David Leask brings Scotland to prairies By Becky Zimmer Journal Editor He came to Canada for a lassie but Scotland is still close to David Leask’s heart when it comes to his music. The Celtic folk artist was on tour across Canada with stops in Kelvington and Tisdale on Sept. 29 and 30. Leask says that there are many similarities between Scottish and Canadian music. Folk music is still important in Canadian musical storytelling and Leask says he can connect with that very easily. “Maybe it’s the wood and trees or
the landscape or simply the many immigrant stories that built the country but it felt like it was an easy place to be myself and make my music.” As a Scottish musician he naturally brings Scottish music and stories into his shows with “Celtic melodies of fiddles, accordions and bagpipes and the folk tradition of songwriting and storytelling,” he says, from Robert Burns to more contemporary singer/ songwriters. “I think it all became more amplified by me leaving Scotland and seeing the country from a different place.”
Both shows were really well attended and went well for Leask in different ways, he says. “I think everyone was out to have some fun and we did.” Coming through Saskatchewan on previous occasions, he only came through major centres, so Leask is enjoying coming through and seeing Saskatchewan’s rural landscapes. “There’s a warmth and ‘down to earthness’ that’s great to find,” he says. No matter if it is smaller shows or larger shows, Leask enjoys making that connection to the audience.
Leask even encourages hecklers because he gets to meet people that way. “The more I can get to know an audience, the more I will know where to take them on the musical journey throughout the evening.” Leask says he ‘meets people in the music,’ whether it is through a joke or story. He makes that connection with people by inviting them into the song. “Maybe it’s the wood and trees or the landscape or simply the many immigrant stories that built the country but it felt like it was an easy place to be myself and make my music.”
Curling Club brings Oktoberfest back to Watrous By Becky Zimmer Journal Editor It took 33 years to the day, but Watrous Oktoberfest came back to town on Oct. 1. Brenden Manz with the Watrous Curling Club said it was time to bring it back. “It was just something we thought we had to revive,” says Manz, since the German heritage of the area speaks for itself. Manz says it was two curling rink members that suggested they bring it back and with many other members being born in the years preceding the event, Manz is surprised it was not brought up for discussion sooner.
SEPTEMBER CARRIER PRIZE WINNER
DWAYNE ANDERSON
There are hopes to make the event an annual event again. Advanced tickets for the event sold a little slower than Manz anticipated but the crowd did reach that 250 people mark that Manz and organizers were hoping for. With harvest and the opening of the new Mosaic Stadium going on, it is hard to tell how many people will be willing to make it, says Manz. Humboldt’s Little German Band played through the night with a DJ taking over later in the evening. Food was all donated by the Watrous Co-op and Model Meats with a true German menu of bratwurst, sauerkraut, roasted potatoes, and soft pretzels, along with German beers available at the bar. The Watrous Rotary Club was also a big help for the fundraiser with running the bar and helping with the food.
Manz says that they would not have been able to pull it off without them. Ramjak Sports also donated items for a silent auction. Money raised is going towards a new ice chiller for the curling rink, a vital piece of equipment that has not been replaced since the building of the curling rink in the 1960s. They usually last 25 years, this one has lasted 66, laughs Manz. “A lot of the stuff falls on the backs of our members. When we can do a fundraiser like this, we can keep our memberships up and our prices down and still keep the rink very active.” Along with many other fundraisers for the rink, the club has reached their goal and the chiller will be installed within the month and in time for a new curling season.

Teams look for continued cross-country success By Christopher Lee Journal Reporter With cross country kicking off this week, several local teams are looking to build upon successful 2015 season’s that included provincial medals. The Lake Lenore Lancers enjoyed a highly successful 2015 season as they claimed the district championship and a 1A team provincial championship. The Lancers were lead by a number of solid runners last year including four who won district championships, and nine who finished in the top 30 at provincials. This year the Lancers consist of 33 runners from grades 5-12, with 30 returning from last year’s squad, including ten of the 12 who helped the Lancers claim provincial gold, and one new addition in the WeePee category. Having a large majority of the runners back from last year’s trip to provincials is going to be really beneficial, says co-coach Curtis Strueby, because they will not be overwhelmed by the moment when they get to provincials. “It’s a big event and sometimes young kids for the first time are going to walk in there and their eyes get pretty wide but now that the majority of the team’s been there before they can use that experience hopefully in a positive manner.
Strueby, who is joined by Naomi Prodahl on the coaching staff, says there are a number of runners who have set themselves up to have real solid year’s for the Lancers. Looking ahead to the start of the season Strueby says he expects the Lancers will once again have a very solid season. “They can push each other to do well and they push each other in practice as well. We have a good thing going and hopefully it can continue. What it takes is hard work and our kids are willing to do it, which is great. Approximately half an hour west of Lake Lenore on the 777 grid sits the Middle Lake Avengers who are looking to build upon a provincial medal of their own as they finished with the bronze in the 1A team category at last year ’s provincial championships. Last year the Avengers sent nine runners to the provincial championships and saw a number of solid runs as they had two runners finish in the top 30, four in the top 40, and seven in the top 50. This year the Avengers team leading into the pre-district championship consists of 25 runners, with 22-23 returning from last year’s squad. Avengers coach, Trevor Otsig, says having so many runners back from last year’s team should be a huge bonus because they
have the experience from having been there before that they can fall back on. Having the athletes do a lot of crosscountry running has been difficult early in the year, says Otsig, because a large majority of the runners are participating in other sports as well. “You can’t push them that hard because it’s hard on them right off the bat to start the year. Despite having a lack of training time with the runners Otsig notes that those runners are still getting great fitness training from their other sports. Otsig says he really likes seeing the students participate in so many different sports because it provides them with positive experiences and helps them in the academics as well. “They have to be organized and keep up with their school work because they are so busy and they are playing on a multitude of teams. Looking ahead to the start of the season Otsig says he expects that the Avengers will have a successful season. “They’re strong runners and I’m sure when it comes time to the meet next week we should do alright hopefully. The Avengers and the Lancers were not the only local teams to have success last season as the Wynyard Bears also claimed
a provincial medal, winning gold in the 2A team competition. Last year the Bears sent ten runners to the provincial championships with a number having solid races including three runners who finished in the top 30, four in the top 40 and seven in the top 50. This year’s Bears team features approximately 35 runners who are gearing up for provincials, with 30 returning from last year’s team, including just four of the ten runners who ran at provincials. Despite the low number of returnees, Bears coach, Reid Lozinski, says he expects that the runners who are back from last year’s squad will be able to draw on last year’s experience and it will help them be more ready for the races this season. “They’re going to realize that they’re not going to die at the end and they can compete with the city kids.â€? Looking ahead to this season, Lozinski says he expects the Bears are going to have a very solid season. “We’re in a good place‌ I think they’re going to do fine.â€? The cross-country season features the pre-district championship Sept. 29 (See below) in Kelvington and Strasbourg, the district championship Oct. 5 in Strasbourg and the provincial championship Oct. 15 in Delisle.
Lancers claim top spot at pre-district cross country By Christopher Lee Journal Reporter A busy fall season in high school athletics continued this week as the cross-country season kicked off with the pre-district championships in Kelvington and Strasbourg on Sept. 29. The hometown Vikings picked up the team championship in Strasbourg finishing with a meet low eight points, just one ahead of Wynyard Composite who finished second, and two ahead of Humboldt Collegiate who finished third.
The Wynyard Composite Bears also enjoyed a high level of success as they had nine runners finish in the top three of their individual races including first in the midget boys, second in the junior boys, midget boys, bantam girls and peewee girls and third in the bantam girls, midget girls, junior boys and senior girls. In total 15 of the 21 Bears runners who competed in the pre-district championship finished high enough in their races to qualify for the district championships.
In Kelvington, the Lake Lenore Lancers continued their strong run of form in cross-country running as they picked up the team title with a pre-district low of six points, four ahead of Middle Lake who finished second and five ahead of third place St. Augustine. The Lancers enjoyed some dominating performances at the championship, including in the senior boys division where they claimed first thru fifth. The Lancers also claimed top three finishes in a number of other

Thankfully, the real hockey season has arrived By Bruce Penton Sports Columnist The National Hockey League season, which takes about as long to unfold as it does a baby to grow from the time of conception to birth, gets under way this week and fans across Canada can only hope there’s more excitement this winter than there was in the just-completed World Cup of Hockey. Fans north of the border are generally happy that Canada, coached by Mike Babcock, skated off with the World Cup title, which shocked no one. The tournament’s best-of-three final was won 2-0 by Canada over a team from Europe — NHL players from countries other than Russia, Sweden, Finland and the Czech Republic — but there were empty seats in the Air Canada Centre in Toronto and TV ratings were reportedly abysmal. But the cream rose to the top, no doubt about that. Sidney Crosby, whose relatively blah play this time last year led some people to suspect he was on the downside of his career,
got his game into high gear last spring to lead the Penguins to the Stanley Cup, and then carried on brilliantly during the World Cup to solidify his status as the game’s best player. He was the tournament MVP, although a strong case, too, could have been made for Brad Marchand of Boston, who skated on a line with Crosby and scored the winning goal in the last minute of the clinching game. Barring injury, Crosby, now 29 and fully in his prime, should once again win the NHL scoring title, but he will have competition. Fans in Western Canada salivate at the thought of a full season for Connor McDavid of the Edmonton Oilers, and fans in Ontario can’t wait to see if Auston Matthews of the Leafs, the No. 1 pick in this summer’s draft, is the real deal or if the hype machine got overactive, as it often does in the Centre of the Universe. What might happen over the next nine months will be more closely analyzed in coming columns, but one thing that
won’t happen is a clamouring by fans for another World Cup. Man, that was a boring two weeks. The regular season, when they start playing for real, can’t get here soon enough. • Greg Cote of the Miami Herald: “Team Canada beat Team Europe to win the World Cup of Hockey. Now if Canada could only end that pesky 23year Stanley Cup drought.” • RJ Currie of sportsdeke. com: “The phrase ‘I am going to put you to sleep now’ refers to: a) a Tempur-Pedic mattress slogan, b) a Bill Belichick interview.” • Dodgers broadcaster Vin Scully, about what he will do in retirement, from SI.com: “When you’re (retiring at) 89 and they ask you what your plans are, I’m going to try to live! … I’m looking for a much smaller house and a much larger medicine cabinet.” • Headline at TheKicker. com: “Cocaine embarrassed to be found with Greg Hardy.” • Comedy writer Alex Kaseberg, after Pats QB Tom Brady was spotted sunbathing nude
in Italy with his supermodel wife while serving his Deflategate suspension: “In a related story, players all over the league began deflating footballs.” • Dwight Perry of the Seattle Times: “Mets signee Tim Tebow hit a home run on the first pitch he saw in the Florida Instructional League. Witnesses swear they saw sparks coming off Tebow’s homemade bat, Wonderboy.” • Greg Cote again: “Kevin Garnett announced his retirement, surprising analysts who thought he’d retired years ago. Garnett’s prime retired in 2007.” • Norman Chad of the Washington Post, peering inside the diary of QB Tom Brady, sitting out a four-game suspension: “Gronk’s got my back — he’s been sticking pins in a Garoppolo voodoo doll; just got a text that the kid sprained his shoulder.” • Brad Dickson of the Omaha World-Herald: “Reportedly some Olympic swimmers may have had an advantage due to a current in the pool. As far as
advantages go it’d be tough to top the blowhole in the top of Michael Phelps’ head.” • RJ Currie again: “The World Curling Federation decided all curling brush heads must use one material, come from the same source and be one colour, based on exhaustive tests. Call it a broom with a review.” • Another one from Kaseberg: “A German goalkeeper was arrested after letting in 43 goals in one match. He was charged with loitering and impersonating Donald Trump at the debate.” • Another one from Dickson: “ Northwestern has a reputation as an academic powerhouse. My favourite play on Saturday night occurred when the team called timeout to correct the referee’s grammar.” • Dwight Perry again: “Ferrari claims it’s coming out with the fastest convertible ever. No word about top-end speed, but your wallet goes from $2.2 million to zero in just 3.5 seconds.” Care to comment? Email brucepenton2003@yahoo.ca
Crop Report for the Period September 20 to 26, 2016 Despite the weekend rain, producers were still able to make progress with harvest. Seventy per cent of the 2016 crop is now combined and 22 per cent is swathed or ready to straight-cut, according to Saskatchewan Agriculture’s weekly Crop Report. The five-year (2011-2015) average for this time of year is 79 per cent combined. Regionally, harvest is furthest advanced in the southwest, where producers have 79 per cent of the crop in the bin. Seventy-seven per cent of the crop is combined in the southeast, 61 per cent in the east-central region, 65 per cent in the west-central region and northeastern regions and 64 per cent in the northwest. Some producers in the southern regions have completed harvest. Ninety-eight per cent of the field peas, 93 per cent of the lentils, 68 per cent of the durum, 67 per cent of
the spring wheat, 61 per cent of the canola and 20 per cent of the flax have been combined. Rain was general throughout the province, with areas in the west-central and northwestern regions receiving lesser amounts than other regions. Most areas reported receiving at least 25 mm of rain or more. The greatest amount of rainfall, 63 mm, was reported in the Moosomin area. The Carnduff area received 56 mm, Limerick 38 mm, Webb 30 mm, Foam Lake 51 mm, Bethune 42 mm, Nipawin 33 mm, Biggar 13 mm and Meadow Lake 9 mm. Provincially, cropland topsoil moisture is rated as 17 per cent surplus, 81 per cent adequate and two per cent short. The recent rain has slowed harvest in some regions, as topsoil was only just starting to dry out enough to support equipment. Areas around Porcupine
Plain, Tisdale and Arborfield are reporting that 49 per cent of cropland acres have surplus moisture at this time. Areas around Canora, Preeceville and Foam Lake are reporting that 36 per cent of cropland acres have surplus moisture at this time. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as seven per cent surplus, 87 per cent adequate and six per cent short. Strong winds have blown around some canola swaths, resulting in shattering losses. Standing water from the recent rain also caused some crop damage this past week. Bleaching, sprouting, fusarium and earth tag are causing grade loss. Producers are busy harvesting, hauling bales and controlling weeds. Follow the 2016 Crop Report on Twitter at @SKAgriculture.
Who can be trusted when science and money mix
Calvin Daniels By Calvin Daniels Agriculture Columnist Science should be the one thing we can trust. Research should be carried out for the sake of exploration, and the results published, whether the results are positive or negative.
However, science is increasingly being seen as managing to find the results those paying the bills on the research are hoping for. While that may be the cynical view of things, it seems science often does its best to support the view because widely differing findings on the same topic often come to light, leaving the public having to determine who they should trust. The result, many simply doubt the creditability of science results in general, and that is scary since who should we trust if not the results of well-done scientific research? The most recent ex-
ample of the situation surrounding the different results science can put forward which only serve to confuse revolves around glyphosate, and whether the widely used herbicide is a carcinogen? Or, more simply put, does glyphosate cause cancer in humans? The question hit the press when an International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) panel, released material in March 2015 which indicated glyphosate was probably carcinogenic to humans. IARC is a division of the World Health Organization and given that creditability, the report carried a lot of weight,
and that sent ripples throughout the world in terms of the safety of glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup herbicide. As an example, following the release of the IARC report the European Union came close to banning glyphosate. One can imagine what such a ban could have done, in particular what impact it might have had on exports of grains and oilseeds from glyphosate treated crops in other countries destined for EU markets. But we should hope the IARC work was carried out using sound research, and the results were backed up by data.

However, now another has come up with differing results in terms of whether glyphosate causes cancer. In a paper published online recently in Critical Reviews in Toxicology, (www.tandfonline. com) four independent panels of experts looked at the relevant research on glyphosate and whether it’s carcinogenic. The group of 16 scientists, from Canada, the United States, Denmark, Brazil and the United Kingdom and other countries, concluded glyphosate is unlikely to pose a carcinogenic risk to humans. And therein lies the
problem. Whether you are a government official in the EU, or a consumer heading to the store, when putting your mind to the question of glyphosate treated grain safety, you are first left to determine whose research and results you feel best about trusting. And, there will always be that element of doubt based on the differing conclusions. It is such doubts which leave many simply tuning out scientific results, and that leaves them open to being swayed by other influences that should not be a trustworthy as good science research.

They won against Aberdeen 103-41. On Sept. 23 Chris Rault’s niece; Rhonda; from Debden, and her daughter had a very nice visit with Chris and George. On Sept. 25 Chris and George went to visit George’s niece Melody Patterson and her husband Ed and family of Regina. They had a very nice visit and went and watched some hockey.
Then on Monday, Chris and George took a trip to North Dakota for a few days which they also enjoyed. League soccer approaching a finish in Horizon for 2016 By Christopher Lee Journal Reporter It has been a busy September in the Horizon Central Athletic Association as teams from around the division competed in district soccer play. Junior Girls The 2016 season kicked off on Sept. 12 with the Lake Lenore Lancers visiting the Middle Lake Avengers and the Cudworth Huskies visiting the Muenster Cougars. In Middle Lake, the Avengers opened defense of their district championship in style as they cruised to an easy victory over the Lancers 4-1. In Muenster, the Huskies and Cougars battled back and forth in a tight contest with the Cougars sneaking away with a tight 3-2 win. The teams all returned to action on Sept. 14 with the Cougars visiting the Lancers and the Avengers visiting the Huskies. In Lake Lenore, the Cougars and Lancers battles in a match, that would eventually be worth four points instead of two thanks to a rain storm that washed out their second match of the year on Sept. 23. The game was a tight battle between the two teams with just three goals combined as the Lancers snuck away with a 2-1 win. The Avengers continued their early season dominance as they piled up eight goals in an 8-0 destruction of the Huskies, that improved the Avengers’
record to 2-0. Week two kicked off with all four teams in action on Sept. 21 with the Lancers in Cudworth to take on the Huskies and the Cougars in Middle Lake to take on the Avengers. In Cudworth, the Lancers and Huskies engaged in a shootout as they teams combined to score seven times, with the Lancers edging past the Huskies 4-3. The game in Middle Lake finished with the same score as the Avengers snuck past the Cougars to push their undefeated start to the season to three games. The final games of week four featured the aforementioned rain out of the Lancers and Cougars game and the forfeit of the Huskies who were scheduled to take on the Avengers. Week three kicked off on Sept. 26 with the Cudworth Huskies visiting the Lake Lenore Lancers and the Middle Lake Avengers visiting the Muenster Cougars. The Cougars once again gave the Avengers a tight contest but were unable to come up with the victory as they Avengers emerged victorious by the same 4-3 score they won their first contest with. In Lake Lenore the Lancers and Huskies were also competing in a tight one goal contest as Cudworth looked for their first win of the season but they fell just short as the Lancers edged the Huskies 2-1. The four teams rounded out their week

three schedule on Sept. 28 as the Cougars visited the Huskies and the Avengers visited the Lancers. The Avengers concluded their undefeated run through the regular season with another convincing victory as they blew past the Lancers 5-0. The Huskies wrapped up their regular season picking up their first win of the season as they nipped the Cougars 3-1. With the regular season now over, the 6-0 Avengers and the 4-2 Lancers get set for a rematch with the district championship on the line on Oct. 3, while the Huskies and Cougars, both 1-5, have the opportunity to play for third place the same afternoon. Junior Boys The junior boys division featured the same four teams as the junior girls division and kicked off Sept. 8 with Middle Lake in Lake Lenore and Cudworth in Muenster. Week one featured a pair of blow-outs as the Huskies blitzed the Cougars 8-0 and the Lancers blasted the Avengers 7-1. The teams returned to the field for week two with the Lancers in Cudworth to take on the Huskies on Sept. 12 and the Avengers in Muenster to take on the Cougars on Sept. 13. After a pair of blow-outs in week one the week two schedule kicked off with more of the same as the Huskies routed the Lancers 10-1 and the Avengers filled the net against the Cougars, winning 7-0. Week two wrapped up on Sept. 15 with the Huskies at the Avengers and the Cougars visiting the Lancers. The season continued seeing routes as the Huskies smoked the Avengers 9-1
and the Lancers blew-out the Cougars 8-1. After a few days off the teams returned to the field on Sept. 20 with Muenster in Middle Lake and Cudworth in Lake Lenore. For the first time this season the games were highly competitive as the Cougars snuck by the Avengers 4-3 and the Huskies edged the Lancers 5-3 to remain undefeated on the season. The teams returned to the pitch on Sept. 22 for the penultimate game of each teams season as the Huskies hosted the Avengers and the Lancers visited the Cougars. The games once again reverted to blow-outs as both Lancers and Huskies romped their way to 6-0 and 11-0 victories respectively. The teams wrapped up their regular season schedule on Sept. 27 with the Lancers visiting the Avengers and the Huskies hosting the Cougars. The final week of the regular season followed the same pattern as nearly every other week during the season as the games finished with a combined score of 11-1 as the Lancers beat the Avengers 7-0 and the Huskies beat the Cougars 6-1. At the conclusion of the regular season the Huskies claimed the top spot in the league finishing with 18 points and will host the district final against the Lancers who finished second with 12 points, while the Cougars travel to Middle Lake to take on the Avengers in an optional third place game with both games scheduled for Oct. 4.

Plunkett news By Deloris Sutherland Correspondent With fall arriving, our tress are wearing their fall colours and they sure look nice and are beautiful. Hope that they stay on for a while. The Roughriders had a good game on Sept. 24 and won it and it was great to watch. On Saturday evening we attended a lovely roast beef supper at the Plunkett Community Centre to help Jody; Wendy
Bishop’s daughter celebrate her 40th birthday. It was a surprise party for her that her mother had arranged. A lovely supper was enjoyed by their family and many came from all around. Following the supper a DJ came with his music and the young kids had a ball dancing and playing games. Dennis Credgeur went to Meadow Lake to help look after his grandchildren while their parents are away. The men that were gone elk hunting
are back now with their elk and had good hunting. Renee Clavelle and her family attended a wedding in Saskatoon Sept. 24 for her granddaughter Kristen, daughter of Patrick Clavelle of Coronach. We women are like cell phones. We like to be held and talked to but push the wrong button and you’ll certainly be disconnected. Several houses in town are getting fixed up and Plunkett folks welcome
Carving out culture in Manitou Beach By Becky Zimmer Journal Editor Culture Days came to Manitou Beach with Four Feathers carver, Clayton Cave, sharing the art of soap stone carving. The event was hosted by the Little Manitou Art Gallery in which Four Feather is situated with Cave’s partner, Sarah McKen, who also held a clay sculpting session. Cave had plenty of pieces of soap stone to choose from and the carving session ran from 10 am to 4 pm on Oct. 2, which McKen says was well received. McKen was struck by one
young man who walked away with a carving that he gave to his mother. McKen says he really connected to carving. This is their fourth experience with Culture Days and McKen says the support SaskCulture gives covered the cost of the materials for the event and made it very easy for everyone to take part. There is a real community effort to get people involved in Culture Day activities and that keeps McKen and Cave coming back every year to provide different events.
Soap stone is a lovely medium that anyone can pick up and get into quite easily, says McKen, so it was a good place for people to start trying to carve. There is plenty of arts and culture to get involved
any new folks that are moving into them. School children are back to school again and we wish them a safe and good year. Birthday greetings go out to anyone having a birthday this month. Get well greetings go out to anyone ill and in the hospital. We wish them a speedy recovery. Anyone having any news, please phone me at 306-944-4852. Thank you.
Pet of th the he W Week
in across Canada, especially right here at home, says McKen. “There is an artist in each and every one of us and we just have to be brave enough to let her out and give her an opportunity to play.

WESEEN: Wade William Oscar Dec 19, 1951 - Sept 22, 2016 Mr. Wade Weseen, 64, of Lake Lenore, SK, passed away on Thursday, September 22, 2016, at Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon, SK, surrounded by his family. He was born to William and Eunice (nee Buckton) Weseen in Spalding, SK, on Wednesday, December 19, 1951, as the second of five children. Wade attended Lewis Lake School to grade five and from grade six onward he attended Naicam School where he met his future wife, Valerie, and then graduated in 1969. Wade went on to receive his B.S.P.E. and B.Ed. from the University of Saskatchewan in 1974. That same year he was married to Valerie (nee Amundson) on May 4th at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Naicam, SK. They were blessed with two daughters, Jasmine (1977) and Jillian (1979). Wade worked as a teacher and coach at Lake Lenore for 33 years. His career was a colorful one. He committed much of his time and effort into building one of the strongest allround high school athletic programs in Saskatchewan with an emphasis on female sport. Highly respected in his field, provincial titles and national recognition eventually found him. Wade was elected president of the Saskatchewan High School Athletic Association in 2005, and presented with their distinguished Merit Award in 1996. He continued to enjoy farming throughout his teaching career and into retirement. Wade leaves behind his beloved wife Valerie; his daughter Jasmine, her husband Kevin, and their children Anaka and William; his daughter Jillian, her husband Wellingtone, and their daughter Anabel; brother Mark; brother Ross and his wife Catherine; sister Gayle; and sister Kathy. He also leaves behind in-laws, nieces and nephews, as well as an amazing extended family found in his local community and the greater area through 30 plus years of coaches, players, and friends across the province. Wade was predeceased by his parents William and Eunice; and by his brother Dale. A celebration of Wade’s life was held at St. Anthony’s R.C. Church, Lake Lenore, on Friday, September 30th, 2016, at 1:00 p.m., with Pastor Kragbe Legre and Father Anthony Atter presiding. Lunch followed at the Lake Lenore School Gymnasium. Interment took place later that afternoon at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Naicam. Wade’s dying wish was for his grandchildren to afford the opportunities that education allows as he held it in the highest regard. Memorial gifts in Wade Weseen’s memory can be made in the name of Valerie Weseen, P.O. Box 238, Lake Lenore, SK, S0K 2J0. Special thanks to the doctors, residents and nursing staff at Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon who took great care in seeing Wade through to the end. He was 63 years of age. Harry was born to Mike and Mary (nee Kocharo) Stadnyk in Humboldt. His early childhood was spent in Carmel. He loved his farm and his land right to the end of his life. For many years, Harry was employed with the Canadian National Railway until failing health necessitated him to retire. An avid outdoorsman, Harry loved to hunt; it was like a holiday to him. Innumerable hours were spent over the years hunting deer, moose, elk, and even bear. He always wanted to get the “Big One”. In his leisure time, Harry loved playing Kaiser and watching wrestling. He was a dye-hard wrestling fan when it came to WWF, especially the Hart Boys and Hulk Hogan. Harry will be lovingly remembered by his family and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Mike and Mary (nee Kocharo) Stadnyk; and by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. BARCLAY: Marian May 31, 1928 - Sept 22, 2016 Marian Barclay was born on May 31, 1928, as the eldest child of Neil and Ragnhildur (Ruth) Lamont. She grew up on a farm near Kandahar, SK. In the mid 1940’s her family moved to Lanigan, where Marian finished high school. She attended Normal School in Saskatoon and received her teacher training. She taught in rural schools in the Lockwood and Lanigan areas, and later in the town of LeRoy. On October 17, 1951, Marian married a young local farmer, Robert (Bob) Barclay, and they began their new life on the farm east of LeRoy. They raised their family of four boys on the farm and lived there for over 40 years. In the early 1990’s Bob and Marian semi-retired from farming and moved to the Lamont family home in Lanigan. After Bob’s passing in 2011, Marian later moved to Caleb Village in Humboldt, where she resided until her sudden death on September 22, 2016. Marian was actively involved in church and community committees in both LeRoy and Lanigan over the years. She joined the Eastern Stars in 1950 and served as the Worthy Matron of the Lanigan Chapter several times. Marian’s passions in life included teaching, painting, writing and thoroughly enjoying her family. As a young woman, she began painting and continued to develop her natural talents by taking a number of art classes through the years. Her home displayed many of her paintings and other creative works. In her later years she really embraced her love of writing, composing many poems and stories. Just recently she completed her greatest work, a full length historical fiction novel, which the family will proudly publish as a cherished family heirloom. Marian will be lovingly remembered by her four sons and their families: Brett (Lucy) of Regina and children Robyn (Rod) and Rachel; Glenn (Shirley) of Biggar and children Kristina (Chris) and Danielle; Ross (Heather) of LeRoy and children Bennett (Skylar) Larson and daughters Emilya and Avery, and Kyle (Sarah) Larson; and Greg (Vicky) of Camrose, AB, and daughter Sarah (Sam); brother Stan (Nancy) Lamont of Stony Plain, AB; sister-in-law Fay (Ed) Schroeder of Lethbridge, AB; and numerous nieces and nephews. Others taking part were: Greg Barclay, urn bearer; Debra Spokowski and Jennifer Sande, scripture readers; Robyn Barclay, soloist; Stan Lamont, saxophone soloist; Howard Lamont and David Moore, ushers. The eulogy was delivered by Glenn and Greg Barclay, and a video tribute was presented by Greg Barclay. The memorial book attendant was Dee Robertson, and Ron and Evelyn Reierson were the memorial donation table attendants. An honor guard was formed by members of the Eastern Star. Interment followed at the LeRoy Public Cemetery. Memorial donations may be directed to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Westminster United Church or the Eastern Star Special Project Fund. League soccer approaching a finish in Horizon for 2016 Continued from page 6. Senior Girls The senior girls kicked off their 2016 season on Sept. 13 with the Lake Lenore Lancers traveling down grid 777 to take on the Middle Lake Avengers and the Muenster Cougars traveling down highway 5 to take on the Humboldt Mohawks. The game between the Lancers and the Avengers was a barn burner that went down to the wire as the Lancers emerged victorious 3-2 in a shootout. The game between the Cougars and the Mohawks also finished 3-2 but this one in regulation as the Cougars pulled out the win. Week one wrapped up on Sept. 15 with the Avengers visiting the Cougars and the Lancers hosting the Mohawks. After dropping a tough decision the week prior to the Lancers, the Avengers rebounded wonderfully as they knocked off the Cougars 2-0. The Mohawks also rebounded from an opening game loss as they blew out the Lancers 8-1. After enjoying the weekend off the teams returned to the field for the opening of their week two schedule on Sept. 20 with the Cougars and Lancers facing off in Lake Lenore and the Mohawks and Avengers facing off in Humboldt. Both games were tight defensive battles as the four teams combined for just three goals with the Mohawks defeating the Avengers 1-0 and the Cougars beating the Lancers 2-1. The teams wrapped up week two on Sept. 22 with the Cougars looking to avenge their lone loss on the season against the Avengers in Middle Lake and the Lancers and Mohawks battling in fight for second place in Humboldt. The Cougars responded to their lone loss with a solid defensive game limiting the Avengers to very little offense in a 1-0 win, while the Lancers topped the Mohawks with a 3-2 win. With cross-country kicking off in Horizon week three was limited to just a single game on Sept. 27 when the Avengers and Lancers renewed acquaintances in Lake Lenore and the Mohawks made the short trip to Muenster to play the Cougars. The Lancers continued their strong run of games as they cruised past the Avengers 3-0, while the Mohawks dropped a 1-0 decision to the Cougars, which moved the Lancers into second in the league. With just one game remaining in the regular season the hold the top spot in the standings with a record of four wins and one loss, four points clear of the Lancers who sit in second with two regulation wins, one shootout win and two losses, with the Mohawks breathing down their neck just two points behind thanks to two wins and three losses. The Avengers hold the final spot in the standings with one win and four losses. The teams wrapped up their 2016 season on Oct. 4 with the Avengers hosting the Mohawks, who need a win to keep their league championship hopes alive, and the Lancers visiting the Cougars. With just one game remaining in the season the Cougars have claimed the top spot and home field advantage for the league final on Oct. 13 but will have to wait until the final games have been played to find out their opponent. The final game is extremely important for both the Mohawks and the Lancers as the Mohawks need a win, in a shootout and a Lancers tie, or a Lancers shootout loss and a Mohawks regulation win to tie the Lancers for second place in the league. The Mohawks hold the edge in the tiebreaker thanks to a 10-4 advantage in goals during their two games against one another. Whoever finishes third in the league will get home field advantage for an optional third place game against the Avengers on Oct. 13. Senior Boys The senior boys kicked off their 2016 season on Sept. 12 with the LeRoy Lightning in Muenster to take on the Cougars and the Middle Lake Avengers in Humboldt to take on the Mohawks. The Avengers opened their 2016 season with a bang as they piled up five goals in a 5-3 victory of the Mohawks, while the Cougars played a tight defensive game as they snuck by the Lightning 2-1. Week one of soccer action wrapped up on Sept. 14 with the Lightning visiting the Avengers and the Cougars hostNotices / Nominations
ing the Mohawks. Both games were decidedly one sided as the Mohawks and Avengers shut out their opponents by scores od 5-0 and 9-0 respectively. The teams returned to the field for week two action on Sept. 21 as they wrapped up the first half of the season with the Lightning in Humboldt to take on the Mohawks and the Avengers in Muenster to take on the Cougars. After blitzing the opposition the week prior the Mohawks and Avengers continued winning with relative ease as the Mohawks beat the Lightning 8-1 and the Avengers beat the Cougars 4-1. After having the weekend off the teams returned to the pitch for the start of week three action on Sept. 26 with the Lighting visiting the Avengers and the Mohawks hosting the Cougars. The Avengers high powered offense continued rolling as they piled up a season high ten goals en route to an easy 10-3, while the Mohawks got past the Cougars 5-2 to remain just a single game behind the Avengers for first place. The teams wrapped up week three action on Sept. 28 with the Cougars hosting the Lightning and the Mohawks visiting the Avengers in a battle for first place. With the two teams in a battle for first place the Avengers left no doubt as to who the better team was as they crushed the Mohawks 7-1, while the Cougars got by the Lightning 3-2. Through five games in the season the Avengers lead the league with an undefeated 5-0 record, two games ahead of the Mohawks who sit at 3-2, with Muenster (2-3) and LeRoy
(0-5) rounding out the field. The teams wrapped up their 2016 season on Oct. 3 with the Lightning visiting the Mohawks and the Avengers hosting the Cougars, with the Avengers looking to complete and undefeated regular season. With just the one game remaining in the season the league final has been set as the Avengers will host the Mohawks on Oct. 12, while the Cougars

By Christopher Lee Journal Reporter Football is well underway in the Saskatchewan High Schools Athletic Association as teams continued their season on Sept. 29 and 30. 1A 6-man Conference 1 Looking to build off their first win of the season the Viscount Vikings hosted the winless Aberdeen Crusaders. After piling up a whopping 166 points in their first three contests the Vikings’ offense exploded, even for their lofty standards, as they scored 103 points, nine more than the Crusaders scored in their first four games, during a 103-41 win. With the win the Vikings get their record back to .500 as they sit 2-2, two wins behind the first place Carrot River Wildcats and the Hudson Bay Riders. Approximately 30 minutes east on highway 16, the Lanigan Lazers were also in action as they looked to keep pace with the Vikings. The Lazers’ week four matchup was a tough one as they went head-to-head with the unbeaten Wildcats, whose offense has scored at least 48 points in each game this season. The Lazers defense did a good job of limiting the Wildcats offense to a season low 46 points but they were unable to keep pace as they fell 46-33. With the loss the Lazers’ record falls to 1-3 on the season and leaves them in a tie for fourth place with the Porcupine Plain Bears in the six team league, just one win behind the third place Vikings. The Lazers and Vikings return to the field for week five action on Oct. 5 with the Vikings traveling to Lanigan to take on the Lazers. 2A 6-man Conference 1 After running roughshod over the league during the first half of the season the Wynyard Bears kicked off the second half of their season on Sept. 30 at home against the Watson Raiders. After scoring 184 points in their first three games and outscoring their opponents by an average of 44 points a game the Bears continued their hot stretch with their most convincing win of the season to date as they mauled the Raiders 82-12. The loss by the Raiders keeps them
winless on the season as they sit in fourth place in the four-team league with a 0-4 record. With the win the Bears improved their record to 4-0 on the season as they sit in first place one game ahead of the Watrous Wildcats. The Bears return to action on Oct. 6 when they take on the Preeceville Panthers. The Panthers meanwhile, hosted the Wildcats on Sept. 30 as the Wildcats looked to stay one game behind the Bears for first place. The Wildcats’ offense continued to improve as they scored a season high 48 points in a 48-14 route of the Panthers. With the win the Wildcats record improved to 3-1 and leaves them just one game behind the Bears for first place. The Wildcats return to action on Oct. 6 when they welcome the Raiders to town. 2A 6-man Conference 4 The Birch Hills Marauders hosted the Rosthern Huskies in a battle of unbeaten teams on Sept. 29 as both teams looked to take over sole possession of first place. The Marauders offense continued their great start to the season but their defense let them down as they gave up a seasonhigh 70 points en route to a tough 70-57 loss to the Huskies. With the loss the Marauders record falls to 2-1 on the season and leaves them in a tie for second place in the six team league, one win behind the Huskies for first. The Marauders return to action on Oct. 6 when they host the Big River Rebels. The Wakaw Warriors, who lost to the Marauders the week prior, looked to get themselves back in the win column when they traveled to take on Ahtahkakoop First Nation on Sept. 29. The Warriors defense got back on track after a tough week against the Marauders that saw them give up 60 points, as they limited Ahtahkakoop to just 19 points as they cruised to an easy 59-19 win. With the win the Warriors record improves to 2-1 and moves them into a tie for second, one game behind the Huskies for first. The Warriors return to action on Oct. 6 when they travel to Rosthern to take on the Huskies.
