~Valedictorian address ~ by Amanda Wuchner Good afternoon to parents, teachers, special guests and fellow graduates. Gathered here today we have so much to be grateful for, we are the first graduating class of the new Humboldt Collegiate Institute, we have been taught by knowledgeable staff and have family and friends who are with us here today, celebrating our accomplishments. The future lies ahead of us, infinite and full of possibilities, with that we are able to dream. The present is where we find ourselves, anxious, excited and apprehensive for what is to come. Being unsure we must remember to be grateful for what and who we have in our lives. But the past, it has made us who we are today. We have all experienced changes and transitions which has allowed for growth in the future. When I was 13 years old, I was diagnosed with a giant brain aneurysm. I didn’t know if I was going to live to start high school, never mind graduate and stand here before you today as valedictorian. Having gone through the experience of expecting every day to be the last one lived, it made me truly thankful for what I have in my life. Today, in our lives we have much to be grateful for, the new school, a supporting community, incredible friends and many influential people in our lives for without them we would not be here today. Scattered throughout the audience are people who have had such an astonishing impact on our lives. Those people are our parents. For the past 18 years they have stood beside us and encouraged us to be the best we could possibly be. They made us meals, did our laundry, cleaned up our messes
and drove us everywhere we needed to be; then they continued to teach us those essential life skills. Sometimes we would fight, get frustrated and disobey you but still you loved us which means more than anything else. From you we’ve learnt honesty, patience, forgiveness, and love. As infants when we first started talking we couldn’t fully express what we wanted to say, but somehow managed to get across to our parents what we wanted. Now years later; it is even harder to express ourselves as we are so grateful for being able to have you as a part of our lives. So to the parents, thank you. To t h e teachers and staff that have influenced our lives we owe our thanks also. From patiently teaching us lessons in various subjects to working well past the end of the work day to help with sports and extracurricular activities, the teachers have been here to help us from the first day we entered the doors of the school. In 10 years it’s doubtful that we are going to remember the formula for quadratic equations or be able to recite the stages of mitosis but what we will remember is the perseverance
and dedication that the teachers have taught us throughout our schooling careers. They helped us from our homes to kindergarten, from Grade 8 to Grade 9 and now they are sending us off on our own, confident that we are able to be contributing members of society. From our fellow classmates, we have learnt the value and lessons of friendship, respect and kindness but most importantly to stand up for what we believe in. Whether it had been talking about if Chevy or Ford was better while in the commons area or in history class debating issues such as capitalism. Everyone stood by their opinion and was able to discuss why they thought they were just in thinking so. Being able to do that is the most valuable skill because by being able to stand by your opinion, others can be positively influenced and change can be made in the world. This past year especially has been one of change and transitions. As a school we’ve changed teachers, classes, our school symbol, technology, and buildings. Needless to say it took a lot of work! The new school and the tran-
sitions it underwent were not always smooth sailing. There were delays and as a result we did not end up in the school until the beginning of second semester. It was a rough start, not everyone knew where to go, some classes weren’t completely unpacked and the bathroom sinks would not work for anyone! That first day though was full of joy and relief as after several years of work, we were in the school and had finally made it. Today we face that same sense of joy and relief as we have finally made it to our graduation celebration. Throughout our high school careers in some way or another we have all changed. It may not have always been a positive experience that altered us, but from that moment in our life, we learnt a lesson and now possess the knowledge we gained from it and are able to move forward in our lives. Things don’t always work out perfectly but the point is to just keep going with it because with perseverance comes success. Our grad quote (as mentioned before) is ‘Dream as if you will live forever. Live as if you will die today.’ So with that I ask that you dream of endless possibilities and be grateful, living each day to the fullest. We are only blessed with one life so let’s live it. The time has come where we find ourselves at a crossroads. Whether you journey on to a different community or country remember the roots and dreams that were conspired here at Humboldt Collegiate Institute. I am honored to have been able to stand here before you, the graduating class of 2012 and wish the utmost happiness and success that each and every one of you deserves.
~ Salutatorian address ~ by Garrison Berger Hello and Welcome to all of you fine people here today to help us celebrate our Graduation. It’s not every day your favorite sons and daughters, or students graduate from high school. My name is Garrison Berger. My job is to thank all of you for making that happen. Firstly, I want to thank all of the teachers here today for putting up with us through our high school careers. Through all of our whining and complaining, constant question asking, and most of all, thank you for believing we are smart enough to graduate. We’ve known it for years. All of my fellow graduates should find your favorite teacher and thank them. And then find your least favorite and thank them even more for not giving up on you when you didn’t try very hard in their class, because you thought they were out to get you.
Thank you to all of the parents as well, for helping us through all situations in high school. Thank you for all your wisdom and your ability to know all the answers, even if they weren’t necessarily correct. Parents and Teachers are so influential on our lives, but those that have the most influence on us are our peers. This brings me to my next point. Thank you to all of my classmates on stage with me right now. Most of us have been together since Grade 9. It has been a long and bumpy ride, but it looks like we came out on top. Some more on top than others, but we made it nonetheless. I truly hope all of us are successful in our future endeavors. Thank you, and good luck. I am honored to welcome all of you to our ceremonies today. Take care, and God Bless.
