Yard site in the mid 70s.

Yard site in 2015.

The farm of Alvin (Al) and Francis (Fran) Wallington started from meagre beginnings. Al brought his bride home to the half-section 16 kilometers northwest of Tisdale in 1950. Al started out farming crops that included wheat, barley and oats. He also had some animals on the farm that included two cows, pigs, chickens and some horses to help with the chores. “[In 1951] we had to have cattle and pigs in order to survive, because you didn’t sell enough grain to live on. I had a family,” said Al. “In 1951 it was just as important to have some income from a lot of different sources as it was just from grain,” said Lionel Wallington, Al and Fran’s second oldest child. There was no power until 1953, no passable roads until the grid was built in the mid-50s and no running water until 1960. Al started farming with a W40 steel wheel International acquired from the trade of his breaking plow, a 14’ seeder and soon a new 27 Massey Combine. While Al was in the field, Fran was busy with the housework and keeping their growing family fed. “She was the housekeeper, cooked meals. [We] used to have two big meals a day when she was

doing it,” said Al. “That was pretty much full time work.” Although Al said they didn’t have much to start with, they did have great neighbours and friends helped to make life bearable. People really had more fun then, compared to today’s hectic society. Over the years there were five children who were born to the farm from 1951 to 1961. Donna (Fritshaw) was the first to arrive, then came Lionel, Shar

(Olliver), Chris (Keays) and Sandy (Tokaruk). Poor Lionel, the only boy, got the worst of everything. The kids went to Hanover School, a three kilometer walk south of the farm. In 1963, Hanover closed and from then on the kids were bussed to Tisdale. Although the animals were needed in the beginning, the family sold all of them in 1970 and became a straight grain farm. Harvest 15 years ago.

Part of the Wallington harvest crew.

Above: New seeder. Right: Dane Wallington and the original W40 International. Below: Combing 25 years ago.

Left to right: Matt, Jenn, Dianne, Lionel, Bert and Al. Continued from page 2 Lionel was always going to be a farmer and started buying land in the late 60s with lots of help from mom and dad. “We were very fortunate that we could buy land because lots of areas you couldn’t,” said Al. “Dad and I never expanded fast at all, just consistently,” said Lionel. Lionel married Dianne in 1976 and moved two kilometers to the Claxton yard. Al and Fran stayed in the original yard and the partnership continued to prosper and grow. Three children were born to Lionel and Dianne. Matt (1978), Adrienne (Ivey) in 1980 and Jennifer (Uteck) in 1982. The girls have gone on to farm in other parts of the province even though they said that they could never marry farmers. Adrienne is in Ituna and Jennifer is in Swift Current. Along with the kids on the farm there was a hired hand that helped keep the farm running smoothly. Bert Lyttle has been with the family for 22 years and continues to work on the farm. Lionel and Dianne’s son Matt bought his first land in 1993, but went to university for a few years

and had a two year stint with Dupont in Alberta. Matt returned in 2003 to farm full time. He and his wife Julia now live where Al and Fran lived. Today, the farm has transformed into a successful multi-generational farm with 6,400 acres of canola, oats, barley and wheat. Matt does all the managing of the farm while Lionel said himself and Al do the guiding. “[Matt] does a lot of the managing on the farm now, he does a very good job with that,” said Lionel. This year is Al’s 69th crop and he continues to be an active member of the farm. Farming has changed a lot in the last 65 years since Al started farming on his own and it has changed again since Matt joined the crew. Lionel said in ’03 they never had semis, grain carts, hopper bins, or direct till drills back then. Both Lionel and Al said the soil has become a lot better now that they don’t summerfallow, have continuous crops and reduced tillage. The family’s claim to fame now is the best fed harvest crew around with Fran and Dianne and now Dianne and Julia, bringing hot meals to the field that money couldn’t buy in the best restaurant in the city.

When many farmers are herding livestock and fixing fences, Ron Weighill is looking after animals on his farm that would fit on the end of his finger. Since the early 1970s, leafcutter bees have been a major part of the Weighill family farm located 24 miles north of Carrot River. Leafcutter bees are an important part of the alfalfa crop and make up half of the Weighill business. “The bees make for good diversification,” explained Weighill. “They help in the lull of grain farming and

give us some stability.” Between 800 and 900 acres of alfalfa is grown on the farm with a bee hut situated every four to five acres. With 10,000 bees making up one gallon of bees and 1,700-1,800 gallons of bees needed on the farm, it amounts to a lot of bees working hard to pollinate the crop. “We put the bees out on July 1, timing it with the alfalfa bloom,” said Weighill. At the end of each growing season the bees lay larvae in a cocoon before the adult bees reach the end of their life cycle. The larvae is

kept just above freezing in storage over the winter and extracted from the nesting matter before being put into nesting trays and later transported to the fields to start the new season. “ Th e b e e s a r e a crop onto itself,” said Weighill. “Each year we double the number of bees and sometimes we triple the number. We keep our breeding stock and sell the excess.” Much of the Weighill bee crop is sold to the Western United States where diseases such as chalk brood threaten the bees. Continued on page 5

A buzzing business Submitted by Terri Eger

Continued from page 4 Bee production is a labour intensive operation and requires the assistance of a full-time employee and additional seasonal staff. The entire Weighill family helps out as well, including a daughter who is still at home finishing her Grade 11 and two daughters who are away pursuing post-secondary education who come home when they can. “The bees make things very interesting, he said. “We are trying to pollinate the alfalfa and look after the bee crop at the same time. The alfalfa crop does not fare well in wet conditions and excess moisture has made everything more challenging in the recent past. While the current spring has been dry, the farmer said he’s almost afraid to hope for rain in the event they get too much. “I guess in the end Mother Nature will make the final decision. Weighill puts in 3,600 total acres

of crop with canola and wheat making up the majority of his cropland with some oats and flax rounding things off. The farm got its start near Carrot River when Weighill’s grandpa Hamilton was relocated to the area from Tobin Lake. “When Tobin Lake was flooded in about 1962 or ’63 they moved here and started farming, he said. After farming on his own for about 10 years, Mr. Hamilton invited his

daughter and her husband to go into business with him. The young couple made the move from Saskatoon and continue to live on the original farm site where they raised their family. Today, Ron and his wife live in Carrot River and make the third generation

of the family to work the land. While there has always been grain produced on the farm, there has been a significant shift over the years from raising horses and cattle in the past to the tiny bees that make up half the farm today.

Fifth generation Mooney working the land Written by Terri Eger When Alf Mooney took the long trip from Ontario to Star City in 1917, it was the beginning of a venture that would span five generations and counting. In the spring of 1917, Alf traveled by rail to put in a crop in the area that was just being

settled. He had purchased a full section from the CN Railway to start his farm. Alf went back to his family in Massey, Ont. for the majority of the year, returning to harvest the crop that fall. The following spring, Alf and his son Edgar would return to

the area with a load of horses to plant the second crop and were later joined by his wife Maude and the rest of the family. Together the couple would raise nine children, with many of their descendants remaining in the local area. “He was a big man and she was a hard-working, little lady who ruled the roost, laughed Vaughn Mooney, Edgar’s son, making him part of the family’s third generation involved in farming. “They farmed with horses, breaking the land and putting in the crops, Vaughn said of his grandparents. “They started growing oats and barley, much of what I grow now. In the early years the farm raised beef and dairy cattle with Vaughn’s grandma doing the milking. Over the years, Edgar raised dairy cattle and pigs and while Vaughn had pigs for a while when he was younger, the farm has been strictly a grain operation for a number of years. Vaughn currently lives one mile north of the original homestead during the summer months but has been spending the winter in Texas for the past 12 years. Today Vaughn’s son Shawn works the land with the help of his son Tyrell, who would make the fifth generation Mooney to work the land. The farm grows wheat, oats, barley, flax, canola and peas over 3,500 acres. “When I was 13 my dad pulling me out of school to help with the seeding, he recalled. “I’ve put in 57 crops over the years. While farming has its ups and downs, it’s a life Vaughn is happy with. “We’ve had our good years and our bad years but overall it’s been good, he said. Being his own boss was always a positive for the famer. “It was nice not having anybody telling me what to do, he said with a chuckle. Being able to share his family history and pass the farming tradition to the next generation is also important. “There are three generations working together now, he said.

Riemer Family Farm, White Fox

Submitted by Taryn Riemer, information provided by Curtis and Donald Riemer

The Riemer family first came to the White Fox area in 1947 when Henry and Sabina Riemer moved to a farm about five kilometres northeast of the village. Henry bought two quarters and started farming. Sabina and Henry had four boys: Donald (Don), Gerald (Jerry), Brian and Robert (Bob). The boys grew up helping their dad farm and tended to the Red Poll cattle, which are a meat and dairy cow. Around 1959 Don and Jerry started farming more on their own, but had help from their dad and brothers. Brian moved away for work and Bob stayed around to help farm as well. “We kind of helped back and forth, we had a second combine so sometimes [Henry would] help us when things were ready and when he had something that was ready we’d work back, said Don. Eventually, when Don and Jerry had kids, they branched off into their own operations with their kids. Don farmed with his oldest son Curtis, while Jerry and his son Jason farmed together. Bob took over the farm that their dad had after he passed away. In the beginning of the three brothers branching out, they helped each other when the other needed. But once they each got going they became separate operations. During the winter months, Don would work in logging, construction, the oil patch and pulp mills to get extra money. Don always lived in town, but he had a yard site with a shed on it about 13 kilometres northeast of town. Curtis had his first crop in 1979, bought his first quarter of land in 1982 and in 1984 he

bought land from Don that was four kilometres northwest of Don’s yard site. Curtis put power there that year and in the spring of 1985 he moved out there with a trailer and started building his farm. The only items on the land when Curtis moved to the yard were a garden and an old lumber shed that both belonged to Don. Curtis had to get water, power and sewer all set up. When Curtis and Don started farming on their own they had a 4430 John Deere tractor, a 4020 John Deere tractor, a John Deere press drill, three-ton trucks for hauling grain and a 7700 John Deere combine. Curtis and Shari got married in June of 1986 and Shari then joined him on the farm. Along with the grain Curtis also started out with four Black Angus cattle and some chickens. Shari and Curtis had three children: Triston (1992), Taryn (1993) and Kole (1995). Shari had a hairdressing shop in White Fox, Klassic Kuts Beauty Salon, which kept her busy. The three kids all helped out on the farm throughout the years. Whether it was working with the cattle, helping in the field or making meals, they were busy. The kids were also in 4-H for several years, which worked out well since they had lots of cattle to choose from. Continued on page 11

Riemer Family Farm, White Fox

Submitted by Taryn Riemer, information provided by Curtis and Donald Riemer

Continued from page 9 During the first years on the farm Curtis worked construction jobs in order to save up money for the farm. Eventually, when he had enough grain and cattle, he was able to stay home. Shari worked at her shop until 2012 when she retired. She has been working on the farm ever since. Today, the farm has grown a lot from the humble beginnings. Kole started farming in 2011 and Triston’s fiancÊ Todd Gallais began farming with the Riemers in 2014. Kole has bought a house eight kilometres southwest of Curtis’ yard site and Triston and Todd have bought a house three kilometres northeast of White Fox. Taryn is living with mom and dad while she works in Tisdale. The Riemer farm consists of 7,000 acres of grain and forage land, 2,000 acres of pasture land and 750 head of Black Angus cattle. They have two air drills, three combines, a grain cart, semis, tandem trucks, two four wheel drive tractors, two track tractors, five smaller tractors and numerous other pieces of equipment needed for grain farming and to feed cattle. Kole has strictly been farming since 2011. Since 2010 Triston has went away for university during the year and would come back for the summers to help with the grain operation and head the cattle operation. Taryn would come home and help

when she could and still does today. Curtis said over the years he has seen his fair share of ups and downs. There was a drought year in 1988, a drought in 2002, BSE in 2003 and frost in 2004. In the last five years it has been extremely wet, but in the last two years the cattle have been doing very well. Curtis said that having both cattle and grain works best for him. “That’s why we’re in both of them, we get enjoyment. We get the peacefulness of the cattle and the excitement of the grain, said Curtis. Curtis said that in some years you need to take from the grain to help the cattle and in others years it is the opposite. There is now three generations farming on the Riemer farm and both Curtis and Don think it’s great to see. “I think it’s great. Good to see three generations working alongside each other. You get the energy of the young and the knowledge of the old and I get to be the referee in the middle, said Curtis. “It’s nice to see them picking up the interest in it, interested in the farming end of it. They’ve learned their lessons well; they know what they’re doing. They both are quite capable, said Donald. Curtis said that the future for young farmers looks bright and he is looking forward to seeing the number of young farmers continue to grow in the industry.

Creating a more advanced fungicide with more advanced results was no accident.

After years of extensive research in the lab and—more importantly— in the field, we’ve developed our most advanced fungicide ever: new Priaxor® fungicide. It helps canola and pulse growers maximize their crops’ yield potential thanks to the combination of the new active ingredient Xemium® and the proven benefits of AgCelence®.* The result is more consistent and continuous disease control. And greater returns for you. Visit agsolutions.ca/priaxor or contact AgSolutions® Customer Care at 1-877-371-BASF (2273) for more information. *AgCelence benefits refer to products that contain the active ingredient pyraclostrobin.

When the Second World War came to an end in 1945 there was a large number of young men looking for work back home in Canada. The CCF provincial government in Saskatchewan at the time developed a co-operative farm program that would enable soldiers to work together to build a successful farming operation. Bohdan (Buck) Borsa was among the soldiers who joined the program. Originally from the Meskanaw/Yellow Creek area southwest of Melfort, Buck began working land with his fellow veterans northeast of Carrot River in the Smokey Burns district. “They sent the war vets out to clear the land and make something for themselves,” explained Buck’s son, Doug, who farms the land today. Ten veterans were given half a section of land each and worked together on the co-op farm pooling resources in the form of labour and machinery. The early farmers had backbreaking work clearing the land of trees, tilling the soil for the

first time and planting seeds they hoped would grow. “I’m sitting here looking out my tractor window and it’s wide open,” Doug said in a phone interview from the field. “Those guys were sent to the middle of a forest and they did it all. It was solid bush and they were sent here to scratch out a living.” According to the Encyclopedia of Saskatchewan found online, “The impulse for co-op farms grew out of the democratic socialist vision of the CCF government, first elected in 1944. Taking a bold leap forward in co-operative ideology, the CCF fostered the establishment of co-operative farm communities, which were to be harbingers of a new socialist lifestyle.” After working the land for 10 years, the veterans had the option to leave the co-op, keeping title to their half section of land. The local co-op disbanded at the end of the 10 year period with the members choosing to farm on their own. Continued on page 15
