. “That’s as close as you’ll ever get to getting killed and I didn’t get hurt, not

a scratch. But it took about a minute, maybe two minutes before I had it under control, he said. After that incident, Jardine landed the plane and went home for the night, which he said was the worst thing to do. “When you have something like that happen to you, you have to go right back at it to get over it and I couldn’t, I had all night to think about it, said Jardine. “The next morning it would take me two miles to turn the airplane around. It took a long time to get back and fly like I wanted to. Jardine did get back into the groove of things and his skills with the plane got the attention of his son-in-law, Terry Mialkowsky, who was in the film business. Mialkowsky came out to help Jardine by mixing chemicals. Once he left, he got in contact with a friend who he told about the spraying. The two came out and did some filming and they got in contact with a company in British Columbia and then Dust Up was born. “It actually didn’t change anything for me, that was the nice part about it. We [did] what we always do in Dust Up and that would be recorded, said Jardine. “They just let us go, so that was, it was kind of fun doing it, met a lot of wonderful people doing it. The show, which featured Jardine, his son Brennan, daughter Shannon and Travis Karle, another aerial sprayer, aired for one season and has been replayed all over the world. As for the future of Jardine’s spraying, he said he plans to keep on going. “Well I’m still healthy, I got to play golf all winter and I walk all the time and stay in shape. I think as long as I stay healthy, I’ll keep spraying, he said.

Customer Service Focus of Farm Business BY TERRI EGER Providing farmers with a complete customer service experience is the focus of Phil Gerwing’s business. For the past 12 years Gerwing has been the Dupont Pioneer Sales Representative in the area, working from his farm one mile south of Lake Lenore. A farmer himself, Gerwing has worked the land his whole life, buying his first inputs in 1979. Gerwing had been farming on his own and doing some contract work for different agriculture companies when the opportunity to join Pioneer came up. Today he serves upwards of 150 customers, assisting them with their growing needs. “Since joining Pioneer, I’ve been fortunate to spend time learning from some of the top agronomists in the business. This information has been invaluable to me, and enables me to share this with growers.” Checking crops for pests, disease and crop growth are all part of the service the area rep provides. From getting on his knees to check crops to delivering bags of seed directly to an air

seeder in the field, Gerwing works hard to assist farmers any way he can. In addition, he is constantly monitoring the weather and crop growth. Dupont Pioneer provides producers with a wide range of crop options including early maturing corn and soybeans that works well in the shorter growing season in Saskatchewan. Shatter resistant varieties of canola are on the horizon to better enable straight-cutting options. “We were the first company to offer varieties with sclerotinia protection,” said Gerwing, explaining that the improved technology protects canola from disease. In addition, club root resistant varieties of canola give farmers more options and more protection. For the past five or six years, Gerwing has grown 355 acres of his own, working with a rotation of mainly canola and oats. Having the freedom to set his own schedule and be his own boss make the lifestyle an enjoyable one for Gerwing. “I like the wide variation of the work I do,” he said. “It keeps things interesting.”

The hard work of Saskatchewan’s farmers means that once again the province has shattered records for agriculture exports. In 2014, $13.9 billion worth of exports were sent to 153 countries around the world, a 19% increase from 2013. Our Saskatchewan Party government continues to invest in agriculture, as it is an essential part of our diversi¿ed economy. This year we’ll be spending $362.4 million, with $240 million to fund risk management programs like Crop Insurance Program, which has been enhanced to give producers more choice and Àexibility. On the behalf of Kevington-Wadena constituents, I thank farmers for their work and wish them an excellent harvest.

Protecting bales with 3-D fencing BY DEVAN C. TASA

EDITOR@TISDALERECORDER.CA

In the battle against wildlife noshing freely on the hay bales of cattle producers, the Carrot River Valley Watershed Association has gone 3-D. The association has experimented with a new fencing system called 3-D fencing, used to protect bales from ungulates like elk and deer, over last winter. The system uses

two pairs of electrified fences: the interior fence has three strands of wire while the exterior fence, located a metre away, only had a single strand. Because ungulates’ eyes are located on the sides of their heads, this fencing system creates a visual effect that causes them to slow down. When they sniff the first wire to investigate, they receive an electric shock, discouraging them from going further.

The trial, which took place at Lynn Farm, a 270 cow/calf operation in the RM of Pleasantdale, was the first one in Saskatchewan. “I think it’s just another good tool to help limit the amount of damage the elk are doing. I don’t know if we are able to eliminate it but we can reduce it, said Morgan Leigh, who owns Lynn Farm along with his wife Margaret. Leigh said he uses around 2,000

bales per year, with anywhere from 40 to 140 bales eaten by elk. In the middle of winter, those bales can be expensive and hard to find. Lynne Roszell, the association’s watershed manager, heard about 3-D fencing around 2011 when she was still the technician for the Agri-Environmental Group Plan. The Peace River Forage Association in B.C. has been doing trials since 2010. “I took it to the board chair and it was something that we were very interested in moving forward, trying some trials as none had been done in Saskatchewan at that point, but we weren’t able to get funding and partnerships in place to do it until last fall, she said. Leigh heard about 3-D fencing while he was on the Agri-EnHopper Cones and Steel floors vironmental Group to fit your existing bins Plan’s board. He had an elk problem, so he volunteered for the trial. “It was quite cost-effective for the producer involved, Roszell said. “He was able to use some supplies that he had already had on hand. Continued on page 9

Protecting bales with 3-D fencing Continued from page 8 The Saskatchewan Crop Insurance Program picked up the cost for any additional supplies and equipment, the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture provided technical support and the Agricultural Demonstration of Practices and Technologies program provided funding for the trail’s cameras and administration costs. “Our goal was to make it portable and simple so as we feed in different fields every year we can hopefully put some bales in that field and protect those bales from the elk,” Leigh said. The result was a 65 foot by 150 foot feed storage area protected by the fencing. The fences were propped up with a few treated wood posts, with five-foot rebar posts in between. It took two hours of tractor and post pounder work, and four hours of labour to complete the project. The 3-D fencing system was effective, but there were a few caveats. “The qualifier to that is we had some bale grazing around the area too, so the elk also had another easy target to go to,” Leigh said. The unseasonably warm winter also had an effect. The elk moved in later than usual, not providing any pressure from February until the end of March. Usually the time of con-

cern goes from late December to early April. “But that being said, there was no evidence that any of the elk crossed the 3-D fence and there was no damage at all reported to the feed that was within the 3-D fencing side,” Roszell said. Roszell and Leigh are hoping to do another trial this winter, under normal weather conditions and less bale grazing. There are also trials planned for the North Battleford and Prince Albert areas. “It’s a relatively cheap fencing option compared to an eight foot

elk fence,” Leigh said. “It can be portable and changed quite easily depending on how your operation changes and how much elk pressure you get.” For those producers interested in 3-D fencing, Leigh had a few recommendations. “Make sure that the enclosure is

big enough that the drift around the bales won’t cover up the fence,” he said, He also suggests keeping the bales away from the bush where drifts could have an effect, to get the wooden corner posts in before the ground freezes and to use 12-gauge wire for a permanent fence.

Thank You! For your continued support this Summer. Without you, our buyers & sellers, it would not be possible to have such a successful local business.

Local Area Records Higher Moisture Levels Than Rest of Province BY TERRI EGER Crops in Northeastern Saskatchewan are ripening quickly and harvest is expected to begin soon. According to the weekly crop report issued by the Government of Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture on August 6, less than one per cent of the provincial crop has been combined, while one per cent is ready to straight-cut. “Twenty-three per cent of the fall rye, 10 per cent of the winter wheat, five per cent of the field peas and two per cent of the lentils are now in the bin,” reads the report. “Two per cent of the canola is now swathed.” “The province received a lot of rain during the week of July 28 – August 3, which has lodged many crops and flooded some fields and yards. Topsoil moisture conditions have improved in many areas, thanks to rainfall that ranged from small amounts to well over six inches. During that week, the Tisdale area received 134 mm of rainfall while the Humboldt region recorded 315 mm since April 1, “the greatest amount for both the region and the province.” Cropland topsoil moisture conditions are rated as 13 per cent surplus locally, 85 per cent adequate and two per cent short, compared with provincial numbers of four per

cent surplus, 69 per cent adequate, 24 per cent short and three per cent very short. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as six per cent surplus, 93 per cent adequate and one per cent short in the local area with provincial levels sitting at two per cent surplus, 58 per cent adequate, 33 per cent short and seven per cent very short. Area farmers are busy haying and preparing for the harvest season. “Livestock producers have 75 per cent of the hay crop baled or put into silage,” the ministry says, which is on par with the 80 per cent provincial average. “An additional 13 per cent is cut and will soon be ready for baling.” In terms of hay quality, 75 per cent of local hay is rated as good while 67 per cent of local pasture condition are rated as good, both of which are above the provincial levels of 53 per cent of hay listed as good and 32 per cent of pasture conditions rated as good. “The majority of crop damage this week was caused by strong winds, heavy rain, insects such as aphids and lack of moisture,” reads the report in reference to the province as a whole. In the local area “most crop damage this week was caused by localized flooding and wind.”

Cattle Prices Reach Record Highs BY TERRI EGER Cattle prices over the past two years have been the best in history according to Brad Marceniuk, Livestock Economist with the Government of Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture. “Feeder cattle prices were very strong in March and April, establishing many new record highs. Prices the last two months have trended lower, but not significantly,” he said. Prices in July 2015 were still well above those recorded one year ago, maintaining the record setting high prices. “We are likely not going back to spring highs in the near future but still will be above long-term averages,” said Marceniuk. The Canfax Market Outlook and Summary ending July 31 reported that a total of 2,860

head of cattle were sold in the province during the previous week, up 300 head. The same report stated that 12,905 head of cattle were sold in the province during the five weeks ending July 31, an increase of 700 head during the same five week period the previous year. “Saskatchewan feeder cattle prices have trended overall lower in July from June,” according to the report from the province. “The declining value of the Canadian dollar in July has likely helped cushion some of the price declines. Average feeder cattle prices are however still significantly higher than a year ago.” “Saskatchewan feeder steer prices have been overall lower in July from June declining on average between about $2 and $11

Compact Disc Harrows

per cwt with the lighter weight 400-500 lb weight category having the largest loss. However, year-over-year, feeder steer prices were still significantly higher in July 2015 compared to July 2014. Prices in the 400 to 900 lb weight categories were between about $50 and $73 per cwt higher in July 2015, compared to July 2014.” “Feeder heifer prices were mixed in July 2015 with prices averaging between about $2 per cwt higher to $14 per cwt lower from average June 2015 prices. Lighter weight feeder heifer weight categories had the largest losses in July from June 2015. Yearover-year, average feeder heifer prices in Saskatchewan were between about $54 and $69 per cwt higher in July 2015, compared to July 22014. The largest gains were in the lighter weight 400-600 lb feeder heifer weight categories.” While cattle prices are high, Marceniuk said there are other factors to take into account. “One area of interest looking forward into fall prices will be feed sources and prices. With many areas in Western Canada (particularly Alberta) having poor hay/feed crops this year we may see more movement of cattle to market,” he said adding that the change may put some pressure on prices overall. “United States appears to have another good corn crop on the horizon and with the weaker Canadian dollar we could see more cattle moving south.”

Research organization examining plant growth regulators DEVAN C. TASA

EDITOR@TISDALERECORDER.CA

A local agriculture research organization is looking closer at the use of synthetic compounds used to regulate basic plant hormones in cereals after previous experiments showed a potential yield increase. The Northeast Agriculture Research Foundation is examining three plant growth regulators: Ethrel by Bayer, Manipulator by Engage Agro and Palisade by Syngenta at the Melfort Research Farm. Those plant growth regulators shorten the cereal crop while producing a higher yield and other benefits. “Last year we did the basic experiments: looking at different fertility rates and different timings, said Jessica Pratchler, research agronomist

with the foundation. “That experiment let us know the basic function of plant growth regulators work in the Prairie Provinces. Those experiments showed a 40 to 90 per cent reduction in lodging and a yield increase of 11 bushel per acres – 19.6, using 150 per cent nitrogen. Yet more questions remained, which is why the foundation is doing three different experiments this year. One of the experiments is looking at nitrogen rates, one is looking at fungicide – the shorter plants have a different microclimate, and a third is looking at three application timing for the plant growth regulator: the herbicide timing, the product’s optimal timing and the flag leaf/fungicide timing. “We haven’t done any data analysis

yet but last year we found that no matter how much we push the nitrogen rate, we still found a yield increase, but it wasn’t that one stood out over the rest because of the different combination of factors that also goes into play when increase nitrogen rates, Pratchler said. “Harvest should be done by the middle of September and we should have the data processed by January. Pratchler said the experiments aren’t at a stage where she can’t get recommendations to farmers. “Basically, at this stage it’s just to demonstrate how plant growth regulators are going to work in our normal production practices, she said, adding there was also an issue with minimum residual levels that could prevent export to the U.S. Plant growth regulators have been used in the United Kingdom over the last 30 years and they were used in the 1980s in Canada, but higher wheat prices and drawbacks like crop injury caused them to fall by the wayside. “Those products back in the 1980s also had very narrow application windows and so if the farmer applied it in the wrong timing, he had a severe yield consequence, Pratchler said, adding that there’s been dramatic improvement in the products since the 1980s.

Jessica Pratchler, a research agronomist with the Northeast Agriculture Research Foundation, stands beside a trial crop using plant growth regulators at the Melfort Research Farm. Review Photo by Devan C. Tasa Pratchler said even though her experiments aren’t finished, plant growth regulators are something that farmers should keep an eye on. “They should be on everybody’s radar and if you are willing to try them, try them and see how they fit into everybody’s basic production practices, she said.

Hemp fills gap in crop rotation BY TARYN RIEMER

There are a lot of farmers these days looking for another crop to add to their usual rotation. An option that more farmers in Saskatchewan, particularly in the Northeast, are examining is hemp. This crop has had a tough go over the years, being outlawed in Canada in 1937 and then brought back in 1998 when the plant’s levels of delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) were brought down low enough. Today there are several farmers growing the product in Saskatchewan, with an estimated 50,000 acres to be harvested in 2015. “The interest level is growing because farmers are always looking to expand their crop rotations and find something that fits into their environmental situation a little bit better,” said Dale Risula, provincial specialist for speciality crops in Saskatchewan. He added it can give a good economic return. In 2014 there were 40,000 acres of hemp grown in Saskatchewan. Risula said that although the crop is grown in several areas of the province, the crop is most prominent in the North and Northeast. Kris Mayerle, who farms around Tisdale, has been growing the crop since 2012. He said it started from looking for a new crop to add to his rotation. This year he is growing 1,200 acres, which one of his larger years. “I like to grow hemp on oats stub-

ble because oats is an easy crop to separate from hemp if you have volunteers,” said Mayerle. “So just kind of depending on what I had for acres available each year, but you know I’ve been down as low as 500 and as high as what I am this year, 1,200.” Mayerle said this year he has some new varieties of hemp that he is growing, along with some older ones. “I have two brand-new varieties that are their very first year out. In fact they’re only available right now to seed growers basically,” he said. Along with farming, Mayerle also owns and operates Greenleaf Seed Ltd., a pedigree seed and processing plant. Kim Stonehouse, regional crop specialist at the Tisdale office, said farmers can choose what part of the plant they want to harvest. “There are a couple of reasons that they would grow it. One would be for the fibre in it or more likely is for the seed because the seed can be used in cooking oils and that sort of thing, it can be used in cosmetics,” he said. In Saskatchewan the fibre market for hemp is quite low and Risula said the farmers in the province are growing hemp almost 100 per cent for the seed. Mayerle said there are some learning curves people need to go through when growing hemp. The first is getting the license with Health Canada, but he said it is relatively straight forward.
