Yields were up, quality down for 2016 crops

This past harvest held some harsh challenges for farmers as they fought the weather to get their crops off.

Despite the rain showers and the snow that came in early October, Acting Cropping Management Specialist Shannon Friesen with the Government of Saskatchewan says the yields were above average for the majority of crops.

According to the final crop report from Nov. 15-21, “yields for hard red spring wheat are reported as 45 bushels per acre, durum 48 bushels per acre, oats 92 bushels per acre, barley 69 bushels per acre, canola 40 bushels per acre, peas 42 bushels per acre and lentils 1,098 lb. per acre.”

This was the second largest harvest for the province, with the first being from 2013, says Friesen.

“It was just the quality factor that was really below

our hopes.”

Sprouting, bleaching, and staining were a problem when it came to quality of the crops, as well as Fusarium Head Blight in particular cereal crops, especially durham and spring wheat.

Friesen says these issues have caused crop quality to fall below average for Saskatchewan crops which leads to a drop in prices.

The price gaps from number 1 to say number 2 and 3 grain will play a role in what producers do get from their grains, however Friesen says there is still a lot of crop to sell and a lot of factors to look at.

“It’s just a matter of whether you can hold onto it and wait for a better price,” says Friesen.

If elevators drop their standards in order to take in some of the lower quality grain, that will also play a role in the price that producers will be getting for their grain.

Overall, Friesen says she hopes that producers will

still be able to get a good price.

Areas hardest hit include both the Northeast and West Central areas of the province. Wet weather is no surprise to Northeastern producers but they are dealing with tougher conditions than usual.

West Central tend to be the first ones in the fields both when seeding and combining but the rainfall has caused problems that have been keeping them out of the fields.

Unfortunately many producers had to leave their crop in the field, some until spring. Province wide 1.51.6 million acres were left unharvested, says Friesen.

With concerns about possible spring flooding, Friesen says they are hoping for less snowfall over the winter to ensure farmers get into the fields quickly come spring.

“Hopefully things are okay for us in the spring and we can get back out and combine and of course start seeding again.”

2016 - Year in Review - January Naicam Vikings host Christmas themed mock wedding Santa and Mrs. Claus got married again. The Naicam Vikings Senior Hockey Team held a mock wedding at the Quill Lake Hall on Dec. 26.

The wedding featured a cast of unique characters including Santa and Mrs. Claus getting married, their wedding party, which included elves as the bridesmaids and an elf, Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer, the Gingerbread Man and Frosty the Snowman as the groomsmen.

On top of the unique characters in the wedding and the party there was also a Christmas Tree as the officiant, a bear as the ring-”bear”er and Jesus giving Mrs. Claus away.

The ceremony was certainly not your typical wedding, which included witty vows and funny remarks from the tree, all of which was aimed for a young to mid-adult audience.

Naicam Vikings President and Head Coach Chris Beadury said the Vikings were able to raise approximately $4,000 for their hockey club.

The team uses the funds raised from the event for hockey operations, which includes paying for ice time, paying the referees, and travel expenses for games and tournaments, among others.

Depending on the year and the length of their season, the team requires

between $30,000 and $50,000 to operate, quite an expensive bill for a small town team.

Among the 414 registered were people from all over the province of Saskatchewan as well as Alberta. Bauer said one particular family came from Calgary.

There were 37 fish caught over the course of the four hour derby, including 23 walleye, 14 northern pike.

Celine Favreau brings MSMA to Chamber Luncheon Humboldt businesses got to see the power of partnership at the Humboldt and District Chamber of Commerce Luncheon on Jan. 21.

Celine Favreau of the Mid-Sask Municipal Alliance (MSMA) was the guest speaker to talk about MSMA’s most recent projects.

The MSMA has partnered four local rural municipalities, seven towns and villages, one resort village, and the City of Humboldt to work collectively on local issues since 2013.

The communities have worked together to create official community plans, asset management, aligned their zoning bylaws, and are working on completing GIS mapping of their areas.

Favreau mostly spoke of their most recent project, Entrepreneurial Development Strategy, a support system they are building to help further economic growth in the region.

In partnership with the Saskatchewan Economic Development Association and the Aboriginal Business Service Network of Southern Saskatchewan, MSMA is working to fill the gaps between entrepreneurial initiatives and current business and available support systems.

Sask Cup cross-country skiing comes to Humboldt Skiers were carving up the trails at Carlton Trail Ski Club Jan. 24, as the club hosted the Sask Cup #3 crosscountry skiing race.

The race brought out 65 competitors in 23 different events and skiers ranged in age from 4- 64 years old.

Among the competitors racing in the sit ski competition was Colette Bourgonje.

Bourgonje is a ten-time Paralympian who has three Paralympic silver medals and seven Paralympic bronze medals.

Bourgonje competed in seven Paralympics as a Para-Nordic skier and three Paralympics in Para-Athletics.

Local farms recognized for century anniversary

Two area families were recognized for their long presence in the farming community.

The Neish family from Naicam and the Farber family from Fosston received Century Family Farm Awards from Information Services Corporation. They’re among the nearly 4,000 families who have been recognized since the program started in 2007.

Mikush becomes youngest ever in Curl Sask event A Wadena curler made Sask Curl history thanks to a rule change by Curling Canada.

Sixteen-year-old Dustin Mikush curled second on Team Comfort at the recent 2016 Men’s Provincial Qualifier – North and as a result became the youngest competitor ever to compete in a men’s, women’s or mixed Curl Sask event.

Mikush was granted entry into the event after Curling Canada changed the age eligibility rules in June of 2015.

The old rules stated that curlers under the age of 19 were not permitted to play in the adult events and could only curl in junior events.

Now any junior aged players are free to compete in the adult division if they choose. These rules were a long time coming for Curling Canada as they now

Music in Annaheim Home Routes came through Annaheim on Jan. 30 as Coco Love Alcorn visited the Backroads Bed & Breakfast.

The stop in Annaheim was part of Alcorn’s home routes tour, which sees her play 12 shows in 14 days across Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

Alcorn’s show was very unique and included a “fly by the seat of my pants” setlist where she made up the setlist as she went along.

The final performance of the evening was an improvised song where Alcorn asked an audience member to name a song, which was What A Wonderful World.

From there Alcorn took the lyrics and made her own version of that song using only the lyrics.

Hello Columbus! NHL’s Jackets are on fire

The Columbus Blue Jackets? Really?

When the National Hockey League took its three-day Christmas break, the Blue Jackets enjoyed turkey and all the trimmings, the trimmings including a nice red ribbon around the NHL’s best record.

Coach John Tortorella’s Blue Jackets had only five losses at the Christmas break, three fewer than next-best, Pittsburgh and Washington.

Columbus faced a stern test in the final week before the Christmas break, coming off a successful Western swing and then having three home games in four days — the final two on back-toback nights against Eastern powers Pittsburgh and Montreal. The result?

A 7-1 shellacking of Sidney Crosby’s Pens, and a 2-1 win over Montreal, the team’s 12th straight win.

A surprise? Yes, absolutely. The upstart Blue Jackets, who have made

the NHL playoffs only twice in their 16-year history, finished last season with the fourth worst record in the league. Teams simply don’t go from almost worst to among the best in one season, do they?

So what’s changed? The intense Tortorella is in his first full season behind the bench. The play of rookie defenceman Zack Werenski, 19, has been sublime. He’s the highestscoring rookie defenceman in the league and has the best plus-minus mark among first-year blueliners. The Jackets have no quit. This is the team that had a player, Matt Calvert, take a puck off his forehead, get 36 stitches, and return to the game to score the game-winner. Shorthanded, no less.

Goalie Sergei Bobrovsky (GAA under 1.90, with a .935 save percentage) will be in the all-star game. Journeyman Sam Gagner has finally found a home, among the team leaders in goals. Cam Atkinson and Alex Wennberg are emerging as two of the NHL’s best forwards. Brandon Saad and Nick Foligno are solid and dependable vets. And the Columbus defence, led by ex-Western Hockey Leaguers Ryan Murray and Seth Jones, is among the best units in the league.

Tortorella has his team playing at a high-octane pace, moving the puck quickly and tenaciously forechecking opponents into mistakes. They’re a fun team to watch and the resulting success is fun for the players, and fans.

It has been quite a run lately for Ohio sports teams. The Cleveland Cavaliers won the NBA title in June.

The Cleveland Indians came within a whisker of winning the World Series. The Ohio State Buckeyes are two wins away from the college football national championship. And now the Blue Jackets are carrying the Ohio torch on the ice.

Thirty-two games does not make a season but as far as half-seasons go, fans in Columbus are anything but blue about their red-hot Jackets.

Employment gaps being felt in ag sector

Calvin Daniels Moving forward the agriculture sector will continue to face one major issue, and that is finding quality employees.

Overall, the sector, especially at the primary production level, is becoming less important in terms of overall national economy. That tends to limit young people looking in that direction for careers.

And on the farm producers require workers with training. The common tractor or combine is an electronic mar-

vel these days with a myriad of computer controlled elements, and high tech gauges.

That means an operator with a set of skills that far exceed what the same position required even a decade ago.

It is not a case of a lack of jobs, so much as employees fitting specific needs.

At one level are high tech jobs, and the other labourers, and both have challenges to fill.

A recent release from the Canadian Agricultural Human Resource Council (CAHRC) touched on the labourer situation. The release suggested the impact of labour shortages on the beef and pork industries have become increasingly critical in recent years.

“New research indicates that the trend will worsen between now and 2025, resulting in

a widening labour gap that threatens to limit the profitability and growth of Canada’s redmeat industry,” it noted.

The CAHRC has completed a three-year study of the Canadian red-meat industry and released Labour Market Forecast to 2025 studies for the beef and pork industries – an examination of the workplace trends and realities that will shape these industries between now and 2025. The red-meat industry includes finished cattle and swine, as well as feedlots.

The study is part of the Labour Market Information (LMI) initiative, which examined the labour market in Canada’s agriculture sector across 11 commodity areas.

“The study revealed that in 2014, the beef industry workforce consists of 40,900 peo-

ple and was unable to fill 3,500 jobs due to a lack of domestic workers. The pork industry, which employed 14,000 people that year, was unable to fill 800 jobs.

By 2025, these industries are expected to see the labour gap widen significantly, with as many as 15,500 more jobs than the domestic workforce can fill,” notes the release.

The federal government has reacted at least in part to the situation, having recently announced changes to the four-year cumulative duration rule which will no longer apply to temporary foreign workers in Canada, effective immediately and an exemption is also being made on the cap for seasonal industries seeking temporary foreign workers for up to 180 days during the 2017 calendar year will be ex-

“The changes the federal government announced ... is good news for agricultural employers and farm and food workers,” explains Portia MacDonald-Dewhirst, Executive Director of Canadian Agricultural Human Resource Council (CAHRC) in a second release. “The feedback we received from agricultural stakeholders is very supportive of these changes.”

“Our recently released national Labour Market Information (LMI) research was conducted over a threeyear period with extensive collaboration with industry where we spoke to over 1,000 agricultural employers and employees,” says

MacDonald-Dewhirst.

“The feedback we received shows there is a critical gap between the demand for workers and the supply of available workers. This gap has doubled in the last 10 years to approximately 60,000 workers.

By 2025, the labour gap is expected to grow to 114,000 workers. The LMI research also revealed that primary agriculture has the highest industry job vacancy rate at seven per cent.

This is resulting in $1.5 billion in lost sales.”

Those numbers are certainly worrying as we move forward.

Drinking and driving is avoidable

It is a scary statistic.

It is also one that is avoidable.

Statistics Canada recently reported that there were “72,039 impaired driving incidents in 2015, a rate of 201 incidents per 100,000 population.”

This is the national average.

The worst part of this is that Saskatchewan is more than twice that national average at 575 incidents per 100,000 population.

We are in a category all our own here since the next highest province, Alberta, is almost half our number; 314 incidents per 100,000 population.

It is great to see initatives that address this, especially ones like the recent HCI SADD Red Ribbon Campaign. Unfortunately, they are not working.

People are not getting the message about drinking and driving.

Our rate of drinking and driving charges has dropped very little since 1986.

At 37 per cent, Saskatchewan is the province with the least amount of decrease.

Cst. Marc Thibodeau with the Humboldt RCMP sees many repeat offenders and it is disturbing that people do not get it, he says.

I remember speaking with the SADD group about putting on a distracted driving awareness campaign which included death statistics and “killing” students every few minutes as a way to represent those statistics.

Even the SADD group was discouraged about the way their fellow students practically ignored the message.

Even they knew they were not getting through to their fellow students.

What do we have to do to get people to understand the message.

I hear the excuses, too.

“I’m not a bad driver when I am drinking.”

“I won’t get caught.”

“It won’t happen to me.”

Guess what? It will not happen to you, until suddenly it does.

You will not get caught until suddenly you do.

You are not that good at driving, just like you are not that good at dancing when you have been drinking, you just think you are.

You do not become a statistic until suddenly you do.

We look with shame at people who have been the cause of an accident but how many of us can honestly say that they never have drank and drove?

Before we cast the first stone, we should look at our own experiences with drinking and driving.

We should also be the first ones to offer to be the designated driver, call a cab, or take away keys from people who were drinking.

The only way we are going to make these statistics any better is if we start being honest with ourselves.

Being told by the RCMP or by Statistics Canada obviously is not helping but maybe hearing from a friend about how they do not want you to drive will make you change your mind.

Loved ones make the holidays better

I hope everyone had a good holiday season.

I would ask what everyone got for Christmas but that is really not all that important.

What is important is how many family members and friends you had the opportunity to spend time with.

As I have mentioned before, the holiday season is a time for spending time with the people who matter most in your lives and in some cases we do not realize how important these people are until our time spent with them is either gone or at least limited.

A lot of times people are not able to spend that time, for a variety of different reasons, which may include, time,

money, or health and so when we do get those opportunities we need to make the most of it.

I can admit that although family and friends have always played a large part of my life I may also be guilty of not fully appreciating the time I did spend with them.

I moved to Humboldt last December so I made the decision to not go home for Christmas because I had just moved.

This year was different as I had the opportunity to go home and spend time with family and friends during a holiday for the first time since Thanksgiving in 2015, which gave me a whole new appreciation for how important that time is and although we did not do a whole lot I can say it was probably one of the best Christmas’ I have ever

had just because I got that time.

And although it was longer between seeing them during a holiday than I would have liked I also realize that a lot of people go much longer without seeing their loved ones than I did and that is why we need to appreciate it more.

The old adage says that absence makes the heart grow fonder and while that is true why does it need to be?

Why can we not be fond of those we love without having to be apart first?

Too often in life you hear people who say things like “I wish I had spent more time with them before they passed away” or “I wish I got to know them better.”

Why wait until you are left wishing?

Take the time whenever you can get it but especially around the holiday

season because you never know when you will not have that opportunity anymore.

So when some says “I hope you had a good holiday season” or “how was your holiday season,” do not think about how the dinner was or what kind of presents you got. Think about the time you got to spend with family and friends.

And if you think you had a bad holiday season because you did not make or get the time to spend with your loved ones, make a conscious effort to have a different answer in the future.

So I hope you had a good holiday season.

And I hope you got to spend as much time as possible with loved ones.

That is the most important part.

Dancing the weekend away at Lanigan competition Lanigan Dance Dynamics hosted their 24th annual dance competition Mar. 18-20.

Dance competition co-coordinator, Cindy Riemer, was very pleased with how the event turned out, saying the weekend was “excellent” and “wonderful.”

The competition saw 14 clubs compete from all over the region including Annaheim, Bruno, Davidson, Humboldt Kelvington, Lake Lenore, Lanigan, Rose Valley, Spalding, St. Brieux, Allan, Clavet, Saskatoon and Wynyard, which included 450 dancers.

Dancers competed in a number of different events including tap, jazz, lyrical ballet, modern, contemporary, hip hop, musical theatre, song and dance, and production.

They competed against one another, with over $11,000 in prize money and scholarships up for grabs.

Happy New Year everyone. We didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t do very much travelling this holiday season, but we did see some awesome Christmas light displays in Young and Colonsay. I am sure

every town had a beautiful display, we just never got there to see them.

Hope the holidays were safe and happy.

On Dec. 20, Viscount Central School held their Christmas Dinner. With special visitors including Santa. A very delicious Christmas

dinner was enjoyed by all in attendance.

The Wheatland Library in Viscount had their Christmas Card Greeting outside of the Library, that was awesomely displayed.

2016 - Year in Review - March Continued from page 7 St. Brieux Drama Club treats crowd to Daddyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Girl The St. Brieux Drama Club hosted their annual drama presentation on Mar. 11 with this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s play titled Daddyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Girl.

The play was about a grouchy chef who owned a small time diner in Saskatoon. The chef had his own rules and was very strict about the way it was operated even berating his employees. On the wall of his restaurant was a picture of his deceased wife and he was the only one who could speak to her.

Not long after the play started an angel by the name of Michael appeared and informed the diner owner that it was the 25th birthday of his daughter, who he had put up for adoption after his wife died because he felt he could not sufficiently raise her on his own.

The angel then informed the picture of the owners wife and the owner that he would meet his daughter on her birthday.

Over the course of the play a pair of 25-year-old women visited the diner and fit the age criteria, they were adopted from the same adoption agency he left his daughter at and they had the right name. Now, it was his job to figure out which one was his daughter.

As the play went along the diner owner discovered that neither of the women was his daughter and in fact his daughter was a waitress he has hired five weeks prior and had been especially hard on and berated quite frequently.

Great Plains entertain local communities The Great Plains played a pair of local shows last week. Their first show Mar. 17 at St. Andrews United Church in Kinistino and their second was at the Kelvington United Church on Mar. 18.

Both concerts were fundraising efforts, with the United Church in Kinistino looking to raise money for their mission work throughout the year. The show in Kelvington was a fundraiser for the United Church so they could continue the upkeep on the building.

The show was very well received in both locations with the Great Plains playing a variety of different songs and doing a variety of different things including playing songs from their latest CD, telling stories, talking about band member Darrel Delarondeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Metis heritage; Darrel sang a song about his grandfather riding with Louis Riel,

they sang a song about prairie towns, they did some Swiss Yodeling and they sang ballads.

Wheatland Band visits Watson The Watson Branch of the Quill Plains Arts Council hosted the Wheatland band for a concert at the Watson Civic Centre on Mar. 15.

The show was part of the tour organized by the Organization Of Saskatchewan Arts Councils.

Quill Plains Watson Branch Chair Marion Green was very pleased with how to concert went with just over 120 people in attendance.

Wheatland Band guitarist, Royal Sproule, says the band had a good time in Watson and said it was â&#x20AC;&#x153;a heck of a lot of fun.â&#x20AC;?

When the band first got to town, he says they were informed that the citizens were dealing with the death of a few Watson residents and that the town was in need of a good time.

The band also had some fun with the Watson crowd adding a new element to their show that they had not done at any show before.

Since they were touring with Keith Hamm, who was an old friend from their hometown in Alberta, they decided to try having Hamm, who is very skilled on a plethora of instruments including viola, violin, guitar, and mandolin, play three different instruments during one song.

The idea was to have Hamm picked up and play a mandolin, a guitar and finish off with a violin. Hamm even decided to take it one step further, says Sproule.

Zerbe brings his comedic variety show to Watrous The Watrous Arts Council presented Alex Zerbe at the Watrous Civic Centre on Mar. 18.

Zerbe, who is originally from the Seattle/Portland area, was touring through Saskatchewan as part of

the Organization Of Saskatchewan Arts Councils tour.

The show was very well attended with Watrous Visual Arts Co-ordinator Joanne Schroeder estimating there were approximately 153 in attendance.

Schroeder said they were pleased with the turnout they received.

Zerbe played a show at the school in Watrous during the day on the 18th, which Schroeder said brought in a bigger crowd to his show.

Zerbe describes his show as a comedy, variety show that contains a number of elements including juggling, funny rap songs, beat boxing, some dancing, sight gags, audience interaction, as well as a glow in the dark gag.

Fish slept in at Middle Lake Derby The weather was perfect and at the sound of the whistle, everyone was fishing at the Middle Lake Fishing Derby on Mar. 19.

Except the fish missed out on the party with around 82 fishermen and women came out to support the Lucien Lake Regional Park.

Unfortunately, there were no fish biting for the first time in many years, says Irene Gieserecht, secretary/treasurer of the Lucien Lake Regional Park Authorities.

All proceeds from the derby will go a upgrading the miniature golf course, says Lucien Lake Regional Park Authorities chairperson, Don Schlitz.

There were also lots of other prizes for raffles, door prizes, and a loonie shoot in the evening.

Other projects that the regional park group wants to work on for the park is a new chain link fence for a new wood pile and a new fishing dock to replace the 25-year-old one that is currently on the lake.

Obituaries JENKINS: Hugh July 25, 1948 - Dec 19, 2016 Our Dad, Hugh Jenkins was born in Wadena, Sask on July 25, 1948 to Jack and Eileen Jenkins of Quill Lake. Dad grew up on the family farm where he spent many hours on the tractor, perfect practice for driving the big gravel trucks with his brother Richard later on in life.

As kids, Dad and his sister Mary loved singing together, harmonizing to The Everly Brothers and sparking a love for music. Dad attended Wooler Elementary, a one-room country school, until seventh grade and graduated from Quill Lake High in 1966. After graduating, Dad took accounting classes, eventually becoming the Manager of Taxation and License at the City of Regina for 17 years. Working for the city was more than a great job; thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s where he met the love of his life, our Mom Carol, at the office cafeteria - if it wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t Mom bringing him back every day, it was the liver and onions. Soon after getting married in 1981, Mom and Dad started a family when their first son, Evan Hugh, was born in 1982. Becoming parents led them on a journey to faith in Jesus Christ, which had a huge and lasting impact on the rest of their life and the lives of their children and grandchildren. Timothy John was born in 1984, bringing newfound fun and intense curiosity into the home, and the family was completed with the birth of Nathan Thomas in 1988, bringing music back into Dadâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s life. In 1994, the family moved to Humboldt where Momâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s culinary and Dadâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s business expertise were put to work opening an A&W. In Humboldt, Dad was actively involved in the community, and was especially passionate about serving the Humboldt Bible Church, making many lasting friendships. Dadâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s passion for motorcycles was rekindled in 1997 when Mom bought Dad a Yamaha Virago for Fatherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Day; this eventually led to Dad upgrading his bike to a Harley Ultraclassic, taking Mom on many cherished cross-country trips.

Even after he stopped biking, Dad was often seen sporting one of his many Harley T-Shirts he had collected from around the worldIn 2007, Mom and Dad retired together and enjoyed almost 10 years of travelling, camping, and most importantly, time spent with their boys and five precious grandchildren. Nothing lit up Dadâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s eyes like the sound of his five grandkids coming through the door as well as snuggling with them first thing in the morning. Dad is survived by his wife Carol, and by his sons Evan (Shelby) and children Brianna, Bronwyn, and Jack; Tim (Shauna) and children Emilia and Olivia; and Nathan; as well as his sister Mary (Gordon) Widger, and brother Richard (Natalie) Jenkins, as well as six nieces and nephews. A Funeral Service was held on Friday, December 23, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. at the Humboldt Bible Church, Humboldt SK officiated by Pastor Sean Brandow. Others taking part were: Howard Rensberry, Duane Fehr, Ed Fischer and Brad Schroeder, scripture readers; Rosemary Fehr and Shauna Jenkins, pianists; Christine Ruten, Shelby Jenkins and Nathan Jenkins, musical tribute; Gordon Widger and Craig Rodenbush, ushers; Bob and Odney Codling, memorial table attendants. A eulogy was delivered by Evan, Tim and Nathan Jenkins. Interment will take place at a later date. In Memoriam FERGUSON: Cameron Peter Lloyd

Oct 5, 1949 - Dec 20, 2016 Cameron Peter Lloyd Ferguson of Spalding, SK, passed away on December 20, 2016 after a brief battle with cancer. He was 67 years old. Cam, the eldest of five children, was born to Lloyd and Gladys (nee Seckinger) Ferguson on October 5, 1949 in Nipawin, SK. He began working for the Co-op as a teenager.

This job took him to many communities before he finally settled in Spalding, SK, and worked as the manager of the grocery store. In 1980, he moved his family to the farm after buying his first hive of bees.

He was a successful beekeeper for over 30 years, and always strove to break his own records for the amount of honey produced per hive. After retiring from beekeeping, he continued to grain farm alongside his son, Chad. In the last year, he proudly helped Chad and Wendy pursue full-time farming. As a true testament to his character and love of farming, he drove the combine until 4:30 a.m. one morning in November, days before being diagnosed with cancer. Cam was a lifelong learner and enjoyed pursuing new interests. While working on the farm, he kept cattle, pigs, chickens, and a milking cow at various times in his life. His favourite time of year was spring, as it represented new growth and a new start. He enjoyed bird watching, just as his dad had, and was known to remark when the first robin of the spring appeared in the yard. Cam particularly liked meeting new people. He took up golfing as a hobby in the last few years and enjoyed winter holidays to Arizona with his special friend, Judy. He was an active member of his community and was involved in many organizations, including the Saskatchewan Beekeepers Association, Prairie North Co-op, Crossroads Bible Church and the Canadian Food Grains Bank. Cam was predeceased by his father, Lloyd Ferguson. He is survived by his three children: Angela (Murray) Poole, Chad (Wendy) Ferguson, and Kimberly Ferguson (Jon); and four grandchildren: Jayden, Julia, Damon, and Emily. He leaves to mourn his mother, Gladys Ferguson; siblings: Bonnie (Glen) Romaniuk, Shelly (Bob) Ford, Tim (Dianne) Ferguson, and Todd (Norrie) Ferguson; and many nieces and nephews. He will be lovingly remembered by Judy Regie and her children, grandchildren, and siblings. The Funeral Service was held at Crossroads Bible Church in Spalding, on Friday, December 23, 2016, at 10:00 a.m., officiated by Pastor Brian Unger. In lieu of flowers or donations, the family requests that you encourage and help someone you know to stop smoking, in memory of Cam. The family would like to thank Dr. Wingate and the staff at Melfort Union Hospital for their care in the last weeks, and to all those who visited and sent well wishes. By Christopher Lee Journal Reporter The City of Humboldt has just reopened another fun winter activity as the outdoor skating rink, which is located behind St. Dominic School has been open to the public since Dec. 19.

The rink was opened approximately a week later than last year, which was caused by an unseasonably warm November, which resulted in temperatures well above zero and no snow, says Facility Maintenance Manager Lawrence Dunne.

“You always like to have snow on the bottom for base otherwise you potentially see all the grass and dirt and whatever else.”

Once the calendar flipped to December it took very little time for the rink to come together, says Dunne, who notes that Norbert LeBlanc began flooding the ice on Dec. 12.

“It was cold out so he went out and just laid the water to it.”

While the cold was great for helping get the rink operational it also caused some problems once first opened, noted Dunne, who said they noticed various parts of the ice starting to chip out, requiring some patch work.

After a couple of days of patchwork Dunne says they were able to fill in and fix most of the holes, with the ice now in good shape.

For those who are looking for some winter fun, the ice is maintained daily.

Dunne says they take a tractor out to the ice to plow any snow that may have accumulated on the rink due to snow fall, before pulling an ice resurfacer behind the tractor to flood the ice.

The ice is open all day for anyone to use and is lit at night for late night use, which the lights remaining on until between 12:00 and 1:00 a.m., says Dunne.

With the rink being a community responsibility Dunne encourages anyone who sees any damage to either the ice or the boards to call leisure services at 306-682-2597 to report the issues.
