Frerichs throws no hitter as Red Sox go 3-0 By Christopher Lee Journal Reporter

The Muenster Midget AAA Red Sox went out on the road this week for three games as they visited the Saskatoon Giants on Jun. 8 before playing a double dip in Yorkton on Jun. 11 against the Parkland Expos.

HUMBOLDT Happy Father’s Day We’ll make you a fan.

Happy Father’s Day 11am to 1am Monday and Sunday 11am to 2am Thursday to Saturday

The Red Sox opened their matchup with the Giants going toe to toe through the first four innings of the ball game as both were held scoreless in innings one, three and four and both scored a pair of runs in the second inning to send the game to the fifth tied at two. In the fifth inning the Red Sox opened up the game a little bit as they scored three runs on two hits and two walks to take a 5-2 lead. The game remained tied until the top of the seventh inning when the Red Sox would add to their advantage thanks to one run on three hits. Adam Gerwing pitched an inning and a third to close out the game for the Red Sox after Parker McRae pitched 5.2 innings of sold baseball. The pair combined to allow four hits and two runs with none earned, while striking out 11 Giants batters and giving up one walk. Brody Frerichs had a great night at the plate for the Red Sox as he finished 3-4 with three runs batted in. The Red Sox returned to action to take on the Parkland Expos looking to extend their winning streak to three games. The two teams combined for a defensive battle and a pitching dual as neither team managed a run until the seventh inning with the Red Sox managed two runs on three hits. Frerichs was on fire on the mound for the Red Sox as he threw a no-hitter completing all seven innings for the Red Sox allowing just two walks while striking out 18 Expos batters. In addition to his solid performance on the mound

Frerichs also picked up a pinch-hit double that scored both Kalvin Rueve and Logan Hofmann to lead the Red Sox to a 2-0 victory. After a short break the two teams were right back in action as they looked to get their offenses going. The Red Sox scored a run in the first inning and added two in the second to take the early lead. A huge seventh inning that saw the Red Sox bat around busted the game wide open as the Red Sox scored seven runs on five hits and four walks to grab a 10-1 lead. The teams would trade a pair of runs with the Expos scoring twice in the fifth inning and the Red Sox scoring twice in the sixth inning as the Sox cruised to a comfortable 12-3 win. Thomas Lessmeister picked up the win for the Red Sox as he went six strong innings giving up nine hits and three runs with two of the earned while striking out seven. Offensively a pair of Red Sox lead the way in what was a fantastic offensive performance as McRae and David Lacoursiere combined to go 3-6 with three runs scored, four runs batted in and two walks. Thanks to their perfect 3-0 week the Red Sox improve their record to 14-2, which moves them 1.5 games up on the second place Saskatoon Cubs. The Red Sox have a busy week as they take on the aforementioned Cubs on Jun. 14 before returning to Saskatoon on Jun. 16 to take on the Diamondbacks. The Red Sox return home on Jun. 18 as they host the Swift Current Indians in their first home game in two weeks.

Horton says goodbye to prairies, heading back to seaside By Becky Zimmer Journal Editor

The prairie roads have been travelled, the friends have been made. But it was now time for the 12 students from Horton High School in Wolfville, Nova Scotia to head home after their week long exchange in LeRoy. I caught up with them for one last interview while they golfed and swam at Leisureland before their goodbye assembly at LeRoy School and catching a flight back to Nova Scotia. What is your attitude of Saskatchewan now that you have been here? Erin Keating: It’s quite flat but has a very good sense of community. Everyone knows everyone. To drive down the road and everyone just waves at everyone, very different than where I come from. It’s a difference sense of community. Logan McDougall: It’s flat but there is a lot of factories. It’s a pretty cool place. Tyler Corbin: Big tractors, big toys, everything’s bigger here. Kate MacAlpine: The people are really friendly and especially LeRoy, it’s all really connected and everyone knows each other and I think it’s a really good environment. Brooke Harvey: They’re really right when they said it’s really flat and a lot of farmland. It’s not a lot like Nova Scotia but it has similar characteristics. Brennae Melvin: It’s not as flat as they told me or that I thought it was. There’s more hills. I thought it was completely flat. Sabrina Doucette: It’s an amazing province. It’s definitely not what I was expecting and a place I’d visit a lot more often now. Tyler Corporan: It’s really flat but it’s really beautiful to look at because it’s a completely different landscape than

it is in Nova Scotia. Alex White: I’d like to move here if I could. Reanne MacDonald: I didn’t think I’d like it but I love it. I don’t want to leave now. Kelly Ross: It’s different but really pretty. I’m used to mountains and it’s all flat here but it’s really pretty to me. Alex Adams: It’s pretty flat and there is a lot of farmland. What was your favourite part of the trip? Keating: Seeing everyone again because it’s been a month since we’ve seen each other from Nova Scotia to Saskatchewan. It’s kind of bittersweet knowing that they’re six provinces away but we can still just call them. It’s really nice to know they’re going to be there. McDougall: Travelling. You get to see all the places when you drive by. MacAlpine: Deadlock Escapes in Saskatoon. Harvey: Making new friendships. Melvin: I liked the whole trip but my favourite part was probably the campfire and everyone hanging out with their new friends. Doucette: Going to the RCMP depot. I never even knew that existed so to get to go see it and see where the police train was really interesting to me. Corporan: I liked the Deadlock escapes and the BHP Billiton site. That was really cool. White: The RCMP depot. I’m looking into law enforcement or emergency services. MacDonald: Learning how the Chinese were treated back in the day (Moose Jaw Tunnels). Ross: Everything. The escape room was fun and hanging out with everyone and meeting new people. Adams: Deadlock Escapes

What are you going to take back to Nova Scotia with you from Saskatchewan? Keating: More appreciation of what Canada looks like in a different spot. Out west is completely different than from where I’m from. So it’s just that appreciation of the differences. McDougall: Probably a few things. I got more knowledge on Saskatchewan Corbin: The people are awesome. They’re good (at) home too, but it’s a smaller community here. Everyone knows each other a bit better than home. MacAlpine: The friendships that I’ve gained here and all the friends that I’ve met. I’ll have that forever. Harvey: The bonds and friendships I made. And I appreciate Nova Scotia more now that we don’t have to drive as long.

Melvin: The friendships. I’m going to be hopefully friends with these people a long time. Doucette: The friends that I made and the experiences that I had. I now have friends for life because of this trip and it’s really quite amazing to know I have friends in Saskatchewan now and if I ever wanted to come visit I’d have friends to stay with and people that I can be with. Corporan: I made quite a few friends and souvenirs for the family. White: The flatlands. That’s always a picture in my mind now when I think of Saskatchewan. MacDonald: Souvenirs that say Saskatchewan. Ross: A lot of things. Friendships I’ve known. Adams: Friendships I made.

Traeger BBQ Pellets are made from 100% recycled hardwood sawdust. Traeger Pellet Grills LLC is a leader in the reduction of wood waste. In partnership with sustainable wood suppliers, Traeger adds economic value to materials that were once considered “waste,” creating new business, products and jobs. This use of sawdust, previously burned or placed in landfills, results in significant economic, social, and environmental benefits.

Traeger wood pellet grills utilize an indirect cooking system that “reduces the fat” and charring, decreasing cancer causing “benzo-a-pyrene” on food. The hardwood smoke created by our wood pellets produces antioxidants similar to vitamin E. Traeger wood pellet grills are a healthier way to cook.

The burn system in every Traeger wood pellet grill is capable of a combustion efficiency rate of 98.8% with an extremely high “fuel to air” ratio. This means low emissions and a lower carbon footprint.

Avengers cap successful year with athletics banquet By Christopher Lee Journal Reporter

T h e T h re e L a k e s Avengers hosted their 14th annual athletic awards banquet in the gym at Three Lakes School in Middle Lake on Jun. 9. In total the athletic department handed out 33 awards in numerous categories including basketball, soccer, track and field, cross country, as well as athlete of the year to name a few. Avengers Athletic Director Trevor Otsig said it was important for the athletics department to recognize the effort of the athletes over the course of the year. “They put a lot of

time and effort and commitment in and on behalf of themselves and their parents and their community here. It’s something to make them feel proud of their achievements. The Avengers athletics department enjoyed a tremendous amount of success this season as the captured three provincial gold medals and a provincial bronze as well as six district championships. “The championships are a perk. The kids all work hard whether they win or lose but the championships are pretty sweet, says Otsig. A number of the championships stood out to Otsig including the cross-country provincial bronze medal. Since they were short on runners, to pick up a medal was great, he said. The boy’s soccer provincial gold medal was also really impressive says Otsig considering the soccer program was new this year. “To win their first ever that’s awesome because they said that doesn’t happen very often. Craig Martinka was a member of the boys soccer team that won the provincial gold medal and was awarded the Soccer MVP Award.

Martinka also claimed the Official of the Year Award, the 110% Bask e t b a l l Aw a rd , t h e Spirit of the Avengers Award, and was named the Senior Boys Athlete of the Year. “It’s an honour, lots of hard work and you keep going each and every day and working hard at all of your sports and it pays off, he said. A special one for Otsig was the girls basketball provincial gold medal since he was the coach. The girls managed a three-peat at provincials, which Otsig says rarely happens and was all the more impressive given how the season started. “At the beginning of the year we weren’t supposed to be there so it was pretty sweet. Rayna Olynuk was part of the senior girls basketball team and walked home with a number of awards including Senior Girls Basketball MVP, Volleyball MVP, Spirit of the Avengers Award, and Senior Girls Athlete of the year. Olynuk says the recognition she received was a great way to cap off her high school career and she felt awesome to be recognized in such a way by her coaches and peers. “It’s very flattering.

NEED A LITTLE EXTRA CASH? WANT TO GET SOME EXERCISE?

I feel awesome and it recognizes the commitment I’ve had to the athletic program here over the years. “I’d like to thank all the coaches and staff and all the players I’ve played with over the years it’s been awesome and I’m really grateful for the experience, she said. Otsig also credited the track and field team with having a great season and gave a special shout out to their lone medal recipient at provincials Masson Altrogge who captured the Midget Boys 100m Hurdles gold medal. Altrogge captured a number of championships this year and was rewarded with a number of awards during the evening including the Junior Cross-Country Award, Junior Boys Soccer Award, 110% Basketball Award, Track and Field Award, Participation Award for the most cumulative points during the course of the athletics season, and he also was named Junior Boys Athlete of the Year. Altrogge said it was a pretty good feeling to win that many awards and to be recognized by his coaches and peers. “I just go out to have fun in sports and I try my best for the team. Kelsey Parsons picked up a number of awards of her own including the Junior Girls Volleyball Award, Soccer MVP Award, 110% Basketball Award, and

Junior Girls Athlete of the Year. Parsons said it felt really good that she can be a leader for her teammates and said that the awards were the culmination of a lot hard work over the years. “It feels really good to know that my hard w o r k h a s p a i d o ff throughout the years. Ever since I was in grade 4, I loved sports and just carried on. In addition to handing out awards the banquet also featured a guest speaker as St. Gregor’s Kirk Muyres gave a speech to the students as well. Despite being a graduate of nearby Muenster School, Muyres said he was very happy to have the opportunity to speak in front of the athletes. “I always jump at the opportunity to do something like this. During the course of his speech Muyres continued to speak about hard work and says he hopes that, that is what the athletes take away from his speech. “You can’t be afraid of hard work at the end of the day and the reality of the world is the people that work the hardest get rewarded for it. Otsig says they try to have someone come in every year to be a guest speaker and said Muyres was a perfect fit especially considering he was their first curler at the banquet.

CROSSWORD

“It just shows them that maybe if I work hard enough maybe they can get there and that’s the great thing about bringing in a variety of speakers over the years‌it’s just something different and when you get someone like that out the kids can hopefully aspire to be something like that.â€? The banquet also featured both a live and silent auction with the proceeds going to the athletics program. Otsig says this year’s money is going to be put towards an outdoor shed for storing the physical education equipment. Many donors came forward to donate items to the auctions, which Otsig said is really important for their athletics program because it allows them to invest more money in their athletics department. “We built outdoor basketball and tennis courts and glass backboards all around (the gym) and it comes from that and even just balls. A ball nowadays is $75 for a basketball so you can buy some extra things along the way and it benefits the kids.â€? “I just thank all the sponsors for donating and all the donors. They always support us well. Thank all the parents for their time and commitment for their kids and I know in the long run the kids in sports are going to benefit from them for the rest of their lives.â€?

Cropper Motors hosts pair of Drive One events By Christopher Lee Journal Reporter

Cropper Motors hosted a pair of Ford Drive One 4UR School events as they were at Watson School on Jun. 4 and at Naicam School on Jun. 7. The event saw Cropper Motors provide members of the community the opportunity to drive a number of Ford vehicles including the Fusion, Escape, Explorer, F150 Platinum, F150 XLT, and Edge. Interested test drivers were required to complete a short survey before the test drive and for every test drive that was completed Ford donated $20 to the school. Cropper Motors Marketing Coordinator, Aeran Schmid says this is a great way for the school’s to do additional fundraising because it takes a lot of the

pre-event work out. “You don’t have to worry about selling tickets...so I think it’s a very important type of fundraiser to do.” The event in Watson was very well attended with 187 approved test drives that saw $3,840 raised for the school. Watson School Principal, Jay Fitzsimmons, was very pleased to see that many people show up to do a test drive, especially considering the size of the community and said it was very important for their school to have that much support, especially from Cropper Motors. “We don’t have a huge pool to draw from as far as resources go so it’s really nice that big businesses are willing to come out and give back to the communities.” Watson also hosted a lemonade stand

during the day, which raised an additional $75 for the school. The money raised from the Watson event is going towards a digital sign that will be out in front of the school. The sign will display the various announcements and upcoming events for the community and will be a great way for the school to promote their events, says Fitzsimmons. Fitzsimmons says he was very pleased with how the day went and wanted to thank everyone for their hard work and support. “The School Community Council who organized it and oversaw the entire running... and Cropper Motors of course for coming out and providing the vehicles… and to all the volunteers who showed up did a whole bunch of work with that.” A couple of days later Naicam hosted

their own Drive One event. Naicam saw a really great turnout as they had 241 approved test drives and raised $4,820. The money raised from this year’s event is going towards purchasing some new furniture for the student lounge, which is way over due says Hayward. “Right now they have one couch in there that’s on its last legs.” Seeing the support from Cropper Motors is extremely important because it provides the school the opportunity to buy some additional items for the school that they would not otherwise have the opportunity to due to budget constraints. Schmid says that it was great to see all of the support for both events. “It’s not necessarily about driving the Ford it’s just coming out and supporting your school so it was good to see.”

Sports world loses two of the best By Bruce Penton Sports Columnist

Oh, oh. Bad things supposedly happen in threes. First the sports world was rocked when Muhammad Ali died at 74. One week later, hockey legend Gordie Howe passed on at the age of 88. Enough’s enough. Turn off the TV. Disconnect the computer. Let’s not hear any more bad news. Ali’s death from a respiratory ailment made both the front page and the sports section. And why not? He was the most famous person in the world for more than a decade in the 1960s and 70s, dominating the sport of boxing and effecting major social and cultural changes. Much of America reviled him when he adopted Islam and changed his name from Cassius Clay (“my slave name,” he called it) to Muhammad Ali. He made headlines, but few friends, when he refused induction into the U.S. Army during the Vietnam war. Convicted (but later overturned

by the Supreme Court), he was banned from boxing for three years, stripped of his passport and was out on bail but athletically idle for what would probably have been the three most productive years of his boxing career (age 25-28). But Ali came back, winning the world heavyweight title on three different occasions, starring in three of the most famous fights in history — the Fight of the Century vs. Joe Frazier (he lost); the Thrilla in Manilla vs. Frazier (he won); and the Rumble in the Jungle vs. George Foreman (he stunned the world by winning with his famous rope-a-dope strategy.) In the end, Ali was loved and respected the world over. He was the peoples’ champion. His nickname was apt: the greatest. Loved and respected are words to also describe Howe, Mr. Hockey, who was born in a tiny village in Saskatchewan and went on to dominate hockey in North America. Not only was he the best player in the NHL dur-

ing the 1950s and 60s, but after he retired and spent three years on the sidelines, he returned to the pro game to suit up with his sons Mark and Marty in the World Hockey Association. When the NHL added four WHA teams to the league in 1979-80, Howe and his boys were members of the Hartford Whalers and, remarkably, he played one more NHL season, wrapping up his storied career at the age of 52. The amazing Howe had 15 goals and 41 points in that final season. Howe was Canada’s most famous sports ambassador for four decades and having both him and Ali enter the great locker room in the sky within one week of each other was a stunner for the sports world. Memories of their days of glory will live on forever. • Dave Stubbs, on Twitter, on a favourite Howe story: “Gordie came into the dressing room, needing stitches for a pretty deep cut. He was in a rush. He told the doctor, ‘you don’t need gloves, just stitch me up. And don’t go

very far because the guy who did this will be coming in soon.’” Dwight Perry of the Seattle Times: “Next stop: Walla Walla? Checking the MLB transactions wire, the Marlins have released minor-league pitcher Jose Jose.” NBC’s Jimmy Fallon: “I saw that before (the June 6 Penguins-Sharks) game, members of Metallica performed ‘The Star-Spangled Banner.’ Yeah, hockey and Metallica — even Donald Trump was like, ‘That’s too white’” Norman Chad of the Washington Post, on Twitter: “LeBron James is already an all-time NBA great, but if he can win a title with J.R. Smith in the starting lineup, he is Mount Rushmorebound.” Writer Tom Callahan, reminiscing about Muhammad Ali’s co-operation with the media: “[Y]ou couldn’t get off the phone with him, even if the deadline was bearing down. You’d hand the receiver to your wife, write the story, and come back into the room two hours later and find

them still talking.” R.J. Currie of sportsdeke.com: “Khloe Kardashian said she’s not dating Giants receiver Odell Beckham Jr.; she was only flirting with him. Given the history of athletes with Kardashians, that’s a pass Beckham was wise to drop.” Janice Hough of leftcoastsportsbabe.com: “Someone hacked NFL twitter feed to announce falsely that Roger Goodell had died. Out of habit, Goodell will be punishing the Saints.” Alex Kaseberg again: “Snoop Dog threw out the first pitch at the San Diego Padres game. His pitch was high and outside. Just like Snoop Dog.” Brad Dickson of the Omaha World-Herald: “John Daly was spotted smoking on a golf course. It was reported he dropped an ash and his pants caught fire, but then someone realized the pants looked like that before Daly began the round.” Care to comment? Email brucepenton2003@yahoo.ca

Native Prairie week keeps native genetics alive

Calvin Daniels One thing I’ve held an interest in for years is the preservation of bloodlines, and plant lines in agriculture. That is why I respect the efforts of groups such as Rare Breeds Canada (rarebreedscanada.org). I understand certain breeds have risen to prominence today because they excel under current conditions

for raising them. But it also quite clear there are movements within consumers themselves and within the industry on a larger scale, seen clearly in the direction being taken by a number of restaurant chains, to look for product coming out of alternate production systems. Alternate production systems may well be better suited to animal breeds, or crop systems, which today are not widely raised. Maintaining important bloodlines and crop strains because they might one day find favour again just makes too much sense not to do. It is much the same thinking for me in terms

of native species. The world is lessened each time a species is lost. With extinction the ability to draw on the specific traits of the species are gone forever. We sometimes tend to forget our common crops today originated from wild species of plants at one time. Ditto for our domestic animals. Maintaining native species is very much a way to bank genetic material which may one day have properties we find a way to utilize in important ways, whether it is to transfer a trait which might introduce salinity tolerance into an existing farm crop, or whether some compound in the

plant is found to be medicinal. The potential of future science to utilize plants and animals today not seen as useful is certainly there, but can only be achieved if the plants and animals are preserved. Preservation of native species starts with awareness and having solid legislation to ensure protection, which is where government plays a role. So it is a positive each year when the Saskatchewan government proclaims Native Prairie Appreciation Week, this year June 12-18. A government release noted Native Prairie Appreciation Week is unique to Saskatchewan and is celebrated each year in

partnership with Saskatchewan Prairie Conservation Action Plan (SK PCAP). The week is dedicated to raising awareness and appreciation of our native prairie ecosystems. “Saskatchewan agriculture producers recognize the role they play as stewards of the land,” said Agriculture Minister Lyle Stewart in the release. “As stewards, they understand the importance of protecting our native prairie plant and wildlife for future generations by using sustainable land management practices.” “Native grasslands are an important part of our province, and that is why their conservation is a priority,” said Environ-

ment Minister Herb Cox in the same release. “Native prairie ecosystems sustain healthy fish and wildlife populations and contribute to the quality of life in Saskatchewan.” “Ranchers, producers and land managers provide suitable habitat for many species at risk as a result of responsible land stewardship,” SK PCAP Manager Kayla Balderson Burak said. “They play an important role in the conservation and sustainable management of these diverse prairie landscapes.” Who knows, the plant species such efforts protect today, could be important in ways not yet thought of in the years ahead.

Four locals taken in Bantam Draft By Christopher Lee Journal Reporter

The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League hosted their annual Bantam Draft on Jun. 2 with four local players being taken. Wadena’s Lucas Ochitwa was the first local taken off the board as the Melfort Mustangs drafted Ochitwa in the first round 11th overall. Ochitwa enjoyed a solid season with the Humboldt Bantam AA Broncos last season where he finished with ten goals and 15 assists for 25 points. Melfort Mustangs Director of Player Personnel Rick Oakes says they were really impressed with Ochitwa. “We liked the way he sees the ice, the way he moves the puck, plays with some confidence, shoots well, handles the

puck well, does a lot of positive things.” “We’re excited to have him as part of the organization and looking forward to watching him this year in Swift Current with the Legionnaires.” The local players had to wait another four rounds before the next one was taken as Wynyard’s Max Gudnason was drafted in the fifth round 49th overall by the Melville Millionaires. Gudnason also spent last season playing for the Broncos as he finished with five goals and 11 assists for 16 points. Gudnason also finished with 122 penalty minutes, which is part of the reason the Millionaires liked him says Head Coach and General Manager Devin Windle. “He’s so gritty, he plays the game on that edge and he’s

tenacious, and he’s tough to play against and he’s feisty… you want to make guys earn every inch that they get and Max is going to be one of those guys that really ensures that guys are going to have to work and fight for anything they get around him.” Windle says he spoke to Gudnason a couple of days after the draft and was really impressed with what he heard. “The very first thing he told me he goes I’m an agitator and I thought, this kid knows how he likes to play the game. I’m very excited to work with somebody who takes pride in his role the way that he spoke about it.” The Humboldt Broncos were on the clock immediately after the Millionaires and used the 50th overall pick to select Englefeld’s Cael Zimmerman.

Crop Report - May 31 to June 6 With 98 per cent of the 2016 crop in the ground, seeding has essentially wrapped up in the province, according to Saskatchewan Agriculture’s Weekly Crop Report. The five year (2011-2015) average for this time of year is 89 per cent seeded. Many producers have completed seeding operations and are working on incrop herbicide applications. Topsoil moisture conditions on cropland are rated as eight per cent surplus, 81 per cent adequate, nine per cent short and two per cent

very short. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as two per cent surplus, 81 per cent adequate, 14 per cent short and three per cent very short. There are areas, particularly in the northern regions, where moisture is needed to help crop establishment and hay and pasture growth. A warm week has resulted in excellent crop growth. Overall across the province, the majority of fall rye and winter wheat is in the shot-blade to heading stages, spring cereals in the emergence to tillering

stages, canola and mustard in the emerging to seedling stages, and pulse crops in the emergence to vegetative stages of crop development. There are reports of flea beetles and cutworms causing crop damage in some areas. Windy conditions have hampered weed control operations in many areas of the province. Producers are busy completing seeding operations and controlling weeds and insects. Follow the 2016 Crop Report on Twitter at @SKAgriculture.

Zimmerman was also a member of last season’s Bantam Broncos joining teammates Gudnason and Ochitwa as the third member of that team to be drafted. Zimmerman enjoyed a fantastic season as he finished third in the league in scoring registering 42 goals and 36 assists for 78 points. As a result of his fantastic season Zimmerman was drafted in the second round 44th overall in the Western Hockey League Bantam Draft by the Calgary Hitmen. Broncos Head Coach and General Manager Darcy Haugan says the Broncos are very happy that they were able to draft Zimmerman and sees a bright future for him. “He’s got a real good combination of everything. He played a big part with Logan (Barlage)

this year and really kind of has the total package. He can score, he’s physical, he can skate and that’s why Calgary took him in the second round, that speaks volumes.” A few picks behind Zimmerman, the Kindersley Klippers drafted St. Brieux’s Andrew Schaab 58th overall. Schaab spent last season playing for the North East Wolfpack where he racked up 16 goals and ten assists for 26 points. Unfortunately, Schaab’s coach in Kindersley was unavailable for comment at the time of printing. All of the players are considered under age and will take part in some of the teams’ camps but will be unable to make their respective teams this year and will return to play Midget hockey across the province.

Viscount news By Sandra Reid Correspondent I received a very interesting phone call recently, from Pete Sabo, who used to live in Viscount. He left in 1956 his home used to be five miles out of town. He would love to paint pictures of Bethania Lutheran Church, the barn that was just behind, and the Cemetary, it was too bad that I couldn’t help him with the pictures he is looking for. But I had a very nice conversation with him. George Gray and Chris Rault travelled to Clarke Lake to go fishing with Chris’s brother Ron and his wife Margaret from Debden. A great time was had by all and they really enjoyed the fishing. Chris says that Richard and Romona Farago pass

along a Hi to the community. There was 24 people that attended the Viscount Seniors Fundraising Breakfast. Armand Clavelle won the Lucky Loonie Pot. Workers were Chris Rault and Monica Palfy. Just to remind everyone that there will only be another two breakfast before the summer break. We had another Great Grandma pen pal reading on June 9th. Only two more reading days before the Great Grandma Tea. Best wishes to anyone that is under the weather, hope you soon feel better. If you have any news to share please call or email me. at 306-9442182 or elr.slr@sasktel.net Have a great week.

Keeping vehicles warm Conexus Insurance during the hot summer wants you to be safe on By Christopher Lee Journal Reporter With summer quickly on its way so too are hot vehicles. Keeping a vehicle cool in the hot summer sun can be an important part of summer so drivers do not have to get into a hot vehicle. Some of the biggest things vehicle owners can do to keep their vehicle cool includes parking in the shade or opening the vehicles windows. Both of these techniques provide the vehicle with the opportunity to remain cooler but one or both of these options is not always available. When those options are not available vehicle owners should look to sunshades or blankets as a way to keep the vehicle cooler. Putting a blanket or a sunshade over the vehicle can prevent the suns rays from penetrating the vehicle thereby cutting down on the amount of heat entering the vehicle with the blankets acting similar to shade. When entering the vehicle these preventative measures make the first few minutes in the vehicle much less hot for the passengers and driver. Upon entering the vehicle drivers have the option of opening the windows or turning on the air conditioner. There has been a great debate as to which is more fuel efficient

between the two but the Society of Automotive Engineers might have found an answer. In a study they conducted they noted that there are a number of factors that play into their findings but they noted that vehicles with lower drag such as a sedan could see a 20% drop in fuel efficiency compared to 8% for a sport utility vehicle when the windows were rolled down. Whereas when the windows were rolled up and the air conditioning was turned on, the SUV and the sedan registered very similar numbers as the reduction was 5-10%. Obviously speed plays a big roll in the amount of drag that a vehicle feels with the study noticing that at lower speeds the air conditioning might not be as effective as it is at higher speeds in comparison to having the windows rolled down. So when drivers hit the road this summer keeping cool is going to be an important part of that process. When possible park the vehicle in the shade or leave the windows cracked. Even place sunshades or blankets over some of the windows. When driving remember that it is not always less fuel efficient to turn on the air conditioning. Drive safe and have a good summer and please do not leave pets in the vehicles alone with the windows rolled up.

Plunkett news

By Deloris Sutherland Correspondent It was nice to hear that the home of Vi Wohlgemuth, who now lives in Linden, Alberta, was sold recently. It was the Micheal Pastor home. We welcome any new folks that are moving into town here. The gardens are coming along nicely, but we could use a good rain again. We wish all the graduates of last week’s Viscount graduation best wishes for their future plans. Several folks are away fishing and we also wish them good luck. Last week the pen-pal

grandma’s enjoyed their reading time with their students last Thursday. A t the end of the month they are having a great-grandma’s tea. It is real nice to see folks returning to their homes in Fort McMurray after that terrible fire. Some do not have a home to go to, but it sounds like they will be busy building homes for them. If you think women are the weaker gender, try pulling the blankets to your side. Humboldt residents Ed Drachenberg and Elaine (Kastuk) had Ed’s son Darcy

from Korea here visiting them for a week. A farewell was held for Helen Weeks who has now moved to Watrous. It was at the Plunkett Hotel. The Garth Brooks fans will be happy to know that he is hosting six shows in Saskatoon starting next week. Get well wishes go out to anyone ill and in the hospital. We wish them a speedy recovery. Anyone having any news for the paper is welcome to phone me at 306-944-4852 with it, as news is very hard to come by. Thank you. It is greatly appreciated.

Royals and Merchants combine for perfect 3-0 week By Christopher Lee Journal Reporter

The Watrous Royals and Bruno Sr. Merchants continued their Saskatoon Amateur Softball Association season with a combined three games last week. The Royals played their lone game of the week on Jun. 6 against the Saskatoon New Jack Swing. The Royals offense was on fire throughout the game as they piled up 14 runs en route to an

easy 14-5 win. With the win the Royals improve their record to 7-2 and climbed into first place in the Lisa Down Division. The Royals returned to action on Jun. 14 against the Saskatoon Select Storm before having a rematch against one another on Jun. 16. The Bruno Sr. Merchants had a pair of contests last week as they took on the Saskatoon Jr. Diamondbacks and

the Saskatoon Poly Plus Sr. Angels both on Jun. 8. The Merchants’ first game came against the Angels. It was a closely contested battle right down to the final out but the Merchants managed to sneak by the Angels 6-5. In the late game, the Merchants got a strong performance from their pitching staff as they limited the Diamondbacks to one run en route to a comfortable

7-1 win. With the perfect 2-0 week the Merchants improve their record to 4-3 and sit 1.5 games back of the first place Angels. The Merchants return to the diamond for a pair of contests on Jun. 15 as they take on the Delisle National Leasing Sr. Diamond Dogs in the early game and the Saskatoon Bridge City Sharks in the late game.

Meeting addresses concerns for new landfill By Becky Zimmer Journal Editor

React and rural municipal members came to LeRoy on Jun. 7 for round 2 of landfill meetings. Residents of the RM of LeRoy voiced their concerns at the first landfill meetings on Apr. 6 and brought them to the RM council meeting on Apr. 12. This meeting was to address some of those concerns. React CEO, Wendy Yaworski, has just returned from a trip around Alberta visiting their landfills where the intent was to get some ideas for “best practice solutions to concerns that residents mentioned. She says there were lots of great ideas that she brought back from the province who has the best standards by way of landfill management. With the first meeting discussing the engineering side of the landfill, Yaworski presented the final landfill operation plan. It was also decided that only the northern half of the landfill quarter will be developed to take some stress off the drainage system, says Yaworski. One of the major concerns at the Apr. 6 meeting was litter control, says Yaworski, and there were a lot of features of the landfill plan that would address that. Tiered tree planting around the quarter, twenty to thirty foot litter entrapment fencing around the perimeter of landfill cells as well as smaller entrapment fencing, a waste drop off building, and daily

Pet of the Week

waste retrieval around the perimeter and weekly along the road should reduce escaped litter, as well as consistent waste compaction, and litter pick up, says Yaworski. Any persons making a garbage drop off will be directed to an enclosed waste drop-off building before it is taken to the landfill working site. “The goal here is to keep the general public away from the working face and to keep the litter contained, says Yaworski. Loads from the general public must be properly tarped down to prevent loss of debris and visitors to the site will be fined if they do not adhere to this policy. Those in charge of the dump trucks taking garbage to the landfill cell will have a two way radio available to let landfill employees know that they are taking a load up to the working site. This will mean automatic compaction of the newly dumped garbage which will also cut down on loose garbage. Sites that Yaworski visited in Alberta also had an automatic shut down policy if winds get too high. Yaworski says they will be implementing that at the new landfill site as well as daily soil and site coverage and daily litter retrival. With the new additional waste control methods, Yaworski says there will be an increase in the annual per capita fee from $25 per person, to $35 per person. “This landfill will not be like the other ones, says Yaworski. At least three full time employees are needed at the new site and Yaworski says they intend to keep a handle on the waste, so they are unsure at this time how many employees they will

need for the task. “Right now from looking at other sites that I’ve seen, two full time people should do it but if we have to add more we will, says Yaworski. Dennis Siegel, did have some of his concerns addressed at the meeting but is still concerned about the effects the landfill will have on his property. He will be the closest neighbour to the landfill and he is still concerned about the population buffer put between the landfill and his 100 year old farm. He feels like he is not being given much of a choice and thinks the buffer should be larger than what he is being given. The roads around his property are not designed for heavy traffic and does not know who will enforce travel routes to and from the landfill. The presentation did make him feel better about some litter control issues. However, some concerns will not be alleviated until after the landfill is established and REACT holds up their operational ideas. “I really don’t think it’s going to be as clean as what they think it can be but it is a start...it’s one thing to say they’ll do it, it’s another thing to see them out there doing it. The meeting was closed to questions but RM of LeRoy Reeve, Jerry McGrath, says that was to encourage people to talk with councillors and REACT board members one on one. “We’ve had the open public meeting before, so this time we’d get REACT to explain to them the changes they made, and if there was concerns, they should talk to anyone of the councillors or REACT board personally. McGrath says that a lot of concerns that were brought up by the RM and by the residents have been addressed by REACT so he was happy with how the meeting went. He thinks people who attended were glad to see a more in depth plan for the operations which was a big concern. Yaworski says REACT is still open to anyone bringing concerns forward or wanting to see what they have planned for the landfill. The next step for the landfill will be approval from the RM of LeRoy and then REACT will move forward with operation plans and tender reports for the development of the site. The next RM of LeRoy council meeting was held on Jun. 14.

The Marysburg Royals continued their Saskatoon Senior Baseball League season with a game against the Outlaws on Jun. 7 in Saskatoon. The Royals smashed 11 hits over the course of the contest scoring six runs en route to a 6-4 win. Colin Bauml and Dean Jaeb combined to pitch six solid innings before Brett Doepker closed out the game in the seventh. Doepker ran into a bit of trouble in the inning as a pair of Royals runs contributed to two earned runs but Doepker and the Royals defense was able to hang on. With the win the Royals improve to 4-1 on the season and sit just a half game back of the first place Stallions. The Royals return to league action on Jun. 21 when they take on the Blue Jays in Saskatoon. The Royals also played a doubleheader against the Arm River Indians during the Holdfast SportsDay on Jun. 11. Originally the Royals were scheduled to compete in a tournament in Holdfast but after a team backed out the tournament format was changed to feature just the doubleheader. The Royals’ bats were red-hot over the course of the two games as they bashed out 11 runs in the first game en route to an 11-1 win and piled up 18 runs in the second game leading to a comfortable 18-3 win. With the pair of wins the Royals’ record including tournaments improves to 8-1, which includes a current eight game winning streak.

Saskatoon Minor Baseball League continued their season with games in many divisions. Watrous Midget AA The Watrous Midget AA baseball team had a pair of games this week as they faced the Athletics 1 on Jun. 7 and the Blue Jays Jax on Jun. 9. Watrous’ first game was an all out offensive battle as the teams combined for 37 runs with Watrous coming out on the wrong side of the score as they lost 20-17. In their second game Watrous’ pitching and

defense struggled again as they gave up another 13 runs en route to a 13-5 loss. Thanks to a pair of losses this week Watrous’ record falls to 5-6 as they sit 4.5 games back of first place Athletics 1. Watrous has a busy upcoming week as they played the Cards on Jun. 13 before battling the Blue Jays Badgers on Jun. 15 and the Blue Jays Jax on Jun. 17. Muenster Peewee AA The Muenster Peewee AA Red Sox enjoyed a week off this week as they return to action on Jun. 17 when they take on the Royals.

Bisons drop first game of season By Christopher Lee Journal Reporter

The Bruno Bisons continued their 2016 Saskatoon Men’s Baseball League season with four games this week. Their first matchup came against the Rhinos on Jun. 6. In a closely contested matchup it was the Bisons who came out on top to remain undefeated on the season as they snuck away with an 8-6 win. Returning to the diamond on Jun. 8 the Bisons battled the Cannons. Dawson Bender carried the load offensively for the Bisons as the Bisons defeated the Cannons 11-7 with Bisons pitcher Dawson Atamanchuk tossing a complete game in the win. In their third game of the week the Bisons faced off against the Wombats on Jun. 10. Yuniel Ramos pitched a solid game for the Bisons as he allowed just three runs en route to a complete game as the Bisons beat the Wombats 6-3. In their final game of the week the Bisons ran into a tough Selects team on Jun. 12. After a hot start that saw the Bisons reel off eight wins in a row the Bisons turned in a poor performance as they were blown off the field 14-2 by the Selects. Despite the loss the Bisons finished the week with a 3-1 record and improved their overall record to 8-1 on the season, good enough for first place in the league. The Bisons return to the field for a pair of games this week as they play the Outlaws on Jun. 14 and the Cardinals on Jun. 16. Friday, June 17, 2016 ECT 15
