who says they decided to add the event after a couple of members made the request.

“They stepped forward and volunteered to do the organizing and run it. We’re always very open to getting new things and enticing new volunteers into our activities.”

Newer activities, like the vintage tractor pull, are proving to be quite popular, says Cunningham, and that is meaning great success for the fair.

“Some of our newer events like the vintage tractor pull are proving to be quite popular. We’ve got some vendors that are new this year, beer garden is always popular, the ball tournaments are both full.

That hasn’t happened for a while.”

In addition, the fair has also made a huge attempt to entertain the children over the years as well, with kids events like the gymkhana, farm safety day, train rides, mini putt, and a bouncy castle among others, with Cunningham noting their number one suggestion every year is to bring in more kid friendly entertainment.

“We try very hard to find things that’s going to entertain them all. It’s hard because the midways of

the past are gone, things are expensive.”

The fair was bustling with people, which was great to see, says Cunningham, because it takes a lot of work to put the fair together, she says, noting that to know people think of it as an important event makes it worthwhile.

In addition to a number of committee members stepping up to help volunteer throughout the weekend a number of members of the community also leant a hand, which is crucial, says Cunningham.

“You could not put this activity on with paid personnel. It just wouldn’t work. So volunteers are the core of the whole idea, they’re there or nothing’s going to happen.”

In addition to the great support the fair receives from local volunteers, the fair also receives tremendous support from the local businesses as well, notes Cunningham.

“We have never had trouble getting sponsors, or donations and we really appreciate the generosity of the businesses within the community.”

Overall, Cunningham says the weekend was a great success.

It was a busy long weekend for residents in Kelvington as the Kelvington Agricultural Society hosted the 94th Annual Kelvington Fair, Aug. 4-6.

The fair featured a number of events including live entertainment, a tractor pull, chuck wagon races, chariot races, slo-pitch tournaments, and a craft show among many more.

Agricultural society Secretary/Treasurer Donna Cunningham notes that the fair is a way for the community to gather in one place, while sharing culture, and keeping the agricultural lifestyle alive, noting over the 94 years of the fair things have changed.

“In the beginning it would have been an agricultural show. They would have had beef, heavy horses, light horses, swine… all of those livestock shows except the light horse show are gone and it’s hobbies, entertainment like pony chuck wagons, quilting, the crafts in the exhibit hall have gained popularity and those old agricultural values have changed.”

The tractor pull is in its second year at the fair, and is proving to be quite popular, notes Cunningham,

Crop report for the period July 25 to 31, 2017 Harvest is underway for some producers in the south, according to Saskatchewan Agriculture’s Weekly Crop Report. Less than one per cent of the provincial crop has been combined, while slightly more than one per cent is ready to straight-cut.

Forty-seven per cent of fall rye, six per cent of winter wheat, two per cent of lentils and one per cent of field peas are now in the bin. Many pulse crops in southern and central areas are being desiccated. Reported yields

so far range from average to well below average, depending on field and moisture conditions.

Most of the province received little to no rain this past week, although the Glaslyn area reported 38 mm over the weekend. Many areas remain very dry and will need significant rain to fill crops and replenish topsoil moisture. For some producers in the south, crops are rapidly drying down and any rainfall now will come too late to be of benefit.

Topsoil moisture conditions have worsened with the lack of rain and high temperatures. Across the province, topsoil moisture on cropland is rated as one per cent surplus, 29 per cent adequate, 41 per cent short and 29 per cent very short. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as one per cent surplus, 23 per cent adequate, 40 per cent short and 36 per cent very short. In most of the south along the U.S. and Alberta borders, 100 per cent of cropland, hay land and pasture is short to very short topsoil moisture.

Crops are ripening quickly in many areas and most range from poor to good condition.

Crop damage this week is mainly attributed to hot temperatures, hail, localized flooding, strong winds and lack of rain. There are many reports of insects such as aphids, diamondback moths and grasshoppers.

Haying is wrapping up for many livestock producers and yields remain significantly lower than normal.

Pasture conditions are currently rated as one per cent excellent, 18 per cent good, 32 per cent fair, 31 per cent poor and 18 per cent very poor.

Producers are getting ready for harvest, scouting for pests and finishing haying operations.

Chicken and the egg for Sask acting community

I do not always get the chance but this year a group of us took the opportunity to visit Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan and their wonderful performance of Twelfth Night.

One thing that stood out for me as a Saskatchewan resident who covers the art community as much as I can is the overlap I saw.

I was excited to see Grahame Kent’s name in the program, who I just talked with in June about the Page to Stage Program through Dancing Sky Theatre (Humboldt Journal, June 14, 2017 and East Central Trader, June 16, 2017).

Joshua Beaudry had rolls in both Twelfth Night and Shakespeare of Saskatchewan’s other performance, Richard III. I had the pleasure of seeing him in Dogbarked at Dancing Sky Theatre in May and covering Dancing Sky’s 20th anniversary (East Central Trader, May 12, 2017).

Expanding beyond just these amazing Saskatchewan talents, I got to see Greg Ochitwa, who played Orsino in Twelfth Night, during his spectacular

performance as Hamlet during a previous season of Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan while plenty of other performers looked familiar from other performances I took in.

The best part of these performances is that everyone, from costume and set design to the actors, have major ties to Saskatchewan, either by being from here or studying their craft in Saskatchewan.

They are choosing to bring their craft and talent here. They are choosing to contribute to Saskatchewan’s art scene and Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan is just one way they can do that.

Kent’s work with Dancing Sky Theatre on the Page to Stage program was huge in promoting writing and theatre in schools.

Smoak a rare bright light for Jays

This has been a forgettable season for the Toronto Blue Jays but one bright light has emerged: Justin Smoak.

Pencilled in during the pre-season as a journeyman player among stars such as Josh Donaldson, Troy Tulowitzki and Jose Bautista on a team many believed had a chance to contend in the American League East, Smoak has emerged as the team’s undisputed most valuable player during a terrible season.

A 6-foot-4, 220-pound first baseman acquired following the 2014 season from the Seattle Mariners, Smoak has led the team in home runs and other slugging stats while earning all-star status for the first time in his career.

By the end of July, he was on pace for 44 home runs, a total which won’t make Jays’ fans forget the likes of Carlos Delgado, George Bell, Jesse Barfield or Bautista (who

holds the team record of 54 homers in a season), but a decent number just the same.

Upon arrival in Toronto, Smoak was given the chance to win the first base job, but lost it in 2015 to Chris Colabello and in 2016 to Edwin Encarnacion. But with both those players gone this spring, the job was Smoak’s, for better or worse.

He’s made it better, you bet!

Smoak started slowly, with four home runs in each of April and May, but then belted 10 out of the park in June to start raising eyebrows around Major League Baseball. His experience is starting to pay off. He’s a more controlled hitter. He doesn’t swing at as many bad pitches. His strikeouts are not as frequent. “I feel like I’m a little more relaxed right now at the plate,” Smoak told The Athletic. ”That’s always the key to having success.”

Smoak won’t get a chance this year to showcase his talents on a playoff stage, but his coming-out year has been a boon for the future of the Jays. With Bautista likely gone, and big question marks hanging over Donaldson and Tulowitzki, one of the solid pieces of the Blue Jays future is, for the foreseeable future, Smoak. May he blast many more ‘smoak bombs’ over stadium fences as the team rebuilds around

him and the team’s young pitching staff.

Hope for rare breed preservation in genetic banks

Calvin Daniels So last week I wrote about why preserving rare breeds is important.

And now a new technology has emerged to help do just that, preserve rare and important livestock genetics.

The new technology comes via Canadian Animal Genetic

Resources (CAGR), a joint initiative of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) and the University of Saskatchewan (U of S), to preserve the genetic diversity of Canadian livestock and poultry breeds, and to develop new techniques to conserve germplasm.

The three branches of CAGR include Genetic Diversity, Gamete and Embryo Biology, and Cryobiology.

Dr. Carl Lessard, with the U of S explained the program at present is focusing on preserving the sperm of dead or recently castrated farm animals.

“CAGR program has

developed a method to salvage sperm cells from epididymis (reproductive organ sitting on the testes) from dead or castrated animals,” said Lessard, lead researcher at CAGR in a release. “If the gonadal tissue is packed properly for shipping, sperm cells can show a good movement up to 48 hours following the castration or the death of the animal, meaning that we can preserve this viable material in our gene bank.”

If packed properly, sperm can be viable for up to 48 hours, which means that producers of heritage breed animals across the country

can preserve the genetic diversity of their heritage breed species by couriering scrotums to the CAGR facility in Saskatoon, he explained.

The great news about this technology is that it is working across the range of livestock.

In 2016, CAGR received scrotums from Guernsey and Lynch Lineback bulls, Shropshire and Nubian bucks, a Clydesdale stallion, and a Berkshire pig.

Plenty to do for healthy hobbies

A lot of our days are filled with work, chores, and sleep.

Not many of us actually take time everyday for ourselves.

I’ve talked in the past about the importance of “Me” time everyday to help your body unwind and relax.

When I asked people what they do for themselves, a lot struggle to answer. They don’t make the time for themselves

in the day to manage their stress.

Many people’s excuses are that they don’t have any hobbies, but I don’t believe that to be true.

The first thing that comes to mind when we think of hobbies is probably the same for most of us: knitting, sewing, building model airplanes and cars, woodworking, etc.

Traditional hobbies are great, but they aren’t for everyone. It’s about finding a hobby that you enjoy and can see yourself spending time doing.

With the convenience of online streaming and videoon-demand it is so easy to sit back and watch a movie or an episode or two, or ten, of your favourite series.

Watching TV can be relaxing, but unfortunately it isn’t the healthiest hobby. It’s very sedentary, unhealthy snacks are often involved and the lights from the screen affect

our melatonin and cortisol production.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m as guilty as the next person for a binge watch with a bag of chips, but I try to keep it to a minimum.

My latest craze has been geocaching. The first geocache was hidden in 2000 so I’m a little late to the party just starting it this month, but I’m hooked.

Little boxes are hidden around the world that you search for using GPS coordinates.

You walk around the area and search once you are within a few metres and can often easily walk between caches. They are often hidden along walking or hiking trails. It’s not an intense workout, but a hobby that gets your body moving.

I also purchased a kayak this spring which is another summer addiction. Living so close to numerous lakes means always a new adventure and body of water to explore.

Kayaking is a great upper body and core workout, but it is also very relaxing for the mind. Once you’re on the water you can just sit and float and meditate. Earlier this month, we sat on the lake in our kayaks calmly watching fish jump for an hour. One of my summer highlights thus far.

An easy way to unwind and get your body moving is to get outside in the summer months. Jump on your bike or skateboard and cruise around town. Or move with the aid of your own two feet for a walk.

Enjoy the beautiful wildlife trails we have in Humboldt or simply tour around town.

You don’t have to go far, but walking or biking can be great for your muscles and your mind.

Yes, it’s true that I tend to be fairly active and can often be found out and about, but I do have some more sedentary

hobbies.

Most evenings I can be found with my nose stuck in a book. Reading is an excellent way to calm your mind, escape from your current situation and go on any adventure you choose.

I also love reading on long car rides. Whenever I’m on a road trip, the passenger reads aloud to the driver and it makes the time fly by.

Remember to nourish yourself daily by finding hobbies and activities you enjoy.

Choosing active hobbies gets you moving at the same time.

Never forget to take care of yourself and find time for the things you enjoy.

Farming clinic great way to increase interest in farming

Last week I had the opportunity to attend Women in Ag Clinic, and what a great idea.

We should be doing whatever we can to be finding more farmers where ever we can, and what better place to start than with females?

According to a publication released by the Farm and Food Care Foundation less than three per cent of farms are operated solely by females, which to me is staggeringly low.

The numbers were not only low for females but for farmers in general.

Currently, the average age of a farmer is 54 years old, with 70 per cent of the

total Canadian farmers being male.

In addition, in the last 110 years we have seen a 91 per cent decrease in the number of farmers in Canada, with a 60 per cent decrease in the number of farms.

This is worrying as we have seen a 548 per cent increase in the population of our country over that span.

Where are we going to get our food from if we lose 91 per cent of our farmers but gain 548 per cent population?

Not only should the food be better for you but it should also taste better if it is grown by a local farmer.

Do not believe me?

Go to the store and buy a vegetable and eat it.

Then get the same vegetable from a

local farmer or from your own or your neighbour’s garden and eat that one.

From my own experience I can tell you which one I would prefer.

I hear a lot of people talk about the importance of shopping local and one of the most important local shopping you can do is buying your food local.

This provides jobs, and a living for a number of your community members, and provides healthy, good tasting food for you.

It is a win-win.

But how are we supposed to be able to buy local food if there are fewer farmers and more people?

Well that is where a clinic like the one I attended comes in.

Showcasing agriculture to people who generally are not considered farmers, or who statistically are not proving to be sole farmers on a farm is a good place to start recruiting potential new farmers.

And while I know most of the women who were in attendance for the clinic were already living and/or working on a farm if we can increase their knowledge and excitement about the prospects of farming in Saskatchewan, they might be able to pass that excitement onto other females.

We have a serious farming shortage in Canada, and in Saskatchewan as well, so doing anything we can to increase the knowledge, awareness, and excitement is important.

With the first week of the Canada Summer Games in Winnipeg now in the books, a number of local athletes have seen their events come to a close.

Muenster Red Sox The Muenster Red Sox quintet of Brody Frerichs, Logan Hofmann, Rylan Marianchuk, Jayden Huls, and Tyler McWillie, return home extremely happy after a long week of baseball as they claimed the Canada Summer Games gold medal with a 3-1 win over Manitoba in the final on Aug. 4.

Despite capturing the championship, Team Saskatchewan was anything but dominant in the early part

of the tournament as they dropped their first game 7-2 to Team Quebec, before rebounding for three straight wins knocking off Alberta 3-2, British Columbia 3-2, and Quebec 4-2.

With a shot at first place on the line, Team Saskatchewan faltered down the stretch losing their final two games of the round robin 6-2 against Alberta and 2-1 against B.C., leaving Saskatchewan with just a 3-3 record.

Despite playing .500 baseball through the round robin and giving up more runs, 21, than they scored, 15, Saskatchewan still earned the second seed in their group and a bye to the semi-finals.

It was in the semi-finals against

Ontario that Saskatchewan came alive as they romped their way to a 7-0 win.

McWillie was excellent in the contest as he finished 2-for-4 with two doubles, two runs batted in, and one run scored.

The win moved Saskatchewan into the final where they took on the undefeated hosts from Manitoba.

Hofmann got the start for Saskatchewan and was terrific pitching six innings of one run ball allowing just five hits, while striking out nine, including the first five batters of the game.

McWillie came on in relief of Hofmann, and picked up the save to seal the victory for Saskatchewan.

For the Red Sox quintet they now turn their attention back to their Red Sox season as they will return to Manitoba for the Western Canadian Championships Aug. 10-13.

Molly Yungmann It was a busy first week of action for St. Gregor athlete Molly Yungmann who competed in both the 400m hurdles, and a heptathlon.

Yungmann kicked off her Summer Games competition with the heats for the 400m hurdles on July 31, where she ran a 1:07.09, which was good enough for 12th place, and qualified her for the B final.

In her B final race on August 3,

Yungmann was unable to finish the race, resulting in a 16th place finish overall.

Earlier on that day Yungmann kicked off her heptathlon competition with the first four events.

The first event saw Yungmann compete in the 100m hurdles, where she picked up 781 points.

After picking up 544 points in the high jump, and 465 points in the shot put, Yungmann wrapped up her day with the 200m, where she collected 754 points to leave her with a day one total of 2,544 points.

Needing a big day two to climb up the leader board, Yungmann struggled as she posted 464 points in the long jump, 320 points on the javelin, and 548 points in the 800m, giving her a total of 3,876 points.

The day two scores saw Yungmann slide down the overall leaderboard, as she claimed 12th place overall, missing out on a top ten finish by just 199 points.

Looking, ahead to the rest of the Canada Summer Games only one local athlete will be competing in the final week of the games, as Wakaw native Travis Walls and his menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s volleyball team will be looking to bring home volleyball gold.

Watrous welcomes province for provincial finals

The Watrous Swimming Pool got a workout on the weekend as it played host to the 2017 Provincial Swimming Championships, Aug. 5-6.

The meet featured 218 swimmers from 16 different clubs from across the province and marked the end of the swimming season.

The meet also marked the first time Watrous has hosted the provincial final, with Meet Manager Andrea Richardson noting that it was not until they got their new pool that they were able to host.

The meet is alternated between clubs so while the pool has been in use for the last number of years, they needed to wait until it was their turn again, noted Richardson. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was a new experience for us, it was a great experience, it turned out really well. We had a fairly large committee help organize it and weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re very glad we got to host, it brought probably close to 500 people to town for us.â&#x20AC;?

Being able to host a provincial competition not only brings a number of people to Watrous from the rest of the province but it also exposes children from the community of Watrous to the sport of swimming, which is really important, says Richardson. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We would love to be able to grow our club and we have lots of the local kids here watching, seeing their friends do it. So Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m hoping that it encourages them to try swimming as well.â&#x20AC;?

With the event being hosted outdoors, due to Watrous having an outdoor pool, the weather needed to be cooperative over the course of the weekend, and it could not have been any more perfect, Richardson said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We had a little bit of rain when we were trying to set up but that was it and it turned out perfect for swimming.â&#x20AC;?

The provincial championships had three awards up for grabs, with Estevan walking away with the

Harry Bailey Trophy as the highest points earning team, Watrous walking away with the Betty Lou Dean Trophy as the highest points earning team among small clubs, and the South taking home the Halliday Cup as they outearned their northern counterparts.

Hosting a provincial swimming competition could not be done without a number of volunteers, notes Richardson, who said they received great support from the whole Swim Sask community, and even from members of the community who helped out despite their children having already graduated from the swimming program. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The long weekend was a bit of a challenge because people were away but we were really happy with how we were able to get volunteers to come help us out.â&#x20AC;?

In addition to locals stepping up to lend a hand by volunteering, local businesses also showed their support by donating raffle prizes, or serving as sponsors for the meet. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We appreciate our community like you wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t believe. Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been so supportive of us right from great big companies right down to the smallest businesses they all helped contribute and all of the sponsors were very generous with this. It was incredible to have their support.â&#x20AC;?

hosted over the course of the weekend as they also played host to the Summer AGM and the Provincial Banquet.

Richardson notes the banquet is an important part of provincial weekend because it allows the swimmers the chance to socialize with one another, and is where they present the medals from day one of the competition. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all about the swimmers for their entertainment and get everybody together and try to have a little camaraderie and present some medals.â&#x20AC;?

In total, 479 people made their way to the Watrous Curling Rink for the Aug. 5 banquet, which featured a magician doing table side magic.

Overall Richardson was very pleased with how the whole weekend went. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We had great referees and our committee did a really good job organizing everything and everything ran smoothly. We had a couple times we had to restart our starter but other than that we had no glitches at all.â&#x20AC;?

Obituaries MARTIN: Dennise (Denny) Leon Dec. 18, 1937 - July 24, 2017 Dennise (Denny) Martin passed away peacefully at St. Paulâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hospital in Saskatoon following a hard-fought battle with cancer. She was 79 years of age.

Denny is survived by her sister, Marlene (Lee) Lefebvre of Humboldt, and their children: Allen (Gail) Lefebvre, Deb (Lloyd) Stumborg, Judy (Barry) Jones, Elaine (Jerrod) Nickel and Wayne (Juliette) Lefebvre; brother, Keith (Hildegard) Martin of Saskatoon, their children: Tim Martin, JoAnn (Kent) Shaw, and Dale Martin; 18 great-nieces/nephews; and many good friends in the community. Dennise was predeceased by her parents Oswald and Mary (nee Regenwetter) Martin; nephew Barry Lefebvre; and great-nephew Stuart Lefebvre. Dennise was born in Watson, SK and grew up in Englefeld, SK where she attended both elementary and secondary school. Following her graduation in 1956 she immediately enrolled in the three year nursing program at St. Paulâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hospital in Saskatoon, starting her down a lifelong path of learning, nursing and teaching. Following her graduation in 1959 she began her career as a teacher at St. Paulâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s and St. Elizabethâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hospital in Humboldt. Following the subsequent completion of a Diploma in Teaching and Supervision and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1969 she began a long association with the Kelsey Institute (now Sask Polytech) in Saskatoon. She was initially a teacher and then program coordinator with the Nursing Assistant Program until the program was phased out in 1987, subsequently transferring to the Early Childhood Development Program and others until her retirement in 2002. While she was a single professional woman with a rewarding career before that was recognized as a norm, she did not solely identify herself with her career. Above all else family and friends were most important, and she was active in guiding and nurturing all those around her. Watching the 3rd and 4th generations of her extended family emerge gave her particular joy. From 1969 onward Saskatoon was her home, with summers spent at the cabin at Marean Lake. Quiet days would see her puttering in her yard, crocheting, doing petit point, needlepoint, and counted cross stitch, attending meetings for the community organizations she supported (such as Cheshire Homes and Soroptimists), driving Cancer Clinic patients around the city as a volunteer driver, attending the symphony or lunching with friends. A special place in her heart was reserved for the legacy of the nursing program at St. Paulâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s and in recent years she was active as the editor for the alumni newsletter and anniversary celebrations. She leaves behind an extended family and group of friends who have benefitted from her strong values: respect, dignity, commitment to family and a love for life, honesty, integrity, and service. A Funeral Mass was held on Saturday July 29th at St. Maryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Catholic Church, 211 Avenue O South, Saskatoon, SK, at 2:00 p.m., celebrated by Fr. Steve Morrisey, CSSR. Others taking part were: Wayne Lefebvre, crossbearer; Judy Jones and Deb Stumborg, scripture readers; Sr. Carol, intentions; Dale Martin and JoAnn Shaw, giftbearers; Marlene Smale, Marilyn MacDonald, and Alanna Danilkewich, memorial table attendants; Allen Lefebvre, eulogist. Music ministry was provided by organist, Theresa Chipeur and members of St. Maryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Parish Choir. An honor guard was formed by St. Paulâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hospital School of Nursing Alumni. Urnbearer was Tim Martin.

RAMLER: Mary Anne Sept 12, 1927 - July 28, 2017 Mary Anne (nee Brinkman) Ramler of Humboldt, SK, (and formerly of Annaheim, SK), passed away at Humboldt District Hospital on Friday, July 28, 2017. She was 89 years of age. Mary was born on September 12, 1927, to Henry and Anna (nee Meyer) Brinkman at home on their farm in the Lake Lenore district. She was raised there and attended Solo School, which was located on her parentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; land. On October 19, 1949, Mary married Urban Ramler in St. Anthonyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s R.C. Church at Lake Lenore. For the first three years following their marriage, they resided in a tworoom house in the Ramler farmyard and then moved to a farm they bought half a mile south of Annaheim. Together, they farmed and raised a family of six, four sons and two daughters.

In 1975, when the children were old enough, Mary enrolled in a secretarial course at Saskatoon Business College. She completed the course in the spring of 1976 and began working at the Annaheim Credit Union in May. Mary and Urban farmed until 1979. On February 19, 1999, Urban passed away. Eventually, Mary moved to Naicam where she lived for 12 years, and then to Humboldt, and was presently residing at Caleb Village. Of utmost importance to Mary throughout her life was her family and friends. A very caring person, she was active in guiding and nurturing all those around her. Mary had unconditional love for all her family, and that was also felt by anyone marrying into her family. She was always a hard-working, kind, dedicated and detailed lady. As well she was a very forward thinking person and will be missed by all whose lives were touched by her. Mary will be lovingly remembered by five children: Jack (Cheryl) Ramler of Naicam, SK; Ross (Lois) Ramler of Lloydminster, AB; Maryanne (Lionel) Dosch of Annaheim, SK; Susanne (Kevin) Painter of Lloydminster, AB; and Roy (Tammy) Ramler of Kelvington, SK; 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; one great-greatgrandchild; one sister, Lori (Des) Borstmayer of Humboldt, SK; in-laws: Veronica Brinkman of Middle Lake, SK; Irma Brinkman of Lake Lenore, SK; Bernie Sarauer of Humboldt, SK; Walter (Marcella) Sarauer of Humboldt, SK; Valerie (Richard) Sarauer of Humboldt, SK; and by numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Urban Ramler (February 19, 1999); son, Ted Ramler; two grandsons: Todd Dosch and Jeff Dosch; parents, Henry and Anna (nee Meyer) Brinkman; sisters: Irene (Jake) Stuckel, Melinda (Tony) Mamer, Bernilda (Henry) Schemenauer, and Ann (Ralph) Gaetz; brothers: Urban (Gen) Brinkman, Wilbert Brinkman, Henry Brinkman, and Teddy Brinkman; in-laws: Anton and Clara (nee Busch) Ramler, Rita Sarauer, Laura Sarauer, Mary Ramler (at birth), Virgil (Theresa) Ramler, Alvin (Lil) Ramler, and Raymond Ramler. The Prayer Service for Mary Anne was held at St. Augustine R.C. Church, Humboldt, on Thursday, August 3, 2017, at 7:30 p.m., presided

by Nestor Trach and organist Darlene Cash. Scripture readers were Lyle Dosch and Annie Ramler, intentions were led by Mike Painter and Ryan Ramler, and the eulogy was delivered by Mike Painter, Ryan Ramler, and Warren Ramler. The Funeral Mass was offered at St. Augustine R.C. Church on Friday, August 4, 2017, at 10:00 a.m., celebrated by Fr. Joseph Salihu. Others taking part were: Dalyn Jans, crossbearer; Jackie Jans and Carl Dosch, scripture readers; Michelle Ramler and Ryan Ramler, intentions; Carter Dosch and Kaitlyn Jans, giftbearers; Joan Carn and Judy Landell, memorial table attendants; Jack Ramler, urnbearer. Music ministry was provided by director Loretta Schugmann, organist Marie Aubin, and members of the St. Augustine Parish Funeral Choir. Honorary pallbearers were Maryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and her great-great-grandchild. Interment followed at St. Annâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Roman Catholic Cemetery, Annaheim. Memorial donations may be directed to either the Canadian Cancer Society or the St. Annâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Roman Catholic Cemetery Fund. Schuler-Lefebvre Funeral Chapel, Humboldt, SK.

Whitecaps wrap swimming season on home soil

The Watrous Swimming Pool was full of Whitecaps on the weekend as the Watrous Whitecaps Swim Club hosted the provincial championships, Aug. 5-6.

The Whitecaps had 17 swimmers entered into the championships where they competed against 218 swimmers from 16 clubs from across the province.

The meet saw the Whitecaps enjoy a tremendous amount of success as they picked up two aggregate points medals, and finished fourth overall in the team points competition.

Their 482 team points was good enough to allow the Whitecaps to claim the Betty Lou Dean Trophy as the small club with the most amount of points.

The Whitecapsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; two medals were both golds as Pearce Bartko and Zak Freeman both won gold medals in male competitions.

Bartko claimed the top spot in the 11-12 competition, as he racked up 63 points, to run away with the provincial championship as he finished seven points clear of the silver medalist.

Freeman meanwhile, won his gold medal in the 15-17 event, where he piled up 63 points, as well, to edge out the silver medalist by just one point.

Despite only coming home with two aggregate points medals, the Whitecaps enjoyed a number of excellent results in individual races as they came away with eight golds, five silvers, and four bronzes.

The Whitecaps also claimed a tremendous amount of medals in relay races, winning nine gold medals, four silver medals, and five bronze medals.

The end of provincials marks the end of the Whitecaps season, as they will be out of the pool until next summer.
