Soup Kitchen celebrates fifth year
photo by Robin Tarnowetzki The Humboldt Soup Kitchen celebrated its fifth anniversary with a dinner and cake on July 30.
By Robin tarnowetzki Journal staff writer
The Humboldt Soup Kitchen celebrated its 5th year on July 30 with a meal and a cake. It’s come a long way from its humble beginnings. “We … started with eight people and a crockpot and a microwave. It grew right up to 60 people in five years,” said James Folster, co-ordinator for the
soup kitchen. The soup kitchen started when Folster developed tremors in his hands and could no longer work at his job. He started coming up with ideas for things to do, and settled on the soup kitchen. “The Lord prompted me to go and do this. It was like he led me to a different line of life altogether, because this disability – so-called disability – led me into a better life, I think,” he said. “And as a result of the soup kitchen starting, I met my wife, Hilda.” He approached PARTNERS Family Services and nothing happened at first. He went to them again, and this time the idea got off the ground. “There was no real kitchen,” Folster said. “Like I said, we had a crockpot and a microwave. We set up

a little table in the back alley and washed dishes in the back alley.” They eventually migrated to the Community Gathering Centre, where they host meals every Thursday in addition to special events like Christmas, Easter, New Year’s, and more. The seniors there handle any donations and financial business to do with the soup kitchen. “One person hungry is too many,” Folster said. “For me, it’s kind of been there, done that. I know what it’s like to be hungry, I know what it’s like to be lonely.” Folster and assistant co-ordinator Linda Jurgens would like to see more participation from seniors in the community who are lonely and want company. People mostly come from Humboldt, but people have come from around the region as well. Support comes from all over, including organizations in Englefeld, St. Gregor, Quill Lake, Watson, and more. In Humboldt, there is support from businesses such as Extra Foods, Kal-Tire, and Sobeys, as well as various church groups. The soup kitchen has also expanded to include other events such as open mic nights that showcase singing, poetry, and dancing. To Folster, it’s important to not only feed people who need it, but to provide that social aspect as well. “There are people that come here that not only need a meal, but some people come because they need company more than they need a meal,” he said. The soup kitchen isn’t done growing. There’s now a board of directors, since it became too big for Folster and Jurgens. “We’re in the process of becoming our own entity,” Jurgens said. The soup kitchen is a labour of love for the allvolunteer force that runs it, and it’s rewarding for all involved. “(The most rewarding part is) just to feed a child,” said Hilda Folster. “See a happy child with a full belly, or a poor old fella that has no wife and whatever and comes and has a meal and goes out with a full belly and gets to take some home.” “It was the first or second year we were here at the seniors hall and I walked by a table and there was a lady sitting there … and she said ‘Oh, this is so good. All I had the day before yesterday was a hot dog and a piece of watermelon,’’ Folster said. “Stuff like that is my reasoning. Help people who need help.” The dream from the beginning was to have their own building in order to provide more meals, though that’s not financially feasible right now. They would also like to eventually have a coffee nook, where people can come whenever they wanted to have coffee and chat. “It’s turned into its own identity now,” Folster said. “People who come here, they used to just sit down and have their meal and pretty much go home. Now, they’ve made friendships, they’ve met each other, they stay right to the end. A lot of people come to volunteer and make the meals and clean up after. It’s like a big family now.” The soup kitchen can always use donations of food, clothing, toiletries, razors, and more. To get in touch about donating, contact Linda Jurgens at jurgenslinda@gmail.com.

Protect against West Nile virus By Robin tarnowetzki Journal staff writer
The provincial government is asking residents to be aware of the risks of West Nile virus and take precautions in order to prevent transmission of the virus. West Nile is a virus found in birds, which can then be spread to people when a mosquito (the main species that carries it is Culex tarsalis) bites an infected bird and then bites a person. The virus was introduced into North America in 1998 and Saskatchewan in 2002. Since then, it’s been in the province in varying degrees. The CDC estimates that 70-80 per cent of people infected with West Nile virus won’t feel symptoms. About one in five develop a fever with accompanying symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, or a rash. People with these symptoms recover completely, though fatigue can linger for awhile. Less than one per cent of infected people develop a neurological disease. “The majority of people who get West Nile Virus will not need medical attention and will improve on their own, Saskatchewan’s Deputy Chief Medical Health Officer Dr. Denise Werker said in a news release. “However, a patient should see a doctor immediately if they develop serious symptoms like a persistent fever, neck stiffness, severe headaches, confusion, seizures or paralysis. Culex tarsalis lays eggs in ditches or sloughs where they get flooded in the spring with snow melt and hatch. They come out, eat and then lay eggs where they get flooded in the spring again and hatch. “They can go for years - five, seven years - without getting flooded again and they’ll just be sitting there in the soil, said Phil Curry, the province’s West Nile virus co-ordinator. There can be several generations in a season. The numbers slowly build during the summer, reaching a peak in late July and early August – which is the time people are most at risk of West Nile. “In a year like this, we’re starting to see as our general mosquito population declines, tarsalis is slowly increasing in numbers, Curry said. What this means is while the hot and dry weather is keeping mosquitoes away, Culex tarsalis is becom-
ing a greater fraction of the overall mosquito population. “This is the same situation we saw in 2003, Curry said. “There were very few mosquitoes. It was a very dry year. People remarked how few mosquitoes were out, and yet we had dozens of human cases. The province does a weekly risk assessment of the virus and publishes it on the government website every Friday. Curry and others test mosquitoes for West Nile to see what the numbers are like. The number of infected mosquitoes is expected to increase in the next few weeks. To help decrease the risk of West Nile, Curry advises people to wear repellants, cover up, wear long sleeves and pants, as well as closed-toe shoes. As well, individuals should eliminate any potential sources of water that may have mosquitoes develop in it, such as covering rain barrels, changing birdbath water once a week, etc. “Any kind of container that can hold water for more than a week or two can be a potential source of these mosquitoes, he said. In addition, if your town or city has a mosquito control program, Curry asks that you support it. “West Nile is here to stay in Saskatchewan. Some years are lower levels of activity than others, he said.

Chamber dog run idea unleashed By Melanie Jacob Journal Editor In the next month or so, the Humboldt & District Chamber of Commerce is hoping to raise enough money to build a dog run next to the mini golf course. “The idea of the dog run started after last year. We unfortunately had a slow season, so we were looking for ways to increase tourism visitors to our city, which obviously stimulates our economy, so we looked at pet tourism, said Debra Nyczai, executive director of the chamber. “Statistics show that the pet industry in Canada is $6.5 billion a year. Half of North American households have pets and of those, half travel with them. The dog run will be a space enclosed by a chain link fence that is expected to be 10 feet wide, 60 feet long, and six feet high. It will have a double gate system for safety features, a pet waste dispenser, a garbage can, and access to water for the dogs. It’s expected to cost $5,000. “It’s going to be available not just to tourists and visitors to our community, but to the entire community, the locals as well, and it will be at no
charge, said Nyczai. On July 22, the chamber held an informal Business after Business event so that people could network and talk
about the dog run idea. Nyczai said the feedback so far has been really good and they’ve already managed to raise about 25-30 per cent of the funds

they need. Stoney Lake Construction has offered to clear the land they need for the enclosure. For anyone who wants to sponsor, there are three levels: • Level 1 - $100: get your name on a sponsor plaque • Level 2 - $250: name and small company logo on the plaque • Level 3 - $500: name and large company logo on sponsor plaque “Just with marketing this as a pet friendly region, a pet friendly community, obviously people who do travel with their pets will stop, stay, and spend their money in a community that offers pet friendly services,â€? said Nyczai. “So if we do some effective marketing, we hope that people will stop and stay here, as opposed to driving a larger centre or a smaller centre that has this type of dog run.â€? Nyczai wanted to extend her thanks to a few businesses that have already donated towards this venture: • Humboldt Home Hardware • Carlton Trail College • Canalta Hotel • City Taxi & Delivery Bella Vista Inn and the Humboldt Co-op provided refreshments for the evening social.

Humboldt hit hard by storm By Robin tarnowetzki Journal staff writer
People around the city dealt with flooding after being pounded with rain and winds on July 28. An estimated 100-150 millimetres of rain drenched the city. Peter Bergquist, director of planning and engineering for the city, said he has no number for how many homes were affected. He did that say most of the flooding in homes was due to sewage backups. “The reason for that was the lift stations couldn’t handle the amount of fluids coming in,” he said. The department of public works was out in the rain trying to deal with the massive amount of water. “To our knowledge, we received more rain this storm than the 2010 storm,” Bergquist said. Each municipality with a wastewater system needs a permit, and there’s a provision for an emergency bypass. The City had to utilize this provision, diverting sewage into a drainage system that leads to Stoney Lake. Patrick Boyle, manager of corporate communications with the provincial Water Security Agency, said this kind of action is infrequent but becomes unavoidable in emergency situations. If the water wasn’t diverted, it could lead to the water treatment system becoming damaged or destroyed. “That would be a far worse situation than what we’re dealing with right now,” he said.
because that was helping us by holding back some of the storm system further,” Bergquist said. In addition, parts of the roof at Humboldt Public School fell off, and the debris is cordoned off by caution tape. He said 7th Ave. “was in pretty big trouble” and intersections got hit the hardest. He couldn’t say which houses were more likely to have had problems with sewer backup because he didn’t know which houses had backflow prevention. Now, the lift stations are back to normal, though Bergquist said crews are still dealing with “a fair amount” of sump pump water going into them. The City’s super pipes were set to be drained this week because they were “100 per cent photo by Robin Tarnowetzki full.” The super pipes were installed to prevent sewer backups and can hold 2.1 million litres of water. The Water Security Agency is monitoring the situ“We have the super pipes this time, which lowered ation at Stoney Lake to measure the impacts and are in touch with the City. The Saskatoon Health Region the extent of damage significantly,” Bergquist said. Ultimately, he said the crews did all they could in issued an advisory cautioning people against any activities in the water but this advisory has since the conditions they had. “We did everything in our power to prevent backbeen lifted. Other damage included downed branches and ups, even though they did happen. We did what we trees tipped over, though to Bergquist’s knowledge, could and unfortunately some backups did happen the damage there wasn’t that extensive. The ball and we had to release some water into the lake sysdiamonds at the Uniplex are flooded and were set tem untreated as a result,” Bergquist said. “It was the best that we could do with the systems we had to be drained this week. “We wanted to wait until the water went down available.”
Trade deals can get complicated
Calvin Daniels When it comes to world trade, the idea of free movement of goods is held up as an idea the world should aspire to. But when country officials sit down to hammer out trade deals there are more potholes to traverse than a three-hour drive on a secondary highway in Saskatchewan. A case in point: Pacific Rim
trade ministers recently failed to hammer out a deal to free up trade between a dozen nations after a dispute flared up over auto trade between Japan and North America, New Zealand dug in over dairy trade, and no agreement was reached on monopoly periods for nextgeneration drugs. The failure to achieve a deal probably is not a surprise to anyone. The more players at the table, the more issues to overcome. There are many longstanding areas of friction between long-time trade partners which have a tendency to flare up again at a negotiation table. If you doubt that, think how often the United States pointed at the old Canadian Wheat

Board as an issue even after courts had deemed it was not. Currently, you can bet the issue of Country Of Origin Labelling (COOL) will be a raw nerve between the US and Canada for some time moving forward. Now consider what the Trans-Pacific Partnership was trying to accomplish. The TPT had trade ministers from the 12 nations negotiating toward a deal which would stretch from Japan to Chile and cover 40 per cent of the world economy. According to a recent story at www.producer.com, “The TPP seeks to meld bilateral questions of market access for exports with one-size-fits-all standards on issues ranging from workers’ rights to en1111 Centennial Way, Humboldt $312,000.00
vironmental protection and dispute settlement between governments and foreign investors.” Those are pretty heady goals. And when the same story noted, “The talks, which drew about 650 negotiators, 150 journalists and hundreds of stakeholders,” you can bet every line off any deal was scrutinized and argued and rebuffed over and over. The problem is simple: countries talk of a desire to freer trade, but in reality they mean they want easier access for their goods, yet to maintain a level of protection for their own favoured industries. The two are of course opposing viewpoints, albeit the motivation is understandable.

Canada would like freer access for, say, pork, as we produce far more pork than we can consume domestically, so it must find an export home. But we’d also like to protect our dairy sector as there is a level of concern about relying on another country shipping a staple such as milk thousands of miles to have a mom pour on her family’s breakfast cereal each morning. In the end, far-reaching trade deals are rarely accomplished simply, but rather by gaining small victories over the longer term. There will eventually be a TPP, but whether it is a widely meaningful deal, or merely a water-downed deal signed to save face among politicians is yet to be seen.

By Robin tarnowetzki Journal staff writer In conjunction with the Saskatchewan Churches exhibit, the Humboldt & District Museum has organized a “doors open” event for anyone who wants to see the interior of churches in Humboldt and the region, which will take place August 9. This allows people to see some buildings that they may not ordinarily get to see. “The (churches) exhibit focuses largely on the exterior of churches and the architecture and that sort of thing, which is very interesting and we have some lovely photos, but it’s always nice to go in and see the inside of churches,” said Jean Price, program co-ordinator at the Humboldt & District Museum. “Humboldt has some beautiful contemporary churches, and also some pretty significant historical churches in the area, so we wanted to try to get people access to those.” She said most churches were agreeable to participating and will have a volunteer available to answer any questions people may have. “The churches were mostly very keen to have people come in and see. I think it breaks down a lot of barriers about what this church is and what that church is,” she said. The museum has held doors open events before with historic buildings but this is the first one to feature churches. Since it’s in conjunction with the exhibit, a similar event probably won’t be held in subsequent years. However, if it goes well,
the museum may organize more themed events similar to this one. “We’re hoping that people take the opportunity to explore some of these buildings that might not be that accessible to them, particularly if they’re not members of that congregation,” Price said. “It’s always a bit awkward to say, ‘I’m just here to have a look around’ so that gives you the opportunity without the awkwardness, and also to appreciate the spectacular architecture.” She said that churches often have interesting art and layouts and added that in some cases the churches have been converted from a building with a different purpose, so it’s interesting to see what people do with the spaces that are available to them. The event will run until 4:30 p.m. on that day. The churches involved are: St. Peter’s Church St. Peter’s Abbey Marysburg Assumption Church St. Scholastica Brithdir United Westminster United and Seventh Day Adventist St. Augustine Roman Catholic St. John’s Lutheran St. Andrew’s Anglican Humboldt Alliance Living World Church International Kingdon Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses All Saints Ukrainian Catholic Humboldt Bible Church

As we look back over time We find ourselves wondering.. Did we remember to thank you Enough for all you Have done for us? For all the times you were by our Sides to help and support us.. To celebrate our successes, To understand our problems And accept our defeats? Or for teaching us by your example, The value of hard work, good Judgment, courage and integrity? We wonder if we Ever thanked you For the sacrifices you made. To let us have the very best? And for the simple things Like laughter, smiles And times we shared? If we have forgotten to show Our gratitude enough for All the things you did, We’re thanking you now. And we are hoping You knew all along, How much you meant to us.
