Carlton Trail celebrates students and donors
Carlton Trail College celebrated students and donors with their Awards Dinner on Dec. 6 with $44,000 worth of scholarships given out to 44 students. photo by Becky Zimmer By Becky Zimmer Journal Editor
Students from Carlton Trail College received a helping hand on Dec. 6 thanks to the Carlton Trail Awards Dinner. Over the course of the evening 44 students were presented with 46 scholarships worth $44,000. Current and former students enrolled in courses 12 weeks or longer were eligible to apply, says Marketing Facilitator, Val Koroluk. Awards were given out in four categories with five students taking home early application, 11 performance, two entrance awards, and 28 applicationbased with students eligible in multiple categories. Koroluk was happy with the increased number of student applying for the application based scholarships with
around 40 students applying. Through the application process, applicants basically fill in a mini-resume, says Koroluk, providing information on how they think they will be a good employee and other questions based on the student marketing themselves. Carlton Trail also took the opportunity to recognize donors, says Carlton Trail President and CEO Shelley Romanyszyn-Cross, since they are an important part of the support given to students. The awards night was also a great opportunity for the parties to meet one another with students having the chance to meet donors and donors meeting the students that they are supporting, says Romanyszyn-Cross. For some students, having this opportunity to meet donors could also
mean meeting potential employers and stepping outside their comfort zone, says Romanyszyn-Cross. Joshua Kovach, Facilities Operations Manager with Viterra, was just one of many donors who distributed scholarships during the evening. The impact that they can have on students across Saskatchewan is not lost on them, says Kovach, and they were very happy to lend a helping hand to students and, maybe one day, potential employees. “If we can help them financially get their careers started, hopefully we see them wearing the Viterra colours one day.” Attending classes can be a challenge for students with mounting costs of post-secondary education and cost of living having an impact on their school-
ing. Romanyszyn-Cross knows the positive impact that scholarships can have on students and the support that they get from community and regional partners is invaluable, she says. “It’s important that we help students find it a little easier to be successful in terms of their goals.” Students were excited to take part in the evening, says Koroluk with a big jump in the number of students and their family in attendance compared to the first awards dinner in 2016. The awards dinner does make the students feel special and enriches their experience at the college, she says. This was the sixth year Carlton Trail has distributed awards to their students with $163,400 given out since their first event in 2011.
Four Winds opens in Punnichy By Becky Zimmer Journal Editor
With much consultation and ceremony, the Carlton Trail College opened up their new Four Winds Learning Centre facility in Punnichy on Dec. 8. The event was well attended, said Carlton Trail College’s President and CEO, Shelley Romanyszyn-Cross in a press release, with an elder blessing, pipe ceremony, speeches, drum group, ribbon cutting, and tours all included in the
opening celebration. Local First Nations and representatives were consulted on the incorporation of indigenous culture into the new educational facility, said the press release, with elders, knowledge keepers, representatives from George Gordon, Kawacatoose, Day Star and Muskowekan First Nations, Touchwood Agency Tribal Council and the Village of Punnichy. “The group reached out to the surrounding communities
with a contest to name the centre and its classrooms...Cree and Saulteaux translations for the each of the names will be displayed at the centre,” said the press release. “The Four Winds represent the four seasons, the four directions, four colours of the medicine wheel, and the four surrounding First Nation communities. We are all brothers and sisters,” said Elders Irvin Buffalo and Joan Manitopyes. “Our goal for the centre was

to create a safe, welcoming, inclusive learning environment for all learners,” said Carlton Trail College’s President and CEO, Shelley RomanyszynCross. “We wanted the centre to respectfully and appropriately showcase the rich heritage and spiritual beliefs of the area, to promote community and cultural cohesiveness, and to promote and display local artistic talent.” The facility was bought in 2015 from the Village of Punnichy and was a church before
the redevelopment. Funding from the Saskatchewan Ministry of Advanced Education and the Federal Government’s Post-Secondary Institution Strategic Investment Fund provided $235,000 worth of funding for the development of the facility, which was completed in the fall of 2017. The new facility will, “serve the education, training and student services needs of adult students in Punnichy and surrounding area.”
Plunkett news By Deloris Sutherland Correspondent The curling from Eastern Canada was very interesting to watch on television. Recently visiting Gizella Toth in Watrous were her son David Toth of Kelvington and Margie and Dwayne Hrishuk of Regina and Tara and Chad of Saskatoon. It was a nice visit for Gizella’s birthday on Nov. 11. Halloween turned out to be quite a treat for Roger and Isabelle Langston of Watrous. The doorbell rang at about 9:00 p.m. and thinking it was more trick or treaters, it turned out to be their daughter Marilyn, and son-in-law Allan Gordey from Grand Prairie, Alta. They came to help their mom and dad celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary on Nov. 1. Ken Wilson of Saskatoon was home lately visiting his mom and Ken. He also sighted his gun in for hunting. Ken and I, Marge Haynes of Lanigan,
and Stan and Irene Giddings attended the Scott Woods fiddle entertainment in Humboldt at the legion and really enjoyed it. The legion was full of folks who too in the show on Nov. 16. Elvina Pray was also with us and also enjoyed it. The four ladies who went cruising have returned home and really enjoyed it. Ken and I were in Lloydminster on the weekend to attend the baptism of two great-grandchildren. We also visited Vern Mattson who was also there. Sunday we visited Linda and Trevor and stayed overnight in Saskatoon. It sure is nice seeing the little grandchildren. My how active they can be. I would love to borrow some of their energy. Pantos return to Dancing Sky for Christmas 2017 By Becky Zimmer Journal Editor
It has become a much loved part of Dancing Sky Theatre. And not only is the Prairie Panto returning for another Christmas season at the Meacham based theatre company, but the crew has also planned the return of the first Prairie Panto ever to grace the Dancing Sky stage. Farmer Joe and the Money Tree first came to Dancing Sky back in 2004 which included writer and actor, James O’Shea. O’Shea made his return for the 2017 performances, which ran from Dec. 1-17, which sees a Jack and the Beanstalk style Christmas story come to the stage. Instead of magic beans, Jack trades some quarters of land for a dollar so now he and his mother are not just broke but super broke, says O’Shea. “Jack makes this wish on a series of events and plants the dollar in the ground and the dollar turns into a money tree and his whole community is rich suddenly.” After his wish comes true and comedy ensues, this is also a comment on Western values, says O’Shea, since no one knows what to do with money but they have lots of it. Pantos are a traditional play performed in Great Britain where the audience gets to cheer, boo, sing, and generally take part in the production. O’Shea, as well as Dancing Sky Theatre Director, Angus Ferguson, spent time in parts of Great Britain and decided to bring the Panto over to Saskatchewan. While it needed some explanation at first it does not need any explanation now with people coming to enjoy the Panto, says O’Shea. Throughout history there is a tradition of celebrating the long and cold nights with mid-winter festivals and plays. This is Dancing Sky’s way of of celebrating that, says O’Shea.
The Dancing Sky Theatre Prairie Panto is back for another Christmas show with the return of their 2004 Panto, Farmer Joe and the Money Tree running Dec. 1-17. Pictured (L to R) Back: Crispi Lord, James O’Shea, Kent Allen. Front: Caitlin Vancoughnett, Angus Ferguson, Emma Thorpe photo courtesy of Britainy Zapshalla “That’s the Panto tradition it comes out of. Just that mid-winter blah, let’s do something crazy to celebrate.” Back in 2004, the script was written and performed in two and a half weeks for each process and about seven people collectively working on the script. Bringing the performance back to the Dancing Sky stage was a chance to make some small changes that made the story better, says O’Shea. “When we re-read the script this
time, it really had signs on it that it was written in great haste,” laughs O’Shea, with some of the jokes not being exactly what they wanted them to be. “We often didn’t have time to go back and put in a better joke so now we have that chance.” While the revisiting process is fun, it is a relief to not have to start from scratch, says O’Shea, since they already have a jumping off point as well as a sense of what works within the play.
There is not the sense of terror, he says, since the writers are not wondering what is going to work and what will not. The return of the Prairie Panto was part of Dancing Sky’s 20th birthday, which they celebrated this year with the return of Dogbarked in May as well as the first Prairie Panto. The celebration will continue into 2018 with their next performance seeing the return of Life After Hockey, an early Dancing Sky production done originally in 1998.
Give more during the Christmas season By Becky Zimmer Journal Editor
Some members of local non-profits wanted to spread the message of Giving Tuesday this year, promoting the idea of giving back in order to counteract all the commercialism of Black Friday and Cyber Monday the Tuesday after the rigmarole. As someone who enjoys volunteering and giving back to the community, I propose that this is something we need more of in today’s world. Giving back does more than just make someone feel good, there are also wide reaching benefits for the community as well. When we do something good we inspire others to do something good as well. Especially when it comes to young people, they need positive role models in their lives and something like volunteering can inspire them to look for their own opportunities to give back. While chipping in during a busy season this could be the spark that starts a young person on their own future as a lifelong volunteer. There are always ways to give back to the community, and non-profit organizations look for volunteers and donations all through the year. Since we think about volunteering, donations, and getting involved in the community during the Christmas season, are there ways to give more than presents this year? Buying local is a one way we can give back with our gift giving by supporting local small business as well as supporting the community by supporting business owners. There is something to be said for buying local, especially when some small businesses have locally made items in stock. Gifting a donation to a local non-profit in someone else’s name can also be a good way to support local organizations while also letting someone know that you are thinking about them by supporting their favourite charity. Helping out around the holidays does not mean
grand gestures or hours of work. When it comes to Christmas season activities, we can always volunteer as a way of staying active in the community. Christmas is a crazy time where we have a combination of people and non-profits both working on holiday projects to make the season bright. All of this takes person-power so taking the time to help out anywhere that needs it can be important for a projects success. Small ways of giving back can have big impacts, such as taking a lonely neighbour for coffee or shovelling a sidewalk for someone who you know
has mobility trouble. Something simple can go a long way in brightening someone’s day as well as teaching young people a valuable lesson about how giving back can be such a simple thing. We can all use a little more joy in our lives and what better way than making someone else’s Christmas a little brighter? However, the best possible way we can keep the spirit of Christmas alive is to keep the season of giving going throughout the year. Late winter and early spring are times when donations to non-profits slip, so let us think about giving during those tough times too.

Votto, McMorris: Year-end tips of the cap
By Bruce Penton Sports Columnist
Canada’s sports editors and broadcasters will soon pick our country’s athletes of the year for 2017 and it’s anybody’s guess who will top the men’s and women’s polls. For a variety of reasons in 2017, a number of athletes stood out in my mind: Lifetime achievement award — Joey Votto, who grew up in Toronto and now plies his trade at first base and in the batter’s box for the Cincinnati Reds. Votto, an 11-year veteran, had another spectacular offensive year but he operates under the radar because he’s with a mediocre team that hasn’t been in the World Series since 1990. All he did
in 2017 was lead the National League in on-base percentage and OPS (on-base percentage plus slugging, a key stat) and walks. His total of 134 free passes was 25 more than the runner-up, Matt Carpenter, and they were the only two players with more than 100 walks. Oh, and Votto also hit 36 home runs and batted .320. His career stats (.313 average, 257 homers and an OPS of .959 are clearly Hall-of-Fame numbers. He should go down in Canada’s baseball history as the best position player ever. Comeback of the year award — Mark McMorris of Regina. The young snowboarder, among the world’s absolute best at his sport, nearly killed himself, literally, last March near Whistler. He crashed in a back-country accident and — take a deep breath — suffered a fractured jaw, fractured left arm, ruptured spleen, stable pelvic fracture, rib fractures and a collapsed left lung. Miraculously, he returned to action in late summer in Australia and plans to compete in the Olympics in February. What a story! “To be honest I was pretty sure I was going to die,” McMorris posted after his horrific crash. Bobsleigh’s best — Kallie
Humphries of Calgary is the best female bobsleigh racer in the world, winning gold medals in the past two Olympics and earning five medals in her last seven World Cup races. After winning gold in November at the 2017 World Cup in Lake Placid with partner Melissa Lotholz, she’ll be gunning for three Olympic golds in a row in February. No fluke — Brooke Henderson of Smiths Falls, Ont., made a big splash in 2016 on the Ladies Professional Golfers’ Association tour, winning twice, including a major, as a 19-year-old. In 2017, she proved her rookie year was no fluke, winning twice more and finishing the season 13th in the world ranking (third behind Lexi Thompson and Cristie Kerr among North Americans). At 20, it’s safe to say she has many good years ahead of her. Other major newsmakers in 2017: Hotshot tennis breakout star Denis Shapovalov and the best player in the NHL, Connor McDavid, who won his first scoring title and was voted league MVP. • Scott Ostler of the San Francisco Chronicle: “If you buy the fairy tale that the A’s are currently building a team
that will come to glorious maturity when its new ballpark opens, don’t forget to leave cookies for Santa.” • Brad Dickson of the Omaha World-Herald: “After taking a skate to the face New York Ranger Jimmy Vesey played most of a game with two teeth embedded in his lower lip. Suddenly the MLB player who left the game with a hangnail seems even wimpier.” • Greg Cote of the Miami Herald: “Will the Dolphins win another Super Bowl in my lifetime?” You used to hear that at local old folks’ homes. Now you hear it in middleschool cafeterias.” • Ostler again: “The Giants apparently didn’t even kick the tires on A’s discard Ryon Healy. If they show up at spring training with neither Giancarlo Stanton nor Shohei Ohtani, the Giants needn’t bother oiling their turnstiles.” • Dickson again: “A black lab named Charlie dropped the puck before an IslandersHurricanes NHL game. Let’s just hope that ‘dropped the puck’ is not a euphemism.” • Jimmy Fallon of NBC’s The Tonight Show: “The Giants announced that they are benching Eli Manning. Eli’s
not sure what’s worse – not getting to play for the Giants, or having to WATCH the Giants.” • Late Night’s Seth Meyers on NBC: “President Trump tweeted this morning that NFL stadiums are having a very hard time filling up due to recent national anthem protests. ‘Yes, that’s why,’ said the Cleveland Browns.” • RJ Currie of sportsdeke. com: “Bills’ QB Nathan Peterman said his terrible NFL debut won’t bother him because he trusts in the highest authority. ‘Leave me out of it,’ said Roger Goodell.” • Scott Ostler again, on the 49ers’ futile attempts to sack Seahawks QB Russell Wilson: “Trying to capture a butterfly with a soup spoon.” • Janice Hough of Leftcoastsportsbabe.com, on Fox’s NASCAR ratings dipping 17 per cent this year: “I’m sure it’s all those black drivers kneeling for the national anthem.” • Another one from Currie, after Michael and Jasmine Snell bowled 300 games on the same night in Omaha, Neb.: “Can’t say if their marriage is solid, but there were no signs of a split.” Care to comment? Local research important part of growing high yields
Calvin Daniels When it comes to achieving reasonable profit levels on the farm many factors play a role. A number of those factors are largely beyond the control of the producer. They cannot
control the weather, and while they can do things to mitigate the impact or prices, they are not able to greatly impact what they got for what they produce. So focusing on production is rather critical in terms of potential profits, and the flipside of that are potential losses. Profitability is not as simple as growing more bushels. It does come down to knowing what each bushel costs to produce. The dollars generated needs to be in excess of the costs associated with production.
But it also means producers need to be keenly aware of what they need to invest in in terms of production which will generate the most additional bushels at the lowest cost. That is where following good research is critical. Producers can’t afford to do on-farm experimentation with every new crop, new variety, seeding options, fertilizer rates, seed inoculants and when to spray for weeds and bugs and when not too. The options are frankly immense, and the cost

of trying each option is far in excess of what individual producers can effectively do. That all said it is important when looking into research done by others, government agencies, corporations, universities, etc, that the data relate as closely as possible to a producer’s own farm. While neighbouring farms will have similarities, the farther away the research is carried out, the less relevance it may have to a farmer. Soils types, growing days, weather conditions, and similar fac-
tors are not the same in Swift Current as they are in Indian Head, and both of those will be different from farms in the Melfort area. So good local research is important in farming, and that is where an organization such as the East Central Research Foundation centred in east central Saskatchewan can be a huge asset. The Foundation has recently posted new videos, (at www.ecrf. ca ), on research into such varied areas as nitrogen use in canola, seeding dates for winter

wheat, and inoculations in soybeans. The key to such research, at least in terms of area producers, is that the numbers were generated locally, which means they should translate most directly to farms in the area the research was carried out. It is information such as that contained in the reports which local producers can use to best tailor their approach to production to achieve production levels which equate to profits at the end of the day.

Melfort conference develops 4-H leaders
4-H members from all over Northern Saskatchewan came to the northern Leaderama conference in Melfort on Dec. 2 to learn new ways to improve their leadership skills. photo by Devan C. Tasa By Devan C. Tasa For the Humboldt Journal
Leadership in 4-H is something that can be learned from doing – but getting tips to improve doesn’t hurt. Melfort was the site of Saskatchewan 4-H’s northern Leaderama conference Dec. 2. This was the first time 4-H has held two of the conferences; before, they had one big one in Saskatoon. The southern one was in Moose Jaw. “This is an event to help advance the leadership of our clubs, give leaders the tools that they need to run their clubs, manage some conflict if it arises, and it’s a good opportunity for leaders to connect with other leaders to get ideas of things to bring back to their own club,” said Autumn Lawson, a 4-H board member. There were also sessions on developing unique and interesting projects, making meetings fun and succession planning. “It’s a good thing for everyone to take a step back during this day just to look at their leadership skills and how they can improve them,” Lawson said. “I know even at our table we were talking about what other clubs do for conflict management and it gives fresh ideas to bring back to the club to make better decisions and just have better leadership as a whole.”
The keynote speakers were Guenette Bautz, the Canadian Young Farmers’ Forum’s general manager, and Carla Borsa, the Saskatchewan Young Ag Entrepreneurs’ general manager. “My message to the participants is about taking your leadership strengths, taking your skills and becoming a leader – and that we all have leadership traits with us,” Bautz said. “We can all be leaders when we’re contributing to a greater cause.” Bautz said conferences are important to develop leaders. “It gives you the opportunity to grow and advance, identify your own skillset. It gives you the confidence to go out and do more work in the ag industry using the skills you’ve gained,” she said. “It also builds your network and your contact base so that you can continue to do your work in a broader capacity.” The Canadian Young Farmers’ Forum representative also wanted to let the 4-H participants know that there’s a need for leaders within the agriculture industry and that there’s plenty of room for them to use their skills when they are finished with 4-H. “If you’re passionate and you offer your leadership traits, you can have a bigger part in advancing the ag industry and a greater impact than you may be aware you’re having.”

St. Peter’s Chorus wraps up 50 years at Advent concert By Becky Zimmer Journal Editor
Maxine Moore leads the St. Peter’s Chorus in Silent Night during their 50th annual Advent celebration concert at St. Augustine Church on Dec. 10. The group also performed in Drake on Dec. 8. photo by Becky Zimmer
The St. Peter’s Chorus have put a tidy little bow on their 50th year with their 2017 Advent Celebrations. The Chorus sang their mix of traditional and modern Christmas tunes with performances in Drake on Dec. 8 and St. Augustine Church in Humboldt on Dec. 10. Proceeds from the Drake concert went to the Lanigan and District Food Bank. Chorus Director, Maxine Moore, says both shows were very well received with wonderful audiences in both locations. While she did not have an exact count, Moore says the crowd in Humboldt was well over 250, which she is very happy with. With the chorus being on par and the instrumental accompaniment by Michele and Kevin Ackerman and Dale Avison being a great addition to the show, Moore says she was also very happy with the performance itself. It is a process picking the
songs that the chorus will be performing, says Moore, but a surprise encore song capped off the performance nicely with everyone leaving with a big smile, she says. While Deck the Halls did not fit in with the Advent story, says Moore, it was still a fun piece to include with Fa La La additions of 1812 Overture, Danube Waltz, Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, and William Tell Overture thrown in. Moore appreciates everyone coming out to enjoy the show and her choir for all their hard work including driving from the area to get to rehearsals and performances. “It’s wonderful to share the music and to have everyone with us. By definition and throughout the chorus’s history they will always be a community choir, says Moore. This means that everyone is invited to be a part of it. “It’s a community choir so that is exactly what it is is a sense of community.
Abba tribute show raises money for Multiplex By Christopher Lee Journal Reporter
The stylings of Abba could be heard throughout the community of Middle Lake on Dec. 8. The Abra Cadabra show featured a tribute show to Swedish pop band Abba and was the Kickoff to Christmas for Middle Lake. Having Abra Cadabra come to Middle Lake was an easy decision, says organizing committee member Marie Bautz, who notes there was a lot of interest in Abba. “It’s such nostalgic music. It brings back a lot of memories for people, added band member Jeanette O’Keeffe. The show was a fundraiser for the Middle Lake Multiplex, with more than 200 people in attendance from all over the area including Lake Lenore, Melfort, Bruno, and Humboldt, among others. Seeing so many people come out for the first fundraiser of its kind was great says Bautz. “We didn’t think we’d have so many people because of all the Christmas parties and everything going on. While it was great to see so many people attend their show, O’Keeffe notes she is not overly surprised, even though a large majority of the area is not of Swedish decent. “Abba was so popular in Germany. They actually were real popular all through Europe. The show featured the hits from Abba including
Merry Christmas
Take a Chance on Me, Dancing Queen, and Mamma Mia among others, and also featured tributes to both Billy Joel and Elton John as well. Bautz notes the show was held as a way to raise money for the multiplex, but said it was also a great opportunity to host something different, noting the holiday season was perfect because businesses could also host their Christmas party that evening as well. “We’re very thankful for that because it means a lot to us that they can come and enjoy the evening. While total amount raised was not known, Bautz says it was a good turnout and people seemed to enjoy themselves, and said the money raised will be put to good use at the multiplex. “We’ve got a lot of things that we’re going to purchase. We’ve got extra tables we need to get, we’ve got a lot of extra chairs, we’ve got weddings coming up that are Jeanette O’Keeffe and Marlie Collins peformed Take a getting to be bigger all the time so we’ve got to purchase more equipment so we can Chance on Me during the Kickoff to Christmas event in provide more stuff for the functions that are Middle Lake on Dec. 8. photo by Christopher Lee coming up in the future. The show was Abra Cadabra’s first time in Middle Lake, including for former Saskatoon Bautz notes they are still in the feeling out process resident Marlie Collins, who admitted it was cool to for how the evening went, and said they will decide come to Middle Lake, noting that until the trip she whether to host another show next Christmas in the coming months. had never heard of it before. “We’ve only got a small organizing committee so While the show seemed to go over quite well, we just get together and we’ll decide how this goes this year and then we’ll see what next year brings. We might change things or we might just keep on the same track of what we’re doing this year.

Obituaries CROWTER: Audrey Elizabeth Jun. 7, 1931 - Nov. 29, 2017 It is with great sadness that the family of Audrey Elizabeth (nee Uhrich) Crowter of Humboldt, SK, (and formerly of LeRoy, SK), announces her passing on Wednesday, November 29, 2017, at St. Mary’s Villa, Humboldt. She was 86 years of age. Audrey was born on June 7, 1931, to Carl and Anna (nee Rode) Uhrich on a farm six miles south of LeRoy. They later moved to the Burr district. She spoke fondly of childhood days on the farm where she, along with her sister Christina and her brother Elmer, played and helped with chores. Audrey attended school at Attica where she completed Grade 6. At that time, because many male teachers were enlisting in the war effort, female teachers with families were being persuaded to return to the classroom. Audrey was asked to work for a teacher as a live-in babysitter and receive home schooling in the evening. She did that for two years with Mrs. Casey and Mrs. McConnell. At that time, she was ready to return home - but not for long. Audrey’s next adventure took her to Ontario. She arrived on her 16th birthday and went to work as a babysitter for her aunt, Martha Kruger, during the tomato harvest at Niagaraon-the-Lake. Once harvest was over, she found a job in a factory at St. Catharines. Audrey was proud of her skill and dexterity in her work. However, she had to learn to slow down or the other workers would be mad as they were forced to up their quotas. Here she met and became fast friends with Helen Busch. After Audrey returned to Saskatchewan the following year, their friendship was maintained by decades-long correspondence. Audrey always regretted not being able to return to visit her friend. Life continued and she soon found a job as a nurse’s aide in LeRoy. It was there she met and fell in love with Archie Crowter. They were wed on February 20, 1950. Being a typical Saskatchewan winter day, their union was blessed with the tipping of the caboose. Fortunately, no one was harmed and the caboose was quickly righted and they were on their way. Audrey and Archie soon started their family. As Mom would tell the story, Dad was ready to quit at one child - not sure what that says about Bill - but Audrey wanted more and more they had. She was quite proud of her even numbers - first two boys, then two girls. Mom settled into life as a homemaker - raising kids, growing a huge garden, and cooking wonderful meals that her children would continue to return for after they left home. Over the years, Audrey enjoyed curling, judging skate competitions, and the fellowship of the LeRoy Lutheran Ladies. She especially loved spending time with the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. When Archie retired, they took up bowling and socializing with friends at the LeRoy Cafe. During their life together, the two of them also enjoyed dancing at various events, an activity Audrey continued on her own with the Humboldt Minus One Club. When that club folded, Audrey and a group of friends started the Watson Minus One Club. Audrey served as president and organizer for 10 years. It was at Minus One that Audrey met Ward Mattson and they became friends and dancing partners. Audrey decided to move in with her daughter, Karen, at Humboldt. Eventually, a third member was added to their household - Tom the Cat. Guess which one was the favored roommate? She enjoyed Caribbean cruises with family as well as trips to Niagara Falls, Jamaica, Bahamas, Hawaii, and Salt Spring Island, BC. For most of her life, Audrey was blessed with good health and a strong constitution. In the past few years, she met the challenges of osteoporosis and beat lung cancer, but her last battle proved to be too much. Her family is comforted in the knowledge that her struggles are over and she is dancing in heaven with Archie. Audrey is survived by her son BILL (Darlene) Crowter and family - Cole, Tori (Blair), Tori’s son Liam, Blair’s daughter Tayte, and Ula (Jeremy) and their children Landon, Samuel, Zachariah, Alex, Brooke, Chris, and Xavier; son KEN Crowter and family - Jason, Trayton (Dinah), Trayton’s son Damian, Dinah’s sons Ashton and Bennett, and Michael (Sophie) and their children William and Luke; daughter COLLEEN (Keith) Wickenhauser and family - Christopher (Kathleen) and Kory (Jocelyn) and their daughter Brielle; and daughter KAREN Crowter; a special friend Ward Mattson; brother-in-law Hector Fraser; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Audrey was predeceased by her husband Archie Crowter; daughter-in-law Valerie Crowter; parents Carl and Anna (nee Rode) Uhrich; brother Elmer Uhrich; sister Christina (Reg) Murray; brother-in-law Gus Johnson; and Archie’s sisters, Minnie (Vern) Petch, Mary (Bruno) Dupont, Edith (Robert Davis) (Alois) Richels, Grace (Jerome) Wickenhauser, and Florence Fraser. The Funeral Service was held at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Humboldt, on Monday, December 4, 2017, at 11:00 a.m., officiated by Rev. Clint Magnus. Scripture readers were were Darlene Crowter and Ula Crowter Gates. Music ministry was provided by organist Dulcie Kirzinger. Pallbearers were Tori Crowter, Landon Crowter, Trayton Crowter, Michael Crowter, Christopher Wickenhauser and Kory Wickenhauser. Following the lunch in the Church basement, interment took place at LeRoy Public Cemetery, LeRoy. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to either St. John’s Lutheran Church or St. Mary’s Villa Foundation. Schuler-Lefebvre Funeral Chapel, Humboldt, SK.

Stewart Portaves of Tindahan ng Masa Filipino Market not only spoke with Tina Beaudry-Mellor as she came through Humboldt on Dec. 11 but also recorded their talk for Facebook Live. Portaves was president of the Filipino Canadian Association of Humboldt for two years so he was happy to speak to Beaudry-Mellor about issues around immigration as well as local Humboldt issues.

The campaign trail continues to press on during the Saskatchewan Party Leadership race and Tina Beaudry-Mellor says she has put over 25,000 km on her vehicle as she tours Saskatchewan. Compared to other candidates, she says she is doing things a little different and instead of renting out hotel meeting rooms, she is getting down to the grassroots. “I’ve really relied on social media tools, small group one-on-one relationships with people that domino. That’s really how we’ve done this.” This change of thinking has been deliberate in many aspects of the leadership race, says BeaudryMellor, from how she is approaching the campaign all the way to endorsements. Coming into the race, her focus was and has been to improve the process itself, she says, and whether that will get her elected, she will have to see. “Even when we’ve talked about endorsements, we’ve talked about that person. It really is about the citizens of Saskatchewan. That’s been something different too.” While Beaudry-Mellor has heard plenty of concerns from Saskatchewan people, the most challenging is going to be water management issues going forward. “All of the other issues that have been raised have what I think are readily available solutions. The water one doesn’t. The water one is very complex, multidimensional, and different individuals have different views on how it’ll be resolved.” While this is not the only issue going forward, this is going to be the most challenging for the next leader and the one she hears the most as she travels across Saskatchewan. Another issue that will have to be addressed as the party moves forward is education. While the Saskatchewan Government does not have the best relationship with teachers, BeaudryMellor applauds the work of the Saskatchewan Teachers Federation and the Saskatchewan School Board Association because they extended their hand to the
leadership candidates in order to have that discussion. “They’ve really tried to create the space to mend that relationship. Door knocking in my constituency, if a teacher opens the door, they’ll inevitably slam the door in my face.” While those discussions that the Federation and Association have started are important, there is still more work to be done. Before stepping down from the cabinet to run for the leadership, Beaudry-Mellor was Minister of Social Services. She has seen the trend of social services needs going up. As a province, we need to get ahead of that curve, she says, especially in the north where they are facing many economic challenges. “We need to pay attention to what’s going on up there and I do believe that economic opportunity is the way for people to get out of poverty and it will help address some of the other things that people are facing.” Beaudry-Mellor’s stop did include lunch with Schulte Industries in Englefeld and City of Humboldt Mayor Rob Muench. Muench says this was his opportunity to speak with Beaudry-Mellor about Humboldt area issues that he has brought up with other candidates. This includes STC, water management issues north of Humboldt, and how that has impacted development, as well as grants-in-lieu and the difficulties of last budget season with making up for those shortfalls. Muench says Beaudry-Mellor did agree on many points and it was a productive discussion. Looking ahead to what will happen after votes are counted and the leader announced, Beaudry-Mellor says that unity is going to be a big issue going forward. While only one person will be chosen as leader, the information shared to all the candidates will come to shape policy later on, says Beaudry-Mellor. “They’ve taken the pulse of the province and some of the things they’ve heard and they’ll put forward are actually going to get addressed.”

Toronto’s sports image is changing with latest titles By Christopher Lee Journal Reporter
I cannot believe I am writing this but Toronto is quickly becoming a championship sports city. Yes, that’s right. The city where you could always count on the teams either being bad or finding a way to lose has suddenly figured out how to win. Over the weekend the city of Toronto got their second championship title in three weeks when Toronto FC beat Seattle in the Major League Soccer final. And it’s not like it was a fluke either. TFC as they’re affectionately called, finished the season as the best team in the MLS, and are arguably one of the greatest MLS teams of all time. Of course the title came one year after a crushing loss to the Sounders in the MLS Cup final, with the club figuring to be every bit as strong again next year when they aim for their third straight MLS Cup final appearance. Of course the victory parade by TFC came before the confetti could even finish being cleaned up from the Toronto Argonauts’ Grey Cup parade. The Argonauts, completed an incredible turn-
around from last-to-first, capping it off by beating the mighty Calgary Stampeders in the final. While it is nearly impossible to tell from one season to the next in the Canadian Football League how teams will do, it seems like Toronto has every reason to believe they can be right back there again next season. And then of course there are the Leafs. The team everyone loves to hate. The team that epitomizes what being a Toronto sports franchise is all about. Maybe I should say epitomized. Because this Leafs team is good. There is still plenty of season left for them to revert into the Leafs of old but this team does not have the feel of a team that’s going to blow it. I expect they will be around come playoff time. Will they win? Not likely this year but they have as bright a future as anyone. Then there are the Raptors. Another solid Toronto sports franchise. Are they going to win? Well no, not with LeBron James ruling the east and the Golden State Warriors ruling the west, but this team is no joke.
The last few seasons they have consistently been a top team in the Eastern Conference, and even made an appearance in the final four in 2016. They should be great again this season, but I doubt we will see a championship. Finally, the team I believe least likely to win a title. The Toronto Blue Jays. It is amazing to think this team is considered Toronto’s worst, yet they are just 14 months removed from back-to-back appearances in the final four. But a year of no playoffs will do that to you, especially when teams in your division are getting better everyday it seems. How they do will be interesting. They say they can compete this year, I’m not so sure. Regardless of how they do, the city of Toronto is still a two-time champion in 2017 and figure to have many more chances in 2018. Enjoy it Toronto, it has been a long time coming. And unless you have finally shaken that perpetual loser tag you used to carry, it could be a long time before it happens again.
