Great crowd treated to great weather at Wadena fair
The Wadena Vohon Ukrainian Dance Club was one of a number of organizations who entered floats into the Wadena Town and Country Fair parade. photo by Christopher Lee By Christopher Lee Journal Reporter Wadena hosted the Town and Country Fair on Aug. 26-28. It was a busy weekend full of many events for the whole family including a fireworks display, a pancake breakfast, a parade featuring 28 groups, a demolition
derby, gymkhana, chuck and chariot races, and a slow pitch tournament among many more activities. Fair committee chair, Sara Sobchyshyn, was very pleased with how the weekend turned out noting they saw nearly 1,100 people over the course of the weekend. “The town puts so much effort into getting the grounds together and so it’s nice to see that everybody can come out and enjoy it.” One of the biggest relief ’s for Sobchyshyn was the weather, which cooperated nicely
Baseball
over the course of the weekend. “Wadena’s used to being rained out every year for our fair so since we moved it to August it’s just been a blessing that the weather has cooperated with us and we can actually proceed with the big events.” One of the big successes over the weekend was the parade, says Sobchyshyn, which saw a spike in the number of commercial floats from supporting businesses this year. “We had lots of compliments on the parade. It was very well organized by the girls and very well supported which is nice to see.” Hosting the fair was a community effort as over 100 volunteers pitched in to
make the fair a success, which is a very humbling feeling says Sobchyshyn. “Because it means something to everybody to have this event continue to go on for the years to come for everybody to enjoy. Everybody puts in an effort to make it the success and the weekend that it is.” Having such a large crowd of people come out for the weekend was really encouraging and encourages the committee to continue working hard to make it bigger and better for the coming years, says Sobchyshyn. “It makes the person want to go and do it again and… put more enthusiasm and continue to build the community spirit for all of our citizens and the surrounding area.”

Plunkett news By Deloris Sutherland Correspondent The farmers are all busy with harvesting and bailing hay and straw bales as well. Evelyn Shoemaker attended a memorial service in Saskatoon recently for the late Mrs. Louise Cole (Elaine Shoemaker’s mother). She also visited at the homes of Carolyn and Carl Carduner and Jerry and Elaine Shoemaker. While at Jerry’s she got to visit with her
granddaughter and girls from Nova Scotia. Word has been received of the death of Mrs. Kathleen Balentine (Cox) of Calgary at the age of 93 years. Mrs. Balentine grew up in Plunkett and her mother is a former manager of the Post Office. Plunkett folks send their get well wishes to Mrs. Myrtle Clavelle of Saskatoon, formerly of Plunkett, who is in the Saskatoon hospital after falling and

breaking her hip bone. Plunkett folks also send their get well wishes to Myrtle’s son Bob Clavelle who is also in the University Hospital. Plunkett folks send their deepest sympathies to the Balogh family of Edmonton on the recent passing of David at the age of 63. He was the son of Ambrose and Liz Balogh formerly of Plunkett and then Watrous. He was married and they have three children who are grown up. The Plunkett Birthday Group held a Birthday Party for Judy Shoemaker on Aug. 24 at the Plunkett Community Centre. A couple games of knowledge were played and enjoyed. Then a lovely luncheon followed with the opening of a basket of household gifts. Tea and coffee were also enjoyed by
several ladies. We wish Judy a very happy birthday. David and Lyla Muench accompanied by Terry and Dennis Wiesner visited Dave’s brother Cyril and his wife in Creighton recently. Also, Mrs. Edyth Ptleomy from Dinsmore recently visited David and Lyla Muench. This is what most people say, “I wish I lived in a world where mosquitoes would suck fat instead of blood. Plunkett folks welcome any new folks that are moving into our town. Get well wishes go out to anyone ill and in the hospital. We wish them a speedy recovery. Anyone having any news, please phone me at 306-944-4852. Thank you kindly.

Bisons see mixed results during 2016 season By Christopher Lee Journal Reporter It was not the season the Bruno Bisons were hoping for. One year after winning the provincial championship silver medal the Bisons found themselves knocked out of provincials after the round robin thanks to a tough draw. They were in the same pool as the two time defending provincial champions and last years provincial bronze medalists, as well. “We knew it was going to be tough coming out of the pool in provincials and we ended up losing a close game with Unity to get eliminated so it sent us home earlier than we would have liked but all-in-all I don’t think it was a bad showing,” said Bisons catcher Jeremy Sibley. The Bisons set themselves up for a great playoff run thanks to a 15-5 regular season record and a second place finish in the standings. After a bye in the first round, the Bisons swept the Selects in the quarterfinals, setting up a semi-final match up against the defending league champion Brewers who finished with
an identical 15-5 regular season record. The series was a hard fought one but in the end the Bisons fell in a sweep against the Brewers, who went on to defend their league championship. “They have solid depth with pitching and they’re a good team,” said Sibley. Despite the tough loss the Bisons enjoyed a better season in league play improving from a 14-7-1 record and an exit in the quarterfinals a year ago to the aforementioned 15-5 record and a loss in the semi-finals. “We started a little bit better in the league playoffs and provincials is typically our focus, which is why we’ve had some quick exits in league playoffs but second round’s nice. It would have been nice to go to the final but two good teams were there,” said Sibley. The Bisons also incorporated a number of new players into their lineup including Humboldt’s Dawson Atamanchuk, St. Benedict’s Tanner Brockman, and Watson’s Curtis Buhs. Sibley says they provided great depth to the team and
added some energy to the team as well. “Dawson pitched a little and both of them relived me back catching which was nice and then… (Buhs) came in and hadn’t played ball in a few years and he threw really well throughout the year and actually provided some offense at the plate too.” Looking ahead to next season the league is changing the format to separate teams into divisions with teams of similar skill sets so the Bisons, who are being placed in “A” Division, will be playing against mostly upper echelon teams making their regular season schedule tougher next season. Despite the tough schedule Sibley likes the Bisons’ chances next season and says they should be just as competitive as they were this season. Sibley says that making the provincial and league finals next year would be nice. “The league title actually might even be more difficult to win than the provincial title so I’d like to make the league final. It’s not a given but we’ll try to get there.”
Royals season hits peaks and valleys By Christopher Lee Journal Reporter The Marysburg Royals enjoyed an up and down 2016 season. The Royals won their sixth consecutive regular season pennant and went all the way to the league final before bowing out in extra innings in the fifth and decisive game but saw their trip to provincials end prematurely after finishing the round robin 1-3. Despite the tough trip to provincials and the tough loss in the league final longtime Marysburg Royal Curtis Strueby was still quite pleased with his teams season. “We played quite well throughout the regular season and in tournament play. We had an injury or two in the middle of the year that really hurt us.” Strueby notes that at provincials a couple of their pitchers were slowed by some injuries but said the team was still quite confident heading into the tournament. “Every team has faced that adversity in the past and we weren’t to worried about it and then going into provincials we just weren’t ready to play.” Strueby says it was tough on the core group of players who have been around for the last several years because they are not as used to having to fight so hard at provincials. “We’ve been lucky enough to win and be in the final the majority of the years the past few years and this year it just, we got down and we couldn’t really find it after that.” Strueby says it was not any one part of their game that let them down but it was all facets from defense, to offense, to pitching, and noted it was just one of those weekends. “That’s going to happen from time to time.” The Royals continued to struggle a little after provincials as they failed to play their best baseball down the stretch but Strueby noted they had a quick talk after one of their games that got them back on track.
“It was like this isn’t us you guys we need to wake up and we just kind of came out of that little talk that we had with an attitude like, ‘hey, we’re here to prove that we are not that team that had played that weekend.’” That attitude proved effective once they got to the playoffs as they cruised through the first round and continued fighting despite trailing two games to one in the final and by two runs in the seventh, and eighth innings before making comebacks. “We knew our backs were up against the wall missing all these guys and the guys that were there really put it together and it was as gutsy an effort as I’ve ever seen since I’ve been involved with the team.” The Royals were aided by three Muenster Midget AAA Red Sox call ups who played very well for the Royals, which Strueby says bodes well for the future if the Red Sox continue to play baseball in the area. “It’s kind of nice knowing that we’ve got a young crop of young players in the area that if they’re around will be willing to step right in and play. So it’s good to see and it’s again a pride thing and hopefully they can come right in and have a positive experience with the team.” As the season wore on it got more and more difficult for the Royals to field a team due to a number of things including losing a couple of players who returned to college, and a few players who have to help with harvest, which is understandable, says Strueby. “We had an injury or two from provincials that guys were still out with so we were down to ten players pretty much for the majority of the playoffs.” Despite the tough end to the season the Royals did manage to claim their sixth straight regular season pennant, which is something Strueby says the Royals take great pride in. “I know myself and all the guys on the team we want to
win that every year. We do know that once mid-August rolls around that we’re going to be in tough to get players… so we try to really go hard at that every year and we managed to win it again this year.” Strueby would like to thank everyone who helped the season go smoothly for the Royals, saying it takes a lot of helping hands to run a baseball team, including sponsors and everyone involved with the team. Volunteers who helped with the concession, came out to ball camps, contributed to steak nights and other financial support was greatly appreciated.

Fighting the market part of selling in Canada
Calvin Daniels By Calvin Daniels Agriculture Columnist
World markets for agricultural products are fragile things, as Canadian producers are keenly aware. It seems strange that in a world many still go to bed hungry most days that food products don’t flow with almost no bar-
riers, after all feeding the population should be a paramount concern. It’s clearly not the situation though. Politics trump feeding the hungry, and the profitability of farm producers. We saw that with the tariff wars of European Union and United States coffers a decade or so ago. We saw it from the extended trade barriers built when Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) was found in a lone Canadian cow back in 2003. While the initial border closures might have been justified in light of a lack of understanding regarding how widespread BSE might be, science soon came out on the side of the case not being a threat
to consumers, but many borders hide behind BSE as a trade barrier. It’s all rather intriguing in a world where politicians outwardly champion the concepts of free trade among nations, but many quickly hide behind anything they can to bolster their position in trade. In Canada we have a rather narrow focus, sell farm products abroad. Our land base allows for huge production, and our small population consumers are a small portion of that production. We have had the foresight in the past to create a few key supply managed systems for dairy and poultry products to ensure production profits and consumer food safety
and supply assurances. That said those sectors are eventually to be sacrificed to the idea of free trade deals. I for one am not happy with the idea of my ‘fresh’ milk arriving from Mexico. But back to the fragile nature of world markets, and how they impact farmers. China recently agreed to delay introducing stricter rules on shipments of canola from Canada. It had appeared new rules were imminent which would have increased costs in terms of Canadian canola making it into Chinese markets. China had stated the tougher import rules were necessary to prevent the spread of blackleg disease

from Canadian canola into Chinese crops of rapeseed (the base for canola). The Chinese have suggested tightening the allowable limits for foreign matter in ships. Industry participants say the new standard, under which China would reduce the amount of foreign matter allowed per shipment to no more than one per cent from 2.5 per cent which would increase cleaning costs. But, just a day before the new standards were due to go into force, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Chinese Premier Li Keqiang announced Canada would be able to continue with the current canola export regime, while a longer-
term solution was worked out. That they stepped back from the edge of new rules at the last minute suggest a compromise deal will be forged. China is Canada’s top export market for the oilseed, and China is a huge importer. It accomplishes little to impact the relationship dramatically. But that it came down to the wire shows again how a market can be threatened based on changing a rule long in place, and not likely to stay closer to the status quo than the Chinese postured. That just brings into question whether there was a threat to Chinese rapeseed, or was it simply political sabre-rattling?

A break in the weather over the past few days has allowed farmers to make good harvest progress. Eighteen per cent of the 2016 crop has been combined and 32 per cent is swathed or ready to straight-cut, according to Saskatchewan Agriculture’s Weekly Crop Report. This is ahead of the five year (2011-2015) average of 17 per cent combined for this time of year. Regionally, harvest is furthest advanced in the southeast, where producers have 34 per cent of the crop in the bin. Twenty-five per cent of the crop is combined in the southwest, 12 per cent in the east-central region, eight per cent in the west-central and northeastern regions and five per cent in the northwest. Ninety-two per cent of winter wheat, 64 per cent of field peas, 40 per cent of lentils, 10 per cent of durum and spring wheat and seven per cent of canola have been combined. Fifty-two per cent of canola has been swathed. Rain was reported earlier in the week, with the northern and central regions receiving the majority. The Nipawin area received the most rain—57 mm. Provincially, cropland topsoil moisture is rated as 16 per cent surplus, 79 per cent adequate and five per cent short. Crop districts
around Kindersley and Tisdale are reporting surplus moisture on 43 and 46 per cent, respectively, of crop land. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as five per cent surplus, 81 per cent adequate, 11 per cent short and three per cent very short. Pasture conditions across the province are reported as 17 per cent excellent, 60 per cent good, 20 per cent fair and three per cent poor. As a result of a wet and humid haying season, it is estimated that four per cent of forage acres will be left unharvested, with the majority of those acres being in the west-central and northeastern regions. The majority of crop damage last week was due to prolonged flooding and disease. There are reports of higher incidences of sclerotinia in canola, fusarium in wheat and durum, and bleaching of cereals and pulses, in comparison to other years. Producers are busy with harvest. FemFierce capture FemSport silver medal By Christopher Lee Journal Reporter Three local women teamed up to capture a FemSport silver medal at a recent competition in Regina on Aug. 20. St. Benedict’s Meredith Anderson teamed up with Chelsea Wytrykusz, and Nora Gies both from Middle Lake to form team FemFierce as they competed in their first ever FemSport competition. FemSport is a women’s strength and fitness competition that challenges women in a number of disciplines including speed, strength, endurance, and agility. The women competed in a number of events including an obstacle course, box jumps, tire flips, kettlebell lift, tire drag, and inverted rows. FemFierce were quite successful in a number of competitions including inverted rows, where Wytrykusz finished first, and tire flips, where Gies finished third. “It definitely shows our hard work. It is impressive for sure. Our team’s quite diverse,” said Anderson. Over the course of the day Anderson says they knew that they were competing really well noting that they all set personal bests in the box jump but admitted that they did not check to see where they stood in the standings
making the announcement of the silver medal a bit of a surprise. “We were super excited. There was some jumping up and down and a couple happy little tears just because we were pretty proud of ourselves with setting a goal and going through with it.” It was a lot of hardwork, says Anderson, who noted that they spent a year training to get ready for the competition but she admits that despite all the hard work nothing could truly prepare them for the competition once they got there. “The obstacle course, we did that one very first in the day and it amazed me how a minute and a half of work could totally gas a person as much as it did. I was literally gasping for breath at the end of it… it’s amazing how much it kind of still kicked your butt a little bit once you actually were giving it your 110 per cent in the moment.” The amazing thing for Anderson at the competition was the camaraderie between all of the competitors noting that despite competing against one another everyone was very supportive of each other as well.
“Everyone was so amazing to cheer everyone on. It didn’t matter if it wasn’t your family or friend that you were cheering for there was just people cheering.” FemFierce team member Gies also enjoyed a solid afternoon in the individual category as she claimed a bronze medal in the master’s class as well. Looking ahead, Anderson says she would like to continue competing in FemSport competitions and says the trio might also look to enter into other competitions similar to FemSport including Spartan races. “We’ve been looking at dates on that and just to stay consistent with our workouts and strong throughout the year so that whatever we decide to do as our next goal next year and we have probably a couple that we’ll be super strong going into it.” Anderson would like to thank her family and friends for their support, especially during the competition and throughout their journey as FemFierce embarked on their road to a FemSport silver medal.

more than ever Buy now. The best time to make a good decision is now. If you conduct a review of your farm operation, and discover you could save money, increase yield or work more efďŹ ciently, why wait to make that happen? Some growers look at corn prices, or weather, and think doing nothing is safe. Sometimes, doing nothing can cost you money.
