Governor General to visit Humboldt Devan C. Tasa Editor The Governor General will be stopping in Humboldt to present commendations to the city’s citizens and first responders in connection to the Broncos crash.

For Julie Payette, the Humboldt stop on Oct. 20 will be part of her first official visit as Canada’s head of state to Saskatchewan.

While she’s here, the Governor General will also visit the Broncos Memorial Exhibit at the Humboldt and District Museum, and attend a Broncos game.

“I was very touched, like every Canadian, by the terrible accident at the time it happened,” she said. “At the time of the tragedy, we had discussions and the prime minister went to the memorial and it was sort of decided that I would later to go do honours.”

The Governor General said she wanted to do both but felt there was a fine line to deal with.

The former astronaut said she knows how difficult it can be because lived it firsthand after the space shuttle Columbia failed to return to Earth on Feb. 1, 2003.

“Aboard that space shuttle that did not come home, there was one of my closest friends and her name was Laurel. Laurel Blair Salton Clark was her full name. However, I was five months pregnant at the time of the tragedy and my son was named after her.”

Her son’s name is Laurier, the French word for the laurel plant.

“I know what it’s like to lose people that are dear to us in terrible circumstances

which have played out in the public,” Payette said.

“How do you cope with that loss, injustice of it all and with the grief? I hope I have a chance to talk about this with the people in the community.”

The two commendations the Governor General is giving for outstanding service will be presented at a ceremony.

“The fact that we’re presenting commendations, it really means that we recognize that the community has been so inspirational, so strong and so courageous in the face of adversity,” Payette said.

“It’s a way to say all Canadians were behind you.”

Payette has never been to Humboldt before, but she did take her pilot training at the Canadian Forces base near Moose Jaw. One of the reasons she’s coming to the province this time of year is to take in the Snowbirds’ year-end performance.

The Governor General said she’d like to meet local residents during her visit to Humboldt.

Man charged in connection to thefts in RM of St. Peter Staff A 28-year-old Annaheim man has been charged in connection to a stolen vehicle out of Raymore and thefts in the RM of St. Peter.

Humboldt RCMP received a fuel theft complaint from a farmyard in the RM of St. Peter Oct. 10, followed by several additional complaints of thefts as well as break and enters in the surrounding area over the next 24 hours.

mately 10:30 am. A vehicle that RCMP believed was connected to the thefts was stopped. As the officer approached the truck, the driver fled the scene. The officer was not injured.

RCMP did not pursue the vehicle for public safety reasons.

Targeted patrols were conducted in Humboldt and the surrounding area.

The suspect vehicle was located abandoned in a wooded area in south Humboldt. The truck was confirmed to be stolen out of Raymore.

He will face one charge of possession of stolen property over $5,000; one count of break, enter and theft of a residence; one count of theft under $5,000; four counts of mischief over $5,000; and one count of resisting arrest.

HORIZON SCHOOL DIVISION

Division to build portable for Wadena Devan C. Tasa Editor The Horizon School Division will be using its own money to buy a portable for Wadena Elementary School.

The portable is still in the engineering stage, but is expected to cost in the neighbourhood of $300,000.

Jim Hack, the board of education’s chair, said the school is overcrowded.

“We’re presently using some of the band area and part of the stage for classrooms,” he said.

Kevin Garinger, the division’s director of education, said the money will come from a fund meant to make capital investments for schools that First Nations students attend.

APPLICATION With both Humboldt Collegiate Institute and Humboldt Public School a b o v e c a p a c i t y, t h e Horizon School Division is applying for portables.

These particular portables would be paid by the education ministry.

The decision was made at the Oct. 10 board of education meeting.

“Our population in both facilities has continued to go up over the last few years. We haven’t seen any sort of stability that way,” Garinger said.

“Every year it’s going up and up and up and now at HCI we might be over 400 children for the first time in a long, long time. The same at HPS. Our numbers go up at the public school and having space for our kids is critical there as well.”

education ministry, HCI is at 115 per cent capacity, while HPS is at 106.

In practical terms, being above 100 per cent doesn’t mean a school is filled to the brim, as the formula doesn’t necessarily count gathering spaces or some of the technical arts classrooms.

The education ministry starts thinking about providing portables to schools when they reach the 140 or 150 per cent mark.

Garinger said the division isn’t expecting to receive new portable immediately with the application. The idea is to build a case for them in the future.

“Once we get them in the queue, then when they see our continuous need, that may spur on the response to eventually get a couple portables when it becomes more critical.”

“Of course, we know that Englefeld is part of that,” Garinger said. “We recognize we’ve got another school in our midst and so it’s wonderful to have more children that this board gets to support.”

None of the division’s schools will see a viability review this year. Those reviews can be triggered

A review of the school division’s electoral boundaries – the subdivisions – is looking like it will suggest something close to the status quo.

Horizon has 14 subdivisions, each of which elects a trustee.

“The board had decided five or six months ago we were going to take a look at the [subdivision] boundaries of Horizon School Division,” Hack said. “Attendance areas and subdivision boundaries don’t necessarily match, so that was our reason for looking at them.”

The school board chair expects some boundary tweaks so that school attendance area and subdivision boundaries match.

The board of education also voted to sign a letter written by the Canadian School Boards Association asking them to halt tax changes affecting trustees.

With the changes, trustees – and municipal officials – will no longer have one-third of their pay tax-free.

The association said in the letter it fears the chances will discourage citizens from running for trustee positions.

“The concern is to be able to subsidize that, we may have to increase indemnities the trustees get,” Garinger said.

“That would be consistent across the province for other municipal bodies as well.”

Foundation hopes donation will encourage others Devan C. Tasa Editor The Quill Plains Health Care Foundation hopes a large donation will encourage other to give money to make a renovation to the seniors’ home possible.

At a ladies’ night out in Watson, the Watson Recreation fund donated $25,000 from the community harvest project to be used to renovate the east wing of the Quill Plains Centennial Lodge.

To replace the 50-year-old wing, which has 12 level four long-term care beds, with one with the same number of beds is expected to cost arougly $8 million. The community is expected to raise $1.6 million, 20 per cent of the cost, before the provincial government will act.

“It is a great kickstart.

We have done fundraising already but the area is starting to get wound up now,” said Norma Weber, the foundation’s chair.

Weber said commitment forms are out in the mail and she hopes people will fill them out because it’s important to keep exceptional healthcare in rural communities close to family and friends instead of having to go to the cities.

“We’re looking for our government ministers to come out here and tour our facility and let them know we are serious about this project,” she said. “We are going to get our money together and hope they will find it fit to carry through this project.”

The ladies night out itself raised $7,000 for the Quill Plains Centennial Lodge Activity Department.

Shelterbelts could boost crop yields There is an old adage about history often repeating itself, and that might just be the case when it comes to farm shelterbelts.

As long as there have been farms, farmers have always had a sort of lovehate relationship with trees.

My grandfather homesteaded in Saskatchewan more than a century ago now and I well-remember his stories about clearing the home quarter largely with an axe, horse and sweat. He talked about how when the money ran out for homesteaders like himself and he needed to replenish funds to allow him to continue clearing

Trees in the era of the homesteader were simply big weeds taking up valuable land they want to plant to crop.

The Dirty Thirties changed that viewpoint a lot.

The drought years of the 1930s meant topsoil was left to erode with the wind. The photographs of dust storms, and dirt-filled ditches left in their wake are memorable to anyone who has seen them.

A solution to such erosion, or at least a barrier of some protection, was to plant tree shelterbelts. That

was something my father’s generation often did. The rows of trees helped trap snow in winter to provide moisture and slowed winds that protected against soil blowing away.

With the widespread adoption of zero-till farming techniques, erosion by wind and water became less of a concern a few decades ago.

And with the emergence of larger and larger equipment shelterbelts were increasingly seen as a nuisance, and many farmers of my generation were once again chopping trees, albeit by mechanical means.

But a recent study is suggesting shelterbelts might actually help in terms of crop yields.

Producers are always looking for ways to punch up yields, from looking at new ways to apply additional fertilizer, to the addition of micronutrient packages not even thought of 25-years ago.

But could better yields be as simple as planting a row of trees across a field and leaving them to grow for the next few decades?

The Vikings football team won their game against Wynyard on Saturday Oct. 13. Way to go! I was at home doing garage sales and listened to all the cheering.

Vaccine protocols important to herd immunization Jessica R. Durling Reporter

Vaccines are an important part of managing a herd’s health. With new research coming out every year comes more options for producers.

Dr. Dorothy Erickson, a manager of veterinary services with Zoetis spoke to a crowd of farmers in Tisdale at a producer meeting. One of her key focuses was on fetal protection. She advocates fetal protection is required throughout the entire pregnancy.

Dr. Dorothy Ericson ing that fetus at risk for picking up disease or for loss, a disease that can that animal to lose that fetus,” Erickson said. “So if she has an abortion that animal is not going to be

able to carry the pregnancy to term and not going to have a calf that year. There are different diseases that can cause risk of abortion, so if you don’t have fetal protection throughout the entire pregnancy you’re really leaving that animal at risk for picking up a disease and that fetus.”

For that she advises working with your local veterinarian to develop the vaccine protocol that best addresses your specific herd needs.

“A lot of it comes back to working with your

veterinarian to develop a vaccine protocol that can be specified for your farm because there are so many options out for it now, and there are so many options that allow you to fit in different situations.”

For vaccinating calves, she said Inforce 3 is an ideal first vaccine for young calves.

Either Bovi-shield Gold One Shot or combining Inforce 3 with One Shot BVD will offer complete respiratory protection.

According to Erickson, vaccination protocol can

heavily differ from farmer to farmer.

“Timing of calving is going to be different. For example, some people might be calving in January while some people in May,” Erickson said. “It affects when you can handle your cattle, so if you’re calving in May and they’re out on pasture those cattle may not be as accessible to you at an older age because they’re going to be already out on pasture.

So it is definitely going to affect when you’re going to be able to be handling

those cattle, when you are going to be able to vaccinate them.”

Erickson said the best method for learning a protocol is just to meet with your local veterinarian.

“Vaccines are being so heavily researched and developed right now, there is new things coming out every year so there might be something that can just improve it a little bit more or just make sure you’re staying current and getting the best protocol for your herd.”

Three important demographic trends for SMBs

From October 14 to 20, 2018, the Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) will be celebrating entrepreneurship during the 39th BDC Small Business Week. The event seeks to highlight the work of Canadian entrepreneurs, who have many challenges to face.

Crop Report EAST-CENTRAL SASKATCHEWAN Some producers were able to return to the field over the weekend to continue harvest. Sixty-three per cent of the crop is now in the bin, up from 61 per cent last week but well behind the five-year (2013-17) average of 77 per cent for this time of year.

Frequent rain and snow have delayed harvest in most of the region, and a good couple of weeks of warm, dry and windy weather is needed to get the crop off. Any grain that

has come off recently is being placed in dryers as it is tough or damp.

A combination of rain and snow was reported across the region, ranging from trace amounts to 35 millimetres in the Esterhazy area. The Raymore and Foam Lake areas five millimetres of precipitation.

Topsoil moisture on cropland is rated as four per cent surplus, 65 per cent adequate, 23 per cent short and eight per cent very short. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture conditions are rated as

NORTHEASTERN SASKATCHEWAN 56 per cent adequate, 34 percent short and 10 per cent very short.

At this time, most livestock producers in the region are indicating adequate supplies of hay, straw, greenfeed and feed grain heading into winter.

However, some areas have inadequate supplies and there may be shortages.

The majority of crop damage this past week was due to lodging from snow and rain; downgrading is expected at the elevator as some crops are bleached or sprouted.

4 strategies to help small and medium-sized businesses grow Small and medium-sized enterprises are the driving force of our country’s economy, and as such, their growth and prosperity are of the utmost priority. According to a study published by the BDC in October 2015, there are four main strategies that promote business growth.

1. BE CUSTOMER-CENTRIC. Understanding and satisfying the needs of your customers is without a doubt the most important key to success. This builds customer loyalty and allows you to attract new clients.

2. BUILD A WINNING TEAM. Hire qualified employees or train your existing personnel. This will allow you to delegate important responsibilities and push your business’s limits.

3. STAY AHEAD OF THE PACK. Understanding the needs of your customers is one thing; being able to fill them another. Innovation is crucial in adapting to the needs and demands of your clients.

4. INVEST TO BE THE BEST. Increasing production capacity by purchasing new equipment and improving efficiency by adopting new technologies are investments that are often necessary for a SME to grow.

Producers in the northeast have been working long hours to try to get the crop in the bin. Almost all of the crops are coming off tough or damp and are being placed in dryers as space permits. Sixty-four per cent of the crop is now combined, significantly up from 45 per cent last week but behind the fiveyear (2013-17) average of 82 per cent for this time of year. Recent snow and rain in the last few days will likely slow down progress for many producers. A good couple weeks of warm, dry and

windy weather is needed in order to get the rest of the crop off.

Precipitation in the region ranged from trace amounts to 20 millimetres in the Tisdale area. A combination of snow and rain was reported across the region, with the Lake Lenore area seven millimetres and the Kinistino area 10 millimetres. Many fields remain wet from the recent moisture. Topsoil moisture conditions on cropland are rated as 15 per cent surplus, 78 per cent adequate, six per cent short and one per cent very short. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as nine per cent sur-

plus, 86 per cent adequate and five per cent short.

Thanks to timely rain throughout the growing season, most livestock producers in the region have indicated adequate supplies of hay, straw, greenfeed and feed grain heading into winter.

The majority of crop damage this past week was due to lodging from snow and rain; downgrading is expected at the elevator as some crops are bleached or sprouted.

Some standing crops such as canola have shelled out from wind and snow and wildlife and geese have been feeding on swathed crops.

MAMER: Elaine Lea Mar. 12, 1940 - Oct. 7, 2018 The death of Mrs. Elaine Lea (nee Godart) Mamer of Humboldt, SK, (and formerly of Lake Lenore, SK), occurred at Humboldt District Hospital on Sunday, October 7, 2018. She was 78 years of age. Elaine, the fourth child of Marcel and Louise (nee Buan) Godart of St. Brieux, SK, was born on March 12, 1940, at Humboldt. She attended Miora Lake country school until her parents moved from their farm west of St. Brieux to town. Elaine then attended St. Brieux School. After her school years, she worked on her father’s farm and in their theatre in St. Brieux. Elaine also worked as a telephone operator in Lake Lenore until she married Norbert “Bert� Mamer in 1957. Their union was blessed with six children, three daughters and three sons. Elaine and Bert began their life together on the Mamer homestead at Lake Lenore where they ran their own farming operation, and also helped Elaine’s father on his St. Brieux district farm. Elaine and Bert moved into Lake Lenore in 1961. Elaine devoted those early years to raising their six children and caring for their home.

Family always came first in her life. In 1982, Elaine and Bert began doing maintenance work for St. Anthony’s Parish. For 23 years, they took great care in making sure the church, church yard, and cemetery were always looking beautiful and well kept.

Elaine was an active member of the C.W.L., curling club, and Home and School. She enjoyed her hobbies of quilting, needlework and curling in the winter. Each of her children treasure the quilts and tea towels Elaine made for them. During spring and summer, Elaine’s time was spent working outside in her yard.

She took great pride in her beautiful flower and vegetable gardens. Throughout the years, Elaine prepared delicious holiday meals for her family. After retirement, she and Bert enjoyed spending time at the family cabin at Barrier Ford. Many fond memories were made as family gathered to share each other’s company whether it was a birthday, anniversary or just a weekend get-away. “Mom slipped quietly away to be with Dad on October 7, 2018, the day before what would have been their 61st Anniversary.� Elaine will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her six children: Debbie (Jack) Jestin of Davidson, SK; MaryLou Mamer of Lake Lenore, SK; Marlene (David) Pfeiffer of Humboldt, SK; Brian (Jean) Mamer of Saskatoon, SK; Dean (Cynthia) Mamer of Prince Albert, SK; and Keith (Sharla) Mamer of Melfort, SK; and by 16 grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; her sister, Lois Martinson of Penticton, BC; and by numerous other family members. She was predeceased by her husband, Norbert Mamer; grandson, Jerrod Brinkman; parents, Marcel and Louise (nee Buan) Godart; brother, Robert Godart; and by her sister, Evelyn Mumby. The Funeral Mass was offered at St. Anthony’s R.C. Church, Lake Lenore, on Friday, October 12, 2018, at 2:00 p.m., celebrated by Fr. Anthony Atter. Others taking part were: Merrick Mamer, crossbearer; Chelsea Hartman, scripture reader; Kaitlyn Mamer and Emily Mamer, intentions; Dustin Mamer and Marcus Mamer, giftbearers; Tasha Cooper and Marissa Brinkman, memorial table attendants; and Brian Mamer, urnbearer. DANYLCHUK: Leo Walter Feb. 21, 1947 - Oct. 8, 2018 It is with great sadness that his family announce the passing of Leo Danylchuk on Monday, October 8, 2018 at the Humboldt District Hospital with his loving family by his side. He was 71 years of age. Leo was raised on a farm at Dana, SK, and Bruno is where he met the love of his life Marlene Bender. They were married on November 25, 1967.

They raised three children on a farm at Rycroft, Alberta. Leo worked as a heavy equipment operator his entire life. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, farming and playing cards. Leo (Toby) as most people knew him by is and will be fondly missed by all who knew him. Toby will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his loving wife of 50 years, Marlene (nee Bender) Danylchuk; his children and their families, Cory Danylchuk and his children Devon and MacKenzie; Chris (Karen) Danylchuk and children Cayden and Jaron; Sherry Brodie and her children Dustin (Aftin) Livingston, Kevin Livingston and Jesse Livingston; and two great-grandchildren: Austin and Karis. He is also survived by his sisters: Pearl (Dennis) Thiel and Shirley (Gary) Wurm; brothers David Danylchuk and Harvey Danylchuk; and mother-in-law Lena Bender. He is survived by his mom, Leona; and sons, Brad (Jenny) and their children Isaac and Jesse, and Mark (Rochelle) and their daughter Aiyana. Mel coached hockey for many years, mostly in the Uplands area. He loved sports, but more than that, he cherished the opportunity to make a positive impact in young people’s lives. In his later years, he could usually be found weight lifting, playing with his grandchildren, or simply enjoying a cup of coffee and watching the traffic pass. Mel loved life, he made the days count, and he pressed forward with hope, optimism, and humor, even when the odds were stacked against him. A PRIVATE FAMILY SERVICE will be held to celebrate Mel’s life. Mel was the gifted recipient of a lung transplant and his family is extremely grateful to all organ donors and their families. HAUSER: Edward Ferdinand Apr. 5, 1925 - Sept. 30, 2018 Edward “Ed” Ferdinand Hauser of Pilger, SK, passed away at his residence on Sunday, September 30, 2018. He was 93 years of age. Ed was born on April 5, 1925, to Frank and Julia (nee Pomedli) Hauser at home on their farm in the Pilger district. He grew up there and attended Colorado School. At a young age, Ed started farming with his parents. They moved to British Columbia for a short period of time, and then returned to Pilger and farmed there. After returning, Ed spent one winter mining in Sudbury, Ontario. He met Gertrude “Gertie” Bregenser at a dance in Pilger and they were married in 1951. At that time, Ed and Gertie began farming on their own. They were blessed with four sons who followed in Ed’s footsteps and made farming their careers. Ed eventually retired and in 1993, he and Gertrude moved off the farm and into their home in Middle Lake. Although he was retired from farming, Ed remained very active on the farm helping his boys until the age of 92. He experienced all aspects of farming, from horses to modern day GPS and autosteer. Ed and Gertie spent many winters in Arizona. As well, Ed enjoyed hunting and spending summers up at Nemeiben Lake fishing with his lifelong American friends. He also took an avid interest in restoring everything from antique tractors, to cars and old farm equipment. Ed’s pride and joy was his 1925 Model T and Lanz Bulldog tractors. Most mornings were spent with his coffee-row friends. His greatest joy was derived from family gatherings, including his children, their spouses, grandchildren, and greatgrandchildren. This past July, Ed and Gertie celebrated 67 years of marriage. Ed will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his wife, Gertrude (nee Bregenser) Hauser; their four children, eight grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren: Brian (Betty) Hauser and family, Chantelle (Justin) Gamble and children Dagen, Kierstyn and Makenna, and Derek (Tiffany) Hauser and children Brody and Addison; Murray (Shirleyann) Hauser and family, Riley (Tiana) Hauser and Rochell Hauser; Russell (Donna) Hauser and family Aaron (Deena) Hauser and children Damon and Halle, and Brett (Ashton) Hauser; and Wayne (Denise) Hauser and family Graham Hauser and Morgan Hauser; two sisters and one brother: Mary Langenhoff, Anne Baran, and John Hauser; and by numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Frank and Julia (nee Pomedli) Hauser; and by two brothers: Tony Hauser and Frank Hauser.

The Funeral Mass was offered at Holy Trinity R.C. Church, Pilger, on Friday, October 5, 2018, at 10:00 a.m., celebrated by Fr. Peter Olisa.
