NEWS Smiling with an alligator
Man evades traffic stop in Lanigan Staff
A 28-year old Nova Scotian man has been arrested after evading a traffic stop check. C o m b i n e d Tr a ff i c Services, with help from Lanigan, Wynyard and Watrous RCMP, had a check stop on Highway #16 in Lanigan Sept. 26, said a release from Lanigan RCMP. Around 9:30 am a van travelling eastbound on Highway #16 was waved into the check stop area. The van entered into the check stop area, but instead of coming to a stop, it accelerated, jumping over the curb and nearly hitting a police officer. The van fled the check stop eastbound on Highway #16 at a high rate of speed. Members at the scene
were able to obtain a licence plate as the vehicle was fleeing and conducted records checks. Those checks indicated the van was stolen out of Lloydminster, Alta. Officers located the vehicle a short time later stuck in a field, still occupied by the driver. The man is in custody until Oct. 10, where he’ll appear in Saskatoon Provincial Court. He has been charged with eight offences: assaulting a peace officer, possession of property obtained by crime, evading police, possession of a prohibited weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, failure to comply with an undertaking, theft of a motor vehicle and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.
Two dead, one injured by collision near Cudworth Staff
A collision between a vehicle and a combine south of Cudworth has left two dead and one injured. The vehicle, heading southbound, hit the combine at the intersection of Highway #2 and provincial grid road 767, which is approximately 6.6 kilometres south of Cudworth. The combine was coming off the grid road. W a k a w R C M P, Hoodoo Fire Department and EMS were called on the scene at 5 pm Sept. 27. Two women
in the vehicle were pronounced deceased at the scene, while a man was transported to hospital in Saskatoon with undetermined injuries. The combine driver was not injured. Police closed the intersection until 1:15 am Sept. 28 so a RCMP traffic reconstructionist could gather evidence along with the Saskatchewan Coroner’s Service. Police say the collision is still under investigation. At this time, they believe alcohol was not a factor in the collision.

Division to have new office by January Devan C. Tasa Editor
The Horizon School Division will soon move into a new $5.5 million central office that it owns outright and will house their entire operation under one roof. At this point in time, the division leases the bottom floor of the Olymel building and has some of its central office function in a quonset across the highway. Kevin G a r i n g e r, t h e d i v i sion’s director of education, said the lease g o e s f ro m J a n u a r y 2014 to February 2019. “ We m e t w i t h Olymel and their leadership and their space that they have upstairs, they’re
crammed in up there,” he said. “Their operation has expanded and this being their We s t e r n C a n a d i a n Headquarters, they need the space on the bottom floor.” The quonset isn’t roomy enough to house all of the staff. “We’d be looking for additional space regardless and we’d have to continue to pay lease fees unless we moved ahead and did something to have a building we’d own and operate.” So with money the division saved up, most of it coming from when Horizon was created back in 2006, they decided to build a new 18,000 square foot office on
the same four-acre lot the quonset’s located. The building is being designed and built by the same contractor, which Garinger said could save the division money and provides enough flexibility for design changes during construction. The division spends $115,000 per year in lease payments, plus additional rental costs when there’s a requirement for larger meetings that can’t go into one of the division’s schools. The new building will be a capital asset for the division and will have enough space for those larger meetings. Harder to nail down are savings coming from an more efficient
central office. “It’s certainly significant when you take into account the time it takes to operate a central office when you’re in two buildings,” Garinger said. The building will be ready for inspection in mid-December. Once t h a t h u rd l e ’ s c o m plete, the division will start moving into the new office, bringing its older but still good furniture with them. The goal is to be fully operational when students return to school from the holidays Jan. 7. The old quonset will be tendered out, with the winner having to move it off site. The space it takes will then become a parking

Today’s wild weed could be tomorrow’s super crop If you are a regular reader of this space, and thanks to those who are, then you know I am a believer in maintaining older genetics, whether they are within a heritage breed of livestock, or in the plants from which our current crops evolved. The reasoning is simple enough, the world we live in changes, and that means what we grow today may not be well-suited for the world our children live in, or our grandchildren. For our scientists to be able to adapt crops and livestock for differing conditions we may need to be able to go back to the foundational building blocks and essentially start over in developing something that will fill those future needs. So I was more than a little interested when a release came via email from the Crop Science Society of America (CSSA) dealing with the very topic. The article related, “plant genetic resources are any plant materials, such as seeds, fruits, cuttings, pollen, and other organs and tissues from which plants can be grown. The stewards are the breeders, researchers, farmers, gene bank staff, and many others who keep them safe and utilize them.” It went on to note Peter Bretting, a National Program L e a d e r f o r t h e U S D A’ s
Calvin Daniels Agricultural Research Service, saying these plant genetic materials and those who care for them are important for human survival. “These are the materials for crop breeding which play a role in food security and plant research,” he said in the article. “Crops make up the thin green line standing between humanity and calamity. To feed the growing world population, breeders must develop new crop types that yield more on less land with less material such as water and fertilizer.” Interestingly, the article also noted, “an important part of these plant genetic resources is crop wild relatives. These are closely related to crop species but have not been domesticated by humans. They are often related to crops eaten today in some way and provide useful material for breeding, study, and preservation, says Bretting. “For example, breeders might find they want a trait like drought tolerance in a specific crop. It may be a rare

quality only found in an ancestor. Luckily, breeders might be able to find what they need thanks to the stewards who are conserving the wild ancestors.” This is fascinating in the sense it ties in with the concept that every species of plant and animal is worth preserving because science may find in the future it contains some trait or gene which may have a dramatically positive effect for humanity. That vision dovetails with the recent recognition by CSSA in celebrating Crop Wild Relative Week Sept. 22 to 29. The week was created by the scientific society to raise awareness of the valuable wild relatives of familiar crops. “The fruits, grains and roots of crop wild relatives are not as large as domesticated crops. Some might be bitter or have poor texture. But these hardy plants have a natural and useful diversity of traits that helped them live in some harsh conditions. These traits are useful to breeders in the fight to create a sustainable and secure food supply,” noted an article on the week. So to be prepared for what might come tomorrow we need to maintain the materials to develop the crops we will need. Who knows, a weed today may tomorrow be a valued part of agriculture.
It is common these days to find news outlets that run features under headlines like: “A look at what didn’t happen this week.” Journalism never used to worry about what didn’t happen. Airplanes that landed safely – and didn’t crash – never made the news. But we live in the age of Fake News, with the reality that false information spreads quickly around the world, causing damage that ranges from disrupting democratic elections to tarnishing the reputations of countless innocent individuals. It has reminded us that in-depth, credible, independent reporting done by trusted news sources is more important than ever. We have a job to do. A small part of that job is fighting Fake News by revealing the truth. No, Justin Timberlake did not say pedophiles control the music industry and no, Canada does not impose a 35 per cent tariff on vacuum cleaners from the United States, as some supporters of US President Donald Trump have claimed. The biggest part of the job is to be your trusted source, to work every day to bring you real news, which is as vital to democracy as clean air, safe streets, good schools and public health. It isn’t getting any easier. To misquote Mark Twain, reports of the death of newspapers are greatly exaggerated. But the business of bringing you the news – in print, on your phone, your tablet or your desktop computer – is challenged as it has never been before.

In the digital age, our audiences are larger than ever. There is a steady desire for news and information. But paying for it – maintaining the strong newsrooms that tell the stories of our communities – is harder and harder. Advertisers have shifted much of their money to global giants that don’t spend money on reporting, whether it’s what happens on Parliament Hill or at City Hall. We are seeking new business models that can continue to do the hard work of independent journalism across Canada—and asking for your help to secure a future in which real news remains strong. During National Newspaper Week 2018, we’re asking you to show your support for the Canadian news media industry. Playing in a band for popular singers, it’s easy to avoid the spotlight. That was the basis for the band name Ghostboy, a duo composed of critically acclaimed musicians Denis Dufresne and Aaron Young who will take to the stage in Humboldt later this month. Dufresne, an awardwinning fiddler and mandolin player from Medicine Hat, Alta., and Aaron, a prolific guitar player from Prince Albert, first played together in world music band Barrage at the age of 20. “We played on every PBS station and had toured the world by the time we were 25 or 26 years old,” said Dufresne. “[Young] went off to the jazz world and I went off to the country world.” Fast forward to three years ago when the pair moved about three

blocks from each other. “We started playing music together again and that’s how this all started. ‘Ghostboy’ comes from the fact that basically our day jobs are playing music for relatively famous people, so when you’re on stage with a really well-known singer, quite often the band doesn’t really get recognized.” That isn’t the case, though, when the pair tours through small Canadian towns with their brand of country music that is a throw-

stuff.” “There’s some leaving songs, there’s some love songs – a lot is based on our relationships,” said Dufresne. Audiences can expect a high energy show with world class playing from Ghostboy. The duo will perform some of their own tunes as well as covers of songs by artists they have backed or been influenced by. Ghostboy will take the stage at 7:30 pm on Thursday, Oct. 18 at the Humboldt and District Gallery. They’ll then stop in Wadena playing at 2 pm on Sunday, Oct. 21 at the Community Legion Hall.
back to 1970s country with a modern twist. “Getting the music out there, getting to these small town communities, it’s kind of a different thing,” said Dufresne. “When you put a show on in the big city, you put it on and then you leave. In a small town, you get invested in the people who come to your show. You get to go out in the audience after and meet people, and find out what their likes are and what they don’t like so much.” When it comes to writing their own original songs, Dufresne said a lot of them are inspired by “your token country

Crop Report EAST-CENTRAL SASKATCHEWAN Fields have been fairly quiet over the past few weeks as producers wait for sunny and dry weather to allow them to continue with harvest. There were reports of some combines rolling during the past week, mostly on canola and wheat. Fifty-eight per cent of the crop is now in the bin, up from 55 per cent last week. This is just slightly ahead of the fiveyear (2013-17) average of 55 per cent for this time of year. Of the crop that was combined this past week, the majority of it was taken off tough or damp and put into driers. Up to 15 centimeters m of snow was reported in some areas of the region. The Esterhazy area received 25 millimetres of rain, Kelliher area 15 millimetres, the Yorkton area eight millimetres, the Kuroki area 20 millimetres, the Earl Gray area 10 millimetres and the Semans area 38 millimetres. The Langenburg area has received the most precipitation (434 millimetres) in the region since April 1. Topsoil moisture on cropland is rated as seven per cent surplus, 62 per cent adequate, 26 per cent short and five per cent very short. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture conditions are rated as two per cent surplus, 52 per cent adequate, 33 percent short and 13 per cent very short. Crop reporters have indicated that the recent rain will most likely have
an effect on crop quality by causing bleaching and staining. The snow has caused crops to lodge. There has been some seeding of winter cereals. Producers are busy trying to combine and hauling hay bales.
NORTHEASTERN SASKATCHEWAN Another cool and damp week has held up harvest in most areas of the region. Some swathing and combining has occurred in between rain showers, and where less moisture was reported. Crops that were taken off in the last couple of weeks have been tough and damp and are being aerated and dried in storage. Thirty-four per cent of the crop is now combined, up from 29 per cent last week. The five-year (201317) average of 53 per cent for this time of year. Rainfall ranged from

none (Spruce Home area) to 32 millimetres (Vonda area). The Humboldt area 20 millimetres, the Melfort area 27 millimetres and the Kinistino area six millimetres. The Nipawin area has received the most precipitation in the region since April 1. Cropland topsoil moisture is currently rated as six per cent surplus, 81 per cent adequate and 13 per cent short. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as 90 per cent adequate and 10 per cent short. Geese are starting to show up on swathed crops. The wet weather has caused bleaching, staining and sprouting in some crops. Grain dryers are running constantly to bring the crop moisture down for safe storage. Producers are busy hauling hay and waiting for weather conditions to improve.
